- 0:24FAMILY, WELCOME TO DAY 325. It's our
- 0:27last day in THE BOOK OF JOB. WE'RE
- 0:29LOOKING AT JOB CHAPTERS 40, 41, and 42
- 0:32today. I mean, BARS. GOD'S ABOUT TO SPIT
- 0:38HOT FIRE, OKAY? AND I'M SUPER super
- 0:40excited about it. What amazing chapters
- 0:43of the Bible. I mean, God's going to
- 0:45describe two chaos creatures, behemoth
- 0:47and Leviathan. These this is just this
- 0:50is peak mythological language in the
- 0:54Bible. This image is actually derived
- 0:56from God's Yahweh's description of
- 0:59Leviathan that we are going to find here
- 1:02at the end of the book of Job. Job 41 to
- 1:06be precise. And I've got an
- 1:08interpretation on these chapters that I
- 1:10think is going to be helpful. This is
- 1:13the thematic climax of the book. God is
- 1:17about to instill tons of wisdom. And
- 1:20unlike the end of speech one where Job's
- 1:22response is, "Let me cover my mouth. I
- 1:25got to stop talking." The end of speech
- 1:27two, Job actually recantss his position,
- 1:31repents and acknowledges that what he
- 1:34had said about the Lord was incorrect.
- 1:37Okay? And then Yahweh is going to
- 1:39vindicate him and say that the his
- 1:43friends are wrong. Okay? So, a lot of
- 1:46things are going to happen in these
- 1:48couple of chapters. I'm super super
- 1:50excited about it. And big big idea,
- 1:52okay, 30,000 ft idea is that the book of
- 1:54Job is not designed for us to get to
- 1:56know Job. The book of Job is actually
- 1:59designed for us to get to know Yahweh,
- 2:01to get to know God. And what God is
- 2:03about to do in these very last chapters
- 2:06is reveal himself in a serious way to
- 2:09Job that he wants Job to understand him.
- 2:13And by proxy, we get to understand God
- 2:17uh because God is revealing himself to
- 2:19Job. And so these are just invaluable
- 2:22chapters of the Bible. And who doesn't
- 2:24want, you know, really long description
- 2:26on a fire breathing dragon? Like if
- 2:29anyone doubts whether or not the Bible
- 2:32and Game of Thrones has a lot in common,
- 2:34just read Job chapter 41. Okay? Read
- 2:37read Yahweh's description of Leviathan.
- 2:40And there's a lot of people that would
- 2:42suggest that Behemoth is a hippopotamus
- 2:44and Leviathan is an alligator. That is
- 2:47absolutely ridiculous. There's also a
- 2:49lot of people who would kind of maybe
- 2:51come from a exogetical perspective that
- 2:54this is a description of Yahweh
- 2:56conquering Leviathan and conquering
- 2:58Behemoth. But the text does not say
- 3:00that. Actually, I'm going to give an
- 3:02interpretative or an exogetical
- 3:04interpretation that lines up with Dr.
- 3:07John Walton. He's a hero in the faith to
- 3:10me. I've read almost all of his books. I
- 3:13think that he's one of my favorite
- 3:14scholars. And so, I'm gonna really I'm
- 3:16gonna take Dr. John Walton's position
- 3:18here and I'll kind of outline what that
- 3:21looks like in a little bit. Now, if you
- 3:23haven't done today's reading, shame on
- 3:25you. Not as joking. I'm just joking.
- 3:27Shame off you. Uh but shame on you. Uh
- 3:29now, if you haven't done today's
- 3:31reading, then I want you to stop the
- 3:33video, pause the audio, go read Job
- 3:35chapters 40, 41, and 42. If you've been
- 3:38reading Job this time, this whole way
- 3:40and don't want to read these last few
- 3:42chapters, that's kind of crazy. So, get
- 3:45the reading done. For the rest of us who
- 3:47have done the reading, let's dive in.
- 3:50All right. Now, Behemoth and Leviathan
- 3:53are chaos creatures. Okay, this is
- 3:55deeply mythological language. Okay,
- 3:57which makes most modern people really,
- 3:58really uncomfortable. But if you've been
- 4:00rocking with us on this podcast for any
- 4:02length of time, you know that the Bible
- 4:04was written for us but not to us. Okay?
