- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible

- 0:15plan and join the journey.
- 0:24LA FAMILIA, LET'S GO. WELCOME TO DAY 348
- 0:28here on the Bible department. We're
- 0:30diving into 1 Chronicles aka just
- 0:33Chronicles cuz in the original Tanakh
- 0:36there is no 2 Chronicles. ANYWH WHO 1
- 0:39Chronicles chapters 7 8 and 9. If you
- 0:42haven't done the reading then scram. Get
- 0:44out of here. No, I'm just joking. Stop
- 0:46the video, pause the audio, go get the
- 0:48reading done. You may get some
- 0:50inspiration for like a kid's name or
- 0:52something. Probably not. But anyway, 1
- 0:54Chronicles chapters 7 8 and 9 is on the
- 0:58docket today. And my job, like every
- 1:01day, is to give you context clues, some
- 1:03nerdy nuggets, and a timeless truth so
- 1:06that you can not just hear the word, not
- 1:08just know the word, but apply the word
- 1:10of God to your life. I'm excited for the
- 1:13timeless truth today. With no further
- 1:16ado, let's dive in. So for our context
- 1:19today, I'm actually going to give you an
- 1:21overall structure for the entire book of
- 1:24Chronicles, 1 and 2 Chronicles. Okay?
- 1:27Knowing how the structure of the book
- 1:29works actually allows us to see a
- 1:32massive theme and uh again, the the more
- 1:36contextual information that we have, the
- 1:39better interpretations we can make.
- 1:41Again, you know, we're still in the
- 1:44genealogy phase of of 1 Chronicles, but
- 1:49this genealogy is coming to a climactic
- 1:51point, and we will talk about that in
- 1:53our nerdy in our final nerdy nugget of
- 1:57the day. So, let's look a let's look at
- 1:59structure, okay? Overall 30,000 foot
- 2:02structure. What is going on in
- 2:04Chronicles? Okay, now 1 Chronicles
- 2:07chapters 1-9, as you've already seen, is
- 2:10genealogies. You're walking through
- 2:11those genealogies right now. 1
- 2:14Chronicles chapters 10-21
- 2:17is going to focus on David's reign. 1
- 2:20Chronicles chapters 22-29
- 2:23is going to talk about we're going to
- 2:26discuss preparation for Solomon to
- 2:29succeed David. Okay. Then 2 Chronicles
- 2:32chapters 1-9 is going to focus on
- 2:35Solomon's reign. And then the real like
- 2:39I mean kind of the meat of the book is
- 2:41going to be 2 Chronicles. What we know
- 2:43of as 2 Chronicles is going to be
- 2:46chapters 10 to 36 is going to focus on
- 2:48the house of David. Now this means the
- 2:51kings of Judah, the house of David. By
- 2:54house we mean dynasty. Okay. David as a
- 2:57person has obviously died. But we're
- 3:01going to focus on his house, his
- 3:02lineage, his descendants, his, you know,
- 3:05like for anyone who may have watched
- 3:07Game of Thrones, House Lannister, House
- 3:09Stark, right? Okay, we're going to focus
- 3:11on David's house. Now, 2 Chronicles
- 3:1410-36 goes through the story of David's
- 3:17dynasty. And in it, you can uh observe a
- 3:22cycle of the temple's decline and
- 3:24reform. So, what's going to happen is
- 3:26Rayoboam, the temple's going to go into
- 3:29decline. Then you're going to get Asa
- 3:31and Jehoshaphat and the temple's going
- 3:32to go into reform. [snorts] And then
- 3:34we're going to get Jehoram and Ahaziah.
- 3:37The temple's going to go into decline.
- 3:39And then you're going to see Joash. The
- 3:41temple's going to come into reform. And
- 3:42then you're going to see Uzziah and
- 3:44Ahaz. The temple's going to go into
- 3:45decline. And then you're going to get
- 3:47Hezekiah. The temple's going to come
- 3:48into reform. And then you're going to
- 3:50get Manasseh. The temple's going to
- 3:52decline. Quality of the temple. The
- 3:54centralization of the temple. The
- 3:56importance on the temple. Okay, the
- 3:58temple's going to decline. Then Josiah,
- 4:00we're going to get temple reform. And
- 4:02then we're going to get Josiah's sons.
