- 0:37today's stories.
- 0:39[music]
- 0:54On the night of December 20th, 1630, a
- 0:57man named James Graham tossed and turned
- 0:59in his bed in the village [music] of
- 1:01Great Lumbly, England. James, you know,
- 1:04for the most part, was able to sleep
- 1:05through the night on any given night.
- 1:07But tonight, for whatever reason, you
- 1:09know, maybe he was stressed, maybe he
- 1:10was anxious, but he [music] just he
- 1:12couldn't sleep. And so as his wife next
- 1:14to him is, you know, snoring away, he's
- 1:16just sort of wired [music] laying there
- 1:18in bed. And at a certain point, he just
- 1:20he thought about maybe getting up to to
- 1:22go [music] outside and go for a walk,
- 1:24you know, cuz he just feels like he
- 1:25can't sleep. And so he sat up on the
- 1:27side of his bed [music] and there was a
- 1:29window right next to his bedside that
- 1:31looked out into his backyard. Actually
- 1:32looked out to the area basically between
- 1:34his and his neighbor's house. And so he
- 1:36just happens to look outside and, you
- 1:38know, it's it's the middle of the night.
- 1:40It's dark, but there's pretty decent
- 1:41illumination from the moon. And he looks
- 1:44out and he sees something that just
- 1:46[music] didn't make any sense. He sees
- 1:48there's this this woman just
- 1:50inexplicably standing underneath this
- 1:53tree [music] that was sort of situated
- 1:54between he and his neighbor's house and
- 1:56her back was to him and she's just
- 1:58standing there like she's wearing her
- 2:00her night gown and she's just standing
- 2:02there under this tree. And remember this
- 2:04is the middle of the night and [music]
- 2:06you know there were women that lived in
- 2:08the area but immediately you know James
- 2:10actually couldn't even recognize who
- 2:12this woman was. [music] And so now you
- 2:15know he's already wired he can't sleep.
- 2:17But more than anything he's just so
- 2:19curious and frankly kind of unnerved by
- 2:21this [music] person. Like there was no
- 2:23reason for her to be out there. And so
- 2:25finally James is like I should probably
- 2:27go out there [music] and just make sure
- 2:29she's okay. Like this is so unusual. And
- 2:32so as quietly as he could, he climbed
- 2:34out of [music] his bed, you know, being
- 2:35careful not to wake his wife and he
- 2:37walked over to the stairs. He goes down
- 2:39[music]
- 2:40and he goes out his front door and he
- 2:42walks around to the side of his property
- 2:43and sort of a little bit apprehensively
- 2:45he looks over towards this woman who's
- 2:47still from his perspective, her back is
- 2:49to him and she's still just standing
- 2:51there underneath this tree. And now as
- 2:54he's as he's walking closer to her, even
- 2:56though he's come out here to help her,
- 2:58you know, presumably to help her if she
- 2:59needs help, he can't help but feel like
- 3:02just something's really off here. Like
- 3:04it was it was scary almost as he's
- 3:06walking in the middle of the night
- 3:07towards this this person. But he kept
- 3:10walking cuz he's really curious and he
- 3:12wanted to make sure she was okay. And he
- 3:14finally gets up to this woman and like
- 3:17right as he's behind her and he's making
- 3:18enough noise that she should hear him
- 3:20and turn around, she doesn't. She
- 3:22continues to stand there. And so he
- 3:24walks around her and he looks at her and
- 3:26immediately he's struck by her
- 3:27appearance. She just looks like very
- 3:29ghastly, like pale, you know, not really
- 3:32any expression on her face. And even
- 3:34though she's looking at him now, now
- 3:36that he's standing in front of her, it's
- 3:38almost like she's looking past him. And
- 3:40James, he's like, "Hey, are are you
- 3:42okay? Like what are you doing out here?
- 3:44Also, who are you?" Like he had no idea
- 3:46who this woman was. And the woman at
- 3:48first she just kind of continued to to
- 3:50stare off through James like off into
- 3:53the distance like she's in this this
- 3:54catatonic state. But then at some point
- 3:58she sort of focused and looked at James
- 4:01and she told him something that just
- 4:03completely scared James. Like he
- 4:06couldn't believe what she was saying to
- 4:08him. I mean already this is so creepy,
- 4:11so weird. But like the weight of what
- 4:14this woman has just told him about why
- 4:16she's out here, it was just too much for
- 4:19him. He was horrified. And so for a
- 4:21minute there, James really just [music]
- 4:23stood there and didn't even know how to
- 4:25react to this woman. But eventually, he
- 4:28sort of got the courage up and he he
- 4:30asked her like, "Are you sure? Are you
- 4:33sure what you're telling me is true?"
- 4:35And the woman, she confirmed that
- 4:37everything she was telling him was very
- 4:39real. And then before James could ask
- 4:42any more follow-up questions, the woman
- 4:44just sort of went back to that that
- 4:46vacant stare where she's no longer
- 4:48focused on him. And she walked off
- 4:50around the corner and just vanished into
- 4:53the night. And so James, he's just left
- 4:55standing under this tree really having
- 4:57no idea what to make of what's [music]
- 4:59just happened. But at his core, he is
- 5:02truly shaken up by by this experience.