- 4:08And in the ancient world, mythological
- 4:10creatures are normal. Okay? uh whether
- 4:13it's Mesopotamian or Babylonian or
- 4:15Canaanite, you know, creation content,
- 4:18the creator figure is always having to
- 4:21subdue or conquer chaos creatures,
- 4:24namely Rahab, Leviathan, all types of
- 4:27chaos dragons and chaos monsters um in
- 4:30order to start the creation process.
- 4:31Okay, Genesis is different. Yahweh
- 4:34doesn't have to do any of that. Yahweh
- 4:36doesn't have to tame anything in order
- 4:38to start creating. Okay. Actually,
- 4:41Genesis chapter 1 is going to throw the
- 4:43biggest curveball, the mind blown line
- 4:47which says that God created the great
- 4:49sea creatures. Like God created
- 4:50Leviathan. Didn't have to conquer
- 4:52Leviathan. He creates Leviathan and it's
- 4:56a good part of his creation. Okay, that
- 4:58is the curveball that mixed into this
- 5:01ordered world is a form of chaos. Now,
- 5:05Behemoth is a land animal. Leviathan is
- 5:08a sea animal. Behemoth is going to take
- 5:10up most of Job 40, specifically verses
- 5:1315 to 24. And then Leviathan, we're
- 5:17going to start the description on
- 5:18Leviathan in Job chapter 41. Okay, I'm
- 5:21going to mix in all that's all the
- 5:23context that you need. Okay, now let's
- 5:25dive into some nerdy nuggets. Let's
- 5:26actually get into the text. Job 40:15.
- 5:30Uh it says this, "Family, the wait is
- 5:33over. for my brand new book, Crushing
- 5:35Chaos, is out now and available
- 5:38everywhere books are sold literally
- 5:42today. I walked into a Barnes & Noble
- 5:44and I signed a bunch of copies at a
- 5:47physical location. So, you can grab this
- 5:49book at a physical Barnes & Noble or you
- 5:52can go to a Books a Million or Amazon or
- 5:55anywhere books are sold and grab a copy.
- 5:58If you enjoy reading the Bible from an
- 6:01ancient perspective, if you understand
- 6:04that the beauty of scripture is actually
- 6:06knowing it in context, then you'll love
- 6:09this [music] book. And if there's any
- 6:11chaos in your personal life, I think
- 6:13that reading the Bible from an ancient
- 6:16perspective can actually help to crush
- 6:17the [music] chaos in your life. I think
- 6:19this book is going to be a New York
- 6:21Times bestseller. I really do. I think
- 6:23we wrote a good one. I think you should
- 6:25get a copy today. All right, back to the
- 6:28episode. Job 40:15.
- 6:32Look at behemoth, which I made. Here we
- 6:35go. Key words. Along with you. Along
- 6:39with you. That means he's a land animal.
- 6:42And it means that you and Behemoth were
- 6:44both made on day six of the creation
- 6:47account. Okay? So, if you just take the
- 6:49creation and then you want God to kind
- 6:52of like zoom in on moments, okay? That's
- 6:55what happens all through the Psalms that
- 6:57there are these moments where we know
- 7:00what God did in the seven days of
- 7:01creation, but then God is going to zoom
- 7:03in on a particular moment of the
- 7:05creation and then give tons and tons and
- 7:08tons of details and we get that in in
- 7:11all kinds of places throughout the
- 7:12Bible. Here's one. Okay, look at
- 7:14Behemoth which I made along with you. So
- 7:17there's now a correlation between Job
- 7:20and Behemoth. Okay, God is using
- 7:22behemoth to teach Job about what Job
- 7:26needs to be like. Okay, so let's keep
- 7:28going. Okay, which which and which feeds
- 7:32on grass like an ox. Okay, that means at
- 7:34the beginning of the story, Job is
- 7:36wellfed. What strength it has in its
- 7:38loins. What power in the muscles of its
- 7:41belly. Its tail sways like a cedar. The
- 7:45senus of its thighs are close-knit. Its
- 7:48bones are tubes of bronze. its limbs
- 7:50like rods of iron. It ranks first among
- 7:53the works of God. Yet its maker can
- 7:56approach it with his sword. Okay? So,
- 8:00Job, you you're you're righteous. You're
- 8:02blameless. I'm proud of you. And guess
- 8:05what? I should be able to approach you.
