- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible
- 0:13department.com to download a reading
- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 351.
- 0:27We are trekking through Chronicles
- 0:31aka 1st Chronicles because we've split
- 0:33it into two because of the modern
- 0:36English translations. But anyway, 1
- 0:38Chronicles chapter 16, 17, and 18 is on
- 0:41the docket today. If you've done the
- 0:44reading, then you're going to understand
- 0:45everything that I'm going to say on
- 0:46today's episode. But if you haven't done
- 0:48the reading, this is my gentle nudge to
- 0:51stop the video, pause the audio, go get
- 0:53the reading done, read 1 Chronicles
- 0:56chapters 16-18. I think that it'll add a
- 0:59lot of value to you as you engage with
- 1:02God's word. And like every day, I've got
- 1:05so much content. I've got a lot to say
- 1:07today. I'm going to give you some
- 1:09context. And to be honest, the context
- 1:12is pretty easy. Um, and so I'm going to
- 1:14take this opportunity to kind of go back
- 1:17and give you some context that I should
- 1:18have given you a couple days ago, but
- 1:20the context of these chapters is the
- 1:22exact same as yesterday. All right, this
- 1:25is the continuation of the procession of
- 1:27the ark into Jerusalem and it is being
- 1:30set up in the tent that David has
- 1:33provided. It is then the context of
- 1:35seeing the ark in the new tabernacle
- 1:37that inspires David's temple dream.
- 1:40Okay, he wants to build for God a
- 1:43permanent house. Okay, so everything
- 1:45that happened yesterday or on
- 1:47yesterday's episode in 1 Chronicles
- 1:50chapters 13-15, those are all the events
- 1:53that are the context for today's
- 1:55episode. Okay, so because the ark has
- 1:57been brought back into Jerusalem, uh
- 2:00because there is now a central place of
- 2:02worship, now that is causing David to in
- 2:06chapter 16 begin to say these words.
- 2:09They brought the ark of God and set it
- 2:11inside a tent that David had pitched for
- 2:13it. And they prepared burnt offerings
- 2:15and fellowship offerings. Okay? And
- 2:17David is going to appoint Levites and
- 2:19he's going to appoint singers and he's
- 2:20going to sing a psalm. And then in
- 2:23chapter 17 says this, after David was
- 2:25settled in his palace, he said to Nathan
- 2:27the prophet, "Here I am living in a
- 2:29house of cedar while the ark of the
- 2:31covenant of the Lord is under a tent."
- 2:34Okay, so this is a great place to just
- 2:36remind everybody that in the Bible when
- 2:39we say the word tabernacle, that word
- 2:41just means tent. Okay, so the tabernacle
- 2:45that Moses received the instructions for
- 2:48the tabernacle was a temporary dwelling.
- 2:51It was a tent setup, tear down. You
- 2:54could move it anywhere. The temple will
- 2:56be a fixed building, a fixed structure.
- 2:59The exact same architectural designs,
- 3:02but one is temporary, one is permanent.
- 3:04Okay? So, it'd be like taking a mobile
- 3:08home, like a trailer, like a double wide
- 3:10trailer, and taking the exact same
- 3:12architectural designs, but making it
- 3:15permanent. Okay? So, we're just going
- 3:17from something that's mobile to
- 3:19something that is 100% a building, a
- 3:21fixed structure. That's it. same exact
- 3:24function, same exact dimensions, same
- 3:28exact architectural layout. All right,
- 3:31so that's the context. So the context
- 3:33for today is pretty pretty easy, which
- 3:36gives me the opportunity to kind of go
- 3:38back a couple of days and talk just a
- 3:41little bit more about genealogies. Okay,
- 3:42so if you remember the first three days
- 3:45of Chronicles, we spent on genealogies.
