Full transcript
- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible
- 0:13department.com to download a reading
- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 329.
- 0:27Today we are diving into the entire book
- 0:30of Ruth. That's right. We're going to
- 0:32look at all four chapters of the book of
- 0:35Ruth. And my hope is that you've already
- 0:38read Ruth, chapters 1, 2, 3, and four.
- 0:41We're talking about a pretty small book
- 0:43of the Bible. So, we're going to get it
- 0:45knocked out in just one day on our Bible
- 0:47reading plan. Ruth is packed. And so,
- 0:51we're going to dive right in. Okay. If
- 0:53you haven't done the reading, I'm going
- 0:54to invite you to stop the video, pause
- 0:56the audio, and go get the reading done,
- 1:00okay? It should not take a long time.
- 1:02And my Bible, I mean, we're talking
- 1:04three, four pages max. But what a
- 1:08pivotal, incredible book. And I don't
- 1:11want to steal my thunder for where I'm
- 1:13going today, but Ruth is going to find
- 1:16her name in the genealogy of Jesus. And
- 1:20so, uh, we're going to keep that as the
- 1:23main focus that this book is in here
- 1:27because of the meta narrative of
- 1:29scripture. Scripture is mainly concerned
- 1:32about how Yahweh is going to save
- 1:36humans, humans from sin, from our own
- 1:38foolishness, from ourselves, from Satan,
- 1:41how he's going to save, redeem, and
- 1:43rescue us. And so, redemption is at the
- 1:45heart of this book. And it's easy to get
- 1:48distracted with a bunch of other things
- 1:50that are going on in this book and we'll
- 1:52kind of talk about those. Uh but we are
- 1:54going to keep our north star at this
- 1:57book is about redemption. Okay, let's
- 2:00dive into some context. Okay, the book
- 2:02of Judges. Okay, if if I'm I'm literally
- 2:05opened up to the end of Judges in the
- 2:07beginning of Ruth and the end of the
- 2:11book of Judges says this. In those days,
- 2:13Israel had no king. Everyone did as they
- 2:16saw fit. So the book of Judges is
- 2:19setting us up to need a king. Okay,
- 2:22that's the context that Ruth fits in. A
- 2:25lot of people think that the story of
- 2:27Ruth is probably happening somewhere
- 2:29around Judges chapter 3. And so when
- 2:31Ruth picks up, it says this, in the days
- 2:33when the judges ruled, there was a
- 2:35famine in the land. Okay, so there's a
- 2:38famine in the land and this family is
- 2:41going to go off to the region of Moab.
- 2:43Now, one of the professors that I had in
- 2:46Bible college, his name is Dan Lewis. He
- 2:49kind of showed us how at the beginning
- 2:51of the book, all the names kind of have
- 2:53a meaning. Uh so, uh Bethlehem is house
- 2:57of bread. That's what the word means.
- 2:59Beth is house. Uh
- 3:03okay, house of bread. So, like Bethl is
- 3:06house of God, right? So, Bethlehem,
- 3:09house of bread. Alimc is my God is king.
- 3:13Naomi's name means delight. Melon means
- 3:16sickness and sterility. Killion means
- 3:19consumption. Orpha means back of the
- 3:21neck. Ruth's name means friend. Mara,
- 3:24which is what Naomi is going to change
- 3:26her name to, means bitter. And Boaz
- 3:29means in him is strength. So if you
- 3:32paraphrase the beginning of Ruth and
- 3:34substitute the names for the actual
- 3:37meanings, here's what you get. And this
- 3:39was taught to me by a professor named
- 3:40Dan Lewis. Okay? It says this, "There
- 3:43was no bread in the house of bread. Uh
- 3:47the man whose king was God took his wife
- 3:50Delight and their sons sickness and
- 3:52consumption to Moab." The father and
- 3:56both sons died there, leaving three
- 3:58widows. Delight, back of the neck, and
- 4:02friend. When Delight heard there was now
- 4:05bread in the house of bread, she was
- 4:08determined to return. Her widowed
- 4:10daughters-in-law asked to return with
- 4:12her, but Delight urged them to stay
- 4:15within their own nation. Back of the
- 4:18neck turned back to Moab, but friend
- 4:21swore a solemn oath in Yahweh's name to
- 4:24accompany Delight back to the house of
- 4:27bread. Together, the two of them arrived
- 4:29at the beginning of the barley harvest.
- 4:32Delight was so devastated by her losses
- 4:34in Moab, she changed her name to Bitter.