- 8:07Okay? The hills bring it their produce,
- 8:10and all the wild animals play nearby.
- 8:12Okay. What this is essentially a
- 8:15description of Job prior to the Satan
- 8:18figure being able to take Job's wealth
- 8:22under the lotus plant. It lies hidden
- 8:24among the reeds in the marsh. The
- 8:26lotuses conceal it in their shadows. The
- 8:29poppplers by the streams surround it. A
- 8:31raging river does not alarm it. This is
- 8:34what Yahweh is saying to Job. You have
- 8:36now received or encountered a raging
- 8:40river that threatens to drown you. But
- 8:42you shouldn't be alarmed. Joe, be like
- 8:46behemoth. Be strong. Okay. The raging
- 8:48river does not alarm it. It is secure.
- 8:50Though the Jordan should surge against
- 8:53its mouth, can anyone capture it by the
- 8:56eyes or trap it and pierce its nose? The
- 9:00word nose in the ancient world is
- 9:02synonymous with anger. Okay? Can anyone
- 9:04make it angry? Can anyone and piercing
- 9:08the nose is a symbol of like slavery.
- 9:11Okay? And it's saying these friends of
- 9:13yours shouldn't be able to get you this
- 9:16hottempered. I need you to be like
- 9:17behemoth. Now here's the next chapter 41
- 9:20is going to start. Can you pull in
- 9:22Leviathan with a fish hook or tie down
- 9:25its tongue with a rope? Can you put a
- 9:28cord through its nose or pierce its jaw
- 9:31with a hook? Okay. So, and then it we're
- 9:34going to talk you, you you you
- 9:38can you make a pet of it like a bird is
- 9:41verse 5. Verse 7, can you fill its hide
- 9:44with harpoons? If you lay a hand on it,
- 9:48you will remember the struggle and never
- 9:49do it again. Nine, any hope of subduing
- 9:53it is false. The mere sight of it is
- 9:55overpowering. No one is fierce enough to
- 9:57rouse it. Who then is able to stand
- 10:00against me? Me. Verse 10, we get a
- 10:04curveball. Everything has been you. You,
- 10:07you, you, you. From Job 41:es 1 all the
- 10:10way to verse 8, everything is you, you,
- 10:14you, you, you. Look at all the look at
- 10:16all the pronouns, okay? From verse one
- 10:18all the way to verse 8. Can you? Can
- 10:19you? Can you? Will you? Okay, can you?
- 10:22And then all of a sudden in verse 10 and
- 10:2411, things shift. No one is fierce
- 10:28enough to rouse Leviathan. Who then is
- 10:30able to stand against me? Yahweh. Verse
- 10:3411. Who has a claim against me that I
- 10:38must pay? Everything under heaven
- 10:40belongs to me. So what is happening in
- 10:43the text? Yahweh is saying Job is
- 10:47behemoth and he is Leviathan. Yahweh is
- 10:51comparing himself to Leviathan. We have
- 10:55to conclude that because everything from
- 10:58verse 1 to verse 8 of chapter 41 is you
- 11:01you you you. And then verse 10, no one
- 11:04is fierce enough to rouse Leviathan. Who
- 11:06then is able to stand against me? God is
- 11:09saying to Job is if you can't even
- 11:11contend with Leviathan. The strongest
- 11:13thing I've made, you definitely can't
- 11:15contend with me. So here is the point.
- 11:18Leviathan cannot be tamed. Leviathan
- 11:20cannot be domesticated. Leviathan cannot
- 11:22be controlled. Leviathan cannot be
- 11:24controlled, subdued, harnessed, wounded,
- 11:27cannot be forced. His mouth cannot be
- 11:30forced open. Leviathan is wild.
