  30. 1:03evening to present rewilding the sky
  31. 1:06this is the first time we've been able
  32. 1:08to welcome a dean's lecture series
  33. 1:10guests in person for quite a long time
  34. 1:13so we're thrilled to have such an
  35. 1:15exciting practice here with us tonight
  36. 1:18malaysian born huayan founded salad
  37. 1:21dressing in 2002 when he was 23 and
  38. 1:24since then it's grown to around 25
  39. 1:26people with the director of design
  40. 1:29juhan
  41. 1:30joining the practice in 2010
  42. 1:33huayian and his colleagues have shaped a
  43. 1:36unique design studio which merges
  44. 1:38philosophical explorations time meaning
  45. 1:41and the natural world with the business
  46. 1:43demands of a contemporary landscape
  47. 1:45practice
  48. 1:47salad dressings projects can be found
  49. 1:49across singapore malaysia indonesia and
  50. 1:52most recently dubai in the award-winning
  51. 1:55singapore pavilion in collaboration with
  52. 1:57wohar at world expo 2020
  53. 2:00their practice includes landscape
  54. 2:02designers gardeners and architects who
  55. 2:04work together to constantly challenge
  56. 2:06the boundaries of designed landscapes
  57. 2:09based on biodiversity the immateriality
  58. 2:12of nature and its timeless relationship
  59. 2:14with humans
  60. 2:16incorporating local culture and nature
  61. 2:18is a priority for the firm and their
  62. 2:20projects find unique ways of exploring
  63. 2:23how nature and humans can coexist
  64. 2:27influenced by the japanese firms super
  65. 2:29potato and the uk graphics design
  66. 2:32group tomato
  67. 2:33this firm's unusual name is a literal
  68. 2:36reference to landscape architecture's
  69. 2:37practice of dressing up the green
  70. 2:40but as you will hear tonight this
  71. 2:41practice is anything but literal
  72. 2:44i'm very much looking forward to hearing
  73. 2:46more about the design philosophy and
  74. 2:48their inspiring projects this evening
  75. 2:50please join with me in welcoming salad
  76. 2:53dressing landscape founding director
  77. 2:55huayn and director of design you harm to
  78. 2:57the stage

  81. 3:04[Applause]
  82. 3:09good evening everyone
  83. 3:11thank you julie for the lovely
  84. 3:13introductions
  85. 3:14i'm very honored to be here today with
  86. 3:16um huayian
  87. 3:18let me start with a brief background of
  88. 3:20salad dressing
  89. 3:22this is our office located atop of a
  90. 3:24former horse raising compound at the
  91. 3:26foothill of random pristine rainforests
  92. 3:28of singapore
  93. 3:31we have a sky forest where we collected
  94. 3:33over 400 species of plants to test out
  95. 3:36the rooftop conditions
  96. 3:38in a garden we released native animals
  97. 3:41like stick insects tree frogs and
  98. 3:44morning lizards occasionally
  99. 3:47badness will be found or some monkeys
  100. 3:50and home bills to the respite from
  101. 3:54in our air conditioned office we have a
  102. 3:56few closed water ecosystem under our
  103. 3:59observation too
  104. 4:02we study singapore native fish in
  105. 4:04different habitats and water strata
  106. 4:08let's zoom out a bit we are from
  107. 4:10singapore
  108. 4:11a city in nature is the recent model of
  109. 4:13the country
  110. 4:15since the 1960s singapore has branded
  111. 4:18herself as a garden city
  112. 4:20as a clean and green environment to
  113. 4:22mitigate the harsh concrete urban
  114. 4:24environment
  115. 4:26the green plant then evolved into city
  116. 4:28in the gardens which focuses on
  117. 4:31conserving biodiversity and engaging the
  118. 4:33community
  119. 4:36today singapore is one of the greenest
  120. 4:39cities in the world
  121. 4:41the effort of reintroducing wildlife is
  122. 4:43getting its fruit
  123. 4:45the city nature vision is about bringing
  124. 4:48people closer to nature
  125. 4:50safeguarding the nature reserve and
  126. 4:52providing more habitats for singapore's
  127. 4:55flora and fauna
  128. 4:57the concept for lack of connection with
  129. 4:59the rest of nature outside of us is that
  130. 5:03a stronger disregard for other plants
  131. 5:05animals and less appealing wild areas
  132. 5:08could lead to further ecosystem
  133. 5:10degradation
  134. 5:11and species laws
  135. 5:14therefore re-establishing a connection
  136. 5:16with nature has become more and more
  137. 5:18important in the field of city planning
  138. 5:23as cityscape grow not only horizontally
  139. 5:26but vertically in order to accommodate
  140. 5:29the demands of increasing
  141. 5:32population density the vertical green
  142. 5:34has becoming a significant strategy of
  143. 5:38urban sustainable development
  144. 5:41the city of singapore aims to become a
  145. 5:43capital city for vertical green
  146. 5:46the target is to have at least 80
  147. 5:48percent of buildings by floor area in
  148. 5:51singapore to be greenpie 2013.
