- 0:24Hey family, welcome to day 343. We are
- 0:27continuing our trek through the book of
- 0:29Nehemiah. Today we are in Nehemiah
- 0:31chapters four, five, six, and seven. All
- 0:36right. Uh four solid chapters of the
- 0:39Bible. Solid solid reading. I had a
- 0:42blast reading these chapters. And
- 0:43honestly, I'M INSPIRED BY NEHEMIAH. And
- 0:47no wonder why there are so many sermon
- 0:49series attached to Nehemiah as it
- 0:52relates to building projects and
- 0:55building programs. I don't know if
- 0:56you're familiar with this, but in the
- 0:57Christian space, it's almost like every
- 1:00time there is a new campus or a building
- 1:03that that uh leaders are believing God
- 1:06for and you're trying to raise a lot of
- 1:09money from your church or doing a
- 1:11capital campaign, typically people pull
- 1:14out the book of Nehemiah and and I get
- 1:16it. You know, it's like, hey, you know,
- 1:19there's something to build and building
- 1:22is going to require a lot of our energy
- 1:24and a lot of our resources. And so,
- 1:26building is a part of what it means to
- 1:29be a believer. I I think that building
- 1:31is just part and parcel of the DNA of
- 1:34being a part of God's people. I I I I
- 1:37see myself as a builder. Uh I I see a
- 1:40lot of Nehemiah's characteristics in me.
- 1:42You know, I want to build big people. I
- 1:44want to build an awesome organization.
- 1:46and I want to build companies that help
- 1:47people. My dad was a construction
- 1:49worker, so there's I I'm not necessarily
- 1:52someone who can construct things
- 1:54physically with my hands, but man, just
- 1:56the kind of mind to construct
- 2:00organizations, businesses, people, I
- 2:02love it. Obviously, I'm also in the
- 2:05middle of planting a church right now.
- 2:06And so, it's just it's building season,
- 2:09just building people. Typically, we're
- 2:11in a conference room, me and the team,
- 2:14and we just got a bunch of names of like
- 2:16370 people who have joined our launch
- 2:18team, and we're like, where do we put
- 2:19everybody? How do we build this so that
- 2:23systems work, so that policies and
- 2:26procedures work? I love building, and I
- 2:29like building things from scratch. And
- 2:31I'm seeing that in my son right now. He
- 2:32loves doing Legos. And I'm seeing that
- 2:35thing in him that is like, okay, this
- 2:37piece goes here, and this goes here, and
- 2:39this goes here. that desire to build. I
- 2:41just I just uh want to encourage anybody
- 2:44who's listening to this right now and
- 2:46you're trying to build you're trying to
- 2:48build your life, you know, you're trying
- 2:49to build it and brick by brick based on
- 2:52a blueprint. And so, uh I'm I I can I
- 2:56can identify with Nehemiah. I'm I'm
- 2:58reading this in a in a season of my life
- 3:00where I'm building and I see myself as a
- 3:02builder and I hope you see yourself that
- 3:03way, too. Uh all right. Our context
- 3:06clues, to be honest, are the same as
- 3:08yesterday. Okay. So we're in Nehemiah
- 3:10chapters 45 6 and 7. [snorts] Nothing
- 3:13about our context has changed from
- 3:15yesterday. Nehemiah is finally in
- 3:18Jerusalem. And the same way that
- 3:21Zerubbabel was faced with opposition.
- 3:24Same way that Ezra comes back and
- 3:26they're mixed marriages which is
- 3:27opposition. Nehemiah gets here. He
- 3:30they're going to start building and of
- 3:32course there's going to be opposition.
- 3:34So chapter 4 verse one starts out with
- 3:36these words. When San Ballot heard that
- 3:39we were rebuilding the wall, he became
- 3:41angry and was greatly in incest. Not
- 3:44like incest uh but like incense like
- 3:47like lit on fire, right? Like he was
- 3:49angry. He was upset. He ridiculed the
- 3:51Jews and in the presence of his
- 3:54associates and the army of Samaria.
