1:4672 we are at the end of The Book of John
1:49and man the images and the symbols uh
1:52the intentionality on John's part is
1:54just masterful we're gonna have a fun
1:58time in the you know 15 20 minutes that
2:01we got to walk through uh these last
2:04couple of chapters of the Book of John
2:06hey if you haven't done the reading for
2:08today do not miss out John chapter 181
2:1219 20 and 21 we got four chapters to
2:15read today Day 72 if you're on a streak
2:19I'm proud of you all right uh if you've
2:22done the reading let's dive in first
2:25thing we're going to do is context clues
2:27just going to remind you uh that Jesus
2:30uh is bringing ushering the power of new
2:33creation and John is writing from a
2:37Genesis perspective he's looking at
2:40Jesus Through the lens of Genesis and
2:42looking at Genesis through the person of
2:44Jesus okay there's this ecosystem
2:47between Genesis and Jesus and John
2:49that's happening it's freaking awesome
2:52and you're going to see a lot of that
2:53stuff kind of come to life today that's
2:57our that's our context next I'm just
2:59gonna I mean I'm going to give you a
3:01barrage of just kind of nerdy nuggets
3:03probably for the next like 15 minutes
3:06just show you parallels like from
3:08Genesis in John John and Genesis Genesis
3:10and John back and forth back and forth
3:12back and forth okay so let's let's
3:15actually go ahead uh the actually the
3:18first thing that I was thinking of we'll
3:20actually leave it um for uh the very
3:23very last thing that we talk about it'll
3:25be our Timeless truth so let's go to
3:27John chapter 19 okay John chapter 19
3:30we're going to get day six okay day six
3:33of New Creation Day six of original
3:35creation uh John chapter 19:5 it says so
3:39Jesus came out wearing the crown of
3:41thorns and the purple robe pilate said
3:44to them behold the man okay behold the
3:47man there we go that's that's going to
3:51frame this behold the man and what
3:54happens on day six of the original
3:55Creation in Genesis chap 1 verse 26 and
3:5927 we get behold Adam okay so we get
4:03behold the man okay on the day six of
4:06New Creation parallel to the creation of
4:09Adam in day six of the original creation
4:12what else do we have okay John 19:30 we
4:16get these words when Jesus had received
4:18the sour wine he said it is finished and
4:21he bowed his head and gave up his Spirit
4:26okay very
4:28anti-stiction Reon okay there's a lot
4:31Gnostic ideas believe that there's no
4:34way for the spirit of the Living God to
4:38have endured the crucifixion so John
4:41makes a point to say that he gives up
4:43his Spirit at the end of the crucifixion
4:46okay so that the crucifixion uh included
4:50not just gnostics also believed that it
4:55was kind of like a hologram of Jesus's
4:57body up on the cross they they also
5:00believe that it was just the body of
5:01Jesus on the cross but not that God was
5:04not involved that there's no way that
5:06God could be involved in suffering
5:08really the root of gnosticism is
5:11escapism and anyone who is bound by
5:13escapism does not rock with the idea of
5:16human suffering okay so we have in John
5:2119:30 these words it is finished it is
5:26finished where have we seen those words
5:27before well Genesis 2: one God finished
5:31the work of creation so we're going to
5:34get uh what comes uh when something is
5:37finished we're going to get Sabbath and
5:39so uh Jesus is going to spend the
5:43seventh day the day that is Holy for
5:45Sabbath Saturday he's going to spend
5:48Sabbath where in the ground there's this
5:53huge kind of tension between Jesus and
5:55the religious leaders all throughout the
5:57gospels but really you can feel it when
5:59you're in John's Gospel of why don't you
6:02worship the Sabbath why why don't you
6:03honor the Sabbath now a Jesus did honor
6:06the Sabbath according to Torah he did
6:08not honor the Sabbath according to the
6:10traditions of religious leaders so he
6:14did not break Sabbath he broke the
6:16religious leaders
6:18interpretations of the fence that was
6:20around the Torah but not the Torah
6:22itself but Jesus is saying well the
6:25reason I I'm not resting okay right now
6:28the way that you would like to do that
6:30is BEC the reason I'm doing miracles on
6:32the Sabbath is because I'm bringing
6:35about new creation and I will rest and
6:38when does he rest that's right he rest
6:40on day seven same day that his father
6:43rested in the original creation he's
