Full transcript
- 0:00I've already sunk 30 plus hours into
- 0:02Dead Island 2, so here's a list of 35
- 0:04tips and tricks I wish I knew before I
- 0:07started. They'll save you hours of
- 0:08frustration, make your character level
- 0:10up faster by getting you more XP more
- 0:12quickly, get you loads of money earlier
- 0:14in the game, and even explain some
- 0:16features the game doesn't even tell you
- 0:18about. And we'll be talking legendary
- 0:20weapons, too. All without giving any
- 0:22story spoilers, so you don't need to
- 0:24worry about that. We're also sponsored
- 0:25by Zotac today, and I'll talk more about
- 0:27that later. Let's begin. keys, locks,
- 0:29and secret areas. If you find a key and
- 0:31have no idea what it unlocks, don't
- 0:33spend ages searching randomly hoping you
- 0:35stumble on it. Because sometimes the
- 0:37thing you need to unlock is actually
- 0:39pretty far away from where you are.
- 0:40Instead, when you pick the key up, pause
- 0:43your game, go into your inventory, and
- 0:45look at the description of the key
- 0:46because it's going to give you a little
- 0:47bit more precise info as to what you're
- 0:50actually looking for. There's a similar
- 0:51trick you can use for safes. When you
- 0:53find a safe in the world, but you don't
- 0:54have the key for it, don't worry because
- 0:56the game marks the safe on your map from
- 0:59that point. So, you can really easily
- 1:00get back to it later. Then, when you
- 1:02find a key in future and the description
- 1:04in the inventory matches the location
- 1:06that you have marked on your map, you
- 1:08know that you can put the two together
- 1:09and get what's inside. In some cases,
- 1:11the right key can only be found by
- 1:13killing a certain zombie as well. So, if
- 1:15you are looking for a key, don't just
- 1:16run around an area, but leave the
- 1:18zombies alive while you do so, because
- 1:19it might be that the zombies themselves
- 1:21are key to you finding the key. God,
- 1:23that was awful. I'm so sorry. Sometimes
- 1:25you can get around the keys and the
- 1:27locks completely. A lot of us are used
- 1:29to locked areas only being accessible
- 1:30one way in games, but in this, there are
- 1:32occasionally alternative ways to break
- 1:34in. They do often have a small downside,
- 1:36like setting off an alarm, but if it
- 1:38stops you having to fap about with a key
- 1:39and a lock, then it's worth doing. The
- 1:41flip side to this is some areas look
- 1:43like they should be able to be gotten
- 1:45into or they look like they're going to
- 1:46have a key somewhere and so you get
- 1:48tempted to search for the key so you can
- 1:50get in, but these are actually quest
- 1:52locked areas. You might just need to
- 1:54progress the main quest a tiny bit or it
- 1:56might be that you just go there for a
- 1:57side quest. So don't make the mistake
- 1:59I've made of looking for keys for stuff
- 2:00that the game literally gives you during
- 2:02a quest later on. If you missed the
- 2:04tutorial hint for these fuse boxes, you
- 2:06might think that you need to search the
- 2:08area to find a fuse and then bring it
- 2:10back to the box to open the door. But
- 2:12actually, it's vendors that sell fuses,
- 2:14but you can only carry three at a time.
- 2:16So, every time you go back to a vendor,
- 2:17always stock up on the max number of
- 2:19fuses you can afford, so you've always
- 2:21got a spare handy in case there's a door
- 2:22that you really want to open while
- 2:24you're exploring. Sometimes vendors run
- 2:26out of fuses, and this just means that
- 2:28you need to go to a vendor in a
- 2:29different world location that still has
- 2:31lots of fuse boxes ready to be fixed,
- 2:33and they should have a couple of fuses
- 2:34that you can buy. Progression, side
- 2:36quests, and exploration. You don't
- 2:38actually need to look at things to loot
- 2:41them. And I wish I knew this before I
- 2:43finished the game, but I learned it
- 2:44afterwards. You actually just need to
- 2:46stand near to items, and as long as
- 2:48you're near enough to them, you can be
- 2:49looking the opposite direction, but the
- 2:51pickup button will still actually be on
- 2:53your screen. and it'll just be in the
- 2:54corner or something. So, you don't need
- 2:56to sling your head around like a cat
- 2:57following a laser pointer trying to pick
- 2:59up all the scrap off a shelf. Instead,
- 3:01just wedge yourself against the shelf.
