- 0:19All right, Mr. Rader.
- 0:21I need to find out more information.
- 0:24On that particular day, the 15th day of
- 0:26January, 1974,
- 0:29can you tell me where you went to kill
- 0:31Mr.
- 0:32Joseph Otero?
- 0:44Um I think it's 1834.
- 0:47Uh
- 0:49H small. All right. Can you tell me
- 0:51approximately what time of day you went
- 0:53there?
- 0:54Uh somewhere between
- 0:567:00 and 7:30.
- 0:59This particular location, did you know
- 1:01these people?
- 1:03Well, that's uh
- 1:08Well, that was part of my uh
- 1:10I guess my whatchamacallit fantasy.
- 1:12These people were selected.
- 1:15All right. So, you
- 1:18Okay.
- 1:19You were engaged in some kind of fantasy
- 1:22during this period of time. Uh yes, sir.
- 1:24All right. Now, when you use the term
- 1:27fantasy, is this something you were
- 1:28doing for your personal pleasure? Uh
- 1:30sexual fantasy, sir. I see.
- 1:33So, you went to this residence.
- 1:36And what occurred then?
- 1:38Well,
- 1:40um
- 1:42I had uh
- 1:44did some thinking on what I was going to
- 1:46do to uh either Mrs. Otero or Josephine.
- 1:51And basically broke into the house or
- 1:53didn't break into the house, but uh when
- 1:55they came out of the house, I came in
- 1:57and confronted the family, and then we
- 1:58went from there.
- 1:59All right. Had you planned this
- 2:01beforehand?
- 2:03To some degree, yes. Uh I'd forgotten
- 2:05the house that Well, I lost control of
- 2:07it, but it it was, you know, in
- 2:10back of my mind, I had some ideas what I
- 2:12was going to do, but uh I just I
- 2:15basically panicked that first day, so
- 2:17Beforehand, did you know who was there
- 2:19in the house?
- 2:21I thought Mrs. Otero and the two kids,
- 2:24the two younger kids were in the house.
- 2:26I didn't realize Mr. Otero was going to
- 2:27be there.
- 2:28All right. How did you get into the
- 2:30house, Mr. I came in the back door, uh
- 2:33cut the phone lines, uh waited at back
- 2:35door,
- 2:36had reservations about even going or
- 2:38just walking away, but pretty soon the
- 2:40door opened, and I was in.
- 2:42All right. So, the door opened. Was it
- 2:45opened for you or did somebody I think
- 2:46one of the kids I think the uh
- 2:49Ju- uh Junior or not Junior, yes, the uh
- 2:54the young girl, uh Josephine opened the
- 2:56door.
- 2:57He probably let the dog out cuz the dog
- 2:59was in the house that
- 3:00All right. When you went into the house,
- 3:02what happened then?
- 3:04Well, I like confronted the family, uh
- 3:06pulled a pistol,
- 3:07uh confronted Mr. Otero,
- 3:09and
- 3:10asked him to uh
- 3:12you know, that I was there to basically
- 3:14I was wanted.
- 3:17Uh
- 3:18wanted to uh get the car, I was hungry,
- 3:21food, I was wanted,
- 3:22and asked him to lie down in the living
- 3:25room.
- 3:26And
- 3:27at that time, I realized it wouldn't be
- 3:28a really good idea, so I finally the dog
- 3:30was a real problem, so I I asked Mr.
- 3:32Otero if he could get the dog out, so he
- 3:34had one of the kids put it out.
- 3:36And then I took them back to the
- 3:37bedroom.
- 3:39You took who back to the bedroom? Uh the
- 3:40family to the bedroom. The four members.
- 3:43All right. What happened then? Uh at
- 3:44that time, I tied them up.
- 3:47While still holding them at gunpoint?
- 3:49Well, in between tying and yes.
- 3:52Yeah.
- 3:53All right. After you tied them up, what
- 3:55occurred?
- 3:57Well, uh they started complaining about
- 3:59uh being tied up, and I re- re-loosened
- 4:02the bonds a couple of times, uh tried to
- 4:04make Mr. Otero as comfortable as I
- 4:05could.
- 4:06Uh apparently he had a cracked rib from
- 4:08a car accident, so I had him put a
- 4:11pillow down underneath for his head.
- 4:13Uh had he put a uh
- 4:15I think he Parker or
- 4:17coat underneath thing.
- 4:18Uh
- 4:20They uh
- 4:21you know, they talked to me about uh
- 4:24you know, giving the car and whatever
- 4:25money I guess they didn't have very much
- 4:26money.
- 4:28And uh
- 4:29the
- 4:30There I realized that uh
- 4:33you know, I was already
- 4:34I didn't have a mask on or anything.
- 4:36They already could ID me.
- 4:37And uh
- 4:39uh
- 4:40made a made a decision to go ahead and
- 4:43and
- 4:44put them down, I guess, or strangle
- 4:46them.
- 4:46All right. What did you do to Joseph
- 4:48Otero? Joseph Otero? Yeah, Joseph Otero
- 4:52Sr., Mr. Otero, the father.
- 4:55I put a plastic bag over his head and
- 4:57then some cords, and then tightened it.
- 5:01And this was in the bedroom? Yes, sir.
- 5:05Did he in fact uh suffocate and die as a
- 5:08result of this?
- 5:09Not right away. No, sir, he didn't. What
- 5:11happened?
- 5:12Uh
- 5:13well, after that, I I did Mrs. Otero.
- 5:17I had never strangled anyone before,
- 5:20so I really didn't know how much
- 5:21pressure you had to put on a person or
- 5:23how long it would take, but
- 5:25Was she also tied up during the period
- 5:27of time?
- 5:28Yes. Uh-huh. Yeah, both her hands and
- 5:29her feet were tied up. She was on the
- 5:30bed. Where were the children? Uh well,
- 5:34uh Josephine was on the bed, and uh
- 5:37Junior was on the floor this time. So,
- 5:40we're we're talking first of all about
- 5:42Joseph Otero. So, you had put the bag
- 5:44over his head and tied it. Mhm. And he
- 5:47did not die right away. Can you tell me
- 5:49what happened in regards to Joseph
- 5:51Uh he moved over real quick like, and I
- 5:52think tore a hole in the bag, and I
- 5:54could tell that he was having some
- 5:55problems there. But at that time, the
- 5:58the whole family just went uh they went
- 6:00panicked on me, so I
- 6:01I worked pretty quick.
- 6:04All right. What did you
- 6:05You worked pretty quick. What did you
- 6:07do?
- 6:08I uh strangled Mrs. Otero,
- 6:10and she went out
- 6:12or passed out. I thought she was dead.
- 6:13She passed out. And I strangled uh
- 6:16uh Josephine. She passed out or I
- 6:19thought she was dead.
- 6:20And uh
- 6:21then I went over and put a uh and then
- 6:24put a bag on uh
- 6:26uh
- 6:27Junior's head, and uh
- 6:31And then uh
- 6:32if I remember right, uh
- 6:34Mrs. Otero
- 6:37came back.
- 6:39Uh she came back, and uh Sir, let me ask
- 6:42you about Joseph Otero Sr. You indicated
- 6:45he had torn a hole in the bag. Mhm.
- 6:48What did you do with him then? I put
- 6:50another bag over it. Or either that or I
- 6:52I recollect I think I put a uh
- 6:55either a cloth
- 6:57or a t-shirt or something over it over
- 6:59his head, and then the bag another bag.
- 7:01Did he subsequently
- 7:03die?
- 7:04Well, yes.
- 7:06I mean, I I mean, I was I didn't just
- 7:08stay there and watch him. And I was
- 7:10moving around the room, but
- 7:12All right. So, you indicated you
- 7:13strangled Mrs. Otero
- 7:15after you had
- 7:17done this. Is that correct?
- 7:19Yeah, I went back and strangled her
- 7:20again.
- 7:21That and that that finally killed her at
- 7:24that time. So, this is in regards to
- 7:26count two. You had
- 7:27first of all put the bag over Joseph
- 7:29Otero's head, Mhm. and he tore a hole in
- 7:32the bag.
- 7:33Then you went ahead. Did you strangle
- 7:36Mrs. Otero then, or did you go back and
- 7:38first of all, Mr. Otero was strangled
- 7:41or bag put over his head and strangled.
- 7:43Then I thought he was going down,
- 7:46and I went over and strangled Mrs.
- 7:48Otero.
- 7:50I thought she was down.
- 7:51Then I strangled
- 7:53uh
- 7:54Josephine. I thought she was down. And
- 7:56then I went over to Junior and put the
- 7:58bag on his head.
- 8:02After that, Mrs. Otero woke back up, and
- 8:06you know, she was pretty upset with
- 8:07what's going on. So, I came back,
- 8:10and
- 8:11at that point in time, strangled her
- 8:14for a for a death strangle at that time.
- 8:16With your hands or what? No, with a
- 8:17cord. With a with a rope.
- 8:20And uh
- 8:21then I
- 8:22I think at that point in time, I redid
- 8:24Mr. Otero, put the bag over his head,
- 8:27uh went over and then took Junior
- 8:30Before that, she asked me to uh
- 8:33to to save her son. So, I actually had
- 8:36taken the bag off, and then I was really
- 8:38upset at that point in time. So,
- 8:40basically, when Mr. Otero was down, Mrs.
- 8:42Otero was down, I went ahead and and uh
- 8:45took uh Junior I put him in the bag over
- 8:47his head and took him to the other
- 8:48bedroom.
- 8:49What did you do then? Uh put a bag over
- 8:52his head, I put a cloth over his head, a
- 8:54t-shirt and a bag so he couldn't tear a
- 8:56hole in it.
- 8:57And
- 8:58he subsequently died from that.
- 9:01And then when I went back, Josephine had
- 9:04woke back up.
- 9:06What did you do then? I took her to the
- 9:07basement, and eventually hung her.
- 9:11All right. You hung her in the basement?
- 9:13Yes, sir.
- 9:14Did you do anything else at that time?
- 9:17Yes, I I had some sexual fantasies.
- 9:20But that was after she was hung.
- 9:24All right.
- 9:26What did you do then?
- 9:28I cleaned the house, kind of cleaned it
- 9:30up.
- 9:31It's called the right hand rule. You go
- 9:32from room to room.