- 4:05And what's going to happen? Temple
- 4:06decline. So what we're going to see from
- 4:08chapters 10 all the way to 36 is cycles
- 4:12of decline and reform. Decline and
- 4:14reform. Decline and reform. Decline and
- 4:15reform. Okay? It's important that you
- 4:18kind of understand. Yesterday we teed
- 4:20this up that uh if you look at Luke
- 4:2411:51
- 4:26Jesus is going to say from the beginning
- 4:28from the blood of Abel to Zechariah
- 4:31which is his way of saying from the
- 4:33beginning to the end from the first to
- 4:35the last okay from Abel to Zechariah the
- 4:38innocent blood of the prophets is going
- 4:40to be on your heads at this generation
- 4:43you're going to be responsible for it
- 4:45okay uh now when Jesus is saying that we
- 4:49we obviously needed to go to 2
- 4:51Chronicles 24 20-22 to see who Zechariah
- 4:56even is. Well, he's the last prophet of
- 4:59the Tanakh. Okay? He's the last prophet
- 5:01of the Hebrew Bible. Now, another way
- 5:04that I want you to see just how
- 5:07Chronicles works as the last book of the
- 5:10Hebrew Bible is by showing you that
- 5:13Chronicles in and of itself gives you a
- 5:17complete overview of everything that has
- 5:20already happened in the Bible. So if you
- 5:22go to 1 Chronicles 1. Okay, 1 Chronicles
- 5:271 verse one, Adam. I mean, how how much
- 5:31more Genesis can we get? Adam. The
- 5:34reason that this genealogy starts at
- 5:37Adam is because Chronicles, 1 and 2
- 5:40Chronicles, is showing you that it's re
- 5:45almost like recapping the entire history
- 5:48of everything that has happened in the
- 5:50entire Bible up until this point. And
- 5:53how's it going to end? Okay, 2
- 5:55Chronicles chapter 36 starting in verse
- 6:0020. It's going to say he carried into
- 6:02exile to Babylon the remnant. So, we're
- 6:05going to get all the way to exile. Okay,
- 6:07the remnant. And we're going to focus on
- 6:10that word remnant in a couple of minutes
- 6:12on this episode. Who escaped from the
- 6:14sword and they became servants to him
- 6:16and his successors until the kingdom of
- 6:18Persia came to power. The land enjoy it
- 6:21enjoyed its Sabbath rests. All the time
- 6:24of its desolation, it rested until the
- 6:2770 years were completed in fulfillment
- 6:29of the word of the Lord spoken by
- 6:31Jeremiah. In the first year of Cyrus,
- 6:34king of Persia, in order to fulfill the
- 6:36word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah, the
- 6:39Lord moved the heart of Cyrus, king of
- 6:41Persia, to make a proclamation
- 6:43throughout his realm and also to put it
- 6:46in writing. So, this is now the return
- 6:48of the exiles. So in one verse 20 and 21
- 6:51we get the exile. And then in verse 22
- 6:53we get the return of the exiles. And
- 6:56what is the verse that the entire book
- 6:58of chronicles is going to end on? Verse
- 7:0023. This is what Cyrus king of Persia
- 7:03says. The Lord the God of heaven has
- 7:05given me all the kingdoms of the earth.
- 7:07And he has appointed me to build a
- 7:09temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah.
- 7:14Any of his people among you may go up.
- 7:17Key words, go up and may be and may the
- 7:21Lord their God be with them. Done. The
- 7:24book is done. So what is Chronicles
- 7:27doing? It's starting with Adam and then
- 7:30going all the way up to the present
- 7:32moment. Okay, that's it. That's And what
- 7:34is and what is this verse charging
- 7:37everyone to do? Keep going up to the
- 7:39temple. Remember we talked about this in
- 7:41Psalms when we were looking at the
- 7:43Psalms of Ascent. The reason that people
- 7:45from all around Israel could go up to
- 7:48Jerusalem is because it doesn't matter
- 7:50where you are. In order to go to
- 7:52Jerusalem, you got to go up, right?
