- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible
- 0:13department.com to download a reading
- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 346. WE ARE IN
- 0:28OUR FINAL BOOK OF THE BIBLE. THAT'S
- 0:30RIGHT. CHRONICLES, BABY. IT'S OUR LAST
- 0:33BOOK. That's right. You didn't hear me
- 0:35wrong. It's our last book of the Bible.
- 0:37That's because in the original Hebrew
- 0:39Bible, first and 2 Chronicles are one
- 0:44book. And so, of course, we're going to
- 0:46look at them as two books. But in the
- 0:49same way that Luke and Acts are part one
- 0:51and part two of each other, in the same
- 0:53way that Samuel and Kings are not
- 0:56separated in the original Hebrew Bible,
- 0:58Chronicles was not separated. Okay? So
- 1:01we are in the final book of the Bible,
- 1:06first and 2 Chronicles, which we are
- 1:09going to effectually f refer to as
- 1:12Chronicles. So I'm so excited at this
- 1:15point. Like if you've been on a streak,
- 1:18you are probably going to hit day 365.
- 1:21Uh which means you have spent or you're
- 1:23on the verge of spending a year in God's
- 1:27word. And I'm so so so so proud of you.
- 1:30Now, I'll say this. I'll say the same
- 1:32thing that I say every day. If you have
- 1:34not read, if you have not done the
- 1:36reading for today, then how about you
- 1:39stop the video, pause the audio, go get
- 1:411 Chronicles 1, two, and three read.
- 1:44Now, here's a heads up. It's a
- 1:47genealogy, okay? And I know, I know, I
- 1:50know, I know most of us Westerners, we
- 1:52hate genealogies, but I'm gonna try my
- 1:56best to get you to appreciate this list
- 2:00of names. All right? And heads up, the
- 2:03first nine chapters of Chronicles,
- 2:06that's right, the first nine chapters
- 2:09are are going to all be genealogy. All
- 2:11right? And so, uh, our first 3 days of
- 2:16Chronicles is really going to be, you
- 2:18know, focused on this genealogy that we
- 2:21have at the beginning of the book, which
- 2:23gets us immediately in context clues.
- 2:25Okay? There's a reason that Chronicles
- 2:28get skipped. If you're a Christian, you
- 2:30know, there's certain books like some
- 2:32minor prophets and then books like
- 2:34Chronicles that most of us skip. All
- 2:36right? And that's is no shame, okay? No
- 2:39judgment zone. Most of us are going to
- 2:41skip these books. And the reason is
- 2:43because in our English translations,
- 2:46Chronicles is going to come immediately
- 2:49after Kings. So in most of your Bibles,
- 2:52unless you have a Hebrew Bible, unless
- 2:54you have like a Tanakh running around
- 2:56here somewhere, all right? Uh your Bible
- 2:58probably is going to have 1 2 Samuel, 1,
- 3:002, Kings, 1, 2 Chronicles. And once you
- 3:04begin to start, if you get through the
- 3:06genealogy, you then realize that a ton
- 3:09of the content that you just read in
- 3:12Samuel and Kings is here again in
- 3:15Chronicles. And so it feels like a
- 3:17repeat. However, this our big context
- 3:19clue for the day. It's not a repeat.
- 3:22Like simple stuff like when Chronicles
- 3:25talks about David, it is going to
- 3:28completely omit the story of David
- 3:30murdering Uriah and taking Bashibba to
- 3:33be his wife. It's going to omit a bunch
- 3:36of things that make David look bad.
- 3:38Okay? So Chronicles is going to be very
- 3:41very pro-David. Whereas Samuel is going
- 3:45to actually tell you the truth about
- 3:46David, Chronicles is going to give you
- 3:49an angle on David that makes David uh
- 3:53what I would say David in the book of
- 3:56Chronicles is going to be the one who
- 3:58really like is is even more so than
- 4:02Solomon is really responsible for
- 4:04building the temple. And that is because
- 4:07Chronicles is written by our guy Ezra.