- 9:34Uh
- 9:34picked their things up. I think I took
- 9:36Mr. Otero's watch.
- 9:38Or
- 9:39I guess I took a radio. I I'd forgotten
- 9:41about that, but apparently took a radio.
- 9:43Why did you take these things? I don't
- 9:45know.
- 9:46Um I have no idea.
- 9:49Just uh
- 9:51What happened then?
- 9:52Uh got the keys to the car. In fact, I
- 9:54had the keys I think earlier before that
- 9:56cuz I wanted to make sure I had a way of
- 9:57getting out of the house.
- 9:59And clean the house up a little bit,
- 10:01make sure everything's packed up and
- 10:03left through the front door.
- 10:07And went there, went over to their car
- 10:09and then drove over to uh
- 10:12Dillon's, left the car there.
- 10:14Then eventually walked back to my car.
- 10:17All right. Now sir, from what you have
- 10:20just said
- 10:23I take it that the
- 10:25facts you told me apply to both counts,
- 10:28one all of counts one, two, three and
- 10:31four. Is that correct?
- 10:32Yes, sir.
- 10:35Now Mr.
- 10:36Rader Yes,
- 10:40And that is originally I believe he
- 10:42indicated 1834 Edgemoor, the address was
- 10:45actually 803 Edgemoor. All right, but
- 10:47I'd ask you for the current central
- 10:49count as a matter of fact. He's a case
- 10:51of what had happened. I don't believe
- 10:52the exact address is important.
- 11:04All right, Mr. Rader, we will now turn
- 11:06to count five.
- 11:08In that count, it is claimed that on or
- 11:10about the 4th day of April, 1974
- 11:13in Sedgwick County, Kansas, that you
- 11:15unlawfully killed
- 11:17Kathryn Bright maliciously, willfully,
- 11:20deliberately and with premeditation by
- 11:22strangulation and stabbing. Inflict the
- 11:25injuries from which she did die on April
- 11:274th, 1974.
- 11:30Can you tell me what occurred on that
- 11:31day?
- 11:37Uh the uh
- 11:39I don't know how to exactly say that. I
- 11:41had many what I called them projects.
- 11:43They were different people in the town
- 11:45that I followed, watched. Uh Kathryn
- 11:47Bright was one of the next targets I
- 11:49guess as I would indicate. How did you
- 11:52select her? Uh just driving by one day
- 11:55and I saw her go in the house with
- 11:56somebody else and I thought that's a
- 11:57possibility. There was many many places
- 12:00in the area.
- 12:02College Hill, they've been they're all
- 12:03over Wichita. But anyway, that's it just
- 12:05was basically a selection process, work
- 12:07toward it. If it didn't work, I just
- 12:08move on to something else.
- 12:10But in the
- 12:11in the my kind of person as stalking and
- 12:14scrolling, you go through the trolling
- 12:16stage and then a stalking stage. She was
- 12:18in the stalking stage when this
- 12:19happened.
- 12:22All right, sir. So you identified
- 12:24Kathryn Bright as a potential victim.
- 12:26Yes, sir. What did you do here in
- 12:28Sedgwick County then? Pardon? What did
- 12:30you do then here in Sedgwick County?
- 12:32Uh on this particular day, uh
- 12:35I broke into the house and waited for
- 12:38her to come home.
- 12:39How did you break into the house?
- 12:40Uh through the back door on the east
- 12:42side.
- 12:44All right, and you waited for her to
- 12:45come home. Where did you wait? Uh in the
- 12:48house there, probably close to the
- 12:49bedroom. I walked through the house and
- 12:51uh kind of figured out where I'd be if
- 12:53they came through.
- 12:55All right. What happened then? Uh she
- 12:57and Kevin Bright came in. Uh wasn't
- 13:00expecting him to be there.
- 13:02Uh
- 13:02and come to find out I guess they were
- 13:04related. Uh that time I
- 13:07approached them and told them I was
- 13:09wanted in California.
- 13:11Uh needed some car. They Basically the
- 13:13same thing that I told the Oteros.
- 13:15Uh kind of ease them, make them feel
- 13:17better.
- 13:18And proceeded to I think I had him tie I
- 13:21think I had him tie her up first.
- 13:23And then I tied him up or vice versa, I
- 13:25don't remember right now. At that time
- 13:27Let me ask you indicated you had some uh
- 13:31items to tie these people with. Did you
- 13:33bring these items both the Oteros and to
- 13:35this location? The Oteros I did. Uh
- 13:38I'm not really sure on the Brights.
- 13:40Um
- 13:44There was some
- 13:45I When I am working with the police,
- 13:47there was some controversy on that.
- 13:49Probably more likely I did, but uh
- 13:53if if I had brought my stuff and used my
- 13:55stuff,
- 13:56uh Kevin would probably be dead today.
- 13:59All right. I'm not bragging on that.
- 14:00It's just a matter of fact. It's the
- 14:02bonds I tied broke tied him up with that
- 14:04he broke himself.
- 14:06And then uh
- 14:07All right, sir. And maybe same way with
- 14:09uh
- 14:10same with Kathryn. It was I got out of
- 14:12got out of hand.
- 14:14All right. Now you indicated you believe
- 14:16you had Kevin tie Kathryn up. Can you
- 14:18tell me what happened then? Okay. I
- 14:21moved uh well after
- 14:23I really can't remember judge whether or
- 14:25I had her tie him up or she tied him up.
- 14:27But anyway, I moved Basically I moved
- 14:29her to another bedroom and he was
- 14:31already secure there by the bed. Uh tied
- 14:35his feet to the uh bedpost one bedpost
- 14:38so he couldn't run.
- 14:40Uh kind of tied her in the other bedroom
- 14:42and then I came back to strangle him.
- 14:45And at that time we had a fight.
- 14:47Were you armed with a handgun at that
- 14:49time also?
- 14:49Yes, I had a handgun.
- 14:50What happened when you came back?
- 14:52had two handguns.
- 14:54Um well, when I started to strangling,
- 14:56the he's of the guard broke or he broke
- 14:59his bonds and he jumped up real quick
- 15:01like.
- 15:02I pulled my gun and
- 15:04quickly shot him. Hit him in the head.
- 15:06He fell over.
- 15:07Uh I could see the blood and as far as
- 15:09I'm concerned, he you know, I thought he
- 15:11was down
- 15:12and was out and then went and started to
- 15:16strangle uh
- 15:17Kathryn. Kathryn.
- 15:20And then we started fighting cuz bonds
- 15:22weren't very good. And so
- 15:24back and forth we fought.
- 15:27You and Kathryn? Yeah, we fought.
- 15:29And I got the best of her and I thought
- 15:31she was going down and then I could hear
- 15:32some movement in the other room.
- 15:35So I went back and Kevin
- 15:37No, no, no. I thought she was going down
- 15:40and I went back to the other bedroom
- 15:42where Kevin was at and I tried to
- 15:43re-strangle him at that time.
- 15:46And he jumped up and we fought and uh
- 15:49and he about at that time about shot me
- 15:51cuz he got the other uh pistol that was
- 15:53in my shoulder here. I had my magnum in
- 15:55my shoulder.
- 15:57So had a regular uh uh uh Shoulder
- 15:59holster? Did you have it in a shoulder
- 16:00holster?
- 16:00Yes, and I had the magnum in a shoulder
- 16:02holster. The other one was a .22. All
- 16:04right.
- 16:05And we fought at that point in time and
- 16:08I thought it was going to go off. I
- 16:09jammed the gun, stuck my finger in the
- 16:12in there, jammed it. And I think he
- 16:14thought that was the only gun I had cuz
- 16:16once I either bit his finger or hit him
- 16:18or something, got away and I used the
- 16:20.22 and shot him one more time.
- 16:22And I thought he was down for good that
- 16:23time. All right, so you shot him a
- 16:25second time.
- 16:26Yes, sir. What happened then? Uh went
- 16:28back to uh
- 16:30uh
- 16:31uh finish the job on Kathryn.
- 16:34And she was fighting.
- 16:36Uh
- 16:38and at that point in time I'd been
- 16:39fighting her and I just and then I heard
- 16:41some I don't know whether I uh
- 16:44was basically losing control. The
- 16:46strangulation wasn't working on her and
- 16:48I used a knife on her.
- 16:51You say you used a knife on her. What
- 16:53did you do with the knife? I stabbed
- 16:55her.
- 16:56I did she say I used to have two or
- 16:57three times either here or here. Maybe
- 17:00two back here and one here or maybe just
- 17:02two times back here. You're pointing to
- 17:04your lower back and your Yeah,
- 17:06underneath the ribs. In your lower
- 17:07abdomen. Yeah, underneath the ribs. Up
- 17:10up underneath the ribs.
- 17:11So after you stabbed her, what happened?
- 17:14Uh
- 17:15Actually I think
- 17:17at that point in time
- 17:19Well, it was a total mess cuz I didn't
- 17:21have control on it. She was bleeding.
- 17:24Uh she went down.
- 17:25Uh
- 17:27I think I just went back to check on
- 17:28Kevin or at that basically same time I
- 17:30heard him escape. It could be one of the
- 17:33two. But all of a sudden the front door
- 17:35of the house is open and he was gone.
- 17:37And or Oh, I'll tell you what I thought.
- 17:39I thought the police were coming at that
- 17:40time. I heard the door open. I thought
- 17:42uh that's it.
- 17:43And I stepped out there and he I could
- 17:45see him running down the street. So I
- 17:47quickly cleaned up everything that I
- 17:48could and left. All right. Now
- 17:51Mr. Rader, you indicated that at the
- 17:53Oteros you did not have a mask on. Did
- 17:55you have a mask on at the Brights? No.
- 17:57No, I didn't. Uh-uh.
- 17:59All right. So what happened then? Uh I
- 18:02tried to I had I already had the keys to
- 18:04the cars.
- 18:06Uh
- 18:07and I thought I had the right key to the
- 18:08right car. I ran out to their car with I
- 18:10think it was a pickup up there.
- 18:13And I tried it, didn't work. And at that
- 18:16point in time I was he was gone running
- 18:17down the street. I thought well, I'm in
- 18:19trouble. So I tried it, didn't work. So
- 18:21I just took off, ran. I went down went
- 18:23east and then worked back toward the WSU
- 18:26campus where my car was parked.
