- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible
- 0:13department.com to download a reading
- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 3:45. We are
- 0:27looking at Nehemiah chapters 11, 12, and
- 0:3013. Today, today we get to wave bye-bye
- 0:33to Nehemiah. AND TOMORROW WE SAY HELLO
- 0:37to our final book of the Bible. That's
- 0:40right. First and Second Chronicles is
- 0:43originally one book. Now, I know there
- 0:45are two books in our modern English
- 0:47translations, but we're down to the
- 0:49wire. Like, I cannot believe it. Day
- 0:513:45 means there's 20 days left in the
- 0:56year. If you've made it this far, I'm
- 0:58insanely
- 0:59proud of you, especially if you're on a
- 1:02345 day streak. I want to challenge you
- 1:05actually to never go another year
- 1:07without reading the Bible every single
- 1:08day. Uh it doesn't have to be the whole
- 1:11Bible in a year, but you should read
- 1:13God's word every single day. It's a mana
- 1:17from heaven. Man doesn't live on bread
- 1:18alone, but on every word that proceeds
- 1:20from the mouth of God. So, I'm insanely
- 1:22proud of you. I hope you notice a
- 1:24difference in your own soul, your own
- 1:26self-t talk, in your own mind, in your
- 1:29own self-control. Anywh who, all right,
- 1:32if you've read Nehemiah chapter uh 11,
- 1:35chapters 11 to13, then we are ready to
- 1:39rock and roll with context clues, nerdy
- 1:41nuggets, and a timeless truth. If you
- 1:43haven't done the reading today, I want
- 1:45to challenge you. Stop this video, pause
- 1:48the audio, go get the reading done, and
- 1:51then come back. All right, for our
- 1:54context for the day, I just want to
- 1:56remind you of things we've already said.
- 1:58It's our last day in the book of
- 2:00Nehemiah. So, it's not like I'm going to
- 2:01give you some brand new context for the
- 2:04historical or cultural moment. All the
- 2:06context has really been given to you
- 2:08already in order to understand the book
- 2:11of Nehemiah. The details that I just
- 2:13want to remind you of is that this is
- 2:15obviously a post exelic book of the
- 2:18Bible. Ezra and Nehemiah were originally
- 2:20one book. And there are three big words
- 2:24that you're going to have to remember in
- 2:26order to understand both Ezra and
- 2:27Nehemiah. And that is return, rebuild,
- 2:31repent. Return, rebuild, repent. And
- 2:34wouldn't it be awesome if it was that
- 2:36easy? return to the Lord, rebuild your
- 2:40life and continue patterns of
- 2:42repentance, daily repentance. That
- 2:44honestly is a framework for the
- 2:47Christian life. Uh but as we are going
- 2:50to realize or as we are going to
- 2:52discover at the end of chapter 13, man,
- 2:57that repentance part sometimes just
- 3:00doesn't stick. and the renewal, the
- 3:03revival, the repentance that Ezra and
- 3:06Nehemiah fought for, prayed for, it does
- 3:10not stick. And so the book actually does
- 3:12end on this kind of like anticlimactic
- 3:16like what in the world is going on kind
- 3:18of a note. And so we'll get there at
- 3:21chapter 13. Not like I said, not a ton
- 3:23of context clues today. you already have
- 3:25all the context you need in order to
- 3:28properly execute the end of the book of
- 3:31Nehemiah. So let's dive into nerdy
- 3:33nuggets. First nerdy nugget, if you go
- 3:35to Nehemiah 11 verse one, it says this.
- 3:38Now the leaders of the people settled in
- 3:40Jerusalem. The rest of the people cast
- 3:43lots to bring one out of every 10 of
- 3:47them to live in Jerusalem, the holy
- 3:48city, while the remaining nine were to
- 3:51stay in the in their own towns. So the
- 3:54people commended all who volunteered to
- 3:57live in Jerusalem. So Jerusalem is still
- 3:59not like a dope place to live. Okay?
