1:43go family let's get into Day 70 welcome
1:47to Day 70 uh we are in John chap 11 12
1:52and 13 I say this every day you haven't
1:54done the reading go get out of here
1:56scram go do the reading okay read John
1:59chap 11 12: 13 and then come back I'll
2:02be here I'm not going anywhere okay uh
2:04John 11 12: 13 seriously this is a
2:08pivotal uh point in the book okay John
2:10chap 1 through 11 uh marks like one one
2:16half of the book and now we get Jesus uh
2:19in Jerusalem once we hit chapter 11 the
2:22book really like pivots okay um so and
2:26and here's kind of what what's happening
2:28we're getting into context clues all
2:30right in the synoptic tradition okay the
2:34thing that gets Jesus arrested is his
2:38assault on the temple okay his his uh
2:42clearing of the temple uh he's got cords
2:45braided together as a whip he's turning
2:47over tables I mean he has a strong
2:49condemnation against the temple in
2:52John's gospel that is going to happen at
2:55the very beginning of Jesus's Ministry
2:57not at the end okay for Matthew Mark and
2:59Luke now is it possible that Jesus did
3:02this two times sure that's possible
3:04however as you'll probably find out if
3:07you're like on this not just the Bob
3:09reading plan Journey but if you're a
3:11subscriber and watching our courses we
3:13want to
3:14steer clear of trying to harmonize the
3:17gospels each gospel account is ah I I'm
3:21so careful to use this word is
3:24manipulating details so that they can
3:26teach a theological truth okay and so
3:30the way we Define truth is not the
3:34definition for truth okay the way that
3:36people in the west Define truth is how
3:38factually accurate something is in the
3:41Greco Roman worlds and even in the
3:43ancient near Eastern world that's just
3:45not their definition for truth is not
3:47factual accuracy their definition for
3:49truth is like does it create wisdom and
3:52is it is it theologically true and so
3:55there's going to be tons of details
3:57throughout all four Gospels and a
4:00Westerner is going to really try to like
4:03harmonize these things so like which
4:05one's factual and the reality like which
4:08genealogy is right is it Matthew's
4:11genealogy or Luke's genealogy and it's
4:13like uh they're both communicating a
4:17different theological Point both
4:19theological points are true okay um the
4:22Roman soldier that's at the cross next
4:24to Jesus says something very different
4:26in Luke's gospel versus Mark's gospel
4:29which one 's right they're Luke is
4:32putting certain words in that Roman
4:34soldier's mouth and those words are
4:37communicating truth a theological truth
4:39and Mark is putting certain words in
4:41that Roman soldier's mouth in Mark's
4:42gospel and it's communicating
4:44theological truth I want you to think
4:46about this kind of like if you were to
4:49read let's say the parable of the
4:51Prodigal Son no one would ask like well
4:54how old is the older son and how old is
4:56the younger son and what are their names
4:58these are facts that don't matter the
5:00these these facts are in almost
5:03insignificant and they are insignificant
5:05we don't get them there are there is no
5:07transmission of those facts in the text
5:09what is the truth the truth is that the
5:12father is gracious and loving and
5:14merciful what is the truth the truth is
5:17that the older brother represented by
5:18the Pharisees and the religious leaders
5:21are full of Pride and don't really
5:25understand um the grace and the mercy of
5:27the father and the truth is that the
5:30younger brother always has a home to
5:32return to those those things are the
5:35truth the facts of how old are they and
5:38what are their names and what village do
5:39they live in these facts are pale in
5:43comparison to how important the truth of
5:45the theology is okay I know I'm kind of
5:48on a on a soap box just a little bit but
5:51in John's gospel the cleansing of the
5:54temple is something that happens at the
5:55beginning of his ministry and the
5:57Temptation is to try to like ah
6:00did it happen twice you know that's a
6:03western urge that you feel that that's
6:06not like some just objective human urge
6:09this is a western urge you you want to
6:11harmonize because of the worldview that
6:14we all have like been baked in since the
6:18time we were zero till right now um and
6:21you have to be enough aware of your
6:24worldview to understand your biases and
6:26your Tendencies and so that's why I'm
6:29kind of bringing light to it okay in
6:31John's gospel it is not the cleansing of
6:34the temple that gets Jesus arrested it
6:36is not the cleansing of the temple that
6:38makes the religious leaders kill him
6:40that's not the thing that kind of Sparks
6:43everything in John's gospel it is the
6:45raising of
6:46Lazarus that is the thing that makes the
6:50chief priests and the elders and the
6:51Pharisees and the Sadducees like we got
6:54to get rid of this guy okay and so the
6:57the raising of Lazarus is a pivot in the
7:00whole book once we get to Jerusalem the