- 18:28All right. So you had parked your car at
- 18:30the Wichita State University campus.
- 18:32How far away were was the Brights'
- 18:35residence?
- 18:35Oh
- 18:37I parked uh
- 18:39Was it 13th?
- 18:41And they're on Let's see. They're they
- 18:43were on 13th. Was it 17th? Yeah. I was
- 18:46pretty I was just about one block south
- 18:48of 17th where the car was.
- 18:50Uh there there's a park there. I parked
- 18:51by the park.
- 18:52And then I walked to 13th uh to the
- 18:54Brights' residence.
- 18:56So I basically ran back.
- 18:58All right. So you were able to get to
- 18:59your car and get away. Yes, sir.
- 19:02Now let's turn to count number six.
- 19:05In that count, they claim on March 17th,
- 19:081977
- 19:09in Sedgwick County, Kansas, that you
- 19:12unlawfully killed Shirley Ann Bright
- 19:14maliciously,
- 19:16willfully, deliberately and with
- 19:17premeditation by strangulation.
- 19:20Inflicting injuries from which she did
- 19:22die on March 17th, 1977.
- 19:25Can you tell me what you did on that
- 19:27day?
- 19:28As before, uh Bright Ann was a uh
- 19:31Actually on that one, she was completely
- 19:34random.
- 19:36Uh there was actually someone across
- 19:37from Dillon's was potential target. Uh
- 19:41It was called project green I think. I
- 19:43had project numbers assigned to it.
- 19:45And that particular day I uh
- 19:48drove to Dillon's, parked in the parking
- 19:49lot.
- 19:50Watched this particular residence and
- 19:52then got out of the car and walked over
- 19:53to it.
- 19:54uh
- 19:55It's probably in the police report, the
- 19:56address. I don't remember the address
- 19:58now. Knocked, nobody nobody answered it.
- 20:01So, I was all keyed up, so I just
- 20:03started going through the neighborhood.
- 20:04I've been through the neighborhood
- 20:05before. I kind of knew
- 20:07a little bit of the layout of the
- 20:09neighborhood. I've been through the back
- 20:10alleys, knew where certain certain
- 20:12people live.
- 20:15While I was walking down Hydraulic, met
- 20:18a young boy
- 20:20and
- 20:21asked him if he had decent pictures.
- 20:24Kind of was a rustle, I guess, or ruse,
- 20:26as you call it.
- 20:27And kind of feel it out
- 20:29and saw where he went.
- 20:31And I went to another address and
- 20:32knocked on the door. Nobody opened the
- 20:34door, so I just
- 20:35noticed where he went and went to that
- 20:37house and we went from there.
- 20:39Now, you you call these projects.
- 20:41Were these sexual fantasies also?
- 20:44Potential hits.
- 20:47That in my world, that's what I call
- 20:48them.
- 20:49So, you were going Projects, hits.
- 20:52All right. And and why did you have
- 20:54these potential hits? Was this to
- 20:55gratify some sexual interests or Yes,
- 20:58sir.
- 20:59And I had there I had a lot of them, so
- 21:01it was just
- 21:02if one didn't work out, I just moved to
- 21:03another one.
- 21:05So, as I'm to understand it then on the
- 21:0717th of March, 1977, you saw this little
- 21:10boy go into a residence Mhm. and you
- 21:13tried another residence, no one was
- 21:15there. You tried another residence, no
- 21:16one was there, so you went to the
- 21:18residence where the little boy And I
- 21:19watched I watched where he went. What
- 21:21happened then?
- 21:22Uh after I tried this once at the
- 21:23residence, nobody came to the door, I
- 21:25went to this house where he went in,
- 21:27knocked on the door and told him I was a
- 21:29private detective, showed him a picture
- 21:31that I had just showed the boy and asked
- 21:33him if they could ID the picture.
- 21:35And at time I I had the gun here and I
- 21:38just kind of forced myself in. I just
- 21:40walked in, just opened the door, walked
- 21:41in and then pulled the pistol. What gun?
- 21:44What pistol?
- 21:45Uh
- 21:46.357 Magnum.
- 21:49So, you only had one gun with you? Yes,
- 21:51sir.
- 21:51What happened then?
- 21:53Uh I told Mrs.
- 21:56Mrs. Vianne that uh I had a problem with
- 21:59sexual fantasies that I was going to tie
- 22:01her up
- 22:03and that
- 22:05I might have to tie the kids up.
- 22:07And if she would cooperate with us
- 22:09cooperate with me at that time. Uh we
- 22:12went back. She was extremely nervous. I
- 22:13think she even smoked a cigarette.
- 22:15And then we went back to
- 22:17one of the back back areas of the porch.
- 22:20Explained to her that I had done this
- 22:21before
- 22:22and uh
- 22:24and I think she was at that point in
- 22:25time I think she was sick cuz she had a
- 22:27night robe on and I think if I remember
- 22:28right she was she had been sick and I
- 22:30think I think she came out of the
- 22:31bedroom when I went in the house.
- 22:33So, anyway, we went back to the her
- 22:36bedroom and I proceeded to tie the kids
- 22:38up and they started crying and got real
- 22:40upset. So, I said, "Well, this is not
- 22:42going to work." So, we moved them to the
- 22:43bathroom.
- 22:45She helped me and then I tied the doors
- 22:47shut. We put some toys and uh
- 22:49blankets and odds and ends in there for
- 22:51the kids, make them as comfortable as
- 22:52you could.
- 22:53Tied the we tied one of the bathroom
- 22:55doors shut so they couldn't open it and
- 22:57then we shoved she went back and helped
- 22:58me shove the bed up
- 23:00against the other bathroom door.
- 23:02And then I proceeded to tie her up. She
- 23:05got sick, threw up,
- 23:08uh
- 23:08got her a glass of water,
- 23:10comforted her a little bit and then I
- 23:12went ahead and tied her up and then
- 23:14put a bag a bag over her head and
- 23:16strangled her.
- 23:17All right. Was this a plastic bag also?
- 23:20Yes, sir. I think it was, but I could be
- 23:22wrong in that.
- 23:24Put a bag It was something. I'm sure it
- 23:25was a plastic bag, yeah. And you say you
- 23:27put a bag over her head and strangled
- 23:29her. What did you strangle her with? Uh
- 23:31I actually I think on that I had tied
- 23:33tied her legs to the bedpost and worked
- 23:35up with the rope all the way up and then
- 23:37what I had left over I looped over her
- 23:39neck.
- 23:40All right. So, you used this rope to
- 23:41strangle. Yes. I think I think it's the
- 23:44same one that I tied her body with.
- 23:46What happened then?
- 23:47Well, the the kids were really banging
- 23:49on the door, hollering and screaming and
- 23:52uh
- 23:53and then the telephone rang and they had
- 23:55talked about earlier that the neighbor
- 23:57was going to check on them, so I cleaned
- 23:58everything up real quick like and got
- 24:00out of there. Left and went back into my
- 24:01car. And when you say you cleaned
- 24:03everything
- 24:04Well, I mean, put my stuff I had a
- 24:05briefcase,
- 24:07whatever I had laying around, the ropes,
- 24:08tape, cords, I threw that in there, my
- 24:11you know, whatever you know, that I had
- 24:13that I brought in the house. Had you
- 24:15brought that to the Vianne residence
- 24:17also?
- 24:18Yeah, there was some there I I think it
- 24:21was the basic stuff, but I don't
- 24:22remember bringing total stuff like I did
- 24:24to some of the others.
- 24:26Was this a kit that you had prepared
- 24:29Yeah, I
- 24:30Yes, I called it my hit kit.
- 24:33All right, sir.
- 24:34You left the Vianne residence
- 24:37and had you parked your vehicle near
- 24:39there? I was still in the same parking
- 24:41lot there at Dillon's
- 24:42at Hydraulic and
- 24:45Where is that?
- 24:46Harry Lincoln Lincoln
- 24:48Lincoln and Lincoln and
- 24:50Hydraulic.
- 24:52All right. In count seven, it is claimed
- 24:54that on the 8th day of December, 1977,
- 24:57Sedgwick County, Kansas, that you
- 24:58unlawfully killed a human being, that
- 25:00being Nancy Fox, maliciously, willfully,
- 25:03deliberately and with premeditation
- 25:06by strangulation, inflicting injuries
- 25:08from which the said Nancy Fox did die on
- 25:11December 8th, 1977.
- 25:14Can you tell me what you did on that day
- 25:17here in Sedgwick County?
- 25:18Nancy Fox was another one of the
- 25:19projects. Uh
- 25:22When I was trolling the area,
- 25:25I noticed her going in the house one
- 25:26night.
- 25:29Sometimes I would and anyway, put her
- 25:31down as a potential victim. Uh let me
- 25:34ask you one thing, Mr. Rader. You used
- 25:36that term when you were patrolling the
- 25:37area. What do you mean by that?
- 25:40It's called stalking
- 25:42or trolling.
- 25:43So, you were not uh working in any form
- 25:46or fashion. You were just
- 25:47I don't know if
- 25:49Well,
- 25:50if you read much about serial killers,
- 25:51they go through what they call the
- 25:52different phases.
- 25:54Uh that's one of the phases they go
- 25:56through as a as a trolling stage. You're
- 25:58basically you're looking for a victim at
- 25:59that time. And that you could be
- 26:01trolling for months or years.
- 26:04But once you lock in on a certain
- 26:05person, you become stalking and that
- 26:06might be several of them, but you really
- 26:08home in on that person.
- 26:10Uh they they basically become the
- 26:13That's that's the victim. Or that's what
- 26:15you want to do.
- 26:16You said patrolling to obtain
- 26:19patrolling. You didn't say patrolling
- 26:22Oh, okay.
- 26:24No, no, I wasn't working, sir. All
- 26:26right. No, this was
- 26:28No, this was off off off my hours.
- 26:31All right. So, you basically uh
- 26:34identified Nancy Fox as one of your
- 26:38projects. What happened then?
- 26:40Uh at first
- 26:42she was spotted and then I did a little
- 26:44homework. I dropped by once to check
- 26:46mailbox to see what her name was. Uh
- 26:50Found out where she worked. Uh
- 26:52would stop by there once
- 26:54at Hillsborough.