- 4:03Like so the people instead of not
- 4:06instead of but in addition to giving a
- 4:10tithe or recommitting that they are
- 4:12going to tithe to the Levites, they
- 4:15decide to also tithe one out of every 10
- 4:18people. They tithe their population into
- 4:22the city of Jerusalem because honestly
- 4:25Jerusalem is not a very very desirable
- 4:27place to live. And what good is it if we
- 4:29got a nice new fancy awesome temple and
- 4:33we got these nice new awesome fancy
- 4:35walls but no humans to go worship at the
- 4:39temple or to be protected by the walls.
- 4:41And so, uh, Nehemiah 11 starts out with
- 4:45the people getting a essentially a
- 4:48lottery system going for who's going to
- 4:51volunteer as tribute to go live in the
- 4:53capital. Okay, that is uh chapter 11
- 4:56verse one. Uh, number two, second nerdy
- 4:58nugget. When we get into chapter 12, I
- 5:02mean, I just love chapter 12. Okay,
- 5:05first of all, we got multiple choirs, we
- 5:08got musicians, we got praise, we got
- 5:10worship. I mean, it's feeling a lot like
- 5:14David again. Remember when we were
- 5:16studying through 1 and 2 Samuel and then
- 5:19we really like we're studying the
- 5:21Psalms, which really got us into books
- 5:24like 1 and 2 Chronicles. Um, those books
- 5:27are gonna really emphasize how much of a
- 5:31worship leader and worship architect
- 5:33David is. And man, Nehemiah and Ezra fit
- 5:37in that vein. They they are big on
- 5:40worship. Okay, it says this in chapter
- 5:4412 uh verse 24. And the leaders of the
- 5:47Levites were, you know, hard name to
- 5:50pronounce, hard name to pronounce, hard
- 5:51name to pronounce, son of hard name to
- 5:53pronounce. and their associates. Their
- 5:56names aren't the most important for for
- 5:58the point that I'm trying to make, so I
- 6:00skipped over them. And their associates
- 6:01who stood opposite them to give praise
- 6:04and thanksgiving. One section responding
- 6:07to the other as prescribed by David, the
- 6:10man of God. So, uh, Nehemiah and Ezra
- 6:14are reinstituting a style of worship
- 6:18that was prescribed by David, the man of
- 6:21God. And uh if Ezra is the final
- 6:24architect of the Hebrew Bible, he's a
- 6:26big David fan. And uh as we gear up to
- 6:30get into first and 2 Chronicles, you're
- 6:32going to learn quickly that uh whoever
- 6:35the author of Chronicles is is a big big
- 6:37big big David fan. Then you know there's
- 6:41two choirs. Okay. Well, actually, let's
- 6:43go to chapter 12 verse 27. And at the
- 6:47dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the
- 6:50Levites were sought out from where they
- 6:52lived and were brought to Jerusalem to
- 6:54celebrate joyfully the dedication with
- 6:58songs of thanksgiving and with the music
- 7:02of symbols, harps, and liars. The
- 7:05musicians were also brought together
- 7:08with the region around Jerusalem from
- 7:10the villages of the Netophathites.
- 7:14Netophathites. Netoathites. Beautiful.
- 7:17We love you, Netophathites. And from
- 7:19Beth Gilgal, from the area of Gea in
- 7:22Azmth. For the musicians had built
- 7:26villages for themselves around
- 7:28Jerusalem. When the priests and Levites
- 7:30had purified themselves ceremonially,
- 7:33they purified the people, the gates, and
- 7:35the wall. I just want you to get the
- 7:38sense of how much of an emphasis there
- 7:41are on musicians. Okay, symbols, harps,
- 7:44liars, like musicians are integral to
- 7:49worship in Jerusalem. Okay, in chapter
- 7:5312:38, it talks about the second choir.
- 7:56And then chap 12:40, the two choirs. And
- 8:00then it gets down to verse 42, the end
- 8:03of verse 42, the choirs, plural choirs,
- 8:07sang under the direction of Jezraaya.