  149. 5:56these are a few examples of singapore's
  150. 5:58green buildings journey
  151. 6:02kenyan of malaysia has materialized
  152. 6:05greening futuristic high rise with
  153. 6:07technological rationality for
  154. 6:10climatic issues
  155. 6:13animal crossing in 2013 expressed the
  156. 6:16co-existence of other animals in the
  157. 6:18city
  158. 6:20gambong emirati brings green into
  159. 6:22different flaws for the community
  160. 6:25and the recent airport jewels contained
  161. 6:28a forest within
  162. 6:31with kanalama by jeffy as the president
  163. 6:34green buildings in the tropics
  164. 6:36we understand that a building can
  165. 6:38shelter beyond human beings
  166. 6:42during the pandemic period we started to
  167. 6:45notice our affinity towards nature
  168. 6:48edward o wilson biophilia notions of our
  169. 6:51ignorant love and phobia for living
  170. 6:54things is magnifying our biological
  171. 6:57relationship with nature
  172. 6:59our natural love for life helps sustain
  173. 7:02life
  174. 7:04can we share and rewire a building up to
  175. 7:07the sky
  176. 7:09we dream of a vertical landscape as an
  177. 7:11art to bring diverse habitats and
  178. 7:13various ecosystem outwards with
  179. 7:16technologies and calculations
  180. 7:18microclimates could assist fluoride and
  181. 7:20fauna to happen in the sky
  182. 7:24and in a close proximity in our daily
  183. 7:27life this is taken from my house and
  184. 7:30what we need to do is to learn to
  185. 7:32coexist with other living beings
  186. 7:38[Music]
  187. 7:50cool
  188. 7:53[Music]
  189. 8:00so yeah this is our talk about rewinding
  190. 8:05ever since our ancestor learned how to
  191. 8:07control fire we had drawn a clear line
  192. 8:10from
  193. 8:10nature in the 1960s racial carson
  194. 8:14silent spring awaits people's
  195. 8:16understanding over the poisons on land
  196. 8:19from the left-over weapons from world
  197. 8:21war ii
  198. 8:22but stopped shopping keep stopped
  199. 8:24running outdoors our lens is
  200. 8:26deproporated
  201. 8:29we are now in the era of ant proportions
  202. 8:32the six mass extinctions is on the verge
  203. 8:35this round is not caused by an asteroid
  204. 8:38or huge volcano eruptions or natural
  205. 8:41change in atmospheres components it is
  206. 8:44caused by the single species on the
  207. 8:46earth the eight billions of us
  208. 8:50environmental crisis can be broken down
  209. 8:52to climatic breakdown and ecological
  210. 8:55breakdown
  211. 8:57today we are both ecologically bought
  212. 8:59and anxious over the climatic issues and
  213. 9:02we can only find the imagination in
  214. 9:04sci-fi movie one last man a dog guns
  215. 9:08truck fighting another human beings
  216. 9:12is there still hope can rewilding put us
  217. 9:15back to nature
  218. 9:17according to sir that we had the bro
  219. 9:19inner
  220. 9:20conversations with team flannery
  221. 9:23there was a time in the 19th century
  222. 9:25when it was perfectly acceptable for
  223. 9:27civilized human beings to think that it
  224. 9:29was morally acceptable to actually own
  225. 9:32another human beings for a slave
  226. 9:35and somehow or other in a space or 20 or
  227. 9:3830 years the public perceptions of that
  228. 9:40totally transform
  229. 9:43a change in bioethic is calling for us
  230. 9:46to re-value our relationship with nature
  231. 9:50the flip side of globalization is that
  232. 9:52it is also creating opportunities to
  233. 9:54upgrade ecosystem at scale
  234. 9:58large skill land abundant and rural
  235. 10:01depopulation in some areas of europe
  236. 10:03represents a chance to rebuild europe
  237. 10:06lost mega herbivores wood pasture system
  238. 10:09and regenerate new nature-based economic
  239. 10:12prospects for these regions
  240. 10:16the words rewilding was then introduced
  241. 10:19and popularized by george monbiot in
  242. 10:212013
  243. 10:23a british writer known for his
  244. 10:25environmental and political activism
  245. 10:28he quotes rewilding has no end points no
  246. 10:32view about what is the right ecosystem
  247. 10:34or a right assemblage of a species looks
  248. 10:36like
  249. 10:37it does not strive to produce a heap of
  250. 10:40metal a rainforest a cup garden or a
  251. 10:43coral reef
  252. 10:44it lets nature to decide
  253. 10:46the way the ecosystem evolves cannot be
  254. 10:49predicted
  255. 10:50while conservation often looks to the
  256. 10:52past rewilding looks to the future
  257. 10:56according to him there are two
  258. 10:58definitions of rewilding
  259. 11:00one is the mass restoration of ecosystem
  260. 11:03this is to restore to the greatest
  261. 11:05extent possible ecological interactions
  262. 11:09look at the most successful example in
  263. 11:12uk vivo a keystone species in the river
  264. 11:15ecosystem that took 20 years and many
  265. 11:17attempts to reintroduce
  266. 11:19not only the beaver dams contributes to
  267. 11:21the flow of water
  268. 11:23in the streams and forming ponds and
  269. 11:25wetlands
  270. 11:26they cut the trees allow sunlight to
  271. 11:28penetrate to the forest floor and
  272. 11:30encourage new life
  273. 11:32the felt trees further provide habitats
  274. 11:34for fungi insects
  275. 11:37woodpeckers and salmons and many other
  276. 11:39species
  277. 11:40it is an ecosystem contained in animals
  278. 11:46in one night on churchill island one
  279. 11:48bandicoot can make 41 barrels in an hour
  280. 11:52their barrels improve soil health
  281. 11:54increase soy moisture and nutrients
  282. 11:56content
  283. 11:58and decreased soil compactions and
  284. 12:00erosion
  285. 12:02the diggins also spread fungi and
  286. 12:04provide habitats for invertebrates and
  287. 12:07improve seed germinations they too
  288. 12:09contain an ecosystem within
  289. 12:14the other definition of rewarding that
  290. 12:15george monbiot expresses is rewarding
  291. 12:18our own life in other words rewilding
  292. 12:21our mind
  293. 12:23to be able to accept living together
  294. 12:24with other living beings a change in
  295. 12:27bioetic dissolving as much hierarchical
  296. 12:29biases as possible
  297. 12:33in march 2017 the wanganoi river by
  298. 12:36maori in new zealand was the first river
  299. 12:39to officially receive the status as a
  300. 12:41legal person
  301. 12:43now the river can protect itself with
  302. 12:45law
  303. 12:46this legislation recognizes the deep
  304. 12:48spiritual connection between the
  305. 12:50wanganoi iwi and its ancestral rival
  306. 12:53it aims to reveal a single living beings
  307. 12:56from a mountain to the sea incorporating
  308. 12:59its tributaries and all its physical and
  309. 13:01metaphysical elements
  310. 13:04well earlier in 1982 franklin dam
  311. 13:07actions lead to
  312. 13:09a greater
  313. 13:10awareness of environmental issues
  314. 13:13wilderness photographer peter
  315. 13:16dombroski photographed the cambridge
  316. 13:19identity and inspired many to protect
  317. 13:21the
  318. 13:21green rivers in tasmania
  319. 13:26throughout the years seller dressing has
  320. 13:28been pondering about the term rewilding
  321. 13:31the veteran man is vanquished with a
  322. 13:34paralympic athlete assisted by
  323. 13:36prosthetic runs faster than an olympic
  324. 13:39athlete
  325. 13:40i realize that rewilding also includes
