- 0:00Welcome, very welcome. Today we are
- 0:04going to talk about the first pillar of
- 0:06the routine I proposed to you, right? I
- 0:09proposed it in a basic way because at
- 0:11the end of this preparation, we will
- 0:13talk about routine again, okay? What I
- 0:16consider the most important of all,
- 0:18this pillar is the life of prayer.
- 0:22Before anything else, I want to tell
- 0:24you something very directly. If you
- 0:27don't have a consistent prayer life,
- 0:29everything else we try to build in
- 0:31these nine days will be very difficult
- 0:34to sustain. Prayer is not just an item
- 0:37on a list; it is the foundation, it is
- 0:39the base, it is what gives meaning to
- 0:40everything that comes after. So let's
- 0:42get started, shall we? First, the first
- 0:45step is for you to have a physical
- 0:47space reserved for your prayer. It
- 0:49doesn't need to be a large space, it
- 0:50doesn't need to be luxurious or
- 0:52elaborate, but it must exist. So, if it
- 0:55doesn't exist, this little corner of
- 0:56your house, which could be a small
- 0:58table, a shelf, a corner of the room,
- 0:59then provide it, okay? Put the basics
- 1:02there: a Bible, a rosary, a candle,
- 1:04maybe an image, and that's it. That is
- 1:07the minimum. But if you want to go a
- 1:09little further, add incense. And I
- 1:11strongly recommend the incense from
- 1:13Milagros, which is the Brazilian
- 1:15company that supplies the Vatican and
- 1:16several monasteries and churches here
- 1:18in Brazil as well. It's the only one I
- 1:21use here in my home, okay? You can find
- 1:23it on their website and in various
- 1:25Catholic spaces. This is not an
- 1:26advertisement, it's just a
- 1:27recommendation, right? So you don't say
- 1:29, or send me a message asking. "But
- 1:31which incense?" Anyway, I'm already
- 1:33telling you which incense. So, if
- 1:35you've never used incense and don't
- 1:37know which scent you prefer, buy a
- 1:39smaller size, okay? That works well,
- 1:42right? They have some small ones, okay?
- 1:45If you have images of your devotion,
- 1:47put them there. And I suggest that you
- 1:49have at least a crucifix and an image
- 1:51of Our Lady, okay? We are in the period
- 1:55of the St. Michael Lent. So you can
- 1:57also place an image of St. Michael if
- 1:59you have one. If you don't have any
- 2:00images, you can print them out. You can
- 2:02print an image of St. Michael. It works
- 2:04well, it's all fine. I've done it that
- 2:05way before. You can also leave a book
- 2:07there for your daily spiritual reading.
- 2:09And I usually leave The Imitation of
- 2:11Christ, okay? Because the pages are
- 2:14short, perfect for your morning prayer
- 2:16time, for you to reflect on that
- 2:18teaching throughout the day, okay?
- 2:20During these days, you can print and
- 2:22keep your challenge planner handy, okay
- 2:24? And everything will then be organized
- 2:27for you to follow along. Now let's get
- 2:30to the routine itself. Woke up? Go to
- 2:32your prayer space, sit down, light your
- 2:34candle, the incense, and begin. My
- 2:37suggestion is this sequence. Pray the
- 2:40full rosary, then offer a prayer from
- 2:42your own heart, speak to God in your
- 2:45own words the way you speak to someone
- 2:47you love, you know? Treat God as God
- 2:52the Father, right? As a father, and you
- 2:55place yourself as his child. OK? So, if
- 2:59you don't know how to do this, I
- 3:00recommend the videos by Dr. Filó,
- 3:02right? To me, she is a master at this
- 3:04and I won't be teaching you how to do
- 3:06it. It is better for you to look for
- 3:08Dr. Filó herself, OK? During this time
- 3:11, also add the prayer to Saint Michael,
- 3:13the exorcism that Pope Leo wrote, which
- 3:15is very powerful, okay? I also add the
- 3:18prayer to Saint Benedict because he is
- 3:21a saint of my devotion, OK? Sometimes,
- 3:24depending on the time of year, I add
- 3:26other prayers. Then you will do a brief
- 3:28reading of the Bible. And here I
- 3:31suggest you do your lectio divina,
- 3:32which is a way of reading the Bible,
- 3:34right? You read, pause, reflect, let
- 3:38the word work within you, respond with
- 3:40prayer, and there are questions in the
- 3:43planner to help you do this lectio
- 3:44divina, okay? And then a brief reading
- 3:48of whatever book you like. In my case,
- 3:50it's The Imitation of Christ, or the
- 3:52spiritual book you chose. Finished
- 3:55studying? Without putting out the
- 3:57candle and without rushing, you will
- 3:58have a moment of meditation and
- 4:00visualization. The meditation is simple
- 4:02. You surrender into the Father's arms
- 4:03and stay there for a while. Surrender
- 4:05your prayer, that moment in silence.