- 3:57Okay, so Sam Ballad has arrived with an
- 3:59army. Okay, he said, "What are those
- 4:03feeble Jews doing? Will they restore
- 4:06their wall? Will they offer sacrifices?
- 4:09Will they finish in a day? Can they
- 4:11bring the stones back to life from those
- 4:13keeps of rubble burned as they are?
- 4:16Tobiiah the Ammonite who was at his side
- 4:20said what they are building, even a fox
- 4:22climbing up on it would break down their
- 4:25wall of stones. And uh I know maybe
- 4:28we're like uh what h how effective could
- 4:32ridicule be? But to be honest, there are
- 4:35millions of people who aren't doing what
- 4:37God's called them to do because the
- 4:39words or the ridicule of other people
- 4:42have really impacted them or really hurt
- 4:44them. And I just want to say, you know,
- 4:46if you're going to build whatever you're
- 4:48going to build a marriage, build a
- 4:50family, build a company, build a build
- 4:52build a life, build a church, build a
- 4:54ministry, if you're going to build
- 4:56stuff, you can't build things and not
- 4:59assume that there's not going to be
- 5:02opposition. you have to actually go
- 5:04ahead and assume there's going to be
- 5:05opposition there. There's the if if I'm
- 5:09building something, I want to take
- 5:10territory. And um it's funny, you know,
- 5:13we we've got a prayer team and we try
- 5:16our best to kind of help people to find
- 5:18their prophetic gifts. And we did a
- 5:21popup at the House of Blues recently,
- 5:23the garden, the church that we're
- 5:24planting. And um afterwards, one of the
- 5:27girls who has a strong prophetic gift on
- 5:28our team, her name is Tatiana. And uh
- 5:31she uh she said, "As we were at the
- 5:33House of Blues, I could feel like there
- 5:35were demonic there were idols. There
- 5:38were there were false gods. There were
- 5:39demonic powers that are not happy that
- 5:42we're here." And she's like, "I felt the
- 5:44presence of the Lord, but I also felt
- 5:46this like spiritual opposition." And I
- 5:49said, "Of course, cuz we're building,
- 5:52and building means that we're taking
- 5:54territory. We're taking ground. Of
- 5:56course, there's going to be opposition.
- 5:57I'm actually not thrown off guard by
- 5:59opposition. You know, there are all
- 6:02kinds of spirits that reside here in
- 6:05this secular venue called the House of
- 6:06Blues. And we are displacing them. We
- 6:10are taking back territory in the in the
- 6:14in the form of souls, but also in the
- 6:16form of like real estate. Like we want
- 6:20this land, like this space to be known
- 6:24not just as a house of blues, the
- 6:26concert venue, but as a house of God.
- 6:28Yeah, of course. We've ticked off, you
- 6:31know, whatever demonic power h is been
- 6:35set up as a prince or principality in in
- 6:38this region is not going to be happy
- 6:40that we're just here. And the enemy will
- 6:43bring ridicule. He'll bring accusation.
- 6:46He'll bring distraction. and he'll do
- 6:48whatever he's got to do to get you to
- 6:50not build what God's called you to
- 6:51build. But I love this. Okay. Uh verse
- 6:54four. Hear us, our God, for we are
- 6:58despised. Turn their insults back on
- 7:00their own heads. Give them over as
- 7:03plunder in a land of captivity. Do not
- 7:05cover up their guilt or blot out their
- 7:07sins from your sight. For they have
- 7:10thrown insults in the face of the
- 7:12builders. Insults are going to get
- 7:14thrown in the face of the builders. But
- 7:16what do we do? We pray. I love this down
- 7:18in verse 9. Chapter 4:9 says, "But we
- 7:22prayed to our God and posted a guard day
- 7:25and night to meet this threat. We didn't
- 7:27just pray, we posted. We prayed and
- 7:30posted cuz faith without works is dead."