  326. 13:43social inequalities bi-nationality
  327. 13:46race gentle class and sexuality
  328. 13:50i'm naturally happy to be here today as
  329. 13:53an asian female landscape architect
  330. 13:56thank you jillian for the opportunity
  331. 13:59these are some of the female writers
  332. 14:01designers bio artists that i like
  333. 14:04and who have influence influenced me and
  334. 14:06guiding me along
  335. 14:08especially the recent bioartists who are
  336. 14:10courageous to express the change in
  337. 14:12bioethic with their body and dna
  338. 14:17in our career we are often asked about
  339. 14:19the benefit of rewilding
  340. 14:21even after explaining about bio failure
  341. 14:24and the importance of ecology
  342. 14:26the transitions of entroposing into the
  343. 14:29future still confuses majority of people
  344. 14:34let me introduce masanobu fukuoka's
  345. 14:36one-show revolution theory
  346. 14:39fukuoka-san was a japanese pharma and
  347. 14:42philosopher
  348. 14:43celebrated for his natural farming and
  349. 14:45re-vegetations of desert defied lands
  350. 14:48fukuoka called his agriculture
  351. 14:51a philosophy she then no ho most
  352. 14:54commonly translated into english as
  353. 14:56natural farming or do nothing farming
  354. 15:00this is kind of working with animals and
  355. 15:02plants example
  356. 15:04bats are
  357. 15:05one of the biggest transfer of energy
  358. 15:07animals like bats are great pest
  359. 15:09controller
  360. 15:10guano as nutrients hot spots has created
  361. 15:13an unique carbon ecosystem for many
  362. 15:16trochotypes
  363. 15:17animals are giant mobile's nutrients
  364. 15:19linked
  365. 15:21we know that mangrove can reduce
  366. 15:23destruction of tsunami mangrove can also
  367. 15:26use as a natural base solution to
  368. 15:28resolve sea level rise in singapore
  369. 15:31despite being a well-to-do country
  370. 15:33she couldn't afford to build diets and
  371. 15:35poulders to prevent sea level rising all
  372. 15:37around the island
  373. 15:39mangrove trees are invited on the north
  374. 15:41shore for a creation to happen
  375. 15:48even though the selfish values of ours
  376. 15:51are the one that created the current
  377. 15:52wrath of for self-annihilations and
  378. 15:54destructions of our home we can still
  379. 15:57call upon
  380. 15:58other beings to be our alliance
  381. 16:02cooperate with our cousins and relatives
  382. 16:05that have evolved together with us
  383. 16:07through deep time to heal this wound and
  384. 16:09not just again depending on our
  385. 16:12eco-centric values to resolve
  386. 16:16i will now show some example of how
  387. 16:18salad has been fitting into the notion
  388. 16:20of
  389. 16:20rewilding
  390. 16:22we are currently working as
  391. 16:25working with enterprise singapore to
  392. 16:26promote rebuilding as a landscape
  393. 16:28architect we are not only looking by
  394. 16:31looking at hybridizing or decorating
  395. 16:33greeneries with buildings
  396. 16:35rewilding is our belief of human is not
  397. 16:38the final form in evolution
  398. 16:41we aim at creating a natural succession
  399. 16:43process through introducing native
  400. 16:45species enhancing habitats diversifying
  401. 16:49and complexifying sustainable ecosystems
  402. 16:51into both wow and urban nature
  403. 16:55today with a system from machines we are
  404. 16:57no longer handicapped with data
  405. 17:00we could translate the senses of other
  406. 17:01beings into digital and open new windows
  407. 17:04to the world through
  408. 17:06other beings
  409. 17:09in the world expo 2021 dubai we curated
  410. 17:12the singapore pavilion with oaha
  411. 17:14architects that's my baby
  412. 17:16waha is a singapore-based practice who
  413. 17:18focuses on conceiving integrated
  414. 17:20architectural and urban solutions to
  415. 17:23tackle the problems of 21st century such
  416. 17:25as climate change populations growth and
  417. 17:28rapidly increa increasing urbanization
  418. 17:33the pavilion is designed with three corn
  419. 17:35shaped steel structures cladded with
  420. 17:37greens fusing abstract geometries among

  426. 17:52the pavilion can be seen as a
  427. 17:53super-organism sharing resources among
  428. 17:56plants humans and digital
  429. 17:58beings team nature nurture and future
  430. 18:02the pavilion is a demonstration of a
  431. 18:04resilient and livable city for the
  432. 18:06future
  433. 18:08while oahu is focusing on climatic issue
  434. 18:11we are focusing on ecological issues and
  435. 18:13bringing the notion of rewilding into
  436. 18:15the world expo
  437. 18:21seller dressing features singapore's
  438. 18:22rich biodiversified natural heritage

  444. 18:38with saplings of titural cups
  445. 18:41for the native plants thrive a
  446. 18:43microclimate with a precise temperature
  447. 18:45humidity and irrigations was designed
  448. 18:51eighty percent of rainforest in
  449. 18:52singapore is matter of the
  450. 18:54thorocarpassia family
  451. 18:56the effort of reintroducing these native
  452. 18:59giants can be seen increasingly
  453. 19:01in singapore streetscape
  454. 19:03that mark a change in selecting plants
  455. 19:05beyond aesthetic and maintenance
  456. 19:07considerations
  457. 19:13four terrariums were designed to suspend
  458. 19:15in a room filled with hybrid orchids
  459. 19:18each contains a native species that
  460. 19:20represents the four significant habitats
  461. 19:23of singapore
  462. 19:24low rain rainforest
  463. 19:26freshwater swamp forest main group and
  464. 19:29the city itself
  465. 19:34unlike those showy hybridized orchids at
  466. 19:36the surrounding garland these navy
  467. 19:38orchids need a specific environment to
  468. 19:41grow
  469. 19:42with the habitat loss these orbits are
  470. 19:44facing extinction too
  471. 19:47the installation showcases how
  472. 19:49technology can assist in conservation
  473. 19:52the orbit the orbital structures are in
  474. 19:54the process of producing more native
  475. 19:56orchids to be rewired into singapore
  476. 20:03we also designed three robots to climb
  477. 20:05around the vertical topography of the in
  478. 20:07the pavilion
  479. 20:09they are also the embassadors of plants
  480. 20:11to convey the mixed emotion of the
  481. 20:13plants to the visitors
  482. 20:23the robot devotedly learned from a
  483. 20:25collector data or nurturing plant
  484. 20:27throughout the six months event
  485. 20:37cellular dressing sees robots not as
  486. 20:39polarized in accordance with human needs
  487. 20:42but more of the possibilities to be a
  488. 20:44catalyst for us to know our plants and
  489. 20:47our ecology better
  490. 20:50our generative and interactive design of
  491. 20:53art and game is premised on the idea
  492. 20:55that we are participants in our
  493. 20:57environment and that rewilding requires
  494. 21:00individuals actions and collective
  495. 21:03efforts
  496. 21:07they reflect a future in which machines
  497. 21:09humans and nature in enabling each other
  498. 21:13coexist and core evolve
  499. 21:15the game interacts with visitors and
  500. 21:17eventually triggers a data-driven
  501. 21:20digital art piece that is related to
  502. 21:22global warming ecological consciousness
  503. 21:25and sensing beyond our biological
  504. 21:28limitation through machines