- 11:33Leviathan cannot be tamed, domesticated,
- 11:36controlled, subdued, wounded, or
- 11:38harnessed in any way. And guess what the
- 11:41truth of the Bible is describing? It's
- 11:44saying Yahweh in the same way cannot be
- 11:47tamed. Yahweh cannot be tamed. Yahweh
- 11:49cannot be domesticated. Yahweh cannot be
- 11:50controlled. Yahweh cannot be subdued.
- 11:52Yahweh cannot be wounded. Yahweh cannot
- 11:54be harnessed. Yahweh's mouth cannot be
- 11:56forced open. Yahweh is wild. This is
- 12:02what Yahweh wants Job to understand. You
- 12:05cannot act righteous and think that your
- 12:09righteousness then manipulates me into
- 12:12blessing you. I will not be manipulated.
- 12:14I will not be controlled. I will not be
- 12:17there's no formula to figure me out. I
- 12:21will not be tamed. I am God. In the same
- 12:26way that you cannot even tame Leviathan,
- 12:29who I am astronomically stronger than,
- 12:32astronomically
- 12:35more wild than if you can't even tame
- 12:38Leviathan, which is a created being, how
- 12:41dare you think you can contra contain or
- 12:44control me? God is using Leviathan as an
- 12:48image to describe himself
- 12:51and we get that from verses 10- 11.
- 12:56Okay. So this description of Leviathan
- 12:59is not really a description of
- 13:01Leviathan. It's a description of Yahweh.
- 13:05And that is what John Walton has
- 13:07discovered that no one else that I've
- 13:10read is it comes close to even talking
- 13:12about this passage in Job chapter 41 is
- 13:16not a passage about how God tames
- 13:20Leviathan or or uh subdues Leviathan.
- 13:23Nope. It's a passage about how Yahweh is
- 13:26a lot like Leviathan. Now he's also
- 13:30wholly other than Leviathan. He's not
- 13:32like Leviathan in more ways than he's
- 13:34like Leviathan. But what God is saying
- 13:36is if you can't even subdue,
- 13:39domesticate, or tame Leviathan, how dare
- 13:42you think you can tame, subdue, or uh
- 13:45tame, subdue, or control, or domesticate
- 13:48me. All the things that Job cannot do to
- 13:51Leviathan, Job also cannot do any of
- 13:54these things to Yahweh. This is the
- 13:58point. And once Job hears all of this,
- 14:02he recantss and submits and acknowledges
- 14:06that he had been presumptuous. He
- 14:09thought that his righteousness could in
- 14:12some way control or predict outcomes for
- 14:16what Yahweh would do for him and to him.
- 14:19Which means he was not being righteous
- 14:21for righteous sake. He was being
- 14:24righteous as a means to an end. And if
- 14:27we're all honest, we're all the same.
- 14:30Which means the message for Job is also
- 14:32a message message for you and I. God
- 14:35cannot be manipulated. God cannot be
- 14:39tamed. God cannot be controlled. I I
- 14:42want you to think about this because for
- 14:43a lot of us, the point of understanding
- 14:46someone or understanding something is so
- 14:49that you can manipulate it, right? A
- 14:50mechanic can manipulate a car. So
- 14:53mechanics understand cars so that they
- 14:55can take them apart, put them back
- 14:56together and and the engineers
- 14:59manipulate things. That that's what they
- 15:00do, right? The point of the Bible is to
- 15:04actually get you to a place where you
- 15:05realize God cannot in any way be
- 15:09controlled at all. And that thing in you
- 15:12that wants to control others or control
- 15:17God or to control your life, that's the
- 15:20thing that needs to die because he's
- 15:22Leviathan. He's untameable. He's wild.
- 15:24He's uncontrollable. He's uncontainable.
- 15:26And you cannot use your good deeds in in
- 15:30order to try to predict how he is going
- 15:34to bless you in in the universe. That is
- 15:39a recipe for being disappointed by God.
- 15:42If you think, "Yep, if I pull this
- 15:43lever, if I do this, I can get this."
- 15:46Yep. Nope. Wrong. So, what's our Thomas
- 15:49Truth for the day? I'll tell you our
- 15:50Thomas truth. Uh, it's actually I'm
- 15:52going to quote uh of two passages from
- 15:55the line of the witch in the wardrobe.
