- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible
- 0:13department.com to download a reading
- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 350.
- 0:28Can you believe it? We are trekking
- 0:30through 1 Chronicles. You probably
- 0:32enjoyed today's reading. I know I did.
- 0:35Chapters 13, 14, and 15. What a familiar
- 0:38story. You've probably heard this story
- 0:40in Samuel. Maybe not in Chronicles. And
- 0:44so, we're going to highlight some of the
- 0:46differences between Samuel and
- 0:48Chronicles. And if you haven't done
- 0:50today's reading, you probably don't even
- 0:51know what I'm talking about. So, if you
- 0:53have not done the assigned reading for
- 0:56today, how about you stop this video,
- 0:58pause the audio, and go get 1 Chronicles
- 1:01chapters 13, 14, and 15 read. It took me
- 1:05probably 10 minutes. I mean, it was
- 1:08quick reading today. I always I also
- 1:10have my audio Bible set to like two
- 1:12times speed. So, anyway, it never takes
- 1:15me a super super long time, but I think
- 1:17that you should get the reading done.
- 1:19With no further ado, like every day,
- 1:21we're going to jump into some context
- 1:22clues, some nerdy nuggets, and then
- 1:24we're going to end the episode with a
- 1:26timeless truth. So, let's dive into our
- 1:30context clues for the day. I got a lot
- 1:32of things to say. Also going to wrap up
- 1:35some loose ends from some of the
- 1:37previous days that we were on, but got a
- 1:39lot of things uh today. Okay, number
- 1:41one, this event, David bringing up the
- 1:44ark of God in a two-fold process. He
- 1:48tries to do it the first time on a cart.
- 1:50It fails. Okay. A man actually dies.
- 1:53We're going to talk about that a lot on
- 1:55today's episode. And then the ark just
- 1:58stays at a guy's house. Oed eat just
- 2:00literally and his house is flourishing.
- 2:02And so uh and then they go to get it
- 2:04again. Uh and they bring it to Jerusalem
- 2:07and they finally do it successfully.
- 2:09Okay. This event of the ark of the
- 2:12covenant being brought into Jerusalem.
- 2:14You may not realize this, but like this
- 2:16story is a big deal. So number one, Ezra
- 2:21is the one who's writing Chronicles.
- 2:24Okay, Ezra is also the one compiling the
- 2:26Psalms. And the number one theme that is
- 2:32sang about, sung about, sang, sung, I
- 2:34don't know, celebrated and sung sang.
- 2:38No, I don't know which one it is. uh the
- 2:40the the main event that is sung about in
- 2:44the Psalms is this moment of bringing
- 2:47the ark of the covenant into Jerusalem.
- 2:49Okay. So Psalm 24, Psalm 30, Psalm 68,
- 2:54Psalm 95, Psalm 96, Psalm 105, Psalm
- 2:59106, and Psalm 132 are all Psalms
- 3:04singing about and celebrating the
- 3:07ascension of the Ark of the Covenant
- 3:09into Jerusalem. So this moment's a big
- 3:12deal. It's also just a big deal for a
- 3:15priest like Ezra because who is it
- 3:18that's managing the temple which is
- 3:21where the ark of the covenant is going
- 3:22to be? That's right, priests. You're
- 3:24also going to see in this story
- 3:27everything that we're going to read
- 3:28today, the centrality of the Levites.
- 3:30the the reason the number one reason
- 3:33that the ark that David fails in
- 3:36bringing the ark of the covenant to
- 3:38Jerusalem the first time, the reason
- 3:40that someone dies is because Levites
- 3:42were not involved. So Ezra the Levite is
- 3:46writing this and Ezra is emphasizing the
- 3:51importance of Levites, which makes sense
- 3:54because Ezra is a Levite. Okay? And so
- 3:57Ezra wants his audience, his generation
- 4:00to understand the importance of Levites.
- 4:02So he's using a story from the past to
- 4:04explain just how important Levites are.
- 4:07Okay. Another just it's kind this is
- 4:10kind of a nerdy nugget, but we'll say it
- 4:12as context as a context clue. The end of
- 4:14Chronicles. So if you read the last
- 4:16chapter of Chronicles, which I think we
- 4:18did yesterday or the day before, the
- 4:20last chapter of Chronicles and the first
- 4:23chapter of Ezra 100% go together. Okay,
- 4:26it's it's almost as if it's low-key
- 4:28copied and pasted. Okay, so the sec the
- 4:32last chapter of 2 Chronicles. Okay, so
- 4:34the end of 2 Chronicles or the end of
- 4:37Chronicles and the beginning of Ezra are
- 4:40almost like a latch key with each other.