- 3:02Spam that pickup button and you'll slurp
- 3:04up all that loot. Your flashlight never
- 3:06actually runs out of battery. It just
- 3:08turns itself off every now and then when
- 3:10you go in a really bright area. So,
- 3:12anytime you go back into the dark, just
- 3:13remember to turn it back on. It makes
- 3:15life a lot easier. Blueprints are used
- 3:17to craft specific mods and upgrades for
- 3:19your weapons in the game, and they are
- 3:20very often found next to workbenches.
- 3:23These workbenches can actually have
- 3:25multiple blueprints that they will host
- 3:27throughout the game. So, in Emma's
- 3:29Mansion, for example, you'll go back
- 3:30there several times, and it's worth
- 3:32checking the workbench each time to see
- 3:34if there's a new blueprint that has
- 3:36spawned on it for you to pick up.
- 3:37Vendors also sell different blueprints,
- 3:40so I recommend always buying all of a
- 3:42vendor's blueprints in case they restock
- 3:44with others in the future. And different
- 3:46vendors have different supplies, so
- 3:47always check every vendor you find in
- 3:49case they've got new blueprints for you.
- 3:51This side quest in Beverly Hills is
- 3:54super easy. You'll be able to get
- 3:56progress on it as you progress through
- 3:58the game. And it's going to give you a
- 3:59bunch of XP and you'll unlock a new
- 4:01vendor with exclusive blueprints. So,
- 4:04even if you're just focusing on the main
- 4:05quest, I think as soon as this quest
- 4:07becomes available, you should head on
- 4:08over and get it started. At workbenches,
- 4:11you can track parts that you need for
- 4:13certain blueprints that you can't
- 4:15currently afford because you just don't
- 4:16have the resources. And then while
- 4:18you're exploring the world, those
- 4:19resources will be on screen at all
- 4:21times, so you can see how many you have.
- 4:23You have a live counter. The flip side
- 4:25to this is that that counter actually
- 4:26gets kind of annoying kind of fast in my
- 4:28opinion, and you are going to have to go
- 4:30back to the workbench in order to
- 4:31unttrack it. So just keep that in mind
- 4:33before you start tracking everything in
- 4:35sight. I'm going to completely avoid
- 4:36spoilers here, but I just want to point
- 4:38something out so that you don't miss it
- 4:39in the game, cuz it only happens once.
- 4:42There's going to come a point in the
- 4:43game where Jimmy Montana tells you he
- 4:45spent nine seasons on the badge. He's
- 4:47then going to storm out of the room and
- 4:49you're going to jump onto a
- 4:50walkie-talkie. When that finishes, keep
- 4:52listening to the electronics in the room
- 4:55because there's a really funny radio
- 4:57over from another one of the houses in
- 4:59the area. And I think it's worth
- 5:00listening to, and I don't want you guys
- 5:02to rush out of the room and miss it.
- 5:03While you explore, you're going to start
- 5:04finding these scope things that say
- 5:07server offline. Don't make the mistake I
- 5:09made of thinking that means you need to
- 5:11reboot the server yourself somehow and
- 5:13then waste a load of time trying to do
- 5:14that because actually these are just
- 5:16tied to a quest and it's pretty late in
- 5:18the game. So when you first start out
- 5:20just ignore these so you can interact
- 5:22with them later on. The most powerful
- 5:24weapon in the game. The most powerful
- 5:27weapon is none other than a Zotac 4070Ti
- 5:31graphics card. Okay, that's a joke. But
- 5:33the new Zotac 4000 series cards are
- 5:36super powerful and have a whole list of
- 5:38features that sound like they would be
- 5:39amazing for slaying zombies. Hear me
- 5:41out. Things like Ice Storm 2.0 advanced
- 5:44cooling and freeze fan stop and all new
- 5:48Firestorm utility. Like the elemental
- 5:50mod jokes are writing themselves here.
