1:43go family welcome to day 69 we're in
1:47John chapters 8
1:49through1 uh and oh it's a good day I'm
1:53so excited okay because Jesus is at uh
1:56he's at the Feast of Tabernacles Al the
1:59otherwise known as the Feast of booths
2:01and uh a tabernacle is a booth so if
2:04that makes sense okay well a tabernacle
2:06is a tent and what the Jewish people
2:09would do during the Feast of Tabernacle
2:11is create these little booths to kind of
2:13reenact the days where they lived out in
2:15the wilderness okay leaving the leaving
2:18Egypt okay on the route of the Exodus
2:21like going out to the Wilderness okay so
2:23uh we're in John chapter 8 and10 but
2:25we've got to kind of talk about John
2:27chapter 7 a little bit so even though
2:29our reading the day is John chapter 8
2:30and 10 John chapters 7-1 is actually a a
2:34block of teaching that's in John's
2:36gospel and some days you know the
2:39reading plan and the actual text of
2:41scriptures like really line up in terms
2:43of the blocks but it's fine we'll dip
2:45back if you haven't done the reading
2:47today go ahead and make sure you read
2:48John chapters 8 through1 uh so that
2:52everything that we're talking about will
2:53make sense uh this platform is not
2:56designed to be a substitute okay for you
3:00actually reading the Bible we want it to
3:02be a supplement to you reading the Bible
3:03so um go and do the reading if you have
3:06done the reading guys let's dive into
3:10John chapters 89 and 10 I'm super
3:13excited all right so John chapter 7
3:15verse one it says this I'm just going to
3:19read it straight out of my Bible uh John
3:21chapter 7 verse1 says after this Jesus
3:24went about in Galilee he would not go
3:27about in Judea because the Jews were
3:30seeking to kill him now the Jews Feast
3:33of Booth uh was at hand so his brother
3:36said to him leave here and go to Judea
3:39that your
3:40disciples Also may see the works you are
3:42doing for no one works in secret if he
3:45seeks to be known openly if you do these
3:47things show yourself to the world for
3:49not even his brothers believed him so
3:51they're not saying this with good
3:52intentions they're saying this cuz
3:53they're freaking jerks he says he's not
3:56going to go uh his brothers go up to the
3:58feast in verse
4:0010 uh it says this in verse 10 it says
4:04but after his brothers had gone up to
4:06the feast then he also went up not
4:09publicly but in private okay so we get
4:12Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles and
4:14Jesus is going to be at the Feast of
4:16Tabernacles all through chapter 7 all
4:18through chapter 8 all through chapter 9
4:20all the way up to chapter 10 verse 21 um
4:24so we got a lot and then chapter 10: 22
4:29it says at that time the Feast of
4:31dedication took place in Jerusalem okay
4:33so this is Hanukkah okay so Jesus goes
4:36from one Feast right to another in terms
4:39of um like the narrative flow of the
4:41Book of John and so all of this content
4:44from chapter 7 uh all the way to 10:21
4:49Jesus is at the Feast of Tabernacle so
4:51in order to have context for what's
4:53going on in this chunk of scripture like
4:56in terms of these passages we really
4:58have to understand what is the Feast of
5:01Tabernacles okay so first thing you need
5:03to know is that the Feast of Tabernacles
5:05I'm just going to go ahead and read out
5:07of the dictionary of Jesus and the
5:09gospels which behind me somewhere uh I
5:12think it's I think it's like right there
5:16is a the dictionary of Jesus and the
5:18gospels yeah it is it's the second book
5:20right there uh dictionary of Jesus and
5:22the gospels says this the Feast of
5:24Tabernacles uh was the most important
5:26and well attended pilgrimages even more
5:29than Passover okay so the Fe of
5:32Tabernacles is a big big big big deal
5:34feas of Tabernacles is going to
5:36celebrate or commemorate three things
5:39okay number one they're all from Exodus
5:42by the way okay think Tabernacle okay
5:45the construction of the Tabernacle
5:46happen in the book of Exodus so the
5:48Feast of Tabernacles is really centered
5:50around uh the book of Exodus in the
5:53events of the Exodus okay so three
5:56things that the Feast of Tabernacles is
5:58going to celebrate number one