- 4:43They are they are a hitch and a trailer
- 4:46hook. Like they they they fit perfectly
- 4:48with each other, which is the main
- 4:51reason that most people believe, yeah,
- 4:53Ezra is behind all this stuff. Okay. All
- 4:55right. Next, I want to look at some of
- 4:57the key differences as it pertains to
- 5:00this story found in Samuel versus here
- 5:03in Chronicles. So, just going to kind of
- 5:05give us a 30foot,000 view. Okay. So,
- 5:09this story is found in Samuel chapters 5
- 5:13and 6. In Samuel chapters 5 and 6, there
- 5:17are four key events. The first is that
- 5:19David defeats the Philistines. The
- 5:21second is the ark's journey. Oza dying
- 5:25as he reaches out and touches the ark
- 5:27and then Oed Edom's house. Then third,
- 5:30the ark enters Jerusalem. And then
- 5:32fourth, David dances and his wife Mikall
- 5:36despises him because of the dancing.
- 5:38That's the events as described in Samuel
- 5:41chapters 5 and 6. When we get to
- 5:43Chronicles, this does not start with
- 5:46David defeating the Philistines. Okay,
- 5:48big big big difference. Okay, in
- 5:51Chronicles, David bringing the ark to
- 5:54Jerusalem is the very very very first
- 5:56thing he does. Let's actually go to
- 5:59Chronicles chapter 13. Okay, so I want
- 6:01you to begin to just see like just
- 6:04subtle like what's going on. Chronicles
- 6:0713:3
- 6:09says, "Let us bring the ark of our God
- 6:11back to us for we did not inquire of it
- 6:15during the reign of Saul." Well, who was
- 6:17Saul inquiring of? He was using the
- 6:19witch of Endor and he was using a an
- 6:23occult source to inquire of Samuel, not
- 6:27even God. Okay? So the thing in
- 6:31Chronicles that actually get Saul killed
- 6:33is the very thing that David is good at.
- 6:37So there's a natural juxosition in
- 6:40Chronicles for a religious reason for
- 6:43Saul's death and a religious reason for
- 6:47David's exaltation. Okay? So it's the
- 6:50same events with a different
- 6:52interpretation. So because Saul's
- 6:55problem is that he doesn't inquire of
- 6:57the Lord, the very first thing David
- 6:59does is let's go get the ark so that we
- 7:02can inquire of God. And it says this,
- 7:04verse four, the whole assembly agreed to
- 7:06this because it seemed right to all the
- 7:09people. I want you to focus on whole
- 7:12assembly and all the people. I think it
- 7:15was maybe yesterday or the day before,
- 7:16can't remember, where I told you that in
- 7:19Chronicles as opposed to Samuel, there
- 7:23is no discrepancy between whether or not
- 7:25Judah accepts David as king or all of
- 7:28Israel accepts David as king. And so
- 7:30this language like whole assembly, all
- 7:33Israel, okay, is really communicating
- 7:38David is the unanimous decision because
- 7:41he's Yahweh's decision and all the
- 7:43people are going to agree. Okay, so we
- 7:46immediately start with the ark's
- 7:48journey. Oza dies because he touches the
- 7:50cart. The ark now goes to Obedom's
- 7:54house. Then chapter 14, we get into
- 7:56David's family and we get into David's
- 7:58defeat of the Philistines. Okay, so this
- 8:00is flipped. In Samuel, David defeats the
- 8:03Philistines and that's what prompts him
- 8:05to go get the ark. In Chronicles, he
- 8:07just wants to go get the ark. As if
- 8:10defeating the Philistines has nothing to
- 8:11do with it, even though it's the
- 8:12Philistines that had captured the ark,
- 8:14but that's a whole another story for a
- 8:15whole another time. Okay. Then David
- 8:17defeats the Philistines. Verse 15, or
- 8:19sorry, chapter 15, the ark enters
- 8:22Jerusalem. And guess what? But we have a
- 8:24lot more of a lot more worship because
- 8:28the thing that David is going to do is
- 8:29he's going to go get singers. He's going
- 8:31to go get choirs. He's going to go get
- 8:33Levites. And David is going to make sure
- 8:35that this has a way bigger emphasis and
- 8:39focus on worship. And Chronicles is
- 8:42going to highlight the worship emphasis.