  505. 21:30this is the game board that salad
  506. 21:32dressing designed we drew quite a lot
  507. 21:34during the pandemic
  508. 21:40i will show the three videos in the end
  509. 21:43of our talk
  510. 21:47we developed a few indexes for us to
  511. 21:50value our biological rich endowments in
  512. 21:52our projects
  513. 21:53this includes
  514. 21:55creating imaginable features
  515. 21:57introducing native flora and fauna water
  516. 22:00ecosystem creating new habitats
  517. 22:03carbon sequestration contributions
  518. 22:06passive rewarding for natural star
  519. 22:07sessions and of course today's
  520. 22:10technology you are going to see this
  521. 22:12evaluation in text appearing next to the
  522. 22:15images of our projects that i'm going to
  523. 22:17illustrate
  524. 22:23back to singapore the voice mentioned is
  525. 22:25our first condominium project that
  526. 22:27accepts the concept of rebuilding
  527. 22:30the rooftop spaces are not planted for
  528. 22:32humans comfort but also for habitat
  529. 22:35a forested area is cordoned off on the
  530. 22:38rooftop to allow natural successions to
  531. 22:40happen
  532. 22:41and self-evolving with fauna they are
  533. 22:43released on the rooftop
  534. 22:46technology like sensor animal track
  535. 22:48cameras are proposed to be the catalyst
  536. 22:50between nature and the residents
  537. 22:53that also helps to reduce the
  538. 22:54maintenance frequency
  539. 22:56we propose to have an ecologist as part
  540. 22:59of the maintenance team once a month to
  541. 23:02observe the succession of the ecosystem
  542. 23:05it was rather tough to persuade the
  543. 23:07clients to sacrifice a piece of rooftop
  544. 23:09for the pure nature
  545. 23:11on the other hand we are pleased to know
  546. 23:13that to further
  547. 23:15protect its wildlife even after the
  548. 23:17pandemic thailand is now planning to
  549. 23:20close all of its national parks for
  550. 23:22two to three months a year
  551. 23:27we are not only doing this for luxurious
  552. 23:29projects in singapore public housing
  553. 23:31heartland red hue we pan down our first
  554. 23:34attempt on rebuilding water
  555. 23:38the project includes the curation of of
  556. 23:40a forest garden featuring an extensive
  557. 23:45non-mechanical filtration water system
  558. 23:47that uses plant phytoremediation
  559. 23:50water becomes the catalyst in sustaining
  560. 23:52the landscape
  561. 23:54we introduced 80 percent of native
  562. 23:56species into the project the core
  563. 23:59principle was to design for natural
  564. 24:01successions to take place allowing
  565. 24:03native to slowly become themselves
  566. 24:05[Music]
  567. 24:07plants would
  568. 24:09merger evolve adapt
  569. 24:11or be replaced it is a cycle that should
  570. 24:14require minimum human interventions to
  571. 24:17sustain
  572. 24:19it is an ongoing experimental project
  573. 24:21one that allows us to study and add new
  574. 24:24ecological elements
  575. 24:26the attempt of rewinding water also
  576. 24:28includes the reintroductions of native
  577. 24:30fish and underwater aquatic plants
  578. 24:34the trees around the bio ponds will trap
  579. 24:36the moisture in the air and create a
  580. 24:38microclimate that help plants to grow in
  581. 24:40the garden
  582. 24:41leaf litters from the trees are part of
  583. 24:43the system they are the fertilizer for
  584. 24:46the plants
  585. 24:51palm civ occasionally visit the site it
  586. 24:53has become a niche for wildlife but also
  587. 24:56for humans
  588. 24:57we have promoted interaction with the
  589. 24:59fluoride and fauna which creates a
  590. 25:01biophilic environment but here you see
  591. 25:04they get used to each other
  592. 25:08what is really not such an easy process
  593. 25:11is the introduction of native fish into
  594. 25:13these ponds
  595. 25:14it is a constant battle
  596. 25:16we remove the unwanted pet's light
  597. 25:19like ear terrapins from the ponds
  598. 25:21constantly
  599. 25:22asian tends to think that releasing
  600. 25:24living things after irresponsible buying
  601. 25:27is a form of good karma
  602. 25:31the native lodges bobs and even the
  603. 25:34strong survivor snake head finds it
  604. 25:36difficult to compete with the aliens of
  605. 25:39african chiles
  606. 25:40apparently some chinese can decipher
  607. 25:43winning lottery number from the body
  608. 25:44patterns of the chiles
  609. 25:50these authors are rewired in the city
  610. 25:52and have been naughtily exploiting
  611. 25:54fishponds around the singapore
  612. 25:57these fish that killed by altar are
  613. 25:58african chiles the released by the
  614. 26:00residents
  615. 26:02here we saw an opportunity to rewire the
  616. 26:05concrete city and also to rewire our
  617. 26:07acceptance of the undomesticated
  618. 26:11it is a process for change in the human
  619. 26:13heart to rediscover our attachment to
  620. 26:16the wild flora and fauna
  621. 26:18by bringing the forest closer into our
  622. 26:20neighborhood
  623. 26:24we want a master plan competition to
  624. 26:26revitalize the pangsuo railway corridor
  625. 26:29with nikenseeki
  626. 26:31a park that is activated by rain and
  627. 26:33water
  628. 26:36phyto limitations and cleansing system
  629. 26:39playfully interweave into the design
  630. 26:41features in the overall
  631. 26:43curation like this by billions is
  632. 26:45inspired from baringtonia seeds floating
  633. 26:48and moving in a rain garden
  634. 26:52mangrove was found on site and attempt
  635. 26:54was made to establish a habitat for
  636. 26:57fireflies which need a very specific
  637. 27:00food and environment to drive on
  638. 27:04fireflies aids are laid on moist water
  639. 27:06bank lava then drop into water and fit
  640. 27:10on a type of snail
  641. 27:12and this type of snail
  642. 27:13fed on a type of algae that only grow on
  643. 27:17mangrove roots
  644. 27:18the lava will then climb up to the
  645. 27:20marginal plants when it is raining
  646. 27:25it is stochastic
  647. 27:27we can only prepare the ground
  648. 27:29yet the web of life provide us with a
  649. 27:32rich array of ecological imagination
  650. 27:35we hope one day the tunnel will
  651. 27:37transport one to a place filled with
  652. 27:39fire flights
  653. 27:44the canal is proposed to reconnect with
  654. 27:46sea to allow and acting and mp trauma
  655. 27:50habitats to happen again in singapore
  656. 27:52species like giant blue prawns migrate
  657. 27:55between fresh and salt water at some
  658. 27:57stage of their life
  659. 28:00cycle in 2018 we won a competition for
  660. 28:04singapore third botanical garden
  661. 28:08singapore botanical garden garden by the
  662. 28:11bay
  663. 28:11and jurong lake gardens are the three
  664. 28:13botanical gardens of singapore a lot of
  665. 28:16absolute distinctions but we identify
  666. 28:19botanical garden as botany history
  667. 28:22garden by the bay as entertainment and
  668. 28:25we are for seeing jerome lake garden as
  669. 28:27an expression of ecological
  670. 28:29sustainability
  671. 28:31we are very proud to be the first local
  672. 28:33firm to get such a national project
  673. 28:36after the british colonial governments
  674. 28:38and uk-based landscape architects grand
  675. 28:40associates