- 5:52And it's super stylish as well. It's got
- 5:55an air optimized design, Spectra 2.0, O,
- 5:58which means it's got RGB lighting with a
- 6:00three pin RGB header and a lovely metal
- 6:04diecast back plate with even more RGBs
- 6:07on it. It's got all that stuff and
- 6:08plenty more. And all of it is supporting
- 6:10Nvidia's ultraefficient ADA love lace
- 6:13architecture. So, if you want to pick
- 6:14one up for yourself and boost your
- 6:16zombie slaying performance, you can
- 6:18click the link in the description to
- 6:19purchase. And of course, thanks again to
- 6:21Zotac for sponsoring today. Money and
- 6:24resources. There is a limit to how much
- 6:26of each item you can carry. I'm not
- 6:28talking weapons here. I'm talking things
- 6:30like fabric, metal parts, zombie parts,
- 6:33all those kinds of scrap. But if you
- 6:35continuously sell the ones you don't
- 6:36need, you'll get loads of money and
- 6:38you'll be able to continuously pick them
- 6:40up in the world, so you don't feel like
- 6:41you're just wasting opportunities to get
- 6:43more stuff. In the early game, if you go
- 6:45into your inventory and take a look, any
- 6:47gray item you have more than about 25
- 6:49of, you can sell the rest of, and it's
- 6:52something like 30 to 50 bucks per part.
- 6:54So, you go through your items as you
- 6:56progress through the game and keep on
- 6:57selling those down to just what you
- 6:59actually need, and you'll find that
- 7:00you're earning thousands and thousands
- 7:02of dollars from this. Another early game
- 7:04tip here is to actually buy some stuff
- 7:05back from those vendors as well.
- 7:07Specifically, the blue items, synthetic
- 7:10fibers, alloys, stuff like that are
- 7:12going to be in shorter supply when
- 7:14you're in the early game, but they get
- 7:15really common later. Now, to really
- 7:17start building your wealth in the early
- 7:18to mid game section, you need to start
- 7:20selling your weapons. Do not keep on
- 7:23scrapping them. At the beginning,
- 7:24scrapping them is totally fine. You do
- 7:26need those resources, but as soon as
- 7:27you've got a loadout that's kind of
- 7:29working for you and you have a little
- 7:31bit of float to work with in terms of
- 7:32resources in your inventory, you're
- 7:34going to want to jump straight into
- 7:35selling all those weapons. This is going
- 7:37to earn you so much goddamn money to the
- 7:40point that towards later stages of the
- 7:42game, one single item you find just from
- 7:44a random zombie kill could be worth 5,
- 7:466, or $7,000. Extra special ones might
- 7:48even be worth more than that. And your
- 7:50upgrades are going to become more
- 7:51expensive as the game progresses, too.
- 7:52So, you need to stay on top of things by
- 7:55selling stuff that you don't need.
- 7:56However, as the game mentions in the
- 7:58early stages of the tutorial, if you
- 8:00scrap a weapon with upgrades on it, then
- 8:02you'll get the resources back from that.
- 8:04And so, there's a little bit of a choice
- 8:06that you need to make here. Do you sell
- 8:08the weapon and get money, or do you just
- 8:10scrap it and get all your hardinvested
- 8:12resources back? And the answer to this
- 8:14doesn't have to be one or the other. You
- 8:16can go to the workbench individually,
- 8:18remove certain upgrades, get the
- 8:21resources back from those specific
- 8:22upgrades, and then still sell the
- 8:24weapon, and still get loads of money for
- 8:26it. You will earn less, so a fully
- 8:28decked out weapon might be worth twice
- 8:30as much as a weapon with zero upgrades.
- 8:32But if it means that you get to keep
- 8:33some really valuable resources that are
- 8:35hard to come by, then it's worth doing.