- 3:47From chapters 1 all the way to chapter
- 3:499, we just talked about genealogies. So,
- 3:52I've got four big ideas that I want us
- 3:54to know about genealogies. Okay? And
- 3:57these ideas, I mean, I think they're
- 3:58pretty well organized. They may feel a
- 4:00little bit all over the place. So, the
- 4:02first one may feel like a little bit of
- 4:03a curveball, but number one, the purpose
- 4:06of of a genealogy is to give identity.
- 4:09Okay, identity. Now, you may or may not
- 4:13be familiar with the fact that black
- 4:16Americans in the United States of
- 4:17America predominantly like have a
- 4:21genealogical crisis like some because we
- 4:26were an enslaved group of people, there
- 4:28are gaps in records for like who a dad
- 4:34was or grandfather or great-grandfather.
- 4:36And so there can be lineage like just
- 4:39issues. Families got split up because of
- 4:42the institution of slavery and family
- 4:45units were completely destroyed. And so
- 4:48because there's a genealogy issue,
- 4:50there's this unique susceptibility
- 4:54that black Americans have to what I
- 4:56would call black identity cults. And
- 4:59these become really, really popular. So
- 5:02black Hebrew Israelites are not just a
- 5:04religious cult. That's an identity cult.
- 5:07And there are differences between a
- 5:09religious cult and an identity cult.
- 5:12Jehovah's Witness or Mormon, that's a
- 5:14religious cult. And this is just my
- 5:17observation as just being an American
- 5:20who's black who lives in the United
- 5:21States of America, is that I think our
- 5:24white counterparts typically struggle
- 5:26with religious cults, whereas black
- 5:29Americans typically stumble into
- 5:32identity cults. Okay? So, black Hebrew
- 5:34Israelites are essentially saying,
- 5:36"Black people are Jews, right? So, these
- 5:40people stole our identity and we are
- 5:43them." You know, it's like that
- 5:44Spider-Man meme where everybody's
- 5:46pointing at each other. And so, black
- 5:48Hebrew Israelites are going to claim
- 5:50that modern-day Jews are literally not
- 5:53Jews. That the Jewish people of the
- 5:56Bible were African, were black. Okay?
- 5:59And that Jewish people today stolen
- 6:02their identity. Okay? Okay, that's an
- 6:03identity cult. Now, of course, it's an
- 6:06identity religious cult, but it's still
- 6:08an identity cult. The thing that black
- 6:10Hebrew Israelites are praying on is
- 6:13black people's generally speaking
- 6:16feeling of like, I don't know who I am
- 6:19or who I belong to. I don't have this
- 6:21family tree that's like thoroughly
- 6:23mapped out. I can't go back 10
- 6:26generations and know who my people's
- 6:28people's people's people's peoples were.
- 6:31And because of holes in our
- 6:33genealological records, it makes us
- 6:36susceptible to identity cults. Another
- 6:38identity cult would be the Nation of
- 6:40Islam. I don't know if you realize this,
- 6:42but all throughout the 50s and 60s,
- 6:44you'd have people like Malcolm X or
- 6:46Muhammad Ali, who would do away with
- 6:50names that they would consider to be
- 6:52slave names, names that were given to
- 6:54them by masters and take on Middle
- 6:57Eastern names. Names like, you know,
- 6:59Muhammad Ali. But again, this is a group
- 7:03of people who are not Arabic essentially
- 7:06saying we're Arabic. So, not only So,
- 7:10now there's a whole group of people,
- 7:11black Hebrew, Israelites, who are saying
- 7:12we're Jews. It's like, no, you're not.
- 7:14You're black. You're not Jew. You're not
- 7:16a Jew. You're not Jew. You're not a Jew.