- 7:33And so the the question is, okay, have
- 7:36you have you prepared for opposition
- 7:39spiritually? And then have you prepared
- 7:41for opposition practically? Don't just
- 7:44pray. Get a guard. Post a guard up
- 7:46there. Let's go. But don't just post a
- 7:48guard. Pray. And And I have found in a
- 7:51lot of spaces, we're good at doing
- 7:53either or. And not always good at doing
- 7:57both. Hey, God actually wants us to do
- 8:01both of these things. All right.
- 8:03Obviously, don't uh give in to the
- 8:06opposition. And then one of the big
- 8:08nerdy nuggets that I really want to
- 8:09share that this could be a timeless
- 8:11truth as well is that the biggest threat
- 8:14is never gonna be Sand Ballot. You know
- 8:17what I mean? San Ballot who I can't
- 8:19remember where he's from. They give his
- 8:21uh ethnicity at some point. The the the
- 8:25opposition is never going to come from
- 8:27Tobaya the Ammonite. You know what I
- 8:29mean? Like that's not your biggest
- 8:31threat. Your biggest threat is never
- 8:33external. Your biggest threat is always
- 8:35internal. So what's happening in
- 8:37Nehemiah chapter 5? We're going to have
- 8:40uh it says this. Now the men and the
- 8:42wives raised a great outcry against
- 8:44their fellow Jews. Some were saying we
- 8:47and our sons and daughters are out are
- 8:49numerous. In order for us to eat and
- 8:52stay alive, we must get grain. Others
- 8:54are saying we are managing our fields,
- 8:57our vineyards, and our homes to get
- 8:59grain during the famine. Still others
- 9:01were saying, "We have had to borrow
- 9:03money to pay the king's tax on our
- 9:05fields and vineyards." So, there's
- 9:07financial oppression happening in the
- 9:09land. And I love how Nehemiah responds.
- 9:11Nehemiah uh I'll just read it from my
- 9:15laptop. Nehemiah 5 6 to8 says this. I
- 9:19was very angry when I heard their outcry
- 9:21in these words. I took counsel with
- 9:23myself and I brought charges against the
- 9:25nobles and the officials. I said to
- 9:27them, "You are exacting interest each
- 9:30from his brother." And I held a great
- 9:32assembly against them and said to them,
- 9:35"We, as far as we are able, have bought
- 9:38back our Jewish brothers who have been
- 9:41sold to the nations." Like, what in the
- 9:44world, dude? We're trying to end the
- 9:47slavery of our own people, not
- 9:49perpetuate it. But you even sell your
- 9:51brothers that they may be sold to us.
- 9:54They were silent and could not find a
- 9:56word to say. So two big things to pull
- 10:00out of this probably three. So we'll
- 10:02start with the first. The first is the
- 10:04external threat is never as big as the
- 10:06internal threat. And you know the Roman
- 10:09Empire didn't collapse because of the
- 10:11Visigothths or the or you know the Gauls
- 10:14or the anybody who invaded the the the
- 10:17Roman Empire crumbled because of a lack
- 10:19of internal integrity. It's it's it's
- 10:22never the external threat that's the
- 10:24problem. It's the internal threat. And
- 10:27um and and I don't want to be a prophet
- 10:29of doom and gloom, but if I could just
- 10:32give a word of like counsel, it's like
- 10:34the biggest threat to America is never
- 10:36going to be, [snorts] you know, another
- 10:39nation or anything like that. It's it's
- 10:41going to be our lack of unity as a as as
- 10:44a people. You know, it's us. Like we as
- 10:47Americans have to unite. Like we as
- 10:51Americans have to realize no house
- 10:53divided against itself can stand. Like
- 10:56the greatest threat to America is not
- 10:58Russia. The greatest threat to America
- 11:00is not China. The greatest threat to
- 11:02America are Americans. And any team like
- 11:06we don't have to make it that macro.