- 5:04[music]
- 5:05But eventually he does go back inside
- 5:07his house. He gets into bed and he does
- 5:09eventually fall asleep.
- 5:12But then the next morning when he gets
- 5:13up, like as soon as his eyes are open,
- 5:16all he can think about is that woman and
- 5:18what she told him. It's like that was
- 5:21not a bad dream. This this really
- 5:22happened and and I need to do something
- 5:25with this information I've been given.
- 5:27And so later that morning, James headed
- 5:30over to the local magistrate's office.
- 5:32So the local magistrate was sort of like
- 5:34the the lead prosecutor, the lead
- 5:36investigator, sort of like the the chief
- 5:38authority figure when it came to law and
- 5:40order in the town. And so his name was
- 5:43Thomas Hardcourt. And so James, he walks
- 5:46into the office and Thomas in virtue of
- 5:48this being a small town, he knew James.
- 5:50James was, you know, the the owner of a
- 5:52local mill and he was known to be a very
- 5:54level-headed guy. And as soon as he sees
- 5:57James, this is Thomas the magistrate. As
- 5:59soon as he sees James coming into his
- 6:01office, he's like, "Oh, James, how you
- 6:02doing?" Like, "What can I help you
- 6:04with?" And James, like, you know, he's
- 6:06fidgeting with his hat, like he's he's
- 6:07clearly nervous. And at some point, he
- 6:11he told the the magistrate about this
- 6:13totally bizarre interaction he had with
- 6:15this woman. But it was not so much the
- 6:18interaction itself. It was it was the
- 6:19information she gave him. This woman
- 6:22told him that apparently there was a
- 6:24dead body in the coal mine. And more
- 6:26than that, there was evidence near the
- 6:29body that would actually show who did
- 6:32it. And you know, James, as he's telling
- 6:34Thomas, he can see that Thomas is sort
- 6:36of skeptical cuz this whole thing feels
- 6:37sort of like, wait, who said this? Like,
- 6:40under what context was this said? But
- 6:42James said to Thomas like, "I don't know
- 6:44why this felt so convincing, but I'm
- 6:47telling you, it just felt real. I think
- 6:50you should go investigate and see if
- 6:52there actually is a body out there." And
- 6:54then he described to Thomas explicitly
- 6:56where this woman claimed the body was
- 6:59within the coal mine. And so Thomas, he
- 7:02hears all this and, you know, he's he's
- 7:03a man of the law and and he knows, you
- 7:06know, his understanding of who James is
- 7:08is he's this level-headed guy who
- 7:10wouldn't necessarily make up, you know,
- 7:12tall tales. But immediately he's like,
- 7:14"This just this doesn't feel legitimate.
- 7:17Like, this is pretty unreliable." But
- 7:19James seemed so convinced that Thomas
- 7:22was like, "All right, yeah, we'll we'll
- 7:24go take a look later today." And so
- 7:26later that day, the magistrate, Harkort,
- 7:28along with the team, they head out to
- 7:30this this coal mine, which it wasn't
- 7:32really like an underground mine. It was
- 7:33more like a big open field with a bunch
- 7:35of deep pits where coal had been dug out
- 7:38of the ground. And they headed to this
- 7:40one particular area where James had said
- 7:42this woman had said to go look for this
- 7:44body. And now keep in mind like like the
- 7:47magistrate [music] and his team, they're
- 7:49doing this, but there's not a lot of
- 7:50conviction behind this search. I mean,
- 7:52they're sort of checking a box here and
- 7:54they have no expectation they're
- 7:55actually going to find anything. But
- 7:57sure enough, they get to that spot and
- 7:59they look at the ground and there's like
- 8:01a little piece of fabric poking out of
- 8:02the dirt. Wouldn't necessarily have
- 8:04caught anybody's attention unless you
- 8:06had come here to look for this, but sure
- 8:08enough, it's like, okay, that's odd.
- 8:10They pull on the fabric and out of the
- 8:13ground comes this bloody shirt [music]
- 8:16and you know Harkwart and his team
- 8:17they're like oh my goodness. They dig
- 8:19away the rest of the dirt and underneath
- 8:21the [music] shirt was a dead body. It
- 8:23was a dead woman's body and then next to
- 8:25the body was was a pickaxe with all this
- 8:28dried blood all over it. The instant
- 8:30this discovery was made, [music] Harkort
- 8:32began to think about all the other
- 8:34things James had told him in his office
- 8:36that morning. Cuz James had not just
- 8:38come in and said, [music] "Hey, uh, a
- 8:40lady told me there's a dead body in the
- 8:41coal mine. It's in this area. Go check
- 8:43it out." Like, no. James had provided
- 8:45[music] an enormous amount of context
- 8:47around this discussion he had apparently
- 8:49had with this woman the night before
- 8:51that had led to him coming into the
- 8:52magistrate's [music] office. But the
- 8:54magistrate had totally discounted the
- 8:56whole story. The whole time he was
- 8:58listening, and he had sort of written it
- 8:59all off and then ultimately at the end
- 9:01said, "Fine, we'll go check it out." But
- 9:03now he's actually found the body in the
- 9:05spot where James claimed. And so
- 9:07suddenly all the other things James said
- 9:10probably were true or some of them had
- 9:12to be true. When James talked to Harkort
- 9:15and told him about this body and where
- 9:17to go look for it, he also said that
- 9:20according to this woman, the dead body
- 9:22belonged to a woman named Anne Walker.