- 7:54Because it's nestled in the hills. So,
- 7:58the Chronicles as as a whole is ending
- 8:02with a let's go up. And what are we
- 8:04going up to? We're going up to the
- 8:06temple to do what? To wait for the
- 8:08Messiah. To wait. Because I know we're
- 8:11all in the habit of just kind of saying,
- 8:13"Yeah, you know, there's 400 silent
- 8:15years from Malachi to Matthew." And
- 8:18really, it there's not it. There's 400
- 8:20silent years from Chronicles to Matthew
- 8:23because the book of Chronicles is
- 8:26actually the thing that's supposed to
- 8:27get you to the edge of the It's the
- 8:31cliffhanger. Okay? So, it leaves on a
- 8:33cliffhanger. You can feel it. That's the
- 8:36last verse of the entire book that we're
- 8:38studying right now. This is what Cyrus,
- 8:40king of Persia, says, "The Lord, the God
- 8:42of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms
- 8:44of the earth, and he has appointed me to
- 8:46build a temple for him at Jerusalem in
- 8:48Judah. Any of his people among you may
- 8:50go up, and may the Lord their God be
- 8:52with them." Done. Like that's it. So, we
- 8:56start 1 Chronicles chapter 1 with Adam.
- 8:59That's the beginning. Ezra is going to
- 9:01recount the entire history of the Jewish
- 9:04people. and he's going to recount the
- 9:06entire history of the Jewish people all
- 9:08the way to the exile. We're going to get
- 9:10two verses on the exile. Then we're
- 9:11going to get a couple of verses on the
- 9:13return of the exile. And then we've got
- 9:16a cliffhanger. And what should we be
- 9:18anticipating when we get to the end of
- 9:20that cliffhanger? Going up to to going
- 9:24up to Jerusalem to be in the temple. And
- 9:27we're believing that the Lord God will
- 9:29be with them. Okay? Will be with them.
- 9:31My name is Emanuel and it means the Lord
- 9:34be with you. Okay? God is with us. And
- 9:38so, how does Matthew start? I'll tell
- 9:40you exactly how Matthew starts. It
- 9:42starts, how does Luke start? How does
- 9:44the New Testament start? It starts with
- 9:47this couple, Simeon and Anna, waiting
- 9:50where? Waiting exactly where Cyrus, king
- 9:53of Persia, set them up to the temple.
- 9:56They're waiting in the temple. And what
- 9:57do they behold? the beauty of the glory
- 10:00of the Lord coming into the temple. They
- 10:03are waiting. They're they're doing
- 10:04exactly what the Old Testament has
- 10:06commissioned them to do. Go up to the
- 10:09temple and may the Lord your God be with
- 10:12you. And who is the Lord their God?
- 10:14Jesus. And what is what does Jesus do as
- 10:17a baby? He's walked right into the
- 10:19temple so that he can be with them.
- 10:21Matthew is going to pick up on this
- 10:22exact theme. And what is the name that's
- 10:25given to this baby by Mary and Joseph?
- 10:27Emmanuel, may God be with you to the
- 10:30incarnation. So the the cliffhanger of
- 10:33Chronicles is to set you up to go wait
- 10:36in the temple and wait for the
- 10:37incarnation. And so I I just want you to
- 10:40get this 30,000 foot idea that the Bible
- 10:44is the narrative arc of the Bible is not
- 10:47from Genesis to Malachi. The the way
- 10:50that we have read the Bible is a is
- 10:53actually how it was designed to go. not
- 10:56from Genesis to Malachi, not the way
- 10:59that your English translations are
- 11:00organized, but rather from Genesis to
- 11:04Chronicles. And this last verse of 2
- 11:08Chronicles chapter 36 is leaving on a
- 11:11cliffhanger. And everyone in the 400year
- 11:14gap is in that cliffhanger, waiting for
- 11:18the Lord to be with them as they wait in
- 11:21the temple. And that honestly is a lot
- 11:24of the context that we need in order to
- 11:26get through this book. All right, I'm
- 11:28going to fly through our nerdy nuggets
- 11:30today. What if I told you that what
- 11:32you're learning in this video was just
- 11:35the tip of the iceberg. The Bible
- 11:37department is actually powered by Arma.
- 11:40What is Arma? I'm so glad you [music]
- 11:42asked. Arma is an online
- 11:44subscription-based platform that we
- 11:46designed to help people, everyday
- 11:49people, learn the Bible for themselves.
- 11:52We started Arma so that anybody anywhere
- 11:55could have access to trustworthy and
- 11:58entertaining Bible and theology content.