- 4:08Surrender yourself to God, do you
- 4:09understand? To his presence. The
- 4:11visualization comes right after. And I
- 4:13know this word sometimes causes
- 4:14discomfort in the context of the
- 4:16Catholic faith, especially, but I need
- 4:17to say that it has nothing to do with
- 4:19esotericism. Father Christian Chancar,
- 4:22for example, he speaks about this with
- 4:24clarity in his videos and he brings up
- 4:27the issue of neuroscience, that
- 4:28visualization is a real tool for mental
- 4:31and spiritual transformation. How does
- 4:33this work? You will close your eyes and
- 4:35you have to imagine it as if you were
- 4:37living in a movie, in such a way that
- 4:39you are feeling it, you have emotion,
- 4:41understand? If you asked for healing
- 4:43for yourself or someone else, you will
- 4:44visualize that scene of you being
- 4:46healed, or the person being healed or
- 4:47receiving the news of the cure; if you
- 4:49asked for liberation from something,
- 4:50you will see yourself already free. It
- 4:52is not about seeing yourself asking or
- 4:54in the process, no. You have to see the
- 4:56final stage, when that has already
- 4:58happened, see yourself giving thanks,
- 4:59for example, do you understand? This is
- 5:01not doubting God, okay? This is a way,
- 5:05let's say, of helping. It is even a
- 5:09form of prayer. This whole routine,
- 5:11right? takes about half an hour, okay?
- 5:14So, if you say: "Look, I don't have
- 5:16half an hour at all," couldn't you wake
- 5:20up 30 minutes earlier? But if it is
- 5:23really not possible, I don't know,
- 5:25given your life, right? Do the minimum:
- 5:27pray one decade of the rosary, do a
- 5:30very brief biblical reading, keep the
- 5:32moment of meditation and visualization,
- 5:35and reduce it to 15 minutes, okay? But
- 5:38do not give up this time with God in
- 5:40your first moment, because that is
- 5:42putting God first, right? Uh, one of
- 5:45the ways, okay? Now, besides this
- 5:49morning moment, I propose something
- 5:51that has a lot to do with Saint
- 5:53Benedict, okay? Prayer throughout the
- 5:55day, at several moments. The idea is
- 5:57simple. You pray the rosary, my idea is
- 6:00simple, okay? You pray the rosary in
- 6:03parts throughout the day, as if they
- 6:06were stages. So, one decade in the
- 6:09morning, maybe one at 9 AM, another
- 6:12with the Angelus at noon, another at 3
- 6:15PM at the Hour of Mercy, another at 6
- 6:17PM again with the Angelus, up to 9 PM,
- 6:20right? And in this way, you will pray
- 6:23the full rosary throughout the day, uh,
- 6:25and will be strengthening yourself. It
- 6:28is a moment where you stop everything
- 6:30you are doing in your life and
- 6:31reconnect with God. It is something I
- 6:33really like to do and that I did a lot
- 6:35when I had a regular job. right? I
- 6:37would stop everything, wake up, do the
- 6:40decade, arrive at work, start at 9, do
- 6:43another decade. Noon, lunch time, a
- 6:46decade, 3 PM, another decade. And like
- 6:48this, a super simple thing, you can go
- 6:50to the restroom, it takes 5 minutes,
- 6:52it's settled, okay? You will take there
- 6:54, ah, the mystery of the day and for
- 6:56each decade you will meditate on one of
- 6:58those mysteries. If you follow the
- 7:00Liturgy of the Hours schedule, you will
- 7:02have time to spare. And then you just
- 7:04repeat it, okay? You can recite the
- 7:07creed only the first time, or if you
- 7:08prefer, right? It's up to your devotion
- 7:11. You can recite the creed every time.
- 7:14I do it every time. You can also add a
- 7:16prayer of your own devotion. And in
- 7:20this case, the St. Michael Lent, I
- 7:22strongly advise that you add the St.
- 7:24Michael prayer, okay? Now, if you
- 7:29already pray the Liturgy of the Hours,
- 7:30no need, it's fine, keep the Liturgy of
- 7:32the Hours. If you are already more
- 7:36advanced in your spiritual life and
- 7:38have more time, you can pray the rosary
- 7:40beads during the time of the Liturgy of
- 7:43the Hours to complete a full rosary
- 7:45during the day, okay? Demanding. It can
- 7:50even be a penance you choose to do for
- 7:53this St. Michael Lent, okay? And if you
- 7:57are watching this challenge outside of
- 7:59St. Michael's Lent, no problem. It can
- 8:02be a penance for another reason, during
- 8:04the normal Lent, or just because you
- 8:05want to do it, right? As a resolution.
- 8:09Okay? And how do you end the day, okay?
- 8:13With an examination of conscience. It
- 8:16is a practice that Saint Ignatius of
- 8:18Loyola developed very well, which is
- 8:19one of the most powerful tools for
- 8:21spiritual and individual growth that
- 8:23exist. You sit down, look at the day
- 8:26that passed, meditate on it, and ask
- 8:28yourself: "Where did I draw closer to
- 8:30God today? Where did I drift away? What
- 8:33did I do well? What could I have done
- 8:35better?" With great honesty. It is a
- 8:37spiritual review of your day. In the
- 8:39challenge planner, you will find a
- 8:40space for that there. And you can also
- 8:43do it, not as a replacement, but also
- 8:45based on the 10 Commandments, right?
