  1. 0:00Overseas now to that deadly heat wave
  2. 0:02melting records across Western Europe
  3. 0:04and it's about to get worse as brutal
  4. 0:06new highs hit the region. CBS News
  5. 0:08foreign correspondent Chris Livesay is
  6. 0:10in Paris which once again top triple
  7. 0:13digits.
  8. 0:14>> Visitors flock to Paris expecting the
  9. 0:17Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Instead,
  10. 0:20extreme heat is closing their doors
  11. 0:23early.
  12. 0:23>> So many people have traveled from around
  13. 0:25the world aren't getting to see the
  14. 0:27sites that Paris has to offer because of
  15. 0:30this heat wave and it's dangerously hot.
  16. 0:33>> Europe is in the midst of its second
  17. 0:35heat wave this year and summer's only
  18. 0:38just begun.
  19. 0:39But unlike the US, air conditioning is
  20. 0:42not ubiquitous. Here in France, only 25%
  21. 0:46of homes have it.
  22. 0:48>> Today was the day you decided to jump
  23. 0:50in.
  24. 0:52>> Already at least 40 people have drowned
  25. 0:55trying to stay cool in lakes, rivers,
  26. 0:57and canals like this one in Paris.
  27. 1:00>> And you can't blame them for cooling
  28. 1:02off. Tonight France is one of the
  29. 1:03hottest places on Earth, hotter than 99%
  30. 1:08of the planet, including parts of some
  31. 1:11of the hottest deserts.
  32. 1:13>> The current heat wave isn't limited to
  33. 1:15France. In London, commuters are
  34. 1:17dreading blistering rides on the tube.
  35. 1:20In Rome, getting a glimpse of the Pope
  36. 1:23will cost you a sunburn. As heat waves
  37. 1:25become more frequent and more fierce,
  38. 1:28Europe must confront a new reality. It's
  39. 1:31most famous landmarks were built for a
  40. 1:34cooler world.
  41. 1:36>> The UK today broke its all-time high for
  42. 1:39the month of June topping 96 degrees.
  43. 1:43But here in Paris, that almost seemed
  44. 1:46cool where the temperature topped 104
  45. 1:50degrees. That's only the fourth time
  46. 1:51that's ever happened in 150
  47. 1:55years. Tony.