- 4:38And honestly, that's the context for all
- 4:40the events that are going to unfold.
- 4:42This family in the middle of a famine
- 4:44goes from Bethlehem to Moab. And then
- 4:47calamity falls upon this family. And
- 4:50this family goes from, you know, a
- 4:53husband with two sons whose sons are
- 4:55married to three widows. And of course,
- 5:00this famous line that Ruth says to her
- 5:03mother-in-law, "Your people will be my
- 5:05people. Your God's going to be my God."
- 5:07So, even while I'm in the middle of
- 5:08context clues, I just want to say like
- 5:10God has always had a multithnic vision
- 5:14like for his people. And you can see it
- 5:16in the stories of Rahab and Joshua. You
- 5:19can see it in the story of Ruth here
- 5:20where people who are not Israelites are
- 5:24going to get grafted in to God's
- 5:26covenant. And we'll end this the
- 5:29teaching today kind of on just the
- 5:31gospel of grace. Okay. So, that's the
- 5:33context. Okay. And to kind of wrap up
- 5:35context really succinctly, what we have
- 5:38at the end of Judges is a need for a
- 5:41king. A need for a king. Everyone does
- 5:44what is right in their own eyes. Israel
- 5:46desperately needs a king. What we now
- 5:48have in Ruth is the Lord of Lords,
- 5:52Yahweh, moving chess pieces around on
- 5:54the cosmic board of the universe to get
- 5:57a king. And so, how is Ruth going to
- 6:00end? Okay, Ruth is going to end uh with
- 6:04a total setup for king. Okay, says this.
- 6:08This then is the family line of Perez.
- 6:10Perez was the father of Hezron. Hezron
- 6:12the father of Ram. Ram the father of
- 6:14Aminadab. Aminadab the father of Nishan.
- 6:17Nishan the father of Sam. Sammon the
- 6:19father of Boaz. Okay. Boaz the father of
- 6:23Oed. Oed the father of Jesse. And Jesse
- 6:26the father of David. Okay. So the story
- 6:30that we're looking at right now is the
- 6:32story of David's greatgrandparents.
- 6:36Okay? So this think about this. By the
- 6:39time we get to Saul, who is Israel's
- 6:42choice for a king, not Yahweh's choice
- 6:44for a king, by the time we get to Israel
- 6:47choosing for themselves this wicked
- 6:49king, God had already selected the great
- 6:53grandfather of who he wanted to be king.
- 6:58And and so sometimes it's like we want
- 7:00God to do things and we're so impatient
- 7:03that we realize that or we fail to
- 7:06realize that the God of the universe has
- 7:09already made all of the preparations to
- 7:12give you the thing that you've actually
- 7:15wanted and that you actually need. But
- 7:17in our impatience, we want to rush ahead
- 7:21of the Lord and do things our own way.
- 7:23And so the people end up with Saul who's
- 7:26a wicked king. But God had been working
- 7:29for generations to get David onto the
- 7:32scene. And so had they just been
- 7:34patient, David would have been their
- 7:36first king instead of having to ever
- 7:39experience anything that has to do with
- 7:41Saul. So that is the plot that Judges
- 7:45ends with a need for a king. And by the
- 7:49time we get to the end of Ruth, all
- 7:50preparations have been made for there to
- 7:52be a king. And I want you to know this,
- 7:55okay? that while Ruth and Naomi are in
- 7:59the middle of tragedy, okay, both of
- 8:02their husbands have died, Naomi's sons
- 8:05have died and her husband has died.
- 8:07While they're in the middle of death and
- 8:09tragedy, and they need a miracle, God is
- 8:12not just going to provide them a
- 8:14miracle, but God is going to use their
- 8:17lives to provide a miracle for Israel
- 8:19who needs a king. Because so often we
- 8:22are thinking that it's going to be a
- 8:24win-loss. God either has to bless Israel
- 8:27or he has to bless Ruth and Naomi. But
- 8:30the overarching theme of the book of
- 8:32Ruth is that God never has to choose
- 8:35whether or not he's going to bless Ruth
- 8:36and Naomi or all of Israel. He is going
- 8:39to bless both Ruth and Naomi with a
- 8:42kinsman redeemer named Boaz, but also
- 8:44bless Israel with the king they need
- 8:47named David and bless all of humanity
- 8:50with a kinsman redeemer named Jesus.