- 8:10Verse 43. And on that day they offered
- 8:13great sacrifices, rejoicing because God
- 8:16had given them great joy. The women and
- 8:20children also rejoiced. The sound of
- 8:23rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard
- 8:26far away. You can begin to see this
- 8:28connection between praise and worship
- 8:31and rejoicing like God had given them
- 8:35joy. And on the day they offer great
- 8:37sacrifice, rejoicing because God had
- 8:39given them great joy. Rejoicing because
- 8:42God had given them great joy. And it's
- 8:45almost like a a non vicious cycle. It's
- 8:48it's a good cycle. God gives you joy and
- 8:50so you rejoice. And what happens when
- 8:52you rejoice? You get more joy. And then
- 8:54what happens when you got joy? You
- 8:56rejoice. Talk about the vicious cycle of
- 8:59joy. And so I I want to highlight really
- 9:02really quick just how important worship
- 9:05is for the life of the believer. How
- 9:09important worship is for the the folks
- 9:12who architected worship to be this way.
- 9:15Remember we've talked about this a lot
- 9:17that worship was originally sacrifice
- 9:19and that's it. And then it it was
- 9:21serving and then David instituted
- 9:24singing. Okay. So music as worship is
- 9:28super super super super super super
- 9:29super important. Like actually I want to
- 9:32challenge you like you should sing like
- 9:35when you're at church like you should
- 9:37sing loud like you should rejoice. Like
- 9:41so often you know people will tell me
- 9:43like oh no I'm just being reflective.
- 9:45I'm just being contemplative. No, that's
- 9:47dope. But there's also a place for
- 9:50exuberant, joyfilled,
- 9:52like thanksgiving and praise. And uh
- 9:56actually, I'm I'm going to be a little
- 9:57nerdy. Like Martin Luther, the man who
- 9:59led the Protestant Reformation, he
- 10:02actually called uh music a handmaiden to
- 10:06theology. He said music is only second
- 10:10to theology. Like, but what the church
- 10:12needs is theology and music. I don't
- 10:14know if you know this but Martin Luther
- 10:16like the great reformer the great
- 10:17theologian also wrote hymns. So uh I
- 10:21remember learning a mighty fortress is
- 10:24our god a bull work never failing like I
- 10:28remember learning Martin Luther's hymn
- 10:30when I was in sixth or seventh grade and
- 10:33we were studying it according like based
- 10:35on theology. I think that revival always
- 10:38has yesterday I said revival starts with
- 10:42a return to the words of God to the word
- 10:46to the written word of of the Lord. But
- 10:49revival also carries a sound and when I
- 10:54think of church movements that have
- 10:56marked the earth or at least their
- 10:58generation those movements come with a
- 11:01sound. there's a unique sound uh that
- 11:05gets released and music is powerful.
- 11:06Martin Luther said this. This is a
- 11:09straight Luther quote. Uh by the way,
- 11:12Luther's contemporaries didn't like
- 11:14music. Okay? So, in contrast to both
- 11:18Olwingley,
- 11:20you may be familiar with with Olwingley.
- 11:24I'm struggling with this man's first and
- 11:26last name. Golly. Olrich Zwingley.
- 11:29>> Eric Zwingley. Eric, in contrast to both
- 11:33Eric Zingley, who allowed no music of
- 11:36any kind in his services, and John
- 11:39Calvin, who would have none of the art
- 11:42in artifice of music and worship except
- 11:45for unaccompanied congregational songs.
- 11:47So John Calvin was big on ac cappella.
- 11:50Uh there's actually a whole movement in
- 11:52America today called Church of Christ,
- 11:54which don't do instruments, no
- 11:56musicians, just straight voices. Now,
- 12:00because they don't have musicians, their
- 12:02voices are beautiful. I mean, these are
- 12:04some of the most angelic sounding choirs
- 12:06ever. But anyway, it's it's a massive
- 12:10misinterpretation of scripture, but
- 12:11that's neither here nor there. Uh Luther
- 12:14encouraged the most sophisticated music
- 12:16of his time, Gregorian chant in
- 12:18classical uh polifany together with the
- 12:22simpler congregational song of the
- 12:24choir, the corral. So there's all this
- 12:27chatter in with Luther's contemporaries
- 12:30about whether or not music is, you know,
- 12:33fleshly or worldly or this or that. But
- 12:36he was a big proponent of it. And this
- 12:38is a straight quote by Luther. He says
- 12:40this, "I am not satisfied with him who
- 12:43despises music as all fanatics do." So
- 12:46he's calling Zwingley and John Calvin
- 12:49fanatics. Like these are these are
- 12:50fanatics. They don't like music. from
- 12:52music is an endowment and a gift of God,
- 12:55not an invention of man. It also drives
- 12:59away the devil and makes people people
- 13:02cheerful. Like Martin Luther, okay, like
- 13:05the Catholic monk who protested against
- 13:08the Catholic Church, who started the
- 13:10Protestant Reformation, that guy like
- 13:13Martin Luther is like it drives away the
- 13:15devil. Like my man's smart enough to
- 13:17understand no music like like worship
- 13:21music like praise music drives away the
- 13:24devil and makes people cheerful. One
- 13:27forgets all anger, unchaseness, pride
- 13:31and other vices. I place music next to
- 13:34theology and give it the highest praise.