  676. 28:44jerome lake garden center originally was
  677. 28:47constituted by a chinese garden and a
  678. 28:50japanese garden the intention was to
  679. 28:52fill in the desire of traveling to japan
  680. 28:55and the nostalgia towards the china at
  681. 28:57that time
  682. 28:58but today the value of the gardens has
  683. 29:01changed
  684. 29:02as a local landscape architectural firm
  685. 29:04with knowledge of tropical plants and
  686. 29:06ecology we envisage together with
  687. 29:09emparks to express the current
  688. 29:11environmental crisis and the beauty of
  689. 29:13tropics through technology nature
  690. 29:16ecological importance and eventually
  691. 29:19connecting back to the community of
  692. 29:21singapore
  693. 29:22it is an ecological
  694. 29:24orientated botanical garden for people
  695. 29:26to engage with nature
  696. 29:30water breeds life we take a close
  697. 29:33approach to revival the equal tones
  698. 29:35between water and land
  699. 29:37we attempt to leave water ages around
  700. 29:39and on the island from heavy human
  701. 29:41intervention
  702. 29:43one of the example is to create a
  703. 29:46rainforest stream's water environment
  704. 29:48an aquatic environment that is acidic
  705. 29:52we studied homo and hollow that is a
  706. 29:54matter of insulating underwater land
  707. 29:56formation to collect leaf litter
  708. 29:59this design will assist in changing the
  709. 30:02water's ph
  710. 30:03to maintain a healthy ecological balance
  711. 30:06we also play with water depth and design
  712. 30:08a floating green lace to allow smaller
  713. 30:11fish to escape from potatoes and breed
  714. 30:16hanging buttness fern and epiphytes will
  715. 30:18assist to collect leaf litter and as a
  716. 30:21funnel that nurtures the most below
  717. 30:23the storage paddles that nourishes life
  718. 30:25is based on the footprints of the estin
  719. 30:28mega fauna of singapore
  720. 30:31to materialize the floating green lace
  721. 30:33we did some experiments in our office
  722. 30:36we also cut through an existing
  723. 30:38artificial mouth to create a micro
  724. 30:41climate environment not only for the
  725. 30:42comfort of humans but also for plants
  726. 30:46a gorge with 90 of humidity and 27
  727. 30:49degrees celsius allow epiphytes
  728. 30:52lithophights and paraphytes to grow
  729. 30:56plants will be curated vertically
  730. 30:58allowing water to move down at different
  731. 31:01speeds and
  732. 31:02sounds at the center of the gorge a sea
  733. 31:05note is echoing and magnifying the
  734. 31:08sounds of delicate water like a cave
  735. 31:12precious plants are protected in niches
  736. 31:15of the gods wall we use a periscope
  737. 31:17technique to reflect light into the
  738. 31:19little kids
  739. 31:26parastone is a material that absorbs
  740. 31:28water like a sponge we do through the
  741. 31:31material and inserted the lithophytes
  742. 31:33[Music]
  743. 31:36we also attempted to have knee panties
  744. 31:39the pitcher plants that will reveal its
  745. 31:41other appearance under the blood light
  746. 31:43this is how insects see plants
  747. 31:47these ribarian gardens will have water
  748. 31:49constantly flooding and flushing the
  749. 31:51ground at an interval
  750. 31:53encouraging most to grow on the ground
  751. 31:55and the tree trunk
  752. 31:59we are going to have the world's biggest
  753. 32:01water lily collections
  754. 32:03lymphoids and aquatic small flowers and
  755. 32:06looks like water lily is delicately
  756. 32:08displayed in the pond next to the
  757. 32:10walkway
  758. 32:12we collected water lilies around the
  759. 32:13world and also trying to feature the
  760. 32:16underwater world
  761. 32:19water lilies are one of the most ancient
  762. 32:21flowering plants that evolved with
  763. 32:22beetle
  764. 32:23the wisdom of evolution leads me to
  765. 32:25write this passage for my art mentos
  766. 32:28exhibition
  767. 32:29as a tributary to my roots
  768. 32:32to me evolution allows me to see a plant
  769. 32:35beyond its commodity value symbol and
  770. 32:38form
  771. 32:39just as the water lily under my mentos
  772. 32:41brush and towards time space and skill
  773. 32:43in life
  774. 32:45here you'll see a floating garden that
  775. 32:48is moving slowly above water
  776. 32:50it is done through the reflections upon
  777. 32:52habitats and plants
  778. 32:54these gardens are the learning grounds
  779. 32:57where one can understand and learn about
  780. 32:59rainforest and allows the current
  781. 33:02generations and generations to come into
  782. 33:04full interaction with the environment
  783. 33:08this floating garden is also inspired
  784. 33:10from endangered roots in angkor wat
  785. 33:13and life of pipe
  786. 33:15this is a true vision for rewilding that
  787. 33:17we hope for
  788. 33:18a flourishing of the living world with
  789. 33:21all the infinite connections and
  790. 33:23relationships with the unfathomably
  791. 33:25complex and magical web of life
  792. 33:31gradually rewilding and biophilia are
  793. 33:34resonating across singapore's different
  794. 33:36sectors
  795. 33:37in 2020 during the pandemic period we
  796. 33:40participated in an industrial park
  797. 33:42master plan competition with waha
  798. 33:47we focus on genotype and not just from
  799. 33:50our usual phenotypical readings
  800. 33:53inspired by david milaj we propose to
  801. 33:56extend our natural
  802. 33:58natural capital from the nature reserve
  803. 34:00into industrial areas through cloning
  804. 34:06an experiment of the tanning water
  805. 34:07ecosystem was proposed to each initiate
  806. 34:10a test ground with future
  807. 34:12environmentally friendly construction
  808. 34:14materials in architecture
  809. 34:16and implanting materials in landscape
  810. 34:20a reverse design based on a need to
  811. 34:22sustain a specific habitat
  812. 34:25and exchange ecosystem and not
  813. 34:27restricted to the current market
  814. 34:30availability and human comfort aesthetic
  815. 34:34moving forward we participated in the
  816. 34:37venice biennale team how well we lived
  817. 34:40together last year
  818. 34:42as a continuant towards the agenda of
  819. 34:44city in nature and the capital city for
  820. 34:46vertigo green we see the potential to
  821. 34:49rewild the skies with future green
  822. 34:51buildings to include flora and fauna
  823. 34:59we came up with three buildings typology
  824. 35:02first extending nature reserve onto the
  825. 35:04buildings
  826. 35:05and the forest fringe
  827. 35:08second connecting existing buildings and
  828. 35:10increasing green surfaces
  829. 35:17and the third lifting up various
  830. 35:19habitats into the sky with
  831. 35:21self-sustaining ecosystem
  832. 35:30these three typologies will constitute a
  833. 35:33township which has the same size as
  834. 35:35bukit dima nature reserve the highest
  835. 35:37hill in singapore
  836. 35:39these two habitats become a singular
  837. 35:41entity which catalyzes the rain by
  838. 35:43releasing biogenic volatile organic
  839. 35:46compounds into the sky
  840. 35:51this future rain will replenish the dark
  841. 35:53bound reservoirs along singapore south
  842. 35:55eastern shore
  843. 35:56the wall that will be built to supply
  844. 35:58more fresh water and anticipate the sea
  845. 36:01level rise of 2050.
