1:43go family welcome to day 71 we are
1:47almost through the entire Book of John
1:50uh today we got like I mean if there's
1:52like thick reading just like dense
1:55content dense material it's today all
1:58right we've got the farewell
2:00discourse and I'll talk about that in
2:03just a second we got John 14- 17 St 71
2:06if you haven't done the reading for
2:08today time out pause get out of here go
2:11do the reading for today come on back
2:14I'm not going nowhere pause the
2:16recording pause the video pause the
2:17audio go do the reading read John
2:19chapter 14 15 16 and 17 read those four
2:23chapters and come on back for all of us
2:26that have done the reading for today
2:28this is just dense dense dense content
2:31uh because it's discourse material we
2:34Dive Right into our context clue okay
2:36remember how I said sevens are a big
2:38deal for John's gospel okay there are
2:41seven signs there are seven I AMS uh I
2:44may or may not have said this already
2:45but there are seven feasts that Jesus
2:48attends so the feasts are a big big big
2:51deal in John's gospel and there are
2:54seven discourses or seven blocks of
2:57teaching and a lot of time like uh in
3:00Matthew and Mark and Luke in the
3:02synoptic tradition a lot of these blocks
3:04of teaching are happening kind of like
3:06via a sermon so like a Sermon on the
3:08Mount or like a sermon on the plane for
3:10John A lot of these discourses are
3:13actually happen happening
3:15conversationally right so there's the
3:16Born Again discourse where he's talking
3:19to Nicodemus uh John does this really
3:22really good job of not just presenting
3:24Jesus as like an order or a public
3:26figure but there are these like
3:28one-on-one moments so him and Nicodemus
3:30have this prolonged one-on-one
3:32interaction and then the woman at the
3:34well that's a discourse the block of
3:36teaching it would be like the living the
3:38Living Water discourse now obviously
3:41there are times where Jesus is you know
3:43communicating to crowds of people we get
3:45seven discourses and remember John is a
3:48new genesis okay so the miracles of
3:52Jesus in John's gospel are doing are
3:55accomplishing the exact same thing that
3:58Yahweh accomplished in Genesis chapter 1
4:01bringing order to chaos that's what the
4:03Miracles are doing that is what the
4:05person of Jesus is doing which is why
4:06there are seven I am statements because
4:08the person of Jesus the identity of
4:10Jesus is for the purpose of bringing
4:14order to chaos bringing New Creation
4:16okay and Jesus's teaching is going to do
4:20the same thing the lessons of Jesus the
4:23words of Jesus the truth of Jesus the
4:26wisdom of Jesus the lessons that Jesus
4:28is going to give in these seven
4:30discourses are accomplishing the exact
4:34same thing that Yahweh accomplished in
4:36the original creation which is to bring
4:38order to chaos so it Jesus in the New
4:42Testament is not like up to something
4:44new no it's the same project that Yahweh
4:48started that the enemy thwarted that
4:50Adam and Eve did not participate in it's
4:52that same project that God was on in
4:56Genesis 1 Genesis chter 3 has Direct
4:59railed that project and Jesus is here to
5:02get that project back on Mission so um
5:06we're going to get a massive discourse
5:08this is the farewell discourse I want us
5:10to think about this this block of
5:13teaching as the temple training the next
5:16Temple okay the disciples are going to
5:19be temples of the Holy Spirit the church
5:22is going to become living stones made
5:25into a building or made into a temple
5:27okay so what we see in acttion chapter 2
5:30is the fire of the Holy Spirit uh
5:33falling on the group of Christians the
5:36same way that the fire of God fell on
5:39the Tabernacle and the temple in the Old
5:41Testament and so this is the temple
5:43Jesus is the temple he's uh the a portal
5:47that leads to the presence of God he is
5:50it's why when the veil in the actual
5:54Temple was when Jesus died when his
5:57flesh was pierced the veil in the temple
5:59was also torn because the veil in the
6:01temple is simply a type and Shadow of
6:04the person of Jesus so Jesus is the
6:07temple okay and he's training Peter and
6:10John and Matthew and the rest of the
6:13gang on how they are going to operate as
6:17temples so this if you can think about
6:18this whole block of teaching as a
6:21farewell discourse this is Jesus's last
6:24uh block of teaching we're still in the
6:26Passover we're still at this third and
6:28final Passover and now the temple uh
6:32made flesh is teaching these new temples
6:36how to actually be temples okay so
6:40there's going to be a couple of themes
6:42that are going to emerge in this section
6:45of John's gospel hopefully I'm giving
6:47you some good like context clues for
6:49like deciphering through like this
6:51content First theme is going to be the
6:55person of the Holy Spirit okay in John
6:58chap 14 we're going to get a big
7:01teaching on the helper the paraclete um
7:05the comforter okay that Jesus is going
7:08to promise the Holy Spirit and I think
7:12that sometimes uh without context we
7:15assume that the Pinnacle that the climax
7:19of God's dealing with humans is Jesus's