6:45going to rest in the new creation and
6:47then John chapter 20 opens up and John
6:50chapter 20 opens and what does it say
6:53now on the first day of the week on the
6:56first day of the week this is the first
6:59day
7:00of New Creation it's not just of the
7:01week talk about an understatement of the
7:05century okay the first day of the week
7:07it is not just the first day of the week
7:08it the first day of the new creation
7:11it's the first day of hinge of History
7:14all right and John 20:15 remember
7:18there's this parallel between John and
7:19Genesis Mary what does she say John 20
7:23verse1 15 he says these words Jesus said
7:27to Heroman why are you weeping whom are
7:30you seeking supposing him to be the
7:32gardener she said to him sir if you have
7:35carried him away tell me where you have
7:37laid him I will take him away Jesus said
7:40to her Mary she turned and said to him
7:43in Aramaic raboni okay so Rabbi what
7:46does Mary think uh Jesus is the gardener
7:50which is oh talk about so wrong but so
7:54right she's wrong because it's Jesus and
7:58she didn't recognize Jesus but she's
7:59right in that this man is in a garden
8:03and he is the new Gardener The Gardener
8:05of the new creation because what was
8:07Adam put in the Garden of Eden to do to
8:10tend it and to keep it which means Adam
8:12was a gardener and here we have the
8:14second Adam who is also a Gardener He's
8:17The Gardener not of the original
8:19creation he's The Gardener of the new
8:21creation next um we're going to have
8:24Jesus uh really ushering in the power of
8:28the Holy Spirit for the disciples we're
8:30going to go to John
8:3220:22 John 20:22 it says this starting
8:36in verse 20 when he had said this he
8:39showed them his hands and his side then
8:42the disciples were glad when they saw
8:44the Lord Jesus said to them again peace
8:47be with you as the father has sent me
8:51even so I am sending you and when he had
8:54said this he breathed on them and said
8:58to them receive the holy spirit so in
9:01John's tradition they get the Holy
9:03Spirit In the book okay whereas Matthew
9:06Mark and Luke they don't get the Holy
9:07Spirit into the book of Acts but for
9:09John uh Jesus directly uh gives him the
9:13Holy Spirit and how does he do
9:15it by breathing on them come on what is
9:20that supposed to make us think of that
9:23Yahweh breathes into Adam's nostrils and
9:26he receives the breath of life and
9:29becomes comes a living Soul a nephesh a
9:31living being okay so Adam goes from dirt
9:36to life because of the animating power
9:38of the Breath of God and John wants us
9:42to see that the same God that breathed
9:45life into Adam is here in the flesh his
9:48name is Jesus and he's breathing on the
9:50disciples so they can receive the Holy
9:52Spirit also the other thing that you
9:55need to know here is that the word for
9:58breath with and and spirit are exactly
10:01the same okay in Hebrew it's uh and in
10:04Greek actually these ideas are all
10:07interconnected so they all have the same
10:09word and so in Greek that word is Numa
10:12Numa uh breath wind spirit so the breath
10:18that Jesus that uh Yahweh breathes on
10:22Adam animates him give turns him into a
10:25living being but then Jesus breathes on
10:28them and what do they get the Holy
10:30Spirit okay which means that for the
10:33believer for the New Testament believer
10:35for the Christian that
10:38living with the power of the holy spirit
10:41is just as vital to our life as breath
10:46okay in the same way that it is
10:48impossible to be a living person without
10:52breath in your lungs it is impossible to
10:55live as a Christian without the holy
10:58spirit of God animating us energizing us
11:01empowering us invigorating us so that we
11:04can obey the word of the Lord okay so
11:08we're going to get we get all these
11:10links okay uh so I probably gave you
11:14five six nerdy nuggets in a row I mean
11:16we got context we got nerdy nuggets um
11:19we got links everywhere okay John is
11:22telling us about a new genesis and he's
11:25saying that this new creation is here
11:28it's broken into the world world that
11:30Jesus has been planted like a seed in
11:32the earth and that he's come out of the
11:34Grave here's another nerdy nugget okay
11:37the resurrection is why Christians
11:39worship on Sunday instead of Sabbath
11:42thing on Saturday if any 7th Day
11:44Adventist try to like convince you that
11:47Saturday is the day that we should