- 12:00In addition to this podcast, we have
- 12:03over 60 courses on individual books of
- 12:06the Bible, on theology topics, and on
- 12:09some hot topics like homosexuality,
- 12:11tithing, and women in ministry. But
- 12:13really, Arma is a community. A community
- 12:16of people that I've gotten [music] to
- 12:18know. A community where thousands of
- 12:21people are currently finding family,
- 12:24asking questions, and nerding out on the
- 12:26Bible together. If you want a community
- 12:28to read the Bible with you this year, or
- 12:31if you want to dive into some deeper
- 12:33theological content, or if you want more
- 12:36exclusive access to me and the entire
- 12:39ARMA team, how about you go to the bible
- 12:42department.com,
- 12:43I'll be sure to post the [music] link in
- 12:45the description of this video. Let's
- 12:47make this your year to become a Bible
- 12:50nerd. What you obviously need to know is
- 12:54that from 1st Chronicles 1:1 to 2
- 12:57Chronicles 36-23,
- 12:59the the these two books, aka one book,
- 13:02cover the entire history of the Jewish
- 13:04people and sets us up for the New
- 13:06Testament. It sets us up perfectly for
- 13:09the second temple period. I'm going to
- 13:11fly through these nerdy nuggets. Okay. 1
- 13:13Chronicles 7:es 1-5 is going to focus on
- 13:16the tribe of Issachar. 1 Chronicles 7:es
- 13:206-12 is going to focus on Benjamin. Now,
- 13:24the reason that Benjamin gets a massive
- 13:26focus because Benjamin as a tribe has
- 13:29been loyal to David. It's going to be
- 13:32key. If you're loyal to David, you get
- 13:35rescued. You get restored. Now, here's
- 13:37the context in Genesis. Context that we
- 13:39have in the book of Genesis. If you
- 13:42remember all the way back in the ending
- 13:44of Genesis, the situation was beginning
- 13:46with with the actual brothers
- 13:48themselves. Judah swore both to Jacob
- 13:52and to Joseph that he would give his own
- 13:56life and freedom as a shity for his two
- 13:59imprisoned brothers, Simeon and
- 14:02Benjamin. He protected them as his
- 14:05brothers. and Judah as a tribe still had
- 14:08Simeon and Benjamin under their
- 14:11protection. Okay, so what we're going to
- 14:13see it's playing out in these
- 14:15genealogies, but it plays out through
- 14:17all the pages of scripture is that what
- 14:19happened with the actual brothers, okay,
- 14:22the 12 brothers that create the 12
- 14:24tribes, what actually happened with
- 14:26those 12 brothers is then going to get
- 14:28played out with the 12 tribes. So Simeon
- 14:32and Benjamin are going to be insanely
- 14:35like closely associated and related to
- 14:39Judah. All right? And that's what this
- 14:42part of the genealogy is communicating
- 14:44to us. 1st Chronicles 7:13, we're going
- 14:46to get a focus on Naftali, just one
- 14:49verse. and then 1st Chronicles 7:14 and
- 14:5219. We've already looked at the eastern
- 14:54half of Manasseh, which didn't get into
- 14:56the promised land. But these nine
- 14:58verses, sorry, five verses are going to
- 15:01focus on the western half of that tribe.
- 15:04And then 1 Chronicles 7 20- 29, we're
- 15:07going to get a big focus on Ephraim.
- 15:10Okay? Now, you may not realize this, but
- 15:12Ephraim is a huge tribe. Okay? This is
- 15:16the most important tribe other than
- 15:18Judah. Okay, Ephraim. This is of course
- 15:21a southern Judah focused genealogy and
- 15:24story. Okay, so Ephraim will not get the
- 15:27space its size and importance should
- 15:29get. Okay, it was the tribe that
- 15:32dominated the northern kingdom of Israel
- 15:35and its territory was Samaria and it
- 15:38remained the center of the north. So
- 15:41much so that in scripture, Israel, the
- 15:44northern kingdom of Israel as opposed to
- 15:45the southern kingdom of Judah. The
- 15:47northern kingdom of Israel in its
- 15:49territory was Samaria. Sorry, it was
- 15:53referred to as Ephraim. Okay, the
- 15:55northern kingdom of Israel just referred
- 15:56to as Ephraim. And outside of scripture
- 15:59as well, remember there's a cyroephic
- 16:03war. Why is it called Ephramatic? Well,
- 16:05the the war is actually with Israel, but
- 16:08Ephraim is synonymous with Israel
- 16:11because it's the dominant tribe in the
- 16:13north. If the roles were reversed and
- 16:16this was the story of the northern
- 16:18tribes return from exile, then Ephraim
- 16:21would have the most space. It would be
- 16:24Judah. It is the north's version of
- 16:27Judah. But it was Jeroboam of the tribe
- 16:31of Ephraim who led the northern tribes
- 16:34in rebellion against the house of David
- 16:36and the house of Yahweh. So in many ways
- 16:39the blame for the loss of the 10 tribes
- 16:41and how they are removed from history
- 16:44and this story lies at the feet of the
- 16:47tribe of Ephraim. Okay. So where
- 16:49Benjamin is has been loyal to David.