- 13:37Music is the handmaiden to theology.
- 13:40That's Martin Luther. And I couldn't
- 13:41agree more. I I I tried to find like the
- 13:44nerdiest way to say you need to sing in
- 13:48church. Like you need to sing loud. You
- 13:51need to belt it out, man. Like you got
- 13:53to you got to go for it. Like theology
- 13:57and music go hand in hand. Uh I'm a
- 14:00theology nerd. I'm a Bible nerd. But if
- 14:03you did if you don't know me outside of
- 14:05this podcast, you have no idea that I
- 14:08love the presence of the Lord. I love
- 14:11singing to the Lord. Now, I sound
- 14:13terrible when I do it, but I love
- 14:15singing to the Lord. And we cannot have
- 14:19churches where we only focus on the word
- 14:22of God and not the presence of God.
- 14:25Like, because what's happening in
- 14:27chapter 12, we're on the heels of a
- 14:29revival that's been sparked by a return
- 14:32to the words of God. And what do we need
- 14:35to do? Get the choirs out here, man. Get
- 14:37the musicians, dude. like let's sing to
- 14:41God and it drives the devil away and
- 14:45makes people people cheerful. So I'd say
- 14:49yeah I I think that music is powerful
- 14:53and um music is an incredible tool that
- 14:57God's given us to to bless his name to
- 15:00praise him and I think it should be a
- 15:03massive emphasis. It should be a great
- 15:05focus. family, the wait is over. My
- 15:08brand new book, Crushing Chaos, is out
- 15:12now and available everywhere books are
- 15:15[music] sold literally today. I walked
- 15:18into a Barnes & Noble and I signed a
- 15:20bunch of copies at a physical location.
- 15:22So, you can grab this book at a physical
- 15:26Barnes & Noble or you can go to a Books
- 15:28a Million or Amazon or anywhere books
- 15:31are sold and grab a copy. If you enjoy
- 15:34reading the Bible from an ancient
- 15:36perspective, if you understand that the
- 15:39beauty of scripture is actually knowing
- 15:41it in context, then you'll love this
- 15:44book. And if there's any chaos in your
- 15:46personal life, I think that reading the
- 15:49Bible from an ancient perspective can
- 15:51actually help to crush the chaos in your
- 15:53life. I think this book is going to BE A
- 15:55NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER. I really do.
- 15:57I think we wrote a good one. I think you
- 16:00should get a copy today. All right, back
- 16:03to the episode. One of the walls that's
- 16:05going to get mentioned, obviously
- 16:06Nehemiah is all about rebuilding the
- 16:07walls, is the Broad Wall. And I've been
- 16:10fortunate enough to go to Jerusalem now,
- 16:12uh, to go to Israel now four times.
- 16:15Every time I go to Israel, I go to
- 16:16Jerusalem. And the Broad Wall is a wall,
- 16:20a part of the wall that Nehemiah rebuilt
- 16:22that you can literally go see. So again,
- 16:25whenever archaeology just proves the
- 16:28stuff that's happened in the Bible is
- 16:29real, that's always a plus. So the broad
- 16:32wall just a nerdy little nugget. Okay.