11:48worship blah BL blah blah just let them
11:50know no Jesus rose on the J Rose in the
11:52grave on
11:53Sunday and Christians since Jesus's
11:56resurrection have been worshiping on
11:58Sunday be because Jesus rose in the
12:00grave and we believe that every week is
12:03Easter we're celebrating Resurrection
12:05every Sunday we want people to come to
12:08life in Christ every single Sunday we
12:10want Lazarus to come out of the Grave
12:12every single Sunday we want people that
12:14are in dead religion and dead marriages
12:18and dead relationships and in in dead
12:21debt to death to to to come out of their
12:24graves every single week we want people
12:26to make decisions for Christ we want
12:28Resurrection power in our churches every
12:31single week so uh early Christians
12:34definitely made a cognizant effort or
12:38intentional decision to switch their day
12:40of worship from Saturday to Sunday
12:42because of what happened on that Sunday
12:46where Mary goes to the Grave thinking
12:49that she's going to anoint the body of
12:51Jesus but finds a mysterious figure who
12:56she rightly and wrongly thinks is is uh
13:00the gardener Bible Department family my
13:02brand new book crushing chaos is out and
13:05the trailer is fire but you don't have
13:08to take my word for it you can watch it
13:10for yourself right

13:16now yeah what if I told you Dragons Were
13:21Real for the original audience of
13:25Genesis Dragons Were a common symbol
13:28that represented Chaos Dragons were
13:32normal in the ancient world and so were
13:35the deities that conquered them the
13:38Babylonian god named Marduk conquered
13:40the dragon named Ki the Egyptian sun god
13:43named ra had a conquer a dragon called
13:46apep in the Canaanite god that many of
13:48us know from the Old Testament named
13:51Baal had to conquer a seven-headed
13:53dragon named loton so when the original
13:56audience of Genesis heard about a least
13:59tempting Adam and Eve in the garden they
14:02wouldn't have pictured a slithering
14:04snake oh no they would have pictured a
14:07ferocious chaos Dragon the original
14:10audience would only have one question
14:13who's going to conquer this Dragon
14:16Yahweh will not conquer this Dragon
14:20Yahweh is not like any of the other gods
14:23he is not like Marduk he is not like ra
14:26or B he has no rival he has no
14:29the dragon is not his adversary to
14:31conquer but Adam and Eve's adversary to
14:34conquer by partnering with chaos they
14:37became the beasts they were called
14:39conquer who will conquer the dragon
14:42Jesus crushed the head of the Dragon who
14:45tempted Adam and Eve but the monster in
14:47the mirror still lives and I want to
14:50invite you to tame the Beast Within and
14:53to partner with God in subduing and
14:57ordering the cosmos most around you the
15:00only question left is this how do we
15:03crush the chaos that we've
15:14become last thing okay here's our
15:16Timeless truth is we're going to
15:18actually compare chapter 1818 with John
15:22chapter 21 vers 9 we're going to compare
15:24John 1818 with John 21:9 so if you want
15:27to grab those we're going to see one
15:29word repeat two times uh this the only
15:32time in the entire Bible where we're
15:34going to see these words okay the author
15:37John the author of this gospel wants us
15:41to link these moments okay uh it says
15:44this verse 18 of chapter 18 now the
15:47servants and officers had made a
15:49charcoal fire because it was cold and
15:52they were standing and warming
15:54themselves Peter also was with them
15:56standing and warming himself so when
15:59Peter denies Jesus there's a charcoal
16:01fire I don't know if you've ever smelled
16:04a charcoal fire very distinct charcoal
16:07has a very distinct smell to it um I
16:11don't know if you've ever like smelled
16:13something and it brought you back into
16:14time I remember you know there's like I
16:18there's there's certain smells that I
16:19smell I'm like oh I'm back at my
16:20grandparents house or like you smell
16:22something and you're like oh yeah man
16:25like my girlfriend from like college had
16:29that perfume like it immediately brings
16:30you back right um smell is connected to
16:35memory and so Peter denies
16:38Jesus three times at a charcoal fire and
16:43had Jesus not pursued
16:47Peter it's a wrap I mean Peter's sin is
16:50worse than that of Judas there's no way
16:53that Peter is reinstating himself but
16:56Jesus comes after Peter and says this