- 26:55Kind of sized her up. I The more I knew
- 26:58about a person, the more I felt
- 26:59comfortable with it. So, I did that a
- 27:01couple times and then I just selected a
- 27:04night which was this particular night to
- 27:07try it
- 27:08and it worked out.
- 27:09All right. Can you tell me what you did
- 27:11on the night of December 8th, 1977?
- 27:15About two or three blocks away, I parked
- 27:16my car and walked to that residence. I
- 27:19knocked at the knocked at the door first
- 27:21to make sure and see if anybody was in
- 27:22there cuz I knew she arrived home at a
- 27:24particular time from where she worked.
- 27:27Uh nobody answered the door, so I went
- 27:29around to the back of the house. Uh cut
- 27:31the phone lines. I could tell that there
- 27:32wasn't anybody in the uh
- 27:34north apartment. Uh broke in
- 27:37and waited for her to come home in the
- 27:39kitchen.
- 27:40All right. Did she come home? Yes, she
- 27:42did. What happened?
- 27:44Uh I confronted her. Uh told her that I
- 27:46was a uh
- 27:48had a problem, sexual problem that I
- 27:50would have to tie her up
- 27:51and have sex with her.
- 27:53Uh
- 27:55She was uh a little upset. We talked for
- 27:59a while. She smoked a cigarette.
- 28:02Uh while while we smoked the cigarette,
- 28:03I went through her purse
- 28:05identifying some stuff.
- 28:07And she finally said, "Well, let's get
- 28:09this over with so I can go call the
- 28:10police." I said, "Okay."
- 28:12And she said, "Can I go to the
- 28:13bathroom?" I said, "Yes."
- 28:15She went to the bathroom
- 28:17and came and I told her when she came
- 28:18out to make sure she was undressed.
- 28:22When she came out, I
- 28:24handcuffed her
- 28:25and uh
- 28:27I don't really remember whether Sir? You
- 28:29handcuffed her? You had a pair of
- 28:30handcuffs? Yes, sir.
- 28:33What happened then? Well, anyway, I had
- 28:35her I handcuffed her, had her lay on the
- 28:36bed and then I tied her feet
- 28:39and
- 28:40then I
- 28:41I was also undressed to a certain
- 28:43degree.
- 28:44And then I
- 28:45got on top of her and then I reached
- 28:47down took either either her feet were
- 28:50tied or not tied, but anyway, I took I
- 28:51think I had a belt. I took the belt and
- 28:53then strangled her with the belt at that
- 28:55time.
- 28:56All right.
- 28:58All right. After you had strangled her,
- 29:00what happened then? Okay.
- 29:02Uh after I strangled her with the belt,
- 29:03I took the belt off and retied it with
- 29:05pantyhose, real tight.
- 29:07Uh removed the handcuffs
- 29:09and tied those with uh
- 29:12with pantyhose.
- 29:13Can't remember the colors right now.
- 29:15Uh I think I maybe retied her feet. What
- 29:17they had on her they were probably
- 29:18already tied, her feet were.
- 29:20Uh
- 29:21and at that time
- 29:22masturbated, sir.
- 29:25Had you had sexual relations with her?
- 29:27No. No. No. I told her I was, but I did
- 29:30not.
- 29:31So, you masturbated, then what did you
- 29:33do? Uh
- 29:35dressed and then went through the house,
- 29:37took some of her personal items and kind
- 29:39of cleaned the house up, went through
- 29:40it, made checked everything and then uh
- 29:43left.
- 29:44All right.
- 29:46You went through the residence, you
- 29:48dressed.
- 29:49He's established he was in Sedgwick
- 29:51County. I don't need to know the
- 29:52address.
- 29:57For purposes of
- 29:58this it's in Sedgwick County. Do you
- 30:00remember the address, Mr. Rader?
- 30:03Do you remember the address?
- 30:05It was Fox.
- 30:07Oh, Fox?
- 30:09Nine
- 30:13913 or 903?
- 30:16No, I I sure don't. I know it was on
- 30:18Persian.
- 30:19South Persian, that's all. I don't know
- 30:21It was a nine It was nine something,
- 30:22sir, but I don't remember the other
- 30:23digits.
- 30:24843
- 30:27The address, as I said, is really not
- 30:29important as long as you remember it
- 30:31happened here in Wichita, Sedgwick
- 30:32County.
- 30:33Yes, sir.
- 30:34All right, sir. Let's turn to count
- 30:36eight.
- 30:37In count eight, it is claimed that on or
- 30:39about the 27th day of April 1985 to the
- 30:4328th day of April of 1985
- 30:46in Sedgwick County, Kansas, it is
- 30:48claimed that you unlawfully killed a
- 30:50human being, Marine Hedge, maliciously,
- 30:53willfully, deliberately, and with
- 30:55premeditation by strangulation,
- 30:57inflicting injuries from which Marine
- 31:00Hedge did die on April 27th, 1985.
- 31:03Can you tell me what occurred on that
- 31:05day?
- 31:07Well, actually, kind of like the others,
- 31:10she was chosen.
- 31:12I went through the different phases.
- 31:14stalking phase, and since she lived down
- 31:17the street from me, I could watch the
- 31:19coming and going quite easily.
- 31:21Uh on that particular day that I uh
- 31:24uh
- 31:25I uh
- 31:27had a
- 31:28a had a commitment. Came back from that
- 31:30commitment. Parked my car
- 31:33over at uh
- 31:35Woodlawn and 21st Street uh
- 31:38at bowling alley there at time.
- 31:41Uh before that, I dressed into I had
- 31:44some other clothes on. I changed clothes
- 31:45and went to the bowling alley. Uh
- 31:47went in there
- 31:49under the pretense of bowling. Called a
- 31:50taxi. Had a taxi take me out to Park
- 31:53City.
- 31:54Uh had my kit with me. It was a bowling
- 31:56bag.
- 31:57All right, that's Park City in Sedgwick
- 31:59County, Kansas.
- 31:59Uh-huh.
- 32:00All right, you had the taxi take you to
- 32:02Park City. What happened then? Uh there
- 32:04I asked I pretended that I was a little
- 32:06drunk. I just took I just took some beer
- 32:09and pursed around my mouth and the guy
- 32:11could probably smell the alcohol on me.
- 32:12I asked told him to let me out so I
- 32:14could get some fresh air. And I walked
- 32:16from where the taxi let me out over to
- 32:17her house.
- 32:19All right, where did she live? Uh
- 32:2262
- 32:2542
- 32:2754
- 32:286254 6254
- 32:32North Independence
- 32:34All right, when you walked over there,
- 32:36what happened next?
- 32:37Well, as before, I was going to have
- 32:40sexual fantasy, so I brought my hit kit
- 32:43and lo and behold all of her car was
- 32:45there. I thought, "Gee, she's not
- 32:47supposed to be home."
- 32:49So, I very carefully snuck into the
- 32:51house, kind of like a cat burglar.
- 32:53And after checking the house, she wasn't
- 32:54there.
- 32:56So, about that time
- 32:58the doors rattled. So
- 33:01went went back to one of the bedrooms
- 33:02and hid in back there in one of the
- 33:03bedrooms.
- 33:05She came in with a male visitor.
- 33:07They were there for maybe an hour or so.
- 33:11He left. I waited till the wee hours of
- 33:13the morning.
- 33:15And then proceeded to
- 33:17sneak into her bedroom and
- 33:19flipped the lights on with a quick
- 33:20flicker. I think the bathroom lights. I
- 33:21just I didn't want to flip her lights on
- 33:23and
- 33:24and she screamed and I I jumped on the
- 33:26bed and strangled her manually.
- 33:28All right.
- 33:29Now
- 33:30were you wearing any kind of disguise or
- 33:32mask at this time? No. No. You indicated
- 33:35this woman lived down the street from
- 33:36you. Did she know you?
- 33:38Uh casually. We'd walk by and wave. She
- 33:42She liked to work in her yard as well as
- 33:43I liked to work It's just a neighborly
- 33:45type thing. It wasn't anything personal.
- 33:47I mean, just a neighbor.
- 33:49All right, so she was in her bed when
- 33:51you turned on the lights in the
- 33:52bathroom.
- 33:53Yeah, that's So, I could get some light
- 33:54in there. All right, what did you do
- 33:56then? I manually strangled her when she
- 33:58started to scream.
- 34:00So, you used your hands?
- 34:01Yes, sir. And you strangled her and she
- 34:02died? Yes.
- 34:04All right, what did you do then? Uh
- 34:06after that
- 34:08uh since I was in the
- 34:09sexual fantasy, I went ahead and
- 34:12stripped her
- 34:14and probably went ahead and I'm not sure
- 34:16if I tied her up at that point in time.
- 34:18But anyway, she was nude. I put her on a
- 34:21blanket. Went through her purse, some
- 34:23personal items in the house.
- 34:25Figured out how I was going to get her
- 34:26out of there.
- 34:28Eventually moved her to the trunk of the
- 34:30car.
- 34:33Uh
- 34:33took the car over to
- 34:35Christ Lutheran Church.
- 34:37Uh this is where the older church
- 34:39and uh
- 34:41I had to take some pictures of her.
- 34:44All right, you took some photographs.
- 34:45What kind of camera did you use? Uh
- 34:47Polaroid
- 34:49Did you
- 34:50keep those photographs? Yes, the police
- 34:52probably have them.
- 34:54All right, what happened then?
- 34:56Uh that was it.
- 34:57Then went I
- 34:59took She went through I tied it She was
- 35:01already dead, so I took pictures of her
- 35:03in different forms of bondage.
- 35:06And that's probably what got me in
- 35:08trouble with the bondage thing. So,
- 35:10anyway, that's the probably the
- 35:12the main thing. But anyway, after that,
- 35:14I
- 35:15moved her back out to the car and then
- 35:17we went east on 53rd.
- 35:21All right, what occurred then? Sir? What
- 35:23happened then? Oh, uh trying to find a
- 35:25place to hide her hide the body.
- 35:27Did you find a place? Yes. Yes, I did.
- 35:30Where?
- 35:31Uh
- 35:32couldn't tell you without looking at a
- 35:33map, but it was on 53rd between
- 35:36Greenwich, maybe.