- 8:52Because for God, he's not playing. He's
- 8:56not making you or I play musical chairs
- 8:58for blessings. It's not like, well,
- 9:00there's only two blessings and there's
- 9:02three of us. Nope. God can bless Ruth.
- 9:06He can bless Naomi. He can bless Israel.
- 9:08He can bless all of humanity through one
- 9:11story in one family. Okay, so that's all
- 9:14the context we need. Let's dive into
- 9:15some nerdy nuggets cuz I got a lot of
- 9:17them. Family, the wait is over. My brand
- 9:20new book, Crushing Chaos, is out now and
- 9:24available everywhere books [music] are
- 9:26sold literally today. I walked into a
- 9:30Barnes & Noble and I signed a bunch of
- 9:32copies at a physical location. So, you
- 9:34can grab this [music] book at a physical
- 9:37Barnes & Noble or you can go to a Books
- 9:39a Million or Amazon or anywhere books
- 9:42are sold and grab a copy. If you enjoy
- 9:46reading the Bible from an ancient
- 9:48perspective, if you understand that the
- 9:50beauty of scripture is actually knowing
- 9:52it in context, then you'll love this
- 9:55book. And if there's any chaos in your
- 9:57personal life, I think that reading the
- 10:00Bible from an ancient perspective can
- 10:02actually help to crush [music] the chaos
- 10:04in your life. I think this book is going
- 10:06to be a New York Times bestseller. I
- 10:08really do. I think we wrote a good one.
- 10:10I think you should get a copy today. All
- 10:13right, back to the episode. Number one,
- 10:16there's 85 verses in the entire book of
- 10:19Ruth. 23 of those verses
- 10:22directly mention a redeemer. Okay, the
- 10:26word redeemer. So that word redeemer,
- 10:29that's a buzzword for the entire book of
- 10:32Ruth. Now when we talk about redemption
- 10:35in the Christian space, for us many
- 10:38times that's like a concept. It's an
- 10:41idea. But in the Bible, redemption is
- 10:43not a concept. It's actually three
- 10:45stories. There's Abraham going into
- 10:48enemies territory to redeem Lot. Then
- 10:52there is Hosea
- 10:54redeeming his prostitute wife named
- 10:57Goomer. Okay. Paying a price for that
- 11:00which is already his. Okay. So the two
- 11:03images that we have for redemption in
- 11:06the Old Testament are Abraham risking
- 11:09his personal safety to go to war with an
- 11:12enemy to physically redeem that which is
- 11:15his family. Second, a husband who's
- 11:19already paid the price to be married,
- 11:22but then pays again for that which he
- 11:25already owns to to to rescue what is his
- 11:30from the slavery of sin, okay? Or and
- 11:34bondage. And then we have this story of
- 11:36a kinsman redeemer who Boaz is going to
- 11:41rescue Ruth and Naomi from the brink of
- 11:45poverty. but also infertility that their
- 11:49lineage would not continue. So when we
- 11:52think about redemption in the Christian
- 11:54space, that's typically an idea or a
- 11:56concept. But in in the Jewish worldview,
- 11:59it's not a concept, it's a set of
- 12:01stories. Okay? And so this story is all
- 12:05about redemption. And redemption happens
- 12:08by being brought into family. Okay? It's
- 12:11not an individual story. It's a family
- 12:14story. If Ruth and Naomi don't get
- 12:18family, they won't get redemption. Okay?
- 12:22In this culture, widowed women were
- 12:25relegated to a life of poverty. Okay?