- 9:25And Anne Walker actually happened to be
- 9:27James' neighbor's niece. And she was
- 9:30actually missing. And more than that,
- 9:33James had been told that the person who
- 9:36killed Anne Walker was her own uncle,
- 9:39James's neighbor. Apparently, Anne had
- 9:42gotten pregnant by her uncle, James'
- 9:45neighbor, and he had killed her with a
- 9:48pickaxe because he didn't want the baby.
- 9:50And then the the neighbor and a friend
- 9:52had then buried Anne Walker's body in
- 9:55the coal mine. And so again, like
- 9:57Thomas, when he first heard it, he
- 9:58discounted it, but now he's seeing the
- 10:01body. And also, oh, by the way, he knew
- 10:03who Anne Walker was, knew she was
- 10:05missing. [music] And clearly that is
- 10:07Anne Walker in this shallow grave. And
- 10:10there's a bloody pickaxe. Like, oh my
- 10:12goodness, it's all true. And so Harkort
- 10:15and his team, they launch, you know,
- 10:16obviously a full-scale investigation
- 10:18into this murder. And you know,
- 10:20admittedly, they did consider that maybe
- 10:23James made up this elaborate story and
- 10:25he's the killer. But no, after gathering
- 10:27all the evidence and looking at all the
- 10:29pieces they had, it was very clear that
- 10:32James had nothing to do with this and
- 10:34that it was the uncle whose name was
- 10:36John Walker who killed Anne Walker. And
- 10:39John also had an accomplice whose name
- 10:41was Mark Sharp who helped bury the body.
- 10:43And so ultimately, Jon and Mark are
- 10:46arrested for this murder. But none of
- 10:48this is the reason why today, 400 years
- 10:51later, we still talk about this case.
- 10:53No, the reason we still talk about it
- 10:55has to do with James. So James was
- 10:58proven without a doubt to have had
- 11:00nothing to do with this murder. Nothing.
- 11:03He had no knowledge of it other than
- 11:06that woman he met under the tree in the
- 11:07middle of the night. She passed that
- 11:09information to him that he passed to the
- 11:11magistrate. That's his only connection.
- 11:13He would have had no idea about this
- 11:15case in any way, shape, or form if not
- 11:17for talking to that woman. And James, do
- 11:20you know who he said that woman was?
- 11:22That was Annne Walker, the deceased
- 11:25woman. So apparently he was talking to
- 11:29her ghost.

- 12:47On a Saturday evening in October of
- 12:491974,
- 12:51a 30-year-old woman named Jesse Fonda
- 12:53looked out the car window as her husband
- 12:55Bill drove them down the interstate in
- 12:57Asheville, North Carolina. So Jesse and
- 12:59Bill had just moved to Asheville and
- 13:01they'd been out all day exploring their
- 13:03new city. But now it was getting dark
- 13:05and so they were on their way back home
- 13:07to their apartment. But as they
- 13:09approached their exit, Jesse noticed
- 13:11this young man with bushy red hair
- 13:14walking along the side of the road, like
- 13:16just walking along the highway all by
- 13:17himself. And so immediately Jesse's
- 13:20thinking he's got to be a hitchhiker.
- 13:22So, this was the 1970s and hitchhiking
- 13:25at the time was pretty accepted and
- 13:27pretty common. And so, Jesse's making
- 13:30the assumption that this has got to be a
- 13:31hitchhiker. And more than that, she
- 13:34thought this guy looked just sad, like
- 13:37he needed help. And so, reflexively, she
- 13:40turned to Bill and said, "Why don't you
- 13:41pull over and see if you know, maybe we
- 13:43could help him?" And so, Bill, he nodded
- 13:45and pulled over a moment later. And as
- 13:48their car came to a stop, she rolled
- 13:50down her window and she asked this guy
- 13:52where he was headed. And the guy seemed
- 13:53really happy that they had pulled over
- 13:55to talk to him. And he quickly said that
- 13:57his name was Clayton and he was in town
- 13:59for work [music] and he was supposed to
- 14:00be on his way home to his wife and his
- 14:02baby in Tennessee, but his truck had
- 14:05broken down at the Hollywood Motel on
- 14:07the edge of town. And so now he was
- 14:08walking around looking for a mechanic.