- 8:46Okay? Whereas Samuel, that's not what is
- 8:49being highlighted in the book of Samuel.
- 8:51And then David dances uh in in McCall
- 8:55has an issue with it. In Samuel, the
- 8:57story ends with the focus being on the
- 8:59tension between David and McCall because
- 9:01of the procession of the ark. Whereas in
- 9:03Chronicles, this is just a footnote at
- 9:05the end of the major focus being worship
- 9:09during the procession of the ark. Okay?
- 9:10So, these are these subtle differences.
- 9:13And as Bible nerds, we're we care about
- 9:16the nerdy little details. We don't
- 9:18believe the devil's in the details. We
- 9:19believe God's in the details. All right.
- 9:21It is important to note that David's
- 9:24very very very very very first act as
- 9:26king is to immediately think of Yahweh,
- 9:29the true king. And so the very first
- 9:32thing that we're going to get in
- 9:33Chronicles is David gets installed as
- 9:36king. And what does he do? He goes and
- 9:38gets Israel's real king. And Israel's
- 9:40real king is never going to be David.
- 9:43And this is what makes David a man after
- 9:44God's own heart. Is that David, although
- 9:46he's king, never sees himself as the
- 9:48king. He sees Yahweh as king. And that
- 9:52right there, that is something that Saul
- 9:55did not do. And that is what makes David
- 9:58David. And Chronicles is making a point.
- 10:01As long as David worships and exalts
- 10:05Yahweh as king, there are some of these
- 10:07other moral issues that don't even get
- 10:11talked about. And that may make some
- 10:13people feel uncomfortable. you you may
- 10:15feel uncomfortable with the fact that
- 10:16Chronicles and Samuel or Chronicles and
- 10:19Kings have like differences or
- 10:21discrepancies. And I get that. I think
- 10:24for me, I had to come to the realization
- 10:26that I can't bring my modern
- 10:30expectations to the Bible. Like why?
- 10:33What makes me right? Right. like that.
- 10:36It's kind of like generationally
- 10:39arrogant to just assume that that
- 10:42because I was born at a certain time
- 10:46that I have a certain definition of
- 10:49truth or fact factuality
- 10:52and and and really if I'm going to
- 10:54respect the the cultural norms of the
- 10:57people who wrote the Bible that actually
- 10:59I I have to submit what I think is
- 11:02correct to actually just what is
- 11:04reality. And uh anyway, all right, let
- 11:06me dive into some nerdy nuggets. Okay,
- 11:08let's talk through chapters 13, 14, and
- 11:1015. This is obviously David's first act
- 11:12as king, which sets a precedent for what
- 11:14kind of king he's going to be. Okay,
- 11:16verse 8 of chapter 13, it says this.
- 11:19David and all the Israelites were
- 11:22celebrating with all their might before
- 11:24God with songs and harps, liars and
- 11:26timberals, symbols, and trumpets. Okay?
- 11:28They're celebrating with all their
- 11:30might. This is this is passionate
- 11:33worship. Okay? And I want you to
- 11:35emphasize that word passion. When they
- 11:38came to the threshing floor of Kadan, Oz
- 11:40reached out his hand to say to the ark,
- 11:42because the oxen stumbled, the Lord's
- 11:44anger burned against Oza and he struck
- 11:47him down because he had put his hand on
- 11:50the ark. So, he died there before God.
- 11:53Okay, let's like unpack that because
- 11:57like like David, that may make you
- 11:59angry. What does it say right here in
- 12:00verse 11? Then David was angry. There's
- 12:03a lot of things that we can take out of
- 12:05this. Number one, passion without
- 12:08protocols is a problem. Let me say that
- 12:11again. Passion without proper protocols
- 12:15is a problem. Okay? So, David's angry,
- 12:19but then David has to realize, I'm the
- 12:22problem. I'm mad at God, but really I,
- 12:26as a leader, created an unsafe
- 12:28environment for people to worship. And
- 12:30one of the things I had to learn really
- 12:32early on in youth ministry is that we
- 12:34don't just create a physically safe
- 12:36environment or an emotionally safe
- 12:38environment. We create a spiritually
- 12:40safe environment. And what I mean by
- 12:42spiritually safe, you know, we had a
- 12:44popup here in Houston a couple of months
- 12:47ago and kind of a random guy that is not
- 12:51on our serve team who has not gone
- 12:53through any of our launch team training
- 12:56or anything. was just kind of walking
- 12:58around giving prophetic words to people
- 13:00and like we stopped him from doing that
- 13:03and then apologized to some of the you
- 13:05know people that he had given prophetic
- 13:08words to because I don't care if you
- 13:10have the gift of prophecy. My job as a
- 13:13leader is to create a spiritually safe
- 13:15environment and the issue is not whether
- 13:18or not you're a true prophet or not. The
- 13:20issue is we don't know you. And there
- 13:23are protocols in place to keep people
- 13:26safe. And so if you're a leader, I get
- 13:30it. David just wants everybody to
- 13:32experience the presence of God. And he's
- 13:34passionate. But you cannot have zeal
- 13:37without wisdom. You cannot have the Holy
- 13:40Spirit without order. Okay. Paul says in
- 13:43Corinthians, he's like, "Hey, hey, hey,
- 13:45you can't have multiple prophetic words.