- 4:11Okay. So, if you've been rocking with us
- 4:12for the past couple of weeks, we've gone
- 4:14through Ezra, we've gone through
- 4:15Nehemiah, you know that Ezra is part of
- 4:19the process of God's people returning to
- 4:22Jerusalem after exile. So whereas Kings
- 4:27Samuel and Kings has a perspective on
- 4:31historical moments that are going from
- 4:34the the present linear into the future.
- 4:38Ezra has a perspective on these
- 4:41historical events that are also covered
- 4:43in Samuel and Kings, but it's looking
- 4:46back on the past. And so, I'll I'll read
- 4:49it for you. I'll I kind of read it how
- 4:51it is in my notes. Uh, and this our big
- 4:53big big context clue for the day. Okay.
- 4:56Ezra is writing his story, but he
- 4:59doesn't just tell the story of his and
- 5:02Nehemiah's return from exile. Okay. To
- 5:04give the story context, Ezra is going to
- 5:07begin the story that he's telling with
- 5:10Zerubbable's return and the rebuilding
- 5:12of the temple. Okay? Because the temple
- 5:14is everything for Ezra. Then Ezra is
- 5:18going to tell his story. So he's going
- 5:20to tell Zerubbable's story. Then he's
- 5:21going to tell his story. Then Ezra is
- 5:24going to tell Nehemiah's story. Okay? So
- 5:27I want you to kind of track how Ezra is
- 5:29telling the story in his present time.
- 5:32He's gonna couch his life in between
- 5:36Zerubbable and Nehemiah. All right? And
- 5:39then Ezra tells their joint story which
- 5:43ends with him teaching the people the
- 5:45Torah and their history. It is in that
- 5:48context, the renewing of the festivals,
- 5:51the restoring of the temple, the
- 5:53organizing of the Levites, the choirs,
- 5:56the priests, the refocus on the Torah,
- 5:59the great reset that will lead the
- 6:01people into the second temple period.
- 6:04Okay? Ezra is is the leader ushering
- 6:08people into the second temple period.
- 6:10What was the first temple? Solomon's
- 6:12temple. What's the second temple? the
- 6:14temple that Jesus is going to actually
- 6:16walk in. And so when we think about the
- 6:19second temple period, when we think
- 6:21about the the Judaism that Jesus
- 6:24actually engaged with, that is actually
- 6:27referred to as second temple Judaism.
- 6:30Okay, this is an entire period of time.
- 6:32Okay, it is then that he tells the
- 6:35people the story of the first temple. So
- 6:39first and 2 Chronicles or Chronicles is
- 6:42the story of how important the temple
- 6:45is, how important the line of David is,
- 6:48how important the Messiah is, how
- 6:50important the Davidic kingship is. And
- 6:54so if that's your point, then why would
- 6:58you include stories about Beth Sheba or
- 7:01uh David not being a good father or him
- 7:04killing Uriah? There's no need to have
- 7:06negative stories in Chronicles. So for
- 7:09anyone who's kind of like, h I read
- 7:11Kings, I read Samuel, this stuff in
- 7:13Chronicles seems like a repeat. It's not
- 7:16a repeat. First of all, it's not being
- 7:19told as if it's in the present marching
- 7:23towards the future. It's actually being
- 7:25told to a generation that is 600 years
- 7:30removed from the events being talked
- 7:32about. And we're looking back at the
- 7:35past. And so what is Ezra's big point
- 7:39for writing chronicles? It's this. If we
- 7:42are going to steward this second temple
- 7:45well, then we need to learn how the
- 7:48first temple was lost. Okay? How can
- 7:52Ezra's generation and following in the
- 7:56than the generations that are going to
- 7:57follow, how can they learn from their
- 8:00mistakes that they made with the first
- 8:02temple and never lose the temple again?
- 8:06That's the point of Chronicles. All
- 8:08right. Now, and like a good ancient
- 8:12ancient Jewish book, that's going to
- 8:15start with a genealogy. All right. So,
- 8:18let's get into our nerdy nuggets. Okay.
- 8:20I want to help us to kind of wrap our
- 8:22minds around what is going on with these
- 8:25genealogies. Genealogies are about two
- 8:27things. Okay? Number one, genealogies
- 8:30are about identity.