- 14:10[music] And Jesse, when she heard that,
- 14:12she was like, "Well, great. My husband
- 14:15Bill is a really handy guy and he's got
- 14:17a toolbox in the trunk. So, why don't
- 14:19you hop in and we'll go find your truck
- 14:21and we'll get you fixed up and get you
- 14:23back on the road. A couple of hours
- 14:24later, around 9:00 p.m., Jesse leaned up
- 14:27against the side of Clayton's beat up
- 14:29blue pickup truck back in the Hollywood
- 14:31Motel parking lot. Bill and Clayton were
- 14:34still busy at work, you know, under the
- 14:35hood of this truck. [music] And by this
- 14:37point, their arms are totally covered in
- 14:39grease. And Jesse, you know, even though
- 14:41she didn't regret helping Clayton out
- 14:43here, she was ready to go home. Really
- 14:46for two reasons. [music] The first one
- 14:47was this truck favor had turned out to
- 14:50be a much bigger endeavor than she or
- 14:52her husband had expected. I mean, the
- 14:54men had been working on this truck now
- 14:56for almost 2 hours, and it still was not
- 14:59running, and it wasn't even clear if
- 15:00they'd get it running. And the second
- 15:02reason that Jesse was pretty ready to
- 15:04leave here was that she was starting to
- 15:06feel a little uneasy about Clayton.
- 15:09Specifically, his story just seemed sort
- 15:13of off. So, this motel had turned out to
- 15:16be miles and miles away from where they
- 15:18had ultimately picked Clayton up on the
- 15:20side of the interstate. And Jesse just
- 15:22didn't understand now that, you know,
- 15:24she had been here and sort of thought
- 15:26about it, why Clayton had walked all the
- 15:30way out where they had found him to look
- 15:31for a mechanic. [music] Like, why didn't
- 15:34he just go in the front office of this
- 15:36motel and ask them if they could find a
- 15:38mechanic or call a mechanic? Like, why
- 15:40would you walk miles and miles hoping
- 15:43you'd like find a mechanic? But Jesse
- 15:46reminded herself that part of the reason
- 15:48she had decided to tell her husband to
- 15:50pull over and help this guy was because
- 15:53Clayton just looked really distraught,
- 15:55like there were clearly bigger issues in
- 15:57his life beyond whatever mechanical
- 15:59troubles he was having. And so she
- 16:01thought, you know, maybe he just wasn't
- 16:02thinking clearly and he had made a bad
- 16:03decision and before long he's miles away
- 16:05and thankfully they were there. But
- 16:07still, it was like, this whole thing's
- 16:09weird. I'd like to go home. And luckily,
- 16:11just then, Jesse overheard her husband
- 16:13tell Clayton to go ahead and try the
- 16:16ignition again. And so, Clayton, he
- 16:18climbed in the driver's seat. And when
- 16:19he turned the key, the truck roared to
- 16:22life. Jesse was relieved. Bill was
- 16:24clearly relieved. And Clayton seemed
- 16:27very relieved. So happy. He immediately
- 16:30shook Bill's hand. And he thanked him.
- 16:32He thanked Jesse for all their help. And
- 16:34then, as Clayton's truck sputtered out
- 16:36of the parking lot, Jesse and Bill went
- 16:38back to their car. And you know, after
- 16:40being like, "Phew, I'm glad that's
- 16:42over," they drove back to their
- 16:44apartment. However, once they finally
- 16:46got home that night, Jesse just couldn't
- 16:48fall asleep. And after tossing and
- 16:51turning for a long while, she eventually
- 16:53just gave up on sleep and got out of
- 16:55bed. And then when she was out of bed,
- 16:57she walked into the living room where
- 16:59they had these big French doors that
- 17:01looked out onto the street. [music] And
- 17:03Jesse, you know, she's basically
- 17:04wandering around the house at this
- 17:05point, waiting to get tired enough to go
- 17:07back to bed. She just [music] found
- 17:09herself absent-mindedly staring out
- 17:11these French doors, like out onto the
- 17:13road. And at first, she didn't really
- 17:15even register what was out [music]
- 17:16there, cuz it's the middle of the night.
- 17:18It's quiet. It's dark. But then she
- 17:20focused on something that was out there.
- 17:22She saw this beat up blue pickup truck
- 17:26[music] parked out front underneath the
- 17:28street light with a a man with bushy red
- 17:30hair working on the car like under the
- 17:33hood. and she's staring at this guy in
- 17:35this car who, you know, he's not paying
- 17:37her any attention. It's it's [music] odd
- 17:38that he's doing repairs in the middle of
- 17:40the night, but she's she's staring at
- 17:42him and she realizes
- 17:45it's Clayton. And Jesse, she has no idea
- 17:49why Clayton would be here. And why is he
- 17:51again working on his car? They just
- 17:53fixed his car. Like, there's so many
- 17:55questions here. But more than anything,
- 17:57she's thinking, I didn't tell him where
- 18:00we lived. So, either this is the
- 18:03craziest coincidence or he's somehow
- 18:06figured out we live here and and he's
- 18:08come here, but like to what end? [music]
- 18:10To fix his truck again outside our
- 18:13window? Like, what in the world's going
- 18:15on here? So, now feeling kind of
- 18:18frantic, she rushed back into the
- 18:19bedroom and she shook her husband awake
- 18:22and she said, "Like, did you give
- 18:24Clayton our address cuz he's outside?