- 7:18But you don't know who you are. And so,
- 7:20here's a group telling you who you are,
- 7:23so you believe it. The same is true with
- 7:25the Nation of Islam. It's like, we're
- 7:27Muslims. No, you're not. And what
- 7:30happened with Malcolm X is he finally
- 7:31went to Mecca and realized we are not
- 7:36Muslim. And then he actually converted
- 7:37to true Islam, like actual Islam. But
- 7:40again, on the surface, this looks like a
- 7:42religious cult, but really it's an
- 7:44identity cult. Why is this appealing to
- 7:47a group of people that came out of
- 7:48slavery? It's appealing because if you
- 7:51don't know who you are, and someone
- 7:53begins to say, "We're Muslims." It's
- 7:56like, fantastic. I'd rather be a Muslim
- 7:58than confused. I'd rather be a Jew than
- 8:02confused. And so my like I'm black. So
- 8:06my people really do like we fall into
- 8:11these identity cult pitfalls. Okay?
- 8:14Whereas like Mormonism is not an
- 8:16identity cult. It's a it's a rel it's
- 8:18just a religious cult. But you can see
- 8:20the difference between Mormons are
- 8:22building a religious idea around
- 8:24doctrine. Whereas Hebrew Israelites and
- 8:28Nation of Islam are building religious
- 8:31ideology around identity, around race,
- 8:35around ethnicity, around nationality,
- 8:37around language. Like that's it's very
- 8:40very very different. All right.
- 8:41Genealogies are really, really
- 8:43important, especially in the Bible,
- 8:45because the Jewish people are coming out
- 8:48of Egyptian slavery and bondage. And so
- 8:53God's solution when people are coming
- 8:55out of hundreds of years of oppression
- 8:58and slavery is not just for them to
- 9:01wander around and start to find
- 9:03different identities. It's to give them
- 9:06a genealogy because in the genealogy you
- 9:10begin to get a narrative about your
- 9:12values and about your culture and about
- 9:15who you are. And so I think it's really
- 9:17powerful. I actually think Christianity
- 9:20is the best option, a for everybody, but
- 9:24it's the best option for anyone that's
- 9:27coming out of a historical context where
- 9:30there's been enslavement, where there's
- 9:33been a wiping away of of genealogy. I
- 9:37think it's important to say, "No, I have
- 9:40a spiritual heritage." Okay, that's just
- 9:42the first idea. Number two, when I said
- 9:44that genealogies have to do with rights,
- 9:47here's two practical examples. Because
- 9:50in Joshua, each tribe got land aotments,
- 9:53you could not buy land. If you were from
- 9:56the tribe of Benjamin, you couldn't buy
- 9:58land from a Reubenite. Okay? Because
- 10:01different tribes could not buy other
- 10:03tribes land. Okay? So, you could only
- 10:06sell land to someone who was of your
- 10:09same tribe. So, in order to buy a land
- 10:13in ancient Israel, you had to have your
- 10:15genealogy. You had to be able to prove,
- 10:18"Yeah, I'm from the tribe of Issachar."
- 10:20And these this land right here was given
- 10:23to the tribe of Issachar. Okay? Or, "I'm
- 10:26from the tribe of Dan or Naftali." Okay?
- 10:29You had to be able to prove your tribe
- 10:32in order to sell land to someone or buy
- 10:35land from someone. Okay? So that's just
- 10:37when I say genealogies have to do with
- 10:41rights, that's a practical example of
- 10:43what I mean. And three or four days ago,
- 10:46you may have been thrown off guard like
- 10:47what what like what is he talking about?
- 10:48Anyway, three, in order to serve as a
- 10:51priest, you had to be able to prove that
- 10:53you were a Levite. You had to be able to
- 10:55prove that. And in in the book of Ezra,
- 10:58what's happened is that there are all
- 11:00these Levites that because of the exile,
- 11:02they've lost their genealogical record
- 11:04and they're serving in the temple. Okay,
- 11:06this is before uh this is like uh Ezra
- 11:10Rubbable's coming back and before
- 11:12Nehemiah has come back. And one of the
- 11:14things that Ezra has to do is go through
- 11:17all the people who are serving in the
- 11:19temple and demand their genealogies. And
- 11:21if you can't prove beyond the shadow of
- 11:24a doubt that you're actually a Levite,
- 11:26you don't have the right to serve as a
- 11:28Levite because only Levites can serve in
- 11:30the temple. Okay. And then fourth, and
- 11:33that this actually most important, you
- 11:35couldn't claim to be the Messiah unless
- 11:38you had a genealogy done. With no
- 11:40genealogical record, you could not claim
- 11:43to be the Messiah. Which is why, let's
- 11:45think about this. The entire Old
- 11:47Testament is going to end with 2
- 11:49Chronicles, which has nine chapters of
- 11:52genealogy. And how does Matthew start?