- 8:33Identity. The second thing that
- 8:35genealogies are about are rights. Okay?
- 8:38Genealogies are big on rights. Yes, it's
- 8:41their story. Okay? But these lists or
- 8:45this list proves who they are and that
- 8:48the land, the city of Jerusalem, this
- 8:52temple, this priesthood, this covenant
- 8:54is theirs. Okay? It's all right. It's
- 8:58funny because there's this church maybe
- 9:01like 30 minutes away from from, you
- 9:04know, where we're planting our church,
- 9:05the garden in Houston. And uh this
- 9:08church is like 158 or 159 years old. And
- 9:13uh the this church was founded in the
- 9:151800s by former slaves by by people who
- 9:20had been formerly enslaved. And you know
- 9:23they they built a church on two acres of
- 9:26land that they bought from the owner of
- 9:29the plantation. So they literally the
- 9:31the the man who was a slaveholding
- 9:34plantation owner sold two acres of his
- 9:38land of his plantation to these formerly
- 9:41enslaved people. They built a church.
- 9:43Well, guess what? 10 ancestors removed
- 9:47from those original freed enslaved
- 9:49people and the the original plantation
- 9:53owner who sold them that property. By
- 9:55the way, they sold the property. They
- 9:56sold them two acres of land for $84.
- 10:00$84 for two acres of land. Well, today
- 10:05those acres, that acreage is worth
- 10:08almost over a million dollars per acre.
- 10:10And so the great great great great great
- 10:14grandson, okay, the 10th ancestor
- 10:17removed has now sued this church. Okay.
- 10:21And because they've sold the whole
- 10:23plantation over the year, it's obviously
- 10:25no longer a plantation. They've sold off
- 10:28the land to subdivisions and to
- 10:30developers and they've built
- 10:31subdivisions all around it. And now this
- 10:34little church is a problem because we
- 10:37could sell this 2 acres and build more
- 10:40homes on it. And the it's funny, they
- 10:43literally went to court and it's like
- 10:45they are bringing a deed of sale from
- 10:49the 1800s to court. They're bringing
- 10:53court records to court. Like like these
- 10:57ARE NOTORIZED PAPERS FROM THE 1800S.
- 11:00WHY? Because genealogies
- 11:03don't just tell you a story. A genealogy
- 11:07tells you your rights. And of course, a
- 11:10judge here in Houston in the last couple
- 11:13of months just made a ruling that the
- 11:16church has rights to the acreage based
- 11:20on the deed that they signed in like
- 11:241860 whatever. So when you think about
- 11:28these genealogies, the genealogies that
- 11:30we have here in the book of Chronicles
- 11:32is actually telling the people in Ezra's
- 11:36generation the rights that they have to
- 11:38the land, the rights that they have to
- 11:41the building of the temple, their
- 11:43rights. This is not just about their
- 11:46identity or finding sto their story or
- 11:50couching their identity in the
- 11:52narrative. No, like this is 100%
- 11:56connected to their rights. And honestly,
- 12:00I think that Christians can learn a lot
- 12:02from our Jewish brothers and sisters.
- 12:04Like because they're so connected to
- 12:07their history, they know their rights.
- 12:10And honestly, whether and I'm not trying
- 12:12to make a political statement. promise
- 12:14you whether you're pro- Israel or not
- 12:17pro- Israel, that's not my that's not
- 12:19I'm that's not my place to dictate where
- 12:21you stand on the nation state of Israel.
- 12:24I don't care. Okay? That that's just not
- 12:26what I'm here to do. I'm here to just
- 12:27teach the Bible. But I will say this
- 12:30that Jews today, like Jewish people
- 12:33today, their whole argument for saying
- 12:36that they have a right to their land is
- 12:40based on genealogies like this in 1
- 12:43Chronicles. And so it is very very very
- 12:46powerful for a group of people to know,
- 12:50no, I know exactly who my father is. I
- 12:52know who my grandfather is. I know who
- 12:53my great-grandfather is. I know who my
- 12:54great great-grandfather is. I know who
- 12:56my 10th ancestor removed is. I know who
- 12:58my 20th is. Wow. Like, it doesn't just
- 13:01give me identity. It also gives me
- 13:04rights to begin to say, "Yeah, I know we
- 13:06haven't lived in this land for over 100
- 13:08years, but you know what? We we believe
- 13:12we have the right to displace
- 13:16Palestinians because the covenant says
- 13:19that we have a right to this land." So
- 13:22if you just want to understand the
- 13:23psyche of what's even happening in
- 13:26Israel, it would be really really
- 13:28important to understand why someone like
- 13:32Ezra would include super long
- 13:36genealogies in books like Chronicles.