- 16:52Okay. Ephraim has been the opposite of
- 16:55loyal to David. I'll say it another way.
- 16:57Okay. In the eternal war between the
- 17:00sisters Leah and Rachel, it is Leah who
- 17:02wins again. It was her son and her heir
- 17:07that survived to lead Israel. Judah, not
- 17:11Rachel's. Her heir was Joseph and his
- 17:15heir was Ephraim. And though this tribe
- 17:18in the north was important, ultimately
- 17:21this tribe was lost. And we'll talk
- 17:23about why this tribe was lost as we
- 17:27unpack the word remnant. Okay. So then
- 17:30chapter 7 30 to 40 we get a focus on
- 17:34Asher. Notice how the tribes of Dan and
- 17:36Zebulun are missing. But that's because
- 17:39there's a theological point that these
- 17:42genealogies are making. Every tribe
- 17:45doesn't need to be included. That's not
- 17:46the point. Chapter 8, we're going to get
- 17:49another focus on Benjamin because we're
- 17:51going to get Saul's line and the sons of
- 17:53Benjamin. So, Benjamin is going to make
- 17:55another appearance. And then in chapter
- 17:589, okay, we are going to get content
- 18:01regarding the very first return. Okay?
- 18:04And here's what it says. Chapter 9, so
- 18:06all Israel was recorded in genealogies
- 18:09and these are written in the book of the
- 18:11kings of Israel. And Judah was taken
- 18:14into exile in Babylon because of their
- 18:16breach of faith. The entire story which
- 18:19will be revisited much later in the book
- 18:22in one line. And then straight away
- 18:25here's what we get. Now the first to
- 18:27dwell again in their possessions in
- 18:30their cities were Israel, the priests,
- 18:32the Levites, and the temple servants.
- 18:35Then the next few paragraphs. Okay. So
- 18:38the people are backed and there's a
- 18:40massive theological point being made
- 18:42that these people that have come back,
- 18:45these are the remnant. So the whole
- 18:47point of the genealogy is to essentially
- 18:50show you a before and after. Okay? Look
- 18:53at how many hundreds of thousand people
- 18:54there were and now only this small
- 18:58little bit is coming back. If the story
- 19:01started at chapter nine and just showed
- 19:03you who came back, you'd have no
- 19:04appreciation for whether it's a lot of
- 19:07people or a small amount of people, you
- 19:09you'd have nothing to compare it to. So,
- 19:12the first eight chapters are not just
- 19:14telling you the story of the tribes and
- 19:15their importance, but they're also
- 19:17telling you how robust of a nation
- 19:20Israel is and now how lean of a nation
- 19:24Israel is. But this isn't to be like
- 19:27discouraging. It's actually to say the
- 19:29remnant is where it's at. Like like the
- 19:33remnant is going to become a a badge of
- 19:36honor. Okay. I I was actually in a youth
- 19:39group growing up called the remnant and
- 19:41our senior pastor shut that down. He was
- 19:43like the reason the youth ministry only
- 19:4530 kids, it went from like 600 kids to
- 19:4730 kids. And he's like cuz you named it
- 19:49the remnant. Like remnant literally
- 19:51means the leftovers. And he's like, "You
- 19:54got you can't name the thing the remnant
- 19:56like and think it's going to grow."