- 12:29And not only is Ruth widowed, but she's
- 12:33also an immigrant. Okay? And so life is
- 12:36going to be very, very hard without a
- 12:40man to actually redeem them, to provide
- 12:43family for them. Okay. So, and we'll get
- 12:45to the at the end we'll get into like
- 12:47what does providing family actually
- 12:49mean? Now, let's get to the uncovering
- 12:52feet part because what's going to happen
- 12:54is that Naomi and Ruth are going to
- 12:56devise this plan. Hey, we got to get
- 12:58Boaz to be the kinsman redeemer. So, go
- 13:01down to the threshing floor and, you
- 13:03know, lay at his feet and cover his
- 13:05feet. So, you may not know this, and I'm
- 13:09sorry if this burst your bubble, but
- 13:11feet is a euphemism for genitalia in the
- 13:15Bible. Okay? Now, I know people are
- 13:18going to push back and say, "So, you
- 13:20saying Jesus was washed in the disciples
- 13:22private parts?" No. Okay. The every
- 13:25single time feet is mentioned does not
- 13:27mean that there's private parts, okay,
- 13:31involved. So you have to take context
- 13:34into consideration. So when the woman,
- 13:37you know, cried over Jesus's feet and
- 13:39anointed them with oil and the watch
- 13:41with her hair, what was she doing? Was
- 13:43that sexual? No. Okay. Context. Context
- 13:47is key. Okay. Uh let me give you two
- 13:50examples. Isaiah 7 20. Okay. Isaiah
- 13:557:20. I'm going to pull it up in Logos
- 13:57and we're going to read that one verse
- 13:59in the NIV, but then we're going to read
- 14:01it in the NRSV, which is a more accurate
- 14:03translation of the Bible. It says this
- 14:05in chapter 7:20. This also should prove
- 14:09to you why you should be reading
- 14:11multiple chap like multiple uh
- 14:13translations of the Bible. Okay? Isaiah
- 14:157:20 says this, "In that day, the Lord
- 14:18will use a razor hired from beyond the
- 14:22Euphrates River, the king of Assyria, to
- 14:24shave your head and private parts and
- 14:28cut off your beard also." Okay, so the
- 14:30shaving of the head and private parts
- 14:33and beard. Okay, so all the hair is
- 14:35going to be removed, which is a sign of
- 14:37shame. All right, so what's what's the
- 14:40king of Assyria going to do? shave their
- 14:42heads, their private parts, and cut off
- 14:45their beard also. Now, what the NIV is
- 14:48going to do with Isaiah 7:20 is it's not
- 14:52just going to translate, it's going to
- 14:54interpret because we're going to
- 14:55actually get a more accurate translation
- 14:59that didn't interpret and it's going to
- 15:01be confusing. Okay? NRSV is going to
- 15:05actually translate accurately from the
- 15:07Hebrew, which would probably confuse
- 15:09many of us. says this 7 verse20 on that
- 15:12day the Lord will shave with a razor
- 15:14hired beyond the river with the king of
- 15:16Assyria the head and the hair of the
- 15:19feet and will take off the beard as
- 15:22well. So what the NRSV is saying is it's
- 15:27using a common euphemism for male
- 15:30genitalia feet. Okay, every culture has
- 15:33a euphemism. Okay? You know, when when
- 15:36someone says, "I need to go to the
- 15:38bathroom," it's a euphemism. We're we're
- 15:40not saying, "I need to go urinate or
- 15:42defecate." No, it's I need to go to the
- 15:44bathroom. So, feet is a euphemism for
- 15:49sexual reproductive organs. I'll give
- 15:51you one more example. Okay, this is 1st
- 15:53Samuel 24:3.
- 15:55It says, "This is Saul. He's going to go
- 15:57into a cave to relieve himself, aka, you
- 16:01know, urinate, defecate, whatever it is,
- 16:04probably the second. But anyway, it says
- 16:07he came to the sheepfolds beside the
- 16:10road where there was a cave and Saul
- 16:12went in to relieve himself. All right.
- 16:14Now, again, what the Bible is doing is
- 16:17it's taking the original words and it's
- 16:19not just translating them because if it
- 16:21translated them, then it would actually
- 16:23be went into uncover his feet. But it
- 16:26doesn't say that because most of us
- 16:28would be confused if it did. So it
- 16:30interprets. It doesn't just translate
- 16:32but interprets. Okay? So I need everyone
- 16:36to know this. Your Bible translations
- 16:39are also biblical interpretations.
- 16:43Okay? It's why you should be reading
- 16:44with multiple translations because each
- 16:47of these translations they're trying to
- 16:48their hardest. They don't want to
- 16:50confuse. So sometimes they are
- 16:53sacrificing the accuracy so that you
- 16:56could actually know what's going on.
- 16:58Okay. So it makes sense that in Isaiah
- 17:00chapter 7 verse 20 and the NIV it says
- 17:03private parts because what the heck does
- 17:06shaving feet mean? You'd have to know
- 17:09from cultural and historical context
- 17:11that feet is a euphemism for genitalia
- 17:13to know that they're going to shave
- 17:15their pubic hair. Okay? That you'd have
- 17:17to. And how would you know that unless
- 17:20you I don't know listen to this podcast
- 17:22or have gone to seminary or read Bible
- 17:25dictionaries all day. Like how would you
- 17:27know that? So don't be mad at the Bible
- 17:29translators because they're doing
- 17:31they're trying to interpret for you.