6:00is water from the rock okay uh remember
6:04uh there's the miracle of water coming
6:08out of a rock uh number two is going to
6:11be the giving of the Divine name in
6:13Exodus chapter 3 where the the name
6:16Yahweh gets revealed okay I am that I am
6:19and number number three number one water
6:22from the rock number two the giving of
6:24the Divine name number three the pillar
6:27of fire and Cloud that accompanied
6:31Israel as they left Egypt these are the
6:34three events that are celebrated at the
6:36Feast of Tabernacles now how did they
6:39celebrate this stuff well great the way
6:43they celebrated water from the rock
6:45remember they're standing out in the
6:46desert okay it's hot in terms of the
6:49calendar year this would be like dry
6:51season okay so this is like everyone's
6:54naturally thirsty you're out in you're
6:56out in the hot sun and the
7:00priests would take water from the pool
7:03of salom and bring it to the temple it's
7:06like this massive Water Festival and
7:08start dumping out water to to reenact or
7:12to commemorate the miracle of God
7:15providing water from The Rock when they
7:17were out in the wilderness this is the
7:19context okay you can read about this in
7:22Exodus chapter 17 verses
7:261-7 like if you're tracking that's think
7:29about this okay in the middle of that
7:34Jesus is going to say if anyone is
7:38thirsty okay so now Jesus is going to
7:41use what's happening as like a
7:44demonstration for a revelation of his
7:47identity when you know like the backdrop
7:50of actually what's happening at the
7:52festival or at the feast Jesus's words
7:55boom I mean it's like click light bulb
7:57moment I remember the first time I
7:59realized oh what Jesus is saying is not
8:02random or arbitrary um Jesus's words
8:07here are highly contextual and then
8:11obviously Jesus promises right um if
8:13anyone would put their faith in him that
8:16they would have living water that they
8:18would have Living Water um bubbling over
8:21from the inside that from their belly
8:23would flow rivers of Living Water all
8:26right let's actually now move to the
8:29second thing that was celebrated was the
8:30giving of the Divine name uh this is
8:32rooted in Exodus chapter 3 and this is
8:35God saying to Moses I am that I am well
8:38guess what we have in in John chapter
8:408:24 8:28 and 858 we have Jesus saying
8:45multiple times like before Abraham was I
8:48am okay so in the middle of a festival
8:51where they're celebrating the giving of
8:53the Divine name which is I am that I am
8:56Jesus is going to say I am okay I am I
9:00am I am this happens three times John
9:03chap 8:24 John chapter 8:28 and John
9:07chap
9:08858 uh and the last thing that would
9:10have happened would was going to be uh a
9:13reenactment or a celebration of the
9:15pillar of cloud and fire the root for
9:18this is Exodus chapter 13 okay so so far
9:21we've celebrated or reenacted Exodus
9:23chapter 17 Exodus chapter 3 and now
9:25we're going to get Exodus chapter 13
9:28celebrated or reenacted in the Feast of
9:31Tabernacles and here's how the Jews
9:33would celebrate the pillar of fire um
9:36they would put on this spectacular light
9:38show to symbolize how Yahweh LED them
9:40out of Egypt uh you'd have these huge
9:42Manas and you'd have like torch dancing
9:45the high priests the chief priest um
9:48would all uh do these like elaborate
9:50torch dances also in everyone's Booth
9:54like throughout Jerusalem um they would
9:57get these little like land LNS okay and
10:00so in the middle of this okay um Jesus
10:05says I am the light of the
10:09world once you realize that like oh it's
10:14an illustrated seron like although we
10:17just don't know the illustrations okay
10:20all we have is Jesus's words we're not
10:23understanding that there's context for
10:25like why Jesus is choosing to say the
10:27things that he's saying okay so that
10:29that's all of our context clues not only
10:31did I give you one context clue I give
10:32you three for today because there's
10:34three things that the Feast of
10:35Tabernacles really celebrates and
10:38naturally leads into um this next thing
10:41so like let's think about it let's think
10:44you know you're at this Feast of
10:45Tabernacles everybody's leaving their