7:04tone and tenor of the whole book is now
7:06changed what Lazarus is the last sign
7:10and once we get to Lazarus there are no
7:11more signs except the sign that the
7:14raising of Lazarus is actually
7:16foreshadowing which is the resurrection
7:18of Jesus so this is a big question why
7:22does Jesus weep even though he knows
7:23he's going to raise Lazarus from the
7:24dead um a cuz he's human B CU Lazarus
7:29his friend and then see because he's
7:33trusting that the father is going to
7:35raise Lazarus there's a interdependent
7:38relationship between God the son God the
7:40father and God the Holy Spirit and so
7:42what I think happened like in my holy
7:45imagination okay what I think happened
7:47is that Lazarus is sick Martha and Mary
7:51alert Jesus that Lazarus is sick and I
7:54think that Jesus being obedient to the
7:58Holy Spirit and being obedient to the
8:01father does not go see about Lazarus
8:03Lazarus then dies to which I Think Jesus
8:06is experiencing a real human emotion
8:08that he's disappointed that Lazarus has
8:10died just because he has the power to
8:13raise someone from the dead or the power
8:15to heal does not mean that he's free to
8:16do that okay Jesus is living in
8:20submission to the will of the father and
8:22the power of the Holy Spirit and I think
8:25that the the Lord gives him a green
8:28light to raise Lazarus from the dead and
8:31I think really it's a message obviously
8:34to us and to Mary and Martha but really
8:36it's a message to Jesus that the same
8:39way that God was faithful to raise
8:42Lazarus from the dead that he'll be
8:43faithful to raise Jesus from the dead
8:45okay I think this is not something gets
8:47talked about a lot that Jesus is having
8:49to operate in faith that Jesus is having
8:52to trust that he's not crazy he's not a
8:55crazy person he's having a trust that
8:57his identity the thing that that he
8:59believes about himself is actually true
9:01that he really did empty himself of his
9:04divinity Philippians chapter 2 that he
9:05humbled himself and became bound to this
9:08Human Condition to humanity and so the
9:12power this is the reason that Jesus can
9:14say you'll do greater Miracles why
9:16because he's saying I'm just modeling
9:18for you what it is like for a human to
9:20be fully submitted to the Holy Spirit
9:23and fully submitted to the father so of
9:26course you're going to do miracles of
9:28course you're going to to raise the dead
9:30and heal the sick because I'm modeling
9:33what it is like to be human I'm
9:35redefining Humanity for you I think that
9:38is what's happening remember okay just
9:40let this kind of sink in for you and I
9:44we know Jesus as God like that's how we
9:46met him okay we sing worship songs to
9:49Jesus at church I mean we know Jesus as
9:51God the biggest revelation of our time
9:53will be Jesus knowing Jesus as human
9:56it's fully human and most heresies
9:59especially in the early church
10:01especially
10:02gnosticism they did not um have an issue
10:05with Jesus's Divinity or his deity they
10:08had an issue with his Humanity it's it's
10:10the humanity of Jesus that was offensive
10:13um for the disciples they have the
10:15reverse Revelation for the
10:18disciples they are very aware of Jesus's
10:21human that's how they meet Jesus that's
10:22how they encounter Jesus he's a human
10:25and they have to become they have to
10:26receive a divine revelation that this
10:29this human that they've been interacting
10:30with is not only a human but is God
10:34right if if Peter saw God walking on the
10:36water I don't think he would have gotten
10:37out of the boat but Peter didn't see God
10:39walking on the water he saw a human
10:42walking on the water he saw a man
10:43walking on the water a man that he
10:44shared meals with a man who he knows
10:47goes to the bathroom a man who he knows
10:50gets dressed in the morning a man a
10:51human being he saw a human being walking
10:53on the water and therefore he walked in
10:55the water I think a lot of times the
10:58reason that we are stuck in whatever
11:00boat we're in is because we're really
11:03unaware not of the Divinity of Jesus but
11:06of the humanity of Jesus because it is
11:08the humanity of Jesus that actually
11:09inspires us to follow in his footsteps
11:12let's get into some nerdy nuggets okay I
11:16hope that's really really helpful
11:18there's a lot of push back in the
11:19Christian world with Jesus being human
11:22and I think it's because we have an
11:23issue with Humanity period I think it's
11:25why we feel uncomfortable talking about
11:27sex like in Christian circles I think
11:30humanity is just something that like we
11:33have this gnosticism inside of us that
11:35just does not like humanity and so we
11:38have a problem with Jesus's Humanity but
11:40it is actually his Humanity that is the
11:42hope of our species like that that is
11:46everything uh if he's not human
11:49then then we're screwed like that's just
11:52the end of it like it's humanity is
11:55something that has to be retained and