  846. 36:06the insulation is an assemblage of a
  847. 36:08miniature world
  848. 36:10one half represents the bukit timah
  849. 36:11nature reserve presenting nature where
  850. 36:14fluoride and fauna strife
  851. 36:17the other half represents the city as a
  852. 36:19sky forest and bought with emerald green
  853. 36:23as one walk around the table they move
  854. 36:26through relatives and imaginaries
  855. 36:29these two words coincide extension
  856. 36:31surely but at the same time cannot be
  857. 36:33separated
  858. 36:36in a void between the screens a glass
  859. 36:38mosquito reminds us of our fragility
  860. 36:42mosquitoes are the recorded killing
  861. 36:45billions of people more than from humans
  862. 36:48war these species always promise that we
  863. 36:51are but
  864. 36:53just part of the nature
  865. 36:57we also created three perfumes that are
  866. 36:59emitted periodically
  867. 37:02this represents represents earth free
  868. 37:04shields that provide potent protection
  869. 37:06from cosmic heat and radiation
  870. 37:09water
  871. 37:10let's see whether you can smell it i
  872. 37:12have it here
  873. 37:15this is water
  874. 37:17try

  879. 37:37in this way they are like hyper object
  880. 37:39one that connects but it is difficult
  881. 37:42for us to sense
  882. 37:44we envision to have more nature reserved
  883. 37:47in the sky
  884. 37:48the upwards acknowledges the extensive
  885. 37:50biological lineage of the world to
  886. 37:52humble us in the presence of nature and
  887. 37:55other living beings
  888. 37:57as we are all interspecies co-existing
  889. 37:59together with
  890. 38:01co-existed coexisting together on earth
  891. 38:06these two were
  892. 38:08are separated by offset screens
  893. 38:10reflecting numerous oscillating
  894. 38:12dualities
  895. 38:13singapore being a smart nations will
  896. 38:15soon adopt the artificial intelligence
  897. 38:18humans could live with nature side by
  898. 38:20side
  899. 38:21with the help of ai to observe natural
  900. 38:23successions allowing us to be more aware
  901. 38:26of the substance nuances happening in
  902. 38:28the sky forest
  903. 38:35similar to ovid
  904. 38:36metamorphosis despite cutting-edge
  905. 38:39technology that defines the civilization
  906. 38:41of ours we still struggle with the
  907. 38:44annuality that remains in us
  908. 38:47this is a window of opportunity to
  909. 38:50rewire our human's mind
  910. 38:57slowly we move towards the temperate
  911. 38:58zone
  912. 39:00the growth is a mixed-use development
  913. 39:03with residential and commercial
  914. 39:04components in baywin district of
  915. 39:06guangzhou china
  916. 39:09located adjacent to the largely
  917. 39:11vegetated bayween mountains beside
  918. 39:14increasing greeneries on the facades we
  919. 39:16extended precious trees from buying
  920. 39:18mountains into the development
  921. 39:22we desire a garden that floods
  922. 39:24temporarily during the raining season it
  923. 39:26reflects the beauty of this subtropical
  924. 39:28monsoon climate
  925. 39:30here water pine that sodium is planted
  926. 39:33in their favorable
  927. 39:35flooding gardens again
  928. 39:38alilah taiwu suzhou is designed as a
  929. 39:40contemporary interpretations of the
  930. 39:43traditional hamlets of local fishermen
  931. 39:46in addition to embodying the culture of
  932. 39:48suzhou and china we are also committed
  933. 39:50to create a natural and ecological
  934. 39:53environment we use ecological soils
  935. 39:56large natural water cascade gardens and
  936. 39:59water
  937. 40:00channels to connect to the inner lake
  938. 40:04we re-integrate the eroded limestone
  939. 40:07formation into the water garden
  940. 40:09niches in this thai rock allows local
  941. 40:12crustaceans and other life to take
  942. 40:14shelter within
  943. 40:18texodiums the only water pine was used
  944. 40:21as a features here
  945. 40:22one pathed through this water pine
  946. 40:24forest with water movement activating
  947. 40:26the floating lanterns
  948. 40:31the winning of gold in architecture and
  949. 40:33landscape in singapore pavilion brought
  950. 40:35us a few projects in middle east we
  951. 40:38further expand the notion of rewilding
  952. 40:40into the real desert
  953. 40:43one of the projects is near john nobel
  954. 40:46subterraneans resulting sharan we can't
  955. 40:48mention the name of the project
  956. 40:50aola is now the focus of the saudi
  957. 40:52kingdom as a new heritage tourism
  958. 40:54destination
  959. 40:56we persuaded the client to look into
  960. 40:58future sustainability and revolving
  961. 41:02water and soil are the most important
  962. 41:04elements to sustain life in the desert
  963. 41:07saudi arabia's ground water is depleted
  964. 41:10we propose a series of water
  965. 41:12sustainability strategies in landscape
  966. 41:14and display in the process of vital
  967. 41:16remediation of grey waters and
  968. 41:19technologies like pacific irrigation
  969. 41:22combining with the ancient wisdom of the
  970. 41:25napathians the water will fit into the
  971. 41:27native flower land and be shared with
  972. 41:30the flora and fauna outside the boundary
  973. 41:34we did a reverse of desertification
  974. 41:37native plants are selected for their
  975. 41:39ability to stabilize sand
  976. 41:41nitrification
  977. 41:43enrich soil with leaf little and
  978. 41:46eventually working hand-in-hand with
  979. 41:48mobile fauna
  980. 41:50the exchange of nutrients and the
  981. 41:52movement of energy done through the
  982. 41:54animals like birds further enriched the
  983. 41:56biodiversity and soil
  984. 42:03on the polarity of the desert is the
  985. 42:05rain forest in 2010 we started to
  986. 42:08explore the rainforest in borneo
  987. 42:11i went for a river cruise in
  988. 42:13kinapatangan i was rather immersed by
  989. 42:16the life along the river but sooner than
  990. 42:18later my heart sank
  991. 42:20but when i saw the truth of oil palm
  992. 42:23plantations colonizing the land after
  993. 42:25the 10 meter
  994. 42:27forest baffle
  995. 42:28but we still find beauty from this
  996. 42:30complex relationship between lives
  997. 42:33it was the first time in my life that i
  998. 42:35became aware of the biodiversity in a
  999. 42:37rainforest ecosystem
1000. 42:40this awareness is transformed into an
  1001. 42:42urge to explore
1002. 42:44to comprehend and to connect to the land
  1003. 42:46that i was born in
1004. 42:48this led us to create a temporary
1005. 42:50treetop cinema in the rainforest canopy
1006. 42:5326 meters above the forest floor
1007. 42:57the firm we show is a famous old italian
1008. 42:59drama santokam by emilio salgari
1009. 43:03this site sits in a rainforest seaside
  1010. 43:05town called santagan
1011. 43:08we realize that most italians do not
1012. 43:10know about santa khan as a place
1013. 43:12and most people of this town do not know
1014. 43:14about the one celebrated drama
1015. 43:18the project connects people of two lands
1016. 43:20and mirrors two vastly different
  1017. 43:22cultures
1018. 43:23the treetop cinema exposes through the
1019. 43:25imagination of the film and the beauty