7:22death uh in Resurrection on the cross
7:25however if that's all we had we would
7:28still be on tiptoe like waiting for
7:30something else to happen because the Old
7:33Testament is not just promising a savior
7:36it is it's promising a messiah but the
7:38Old Testament also communicates that the
7:41reason that God's people have not been
7:43able to obey God's law it's not cuz the
7:46law is bad it's because people don't
7:48have the spirit of God to empower them
7:52energize them rejuvenate them and
7:55actually cause them to obey the law so
7:57the Old Testament is actually saying ye
8:01is we're supposed to leave the Old
8:02Testament longing for messiah longing
8:06for savior but we're also supposed to
8:08leave the Old Testament longing for the
8:09Holy Spirit and Jesus and the Holy
8:11Spirit become the right and left hand of
8:14God the reason that Jesus goes to the
8:17cross for the remission of our sins the
8:21reason that the blood of the Lamb has to
8:23be applied to my life so that I'm no
8:26longer guilty before God but innoc sent
8:30is because this Temple has to get
8:34cleansed by the blood so that it can get
8:36filled with the spirit cleansed by the
8:39blood so that it can get filled with the
8:42power of the Holy Spirit the cross
8:45serves a purpose the cross is a means to
8:49an end and that end is intimacy with God
8:53now we we are living in a kingdom that
8:56is already but not yet and so the in the
8:59king I've I have experienced intimacy
9:01with God because the Holy Spirit dwells
9:03on the inside of me but I'm also longing
9:06for it to be completed in the future
9:10that it's happening already but there's
9:12also a not yet part and that portion of
9:15the promise that is not yet is that one
9:18day oh we will really be with him we'll
9:21see the Lord face to face and so this
9:24deposit this down payment that we have
9:27called the Holy Spirit is promising that
9:30one day we will experience physical
9:32Resurrection we'll be in the new heaven
9:34we'll be in the new Earth and we'll
9:36experience the glory and the presence in
9:38the kingdom of God not as a spiritual
9:41reality that we can discern but as a
9:43reality reality that we won't just live
9:46based on our five senses but we'll have
9:50some more senses some additional senses
9:53where we are able to actually tap in to
9:56things that are happening spiritually at
9:58a complete different level so massive
10:01theme on the Holy Spirit okay holy
10:04spirit that that there's a promise that
10:07Jesus is making to his followers that
10:10they are going to receive the holy
10:13spirit that this is a big deal not like
10:16an after this is not the credits on the
10:19movie this is a big deal that the cross
10:21is accomplishing for the believer an
10:25ability to access the cleansing power of
10:27the blood of God for for what purpose so
10:30that we can be cleansed the Holy Spirit
10:33couldn't dwell within Believers prior to
10:37Jesus going to the Cross um because we
10:40were not fit temples to uh house the
10:44power and the presence of the holy
10:46spirit Bible Department family my brand
10:48new book crushing chaos is out in the
10:52trailer is fire but you don't have to
10:55take my word for it you can watch it for
10:57yourself right now
11:03yeah what if I told you Dragons Were
11:08Real for the original audience of
11:11Genesis Dragons Were a common symbol
11:15that represented Chaos Dragons were
11:18normal in the ancient world and so were
11:21the deities that conquered them the
11:24Babylonian god named Marduk conquered
11:26the dragon named kimon the Egyptian son
11:29god named Rob had to conquer a dragon
11:32called apep and the Canaanite god that
11:34many of us know from the Old Testament
11:36named Bale had to conquer a seven-headed
11:39dragon named loton so when the original
11:42audience of Genesis heard about a beast
11:45tempting Adam and Eve in the garden they
11:48wouldn't have pictured a slithering
11:50snake oh no they would have pictured a
11:53ferocious chaos Dragon the original
11:56audience would only have one question
11:59who's going to conquer this Dragon
12:02Yahweh will not conquer this Dragon
12:06Yahweh is not like any of the other gods
12:09he is not like Marduk he is not like ra
12:12or B he has no rival he has no equal the
12:16dragon is not his adversary to conquer
12:18but Adam and Eve's adversary to conquer
12:21by partnering with chaos they became the
12:24beasts they were called to conquer who
12:26will conquer the dragones Jesus crushed
12:29the head of the Dragon who tempted Adam
12:31and Eve but the monster in the mirror
12:34still lives and I want to invite you to
12:38tame the Beast Within and to partner
12:40with God in subduing and ordering the
12:44cosmos around you the only question left
12:47is this how do we crush the chaos that
12:51we've become
13:01chapter
13:0213:34 um Jesus is going to give a
13:04command okay it's a nerdy nugget and
13:06he's going to say a new command I give
13:09you love okay uh I'll actually read it
13:13to you chapter 13:34 it says this a new
13:16command I give to you that you love one
13:20another just as I have loved you and
13:22also you also are to love one another by