- 18:26Like, did you did you tell him where we
- 18:27live?" And Bill's like half asleep, but
- 18:29he's like, "No, why would I do that?
- 18:31What are you talking about? He's he's
- 18:32outside. What do you mean? And so Jesse
- 18:34again, it's like he he he's outside.
- 18:36He's working on his blue truck right
- 18:38outside. Like go look for yourself. And
- 18:40so Bill, he gets out of bed. He goes
- 18:42into the living room and he looks out
- 18:44onto the road and there's nothing there.
- 18:47And he's like, "Where, Jesse? Where
- 18:48where is Clayton? I I don't see anyone
- 18:50out there." And Jesse, she walks over
- 18:52and she's like, "What? I just saw him.
- 18:55He was he was right there right across
- 18:57the street under that street light. I I
- 18:58I don't know where he is. And Bill's
- 19:01like, "Come on. Like, there's no way he
- 19:03would have been here. Like, you're just
- 19:05seeing things. You're half asleep. It's
- 19:07the middle of the night. Like, just just
- 19:08go to bed. Like, he's not here. Forget
- 19:10about it." Jesse was pretty annoyed
- 19:12because she's like, "I know what I saw."
- 19:14But at the same time, she's like, "I
- 19:16just saw him. Like, if he had left, I
- 19:18would I would have heard the vehicle."
- 19:19And also, does that mean he fixed his
- 19:21truck [music] like in the last 10
- 19:22seconds and got in the car and drove
- 19:24away? Like, she would have heard it. The
- 19:27timing didn't make sense. And so she
- 19:28began to tell herself like, "Man, maybe
- 19:30I am seeing things. It is the middle of
- 19:32the night. Maybe I'm like sleepwalking
- 19:33or something." And so before long, she
- 19:36and Bill climbed back in bed and went to
- 19:38sleep. After this, Jesse and Bill didn't
- 19:41see Clayton again. And so pretty
- 19:43quickly, they just put him out of their
- 19:44minds and moved on with their lives.
- 19:46However, a month later, when Jesse and
- 19:49Bill were driving down the interstate
- 19:50about 20 minutes outside of Asheville on
- 19:53their way to go look at a house they
- 19:54were interested in buying, Jesse was
- 19:57looking out the window and she was just
- 19:59trying to imagine what life would be
- 20:00like if they ended up living out here.
- 20:02She's staring at the scenery, just
- 20:03daydreaming
- 20:05when she happens to look up ahead off to
- 20:07the side of the highway and she sees
- 20:10there's this blue pickup truck that's
- 20:13not parked on the side of the road. It's
- 20:15like off the side of the road like it's
- 20:17gotten into an accident. And
- 20:19immediately, even though she and Bill
- 20:21have not even thought about or seen or
- 20:23or talked about this guy Clayton in
- 20:25forever, immediately she's like, "That
- 20:27looks like Clayton's truck." Which
- 20:29didn't make any sense. I mean, why would
- 20:30he be out here? Why would they see him
- 20:32again? There's a lot of questions here.
- 20:34But as they got closer, she told Bill
- 20:36like, "Look, that that looks like
- 20:37Clayton's truck." And as they're both
- 20:39staring at it, they couldn't see [music]
- 20:40anybody in the truck. And it was off the
- 20:43road. It was like in a ditch off the
- 20:45side of the road. And as they got
- 20:46closer, they saw the truck was kind of
- 20:48mangled. And they're like, "Oh my
- 20:50goodness, not only is this Clayton
- 20:52probably, but he's been in a car
- 20:54accident." Like, what are the odds?
- 20:56We're going to we're going to we're
- 20:58going to be the ones to like rescue him
- 20:59from this car accident. Like, what
- 21:01what's going on here? Like, this is this
- 21:03is crazy the level of coincidence here.
- 21:06But nonetheless, Jesse's like, "Bill,
- 21:08pull over. We we got to make sure
- 21:09Clayton's okay here." Assuming this is
- 21:12him. And so Bill, you know, he pulls
- 21:14over, they get out and they walk up to
- 21:16this truck, which as they get closer,
- 21:18they can see it. It's really quite
- 21:19mangled. And they see the license plate
- 21:22is Clayton's license plate. They
- 21:24remembered it. So this is definitely his
- 21:26truck. Again, it's like, what's going on
- 21:28here? But there's nobody there. Like
- 21:30Clayton's not there. There's no people
- 21:32anywhere. It's just this this abandoned
- 21:34wrecked truck on the side of the road.