- 19:58Like, and we had a badge of honor. We
- 20:00were like, "Yeah, the youth group used
- 20:01to be 600 kids, but those kids were like
- 20:03smoking weed and having sex, and we're
- 20:05like we're we're I kid you not." Like,
- 20:08in terms of quality, we were strong. In
- 20:11terms of quantity, not so not not not so
- 20:13much. So, remnant, I mean, may not be a
- 20:16fantastic name if you're trying to grow
- 20:18in quantity. uh because it does mean
- 20:21those that have gone through the fire
- 20:23and come back and so that is what we are
- 20:25dealing with in chapter nine. Okay, all
- 20:28the the genealogies are all the context
- 20:32for the people that have returned to the
- 20:34land. There were 12 tribes, many clans
- 20:36and families, but now only these remain.
- 20:40Okay, this is thus the true Israel loyal
- 20:44to Yahweh and they have survived the
- 20:47refining fires of exile. So exile is
- 20:50going to be seen as a refining fire that
- 20:53the goal of exile was to burn off the
- 20:55extra. Okay, so that's why remnant is a
- 20:58badge of honor because we survived the
- 21:01fire. Okay. But now the these are the
- 21:04the sorry loyal to Yahweh that has sur
- 21:08have survived their fighting fires of
- 21:10exile. The remnant is pure and so the
- 21:14lists and more significant because it
- 21:16shows them to be the true Israel
- 21:18returning from exile in contrast to the
- 21:21people of the land. Okay, remember we
- 21:23dealt with this before the people of the
- 21:25land when we were in Ezra and Nehemiah.
- 21:28These are the opponents. So, we're going
- 21:30to get the true Israel coming back from
- 21:32exile as the remnant, purified, okay, by
- 21:36fire, refined versus the people of the
- 21:38land. Why does Ezra have an issue with
- 21:41the people of the land? I tell you
- 21:42exactly why. The people of the land,
- 21:45they are the descendants of those who
- 21:46did not go through exile and married in
- 21:49a pagan families. They cannot serve.
- 21:52They cannot claim the promised land.
- 21:53They are not pure. Exile has not refined
- 21:56them. They are not a part of the
- 21:59remnant. This list ends with mention of
- 22:02the revival of what will soon what we
- 22:05will soon read. The choir singing day
- 22:07and night that David set up for the
- 22:09temple. This is chapter 9:es 33 to34. It
- 22:13says this. Now these the singers, the
- 22:15heads of father's houses of the Levites
- 22:18were in the chambers of the temple free
- 22:20from other service for they were on duty
- 22:23day and night. These were heads of
- 22:26fathers houses of the Levites according
- 22:28to their generations leaders. These
- 22:31lived in Jerusalem. So when the Bible in
- 22:35Chronicles 9:33 and 34 talks about
- 22:38revival, it's saying no, the remnant,
- 22:41this refining fire of going through the
- 22:44exile has now produced Levites who are
- 22:47in the temple free from any other
- 22:49service on duty day and night singing
- 22:52before God. This is revival. Okay. And
- 22:56then chapter 9 verse 35-44
- 22:59is going to give us uh genealogies about
- 23:01Saul's line. So all these genealologies,
- 23:05all these lists are actually ultimately
- 23:10culminating or climaxing in 1 Chronicles
- 23:13chapter 9. Okay? It's a before and
- 23:15after. It's funny, you know, um, one
- 23:18time I was on the road and a gentleman
- 23:20was, you know, hosting me and I just
- 23:23thought to myself, not in like a rude or
- 23:25offensive way. I just thought to myself,
- 23:26yo, like he's a big dude. And then he
- 23:30actually told me, he's like, man, I'm
- 23:32down 200 lb. You just see my before
- 23:34picture. And I was like, show me the
- 23:36before picture. And of course, I then
- 23:38looked at him and realized, oh wow,
- 23:40yeah, you've you've definitely lost like
- 23:42200 lb. It's funny how once I saw the
- 23:45before picture, I looked at him in
- 23:47reality way different. I was thinking to
- 23:50myself, "Wow, that's a big guy." And now
- 23:51I was thinking to myself, "That's a
- 23:53small guy." Because I put him in context
- 23:56of who he used to be. So, chapter nine
- 23:59is showing us who Israel is right now.
- 24:01And you'll be thinking yourself, "Oh
- 24:03man, they're a big country. They're a
- 24:04big nation." But then the genealogies
- 24:07which is chapters 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 and 8 is
- 24:11actually showing you the before picture
- 24:13telling you no this is just a fraction
- 24:16of who Israel was. Like this is just a
- 24:19fraction of who Israel has been. This is
- 24:23only the remnant. Okay. So that's what
- 24:25the first nine chapters are doing. Let's
- 24:28get to our timeless truth for the day.