- 15:57This is CS Lewis. And I don't know what
- 15:59CS Lewis's stance is on Job chapter 41.
- 16:02If he thought that Yahweh was describing
- 16:04himself through this mythological
- 16:07feature uh creature that we know as
- 16:08Leviathan, I have no idea. But man, does
- 16:11CS Lewis nail it in the lion, the witch
- 16:14in the wardrobe. I'll read two quotes.
- 16:16Here's the first. This is uh CS Lewis
- 16:19describing Alan, the lion, the god
- 16:22figure in the lion, the witch in the
- 16:24wardrobe. It says, "He'll be coming and
- 16:25going. One day you'll see him and
- 16:28another you won't. He doesn't like being
- 16:31tied down. And of course, he has other
- 16:35countries to attend to. It's quite all
- 16:37right. He'll often drop in. Only you
- 16:40mustn't press him. He's wild, you know.
- 16:43Not like a tame lion. You mustn't press
- 16:49him. He's wild, you know. Not like a
- 16:53tame lion. If there was a t-shirt for
- 16:56the book of Job, I think the t-shirt
- 16:58should just have Leviathan on it and it
- 17:00say, "You must impress him. You must
- 17:03impress him. He's wild." You know, he's
- 17:06not a tame lion. He's not a tamed
- 17:10Leviathan. He's wild. There's this other
- 17:13quote uh from Lion Witch in the
- 17:15Wardrobe. Mr. Beaver famously tells the
- 17:17children, "Safe?"
- 17:20It's like the kids are asking, "Is Alan
- 17:22safe?" safe. Question mark. Who said
- 17:25anything about safe? Of course he isn't
- 17:29safe, but he's good. He's the king. I
- 17:32tell you, most of us want a safe god. We
- 17:35want a tamed god. We want a god that we
- 17:37can control, which means we really want
- 17:39a genie. We really just want like a
- 17:41magician to like do magic tricks for us.
- 17:43If it's a magician or a genie, guess
- 17:45what? You're still in control. Aladdin
- 17:48is in control of the genie. That's the
- 17:51whole point. And now we really want a
- 17:54genie. We want to be in control to free
- 17:57the genie if we want to. We want to be
- 17:59Aladdin. And the book of Job is a
- 18:03reminder God's wild. God's not tamed.
- 18:06Your righteousness doesn't get God to do
- 18:09anything. Now that I'm a lead pastor for
- 18:11the first time in my life, I now am
- 18:13realizing there are people not at our
- 18:16church. I prayed that they are not in
- 18:18our church. eventually they will be who
- 18:20think that the more they tithe the more
- 18:23it will give them influence at church
- 18:25like if they tithe a lot if they give a
- 18:29lot they could determine like what I
- 18:30preach or like they they could have a
- 18:32say in like what I do and there's a part
- 18:35of me that wants to be like [laughter]
- 18:37you will not tame me you will not
- 18:39domesticate me I am wild and guess what
- 18:43you want me to stay that way because the
- 18:46moment you try to tame me or domesticate
- 18:48me if I was tame or domesticated, I
- 18:50wouldn't be able to move to a city I've
- 18:53never lived in and live amongst
- 18:55strangers and just start a church. That
- 18:57that's something that pioneers do. And
- 19:01if you try to tame me, you'll actually
- 19:04be denying the very thing that is able
- 19:09to get a church up off the ground. Like
- 19:12in a lot of us, that's what we do with
- 19:14God. We think if I tithe or if I give or
- 19:17if I serve or if I this or if I that,
- 19:20it'll be a hedge of protection around
- 19:21me. And then you need a book like Job to
- 19:25come around and say, "No, no, no, no.