- 35:38Maybe What's What's the other one
- 35:40between Green Greenwich and
- 35:42Webb? Webb Between I think between Webb
- 35:44and Webb and Greenwich, I found a
- 35:47ditch, a low place on the north side of
- 35:49the road and hid her there. All right,
- 35:52you say you hid her there. Did
- 35:53Well, there was some there was some
- 35:54trees, some brush
- 35:55and I laid that over the top of her
- 35:57body. All right, so you removed the body
- 35:58from the car, put her in the ditch, and
- 36:00then laid some some brush over the body.
- 36:02Yes, sir.
- 36:03All right.
- 36:05Sir, in count nine, it is claimed on or
- 36:08about the 16th day of September 1986
- 36:11in Sedgwick County, Kansas, that you
- 36:13unlawfully killed a human being, Vicki
- 36:16Wegerle, maliciously, willfully,
- 36:19deliberately, and with premeditation by
- 36:22strangulation, inflicting injuries from
- 36:24which the said Vicki Wegerle did die on
- 36:27September 16th, 1986.
- 36:31Can you tell me what you did here in
- 36:32Sedgwick County on that day that makes
- 36:34you believe you are guilty?
- 36:36As again, Vicki was Wegerle was another
- 36:39potential victim. I went through those
- 36:41different phases, locked in on her as I
- 36:43would call it, and
- 36:45uh decided that I would try that day. I
- 36:48used a ruse as a telephone repairman to
- 36:50get in her house.
- 36:52Drove there in my own personal car
- 36:55uh around lunchtime during lunch hour
- 36:58or approximately that time. It was
- 37:00earlier in the morning than that. And uh
- 37:03put my I actually went somewhere else
- 37:04and changed uh changed my clothes.
- 37:07Put on what I call my uh
- 37:09hit clothes.
- 37:11And uh Hit clothes?
- 37:12Hit clothes. Uh basically different, you
- 37:14know, things that I I need to get rid of
- 37:15later. Not Not the same kind of clothes
- 37:17I had on.
- 37:18I
- 37:20I don't know what other better word to
- 37:21use it uh crime clothes or hit clothes.
- 37:23I just called them hit clothes.
- 37:26Uh anyway, I walked from my car as a
- 37:29telephone repairman.
- 37:31As I walked there, I donned the
- 37:33telephone helmet. I had a briefcase.
- 37:35Went to one other address just to kind
- 37:37of size up the house. I'd walk by it a
- 37:38couple of times, but I wanted to check
- 37:40it a little bit more.
- 37:41Uh as I approached it, I could hear a
- 37:42piano sound.
- 37:45And went to this other door, knocked on
- 37:47it, and told them I was that we were
- 37:48recently working on telephone repairs in
- 37:50the area.
- 37:51And then went to her went to her and
- 37:54knocked on the door and asked her if I
- 37:55could come check her telephone lines
- 37:56inside.
- 37:58Did she allow you in?
- 37:59Yes, she did. What happened then? Uh
- 38:01went over and found out where the
- 38:02telephone was. Uh simulated that I was
- 38:04checking the telephone. I had a
- 38:06make-believe instrument.
- 38:08And
- 38:09after she wasn't looking away, I I drew
- 38:12a pistol at her and asked her if she'd
- 38:13go back to the bedroom with me.
- 38:15Was this the same .357 Magnum you'd used
- 38:18No, this this was a different one.
- 38:19Different pistol.
- 38:21All right, you asked her to go back to
- 38:23the bedroom with you after drawing a
- 38:24pistol on her. Yes, sir. What happened
- 38:26then? Uh told her we went back to the
- 38:28bedroom. I told her I was going to have
- 38:29to tie her up. Uh she was very upset and
- 38:33I think
- 38:35we I used some material that was in and
- 38:38that's another thing. Not sure, but I I
- 38:41think I used some material that they had
- 38:42in their bedroom.
- 38:44And after I tied her hands, she broke
- 38:47that and we started fighting.
- 38:49And we fought quite a bit back and
- 38:50forth.
- 38:51All right, she was physically fighting
- 38:53you.
- 38:53sir. What happened then? Uh finally got
- 38:56the hand on her and got a nylon sock and
- 38:58started strangling.
- 39:01So, you wrapped the stocking around her
- 39:02neck.
- 39:03Yes.
- 39:04What happened then? Uh I finally gained
- 39:06the gained on her and and and put her
- 39:08down and I thought she was dead, but
- 39:09apparently she wasn't.
- 39:11But after after she was down and not
- 39:13moving anymore, I
- 39:15uh rearranged her clothes a little bit
- 39:16and took some quick photos. I think
- 39:19three of them.
- 39:20I remember.
- 39:21And then
- 39:22after that, I
- 39:24there was a lot of commotion. She had
- 39:25mentioned something about her husband
- 39:26coming home.
- 39:28Uh so, I got out of there pretty quick.
- 39:29The dogs were raising a lot of commotion
- 39:31in the back. Doors Windows were all open
- 39:34in the house. There was a lot of noise
- 39:35when we were fighting. So, I left pretty
- 39:37quickly after that. Put everything in
- 39:38the briefcase and had her I'd already
- 39:40gone through her purse and got the keys
- 39:42to the car
- 39:43and used her car for my getaway car.
- 39:46All right. Now, you indicate that you
- 39:47thought that she was dead. Did you
- 39:48discover later that she was not dead?
- 39:50Yes, I guess the paramedics arrived and
- 39:53they tried to attempt to
- 39:55relieve her or revive her and that that
- 39:57failed. I don't know whether she died
- 39:58there or on the way to the hospital or
- 39:59at the hospital. I don't recollect.
- 40:02But you later found out that she did die
- 40:03as a result of your strangulation. Yes.
- 40:08Uh sir, let's turn to count 10.
- 40:11In that count, it is claimed that on or
- 40:13about the 18th day of January, 1991,
- 40:17to the 19th day of January, 1991, in the
- 40:21county of Sedgwick, state of Kansas,
- 40:23that you did then and there unlawfully
- 40:25kill a human being, that being Dolores
- 40:27E. Davis, maliciously, willfully,
- 40:30deliberately, and with premeditation by
- 40:33strangulation, inflicting injuries from
- 40:35which the said Dolores E. Davis did die
- 40:38on January 19, 1991.
- 40:42Mr. Rader, please tell me what you did
- 40:43here in Sedgwick County, Kansas on that
- 40:45day that makes you believe you're
- 40:47guilty.
- 40:48Uh that particular day, I had some
- 40:49commitments. I left those,
- 40:53went to one place, changed my clothes,
- 40:56went to another place, uh
- 40:58parked my car, finally made arrangements
- 41:00on my hit kit, my clothes,
- 41:03and then walked to that residence.
- 41:06Uh
- 41:07after spending some time at that
- 41:08residence, uh
- 41:10it was very cold at night.
- 41:12I had reservations about going in. I I
- 41:15had cased the place before and I really
- 41:17couldn't figure out how to get in and
- 41:18she was in the house, so
- 41:20I finally just selected a
- 41:22a concrete block and threw it through
- 41:24the plate glass window on the east and
- 41:26came on in. All right. Where is this
- 41:28residence located?
- 41:30It's on Hillside, but I couldn't give
- 41:31you address. I know it's probably 61,
- 41:34probably 62 something, on 62 something.
- 41:37North or South? North. North Hillside.
- 41:40All right. So, you used a concrete block
- 41:42to break the window? Mhm. Plate glass
- 41:44window, patio door.
- 41:45What happened then? Uh noise, I just
- 41:48went in.
- 41:49She came out of the bedroom and thought
- 41:51that a car had hit her house
- 41:53and I told her that I was I used to the
- 41:55roofs of being wanted.
- 41:58Uh I was on the run, needed food, car,
- 42:00warmth, warm up.
- 42:02And uh
- 42:03and I asked her I handcuffed her and
- 42:06kind of talked to her, told her that I
- 42:07would like to get some food, get her
- 42:10keys, her car,
- 42:11and kind of reassure her, you know,
- 42:14walk, talk with her a little bit, calm
- 42:15her down a little bit.
- 42:17And uh
- 42:19and then eventually I checked uh I think
- 42:21she was still handcuffed. I
- 42:23uh went back and checked out where the
- 42:25car was.
- 42:27Simulated getting some food, odds and
- 42:29ends in the house, that I like I was
- 42:31leaving. Then went back and removed her
- 42:33handcuffs
- 42:35and then tied her up.
- 42:37And then
- 42:38and then eventually strangled her.
- 42:41Or you say eventually strangled her?
- 42:42Well, after I tied her up,
- 42:44I went through some things in the room
- 42:46there and then and then strangled her.
- 42:49All right. You say you went through,
- 42:50were you looking for something? Mhm.
- 42:52Mostly personal items, yes. I took some
- 42:54personal items from there. Did you take
- 42:56personal items in every one of these
- 42:57incidents? Uh
- 43:00I did on the Hedge.
- 43:02Uh I don't remember anything at
- 43:05uh Vicky's place.
- 43:08The Oteros, we got the watch and the
- 43:09radio.
- 43:11I don't think I did any in Brights.
- 43:14Uh Lyons, no, I don't think so. Fox,
- 43:17yes, I took some things from Fox.
- 43:19It was hit and miss. All right. But in
- 43:21regard
- 43:21Probably if it was if it was controlled
- 43:23situation where I had more time, I took
- 43:26something, but if it if it was a
- 43:28confusion and other things, I didn't cuz
- 43:30I was trying to get out of there. All
- 43:31right. So, in regard to the Davis
- 43:33matter, you went around the room, took a
- 43:35few personal things. What did you do
- 43:36then? Uh strangled her. What did you
- 43:39strangle her with? Pantyhose.
- 43:41All right. What happened then?
- 43:43Uh kind of like Mrs. Hedge, I
- 43:46already figured out my I had a you know,
- 43:49plan on leaving and
- 43:50put her in a blanket and dragged her to
- 43:52the car, put her in the trunk of the
- 43:53car. So, you were able to strangle her
- 43:55to death with these pantyhose? Yes, sir.
- 43:58All right. You put her in your car in
- 44:00her car.