- 21:37And so Jesse and Bill, they're like,
- 21:39"What do we even do? like we think this
- 21:41has got to be Clayton, you know, is he
- 21:43okay? How do we even find him again? And
- 21:46so they they walk up to the truck and
- 21:48they start inspecting it and it's
- 21:51definitely been in an accident. But but
- 21:52worse is they look in the window and
- 21:55they see on the driver's seat are all
- 21:57these dark stains on the seat that look
- 22:00like they could have been dried blood.
- 22:03And so now, you know, Jesse and Bill are
- 22:05like, "Really? What do we do here? Like
- 22:07is he nearby? Is he hurt or something?"
- 22:10and they looked around and they noticed
- 22:11there was a farmhouse on a hill right
- 22:13nearby sort of off the side of the
- 22:15highway. And they were like, "Let's just
- 22:17walk up there and just ask them like,
- 22:19"What's going on with this truck? They
- 22:20must know something." And so Bill
- 22:22agreed. And the two of them, they walked
- 22:25farther away from the highway up this
- 22:26hill to this house and they knocked on
- 22:29the front door. And then a moment later,
- 22:31this old man answered and Jesse, who you
- 22:34know, understandably was pretty upset,
- 22:36she said, "Hey, like what's going on
- 22:37with that truck down there? We're pretty
- 22:39sure we know who it belongs to, but you
- 22:41know, he's not here. We We think there's
- 22:43blood inside. [music] Like, can you tell
- 22:45us anything about that truck? Like, what
- 22:46happened? And the man, he's looking at
- 22:48Jesse and Bill and he's sort of
- 22:50confused. Like, who are you people?
- 22:51Like, what's going on here? But he could
- 22:53see that Jesse and Bill were genuinely
- 22:55concerned here. And so, he just said,
- 22:57"Yeah, there was a horrible accident.
- 23:00There was a a semi that that smashed
- 23:03into this truck in the middle of the
- 23:04night and the driver was really badly
- 23:07hurt." And so they rushed him to the
- 23:09hospital and on the way to the hospital
- 23:11the guy was saying that he was on his
- 23:13way home to Tennessee to to go back to
- 23:15his wife and his baby but you know he
- 23:18died on the way to the hospital and they
- 23:21never actually identified him and his
- 23:23body was never claimed. So it's just a
- 23:26it's a horrible tragedy. Now when Jesse
- 23:29and Bill heard this, I mean they looked
- 23:30at each other in total disbelief because
- 23:32[music] the description they just got
- 23:34definitely sounded like Clayton. like
- 23:37they knew who this guy was. It was
- 23:38Clayton. It had to be. And so Jesse told
- 23:41the farmer that actually she does know
- 23:43who he is and she'd like to identify
- 23:45him. She'd like to be the person who's
- 23:47able to help get his family closure. The
- 23:50guy's name was Clayton and they had
- 23:51helped him, you know, just last month
- 23:53fix his engine. He had stopped on the
- 23:55side of the road and they had helped
- 23:56him. And so they just wanted to to
- 23:58figure out a way to pass that
- 23:59information along. Now, as they were
- 24:01saying this to the old man, the old man,
- 24:03he had this this strange look come over
- 24:05[music] his face, like he didn't really
- 24:07understand what they were even saying.
- 24:09And then when they stopped speaking and
- 24:10they were waiting for the old man to
- 24:12provide some guidance here, [music] he
- 24:14just looked at Jesse and said, "You've
- 24:16got to be mistaken."
- 24:18And Jesse's like, "No, no, we we
- 24:20definitely feel like this has got to be
- 24:22Clayton. The story it completely lines
- 24:24up. We even know that that's the right
- 24:25license plate on the truck down there."
- 24:28But the old man's like, "Okay, but no,
- 24:32you have to be mistaken because the
- 24:34crash I'm talking about that killed this
- 24:36guy, it happened 10 [music] years ago.
- 24:39That truck has been sitting there for 10
- 24:42years now." When Jesse and Bill heard
- 24:44this, like their whole worldview
- 24:46suddenly shattered, right? Because they
- 24:48had this visceral, real, in some ways
- 24:51multiple interactions with Clayton. If
- 24:53you include Jesse's sighting of Clayton,
- 24:56you know, a few hours after they got
- 24:57home, like they they interacted with
- 24:59him, they saw him, they talked to him,
- 25:01they spent time with him, and it wasn't
- 25:0210 years ago, it was a month ago. And so
- 25:05for them, they they can't believe it.
- 25:07They're they don't even know how to
- 25:08process this. But it gets weirder
- 25:10because Jesse and Bill are not the only
- 25:13people who have reported seeing Clayton
- 25:16after his death. At least three other
- 25:19people have reported physically seeing
- 25:21Clayton, specifically at the Hollywood
- 25:24Motel, always on the anniversary of
- 25:26[music] his death.