- 11:55You guessed it, a genealogy. Okay? And
- 11:59if you compare the genealogy that we
- 12:02have in Chronicles to the genealogy that
- 12:04we have in Matthew, the author of
- 12:07Matthew aka Matthew is 100% proving
- 12:12through the genealogy that Jesus is the
- 12:15Messiah because that's what genealogies
- 12:17are designed to do. So the genealogy in
- 12:20Chronicles is going to go from creation
- 12:22to kingdom to captivity. Okay? So that's
- 12:25why it goes from Adam, okay, to David,
- 12:29David is the establishment of the
- 12:30kingdom up to captivity and then exile.
- 12:34Guess what? If you look at that pattern,
- 12:36you're going to see that in the book of
- 12:38Matthew. Matthew 1:1 17. Thus there were
- 12:4214 generations in all from Abraham to
- 12:45David, 14 generations from David to the
- 12:47exile, that would be captivity to
- 12:49Babylon, and 14 generations from
- 12:51captivity to the Messiah. So what
- 12:54Chronicles is saying is that we went
- 12:56from Adam to Abraham, Abraham and David,
- 12:59David to the captivity, and then
- 13:01captivity. Here we are now. We're back
- 13:03in ex we're back from exile are left
- 13:06kind of at a cliffhanger. And then
- 13:08Matthew literally picks up and he goes,
- 13:11"And guess what? Now the cliffhanger is
- 13:13done because we've completed the last
- 13:15piece of the genealogical puzzle." So
- 13:17all right, genealogies super super super
- 13:20important. like mad important. Like if
- 13:23you skip them while you're reading,
- 13:25you're essentially kind of just like not
- 13:28getting you're you're missing the plot
- 13:31and the genealogies are huge. All right,
- 13:33now let's get into some nerdy nuggets.
- 13:35All right, what if I told you that what
- 13:37you're learning in this video was just
- 13:39the tip of the iceberg? The Bible
- 13:41department is actually powered by Arma.
- 13:44What is Arma? I'm so glad you asked.
- 13:47Arma is an online subscription-based
- 13:49platform [music]
- 13:50that we designed to help people,
- 13:53everyday people, learn the Bible for
- 13:55themselves. We started Arma so that
- 13:57anybody anywhere could have access to
- 14:01trustworthy and entertaining Bible and

- 14:29nerding out on the Bible together. If
- 14:32you want a community to read the Bible
- 14:33with you this year, or if you want to

- 14:41access [music] to me and the entire ARMA
- 14:44team, how about you go to the bible
- 14:46department.com,
- 14:47I'll be sure to post the link in the
- 14:49description of this video. Let's make
- 14:52this your year to become a Bible nerd.
- 14:55Number one, the number one thing that is
- 14:58very very clear especially as we get
- 15:01into chapter 16 is that David is going
- 15:04to revolutionize worship forever. Okay,
- 15:07so 1 Chronicles 16 4 5 and 6. Okay, it
- 15:13says David appointed some of the Levites
- 15:15to minister before the Lord to extol,
- 15:18thank praise the Lord the God of Israel.
- 15:21And then it lists all the people that he
- 15:23does that to musicians and singers. This
- 15:26right here, like this moment in history,
- 15:29changes what we know as worship forever.