- 17:33Okay. All that to say that doesn't mean
- 17:35that every single time the word foot is
- 17:38used that you know it's a you know it's
- 17:41a sexual innuendo. But when we have
- 17:45uncovering a feet and the fact that Boaz
- 17:48wakes up like, "Whoa, girl, what you
- 17:51doing? What you doing down there?" Okay.
- 17:53And then has her leave before anybody
- 17:56can figure out what's going on cuz he
- 17:59wants to spare her integrity. Okay. And
- 18:03so, you know, she's probably not giving
- 18:04him a pedicure. Okay. Something
- 18:07something sexual in nature is probably
- 18:10happening. Probably happening. We can't
- 18:13say for certainty. Okay. But it's at
- 18:16least possible. Which then gets us to
- 18:18the next question. We should not be
- 18:20using or the next issue I guess. We
- 18:23should not be using biblical characters
- 18:25as moral object lessons. So if you need
- 18:29Ruth to be a virgin until she's married
- 18:33or not engage in fornication in order
- 18:36for you to not engage in fornication,
- 18:39then that's pretty immature. It's like
- 18:42it's like it's like my uh my son
- 18:45literally yesterday we were at a
- 18:47restaurant and his friend who's also
- 18:49four was like swinging on a table and he
- 18:53said, "Dad, is she allowed to do that?"
- 18:55And I said, "If her dad says she can but
- 18:58your dad said you can't, it doesn't
- 19:01matter what she's doing. I I'm not her
- 19:03parent." And so, you know, in his
- 19:06four-year-old brain, he's just like,
- 19:08"No, we should all be able to do the
- 19:09same thing." And it's a mark of
- 19:11immaturity to say, "Well, if Ruth was
- 19:14uncovering feet, I want to be out here
- 19:16uncovering feet." Like, that's just
- 19:17immature. If you need the the characters
- 19:21in the Bible to live up to some moral
- 19:24standard so that you would live up to a
- 19:26moral standard, I would actually say a
- 19:28that's immature, but b you don't get the
- 19:31point of the Bible. Because the point of
- 19:34the book of Ruth is not to teach you how
- 19:36to get married. It's not to teach you
- 19:38how to get your Boaz. It's not to teach
- 19:40you how to date. By the way, there was
- 19:43no dating in this cultural context. So,
- 19:46I don't know what you would even apply
- 19:47to your dating life from this book. It's
- 19:50to show you that God had a plan for the
- 19:53redemption of the world and that Jesus
- 19:57is our kinsman redeemer. That's right.
- 20:00He's a kinsman because he came to earth,
- 20:03but he's a redeemer because he went to
- 20:04the cross. So Boaz is a type in shadow
- 20:08of Jesus. He's a kinsman redeemer. So uh
- 20:12last kind of nerdy nugget for you. Lever
- 20:15marriage is something that's outlined in
- 20:17Deuteronomy 25:es 5-6. It says that if
- 20:22you know a husband or a son has died
- 20:25that the brother or the closest male
- 20:28relative should take the widow and have
- 20:31children for the deceased brother. Okay.
- 20:35So, you can see this in Ruth 4:17. Okay.
- 20:39Ruth and Boaz are going to have a child,
- 20:42but that child is not going to be seen
- 20:44as Ruth and Boaz's child because they're
- 20:46having children for Naomi who's a widow.
- 20:50So, it says this, chapter 4:1 17. We'll
- 20:53start reading at verse 16 just so we
- 20:55have context. Then, no Naomi took the
- 20:57child in her arms and cared for him. The
- 21:00women living there said, "Naomi has a
- 21:02son." Well, really this is like Naomi's
- 21:06grandson, but like who knows like how
- 21:09much blood is even connected. But the
- 21:11point was not for Ruth and Boaz to have
- 21:13children. It was to have children for
- 21:16Naomi. That's what lever marriage is all
- 21:18about. Okay? And they named him Oed. He
- 21:22was the father of Jesse, the father of
- 21:24David. So the whole point of this story
- 21:27is to actually talk about how the
- 21:30grandfather of David was born. That's
- 21:32the point. Not to teach you how to date.
- 21:34Not to teach you how to get your Boaz.