- 8:37You might also be able to find some
- 8:38extra stuff that you can sell in your
- 8:40lost and found locker. This will fill up
- 8:41with weapons that you forgot to pick up
- 8:43or didn't have space for on your travels
- 8:45through the world. And it's really
- 8:46worthwhile checking back on it every
- 8:48couple of missions just in case there's
- 8:50some stuff in there that you can either
- 8:51scrap, sell, or use. Weapons,
- 8:53characters, and combat secrets. I got
- 8:55through the entire campaign before
- 8:57realizing that if a weapon drops onto
- 8:59the floor, you can hold down the pickup
- 9:02button and instead of going into your
- 9:03inventory, it will equip straight into
- 9:05your hand, swapping out with your
- 9:07currently equipped weapon. You can
- 9:08cancel a heavy attack which you've
- 9:10charged up by pressing your reload
- 9:12button. So on PS5, that's square. You
- 9:15can also end your fury early by pressing
- 9:17the same buttons you used to activate
- 9:18it. This will save some fury meter so
- 9:21you can get back into it sooner next
- 9:22time. Also, energy drinks boost your
- 9:25fury meter. And med packs instantly
- 9:27remove any status effects that you're
- 9:29suffering from. So if you've just been
- 9:31set on fire and you're worried that it's
- 9:32going to burn through loads of your
- 9:33health, the sooner you activate the med
- 9:35pack, the better because you'll
- 9:37obviously get your health back. But
- 9:38you'll also stop yourself from burning
- 9:40in the first place. Med packs will not
- 9:41save you from fall damage, though, and
- 9:43this game does have full damage, and it
- 9:45will pretty much insta-kill you if you
- 9:47fall from too great a height. Another
- 9:49thing that will insta- kill you is if
- 9:50you throw a battery at a zombie and then
- 9:52pick the battery up while it's sparking.
- 9:55It looks like something you could just
- 9:56throw back at them again, but no, it
- 9:58instantly shocks you to death. This is
- 10:00also a reminder to remember that
- 10:02environmental hazards are almost always
- 10:04present in the game. If you're on an
- 10:06especially difficult boss fight or
- 10:08something like that, you might find that
- 10:09you just need to take your tunnel vision
- 10:12off the boss for a second and you might
- 10:13be able to find something that you can
- 10:15activate to turn on a flamethrower to
- 10:17attack the boss for you or things along
- 10:19those lines. If you're having trouble
- 10:21with a certain boss or just a certain
- 10:23enemy in general, really, there's a
- 10:25really easy way to get information
- 10:27instantly on how best to take it down.
- 10:29For some reason, this is hidden in the
- 10:31collectibles menu, but you then want to
- 10:33go into Zedia and find the enemy type
- 10:36that you're having difficulty with. As
- 10:37you rack up your kill count on this type
- 10:39of enemy, you'll get more tips about how
- 10:41to be more efficient. And some of these
- 10:43are really obvious, but some might
- 10:44surprise you. For example, loud noises
- 10:47trigger the transformations of mutators
- 10:49early, and you can harvest extra zombie
- 10:51parts if you maim Crusher's arms before
- 10:54killing them, which they're also weak to
- 10:56by the way, and which will stop them
- 10:58from doing their overhead smash and
- 11:00flail attacks. Things like this you'll
- 11:02pick up during gameplay, but certain
- 11:04more specific tips like blunt damage
- 11:07being super effective on screeches is
- 11:09something that might be a little bit
- 11:11less obvious. Runners are weak to sharp
- 11:14and bleed damage and spiky zombies are
- 11:16weak to explosive damage. Now, a tip I
- 11:19massively recommend you do throughout
- 11:21your game is to actually check what
- 11:23damage type your weapon is and to check
- 11:26its hidden trait. For example, if we
- 11:28open the details for these crescent
- 11:29blades, you can see that it's got sharp
- 11:31as its base damage and has frenzy as its
- 11:34damage profile. Here's another example.
