  1. 0:00mental impact of this disaster as lights
  2. 0:01have been very very modest
  3. 0:03it's impossible to say and we will
  4. 0:05mount as part of the aftermath a very
  5. 0:08detailed
  6. 0:10environmental assessment
  7. 0:12as we go forward but all everything we
  8. 0:14can see at the moment suggests that the
  9. 0:17overall environmental impact of this
  10. 0:19will be very very modest
  11. 0:21perhaps modest over in england but in
  12. 0:23this hemisphere over here the gulf of
  13. 0:26mexico is turning to oil let me
  14. 0:29look at that map we're showing how he
  15. 0:30could follow the loop current as it's
  16. 0:32called up the east coast and destroy the
  17. 0:34east coast as well let me bring on an
  18. 0:36expert before you john let's hear from
  19. 0:37michael broon what do you make first of
  20. 0:39all the politics of this rush limbaugh
  21. 0:41who seems to be as of this moment still
  22. 0:43the recognized head of the republican
  23. 0:45party on matters everywhere what do you
  24. 0:48make of him blaming you for the oil
  25. 0:49spill uh you know rush limbaugh is
  26. 0:51always good for a good belly laugh you
  27. 0:54know we think that the issue here is
  28. 0:56what bp is saying it just shows that
  29. 0:58their recklessness doesn't extend
  30. 1:00extends well beyond their oil drilling i
  31. 1:02was down in the gulf and the pollution
  32. 1:04that we're seeing there this the oil
  33. 1:06plume that's just on the surface it goes
  34. 1:09for miles and miles and miles and it is
  35. 1:11a disaster through and through
  36. 1:14well let me ask you about this uh about
  37. 1:16the do you think they're doing a good
  38. 1:17job
  39. 1:18i mean i don't think they're doing
  40. 1:19anything but what do you think they're
  41. 1:21doing is there technology available
  42. 1:23perhaps at great cost
  43. 1:25dumping huge amounts of cement for
  44. 1:27example on that site isn't there
  45. 1:29something we would do if we thought
  46. 1:30there was a nuclear bomb ready to go off
  47. 1:32down there wouldn't we take extreme
  48. 1:34stacks i don't sense they're operating
  49. 1:36as if this is an extreme problem they're
  50. 1:38sort of doing their best i suppose but
  51. 1:40they're not doing it
  52. 1:42no they're they're not doing it but to
  53. 1:44be fair there are there are workers for
  54. 1:46bp and for others right now who are
  55. 1:48working around the clock to try to fix
  56. 1:50this the reality is that you just you
  57. 1:52can't contain a mess of this size it's
  58. 1:54it's it's very difficult because it's
  59. 1:56never been done before and that's why
  60. 1:58the sierra club has been arguing for
  61. 1:59decades that offshore oil drilling in
  62. 2:02shallow or deep water is highly risky
  63. 2:05and we can't drill our way to energy and
  64. 2:07energy independence and so
  65. 2:09we need to be focusing on a real
  66. 2:11solution to america's oil addiction and
  67. 2:12hopefully that will come as a result of
  68. 2:14this disaster look i'm worried about
  69. 2:15what's happening what we're watching now
  70. 2:16not the long-term problem i want that
  71. 2:18fixed i don't know why we can't fix it
  72. 2:20john jones why can't we fix it are they
  73. 2:22doing it their best
  74. 2:24i think they are doing their best i have
  75. 2:26no evidence chris that anybody is is you
  76. 2:28know
  77. 2:29holding back uh that there's more that
  78. 2:31that could be done i and i kind of defer
  79. 2:33to michael on this one i i think that
  80. 2:35they're trying very hard i think people
  81. 2:37are working hard but it's too late and
  82. 2:39you know the really horrible thing in
  83. 2:41all this is that there there's been
  84. 2:43evidence that there was an accident
  85. 2:45coming 60 minutes did an amazing segment
  86. 2:47on this showing that they knew that
  87. 2:49there was some defect with the blowout
  88. 2:52preventer and they didn't fix it they
  89. 2:55just kept drilling deeper and deeper and
  90. 2:56for rush to say that the sierra club
  91. 2:59wants them to drill deeper is just
  92. 3:01preposterous deeper drilling is riskier
  93. 3:03drilling bp push to drill deeper without
  94. 3:06safety controls and they are completely
  95. 3:09culpable for this
  96. 3:10why didn't they fill with drilling mud
  97. 3:12instead of seawater right up about
  98. 3:14michael i'm sorry was your question
  99. 3:16why didn't they fill it with drilling
  100. 3:18mud before they before they capped it
  101. 3:20they're blaming all this on the bop the
  102. 3:21blow up preventer why didn't they jam
  103. 3:22all the dirt in there they used to do it
  104. 3:24that way that's the recognized way to do
  105. 3:26it why didn't they do it it's standard
  106. 3:28operating procedure because bp is trying
  107. 3:30to maximize profits from from this
  108. 3:32particular operation like they try to do
  109. 3:33everywhere else they're cutting corners
  110. 3:35and now we see what the what the
  111. 3:37consequences of that are the the problem
  112. 3:39one of the problems just one of the
  113. 3:40problems here is that there's not
  114. 3:42effective oversight there's not an
  115. 3:44effective regulatory mechanism obama was
  116. 3:46right in saying that the relationship
  117. 3:48between government the government
  118. 3:50regulators and the oil industry is far
  119. 3:52too cozy we have to separate oil and