- 11:08like any team. Sometimes the enemy will
- 11:11make sure that there's so much locker
- 11:13room drama that the issue is not going
- 11:16to be the team that you're facing on the
- 11:17court, but your own teammates in your
- 11:20own locker room. And so we immediately
- 11:22go from, hey, there's, you know, Tobaya
- 11:24and Sam Ballot and all these people are
- 11:27expo, you know, opposing the plan of
- 11:29God, but then Nehemiah is looking at his
- 11:32own people. And what is what had
- 11:34actually happened is that the work on
- 11:35the wall involved so many of Jerusalem's
- 11:38citizens and its surrounding land
- 11:41inhabitants that normal life was being
- 11:42affected. With so many working on the
- 11:45wall, there weren't as many in the
- 11:46fields, in farms, or even in everyday
- 11:49trade and commerce. This had led to a
- 11:52loss of both income and food within the
- 11:54community. This had a devastating effect
- 11:57on the less well-off with families using
- 12:00their land to secure loans and were now
- 12:03threatened with foreclosure and also had
- 12:06Persian taxes they needed to pay. Some
- 12:08of the poorest had even already sold
- 12:11their children into debt slavery. And
- 12:13Nehemiah is completely angry at this.
- 12:16Okay, they had been freed from slavery
- 12:18to Babylon only to be enslaved by their
- 12:21own people. Nehemiah demands that all
- 12:23foreclosures be suspended, that all
- 12:25interest wiped from the loans, and to
- 12:28return what they had already taken from
- 12:31them. They agree to do this under oath.
- 12:33And Nehemiah adds a curse on them just
- 12:36to make sure they do what they say.
- 12:38That's 5 12-13. And then you can just
- 12:42kind of see Nehemiah's integrity as the
- 12:44governor. In a complete contrast to the
- 12:47nobles and other officials, Nehemiah,
- 12:49who had just been appointed governor of
- 12:51Judah, refused to take from the people.
- 12:53He even refused to take the allotment of
- 12:55food and tax he was legally allowed to
- 12:57levy, not taking any that he was due for
- 13:0112 years. This basically meant that
- 13:03during his time as governor, Nehemiah
- 13:05paid all of his staff, all of the
- 13:07guards, and all of the expenses and his
- 13:11own expenses as governor. Okay? Uh so
- 13:14just tons of integrity. What are we
- 13:16talking about? So the number one thing,
- 13:18the internal threat is always bigger
- 13:20than the external threat. Uh I can't
- 13:22stop the fact that Satan hates me and
- 13:25he's going to oppose, you know, our
- 13:27church. But what I can do is make sure
- 13:29that there's there's not an achen in the
- 13:32camp, someone who's secretly, you know,
- 13:35stealing and and causing the favor of
- 13:38God to not rest on us. Okay. uh gossip,
- 13:42discord, division, these are actually
- 13:44the things that are happening right
- 13:46under our noses. And as leaders, we got
- 13:49to be a little bit more scared and
- 13:50vigilant about the internal threats and
- 13:52the external threats. Number two, we
- 13:55continue to see this picture throughout
- 13:57the Bible, okay? That caring for the
- 13:59poor is not some liberal idea. It's a
- 14:02biblical idea. And I know like we're
- 14:05just living in this world right now
- 14:07where personal integrity and morality
- 14:10seems to be like a conservative thing
- 14:13and then like social justice and caring
- 14:15for the poor and protecting the orphan,
- 14:17the widow, and the immigrant seems to be
- 14:18like a leftist thing. And here we go.
- 14:22Here's the Bible again just like jacking
- 14:24with all those categories because Ezra
- 14:26and Nehemiah is supposed to be one book.