- 21:36Like, that's not what this book of the
- 21:39Bible's about. And so often in our
- 21:41selfishness, we twist the scriptures to
- 21:44want them to be about something that
- 21:46they're just not about. Okay. Couple
- 21:48more nerdy nuggets for you. The social
- 21:50welfare system in this day and age,
- 21:53which could be found in Leviticus 19,
- 21:55Leviticus 23, and Deuteronomy 24, says
- 21:58that the edges of field should not be
- 22:02harvested, but that they should be left
- 22:04there for the poor. And that when the
- 22:06harvesters go one time to get fruit,
- 22:09that they shouldn't pass a second time.
- 22:11Whatever dropped to the ground that you
- 22:13weren't able to get, let poor people
- 22:14come. Okay. So, that is what Ruth and
- 22:17Naomi are out in Boaz's field doing. And
- 22:21he just coincidentally, they
- 22:23coincidentally start gleaning in a field
- 22:26of someone who could be a kinsman
- 22:29redeemer, which then gets me to my next
- 22:31nerdy nugget, which is there's no such
- 22:33thing as coincidence. One of the things
- 22:35that the book of Ruth teaches us is that
- 22:37there's no such thing as coincidence.
- 22:39And then last but not least, the book of
- 22:41Ruth is here to really show us that uh
- 22:45God's always had a multithnic vision.
- 22:48He's always had a multi-ethnic
- 22:50goal for his people. Okay? Even though
- 22:53he has to use one group of people called
- 22:55the people of Israel, he's always had a
- 22:58multiethnic vision, which obviously
- 23:00we're going to get to in the New
- 23:02Testament. All right? So, emphasis on
- 23:05the poor, caring for the poor, the
- 23:06orphan, the widow. There's also an
- 23:08emphasis on loyalty. Ruth is loyal to
- 23:11Naomi. There's an emphasis on the fact
- 23:14that David is going to have Moabitete
- 23:16blood flowing through his veins. And why
- 23:19is this why is this such a heavy
- 23:22emphasis on grace? Well, remember in
- 23:24Numbers chap 22 to 25, there's this
- 23:28whole incident where Balum uh and Bao uh
- 23:32are trying to curse Israel, right?
- 23:34That's that's a Moabitete. That's a
- 23:36Moabitete scheme. And then what happens?
- 23:40God or the Holy Spirit turns Balam's
- 23:42curses into blessings. So plan B was to
- 23:45use Moabitete Medionite women to seduce
- 23:47the men of Israel into worshiping the
- 23:49Bal of Peor. The incident would then
- 23:52lead to a curse on Moab which we read in
- 23:56Deuteronomy 23:es 3-6. a curse that is
- 24:00meant that no descendant of Moab up to
- 24:0210 generations could be part of the
- 24:05assembly of Israel. This basically meant
- 24:08that any descendant of a Moabitete could
- 24:10not take part in the civil and religious
- 24:12ceremonies of Israel. So they could not
- 24:15take therefore any position of
- 24:17leadership. This then is a problem as
- 24:21David is a great grandson of Ruth a
- 24:24Moabitete. so well within the 10
- 24:27generation ban. And so that's why the
- 24:31story is a story of grace. The story has
- 24:34way more to do with God allowing David,
- 24:37who's got Moabiti blood in his veins, to
- 24:39be king, to be leader than it does about
- 24:42you getting your Boaz for Christmas.
- 24:46Okay? So, so again, we have to read
- 24:48scripture in context. All right. My
- 24:51timeless truth for the day is that Jesus
- 24:54is our kinsman redeemer. Like that's the
- 24:57the story that Jesus is God's gift to
- 25:02humanity. He's a kinsman and that he
- 25:04was, you know, unlike the Holy Spirit
- 25:06and unlike God the Father, he took on
- 25:09flesh and blood. He became one of us.
- 25:11He's our kin, but then he's a redeemer
- 25:13because he went to the cross and died
- 25:15for our sins. Boaz is a type and shadow
- 25:18of Jesus Christ. And because of the
- 25:21redemption that we have received, we can
- 25:24be called sons. We could be called
- 25:26daughters. And we could be brought into
- 25:28God's family. The same way that Ruth and
- 25:31Naomi are saved not just from
- 25:33loneliness, but from poverty and
- 25:35isolation that comes from being
- 25:37disconnected from family. Man, we have
- 25:40been grafted into God's family. And so
- 25:42the story of redemption that we see here
- 25:45in the book of Ruth is actually
- 25:48reflective of the story of redemption
- 25:50that we get to live out as believers.
- 25:52And that's what the book of Ruth is all
- 25:54about. Tomorrow we've got the book of
- 25:57Lamentations.
- 25:58We got day 330 here on the podcast. If