- 16:34So let's move from nerdy nuggets into
- 16:37the close of the book. Nehemiah chapter
- 16:3913. You would imagine, right? Like, hey,
- 16:42we returned, we rebuilt, the people
- 16:44repented, our work's done. No, because
- 16:48for whatever reason, it's easy to build
- 16:50a wall. And this is going to get into my
- 16:51timeless truth. It's easy to build a
- 16:54wall. It's hard to build people. Cuz for
- 16:57whatever reason, somebody uh I was
- 16:59around a a pastor recently, his name is
- 17:02Pastor Dino Rizzo. He said, "You want to
- 17:04understand like church planting?"
- 17:06Obviously, I'm in the middle of church
- 17:07planting, so I'm excited about that. He
- 17:09said, uh, turk planting is like imagine
- 17:12you set this table up like this and then
- 17:14you you go to leave and somebody while
- 17:16you're gone just goes
- 17:20and then you come back like who touched
- 17:22who messed with the way I set this? It's
- 17:26like and then you know you as the leader
- 17:29you kind of put everything back like the
- 17:30the way that it should go and and then
- 17:33you know you he's like all right Manny
- 17:35and then you know you're going to leave
- 17:36for a speaking engagement or you're
- 17:37going to leave for a couple of days and
- 17:39guess what you're going to find he's
- 17:40like that that's that's pastoral
- 17:42ministry and you come back and you're
- 17:44like who touch who messed with the way
- 17:47that I left this and the reality is that
- 17:50building a wall easy cuz like once a
- 17:54wall is built it's built but the issue
- 17:56with building people is that you think
- 18:00an issue is fixed. You think an issue is
- 18:02addressed and then all of a sudden what
- 18:04you begin to realize is that insecurity
- 18:06issue that you passed someone through is
- 18:09not like it's a permanent fix. There is
- 18:11no cruise control when it comes to
- 18:13discipling people. So we get to Nehemiah
- 18:16chapter 13 and we get to Nehemiah
- 18:19chapter 13 and there are three problems.
- 18:21The people have just agreed to covenant
- 18:24vows and guess what? They're already
- 18:25broken. By the time we get to the end of
- 18:27the book, you realize that everything
- 18:28that people vowed to do, they're already
- 18:30not doing. Three things that they are
- 18:32doing wrong. Number one, the people are
- 18:35not supporting the Levites uh
- 18:37financially. Okay? Um number two,
- 18:40they're breaking Sabbath. And then
- 18:42number three, they're marrying
- 18:43foreigners. These are three things that
- 18:45they said they would stop doing. We're
- 18:47going to obey the Sabbath. We're going
- 18:49to stop marrying foreigners. We're going
- 18:50to support the Levites financially. And
- 18:53Nehemiah has to rebuke people all
- 18:56throughout chapter 13 because they are
- 18:58literally immediately walking in
- 19:00disobedience. So if you are not down to
- 19:03keep your hands on the wheel constantly,
- 19:08then then pastoral ministry may
- 19:10overwhelm you because pastoral ministry
- 19:13is oh my gosh, we celebrate in chapter
- 19:1512. We renewed the covenant. Oh my gosh,
- 19:18people are repenting. This is amazing.
- 19:20you're already disobeying God. So, it's
- 19:23like that's that is pastoral ministry. I
- 19:27remember I but you know the I spent
- 19:29seven years on the road as a traveling
- 19:30evangelist and I would say things like,
- 19:32"Yeah, I'm just not going to repeat
- 19:34myself. If I'm pastoring you and I tell
- 19:36you something and and you make me repeat
- 19:39myself over and over and over again, I'm
- 19:40just going to stop talking to you." And
- 19:42now I'm actually like, you know, in the
- 19:45launch season of a church and I realize,
- 19:48wow, that was so ridiculous of me to
- 19:50say. I repeat myself a lot now. I'm I'm
- 19:52now leading a church and I find myself
- 19:55having to repeat myself all the time.
- 19:57All the time. And in my head, I'm like,
- 20:00now what? You got it. You didn't hear it
- 20:03the last time I said it. Okay, cool. And
- 20:04and as a leader, you you've got to be
- 20:06someone who's just like vigilant. The
- 20:08moment you fall asleep at the wheel,
- 20:10people are gonna wall out. And so they
- 20:12literally they get the choirs, they get
- 20:14the musicians, they celebrate, they
- 20:16repent. That's chapters like 10, 11, 12.