10:46house tons of pilgrims somebody's bound
10:49to end up in the wrong bed with somebody
10:52John chapter 8 uh opens and honestly
10:55this is like one of my favorite stories
10:57in the entire Bible the scribes and the
10:59Pharisees brought a woman who had been
11:01caught in adultery and placing her in in
11:05the midst they said to Jesus teacher
11:07this woman has been caught in the act of
11:09adultery now the law of Moses commands
11:11us to Stone her such women what do you
11:15say this they said to test him that they
11:19might have some charge to bring against
11:21him Jesus bent down and wrote with his
11:25finger on the ground now I've heard a
11:28lot of sermons of about what Jesus could
11:30have possibly wrote with his finger in
11:32the ground let me give you my hunch for
11:37what I Think Jesus actually wrote in the
11:39ground I think that Jesus would have
11:41written the passage of scripture in the
11:42ground okay that seems like something
11:44Jesus would do and let's go to the
11:46passage of scripture that I Think Jesus
11:48would have written into the ground it's
11:50Deuteronomy 22:22 because remember they
11:54are saying that the law of Moses they're
11:56quoting the law of Moses to Jesus I
11:58think he knows the law of Moses better
11:59than they do okay uh it says this in
12:02Deuteronomy
12:0422:22 which is what I Think Jesus is
12:08writing in the ground okay I also think
12:10he would have written down Leviticus
12:1220:10 but we'll go to Leviticus after we
12:14uh read Deuteronomy Deuteronomy
12:1722:22 if a man is found sleeping with
12:20another man's wife both keyword both
12:25both the man who slept with her and the
12:28woman must die you must Purge the evil
12:32from Israel so who's supposed to get
12:34stoned the man and the woman who do they
12:38bring only the woman so I think Jesus is
12:41beating them at their own game because
12:43remember they want to bring a charge
12:44against him they want to bring a legal
12:46charge against Jesus for breaking Torah
12:48so what does Jesus write in the ground
12:50he writes Torah okay what does Leviticus
12:53uh chapter 20:1 say says this if a man
12:56commits adultery with another man's wife
12:59with the wife of his neighbor both
13:02keyword both the
13:04adulterer and the
13:06adulteress are to be put to death and so
13:10what have the chief priests done they've
13:12broken Torah that's what they've done
13:15they've broken Torah by only bringing
13:17the woman clearly she's not committing
13:19adultery by herself she wasn't caught in
13:22the act of adultery by herself she's
13:25caught in the act of adultery with
13:27someone and they don't bring the guy if
13:30you caught the woman in the ACT where's
13:32the dude clearly the guy's there he's
13:34present and they chose not to bring him
13:37which platforms it literally platforms
13:41their sexism their misogyny okay uh now
13:46I'm all about patriarchy I actually
13:48think we need a Resurgence of patriarchy
13:50but when patriarchy begins to be
13:52misogynistic uh this is why people have
13:54a bad taste in their mouth when it comes
13:56to patriarchy so I'm all about
13:58patriarchy I'm I'm a patriarch like I I
14:00believe that it's my responsibility to
14:03protect my wife and my son and our
14:06future children and provide for them and
14:08protect them and be present um be a
14:10priest for my home I'm a patriarchy I
14:12believe that it's my job to secure
14:14property and and wealth and and and all
14:18that for my family for my son for our
14:20future children like I'm all about it
14:23but the moment the patriarchy begins to
14:26oppress women well now we have a problem
14:28and in society we don't typically
14:31correct we overcorrect I think we're
14:33seeing an overcorrection and I hope we
14:35don't overcorrect in the opposite way I
14:37hope we don't just keep swinging from
14:38pendulum to pendulum to pendulum like I
14:41hope at one point we stop the
14:43polarization and just get to balance
14:45intention Bible Department family my
14:47brand new book crushing chaos is out and
14:50the trailer is fire but you don't have
14:53to take my word for it you can watch it
14:56for yourself right now
15:02yeah what if I told you Dragons Were
15:07Real for the original audience of