  1020. 43:28of the jungle
1021. 43:31during the day people on the platform
1022. 43:33were also connected to the rich vertical
  1023. 43:35biodiversity
1024. 43:36of the rarely explored canopies of the
  1025. 43:39rain forest
1026. 43:40canopy dueling insects were collected on
1027. 43:42the illuminated screens before the movie
  1028. 43:45started
1029. 43:46in the tropics 1500 species of insects
1030. 43:50can be found in one single tree
1031. 43:54within a week the tower was dismantled
1032. 43:56to leave behind no footprint in the
  1033. 43:58forest
1034. 43:59but to resonate through the memories of
  1035. 44:02all involved
1036. 44:04while the footprints are left in one of
1037. 44:06our longest projects in borneo alilah
  1038. 44:09dalits bay
1039. 44:12a project laden with our tropical dreams
1040. 44:15this is also a project that gives me
  1041. 44:16this complexion
1042. 44:18the hotel is sitting on a bay
1043. 44:20230 meter long one unique building
  1044. 44:23facing a beautiful sunset
1045. 44:25one side of the building is plastered by
1046. 44:27seawind while another site is protected
1047. 44:30by the blessing of mount kinabalu
  1048. 44:43the building itself created a few
1049. 44:45interesting micro climates for us to
  1050. 44:47expand different gardens
1051. 44:48accordingly the baudelaire will was
1052. 44:51pulled out by us mangrove park is
1053. 44:54proposed in the burned forest we attempt
1054. 44:56to rebound the water in the hotel and
1055. 44:59connect the water to the mangrove
  1056. 45:01pond
1057. 45:02we have an equal playground a variety of
1058. 45:05fruit trees to share with animals and a
  1059. 45:07bad house
1060. 45:08but it's an important pollinators in the
  1061. 45:11mangrove forest
1062. 45:23the hotel is blessed by the monsoons and
  1063. 45:25tropical storms
1064. 45:30with abundant rain slashing onto the
1065. 45:32land feeding plants and animals filling
  1066. 45:35up
1067. 45:36ponds waters is essential to all lives
1068. 45:40a water system is connecting the hotel
1069. 45:42to the mangrove park it is a highway for
1070. 45:45animals to cross the two rooms including
  1071. 45:48us
  1072. 45:49the projects carried sarah dressing's
  1073. 45:51initial design philosophy on
  1074. 45:52immateriality
1075. 45:54some path was calculated to frame the
1076. 45:56sun setting at the center of pavilions
  1077. 45:58according to special days
  1078. 46:00like earth day
  1079. 46:02labor's day
  1080. 46:05main growth days on 27 july
  1081. 46:09children's day on 7 october
  1082. 46:14christmas
  1083. 46:17and valentine's day
1084. 46:20and of course the most important one for
1085. 46:22the projects to get through we celebrate
  1086. 46:24the client's birthday
1087. 46:28when the night comes bats enjoy their
1088. 46:30feast in the forest we propose to have
1089. 46:32an animal friendly lighting concept to
  1090. 46:34protect our nortonal friends
1091. 46:42so reserve the pavilion to propose to a
  1092. 46:44girlfriend now
1093. 46:48another pavilion is inspired from
1094. 46:50peasant agus attack albert in borneo
1095. 46:56in order to create as many habitats as
1096. 46:58possible we use different materials and
1097. 47:01construction methods to detail out the
  1098. 47:03water ages
1099. 47:04a secret pond is hidden in the coastal
  1100. 47:07forest providing an animals a drinking
  1101. 47:09pool
1102. 47:11after rain water with residues from the
1103. 47:13buildings flow into the pond
1104. 47:17and connects to a flood plains planted
  1105. 47:20with reeds
1106. 47:25surrounding topography is shaped such
1107. 47:27that the surface water runs into the
  1108. 47:29floodplain
1109. 47:31the overflow water will then be flowing
1110. 47:33out to the cascade and joins into a
  1111. 47:35natural pond through a stream
  1112. 47:39phytoremediation plants are planted
1113. 47:41around the ponds streams and floodplains
1114. 47:44that helps to cleanse the water before
  1115. 47:46it reaches the sea
1116. 47:47silt and nutrients are the main cause of
  1117. 47:50eutrophications
1118. 47:54we drained the sentimentation pond one
1119. 47:56afternoon with water decreasing we
1120. 47:59became mindful of little creatures
1121. 48:01challenging the tightening aquatic space
1122. 48:04we get cat tails water films from ubuntu
1123. 48:06forest they are strong phytoremediator
  1124. 48:10and supports a fantastic variety of
1125. 48:12insects or good food for water birds
1126. 48:15this is the beginning of a habitat
1127. 48:19under the leaf little are stone slabs to
1128. 48:22prevent the spread of cat tail
1129. 48:24the assist is open enough for the sun to
  1130. 48:27spark the water once a year
  1131. 48:29no hassle of maintenance
1132. 48:32ecotone species will populate different
  1133. 48:34realms a highway provided provides
1134. 48:37connectivity and energy flows in between
  1135. 48:40four animals
1136. 48:42we learned a lot from these projects
  1137. 48:44example
  1138. 48:47how to plant mangrove
1139. 48:49first we collected rhizophora seeds that
1140. 48:51were abandoned in the coastal fringe
1141. 48:53where we had our lunch giving them a
1142. 48:55second chunk secondly we use a stick to
1143. 48:58punch a deeper hole for seed pods to be
1144. 49:00inserted and then we add gravel to
1145. 49:02support and prevent leaching of soil
1146. 49:05and third let the seed decide its future
1147. 49:10we have a collection of plants according
1148. 49:12to the taxonomy here take a look at the
1149. 49:15genus of mimi cylon they all look the
  1150. 49:17same
1151. 49:19but in fact each is supporting different
1152. 49:22insects and birds can we perceive plants
1153. 49:25beyond human orientated aesthetic and
1154. 49:28convenience the facade is hybridized
  1155. 49:31with green
1156. 49:32both droppers and climbers are selected
1157. 49:35to blanket the facades here we are
1158. 49:37trying to connect the ground to the sky
  1159. 49:39[Music]
1160. 49:41ficus is a kison species that provides
1161. 49:44food source all year round they are
1162. 49:46inserted sporadically on the facade we
1163. 49:48call the projects ficus focus
1164. 49:52the phycus trees were burst out from a
1165. 49:53facade stretching their arms out and
1166. 49:55sanding down their area routes this is
  1167. 49:58something to good
1168. 49:59good to do in australia too
1169. 50:02but come for the fruits with more
  1170. 50:04nutrients and microorganisms exchange
1171. 50:08so how to do this
1172. 50:09first we find a new area's root wrap it
  1173. 50:12with long tube
1174. 50:14and attract the roots with austin and
  1175. 50:16water below
1176. 50:19cause the ficus a little and wait till
1177. 50:22the roots grow to the ground
1178. 50:29once it touches the soil the area roots
  1179. 50:31will strengthen itself as a supporting
1180. 50:33need for the main trunk
1181. 50:36hopefully these connections will allow
1182. 50:37terrestrial animals like palm seawords
1183. 50:39to enjoy some fruit on the ficus
1184. 50:43a snake path without snake
1185. 50:47subterranean wool is something that we
1186. 50:49can see through the assistant with the
1187. 50:51assistant with machines today the
  1188. 50:53underground network is a forest
  1189. 50:56that is commonly communicate
  1190. 50:58communicating through mycorrhizals