- 8:48And this will already help you a lot
- 8:50for your confession. See? If you do
- 8:54this every day, it will help
- 8:56tremendously with confession, because
- 8:58you will be able to see small sins,
- 9:00small errors, things that, sometimes,
- 9:02in the span of over a month, you
- 9:04wouldn't even remember happened: that
- 9:06you got irritated, cursed someone,
- 9:08thought evil, or, well, you know? So
- 9:11here is a tip for the rest of your life
- 9:14, okay? And finally, this is important,
- 9:16okay? During these nine days, I want
- 9:20you to do everything, absolutely
- 9:22everything you do, as an offering to
- 9:24God. It is also the spirit of Saint
- 9:26Benedict, right? Ora et labora, pray
- 9:28and work, in that order and with that
- 9:30intention. When you wash the dishes,
- 9:32for example, wash them as an offering.
- 9:35When you tidy up the house, do it as an
- 9:37offering to God, as a prayer. Okay? Got
- 9:40it? You understand, right? Because
- 9:43nothing we have is truly ours.
- 9:46Everything, everything we have here was
- 9:49given to us by God. The materials, the
- 9:53intelligence to make the plate, the
- 9:55soap, everything else, your ability to
- 9:57wash the dishes, it was all given by
- 9:59God. The food that dirtied that plate,
- 10:03your family—these are people God gave
- 10:05you to look after. So, when you start
- 10:08doing everything in your life this way,
- 10:11you start acting with excellence. Just
- 10:13imagine, Jesus is coming to your house
- 10:15and you are going to make lunch for him
- 10:17. What kind of reaction would you have
- 10:21in your heart? Even if it’s just rice
- 10:25and beans, wouldn't you make the best
- 10:26rice and beans you possibly could with
- 10:28excellence? Why don't you do that every
- 10:33day? With everything you do. And don't
- 10:36tell me it's tiring, because it's not,
- 10:38okay? It's just a matter of reminding
- 10:40yourself. So, if you need to remember
- 10:42this, get some sticky notes and put
- 10:44them around the house; it might not
- 10:45look pretty. But I've done it, and it
- 10:48works incredibly well when I need to
- 10:50remember something. Put them in key
- 10:53places: on the bathroom mirror, near
- 10:56the sink, on the fridge door—just
- 10:58stick them in strategic places so you
- 11:01always see to do everything with
- 11:03excellence, offering it as a gift to
- 11:06God. It will work wonders, okay? When
- 11:11you act with this awareness, your daily
- 11:14life turns into a prayer. Now, the last
- 11:18thing I want to tell you about a life
- 11:20of prayer. And at the beginning, you'll
- 11:24have to do it through sheer grit; there
- 11:26will be days you won't feel like it.
- 11:28There will be days when it's hard to
- 11:30wake up early, days you might fail,
- 11:32days your mind will wander, and days
- 11:33when it feels like it's not doing any
- 11:35good. Simply do it because you made a
- 11:39commitment to me, and honor that
- 11:40commitment. Keep your word, okay?
- 11:44Consistency doesn't depend on willpower
- 11:47. So, even if I don't feel like it, I
- 11:49will fulfill my commitment. Understood?
- 11:52This is exactly how Saint Thomas
- 11:53Aquinas taught about virtue. You don't
- 11:56wait to feel something to act; you just
- 11:58act. And the feeling, you know, comes
- 12:01with time. Motivation sometimes comes
- 12:02with time. Sometimes you have that
- 12:04burst of motivation, it goes away, and
- 12:05then shortly after it comes back, okay?
- 12:08Habit is built precisely through
- 12:10day-to-day faithfulness, on the
- 12:12difficult days, not the easy ones. So,
- 12:16I hope you understood. If you have any
- 12:19questions, write them below this video,
- 12:21okay? I want to encourage you to always
- 12:25comment below this video. If you are
- 12:28watching, or watched this lesson, and
- 12:30have a reflection, you can take a
- 12:32picture, write your reflection, post it
- 12:34on your stories, and tag me. I would
- 12:37love to see it, you know? I might even
- 12:39repost some of them and, who knows,
- 12:41maybe even comment on them, okay? So, I
- 12:44want to encourage you to do this so we
- 12:46can start generating this movement,
- 12:48alright? And give me your feedback on
- 12:51what you thought. Write below what you
- 12:52thought about it, okay? Did you already
- 12:55know this way of seeing, thinking, and
- 12:58developing a prayer life? Tell me in
- 13:01the comments. See you in the next video
- 13:03and you can binge-watch if you want,
- 13:06okay? Watch one video after another,
- 13:09but I advise you to watch with a
- 13:11notebook, write down what you need to
- 13:13do, rewatch all the videos as many
- 13:16times as you need to remember, watch
- 13:18the first time with full attention,
- 13:20with a notebook. Ah, the second time
- 13:24you can watch while exercising or going
- 13:26to work, okay? You can do that
- 13:29throughout all the videos, alright? So,
- 13:33until our next video.