- 13:39And again, I'm not trying to get you to
- 13:43believe one thing or the other when it
- 13:45comes to current political issues.
- 13:47That's just not my place. It's none of
- 13:49my business. My job is to give you nerdy
- 13:51facts so that you can understand the
- 13:53world around you. Okay? And Chronicles,
- 13:57when you read Chronicles as a Western
- 13:59person and you just go, man, name after
- 14:02name after name after name after name
- 14:04after name, what you're really saying is
- 14:08you don't understand why these names are
- 14:10important. And these names don't just
- 14:13give people identity. These names give
- 14:16people the authority to fight for the
- 14:19rights that they have as Jewish people.
- 14:23All right, here we go. Let me give you
- 14:25uh a couple more nerdy nuggets. Okay,
- 14:27chapter one of this genealogy is going
- 14:30to take you from Adam to Abraham. Okay,
- 14:33chapter two of this genealogy is going
- 14:35to focus on the tribe of Judah. Chapter
- 14:38three of this genealogy is all about the
- 14:41line of David to Zerubbable. All right?
- 14:45So, if you just kind of want to organize
- 14:46the genealogy, chapters one, I'll say
- 14:49that again, chapter one is all about
- 14:52Adam to Abraham. Chapter two is going to
- 14:54focus on the tribe of Judah. In chapter
- 14:56three is going to be all about the line
- 14:59of David all the way down to Zerubbable.
- 15:02All right. Now, couple more nuggets that
- 15:05I want to give you and then we'll get
- 15:07into our timeless truth for the day.
- 15:09These genealogies are very important and
- 15:13they're going to trace two specific
- 15:15lineages. One, the line of the promised
- 15:18messianic king. Okay? The the the
- 15:21entirety of the Hebrew Bible, but for
- 15:23sure Chronicles, is to lead you and I
- 15:27and anyone to have a hope for the
- 15:30Messiah. Okay? it. David is going to get
- 15:33set up as the ideal king, but really
- 15:36we're going to get down to the end of
- 15:38Chronicles and go, we need another king
- 15:40like David. Well, who's that king like
- 15:43David? That's right, the son of David.
- 15:45His name is Jesus. So, the whole goal of
- 15:48Chronicles is to tee up the messianic
- 15:51king, the son of David. And that's what
- 15:54the genealogies are doing. Number two,
- 15:57the descendants of Aaron. That's right,
- 15:59the priest. the priesthood. And that's
- 16:02the beautiful thing about Jesus. He's
- 16:03not just king, but he's also priest. And
- 16:06so, these genealogies are going to focus
- 16:09on the kingly line from David, but also
- 16:12the priestly line from Aaron. If you
- 16:15want to know how Chronicles, first and 2
- 16:18Chronicles really map on to the books of
- 16:21Samuel and Kings, I'll give you this,
- 16:23okay? 1 Chronicles is going to be
- 16:26parallel in terms of the history that it
- 16:28covers to 2 Samuel. Okay? So, 1
- 16:31Chronicles and 2 Samuel is covering the
- 16:35same story, the same narrative. Now,
- 16:37Chronicles is going to add things that
- 16:40second Samuel doesn't have, and
- 16:43Chronicles is going to omit things that
- 16:452 Samuel does have. So although they're
- 16:48covering the same story which is a aka
- 16:51the life of David, they're going to add
- 16:54things and omit things from one another.