- 25:35>> [music]
- 25:40>> One winter morning in 1963, a 7-year-old
- 25:44boy named Keith Field stood on the side
- 25:46of a snowy, foggy road in South London,
- 25:49holding a snowball in one hand and a lit
- 25:52sparkler in the other. So Keith was
- 25:54about to start playing a game that he
- 25:55and his friends had invented. And the
- 25:57way it worked is [music] the friend
- 25:59group would split in half and some of
- 26:01the kids would go on one side of the
- 26:02road, the other half would go on the
- 26:04other, and they all would light
- 26:06sparklers, and they all would grab
- 26:08snowballs. And they would keep throwing
- 26:10snowballs back and forth across the road
- 26:12trying to hit all the sparklers until
- 26:15one side's row of sparklers, till one
- 26:17team's sparklers had all been
- 26:20extinguished by the snowballs. However,
- 26:22today the game was going to be
- 26:24especially challenging because it was
- 26:28really really foggy out. Like you could
- 26:30barely see, you know, a few feet in
- 26:31front of you, but at a distance you
- 26:33could definitely make out like a
- 26:35sparkler. So, they thought it would be
- 26:37fun to try to play this game in the fog.
- 26:39And so, Keith and his friends are all
- 26:40ready. They're they're lined up on, you
- 26:42know, respective sides of the road. And
- 26:44even though they can't really see each
- 26:45other, they can just see those
- 26:46sparklers. At some point, one of Keith's
- 26:49friends on the other side called out
- 26:51that the game had begun. And like right
- 26:54away, all the kids are lobbing snowballs
- 26:57back and forth across the road. And one
- 26:59by one, sparklers are getting
- 27:00extinguished. And you know, Keith, he's
- 27:02he's narrowly dodging the the snowballs
- 27:04coming in, which you really can't see
- 27:06until the last second. So, it's just
- 27:07kind of luck. And then at some point,
- 27:09even though he was doing his best, a
- 27:11snowball hit a sparkler and it was
- 27:13extinguished.
- 27:14>> [music]
- 27:14>> Now, Keith knew that for this particular
- 27:16round of their game, he was out and
- 27:19basically he would have to wait [music]
- 27:20until, you know, one side fully won, but
- 27:23he knew that they were going to play
- 27:25again. And so, he would need another
- 27:26sparkler and the sparklers, the unused
- 27:29sparklers were on the other side of the
- 27:31road in a box. And so, Keith just
- 27:34decided he would go across the road and
- 27:36grab a sparkler to be ready for the next
- 27:38round. And so Keith, the seven-year-old
- 27:41boy, begins to cross the street, and
- 27:44it's a short distance, but remember,
- 27:46it's very foggy. He's he's making his
- 27:48way and he gets about halfway when out
- 27:51of the corner of his eye, he sees light
- 27:54and he turns and it's basically too late
- 27:57at this point, but he sees two
- 27:59headlights of a car bearing down on him.
- 28:01Clearly, they they [music] can't see
- 28:03him. It's too foggy. He's got nowhere to
- 28:05go. And he braced for [music] impact.
- 28:08However, what happened next defies
- 28:12explanation. So, there were quite a few
- 28:14witnesses to what happened next. There
- 28:16were the other kids playing the game
- 28:18with Keith who were standing on either
- 28:20side of the [music] road who even though
- 28:21it was foggy, they could see the car
- 28:23approaching. They could hear Keith
- 28:25screaming out as the car approached.
- 28:27They were screaming out to get him out
- 28:28of the road like they're seeing this
- 28:30happen in real time despite the fog. And
- 28:33then there were also three other people
- 28:34who were not actually playing the game,
- 28:36but who were in the area that also were
- 28:39witnesses and gave statements about what
- 28:41they saw. And what they witnessed is
- 28:44this car. It's coming through the fog
- 28:46right down the middle of the road at
- 28:47about 40 mph. The driver has not seen
- 28:50Keith. Keith can't get out of the way.
- 28:52And right before the car hits Keith, it
- 28:55stops on a dime. And the driver of that
- 28:57car dies. Like instantly this happens.
- 29:01And so Keith, he's he's standing there
- 29:02after the car has come to a stop and
- 29:04he's looking around like, "What even
- 29:06happened?" Like nobody even heard the
- 29:07screeching of the car. The car just just
- 29:09stopped. And then people swarm the car
- 29:12and they [music] find the drivers
- 29:14slumped over in the car. Like no one
- 29:16could understand what had even happened.
- 29:17And this [music] the Scotland Yard, they
- 29:19come out and they're doing an
- 29:20investigation and and they can't really
- 29:22understand it. They do an autopsy on the
- 29:24driver. There was no clear cause of
- 29:27death. The person was was healthy. There
- 29:29was no underlying health issues. They
- 29:31just suddenly stopped living. The car,
- 29:34it couldn't have stopped based on how
- 29:35fast it was going. And also, amazingly,
- 29:38the speedometer was frozen at 40 mph,
- 29:41which is presumed to be how fast it was
- 29:43going at the time it stopped and didn't
- 29:46hit Keith. So, it's going, you know, 40
- 29:48plus miles an hour and stops on a dime.