- 13:47Hey, let let's limit it to three." And
- 13:49you know what? If someone's going to
- 13:51speak in tongues publicly, somebody
- 13:52needs to interpret. And hey, God's a God
- 13:56of order. So, I'm never going to be the
- 13:59kind of person to like try to quench
- 14:02passion. Passion's great. And if
- 14:05protocols makes the passion go away,
- 14:07then you didn't really have passion
- 14:09because let me tell you the definition
- 14:10of passion. Passion is your willingness
- 14:13to suffer for something that you're
- 14:14excited about. That's what passion is.
- 14:17That's why we call that last week of
- 14:19Jesus's life. Him going to the cross,
- 14:21him going to Gethsemane, him
- 14:23experiencing excruciating pain the
- 14:26passion of the Christ. Passion is not
- 14:28just found in how excited I am. It's how
- 14:31much pain am I willing to go through in
- 14:35order to actually experience the thing
- 14:37that I'm excited about. And so if
- 14:40protocols can quench passion, then
- 14:42you're not really that passionate about
- 14:44what you said you were passionate about
- 14:45in the first place. protocols and
- 14:48systems and procedures and policies.
- 14:51That's not just bureaucracy that keeps
- 14:54everybody safe because they're dancing
- 14:56before the Lord with all their might.
- 14:58They're celebrating. They got harps,
- 15:00liars, timberals, symbols, trumpets, and
- 15:03a dude dies. As a dies, and David is
- 15:07angry, which also means this, God can be
- 15:11trusted with your anger. Okay? anger.
- 15:14Anger in and of itself is not unhealthy.
- 15:16But what are he going to do with that
- 15:18anger? And what does David do with that
- 15:20anger? He repents. He changes. He goes
- 15:23and he finds some Levites. Okay? And
- 15:25what does he say? We'll kind of skip
- 15:27through chapter 14. We'll go straight to
- 15:29chapter 15. It says this. I'll start
- 15:31reading in verse 11. Then David summoned
- 15:35Zadok and Abatha the priest and Uriel
- 15:38and Aai aa
- 15:42Isaiah I think um Joel Shemea Eliel and
- 15:48Aminadab the Levites. So he went and got
- 15:50some Levites again Ezra. Okay, of course
- 15:53Ezra believes that Levites are the
- 15:55solution. He goes and gets some Levites.
- 15:57He said to them, "You are the heads of
- 15:59the Levitical families. You and your
- 16:01fellow Levites are to consecrate
- 16:03yourselves and bring up the ark of the
- 16:05Lord, the God of Israel, to the place
- 16:07I've prepared for it. It was because
- 16:10you, the Levites, did not bring it up
- 16:12the first time that the Lord our God
- 16:14broke out in anger against us. We did
- 16:18not inquire of him. So again, inquiring
- 16:22of him is a big issue. Okay? We did not
- 16:24inquire of him about how to do it in the
- 16:28prescribed way.
- 16:30So you know I earlier I said passion
- 16:33without protocols is a problem. I could
- 16:36easily say it passion without a
- 16:38prescription like doing it the
- 16:41prescribed way is also a problem.
- 16:44There's a prescribed way to do things
- 16:46and that shouldn't quench the spirit.
- 16:48The spirit's not sensitive to protocols.