15:10Genesis Dragons Were a common symbol
15:14that represented Chaos Dragons were
15:17normal in the ancient world and so were
15:20the deities that conquered them the
15:23Babylonian god named Marduk conquered
15:25the dragon named tiami the Egyptian sun
15:28god named ra had to conquer a dragon
15:31called apep in the Canaanite god that
15:33many of us know from the Old Testament
15:35named Bale had to conquer a seven-headed
15:38dragon named loton so when the original
15:41audience of Genesis heard about a beast
15:44tempting Adam and Eve in the garden they
15:47wouldn't have pictured a slithering
15:49snake oh no they would have pictured a
15:52ferocious chaos Dragon the original
15:55audience would only have one question
15:58who's going going to conquer this Dragon
16:01Yahweh will not conquer this Dragon
16:05Yahweh is not like any of the other gods
16:08he is not like Marduk he is not like ra
16:11or Bale he has no rival he has no equal
16:14the dragon is not his adversary to
16:16conquer but Adam and Eve's adversary to
16:19conquer by partnering with chaos they
16:22became the Beast they were called
16:24conquer who will conquer the dragon
16:27Jesus crushed the head of the Dragon who
16:30tempted Adam and Eve but the monster in
16:32the mirror still lives and I want to
16:35invite you to tame the Beast Within and
16:39to partner with God in subduing and
16:42ordering the cosmos around you the only
16:45question left is this how do we crush
16:49the chaos that we've become
17:00let me get off my Soap Box what do I
17:02Think Jesus is writing I think
17:04context would suggest he's he wrote
17:07Deuteronomy 22:22 he wrote Leviticus
17:1120:10 because how do they respond they
17:13drop their stones and they leave because
17:15I think they realize there's no legal
17:18charge to act to Stone The Woman these
17:20two passages of scripture are actually
17:22the only thing to me that really makes a
17:25lot of sense then uh we're going to get
17:27into John 10
17:29which Jesus in John 10 is going we're
17:32going to get these famous verses about
17:35the Good Shepherd okay is going to get
17:37contrasted with the thief that comes to
17:39steal kill and destroy now here's what
17:41we love to do in church we take this
17:42verse out of context and we act like
17:44it's talking about the devil the reality
17:46is not talking about the devil okay when
17:48the Bible says that the thief comes this
17:49is verse number 10 John 1010 the thief
17:54comes to steal and kill and destroy I
17:55come that they may have life and have it
17:58abundantly I am the Good Shepherd the
18:01Good Shepherd lays down his life for the
18:03Sheep now the reason that people
18:05interpret this as talking about the
18:07devil is because they don't understand
18:09the context of the passage this our
18:11nerdy nugget by the way uh for the day
18:14and it is Ezekiel well really our nerdy
18:17nugget was what did Jesus write in the
18:19dirt so our context was the three key
18:22events from The Exodus that get
18:24celebrated or reenacted in the Feast of
18:26Tabernacles that's our context clues our
18:29nerdy nugget is what Jesus wrote in the
18:31dirt and I'm adding in an an an extra
18:34nerdy nugget could who when I go to
18:36Chick-fil-A and and I
18:38order eight nuggets or six nuggets and
18:41and there's an extra nugget in there I'm
18:43not mad you know what I'm saying ain't
18:44nobody mad about extra nugget so our
18:46extra nugget is we're going to go to
18:48Ezekiel chapter 34 Ezekiel chapter 34
18:52and once I read just a couple of verses
18:54you'll get like why we needed to go to
18:57Ezekiel CH 34 here's what it says I'm
18:59going to read it from my iPad Ezekiel
19:01says this uh the word of the Lord came
19:03to me son of man prophesy against the
19:05Shepherds of Israel Shepherds whoa
19:07didn't we just read in John chapter 10
19:09that Jesus is saying he's the Good
19:10Shepherd contrasted with these thieves
19:13ah maybe there's a clue here okay uh
19:15prophesy against the Shepherds of Israel
19:16prophesy and say to them this is what
19:18the Sovereign Lord says woe to you
19:20Shepherds of Israel oh this is not good
19:22who only take care of
19:23yourselves should not Shepherds take
19:25care of the flock you eat the curse CS