- 16:57Second Chronicles then is going to cover
- 16:59the same period as both first and 2
- 17:03Kings. But if you can remember when we
- 17:05studied first and 2 kings, remember when
- 17:07we were in the book in first 2 kings, we
- 17:10would look at the northern kingdom of
- 17:11Israel, the southern kingdom of Judah,
- 17:12the northern kingdom of Israel, the
- 17:14southern kingdom of Judah, north, south,
- 17:16north, south, north, south. There's
- 17:18going to be a focus on which one? That's
- 17:22right, the southern kingdom of Judah.
- 17:24Why? Because David is from the tribe of
- 17:27Judah. Okay? and the Messiah will be the
- 17:30line of the tribe of Judah. And the
- 17:33temple is in Jerusalem and Jerusalem is
- 17:35in Judah. Okay, so Chronicles where
- 17:39first and 2 Kings is going to focus on
- 17:41the northern tribe of Israel and the
- 17:42southern kingdom of Judah. Chronicles is
- 17:45really, really, really going to
- 17:46emphasize what's happening in Judah.
- 17:49Okay? All roads lead to Judah. All roads
- 17:52lead to Jerusalem. That's where the
- 17:53temple is, and that's where the rightful
- 17:56heir of the kingship is. Not the
- 17:59northern kingdom of Israel, but the
- 18:00southern kingdom of Judah. All right,
- 18:02let's get into our timeless truth,
- 18:04family. The wait is over. My brand new
- 18:07book, Crushing [music] Chaos, is out now
- 18:11and available everywhere books are
- 18:13[music] sold. Literally today, I walked
- 18:16into a Barnes & Noble and I signed a
- 18:19bunch of copies at a physical location.
- 18:21So, you can grab this book [music] at a
- 18:24physical Barnes & Noble or you can go to
- 18:26a Books a Million or Amazon or anywhere
- 18:29books are sold and grab a copy. If you
- 18:32enjoy reading the Bible from an ancient
- 18:35perspective, if you understand that the
- 18:38beauty of scripture is actually knowing
- 18:39it in context, then you'll love this
- 18:42book. And if there's any chaos in your
- 18:44personal life, I [music] think that
- 18:46reading the Bible from an ancient
- 18:49perspective can actually help to crush
- 18:50the chaos in your life. I think this
- 18:53book is going to BE A NEW YORK TIMES
- 18:54BESTSELLER. I really do. I think we
- 18:56wrote a good one. I think you should get
- 18:58a copy today. All right, back to the
- 19:02episode. uh when we see this genealogy,
- 19:05most westerners just see a list of
- 19:07names, but I actually want to propose
- 19:10that this is not just a list of names,
- 19:12but this is a great cloud of witnesses.
- 19:16That these are people that have gone
- 19:18before us and we Gentiles have been
- 19:21grafted in to this lineage. That really
- 19:25when Paul says, "Who's the true Jew?
- 19:28that person who's circumcised outwardly
- 19:31or the person who's been circumcised in
- 19:33their heart, I I I want to let you know
- 19:36that until you as a Christian kind of
- 19:39begin to see like, no, no, no. The same
- 19:41way that this genealogy gives identity
- 19:44and rights to the Jewish people, as a
- 19:47believer, it gives me spiritual identity
- 19:50and spiritual rights. I believe that I
- 19:54am the seed of Abraham. Come on. You
- 19:56remember Sunday school, father Abraham
- 19:58had many sons and many his sons had
- 20:00father Abraham. Come on, what's the next
- 20:02part? I am one of them and so are you.
- 20:05So we are connected to this story. We're
- 20:09connected to the story which gives us
- 20:11identity, but it also gives us rights. I
- 20:13don't just walk around believing that
- 20:15I'm not blessed. I believe I'm I'm a
- 20:17blessed person. And I'm blessed not just
- 20:20because of who I am, but because of who
- 20:23my dad and grandfather and
- 20:25great-grandfather. And I know in the
- 20:27west we tend to get identity from
- 20:30individual achievements. So like your
- 20:32job and your education, but in an
- 20:35eastern world, your identity really does
- 20:37come from the family you come from, from
- 20:41the group. And I'm not saying one of
- 20:42those is good or bad or right or wrong,
- 20:45you know, or good or evil. What I am
- 20:48saying is I actually think a healthy
- 20:50merge of both is really, really good.