11:57taught and platformed and and and
11:59preached okay let's get into some nerdy
12:02nuggets uh so Lazarus is going to be the
12:04thing there's all these links with The
12:06Story of Lazarus and Jesus's own
12:08Resurrection I think that for Jesus the
12:11raising of Lazarus is proof to him that
12:15God will all also be faithful of course
12:18Jesus is the conduit that is Raising
12:20Lazarus from the dead but is the power
12:22of the Holy Spirit and submission to the
12:23father that is at work to raise Lazarus
12:26from the dead in the person of Jesus
12:30and so I think that he weeps a cuz he's
12:33a human he weeps B cuz he's a friend but
12:37he also weeps because it's it's it's a
12:40it's him exercising faith in God the
12:44father and the person of the Holy Spirit
12:46and anytime you are dependent or
12:49interdependent on someone and then you
12:52know you realize you can trust them I
12:54think that elicits emotion and so I
12:56think that for Jesus he realizes I can
12:59trust I can go to the cross and believe
13:02that I will be Vindicated that the
13:04father will raise me from the dead and
13:06throughout the Book of Acts the language
13:07that gets used is not that Jesus raised
13:10himself from the dead but that the
13:12father raised him from the dead that the
13:14Holy Spirit raised him from the dead um
13:16that's trust it's a lot of that's that's
13:18a trust fall on on a thousand Bible
13:21Department family my brand new book
13:23crushing chaos is out and the trailer is
13:27fire but you don't have have to take my
13:29word for it you can watch it for
13:31yourself right

13:36now yeah what if I told you Dragons Were
13:42Real for the original audience of
13:45Genesis Dragons Were a common symbol
13:49that represented Chaos Dragons were
13:52normal in the ancient world and so were
13:55the deities that conquered them the
13:58Babylonian god named Marduk conquered
14:00the dragon named tiami the Egyptian sun
14:03god named ra had to conquer a dragon
14:06called apep in the Canaanite god that
14:09many of us know from the Old Testament
14:11named ba had to conquer a seven-headed
14:13dragon named loton so when the original
14:16audience of Genesis heard about a beast
14:20tempting Adam and Eve in the garden they
14:22wouldn't have pictured a slithering
14:24snake oh no they would have pictured a
14:27ferocious chaos dragon
14:29the original audience would only have
14:32one question who's going to conquer this
14:35Dragon Yahweh will not conquer this
14:39Dragon Yahweh is not like any of the
14:42other gods he is not like Marduk he is
14:45not like ra or Bale he has no Lial he
14:48has no equal the dragon is not his
14:51adversary to conquer but Adam and Eve's
14:54adversary to come by partnering with
14:56chaos they became the beasts they were
14:59all conquer who will conquer the dragon
15:03Jesus crushed the head of the Dragon who
15:05tempted Adam and Eve but the monster in
15:07the mirror still lives and I want to
15:11invite you to tame the Beast Within and
15:14to partner with God in subduing and
15:18ordering the cosmos around you the only
15:21question left is this how do we crush
15:24the chaos that we've become
15:35let me give you some nerdy nuggets this
15:38entire like today and tomorrow I mean we
15:42are in Passover okay let's go to chapter
15:4611 uh we're going to go to chapter 11:55
15:50chapter
15:5111:55 uh it says this now the Passover
15:54of the Jews was at hand and many went up
15:57from the country it's like Galilee
15:59Nazareth like the country the outskirts
16:02um rural areas to Jerusalem the city
16:06before the Passover to purify themselves
16:08they were looking for Jesus and saying
16:10to one another as they stood in the
16:12temple what do you think that he will
16:14come to the Feast at all now the chief
16:16priest and the Pharisees had given
16:19orders that if anyone knew where he was
16:22they should let them know they might
16:24arrest him okay so this is following
16:26lazarus's raising the chief priest are
16:30are you know they are going to arrest
16:32Jesus like it's game over that's the
16:34Passover Passover starts at 11 the the
16:37end of chapter 11 get this chapter 12
16:41chapter 13 chapter 14 chapter 15 chapter
16:4616 chapter 17 okay I want you to read
16:50chapter 18 verse1 when Jesus had spoken
16:54these words he went out with his
16:56disciples across the Kidron Valley where
16:59there was a garden so that's that now we
17:03transition from Passover to the Garden
17:04of Gethsemane okay chapter 12 13 14 15
17:0916 and 17 all Passover content which
17:14means that the majority of the Book of
17:16John is concerned with the Passover and
17:20why because Jesus is the Fulfillment of
17:22Passover remember what John the Baptist
17:24says at the as soon as he sees Jesus the
17:27lamb that takes away the sins of the
17:29world Behold the Lamb of God that takes
17:32away the sins of the world okay and so
17:35this Passover is going to dominate in
17:39terms of just biblical real estate we're
17:41going to get chapters upon chapters upon