- 15:33Prior to this moment, no one is singing
- 15:35while offering sacrifices. This moment
- 15:38right here, David changes the job
- 15:41description of what it means to be a
- 15:43Levite forever. Period. Prior to this,
- 15:47Levites weren't, you know, it says that
- 15:50uh Asaf the chief and next to him in
- 15:52rank was Zechariah and Jeziel, Shemoth,
- 15:55Jeil,
- 15:57Matathiah, Eliabah, Banana, Obedam, Jel.
- 16:01They were to play the liars and harps.
- 16:04Asaf was to sound the symbols. And
- 16:06Banaya and Jeziel the priests were to
- 16:08blow the trumpets regularly before the
- 16:10ark of the covenant. That is just not
- 16:12what anyone was doing like that. That
- 16:16that is not that day David first
- 16:19appointed Asaf and his associates to
- 16:21give praise to the Lord in this manner.
- 16:23That's not what Levites were commanded
- 16:26to do like by Moses or Aaron or anybody
- 16:30else. This is David's idea. It's David's
- 16:33idea to say let's add some singing like
- 16:36let's let's add some music to this. Like
- 16:39essentially how I feel about musicals.
- 16:41I'm like, so instead of talking, they're
- 16:43just singing. You know, David is like,
- 16:45"AH, LET'S TAKE THIS MOVIE AND make it
- 16:47into a musical." Okay, that's David's
- 16:49idea. And guess what? We've kept it.
- 16:51We've kept it for 3,000 years. David is
- 16:54a th000 BC. He has a thousand years
- 16:56before Christ. And we've been we're now
- 17:00in 2,000 years post Christ. We've kept
- 17:03David's system for worship for 3,000
- 17:05years. Like the one dude completely
- 17:08revolutionized what we think about when
- 17:10we think about worship. Abraham said to
- 17:13his servants, "Me and Isaac are going to
- 17:14go up that mountain. We're going to
- 17:16worship. We're going to come back."
- 17:17David did not mean, "I'm going to go
- 17:18sing songs at the top of that mountain."
- 17:20That's not what David meant. He meant
- 17:21I'm going to go kill my son. That's what
- 17:23that's what I'm going to do. So forever,
- 17:26worship was sacrifice. And then worship
- 17:28was service. Okay? It's taking care of
- 17:32the articles of the tabernacle. [snorts]
- 17:33And it's David that adds singing. So if
- 17:36you want to know the triple S, service,
- 17:39sacrifice, and singing. David adds that.
- 17:42And he leads by example. 1 Chronicles 16
- 17:4623 to 20 to 34 actually has a whole well
- 17:52right here in verse 8. Actually, he
- 17:53breaks out in a psalm. But at verse 23,
- 17:58it's almost like there's a new psalm
- 17:59that starts uh singing to the Lord all
- 18:02the earth. proclaim his salvation day
- 18:03after day. What we have right here in
- 18:051st Chronicles 16 23-34, we're going to
- 18:09find that in Psalm 96, Psalm 105, and
- 18:13Psalm 106. So, not only is David going
- 18:16to revolutionize worship by delegating
- 18:19the task of singing to Levites, he's
- 18:21going to lead by example, which is going
- 18:24to get me into my timeless truth for the
- 18:26day. up. Then 1st Chronicles 17 mirrors
- 18:302 Samuel 7. David is thinking to
- 18:33himself, "Man, God lives in a tent. It's
- 18:36great that we've brought the ark of the
- 18:37covenant here to Jerusalem, but God's
- 18:39living in a tent. I live in a house.