- 20:53And you got to see yourself as part of a
- 20:56bigger divine story. It's funny. On
- 20:59Thanksgiving this past year, 2025,
- 21:02I ran a turkey trot. That's right. I ran
- 21:04a 10K for the first time. I did it in an
- 21:07hour and 8 minutes. I'm pretty proud of
- 21:09myself, actually. I I would not consider
- 21:12myself a runner, but man, I I ran on
- 21:15Thanksgiving. And the way that the
- 21:17Turkey Trot here in Houston works is
- 21:20that you're literally just running
- 21:22straight down one long road and at the
- 21:243.2 mile mark, you just make a U-turn
- 21:27and run straight back the other way.
- 21:30It's just one long line down and a long
- 21:32line the other way. And and so I we were
- 21:36maybe at mile two, maybe one and a half
- 21:40running one way and all of a sudden I
- 21:43start seeing people who are at the front
- 21:45of the line flying past me. At first I'm
- 21:49thinking to myself, they're running the
- 21:50wrong way. What are they doing? And then
- 21:52I realize, oh no, they are ahead of the
- 21:56line. Like I finished in an hour and 8
- 21:58minutes. These people are about to
- 22:00finish the entire race in like 30
- 22:02minutes. It's like this is nuts. And you
- 22:04want to know at first I began to see
- 22:06them and I was confused, maybe even
- 22:08discouraged. And then you want to know
- 22:10what real what I realized? I started to
- 22:12get pumped up cuz I began to realize, oh
- 22:15wow, you have been where I am right now.
- 22:21And you running past me means that
- 22:24you're ahead of me. And you running past
- 22:26me means that what I'm doing is
- 22:29possible. And then I just begin to see
- 22:31in the spirit that Abraham has gone
- 22:33before me. Oh man, that David has gone
- 22:37before me. That Moses has gone before
- 22:39me. That there have been Christians who
- 22:41have been martyed that have gone before
- 22:42me. That John has gone before me. That
- 22:45Paul has gone before me. That Peter has
- 22:48gone before me. That I'm not the first
- 22:50person to take bold risks for God. I'm
- 22:52not the first person to try to do
- 22:54something crazy for God. I'm not the
- 22:56first person to experience any kind of
- 22:58social persecution for God. I'm not the
- 23:01first person to stand up for truth. No,
- 23:02no, no, no. I belong to a long lineage
- 23:05of spiritual ancestors who were fed to
- 23:08lions in the coliseum. I belong to a
- 23:10long list of spiritual ancestors who
- 23:12have like the freed slaves that were
- 23:15here in eight in the 1800s got their
- 23:18freedom and and got enough money to buy
- 23:22two acres of land to build God's church.
- 23:26I'm not doing something that's novel or
- 23:28new. Nope. I'm just building God's
- 23:30church. And guess what? I'm connected to
- 23:32a long line of people who have been
- 23:35building God's church. And you know what
- 23:37the enemy wants to tell you? You're by
- 23:38yourself. You're the first person who's
- 23:40ever done this. You're the first person
- 23:42who's ever broken generational curses.
- 23:43You're the first this. You're the first
- 23:45that. And you're not. You may be the
- 23:47first in your family, but actually
- 23:49you're connected to the family of God,
- 23:51which means you're not the first. And if
- 23:54they've run the race, you can run the
- 23:57race. And as people started to fly past
- 23:59me, I started to run faster. I started
- 24:01to get excited because I began to see,
- 24:04you know what, these people who are
- 24:06running ahead of me have actually proven
- 24:09that there is nothing that's new under
- 24:13the sun. No temptation that has seized
- 24:15you except that which is common to man.
- 24:17If they overcame, I can overcome. And
- 24:20that's not just true for Ezra. That's
- 24:22not just true for Nehemiah. That's not
- 24:24just true for David or any of the
- 24:26characters in the book of Chronicles.
- 24:28That's true for you. That's true for me.
- 24:31That's a timeless truth. All right,
- 24:34FAMILY. TOMORROW WE GOT DAY 3:47. We're
- 24:37going to be looking at 1 Chronicles
- 24:39CHAPTERS 4, FIVE, and six. Uh, you know,