- 29:51Like, that didn't seem possible. And so
- 29:54people, you know, they couldn't decide
- 29:55if this was a miracle or a tragedy
- 29:57because, you know, Keith almost
- 29:58certainly would have been killed. So he
- 30:00lives, but the the driver dies. It was
- 30:03just this freak thing that no one really
- 30:04knew what to make of. [music] However,
- 30:07years later, Keith would ultimately
- 30:09write an article about his experience,
- 30:11like almost getting hit by this [music]
- 30:13car. and he would finally document the
- 30:16very strange thing that he personally
- 30:19experienced at the moment when that car
- 30:22was about to strike him. Something to
- 30:23that point he had never shared with
- 30:26anyone. Keith said that as he crossed
- 30:29the road on the day that you know this
- 30:31whole thing happened, he got about
- 30:32halfway when he noticed out of the
- 30:34corner of his eye some light bearing
- 30:36down on him. and he turns and [music] he
- 30:38sees the headlights of this car and he
- 30:40knows immediately that the car the
- 30:42driver doesn't see him. They're going
- 30:44too fast. He's not going to be able to
- 30:46get out of the way. He's about to get
- 30:48hit. Very likely he's about to die. And
- 30:50like time slowed down and he's he's
- 30:53bracing for impact as this car is
- 30:54[music] going to end his life. And so in
- 30:57that moment when time stood still, Keith
- 30:59said that he suddenly began to feel like
- 31:01the air around him, like all that fog
- 31:04all around him was suddenly being sucked
- 31:07into his body. Like his body was like
- 31:09eating up all the air all around him.
- 31:12This is again happening in like a
- 31:13fraction of a second. And then out of
- 31:15his body came this light, this blue
- 31:18light that was almost like the the
- 31:20filtration of the air going through him.
- 31:22that's coming out of him. Like this life
- 31:24force, this blue air, this blue fog
- 31:27comes out of him. And Keith would say
- 31:29that the blue light turned and shot at
- 31:34the car. And the second it made contact
- 31:36with the car, the car stopped, the
- 31:38driver slumped over and died. And then
- 31:40the blue light, the blue air, whatever
- 31:42it was, just [music] vanished. To this
- 31:45day, they still don't even know how that
- 31:47car stopped how it did or how that guy
- 31:50died. And so as crazy as it is that he's
- 31:52describing this blue light being
- 31:53responsible, there is no alternative
- 31:56explanation. Now, as a 7-year-old boy
- 31:59who's now somehow or another, you know,
- 32:01because of this light or not, survived a
- 32:04near-death experience here, cuz he
- 32:06should have been hit by that car. He
- 32:07should have died. Keith did not come out
- 32:09of that experience thinking, "Boy, I
- 32:12better investigate that weird sensation
- 32:14of thinking I'm seeing a blue light that
- 32:16somehow did this and tell everyone."
- 32:18Like, he's a seven-year-old. He can
- 32:19barely articulate what's even happened
- 32:21[music] in real time, let alone this
- 32:23bizarre blue light thing. And so he just
- 32:25kept it to himself. And he also, again,
- 32:27he felt so guilty, however this
- 32:30happened, that somehow he had been
- 32:32spared and the driver had not. And so he
- 32:34just felt like bad talking about this
- 32:37blue thing. However, as Keith grew up,
- 32:40he thought more and more about what
- 32:42happened to him. And he he tried to find
- 32:44meaning in in what happened. like what
- 32:46was this blue light that he has come to
- 32:49believe saved his life and ended that
- 32:52driver's life? Like is this
- 32:54representative of some like protector in
- 32:56my life? Like is there something blue in
- 32:59my life that you know in some way,
- 33:01shape, or form is connected [music] to
- 33:03protecting me? And he's like thinking
- 33:05about all these crazy things that could
- 33:06connect all this together.
- 33:08But he has no idea. He just feels bad
- 33:11that he lived and the driver died and
- 33:14somehow this blue light was a part of
- 33:16it. At least that's his perspective. Now
- 33:18whether or not Keith's story is true
- 33:19about the light, we don't know. But what
- 33:21we do know is that a car was traveling
- 33:24really fast down the road, like at least
- 33:26at 40 mph, and it came to a stop within
- 33:29an inch of the boy, and it stopped
- 33:32faster and more efficiently than the car
- 33:34was designed to be able to do. So it it
- 33:37comes to this impossible stop and at the
- 33:40exact same moment the driver dies and we
- 33:43have no idea how they died, what caused
- 33:45them to die, but they die at the exact
- 33:47same second and there's like a dozen
- 33:50witnesses to this thing happening.
- 33:52That's what we do know. But why that
- 33:55happened, how it happened, whether the
- 33:57the blue light was involved, we may
- 34:00never know.
- 34:11Thank you so much for watching. Let me
- 34:13know what you thought of today's episode
- 34:15in the comments. And remember, we have
- 34:17hundreds of videos for you to binge
- 34:19right now. But if you're looking for a
- 34:21recommendation from me of that one video
- 34:24that's worth your time, well, it's this
- 34:26one right here. So, give it a watch. All
- 34:28right, until next time. See you.