- 24:31Okay. I'm going to read Philippians
- 24:33chapter 3 verse 5 to you. And you may be
- 24:38thinking to yourself, why are we going
- 24:39all the way to the New Testament? Well,
- 24:41it's because in this original genealogy,
- 24:45which is 1 Chronicles 7 6-12, we focus
- 24:49on Benjamin. Okay? This is the tribe of
- 24:52Saul. And uh the tribe that Saul comes
- 24:56from is going to go through a lot of ups
- 24:59and downs throughout the Hebrew
- 25:01scriptures. But one person from the
- 25:04tribe of Saul, from the tribe of
- 25:06Benjamin, which is Saul's tribe, is
- 25:08actually going to get brought to the
- 25:10forefront of ministry and change the
- 25:13entire legacy of this entire tribe.
- 25:15Philippians 3:5 it says this. If someone
- 25:18else thinks he has reasons to put
- 25:20confidence in the flesh, I have more
- 25:22circumcised on the eighth day of the
- 25:24people of Israel of the tribe of
- 25:26Benjamin the Hebrew of Hebrews in
- 25:28regards to the law a Pharisee as for
- 25:30zeal persecuting the church as for
- 25:33righteousness based on the law
- 25:35faultless. This is Paul or rather Saul
- 25:40who we know as Paul. Okay, Paul is his
- 25:43Latin name. Saul is his Hebrew name. At
- 25:46no point does God convert his name from
- 25:48Saul to Paul. People preach that all the
- 25:50time. It always makes me glitch a little
- 25:52bit because the Bible doesn't say that.
- 25:54But anyway, [snorts] whereas the
- 25:56original Saul, the Benjaminite, was full
- 25:59of pride and arrogance, there's a new
- 26:01Saul who's going to redeem the name of
- 26:04his tribe. And that is the apostle. The
- 26:08apostle uh that we know as Paul. Latin
- 26:11name Paul, Hebrew name Saul or Saul. Uh
- 26:16so if yesterday I talked about legacy,
- 26:19the flip side of legacy is restoring
- 26:21your family or your tribe's name andor
- 26:24honor. For some of us, we are in the
- 26:27positions to create great legacy. But
- 26:29for some of us, creating great legacy is
- 26:31coming on the heels of restoring a
- 26:34damaged family name. Much of today's
- 26:37reading is dominated by Benjamin.
- 26:39Benjamin's story in scripture is one of
- 26:41redemption, of how the past, even a
- 26:44terrible one, does not always have to
- 26:47shape the future. There's a roller
- 26:48coaster ride for the tribe of Benjamin.
- 26:50Benjamin became one of the most hated
- 26:52tribes in the book of Judges. But then
- 26:54it rose to the top with King Saul only
- 26:58to fall again when its most famous son
- 27:01aka Saul who became king uh was such a
- 27:05failure. If then became a it then became
- 27:08a psychic of Judah, a buffer zone
- 27:10between Ephraim and Judah. But through
- 27:13Judah, it survived the exile. But
- 27:16because of Judah, its identity was
- 27:18swallowed up and Benjaminite became
- 27:21Jews. Okay, Benjaminites became Jews.
- 27:24Remember, Jews just means from Judah.
- 27:27But the story was not yet over. King
- 27:29Saul was would not be their most famous
- 27:33son. A thousand years after King Saul,
- 27:37uh, another Saul would be born to the
- 27:39tribe of Benjamin, known more by his
- 27:42Roman name, Paul. Paul the Benjaminite
- 27:45who was probably who has probably done
- 27:49more than any other person to shape
- 27:54Christianity. Our religion in the
- 27:57fulfillment of Judaism than any other
- 28:00human being on the planet has forever
- 28:03changed the world. And man, talk about
- 28:06redemption.
- 28:08Okay, being from the tribe of Benjamin
- 28:11used to not be a badge of honor, but
- 28:12because of Saul and his life as an
- 28:15apostle of Jesus, it became an honor.
- 28:18And that's not just true for the folks
- 28:20in the Bible. That's true for me and
- 28:22you. It's a timeless truth. All right,
- 28:24tomorrow we got day 3:49. We're going to