17:43chapters dedicated to what's happening
17:46at this final Passover now next nerdy
17:49nugget in John's gospel there are three
17:52Passover which is the only reason we
17:55know that Jesus had a three-year public
17:58Ministry is because he attends three
18:02Passover this if it's not for John's
18:05gospel we're clueless as to how long
18:08Jesus's Earthly public Ministry even
18:10lasted but the reason that we know that
18:12Jesus's public Earthly Ministry lasted
18:14for three years is because we get three
18:16Passover in John's gospel and this is
18:19the third and final Passover in John's
18:23gospel and uh it is very very
18:25significant because this is when the
18:29symbol or the sign or the type and
18:34Shadow of the Passover in the Old
18:36Testament uh is actually going to be
18:39fulfilled now here's something that I
18:41encourage every Christian to do is to go
18:43to a Passover seder go to a traditional
18:46Jewish Passover seder I remember the
18:48first time Dr Marvin Wilson um who was
18:51my Old Testament Professor Gordon
18:52College took me and our whole class to a
18:56traditional Passover a Jewish Passover
18:59Sader like at a synagogue and it was
19:02amazing it was incredible and uh it'll
19:06give you so much context around what in
19:09the world is is even happening why do we
19:12have bread and wine as the symbols of
19:14communion because the communion is just
19:17going to be recycled images from the
19:21Passover okay this is Jesus fulfilling
19:26these symbols of Israel so next nerdy
19:28nugget in John
19:3113:23 the last supper was potentially
19:33held at John's house okay the author of
19:35the book of John because Jesus sat at
19:38his side which is often where the guest
19:41of honor sat okay so John if it's John's
19:45house and Jesus is the guest of honor
19:47that actually makes sense like the
19:49placement of where Jesus actually sits
19:52it also makes sense that Jesus would
19:54give his mother to John okay remember at
19:57the cross Jesus is gonna say you know
20:00Mary this is now your son and this is
20:02now your mom to John and I wouldn't give
20:07my mom to anybody who like didn't have a
20:10house and a and you know like wealth
20:12like I think I think that Jesus is you
20:15know handing his mother off to be cared
20:17for uh and putting them in the care of
20:19somebody who has means to actually do
20:21that uh that doesn't mean that John is
20:24wealthy or rich or whatever but it it I
20:27do think that John is probably probably
20:32not as young as the other as the other
20:34disciples okay um there and there's
20:37scholarly debate back and forth about
20:39the age of the disciples that's there's
20:41lots of reasons why people go back and
20:43forth uh that's not the here or there
20:45okay our Timeless Truth for the day
20:48actually comes out of chapter 13 chapter
20:5213 Jesus starts to clean the disciples
20:54feet and it's always wild to me okay so
20:58this is happening like at the final
20:59Passover at the Last Supper it's crazy
21:02to me that Jesus washes the feet of of
21:06Judas and
21:08Peter Peter who's going to deny him and
21:10Judas who is going to betray him that
21:13Jesus knows knows that these men are
21:17disloyal like rats and still washes
21:21their feet man um and I think that's a
21:25challenge to me that like do I do well
21:28at
21:29leading the Peters in my life and
21:32judases in my life that Jesus is not
21:35Petty that Jesus serves and loves
21:39individuals who are bent on
21:42disappointing him denying him betraying
21:46him um and I think that sometimes we
21:49have this like I don't know I think that
21:51we can be a little petty and Jesus is
21:54the total opposite of petty so my
21:56Timeless Truth for the day is simply
21:58that like don't be Petty like Jesus
22:00washes the feet of people who are going
22:04to hurt and offend him at a deep deep
22:09deep level and um I think that sometimes
22:13because we're not in tuned to the
22:15humanity of Jesus we kind of like brush
22:18this stuff off you know as if um of
22:21course but he's Jesus and I I think
22:25that's the danger when we only emphasize
22:28the deity of Jesus and we're not in tune
22:30with the humanity of Jesus so Jesus
22:33washing feet is hugely impactful to me
22:37and it's not just that he washes feet
22:39it's whose feet he washes and the fact
22:42that he would wash feet of
22:45men who just ain't loyal um and that
22:50there's so much talk in church that just
22:52doesn't seem to match the Heart of Jesus
22:55towards those who don't have his best
22:58interest in mine I've sat through
23:00Leadership Lessons you know and just
23:05heard people you know you better be
23:07careful you know that person is is not
23:10loyal and and it's like man
23:14but are we are we trying to
23:18like save ourselves grow Our Brands or
23:22are we trying to be like Jesus and I
23:23think that's a hard question that we
23:25have to really ask but I think the text
23:26is asking us to ask that question so
23:29that's my Timeless Truth for the day hey