- 20:21Like these people are they're this is
- 20:24they're about to end on a high note. No.
- 20:26Chapter 13 11. So I rebuked the
- 20:28officials and asked them, why is the
- 20:31house of God neglected? Then I called
- 20:33them together and stationed them at
- 20:35their post. I'm going to station you
- 20:37here. Stop moving. Oh man. And then what
- 20:40what does it say again? He's going to
- 20:42have to rebuke them again. Literally,
- 20:44this is just a chapter of rebuke. Verse
- 20:4625 of chapter 13. I rebuked them and
- 20:49called curses down on them. I beat some
- 20:52of the men and pulled out their hair.
- 20:55Nehemiah is so frustrated that he just
- 20:58has to keep telling people the same
- 20:59thing over and over and over and over
- 21:02that he finally freaking punches
- 21:05somebody in the face and pulls their
- 21:06hair out. THAT'S A BAD DAY AT the office
- 21:09right there, man. You pulling people's
- 21:11hair out and punching them, bro. Your
- 21:14grace may have lifted, but that's real.
- 21:17And I feel like sometimes in churches,
- 21:18we preach every other part of Nehemiah,
- 21:20but don't preach chapter 13 because
- 21:22nobody knows what to do with chapter 13,
- 21:24cuz it's just kind of like a I cannot
- 21:27believe that none of this worked. It's
- 21:29easy to rebuild the temple. It's easy to
- 21:31rebuild walls. You know what's hard? To
- 21:34rebuild people. and for those people to
- 21:37just stay the the way that you put them.
- 21:41As a leader, you're constantly building
- 21:43people, fixing people, putting the
- 21:45broken piece of their life back, and you
- 21:46just kind of want to like like a Lego
- 21:48set. There's a season where my son was
- 21:50really into Legos. He still is into
- 21:52Legos, but then he would like try to
- 21:54play with the Legos. And of course, he's
- 21:57four. He drops stuff, he throws stuff,
- 21:59and the Legos would break. And then we'd
- 22:01have to rebuild it again, and then they
- 22:02would break. There was a part of me that
- 22:04was like, I'm about to super glue these
- 22:06freaking Legos together, dude. I'm tired
- 22:10of putting this back together again over
- 22:13and over and over and over and over. And
- 22:16I remember being frustrated that my son
- 22:18was doing that and the Holy Spirit just
- 22:19going, "Welcome to pastoring people.
- 22:22You're going to sit down, do marriage
- 22:23counseling with people. You're going to
- 22:24give them all the tools to fix it. And
- 22:26guess what? They're going to go break it
- 22:27and they're going to come back to you
- 22:28like, "Pastor, what do we do? You're
- 22:29gonna help that guy like defeat
- 22:32pornography and he's going to go and and
- 22:34he's going to break it and he's going to
- 22:35come back and be like, "Ah, watch your
- 22:36porn again, pastor." You're gonna help
- 22:38somebody get sober and then they may
- 22:40relapse and they're going to come back
- 22:42like, "Ah, P." What are you going to do?
- 22:43You're going to you're going to you're
- 22:44going to keep fixing the Lego set.
- 22:46That's what you're going to do cuz there
- 22:47is no way to superglue the Lego set. At
- 22:50at some point, you just got to buckle up
- 22:52and just go, "Yep, this is not a
- 22:54goaloriented
- 22:55job. This is like a people oriented job.
- 22:59And there is no such thing as set it and
- 23:01forget it or cruise control when it
- 23:03comes to the relational aspect of
- 23:05ministry.
- 23:07People are a constant project. They're a
- 23:11constant project. And I don't mean
- 23:12people are a project like in a negative
- 23:13way. I I just mean you're constantly
- 23:16having to build them. And the moment
- 23:18you're not building them, they're it's
- 23:19going to break. And you as a leader, you
- 23:22have to like if you're in ministry, you
- 23:24have to know, hey, hey, hey, you got to
- 23:26stay focused. You can't fall asleep at
- 23:28the wheel. You got to constantly be
- 23:29building, constantly be building,
- 23:30constantly be building. Because if
- 23:32you're not building them up, they will
- 23:34break themselves down. The walls are
- 23:36easy. People are hard. So, chapter 13,
- 23:39we're going to find Nehemiah. He's going
- 23:42to repeat the same phrase after each
- 23:44issue. Okay? So, people are not
- 23:45supporting the Levites with their
- 23:46finances. That's issue number one.