- 19:28The universe is a wild place. The world
- 19:30is a wild place. Life is wild. God is
- 19:34wild." And if you're in this because you
- 19:38want safe, predictable, like
- 19:42domesticated like like faith, this ain't
- 19:45the place. I'm sorry. And so, let's deal
- 19:48with the epilogue. Couple things about
- 19:50the epilogue. Elahoo is not reprimanded
- 19:53in the epilogue. Job repents, but his
- 19:55friends do not. And that is actually why
- 19:59Yahweh is going to say in verse 7, after
- 20:03the Lord had said these things to Job,
- 20:05he said to Elephaz, who I think is a
- 20:07representative of all the friends, I am
- 20:10angry with you and your two friends
- 20:12because you have not spoken the truth
- 20:15about me as my servant Job has. Now,
- 20:17let's think about this. Job has said
- 20:19untrue things about Yahweh in the full
- 20:23context of the book. But what has Job
- 20:24done? Job comes to a place in chapter
- 20:2742:1 where he says this. Then Job
- 20:30replied to the Lord, I know that you can
- 20:32do all things. No purpose of yours can
- 20:34be thwarted. You asked, "Who is this
- 20:37that obscures my plans without
- 20:38knowledge? Surely I spoke of things I
- 20:40did not understand, things too wonderful
- 20:42for me to know." You said, "Listen now,
- 20:44and I will speak. I will question you,
- 20:45and you shall answer me." My ears had
- 20:48heard of you, but now my eyes have seen
- 20:50you. Therefore, I despise myself and
- 20:53repent in dust and ashes. At the end of
- 20:56the first speech, Job does not repent.
- 20:58But at the end of the second speech, Job
- 21:00repents because now what has happened?
- 21:03My ears had heard of you, but now my
- 21:06eyes have seen you. He now knows
- 21:09something about God that he did not know
- 21:11before. He thought that God could be
- 21:14tamed by his good actions. And now he
- 21:17knows my righteousness is as filthy rags
- 21:21before the Lord. My righteousness gets
- 21:23me nothing. And now why does God restore
- 21:26everything to Job? Because Job comes to
- 21:29the realization that God is not obliged
- 21:31to do anything. But that blessing from
- 21:35the Lord is just that, a gift. It's not
- 21:39a reward for righteousness, but it's a
- 21:42gift. And it's unpredictable and it's
- 21:45wild. And when you begin to realize
- 21:47everything's a gift and I hold
- 21:49everything lightly and it could be gone
- 21:51tomorrow and I deserve death, hell, and
- 21:56the grave. But somehow in God's
- 21:58untameable, unpredictable
- 22:01wisdom, he decided to gift me with
- 22:05blessings. He decided to gift me. It's
- 22:07not anything I worked to achieve, but it
- 22:10is something that I will gladly receive.
- 22:13And now that Job has been transformed,
- 22:16now God restores everything. And the
- 22:20restoration is not as if the pain of
- 22:24losing his children is not real. But the
- 22:27pain of the suffering was there to
- 22:30transform Job into the kind of person
- 22:32that no longer thinks that he's entitled
- 22:36to the things that he's worked for
- 22:38because of his righteousness. But now he
- 22:41can actually just receive blessing from
- 22:43God as a gift that is completely
- 22:46unpredictable, wild, and untameable. And
- 22:49when you get there, when you get to the
- 22:52point of life's untameable, God's wild,
- 22:55he's not able to be domesticated, you
- 22:58will know something about God that you
- 23:00didn't know before. And that is what the
- 23:03book of Job is actually all about. I
- 23:07hope that you encounter the wild
- 23:10untameable power of God. that you would
- 23:13not through your prayers or through your
- 23:17actions try to manipulate God in any
- 23:21way, shape, or form, but that you would
- 23:23actually have a relationship with the
- 23:26God of the universe. Not a genie that
- 23:29does your bidding, but God. And if God
- 23:33sees fit to take everything away, then
- 23:36guess what? I trust his wisdom. And if
- 23:38God sees fit to open up the storehouses
- 23:40of the heavens and bless me in ways that
- 23:42I can't, I have room enough to receive,
- 23:45I'll receive it. And that I think is the
- 23:48entire book of Job. AND THAT [screaming]
- 23:51that gets me fired up. I don't want some
- 23:53neutered God. I want a God that actually
- 23:56has real power. And I think that if we
- 23:58can fall in love with the real God of
- 24:00the Bible and not the God of our
- 24:01imaginations, we could actually know
- 24:03him. And to know him is to love him.
- 24:06That's our timeless truth FOR THE DAY.