- 11:36This bat has the bulldozer damage
- 11:37profile, and that means that heavy
- 11:39attacks are always crits. I've put perks
- 11:41on to boost critical hit damage because
- 11:43I know that they're going to be
- 11:45happening. And with skilled, every kill
- 11:47I get means that my heavy attacks get
- 11:49even faster and even more powerful,
- 11:51which makes this a pretty deadly
- 11:53combination. You learn all of this just
- 11:54from looking at the details page. This
- 11:56is also where you'll learn exactly how
- 11:59legendary weapons apply their special
- 12:01characteristics. But don't make the
- 12:03mistake I made of looking really hard
- 12:05for legendary weapons earlier in your
- 12:07game when in fact you're going to get
- 12:08your first one at the end of the
- 12:10campaign. Also, activities that are
- 12:12going to grant you extra high tier loot,
- 12:14such as, for example, those fuse boxes,
- 12:16should be spread out through your
- 12:17playthrough so that you don't lose all
- 12:19of your opportunities to get high tier
- 12:21loot from a crate or a safe later in
- 12:23your game when you're a much higher
- 12:24level. You ideally want a pretty even
- 12:26distribution across everything. On the
- 12:28whole, trying to level up as fast as you
- 12:30can is a good idea. And one of the ways
- 12:32that you can incrementally add to the XP
- 12:34that you're getting is by successfully
- 12:36completing dodge counter combos.
- 12:39Normally, you get about 15 to 20 XP per
- 12:42kill, but if you complete a successful
- 12:43dodge counter combo and the zombie dies,
- 12:46you can walk away with 35 XP or so. If
- 12:49you do want to level up faster, I also
- 12:50really recommend you do those side
- 12:52quests that I mentioned in that one
- 12:54Beverly Hills house because there's
- 12:56multiple quests that that woman can give
- 12:58you. You can also permanently make your
- 12:59character stronger by going to the
- 13:01challenges menu. If you go to the bottom
- 13:03to the zombie challenges section, you'll
- 13:05see that these are across all your
- 13:07accounts. They're not just tied to one
- 13:09individual character. And progress on
- 13:11these will give you boosts to all the
- 13:13stats that are available to you really
- 13:15in the game. And because all of these
- 13:16challenges exist, not just the ones in
- 13:18the zombie challenges section, but all
- 13:20of them overall, I highly recommend
- 13:22varying your play style through your
- 13:24game just so that you're doing new
- 13:26things and unlocking new challenges by
- 13:28virtue of playing. Found yourself
- 13:30relying on a certain weapon type, a
- 13:32certain elemental damage, switch it up.
- 13:34By doing so, you'll progress much faster
- 13:36on these challenges, and they're fun to
- 13:38do as well, cuz it really motivates you
- 13:40to play in different ways. Now, no
- 13:42matter how much you do change your play
- 13:44style, there's one thing you can't
- 13:45change Midame, and that's your
- 13:46character. I strongly recommend testing
- 13:49out a couple of characters on different
- 13:51save files just to see what their voice
- 13:53is like and how it feels to play them
- 13:55before committing to playing the entire
- 13:57rest of the game as them. because to be
- 13:59quite honest, some of them have kind of
- 14:01annoying personalities and you want to
- 14:03make sure that you gel before you
- 14:05proceed. During character select, you'll
- 14:06also notice the attributes table. And
- 14:08I've done a bit of actual scientific
- 14:10testing on this and found out that a lot
- 14:13of it you can actually ignore. Some of
- 14:14it's important, but agility, for
- 14:16example, sounds like it's going to
- 14:17affect all of your character movement,
- 14:19but in a test I did, it only affects
- 14:21walk speed, not sprint speed. And seeing
- 14:24as you're always sprinting in this sort
- 14:25of game, it really doesn't make sense to
- 14:27care at all about agility. So take the
- 14:29attributes with a pinch of salt and
- 14:31focus more on the innate skills on that
- 14:33character select screen. If you want a
- 14:34more in-depth look at the different
- 14:36characters and you need a bit more help
- 14:37choosing which is best for you, I've got
- 14:39a complete non-nonsense breakdown which
- 14:41is linked on the screen right now so you
- 14:43can click on through.