- 23:48People are breaking the Sabbath. That's
- 23:49issue number two. And people are
- 23:50marrying foreigners. That's issue number
- 23:52three. at the conclusion of him rebuking
- 23:55each group for that issue, he's then
- 23:58going to give a repeated phrase. Uh, and
- 24:00honestly, I think that's the repeated
- 24:02phrase that every pastor uh, every
- 24:04pastor is probably going to feel seen as
- 24:06we begin to give this repeated phrase.
- 24:08So verse 14, this is the phrase at the
- 24:12end of issue number one says, "Remember
- 24:15me for this my God and do not blot out
- 24:18what I have so faithfully done for the
- 24:21house of my God in its services.
- 24:24Remember me God please Lord God please
- 24:27Lord God when you think about me can you
- 24:30please remember that that I I have
- 24:35labored in the house of the Lord and he
- 24:38does not mean physically building the
- 24:40bricks of the temple he means building
- 24:42the house of God which is the people and
- 24:44then it says this in verse 22 the next
- 24:47one remember me for this also my God and
- 24:51show mercy to me according to your great
- 24:53love and And then last verse 31, I also
- 24:56made provisions for contributions of
- 24:58wood designated at times and for first
- 25:00fruits. Remember me with favor my God.
- 25:03Remember me, God. God, remember me. Help
- 25:06me. Give me strength. Renew me. Like
- 25:08remember me, please. Like God, when you
- 25:12think about your boy Nehemiah, can you
- 25:14just remember me? Cuz clearly the people
- 25:17don't remember what I just told them. So
- 25:19God, I need someone to remember. And
- 25:21obviously you're the only one that has
- 25:23the ability to remember not just what
- 25:25I've said because you don't need me to
- 25:26say anything to you, but what I've done
- 25:28because the people don't remember. And
- 25:30that's it's the hardest part of pastoral
- 25:32ministry. So if you are at a church and
- 25:36you are under a leader that's actively
- 25:38building you up, counseling you,
- 25:40advising you, loving you, like building
- 25:43you up, try, just please try
- 25:47to not break down the things that your
- 25:50pastor is building in you. Just try. And
- 25:52if you're a pastor, just buckle up
- 25:54because you're going to have to build
- 25:56people and then deal with the
- 25:57frustration that they have broken the
- 26:00very thing that you've built for them.
- 26:02and in them. And that's not just true
- 26:04for Nehemiah. That's true for me. That's
- 26:07true for you. That's true for church.
- 26:09That's true for ministry. Period.
- 26:11Building walls, building temples, easy.
- 26:15Building people, that's hard. And if
- 26:17you're not careful, you'll end up
- 26:19rebuking them, calling down curses on
- 26:21them, beating them, and pulling their
- 26:23hair out because of your frustration.
- 26:25And the reality is this. People are
- 26:27frustrating. They are. But you never
- 26:30have a reason to beat them. Pull their
- 26:33hair out. Call curses down on them.
- 26:35Rebuke. Okay, cool. But the curses, the
- 26:39the the beating and the pulling out of
- 26:41the hair, that's a bit much Nehemiah.
- 26:43And uh I I'm not shocked as to why
- 26:46nobody preaches about Nehemiah chapter
- 26:4813. Cuz Nehemiah is whing out. And if
- 26:50you want to avoid becoming like Nehemiah
- 26:53as a leader, then you are going to have
- 26:55to set some realistic expectations
- 26:57because all disappointment is the
- 26:59product of unrealistic expectations. And
- 27:02that's true. But Nehemiah, Ezra,
- 27:05Zerubbable, me, and you. It's timelessly
- 27:08true. All right, I'll see you tomorrow
- 27:10for day 3:46 as we walk into a brand new
- 27:14book of the Bible. We'll be in