- 44:00Her car, uh-huh. In the trunk of her
- 44:02car. What happened then? Uh
- 44:05I really I had a commitment I needed to
- 44:08go to, so I moved her to one spot, took
- 44:11her out of
- 44:13her car. This gets complicated.
- 44:16Then
- 44:18the stuff I had, clothes, gun, whatever,
- 44:21I took that to another spot
- 44:23in her car, dumped that off.
- 44:27Okay. Then took her car back to her
- 44:30house.
- 44:32Uh
- 44:34left that.
- 44:35Let me think now.
- 44:39Okay.
- 44:40In the interim,
- 44:42I took her car back to her house. In
- 44:44interim, I realized that I had lost one
- 44:46of my guns. I dropped it somewhere.
- 44:48So, I was we started trying to figure
- 44:50out where my gun was, so I went back in
- 44:52the house, realized I had dropped it
- 44:54when I went in the when I broke the
- 44:55plate glass window. It dropped and fell
- 44:57on the floor right there and I found it
- 44:58right there. So, that's all that
- 45:00problem. Anyway, I went back out,
- 45:02uh
- 45:05threw
- 45:06threw the keys up on top of the roof of
- 45:07her house, walked from her car back to
- 45:11my car,
- 45:13took my car, drove it back,
- 45:16and I either dropped more stuff off or I
- 45:19picked her up and put them in my car.
- 45:21And then I drove up northeast of
- 45:24Sedgwick County and dropped her off
- 45:26underneath the bridge.
- 45:28Okay.
- 45:31So, all of these incidents, these 10
- 45:33counts, occurred because you wanted to
- 45:36satisfy a sexual fantasy. Is that
- 45:38correct?
- 45:39Yes.
- 45:42Does any party desire any further
- 45:44matters be put on the record at this
- 45:46time?
- 45:48No, Your Honor.
- 45:50All right. You may be seated, Mr. Rader.
- 45:55I will find that you, Dennis Rader, have
- 45:58knowingly, intelligently, and
- 45:59voluntarily waived your constitutional
- 46:01rights and entered your pleas of guilty.
- 46:05I will find that you understand the
- 46:06nature of the charges and the
- 46:08consequences of your plea.
- 46:10Based upon your statements to the court,
- 46:12I will find there are factual bases for
- 46:14each of these pleas of guilty.
- 46:16I will accept these pleas of guilty and
- 46:18adjudge you, Dennis L. Rader,
- 46:21guilty of murder in the first degree in
- 46:23count one, a class A felony,
- 46:26murder in the first degree in count two,
- 46:28a class A felony,
- 46:30murder in the first degree in count
- 46:31three,
- 46:33a class A felony, murder in the first
- 46:35degree in count four, a class A felony,
- 46:39murder in the first degree in count
- 46:40five, a class A felony,
- 46:43murder in the first degree in count six,
- 46:45a class A felony,
- 46:47murder in the first degree in count
- 46:49seven, a class A felony,
- 46:52murder in the first degree in count
- 46:53eight, a class A felony, murder in the
- 46:56first degree in count nine, a class A
- 46:58felony,
- 46:59and murder in the first degree in count
- 47:0210, a class A felony.
- 47:17Mr. Rader, do you desire to say anything
- 47:19on your own behalf in mitigation of the
- 47:21punishment?
- 47:23Your Honor, Sedgwick County,
- 47:25victims,
- 47:27do you realize that the crimes I've
- 47:29committed
- 47:33They were
- 47:35Okay. Uh
- 47:37The atrocious crimes I've committed is
- 47:40continue to
- 47:41The Sedgwick County is a monster.
- 47:44brought to
- 47:46community,
- 47:48my family, the victims, dishonor.
- 47:53And it's all
- 47:55And it's all self-centered. As a what
- 47:57you could call I would call a sexual
- 47:59predator.
- 48:01Today is my final judgment
- 48:03for me.
- 48:05The last presentation in court presented
- 48:07by the state
- 48:09The PowerPoint presentation was very
- 48:11powerful.
- 48:12It's like couple of things I might point
- 48:15out toward the last, but overall,
- 48:17most of that was true.
- 48:19And I think the
- 48:21Sedgwick County ought to be proud that
- 48:23they do have a good state.
- 48:26That the evidence was there earlier,
- 48:29DNA, floppy.
- 48:31There was there was no way that I was
- 48:32going to get out of this.
- 48:38With remorse, responsibility,
- 48:41and corrections,
- 48:42concepts
- 48:44of apology.
- 48:46The old me
- 48:48started whatever it was, factor X,
- 48:51sexual predator.
- 48:52The volcano was the building of all
- 48:55these years was the Otero.
- 48:57And probably the most devastating
- 49:00and upsetting to what I think everybody
- 49:02is is just me.
- 49:07I just don't know.
- 49:09Uh
- 49:09I self-centered,
- 49:11very selfish,
- 49:14and it exploded on that day.
- 49:16It did continue
- 49:18off and on.
- 49:20Dishonesty,
- 49:22definitely. Dishonesty probably the
- 49:24first thing to the people
- 49:26that I encountered,
- 49:28that they trusted me that I was going to
- 49:31tie them up, take their money,
- 49:33and leave,
- 49:34and then I killed them.
- 49:36That's
- 49:38dishonesty to my family.
- 49:48Lie and cheat
- 49:50to be self-interest to my employers and
- 49:53to the county. They would tax payers
- 49:55money.
- 50:03For ideal responsibility he doesn't have
- 50:05pride back then
- 50:07to some degree in trying to
- 50:08I dropped down through that but that's
- 50:10the media.
- 50:11They seem to crave the attention of the
- 50:13media.
- 50:14I think through years that that's quite
- 50:16hesitation during the presentation and
- 50:18all my archives that I had you can
- 50:20understand that.
- 50:22I did I think
- 50:24the bottom line of the old is a selfish
- 50:28very
- 50:29just associated with with society
- 50:32self-centered for my own purposes and I
- 50:36and I take that full burden on my
- 50:37shoulders.
- 50:42tickets
- 50:44I wrote some notes down.
- 50:48I don't know if this is really
- 50:49appropriate or not.
- 50:51And then these things came a lot of
- 50:53these came out of paper because I didn't
- 50:55I knew the people
- 50:56you all know why I chose them
- 50:59but I thought I'd share some things.
- 51:02Kathryn Bright
- 51:06And I hope I don't dwell on the media
- 51:08because
- 51:09I did use this some of this from the
- 51:10media because I didn't know this much
- 51:11from people.
- 51:14She spent time at her grandparents farm.
- 51:16Well, I did too as a kid. I have
- 51:20many many many
- 51:22fond memories there and I took that from
- 51:25She went to Valley Center.
- 51:28I was at Valley Center High School for 2
- 51:30years
- 51:31walked the halls probably the same
- 51:33line
- 51:35shared maybe some teachers although they
- 51:37would have been older.
- 51:39She worked at Coleman
- 51:41just like I did trying to fill a job
- 51:46as anybody would
- 51:47trying to keep you know his head above
- 51:49water
- 51:50and I took that from her.
- 51:53Dolores Davis
- 51:56She loved animals and I worked at animal
- 51:58control. I realize that in the early
- 52:01years
- 52:02probably did have some early animals.
- 52:05I don't think
- 52:06anybody else
- 52:08or state or anything they they would say
- 52:10I was I was always pretty good with
- 52:11animals. I have I have a great fondness
- 52:12for animals. I have pets.
- 52:14And I know she had it.
- 52:16And I read somewhere she had her last
- 52:18Christmas
- 52:20with her family.
- 52:24I did too.
- 52:25That was a wonderful time.
- 52:28I took that from her.
- 52:31Nancy Fox
- 52:33she was a wonderful person.
- 52:35And I did I did track her just like a
- 52:37predator.
- 52:40She was a wonderful young lady.
- 52:44Well organized hard worker and I took
- 52:46her life.
- 52:49Mary Edge
- 52:51She was a neighbor.
- 52:54I would walk by wave to a gardener. I
- 52:56love to garden flowers.
- 53:00She attended church.
- 53:03The same church I've been to with Boy
- 53:05Scouts.
- 53:07She also put trial
- 53:09with an air force. I was in air force.
- 53:12He was a husband. I was a husband.
- 53:15Although I always wanted to be a pilot
- 53:17always had a fascination with
- 53:18aerodynamics
- 53:19he was a pilot.
- 53:21One time even thought about taking pilot
- 53:23lessons and a veteran I was a veteran.
- 53:27So our our threads are close.
- 53:31Julie O'Carroll
- 53:33is a lot like my wife a loving mother
- 53:36raised kids
- 53:38and she also worked at Coleman.
- 53:41She also did
- 53:48She
- 53:49was a lot like our daughter
- 53:51that age
- 53:52played with her Barbie dolls. She loved
- 53:54that portrait. I loved that portrait.
- 53:57She liked to draw I liked to draw.
- 54:01Someone mentioned that she would like
- 54:02peace in her heart. I think that
- 54:04probably chose the starting of people
- 54:05and I put that down
- 54:07here.
- 54:10Joseph O'Rourke II
- 54:12He was just like me one time a boy and a
- 54:14dog. Again that comes from being a boy.
- 54:17I have many many many many memories
- 54:21and a dog.
- 54:22Excuse me.
- 54:34Anyway I had a lot of a lot of memories
- 54:36with my pets.
- 54:39Boy and a dog is a a thing you have to
- 54:41have when you're a kid.
- 54:43Shirley
- 54:46She was quiet mother.
- 54:52Probably a a very beloved mother and I
- 54:53took her life.
- 54:57Probably your beloved people I didn't
- 54:58know Vicki Myer and her much although
- 55:03I walked by her place and could listen
- 55:05to piano. I appreciate
- 55:06And I took her life. She's also
- 55:10a beloved mother.
- 55:13She attended a church that I went to
- 55:14once St. Andrews.
- 55:20I hope I haven't left somebody out on
- 55:22that.
- 55:27I think the rebuild
- 55:30community
- 55:33basically humbled myself now.
- 55:36The detention center I'm going to
- 55:41I've tried to
- 55:42realize work with the police department
- 55:45work with my defense
- 55:48tried to realize my faults.
- 55:51honesty
- 55:53Again I think I cooperated with the
- 55:54police as well as I did. I
- 55:56understand there was some smoke blowing
- 55:57that was probably my demise.