19:29curds are produced by the Sheep clothe
19:31yourselves with the Wool Wool taken from
19:33the Sheep Slaughter the choice animals
19:35but you do not take care of the flock
19:37you take care of yourselves you don't
19:38take care of the flock okay you have not
19:40strengthened the weak or healed the sick
19:42or bound up the injured you don't you're
19:44not caring for the ones that aren't
19:45valuable to you you have not brought
19:48back the Strays or searched for the loss
19:50you have ruled them harshly and brutally
19:52so they were scattered because there was
19:54no Shepherd my sheep wandered blah blah
19:57blah verse 7 therefore you Shepherds
19:58hear the word of the Lord as surely as I
20:00live declares The Sovereign Lord because
20:02my flock lacks a shepherd and so has
20:05been
20:06plundered and has become food for all
20:08the wild animals and because my
20:10Shepherds did not search for my flock
20:11and cared for themselves rather than my
20:15flock therefore you Shepherds hear the
20:16word of the Lord this is what the
20:18Sovereign Lord says I'm against the
20:20Shepherds and will hold them accountable
20:21for my flock I'll will remove them from
20:23tending the flock so that the Shepherds
20:25can no longer feed themselves I will
20:28rescue my flock from their mouths and it
20:31will no longer be food for them wait a
20:35second so who is the thief that comes to
20:38kill steal and destroy oh it's these
20:41evil Shepherds from Ezekiel chapter 34
20:43who are the evil Shepherds from Ezekiel
20:45chapter 34 religious leaders who should
20:48be acting like good Shepherds but
20:50instead are acting like thieves which
20:52means when we get to John 10:1 who's the
20:55thief that comes to steal kill and
20:56destroy ah Church leader
20:59who feed themselves on the tithe and
21:02offering and money that people give in
21:04church who care more for themselves than
21:08they do the people who don't care for
21:11the sick or the broken or go after the
21:14Strays of the lost it's pastors and
21:17leaders and church staff who would
21:20rather line their own pockets and have
21:23selfish interest than be sacrificial and
21:26lay down their lives and die die for
21:29God's people yeah it's easier to believe
21:31it's about the
21:32devil because once it's about me now I
21:36have to look in the mirror and ask God
21:38am I being a thief am I being a good
21:41shepherd because Jesus doesn't just say
21:43he should be the only Shepherd he's
21:45saying this is the model that's a
21:47presedent when Jesus reinstates Peter at
21:51the end of The Book of John he's going
21:53to say to Peter feed my Lambs feed my
21:55sheep he's going to instate Peter now an
21:58unders sheeper as someone who is
22:00supposed to Shepherd the flock like
22:02Jesus shephered shephered the flock John
22:0610:1 not about the devil now can it get
22:09applied to the devil sure the devil does
22:12steal the devil does kill the devil does
22:15destroy okay but pastors and leaders who
22:19spiritually abuse people that's also
22:22what they do okay and so this verse when
22:27you put it into context actually is
22:30saying something that is really
22:32challenging okay so what's our Timeless
22:34truth Timeless truth is pretty easy
22:37today are you the thief are you being a
22:39thief that comes to steal kill and
22:41destroy or are you following the Good
22:43Shepherd I think for every pastor and
22:45every leader uh if you are in Ministry
22:48if you get a check if you get any form
22:51of payment from a church you're the
22:53audio engineer if you're the graphic
22:55designer I don't care what you do at a
22:56church you need to ask yourself the
22:57question people's tithe people's PE
23:00there are people tithing off of welfare
23:02checks tithing off of their unemployment
23:04check there people people are tithing so
23:07that I get paid is God going to hold me
23:10accountable as a thief am I a thief or
23:14am I a good shepherd that's our timless
23:16truth for the day and that's all the
23:18time we got hey guys man talk about a
23:23solid day 69 tomorrow we got Day 70
23:26we're going to jump into John chapters
23:2811 12 and 13 obviously I'll be here to
23:31guide us on that Journey I'm so proud of