- 16:51Sometimes people like we shouldn't
- 16:53quench the spirit. It's like uh actually
- 16:57there were no protocols here and the
- 16:59issue is not that the spirit got
- 17:00quenched. It was that the spirit broke
- 17:03out and killed somebody. So we should
- 17:06have some proper protocols. Now why does
- 17:09someone die? Someone dies because an
- 17:12unclean unholy person touching the holy
- 17:15presence of God equals death. which
- 17:18should help us reframe why God even
- 17:20kicks Adam and Eve out of the garden. He
- 17:22kicks them out not because he hates
- 17:24them, not because he's cursed them, but
- 17:26because he knows if they remain in the
- 17:28garden, they will die. Because unholy
- 17:32people around a holy God with no
- 17:35sacrificial atoning intermediary is
- 17:39going to mean that that holiness is
- 17:42going to absolutely kill the person.
- 17:45I'll say it this way. If you bleach your
- 17:48white clothes and you make a mistake and
- 17:50put colored clothes in there, the bleach
- 17:52doesn't hate the colored clothes, it's
- 17:55that bleach is going to bleach. Bleach
- 17:57is going to do what bleach do. So
- 17:59holiness is going to do what holiness
- 18:01does. And holiness destroys sin.
- 18:04Holiness always is going to destroy sin.
- 18:07Just so happens that that sin is living
- 18:10in a host. That host is a human being.
- 18:13Okay? So the Lord doesn't hate us. The
- 18:16Lord has no issue with us a as a person.
- 18:19It's just that the holy we we David
- 18:22created an unsafe scenario for the holy
- 18:25presence of God. What if I told you that
- 18:27what you're learning in this video was
- 18:29just the tip of the iceberg. The Bible

- 19:43this your year to become a Bible nerd.
- 19:46Chapter 14:14, we're going to see David
- 19:49inquire of the Lord again. I know I said
- 19:51we were going to skip chapter 14, but I
- 19:53just want to go back just for a second.
- 19:5514:14, he's in the process of defeating
- 19:57the Philistines. And it says this. So
- 19:59David inquired of the Lord again, and
- 20:02God answered him. And God gave him
- 20:03pretty like specific instructions for
- 20:06how to defeat uh the enemies of Israel.
- 20:09All right. So big theme is David's
- 20:12ability to inquire of the Lord. It's a
- 20:14massive juxaposition to Saul who did not
- 20:18inquire of the Lord and was relying on
- 20:20Samuel to inquire of the Lord for him
- 20:23and then proceeded to use a an occult
- 20:28witch to a medium to to get the spirit
- 20:32of Samuel present because of his own
- 20:36inability to hear from God for himself.
- 20:38Okay, lots and lots and lots and lots of
- 20:41themes going here going on here in 1
- 20:44Chronicles chapters 13:14 and 15. What's
- 20:46our Thomas truth for the day? You could
- 20:49probably guess it's that passion and
- 20:52zeal are amazing. But order systems,
- 20:56rules, protocols, procedures make things
- 20:59safe. That is our timeless truth. That's
- 21:02not just true for David. That's not just
- 21:04true for these Levites. That's not just
- 21:06true for OE Edom or Uza. That's not just
- 21:09true for Ezra. No, no, no. That's true
- 21:11for you. That's true for me. That
- 21:13passion and zeal are awesome tools. Part
- 21:17of the reason why I waited until I was
- 21:19as close to 40 as possible to plant a
- 21:21church is because I wanted if if there
- 21:24was a matrix between wisdom and energy,
- 21:27I wanted to get at the exact cross
- 21:30point. You know, at 25, I had a lot of
- 21:33energy, just didn't have enough wisdom
- 21:35to plant a church. And guess what? At
- 21:3765, I'm going to have so much wisdom,
- 21:39but I won't still have the energy. So,
- 21:4225, tons of energy, no wisdom. 65, a lot
- 21:46of wisdom, no energy. So, I thought to
- 21:48myself, 40 will be the moment where I've
- 21:51got peak energy and peak wisdom. Let's
- 21:54plant this church. And so my advice to a
- 21:57lot of people would be, hey, if you've
- 22:00got more passion than you've got
- 22:02understanding, if you got more zeal than
- 22:04you have knowledge, man, you may want to
- 22:07not calm down, but you may want to be
- 22:10really intentional about getting some
- 22:12systems and some protocols and some
- 22:14procedures and and some knowledge in
- 22:18addition to the energy and the zeal and
- 22:20the passion that you have. No need to
- 22:23bring the passion down. Just got to
- 22:25match that passion with the required
- 22:27amount of wisdom. All right. Tomorrow
- 22:30we've got day 351. We're going to be
- 22:33looking at 1 Chronicles chapters 16,17
- 22:36and 18. I'm super super excited to be