- 14:28And Ezra has an issue, a moral issue
- 14:32with the intermarriage of of Jewish
- 14:36people with pagans. Like, hey, nah, you
- 14:38need to be sexually pure. So, this is a
- 14:41sexual ethic, a conservative sexual
- 14:44ethic. Yep. And guess what Nehemiah is
- 14:47going to say? And you need to care for
- 14:48the poor. So, the Bible doesn't have
- 14:50these boxes or these categories. The
- 14:52equation that I've kind of written down
- 14:54is that morality
- 14:56and justice is righteousness. So if you
- 14:59want to be biblically righteous, you got
- 15:02to love the Lord your God with all your
- 15:04heart, all your mind, all your strength,
- 15:05all your soul, and love your neighbor as
- 15:07yourself. that it is both the love of
- 15:10God which would make you sexually pure
- 15:13and the love of your neighbor which
- 15:15would make you you know act towards them
- 15:17w in a financial way that's not that's
- 15:20not taking advantage of them or that's
- 15:22not uh what's the word exploitative in
- 15:25nature and again in our current world
- 15:29these are just in their own different
- 15:30categories but in the biblical world
- 15:33this is just righteousness this is all
- 15:35just righteousness not exploiting your
- 15:37neighbor
- 15:38treating the the the the person who's
- 15:42poor fairly and also having control over
- 15:47your own sexual behaviors is all wrapped
- 15:53in one. These are not two different
- 15:54things. Okay? Uh and it is morality plus
- 15:58justice that equal righteousness. Also,
- 16:01we've got a kayazm. Okay? So, we've got
- 16:04chapter 3:es 1-32. the work on the walls
- 16:07is begun. Okay? And then chapter 6:es 15
- 16:11to 19, the work on the walls is
- 16:12finished. Okay? So that's going to
- 16:13bookend our kayazm. And then if you go
- 16:16one layer in chapter 4:es 1-23, there's
- 16:20plots against the builders. And then in
- 16:21chapter 6:es 1-4, there's plots against
- 16:24Nehemiah. And then if you get into the
- 16:27middle, we've got chapter 5:es 1-9.
- 16:30Nehemiah is a leader full of
- 16:32righteousness and integrity. [snorts]
- 16:34And I think we all want to be the kind
- 16:36of leader who's like Nehemiah. What good
- 16:38is it if we can have the charisma to
- 16:42rally people to build a wall, but then
- 16:44don't have the character to actually
- 16:47like forego our own finances and not
- 16:51exact taxes from people. That's just
- 16:54character. So Nehemiah has the kind of
- 16:57charisma that can get a bunch of people
- 17:00get like rallied around a project, but
- 17:02then just the personal character to make
- 17:05financial sacrifices personally so that
- 17:08the project can go forward. He's not
- 17:10trying to get rich off of the assignment
- 17:12of God on his life. And man, that's
- 17:14commendable. That is insanely insanely
- 17:17commendable. All right, family. The wait
- 17:19is over. My brand new book, Crushing
- 17:22Chaos, is out now and available
- 17:25everywhere books are sold literally
- 17:29today. I walked into a Barnes & Noble
- 17:31and I signed a bunch of copies at a
- 17:34physical location. So, you can grab this
- 17:36book at a physical Barnes & Noble or you
- 17:39can go to a Books a Million or Amazon or
- 17:42anywhere books are sold and grab a copy.
- 17:45If you enjoy reading the Bible from an
- 17:48ancient perspective, if you understand
- 17:50that the beauty of scripture is actually
- 17:53knowing it in context, then you'll love
- 17:55this book. And if there's any chaos in
- 17:58your personal life, I think that reading
- 18:01the Bible from an ancient perspective
- 18:03can actually help to crush [music] the
- 18:04chaos in your life. I think this book is
- 18:07going to be a New York Times bestseller.
- 18:09I really do. I think we wrote a good
- 18:11one. I think you should get a copy
- 18:13today. All right, back to the episode.
- 18:16In the plot against Nehemiah, there's
- 18:18this verse in Nehemiah 6:3. Uh they want
- 18:22him to they're trying to meet him out at
- 18:24a field cuz really they they they want
- 18:26to kill him. Uh so verse two, it
- 18:28actually says Sam Ballad and Gisham sent
- 18:31me this message. Come let us meet
- 18:33together in one of the villages on the
- 18:35plain of Ono. And you know Nehemiah's
- 18:39response is oh no. Get it? On the plains
- 18:42of Ono. And his response is, "Oh no."