- 56:00The afterlife is smoke. The thing about
- 56:02Jake and smoke BTK story really parts of
- 56:06it are smoke.
- 56:07Problem is I did really so much smoke
- 56:09that now nobody knows facts or fiction
- 56:11and that's basically my demise.
- 56:15I've been very honest with my attorneys.
- 56:16They worked very hard.
- 56:20We met almost every day earlier before
- 56:23the plea somewhat less after that but
- 56:25it's basically all over
- 56:27and I Steven encouraged me not to go
- 56:28with an early plea
- 56:30so they could do more and
- 56:32get all the things they could with the
- 56:35floppy. They had an expert come in go
- 56:37over the floppy
- 56:38to see whether there was any problems
- 56:40with that. They did extensive research
- 56:42in the DNA.
- 56:44It was a sore spot with me when they
- 56:46took my daughter but I understand in law
- 56:47enforcement you have to do certain
- 56:49things.
- 56:51And I think honestly
- 56:53people will say I'm not a Christian but
- 56:55I I believe I'm going
- 56:58So
- 57:00Anyway
- 57:01I faced up to the man himself now.
- 57:04I lost.
- 57:06I think that all points to
- 57:07accountability
- 57:09and full responsibility now.
- 57:12And my remorse
- 57:14I think it I think it's real.
- 57:18I know the victim's family will never be
- 57:20able to forgive me.
- 57:23I hope somewhere deep down eventually
- 57:25that will happen.
- 57:29When this happened I was what I would
- 57:30say not a total
- 57:32at one time. Part of me
- 57:35only the thoughts only the thoughts that
- 57:37compartmentalized. That is
- 57:39probably as the
- 57:41the state showed started to show today
- 57:43was compartmentalization of me
- 57:45and that has been my biggest wreck I
- 57:47could put back and forth and not proud
- 57:49of that it's just I
- 57:50just just
- 57:51escape mechanism defense mechanism
- 57:54mechanism.
- 57:55I could switch back and forth fairly
- 57:57fast.
- 57:59I explained to the
- 58:01defense I was kind of like an 18 wheeler
- 58:04either uphill or downhill like I could
- 58:05switch gears very fast rapidly.
- 58:10Back and forth and as I stand here
- 58:13in this humble way there may be people
- 58:15make that I've done that gone back to
- 58:17compartmentalize but
- 58:19I don't think so.
- 58:22So anyway
- 58:23it's given me the faith to see in today
- 58:26and not let this pass or remorse.
- 58:33corrections
- 58:34This is the full responsibility. I'm
- 58:36going to the penal institution.
- 58:39I fold full burden I do not expect
- 58:41anything but the hard work I can take.
- 58:44I expected that on the plea that's why I
- 58:46stepped up with the plea.
- 58:49I knew after I talked to police and the
- 58:52evidence there wasn't any way I was
- 58:54really going to get out of this unless
- 58:55we found some way of
- 58:57of uh
- 58:58some evidence that was just totally out
- 59:00of the and the trial would have been a
- 59:02long drawn out to the plea.
- 59:04There was no way that uh
- 59:06I was ever going to get out of this.
- 59:08I thank the corrections. I'm away from
- 59:11society now.
- 59:13I'll do my healing process there as well
- 59:15as I can.
- 59:16I'll start my new chapter in life.
- 59:21And I suppose in all good time as Raider
- 59:24everybody knows Raider has to complain a
- 59:26little bit so I would like to do some
- 59:27minor ones not because I want to
- 59:29complain today but I want to set the
- 59:31record.
- 59:32This is my last time.
- 59:36The probably the biggest problem I have
- 59:38right now and we're still trying to
- 59:39answer is what happened to Mendoza. I
- 59:41had a trust with that person.
- 59:44A psychiatrist.
- 59:45He faces work on and other people work
- 59:47on it.
- 59:48That was a I just don't know what
- 59:49happened.
- 59:50And maybe that'll
- 59:52happen.
- 59:54Another one is the and I
- 59:56I'm just basically expressing this. I
- 59:59don't have a cure on that.
- 1:00:00I wish somebody would take part to is
- 1:00:02lean on my house.
- 1:00:04That
- 1:00:05the final victim as Mr. Davis said is my
- 1:00:07wife too.
- 1:00:29Excuse me, Jeff.
- 1:00:38I'll let you I'll get back to that. She
- 1:00:39is my final victim.
- 1:00:41That of my family.
- 1:00:44She knew nothing about this.
- 1:00:46And yet
- 1:00:47the laws
- 1:00:49and I understand it is the lean one on
- 1:00:50the house is because I have property.
- 1:00:52There's a lot of defendants that stand
- 1:00:54up here don't have anything to go after.
- 1:00:56I know this is very expensive.
- 1:00:57I
- 1:00:58probably defense is only somewhere near
- 1:01:009,000.
- 1:01:02It's just about what the house sold for.
- 1:01:04If we wanted to a trial it would be in
- 1:01:05millions of years.
- 1:01:07So I I just basically asked that whoever
- 1:01:10does that final judgment that they think
- 1:01:12think about the wife.
- 1:01:15The other one is uh
- 1:01:18and not a biggie.
- 1:01:19It's not this last issue is better if I
- 1:01:21ask for my wallet so I can get some
- 1:01:23personal pictures out of it. I was
- 1:01:25hoping the defense would have a court
- 1:01:26order that before I leave today I can go
- 1:01:28through that wallet and take some kind
- 1:01:30of pictures. But that's not a big issue
- 1:01:32because I understand through code of
- 1:01:34ethics the defense will turn that
- 1:01:36property over to the family as well as
- 1:01:37my clothes.
- 1:01:39So those are only those are the only
- 1:01:40really complaints except for PowerPoint.
- 1:01:44I don't and I again I don't want to pick
- 1:01:46on the law enforcement. They've done a
- 1:01:47very good job but I do want to clarify a
- 1:01:49few things.
- 1:01:50Just for the records.
- 1:01:52Because this is basically my final say.
- 1:01:55The first one there was two actors
- 1:01:58that were brought out to chain walk on.
- 1:02:00John Wayne and James Bond.
- 1:02:02The action of that with Kevin
- 1:02:05was the shooting not because I stood up
- 1:02:08and shot him.
- 1:02:09Because when I was working with the
- 1:02:11police
- 1:02:12that was a what I call a quick draw.
- 1:02:13Just
- 1:02:14like that.
- 1:02:15That's what I call the John Wayne shot.
- 1:02:17It's not that
- 1:02:19he would do something like that.
- 1:02:20Secondly, we fought. And for us to fight
- 1:02:24he had to have both his hands open.
- 1:02:26The PowerPoint said that
- 1:02:28he basically stood up and fight and shot
- 1:02:30him. That's incorrect.
- 1:02:32He He fought, I backed off. He had his
- 1:02:35hands out.
- 1:02:36And I shot him again.
- 1:02:39And again these are only minor. It does
- 1:02:41not make any difference. It's probably
- 1:02:42irrelevant. I just want to set the
- 1:02:43record straight and that's all, sir.
- 1:02:47Liane
- 1:02:48it was in the PowerPoint it was
- 1:02:50perceived that I
- 1:02:51was strangling Shirley and I stopped to
- 1:02:54cover the kids. That's just the
- 1:02:56opposite.
- 1:02:57She and her I both put the kids back in
- 1:02:59the bathroom
- 1:03:01covered in there before we went in and
- 1:03:04what happened.
- 1:03:06So the toys and all that were put in
- 1:03:07there earlier.
- 1:03:12So it's basically clarify that on that.
- 1:03:24And this is really minor.
- 1:03:26Although it makes you wonder whether the
- 1:03:28information is tainted or not evidence
- 1:03:30and what makes you speculate whether the
- 1:03:32law enforcement did to do although it
- 1:03:33looked like they did a good job or they
- 1:03:35did a fine percent.
- 1:03:37The doors Davis Graves
- 1:03:40they flipped back and forth. Anybody
- 1:03:42knows anything about geology
- 1:03:44structure those trees and stuff were not
- 1:03:46at like Cheney.
- 1:03:47They were over in eastern part of the
- 1:03:49United States.
- 1:03:50So and those pictures that came in the
- 1:03:52mail were not
- 1:03:54they were not the other ones. They were
- 1:03:55all from the grave site
- 1:03:57at Cheney.
- 1:03:59Probably most damaging to me
- 1:04:03was the pornography.
- 1:04:05They displayed yes they pornography of
- 1:04:07what I had drew but I didn't see where
- 1:04:09they had a lot of pornography but they
- 1:04:11brought two pictures out.
- 1:04:13Family will know that I didn't own a
- 1:04:14camper. I had a pickup with a camper top
- 1:04:17but it didn't have any shelves in that.
- 1:04:19So basically evidence was totally
- 1:04:21tainted. They either picked up a picture
- 1:04:23from somewhere else or inserted it or
- 1:04:25didn't realize it.
- 1:04:26It may have been a relative I'm not
- 1:04:28sure.
- 1:04:29But I would think if they had more
- 1:04:30pornography they would have showed it.
- 1:04:36That's
- 1:04:37basically the clarifications.
- 1:04:40The other thing is uh
- 1:04:43with the law enforcement uh there seemed
- 1:04:45to be
- 1:04:46I was uh
- 1:04:48played it as a dog catcher.
- 1:04:50I did go to AJ.
- 1:04:52Law enforcement.
- 1:04:53I I felt like I did have a rapport with
- 1:04:55the law enforcement people.
- 1:04:57Uh during the confession as they
- 1:04:59probably said in the paper that I still
- 1:05:01probably be talking if if the defense
- 1:05:03person didn't show up. But I we had a
- 1:05:05good rapport.
- 1:05:06I almost felt like they were my buddies.
- 1:05:08At one time I asked about Lamagna maybe
- 1:05:09coming in and him to have a cup of
- 1:05:11coffee with me.
- 1:05:12So there was a rapport. I've always had
- 1:05:13a great respect for law enforcement.
- 1:05:17Although I wore a back black hat to the
- 1:05:20white hat.
- 1:05:24Thanks.
- 1:05:27I can't believe the people that have
- 1:05:28helped me on this.