13:25this all people will know that you are
13:26my disciples if you love one another
13:29okay so new command I give you guys love
13:31one another here's a nerdy nugget in the
13:34ancient world love is not an
13:37emotion okay I know we understand love
13:41today in our current culture as a
13:44feeling as an emotion oh man I feel
13:47affection towards you I Feel Love
13:49towards you that is not Jesus's
13:51worldview he does not care if uh you
13:55know if Andrew and James personalities
13:58mesh he does not care if they click or
14:01if they have chemistry he does not care
14:05if he doesn't care about their feelings
14:08this is not this not about their
14:10feelings that for Jesus love is a
14:13decision of the will love is not up to
14:17whether I'm in a good mood love is a
14:19decision of my will and the reality is
14:21that not only do you need that kind of
14:23love in order to walk in a Christian
14:26Community but you need that kind of love
14:28for marriage I don't always feel
14:31romantically like in Love sometimes I'm
14:35just like no love is the decision of my
14:36Wills I'm going to make a decision to
14:39love my wife and that love is found in
14:43service that love is found in Pro in
14:46provision that love is found in all
14:48types of things whether I feel it or not
14:51and we have a lot of people who are
14:53walking in a marriage for their
14:54happiness and they really need to choose
14:57to be married for their holiness that
14:59what what love of the will does is it
15:03actually sanctifies you makes you more
15:05like God God loves you regardless of how
15:10you treat him or what you do to him
15:13because for the Lord love is not a
15:15feeling love is a decision of the will I
15:18love my son do I have so many warm and
15:22awesome feelings towards my son of
15:25course I do but I also just have a love
15:27of the will I don't like changing this
15:29man's diapers his poop smells bad he's
15:33turning three now and he's got like his
15:35attitude's a little weird and he we're
15:37learn we're you know we've been potty
15:39training him and he makes mistakes and
15:42he pees on the floor and I I mean like
15:45if it was just about my feelings there
15:47are times where I feel like when he
15:51throws a temperature at I feel like just
15:54leaving him home by himself like but I
15:56don't do what I feel like doing I've
15:58made a decision I've made a decision of
16:00my will and love is a decision of the
16:03will this is now we're going to
16:04transition into our time's truth Jesus
16:06has a prayer in chapter 17 verse 20 uh
16:10we can actually go there and I'll read
16:11it to you and if we're not careful when
16:14it comes to our definitions of Love Will
16:16essentially create churches with people
16:18we like right so your whole Christian
16:21Community will just be people that you
16:23have shared interests with shared
16:25political opinions with you'll just
16:27essentially choose a church or pick a
16:29church with people that you feel like
16:31you fit in with and at the end of the
16:33day uh that's is not Christian Community
16:36okay that's not discipleship for Jesus's
16:39original followers there's a tax
16:41collector in the crew and a zealot in
16:43the crew these two people are
16:45diametrically opposed to each other all
16:47right a zealot is like a black panther
16:49and a tax collector is like an Uncle Tom
16:52and Jesus is like yeah but you both are
16:53going to follow me and you're going to
16:55love each other the same way I've loved
16:57you I don't care if you don't agree I
16:59don't care if you don't like each other
17:01I don't care if you get along doesn't
17:03really matter to me you're going to make
17:05a decision of your will to act in love
17:08towards one another because love is not
17:10a feeling love is a decision of the will
17:14that is evidenced by action Behavior
17:18okay 17 uh verse 20 okay it says this is
17:22our Timeless Truth for the day uh
17:24chapter 17 verse 20 I do not ask so this
17:27is a long prayer
17:29okay by Jesus like all of chapter 17 is
17:31essentially like a really really long
17:33prayer uh that Jesus prays he says this
17:36I do not ask for these only but also for
17:39those who will future tense who will
17:42believe in me through their word so this
17:45is Jesus praying for us it's pretty dope
17:48that Jesus is praying for future
17:49Believers okay uh while he's at the Last
17:52Supper uh teaching his uh disciples how
17:55to be the temple that they may all be
17:59one just as you father are in me and I
18:03in you that they also may be in us so
18:07that the world may believe that you have
18:09sent me this is twice now where there's
18:12something that that the disciples or or
18:16the future Church supposed to do the
18:18first is love one another and then this
18:20one is be one walk in unity and what's
18:23the purpose so that it would reflect
18:26well on the person of Jesus
18:29that wild I want you to act in love so
18:34the world may know that you're my
18:35disciples I want you to be one so the
18:38world may see when they look at you I
18:41want the world to actually see me and my
18:43father I want the world to see a picture
18:45of the unity that exists in the godhead