- 18:44Any any whatever. You'll get it
- 18:46tomorrow. Uh but they were scheming to
- 18:48harm me. So I sent messages to them uh
- 18:50with the reply, "I am carrying on a
- 18:52great project and cannot go down. Why
- 18:55should the work stop while I leave it to
- 18:57go down to you?" Four times they sent me
- 18:59the same message and each time I gave
- 19:01them the same answer. I love that
- 19:04answer. I'm busy doing what God called
- 19:06me to do. So many times people ask me,
- 19:09"Hey, have you heard about such and
- 19:10such?" Nope. I'm busy doing what God
- 19:12told me to do. Hey, have you heard about
- 19:14No, I'm busy doing what God told me to
- 19:17do. So much drama in life can be just
- 19:20avoided by you just being like, "No, I'm
- 19:23busy doing what God told me to do. I'm
- 19:25about my father's business." Had David
- 19:27just been doing the work that he'd been
- 19:30called to do, which is out being out
- 19:33fighting a military battle, he wouldn't
- 19:35have been tempted by Beth Sheba bathing.
- 19:38So, a lot of it is just why aren't you
- 19:41just doing what you're called to do?
- 19:43Like just focus on what God called you
- 19:46to do and be someone of singular focus.
- 19:50This is what God called me to.
- 19:51Fantastic. And so Nehemiah avoids, you
- 19:55know, a murderous plot just by sticking
- 19:58to the plan. Don't get distracted. No
- 20:00sideways energy. Don't miss the plot.
- 20:03Just do what God told you to do. And you
- 20:05know what? It is the assignment that
- 20:08will actually keep you safe from all
- 20:11kinds of evil plots against you. I bet
- 20:14there's so many things that I don't even
- 20:17manage to get into because I'm just
- 20:20focused just focused on what God called
- 20:22me to do. So that's my last nugget. All
- 20:23right, leads really good into a timeless
- 20:26truth. There's two things that I want to
- 20:28highlight. Number one, actually I only
- 20:30got time to do one, so we'll do one. uh
- 20:32is that the workers, they build and
- 20:35defend simultaneously. And that's a
- 20:38timeless truth for you and I, isn't it?
- 20:40That we're going to have to build and
- 20:42defend simultaneously. Uh we've got to
- 20:44have the the work ethic to build what
- 20:47God wants us to build, but then the
- 20:50courage or the the fight to know when to
- 20:56use a sword in in leadership. Here's
- 20:59what I've realized is that tools, you
- 21:02can fight with a tool and you could try
- 21:05to build with a weapon, but you really
- 21:08want to fight with weapons and build
- 21:09with tools. And what I've seen a lot of
- 21:12times in ministry is uh leaders don't
- 21:15know what requires a hammer and what
- 21:17requires a sword. And so there's some
- 21:19people who it's like, man, you really
- 21:21need to build that guy on your team up.
- 21:23And instead of building that person up,
- 21:25you whip out the sword. you start
- 21:27fighting with someone who you should be
- 21:28building and you need to know the sword
- 21:32is for enemies and the the hammer or the
- 21:36tools are to build and I've seen a lot
- 21:39of passers especially do a lot of damage
- 21:42to a lot of people on their team. Uh
- 21:44because your tongue can either be a tool
- 21:48that you use to build people up or it
- 21:50can be a weapon that you use to cut
- 21:52people down. And wise leaders know when
- 21:56to use a hammer and when to use a sword.
- 21:58And I, as a leader, have had to get
- 22:01better and better and better at using
- 22:03the sword on people who need the sword,
- 22:06but using the hammer on people who need
- 22:08the hammer because my tongue has the
- 22:10power to be both. And I have to be the
- 22:13kind of leader who knows how to defend
- 22:15but also the kind of leader who knows
- 22:17how to build and not to conflate the two
- 22:20or confuse the two because they can
- 22:22easily easily easily easily get confused
- 22:24with each other. And that's not just
- 22:26true in 444 BC with Nehemiah. That's
- 22:29true for you and I today as leaders.
- 22:31Tomorrow we got Nehemiah chapters 89 and
