  1. 0:00while much is still up in the air one
  2. 0:01thing is clear Democrats outperformed
  3. 0:04expectations and Republicans did not see
  4. 0:06the Red Wave they predicted let's bring
  5. 0:08in our ABC News contributors former
  6. 0:10Democratic Congressman Joe Crowley of
  7. 0:12New York and former Republican
  8. 0:13congresswoman Barbara Comstock of
  9. 0:15Virginia for more thank you both for
  10. 0:17being here Barbara there is still a
  11. 0:19chance Republicans could flip both
  12. 0:21Chambers but they have to be
  13. 0:22disappointed with these results so far
  14. 0:25what went wrong
  15. 0:27of a certainly well you know the only
  16. 0:28Red Wave we really have is uh you know
  17. 0:31maybe the ketchup on the walls at
  18. 0:33Mar-A-Lago
  19. 0:34um you know this was a case of instead
  20. 0:38of having candidates I think that we're
  21. 0:40a lot of serious candidates that we
  22. 0:42should have had maybe you know people
  23. 0:43like a Chris sununu running for Senator
  24. 0:45Governor Ducey in Arizona
  25. 0:48um you know maybe you know Pat Toomey
  26. 0:50staying on in Pennsylvania and winning
  27. 0:52that seat Donald Trump ran these people
  28. 0:54out of the party and it became a Donald
  29. 0:57Trump primary and we had these
  30. 0:59candidates who weren't you know you know
  31. 1:02you kind of had these Todd aiken-like
  32. 1:04candidates that where we lost seats
  33. 1:06before in the past and and these
  34. 1:08candidates who their only qualification
  35. 1:10in many cases are the most notable
  36. 1:12qualification was fealty to Donald Trump
  37. 1:15and people looked around and said
  38. 1:17there's a lot of problems and in the
  39. 1:18clock when we had the best climate that
  40. 1:20Republicans could ever had a bad economy
  41. 1:22you know inflation crime all these
  42. 1:25issues sets that favored Republicans we
  43. 1:28put up people that were unpalatable and
  44. 1:30Democrats said no yeah I don't think so
  45. 1:33and so really you have to look at
  46. 1:35Mar-A-Lago and Donald Trump and he is
  47. 1:37the person who uh set back this wave and
  48. 1:41him being front and center particularly
  49. 1:43at the end in places like Pennsylvania
  50. 1:45and some of these uh swing States had a
  51. 1:48very bad effect and I I think you know
  52. 1:51he holds the main responsibility but
  53. 1:52also for Republicans who have given him
  54. 1:55the keys to the car to drive it over the
  55. 1:57cliff
  56. 1:57now Joe exit polls show that inflation
  57. 2:00was the top issue for voters these
  58. 2:03elections no surprise there polls have
  59. 2:04also showed that voters tend to trust
  60. 2:06Republicans more on that issue so why
  61. 2:08then are we seeing Democrats
  62. 2:09outperforming expectations well I think
  63. 2:12because all politics is local and each
  64. 2:16district is different not one message
  65. 2:19pertains to each district and it's about
  66. 2:22personalities that as Barbara knows you
  67. 2:25know there's so many factors that go
  68. 2:26into elections like this uh hand-to-hand
  69. 2:28combat in these congressional districts
  70. 2:31and that's why I think you're seeing
  71. 2:32this how come it also shows that voters
  72. 2:34were concerned about other issues as
  73. 2:36well that was a big issue but they were
  74. 2:38worried about a woman tried to choose
  75. 2:40their word about democracy itself they
  76. 2:44have other things that they're concerned
  77. 2:45about and I think that also came through
  78. 2:47in the selection when you see especially
  79. 2:49in Pennsylvania you just heard that the
  80. 2:52the issue of abortion was the number one
  81. 2:54issue when people going to vote
  82. 2:55yesterday and and Barbara I'm really
  83. 2:57short on time but very quickly sources
  84. 3:00close to former president Trump tell us
  85. 3:01he was fuming as the results came in
  86. 3:03last night there's a lot of fanfare now
  87. 3:05over Rhonda santis governor of Florida
  88. 3:07do you think Donald Trump's time with
  89. 3:11power over the Republican party is over
  90. 3:14well I certainly have thought it should
  91. 3:16be over for a long time now I think it
  92. 3:18just depends on if Republicans are sick
  93. 3:20of losing obviously Ron DeSantis
  94. 3:22overperformed I think there are other
  95. 3:25mainstream Republican candidates that
  96. 3:27would do much better normal one
  97. 3:30Republicans who are normal one last
  98. 3:32night dewine Kemp other you know you
  99. 3:36know normal candidates won the trump
  100. 3:38candidates had a bad night Joe very
  101. 3:41quick final thoughts yeah I think it was
  102. 3:43a really bad night for Donald Trump as a
  103. 3:45kid from Queens is that that doesn't
  104. 3:47make me upset quite frankly and it was a
  105. 3:49good knife for Joe Biden I think Biden
  106. 3:51actually had a really really bolstering
  107. 3:53night despite his numbers heading into
  108. 3:55the now presidential cycle he had a
  109. 3:58really good night all right Joe Crowley
  110. 3:59Barbara Comstock thank you both