- 1:05:30Uh
- 1:05:31starting with
- 1:05:32I Now I think the use society have to
- 1:05:36even though
- 1:05:37I'm a criminal I think you have to
- 1:05:39appreciate the police department.
- 1:05:40They've done a lot of work.
- 1:05:42Even though it took a long time they
- 1:05:44gathered evidence. They added evidence.
- 1:05:46When they got the key suspect they
- 1:05:48zeroed in on it very rapidly. So to have
- 1:05:50the dedication that like Mr. Lamagna for
- 1:05:52all these years it's been great. So I
- 1:05:54think Saugus County really has a good
- 1:05:57police force.
- 1:06:00Defense
- 1:06:02this has been a unique
- 1:06:04probably a different type case
- 1:06:06that they've ever had.
- 1:06:07We've had our ups and downs but mostly
- 1:06:09they've been good.
- 1:06:10It's it it's just like a new learning
- 1:06:13curve. It's just a new curve and the
- 1:06:15media has just been terrible.
- 1:06:18Uh
- 1:06:18I worked with the media afterwards and
- 1:06:21yeah it it it I mean it's it's just it's
- 1:06:23just tremendous.
- 1:06:25They've done a very good. Sarah has
- 1:06:26probably been my
- 1:06:28probably my workhorse.
- 1:06:29I appreciate her. She's done a lot of
- 1:06:31good work. Stevie had to keep the heads
- 1:06:33on all this. And I know that it was very
- 1:06:35hard at very hard point. I want to go
- 1:06:37ahead since I worked with the defense
- 1:06:39very closely give them
- 1:06:40a little personal.
- 1:06:42I'm sure I'll go through the list here.
- 1:06:44I already mentioned Steve, Sarah
- 1:06:47McKenna.
- 1:06:48Everybody knows Steve.
- 1:06:50Another one that helped me was Jamila
- 1:06:51Mitchell. I think she's on a case today.
- 1:06:53Probably
- 1:06:54Is that correct you know Liane?
- 1:06:56Or is the one over there? Okay.
- 1:06:58Uh Liane Savage. She was a social worker
- 1:07:01that did a lot of research for me at her
- 1:07:03earlier. I appreciate her helping that.
- 1:07:05There's Jenny Bonner with a special
- 1:07:07investigator.
- 1:07:08And then Jamie Chambers she's the one
- 1:07:09that cut my hair and brought my clothes
- 1:07:10up. So I have a
- 1:07:12you know they were basically my family
- 1:07:14so I appreciate that. On professional
- 1:07:16staff although we had some questions
- 1:07:18with uh Robert J. Mendoza and what
- 1:07:20happened there I think that time that
- 1:07:22will be solved but I still have to give
- 1:07:24him credit for coming in and helping me
- 1:07:26and working with me. And I'm sure I I
- 1:07:29hope I pronounce this right. This top
- 1:07:30top of K Woolard she was the other
- 1:07:32doctor that came in. And they were all
- 1:07:34from Cambridge.
- 1:07:35We're going to see
- 1:07:37society or consultants.
- 1:07:40So I really appreciate the defense.
- 1:07:41They've done a lot for me. Kept me
- 1:07:43advised.
- 1:07:46Saugus County
- 1:07:48attention sir.
- 1:07:50Uh
- 1:07:51I was really scared when I first came in
- 1:07:52here.
- 1:07:53I've never been I've never been arrested
- 1:07:55before.
- 1:07:56I really didn't like the look. I was
- 1:07:58basically 40 43 days 42 43 days after
- 1:08:01isolation.
- 1:08:03Uh
- 1:08:04at first the officers
- 1:08:06trial officers they call them deputies
- 1:08:07down there. Five deputies were
- 1:08:10they didn't know me. I didn't know them
- 1:08:11but they they finally opened up.
- 1:08:13And they became human and I think they
- 1:08:15realized I was human too. Eventually I
- 1:08:17moved over to the pod two.
- 1:08:19Uh
- 1:08:20that's a very much camaraderie with
- 1:08:23with what I call the dirty dozen or the
- 1:08:26or the Cs in the pod. They were just a
- 1:08:27bunch of great guys. Most of those guys
- 1:08:29are gone now.
- 1:08:30But I I had a lot of good respect. I sat
- 1:08:32down with them. We're all
- 1:08:34all have crimes.
- 1:08:36But there's you basically build a
- 1:08:37camaraderie
- 1:08:39with those type people.
- 1:08:41The people that moved me around
- 1:08:44I'm what they call
- 1:08:45I call it hot peppers or habanero. They
- 1:08:47were red. We have had the special
- 1:08:49movers.
- 1:08:51And again I hope I pronounce these from
- 1:08:52the detention area I hope I pronounce
- 1:08:54these people's last names right and if I
- 1:08:56leave somebody else I apologize for
- 1:08:57that.
- 1:08:59One I had is Barbara Hinshaw.
- 1:09:01Captain Barbara Maxwell.
- 1:09:03Captain Glenn Kurtz. Lieutenant
- 1:09:07Larry Brad. Sergeant he's my main
- 1:09:09sergeant. He's one that's been
- 1:09:11very very close with me and worked with
- 1:09:13me and David Miller.
- 1:09:15And I have a lot of respect for him.
- 1:09:16He's been my main main sergeant on the
- 1:09:18judicial.
- 1:09:20And I'll probably mess up his last name
- 1:09:22but it's Daniel
- 1:09:23Fardens Brand. And I I messed that up.
- 1:09:26I'm sorry.
- 1:09:27It's their great fault.
- 1:09:29There's many many many more beyond
- 1:09:31those.
- 1:09:32I would be here a long time without
- 1:09:34help. So, I do appreciate all those
- 1:09:35people that helped.
- 1:09:39Pastor Clark
- 1:09:41He has been
- 1:09:44my main man.
- 1:09:47He comes to see me every day. Or not
- 1:09:49every day, excuse me. At least once a
- 1:09:50week, sometimes twice a week.
- 1:09:52If anybody has been dishonest to
- 1:09:54him right there.
- 1:10:02Under the house of God, I prayed to
- 1:10:04these things.
- 1:10:06Did atrocious acts.
- 1:10:11And for him to for him to stay with me
- 1:10:12and remain strong
- 1:10:18Yeah, he's a good man.
- 1:10:19I appreciate that.
- 1:10:27He also went with me
- 1:10:29earlier this week with your confession.
- 1:10:31I sat down with you each of the
- 1:10:33the people I killed.
- 1:10:35And we confessed them all.
- 1:10:38And
- 1:10:39and I felt a strengthening of bonds
- 1:10:40there at that time
- 1:10:42with him.
- 1:10:44Family,
- 1:10:45the last victims.
- 1:10:48I I don't even know where to start with
- 1:10:49them.
- 1:10:51They
- 1:10:53you know, they're still supportive a
- 1:10:54little bit.
- 1:10:55My wife's gone on, divorced.
- 1:10:57She's trying to stay out of harm's way.
- 1:11:00Uh since my kids are away,
- 1:11:03I don't get much letters or anything
- 1:11:04from them. But they're they're basically
- 1:11:05supportive.
- 1:11:10The police.
- 1:11:16Friends.
- 1:11:17Without friends, a person I don't think
- 1:11:19in this hundred what I've been here all
- 1:11:20175 176 days, you couldn't survive
- 1:11:23without friends.
- 1:11:24If you didn't have family to support
- 1:11:26you, if you don't have something or
- 1:11:27someone to come to you like Pastor
- 1:11:29Clark, you'd go down. Just mentally
- 1:11:31you'd go down.
- 1:11:33So, friends have been a very
- 1:11:35key part.
- 1:11:37The people in the pod.
- 1:11:39Uh
- 1:11:40pod deputies.
- 1:11:41And sergeant.
- 1:11:43Although they can't have a real friend
- 1:11:45relationship with a friend.
- 1:11:48I got this out this morning for the
- 1:11:50other day when I was working out. This
- 1:11:52comes from the daily devotions, a
- 1:11:53Christian book.
- 1:11:54It's called Touched by a Stranger, which
- 1:11:56is an article.
- 1:11:57And in the bottom
- 1:11:59there's an article.
- 1:12:01It's by S. There isn't a first name for
- 1:12:03it.
- 1:12:04But it's something like a friend would
- 1:12:05do, and I really appreciate it. Like the
- 1:12:07refreshing rain in the summer or the
- 1:12:09gentle breeze in the spring,
- 1:12:11just a little gift of kindness
- 1:12:13joy someone hearts can bring.
- 1:12:15With the immediate exposure to my
- 1:12:16family, they said they had to almost to
- 1:12:19stay away. So, I really didn't have any
- 1:12:20support. There was one people one person
- 1:12:23that stepped up, Christina Castner that
- 1:12:26really helped.
- 1:12:27And I really appreciate her support.
- 1:12:30There's another one that's out on the
- 1:12:31West Coast, Andy Parshall. He's another
- 1:12:33Christian, and I really support support
- 1:12:36I would have gone down a long time ago
- 1:12:37without their support. So, I do want to
- 1:12:39mention their names.
- 1:12:51A Christian Bible verse I found that I
- 1:12:53think
- 1:12:54it's helping me will help me, leading
- 1:12:57me.
- 1:12:57This is John 8:12.
- 1:13:00I am the light of the world.
- 1:13:01He who follow me shall not walk in
- 1:13:03darkness, but have life with light. Now
- 1:13:05that I've confessed,
- 1:13:08put myself out, let everybody know
- 1:13:10what's going on,
- 1:13:11I expect to heal and to have life.
- 1:13:14And then hopefully someday God will
- 1:13:16accept me.
- 1:13:23I thank Sacramento County, myself,
- 1:13:28we speak of a man as an evil man.
- 1:13:31The dark side is there.
- 1:13:33But now
- 1:13:34I think light's beginning to shine.
- 1:13:40So,
- 1:13:41I appreciate the family, friends,
- 1:13:44and all I can be thankful for.
- 1:13:47And I think that will keep me from
- 1:13:48finally going to the dark side or hell.
- 1:13:54And finally, I finally apologize to
- 1:13:57victims' families.
- 1:13:59There's no way
- 1:14:02that I can ever repay.
- 1:14:07Officer.
- 1:14:10All right. Thank you very much.