- 18:41This is ridiculous." You can tell that
- 18:44when he tells Nathan his idea, Nathan
- 18:46agrees. Okay? Because David's idea is a
- 18:49good idea. And Nathan makes a terrible
- 18:52mistake as as a leader, as a prophet, as
- 18:56a voice of God. Nathan gut reaction just
- 18:59goes, "You should do that. That sounds
- 19:01freaking great." Okay. Chapter 17:2,
- 19:04Nathan replied to David, "Whatever you
- 19:06have in mind, do it for God is with
- 19:08you." But that night, the word of the
- 19:10Lord came to Nathan, saying, "Go and
- 19:11tell my servant David, this is what the
- 19:13Lord says. You are not the one to build
- 19:16me a house to dwell in." Which means
- 19:18sometimes as leaders we can agree and
- 19:21then assume to speak for God when God
- 19:24has not agreed. Okay? And this is you
- 19:26have to be careful. Nathan clearly
- 19:30personally thinks this is a fantastic
- 19:32idea. Also, God isn't like anti. He just
- 19:37says, "David, you're not the one." Like
- 19:39it's not you. Now, if we go all the way
- 19:42back to Deuteronomy 12:5, okay, there
- 19:45was always this inkling or this seed of
- 19:48an idea that God would at one point not
- 19:53just be in a tent, but would set up shop
- 19:56like in a building. Okay, it says this
- 19:58in Deuteronomy 12:5. But you shall seek
- 20:01the place that Yahweh your God will
- 20:04choose. Okay, so Yahweh will choose it,
- 20:06but you're going to seek it. I want you
- 20:08to seek the place that I'm going to
- 20:10choose. So you can even see right there
- 20:14a symbiotic relationship between us and
- 20:16God. You seek it, but I'm going to
- 20:18choose it. This that right there, that
- 20:21equation is so helpful for our spiritual
- 20:23reality. Faith and works. You seek, but
- 20:27God chooses. This right here is a key
- 20:31for how you should interpret your
- 20:33relationship with God. You should seek a
- 20:36wife, but God should choose the the the
- 20:38the person. Like it's not just like God
- 20:41told me who to marry. No, no, no, no,
- 20:42no, no. You seek, God gives a stamp of
- 20:46approval on it. God confirms. Okay? But
- 20:49you shall seek the place that Yahweh
- 20:51your God will choose out of all your
- 20:55tribes. So, so it becomes clear not
- 20:58every tribe is going to have the temple.
- 21:01Okay? to put his name and make his
- 21:04habitation habitation of his dwelling
- 21:07place, his house. There you shall go. So
- 21:10Deuteronomy 12:5 all all should let
- 21:13everybody know David's not just like out
- 21:16of God's will. Okay, David is seeking a
- 21:21place where God should habitate. And God
- 21:23then says, "Okay, I will say yes to this
- 21:28place, but you're not going to build
- 21:30it." Which gets us to why did God say
- 21:33yes to the place? He actually said yes
- 21:35to the place because he's saying yes to
- 21:37David. David's heart is what he's been
- 21:40looking for. God really wants to make
- 21:42his dwelling place right here in in in
- 21:46your heart. And finally, God finds a man
- 21:49by the name of David who while he's in a
- 21:51house thinks to himself, "Why isn't God
- 21:55in a house?" And so David's request
- 21:59pleases the Lord. But even though God is
- 22:01pleased, God will never be manipulated.
- 22:04So he doesn't change his answer just
- 22:06because what David says pleases him.
- 22:08David's heart is what he's been looking
- 22:10for. He chooses David. And now God says,
- 22:14"But I'm going to build you a house."
- 22:16And it's a double entandra. What he
- 22:18means is, "I'm going to build you a
- 22:19dynasty. I'll build you a house so that
- 22:22his house can build Yahweh's house." And
- 22:25this is probably the greatest no from
- 22:27God ever. God says no, but golly, God
- 22:31oneuped the Annie. He's like, not you're
- 22:35not going to build me a house, but I'm
- 22:36going to build you a house, and your
- 22:38house will build me a house. I'll build
- 22:39you a dynasty, and your dynasty is going
- 22:42to be the thing that will build me a
- 22:44house. Which gets me into my Thomas
- 22:46truth. If there's one thing I want to
- 22:48hear from God in my lifetime, it's this.