  120. 3:54state this is the there's no oversight
  121. 3:57on a highly risky
  122. 3:59a very dangerous and what we now see is
  123. 4:01a very deadly process it's uh
  124. 4:03it's a tragedy for the environment but
  125. 4:05it's it's a tragedy for the the families
  126. 4:06of the workers who are killed
  127. 4:09my work joan i have no confidence we
  128. 4:11have regulation by the government i have
  129. 4:12no confidence that we have
  130. 4:13self-regulation here i have no
  131. 4:15confidence that they're going to fix
  132. 4:17this problem i have only the fear that
  133. 4:19this is going to go on and on and on and
  134. 4:22we're going to destroy our east coast
  135. 4:24it's just going to keep going and the
  136. 4:26president's going to sit and watch it
  137. 4:27like he's a vatican advisor at some
  138. 4:29point we either move in there bring the
  139. 4:31seabees in bring i don't know the army
  140. 4:34corps whoever we have at our disposal
  141. 4:36and put i'd like to put all those i've
  142. 4:38said it before i like to take those ceos
  143. 4:40and put them down there a mile and make
  144. 4:42them stay down there the problems fixed
  145. 4:43i know that sounds a bit extreme but
  146. 4:45nothing seems to be getting done here
  147. 4:47and they're sitting home chomping on
  148. 4:48their stakes and their profits and this
  149. 4:50is still getting worse and it's getting
  150. 4:52worse and worse it's getting worse and
  151. 4:54worse and ridiculously they're pointing
  152. 4:56the fingers at one another and saying
  153. 4:57it's not my fault it's his fault you
  154. 4:59know i i'm i don't want to be cynical
  155. 5:01about this chris i believe that good
  156. 5:04government oversight can happen and i
  157. 5:06believe that when government pays
  158. 5:07attention corporate america pays
  159. 5:09attention to they don't want people to
  160. 5:11die they want to make money they i know
  161. 5:13this sounds naive of me they don't want
  162. 5:15people to die this was a horrible thing
  163. 5:17and i think it's also unfortunate that
  164. 5:19president obama had recently come out
  165. 5:21and said he supports oil drilling when
  166. 5:22he knows better the only way to make
  167. 5:24sure this doesn't happen is to really
  168. 5:26crack down on oil drilling it is unsafe
  169. 5:29it is unnecessary and we'll see more
  170. 5:30accidents like this if we keep it up
  171. 5:33okay let me ask you mike a bottom line
  172. 5:34are they going to open the cap and
  173. 5:36they're going to let these sides off
  174. 5:36with 75 million
  175. 5:38uh no i can't imagine that that would
  176. 5:40happen right now what we expect we'll
  177. 5:42see tighter safety regulations there'll
  178. 5:44be a a much higher cap and what we
  179. 5:46should be seeing is executives like the
  180. 5:48bp's ceo prosecuted and thrown in jail
  181. 5:51this is what's happening in the gulf is
  182. 5:53criminal and there better be
  183. 5:54accountability
  184. 5:55so what do you think we should do do you
  185. 5:57think to see who else should go to jail
  186. 5:58the board of directors the management
  187. 6:00who because somebody decided not to
  188. 6:02follow the regular procedure it's
  189. 6:04management i'm tired of hearing
  190. 6:05technology being blamed management
  191. 6:08presides over the use of technology
  192. 6:10everything that's ever gone wrong in
  193. 6:11this industry has gone wrong before and
  194. 6:13have set up protocols to deal with it
  195. 6:15they didn't follow the protocols they
  196. 6:16didn't file the management procedures
  197. 6:18that's what happens when things go wrong
  198. 6:19this idea this the first time this has
  199. 6:21ever happened is crazy this happens
  200. 6:23around the world you got to be ready for
  201. 6:24it joan there's a political problem for
  202. 6:26the president i don't like his
  203. 6:28laissez-faire attitude about this i
  204. 6:30don't like him stepping back and letting
  205. 6:31the heat go on the oil company when the
  206. 6:34damage is being done to us not the oil
  207. 6:36company i think he needs to step back in
  208. 6:39i think he had a few days of sounding
  209. 6:40you know very resolute and very uh very
  210. 6:43much leaning on the oil companies but
  211. 6:45you know it's the republicans i gotta
  212. 6:46say here chris it's the republicans who
  213. 6:48are opposed to lifting the liability cap
  214. 6:51you know after they railed against
  215. 6:52bailouts because frank luntz told them
  216. 6:54americans don't like bailouts if it were
  217. 6:56up to the republican party the taxpayer
  218. 6:58would be bailing out bp not the other
  219. 7:01way around so i think they've got to
  220. 7:02fight to make sure that they pay that
  221. 7:04they're responsible for paying for the
  222. 7:05cleanup and then they've got to fight
  223. 7:06for better regulation and you're right i
  224. 7:08do want to see president obama out okay
  225. 7:11i want to see harry truman in the white
  226. 7:12house right now i want harry truman to
  227. 7:14come back and do the job because if this
  228. 7:15was the the cold companies or something
  229. 7:17else we really depended on the president
  230. 7:19would intervene thank you michael broon
  231. 7:21and but get on this stick michael by the
  232. 7:22way you don't seem that excited about
  233. 7:24this
  234. 7:25we're counting on guys like you john
  235. 7:26walsh thank you