1191. 51:01we are trying to review this
  1192. 51:02subterranean world in this
1193. 51:06project a playground is waiting for the
1194. 51:09sun to set at the center on a children's
  1195. 51:11day
1196. 51:13we too share the playground with animals
1197. 51:18we were brought into puerto rico el
1198. 51:20junkie national park by an ecologist
  1199. 51:23friends from florida
  1200. 51:25the islands experienced and
  1201. 51:27a devastating hurricane mario in 2017
1202. 51:31they are looking for restoration and
  1203. 51:33conservation
1204. 51:35at some of the damage area
1205. 51:37these projects involve technology such
1206. 51:40as drones to study the national park
1207. 51:44according to study we understand that
1208. 51:46mongoose is an invasive species in the
1209. 51:48island that causes a few species to
  1210. 51:50extinction
1211. 51:51to small animals a small stone gap like
  1212. 51:54that
  1213. 51:55might be a saving ground
1214. 51:59a feature is designed to breach both
1215. 52:01tennophobe and nature levels to view
  1216. 52:03through a refuge for small animals
1217. 52:06one can drive a little robot into the
1218. 52:08heaps of rock to hunt the treasures and
  1219. 52:10encounter with the animals
  1220. 52:17you can feel the animal's perspective
1221. 52:18like mace runner through contouring
1222. 52:21these little movable robots we hope this
1223. 52:23little insulation will assist not only
1224. 52:26the small animals but also to rewire
1225. 52:28humans consciousness for the ecology
1226. 52:35we also created some jobs for ourselves
  1227. 52:37in australia
  1228. 52:38in 2021 we participated in melbourne
1229. 52:41design week with daughter yazoo
1230. 52:44tim designed the world you want through
1231. 52:46the lens of climate examining how
1232. 52:48designers can mediate the effect of
1233. 52:50climate change and ecological breakdown
1234. 52:54we mirror five rooftops of melbourne
1235. 52:57city up to the strata of the sky
1236. 53:00i will pick a few here that is about
  1237. 53:02rewilding
  1238. 53:05in the burial of
1239. 53:07meteorology we express the history of
1240. 53:09melbourne losing its flower length to
  1241. 53:11sheep pasture
1242. 53:13pollen of rye grass a type of invasive
1243. 53:15grass that is monopod monopolizing
1244. 53:18melbourne flower land and also causing
1245. 53:21thunderstorm asthma is trapped and
  1246. 53:23performing in a glass volcano
  1247. 53:26soft-footed like
1248. 53:28bandicoots are rewild while humans
1249. 53:31footsteps compacted the ground in
1250. 53:32contrast with the flower land above
1251. 53:35it is a theater from the sky to remind
1252. 53:37one the history of the land
1253. 53:42another two are to do with the conflict
1254. 53:45between humans and other animals
  1255. 53:47mosquitoes and dingo
1256. 53:49tingo are not as cute as our pet dog
1257. 53:52they are pushed away from city with a we
1258. 53:55have a rooftop here for people to
1259. 53:57encounter with this interspecies of our
1260. 53:59friends that evolved together with us
  1261. 54:01[Music]
1262. 54:03mosquito have been the number one killer
1263. 54:06we feature a species of vegans mosquito
  1264. 54:08that doesn't suck blood or spread
  1265. 54:10disease
1266. 54:12it is to remind one that there are more
1267. 54:14species of mosquito than the field that
  1268. 54:16we are fear of
1269. 54:18and are we to play god now to eliminate
  1270. 54:21the species
1271. 54:22i think the encountering of these
1272. 54:24animals summarizes up the space we have
  1273. 54:26to share with animals
1274. 54:29a space totally untouched from humans
1275. 54:32a space where humans close to their door
1276. 54:34close their doors from another living
  1277. 54:36organisms
  1278. 54:37and a space to intermingle
1279. 54:40these three spaces shall be equal status
  1280. 54:43to us
1281. 54:44rewarding is about this intermingle
1282. 54:47how do we share space
1283. 54:49we need strategy to smoothen the new
  1284. 54:51collisions in these relationships
1285. 54:55to resolve the conflicts with undesired
1286. 54:57animals we can design elements like
  1287. 55:00monkey proof rolling
  1288. 55:01or anti-snake windows
1289. 55:04yet in order to achieve a true dissolve
1290. 55:07we need to rewire our mind
1291. 55:11lastly i'd like to conclude the talk
1292. 55:13with three videos that we made for
  1293. 55:14singapore pavilion
1294. 55:20first one is to do with the planetary
1295. 55:22issue that we are all facing including
  1296. 55:24sea level rising in 2050
1297. 55:28singapore's natural base solutions on
1298. 55:30the north is to have a creation in
  1299. 55:33mangrove forest

  1304. 56:05[Music]
  1305. 56:30oh
  1306. 56:37[Music]
1307. 56:48like the tiger the mesmerizing song
1308. 56:50crossed through the street distributes
1309. 56:52to the core of freedom from the sea
1310. 56:55tribe oran saleeta which was chased out
1311. 56:58by singapore in the early days
1312. 57:01the single cloud floating in a beautiful
1313. 57:03sky is the result of the rise in carbon
1314. 57:06dioxide which suppresses the formation
  1315. 57:08of stratocumulus clouds
  1316. 57:13[Music]
1317. 57:36the second video is an expression of
1318. 57:38altruism and inclusiveness towards the
  1319. 57:41forest ecosystem
1320. 57:43the video is divided into three parts
1321. 57:46the flores flow where humans enjoy the
  1322. 57:49hybrid orchid a hybrid durian
1323. 57:51the upper tier where home bills enjoy
1324. 57:53native durians and the tip waving to
  1325. 57:56home builds
  1326. 57:58grafting is a technique used in
1327. 58:00agriculture to produce juicier bigger
  1328. 58:02and tastier fruit
1329. 58:04here we use grafting to share our
  1330. 58:07favorite durians with animals
  1331. 58:10[Music]
  1332. 58:27[Music]
  1333. 58:35[Music]
  1334. 58:50[Music]
  1335. 58:56[Music]
  1336. 59:02good job
1337. 59:18bet is also benefited here pollinating
  1338. 59:21during this their part-time job during
  1339. 59:23the durian flowering seasons
1340. 59:32third one is about unbelt
1341. 59:35seeing beyond our biological limitations
1342. 59:38here we use the pavilion as the catalyst
1343. 59:41to show what we don't see through our
1344. 59:43big five senses which includes
  1345. 59:46architects eyes through building
  1346. 59:47software like beam
1347. 59:56the inner organ of running electricity
1348. 59:58and water that sustain the whole
  1349. 1:00:00pavilion
1350. 1:00:11plant sensitivity towards light spectrum
  1351. 1:00:23collections from our robot's eyes
  1352. 1:00:32so

  1356. 1:01:11falcons ultraviolet wave range

1358. 1:01:31ar filter that is popular today
  1359. 1:01:51point cloud scanning
1360. 1:02:03and at last this collapsed into an image
1361. 1:02:06like the latest space telescope jab swam
  1362. 1:02:09gems web
1363. 1:02:11the sound here is an imitation of the
  1364. 1:02:13most ancient
1365. 1:02:15reaches from our ancestral the caveman
1366. 1:02:18the fire that once drawn us a clear line

  1368. 1:02:22ignite a new relationship with other
  1369. 1:02:25beings
1370. 1:02:34digital technology through robots our
1371. 1:02:37machines and the many meta verses can
1372. 1:02:39assure that our human being senses are
1373. 1:02:41not the only one that exists