- 22:50I wrote it down in my notebook. No, not
- 22:54you, but your son. No, not you, but your
- 22:58son. Oh, man. That's my That's my heart
- 23:01as a dad. I've got so many ideas for the
- 23:05Bible department, for Arma, for Manny
- 23:07Rango Ministries, for books, for albums,
- 23:09for the garden, for businesses. Oh my
- 23:12gosh. And I want to be the kind of
- 23:14person that always inquires of the Lord.
- 23:15God, do you want us to do seven
- 23:18campuses? God, do you want us to expand
- 23:20outside of Texas? God, do you want the
- 23:22garden to be a church that, you know,
- 23:24spans from west coast to east coast?
- 23:27God, do you want us to do that? God, do
- 23:28you want us to do that? God, do you want
- 23:29us to do TV? God, do you want us to do
- 23:31this? God, do you want us to do that?
- 23:33God, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And my biggest
- 23:35dream is one day God says, "No, not you,
- 23:38but your son." Oh, that's a father's
- 23:40dream. And if I could be vulnerable,
- 23:43it's like we we me and my wife struggled
- 23:45with infertility for 5 years. Doctor
- 23:47said we would never get pregnant.
- 23:48>> [snorts]
- 23:48>> And then one day I heard Joel Ostein
- 23:51preaching and he was talking about his
- 23:53father and the Holy Spirit said to me,
- 23:55"Are you willing to be John Ostein who
- 23:58some people know but not a lot of people
- 24:00know so that your son could be Joel
- 24:02Ostein, someone who everybody knows?"
- 24:04And I had this like I hope I could be
- 24:06honest on the podcast had this moment of
- 24:08jealousy over a child that wasn't even
- 24:10born yet. I'm like I don't want to be
- 24:12freaking John Ostein, man. I want to be
- 24:14Joel. And the Lord said, "All right,
- 24:16then I thanks for your honesty, but your
- 24:19honest answer has now just prolonged
- 24:21your infertility journey." And I
- 24:23remember a couple years later, I was at
- 24:25Hillsong Conference and uh Brian Houston
- 24:27was on stage and his son Joel Houston
- 24:29was on stage. And again, God saying, "Do
- 24:31you want to be Brian Houston or do you
- 24:32want to be Joel Houston?" And my heart
- 24:34had finally changed and I said, "Man, I
- 24:36I don't care." Cuz so often people know
- 24:39Hill Song's music, but they don't know
- 24:40who the senior pastor of the church is.
- 24:42And I said, "Yeah, I don't care. I I'd
- 24:44rather be anonymous. And then the third
- 24:46example was Wendell Smith and Judah
- 24:48Smith. That most people don't know who
- 24:50Wendell Smith is, but he's the
- 24:52foundation of of Judah's whole ministry.
- 24:55And everybody knows who Judah Smith is.
- 24:56He's Justin Bieber's pastor. He's, you
- 24:58know, he's a celebrity pastor. I hate
- 25:00that word, but you know, he's a
- 25:01celebrity pastor. And I finally got to
- 25:04the point of going, "Yep, I don't care
- 25:07about being well-known or successful. I
- 25:09I care about my son. I care about my son
- 25:13fulfilling the call of God on his life.
- 25:16And I would love to just be the
- 25:19foundation. I would love to be David who
- 25:22just buys the land and buys all the
- 25:24stuff and then Solomon gets the credit
- 25:26for building the temple. I actually
- 25:28think that's the test of every dad. Do
- 25:30you have enough vision to push the
- 25:33boundaries so much that God will
- 25:35eventually say, "No, not you, but your
- 25:38son." That is a good father's dream. And
- 25:42that wasn't always my dream, but today
- 25:44that's my dream. And I don't think
- 25:46that's just relevant for David or for
- 25:49Solomon or for Ezra. I think that's
- 25:52relevant for you and for me. I think
- 25:54it's a timeless truth. Tomorrow we've
- 25:56got day 352.