16:58and verse 9 of chapter 21 when they got
17:01out on land they saw a charcoal fire in
17:04place with fish on it and bread Jesus
17:07said to them bring some of the fish that
17:10you have just caught so Simon Peter went
17:13aboard and haul the boat ashore okay so
17:17Jesus has intentionally built what a
17:19charcoal
17:20fire not to remind Peter of his guilt
17:23but to recreate the scene and to bring
17:26this moment of the denial back to his
17:28memory but then to replace the memory
17:31with a new memory of that same smell
17:35that now I'm going to forgive you and
17:39commission you and what am I going to
17:41commission you to do Peter feed my sheep
17:44feed my Lambs okay take care of my sheep
17:47I'm going to commission you to be a good
17:48shepherd and in the same way that you
17:51denied me three times I'm going to
17:53commission you three times with three
17:57distinct but overlapping assignments
18:01take care of my sheep feed my Lambs feed
18:03my sheep uh so Peter gets a three-fold
18:06commissioning because there was a
18:08three-fold denial and Peter gets it oh
18:12he gets it Jesus has made a charcoal
18:15fire and it smells exactly like it
18:18smelled the night that I denied him and
18:21for Jesus in any moment past this where
18:25Peter smells the charcoal fire he does
18:27not want Peter to remember his mistake
18:30or his failure or the moment that he
18:31denied Jesus he wants uh Peter to
18:34remember the moment that Jesus forgives
18:37commissions and sends him out to
18:40actually be a Shepherd uh that
18:43represents him all right so we got
18:46context flues man we got a lot of nerdy
18:49nuggets we got a whole lot of those
18:51today and we got a Timeless truth what's
18:53the time's truth God redeems memories he
18:56gives you new memories and he always
18:59commissions there there's a lot of us
19:01who would think man Peter should have
19:03like you know a season of discipline
19:05like you know like sit him down for a
19:07little while I I came from a church that
19:09would like sit people down nothing wrong
19:11with sitting people down but for Jesus
19:12there's no timeout there's no getting
19:15sat down it's it's go time okay I've
19:18trained you uh and now I'm commissioning
19:21you to be the leader that you're called
19:23to be and um you have to believe that
19:26you're forgiven and the word of
19:29forgiveness follows the action of
19:32commissioning okay so there's not
19:34separate things for Jesus forgiveness is
19:37commissioning and I think there's a lot
19:38of Christians
19:40who have gotten commissioned by Jesus to
19:43be active to go do something to go serve
19:47to volunteer to be on staff to
19:50evangelize to witness to whatever
19:52whatever that fell in the blank is and
19:54because of guilt and because of Shame
19:57you haven't actually done what Jesus
20:00commissioned you to do and so our time's
20:02Truth for the day is to remind you that
20:04you are commissioned and wherever
20:06there's been a charcoal fire of shame we
20:09want there to be a charcoal fire of
20:10forgiveness whatever that moment is then
20:14we want the power of God to come into
20:17your life and to begin to um make things
20:21new like for you so I pray that over you
20:25there have definitely been moments in my
20:27life where God has done that for me uh
20:30I've not always gotten it right not at
20:32all uh I get it wrong a lot actually and
20:35I've needed the forgiving power of Jesus
20:38uh to forgive me but then remind me that
20:41my mistakes have not disqualified me
20:43from the call and that I'm still called
20:46and that this God is gracious enough to
20:48not just forgive me but to commission me
20:50out into a world that needs people who
20:53have made mistakes because Grace is not
20:55a concept or an idea to live the
20:57experience and I'm able to communicate
20:59that Grace when I'm able to tell people
21:01hey I denied it yeah I I he got
21:05crucified and I wasn't even there I can
21:07imagine Peter telling the story but then
21:09telling the story of how Jesus sought
21:11him out Jesus redeemed his memories
21:15Jesus brought healing and Jesus did not
21:17revoke the commission and the call in
21:20his life but actually pushed him into
21:22his purpose even when he probably didn't
21:24believe in himself so with that we end
21:29John's gospel and now we move tomorrow
21:32into John's epistle so we're going to
21:34get into first John tomorrow for day uh
21:3973 72 days down if you're on a streak