18:47that is actually the weight of this
18:50prayer that I I want you to do this not
18:54because you like your your brother
18:59again has nothing to do with like your
19:01personal feelings and here's where we're
19:04going to go back to this prayer for the
19:05Holy Spirit I think there's a lot of us
19:08who speak in tongues but we speak in
19:09English really mean and what happened at
19:12the day of Pentecost the tongues of fire
19:14come down and people are able to hear
19:18the gospel in their language because
19:20it's a reversal of Babel Babel was the
19:23moment where God dispersed the languages
19:25and created confusion Acts chapter 2 is
19:28a moment where there's Supernatural
19:31Unity the holy spirit is not just
19:34supposed to give us the ability to speak
19:35in tongues and prophesy and work
19:37miracles and have signs and wonders but
19:40really the biggest Miracle is that the
19:42Holy Spirit would bind us together with
19:43chords of love that can't be broken that
19:45we become one that we become United
19:48because anyone who's ever walked on a
19:51team or on a staff knows that Unity is
19:55difficult is difficult everybody has
19:57their own agenda everybody has their own
19:58ideas everybody has their own plan and
20:00to all mesh together in unity not
20:04uniformity but Unity true diversity
20:07that's United that's Unity okay not
20:10uniformity not that we all become clones
20:13not that we all become mindless drones
20:16just submitting to whatever the leader
20:17says we're not a cult we're a church and
20:20the church highlights the
20:22diversity of everyone but also everyone
20:25says we're here for a common Vision
20:27we're here uh under a common mandate and
20:31and when we want to be God's tangible
20:35presence um of of the kingdom of God and
20:39so um we want Kingdom culture to really
20:42Define who we are as a people and so we
20:46rally together around that okay so our
20:48Timeless Truth uh for the day is that
20:51Jesus was praying for us and so we need
20:53to take Jesus's prayer to heart and we
20:55need to start praying for Unity for
20:57Supernatural Unity that that the Holy
20:59Spirit would bind us together with
21:01chords of love that can't be broken that
21:03we will be people who model Supernatural
21:05unity and so I want you to begin to
21:07think how can I do that in a small way
21:10and then how can I expand that Unity so
21:12can I be one with my spouse can can I
21:15create Unity just in my family can I
21:17create Unity with like my closest
21:19friends and then in bigger and bigger
21:21and bigger hey can I create Unity on my
21:23staff hey can I create Unity on the
21:25teams that I oversee everything that you
21:28have a hand in influencing I want you to
21:30think man am I adding to the unity or
21:33taking away am I adding to the unity or
21:35taking it away is my
21:37individualism hindering the cohesion of
21:40the group nothing wrong with me having
21:43individual gifts but you know what man
21:45there's some things it's better to die
21:48to my individual rights because I want
21:51the group to move forward I want to be a
21:54group oriented thinker I want to be a
21:56group oriented leader my friend br was
21:58telling me about uh being on staff at
22:01Union Church and he was saying man
22:03Pastor Ste there are things that Pastor
22:05Steven doesn't really need to do but he
22:07still does it because people who are
22:10following him need to do it right so
22:12there's a system for how to MC and you
22:15write everything out like if you're
22:16doing the offering or if you're doing
22:19announcements you you literally write it
22:21out you got to submit it and then you
22:22you do a run through and you practice
22:25and like Pastor stepen doesn't need to
22:26do that I mean he's a world-class
22:28community indicator but he knows that if
22:31he doesn't submit his individual gift to
22:36the culture of the team then he's giving
22:38some young 25-year-old who doesn't have
22:41that same level of gift he giving him an
22:43excuse to cut corners and so I will
22:46abide by the rule I won't live by the
22:49exception it's the same reason why I
22:51went back to school to get my doctorate
22:52it's why I got into a master's program
22:55yes it adds value to me but I was
22:57successful without it but I feel like
23:00I'm setting a precedent for everyone
23:02coming after me for young people who
23:05look up to me so you have to as a gifted
23:08person as a leader submit the things
23:11you'd be able to get away with you have
23:13to submit that to the confines of the
23:17discipline that's necessary not just for
23:20you but for the for the people who are
23:22modeling their behavior after you and
23:24that is really really significant that's
23:25my Timeless Truth for the day hey
23:28tomorrow we got the end of John's gospel
23:33we got a lot obviously we got the death
23:36burial and resurrection of Jesus in
23:38these final chapters I'll see you
23:40tomorrow on Day 72 of our journey to the
23:43Bible this year uh we're going to start
23:44in John chapter 18 we're going to end in
23:47John chapter 21 I'm so proud of you if
23:49you have a streak going don't break that
23:51streak I'm so so proud of you I'll see
