- 0:24Welcome to day 322 here on the Bible
- 0:27department podcast. I'm super excited to
- 0:30jump into Job chapter 32 and 33 today.
- 0:35Today we've got a brand new character
- 0:37who's just literally appearing out of
- 0:40nowhere. His name is Elhoo. Elahoo. And
- 0:44we don't really know much about Elohoo.
- 0:45We know he's young. We know that he's
- 0:47been patiently waiting to kind of add
- 0:50his two cents to the conversation that's
- 0:53been happening between Job and his
- 0:55friends. And today we're just going to
- 0:57dive into the first part of his speech
- 1:01to Job and the friends or really the
- 1:04first speech that he's going to give.
- 1:06That's what we got on the docket today
- 1:08for Job chapter 32 and 33. Hey, if you
- 1:11haven't read these two pretty short
- 1:14chapters out of the book of Job, how
- 1:16about you stop this video, pause the
- 1:18audio, go get the reading done for the
- 1:21day. I promise you watching this episode
- 1:23is going to have so much more value if
- 1:26you actually come into the episode
- 1:30having done the reading for the day. So
- 1:32I want to just say that today and
- 1:34tomorrow we'll be looking at Elahoo's
- 1:37speech. So we'll be kind of be wrapping
- 1:39our minds around this one character for
- 1:42two days in a row. Okay, today we're
- 1:44looking at Job chapter 32-33. So for
- 1:47anyone who needs context, we'll just
- 1:49kind of map out how this section of
- 1:52monologues works. We've got Job's
- 1:55monologue, which we looked at yesterday,
- 1:57which is Job chapter 29 and 31. And then
- 1:59chapters 32 to 37 is a monologue by a
- 2:03man named Elihoo. And then after that,
- 2:06we're going to get a monologue from
- 2:08Yahweh. So let's just zoom in to Elhoo's
- 2:12monologue because he's going to actually
- 2:14give three separate speeches. Okay. He's
- 2:17going to give an introduction, a speech,
- 2:19another speech, another speech, then a
- 2:22conclusion. So, I would [snorts] say Job
- 2:24chapter 32 feels like an introduction.
- 2:27All right. He starts off in verse 6. I'm
- 2:30young in years and you're old. That is
- 2:32why I was fearful, not daring to tell
- 2:34you what I know. I thought age should
- 2:37speak. Advanced years should teach
- 2:38wisdom. But it is the spirit in a
- 2:41person, the breath of the Almighty that
- 2:43gives them understanding. I agree with
- 2:45that. I there there there are a handful
- 2:48of people where I'm like, man, I know
- 2:49I'm only 38 and I know you may be 60,
- 2:53but I know that I have the wisdom to to
- 2:55pastor you. I I know that I know that
- 2:57the Lord has spoken to me. So, I'm I'm
- 2:59with Elohoo, man. I I can rock with
- 3:01Eloo. It says to the friends, okay? And
- 3:04really, I I would say his speech, in my
- 3:07opinion, doesn't really start until
- 3:09chapter 33. Okay? Because he's
- 3:11responding to the friends for a while.
- 3:14He says, "I too will tell you what I
- 3:16know. I waited while you spoke. I
- 3:18listened to your reasoning while you
- 3:20were searching for words. I gave you my
- 3:22full attention. But not one of you has
- 3:25proved Job wrong. None of you has
- 3:28answered his arguments." That's verse
- 3:3012. Okay.
- 3:31>> Uh verse 13. Do not say we have found
- 3:33wisdom. Let God, not a man, refute him.
- 3:36But Job has not marshaled his words
- 3:40against me, and I will not answer him
- 3:41with your arguments. They are dismayed
- 3:44and have no more to say. Words have
- 3:46failed them. So Ellie, who's essentially
- 3:50basic claim to the three friends is
- 3:52like, just because you're old doesn't
- 3:53mean you're wise. Like just cuz you're
- 3:55old doesn't mean you know what you're
- 3:56talking about. You're you're older than
- 3:58me, but I'm a young buck. I got
- 4:01something to say. Okay. So Job chapter
- 4:0332 is an introduction slashresponse to
- 4:08these friends, Job's friends, Job's old
- 4:10friends. And then once we get into
- 4:12chapter 33, we get full-blown, you know,
- 4:15we're we're responding to Job. Ellie who
- 4:17is responding to Job. And I would say I
- 4:20would still say chapter 32 and 33 are
- 4:22speech one. It's just that some of
- 4:24speech one is directed to the friends
- 4:26and some of speech one is directed to
- 4:27Job. And that po portion where it's
- 4:30directed to the friends kind of feels
- 4:32like a little bit of an introduction,
- 4:34but speech one nonetheless. Job chapter
- 4:3734, which we'll start looking at
- 4:38tomorrow, is speech number two. Okay,
- 4:41this is Elhus's second speech. And then
- 4:44Job chapter 35, this is Elhoo's third
- 4:47speech. So he's going to give three
- 4:48speeches total. And then Job chapter 36
- 4:51and 37 is Ellie who's conclusion. All
- 4:54right, so that's just context. Okay, we
- 4:57don't know who Elihoo is. He is a brand
- 4:59new character. He appears out of
- 5:01nowhere. He gives multiple speeches
- 5:04obviously, then disappears and nobody
- 5:08responds to him. Job didn't respond to
- 5:10him. The Job's friends don't respond to
- 5:13him. Ellie who is young and has been
- 5:15there all along. He's listened to
- 5:18everything that all the friends have had
- 5:20to say. So odd. I like this. The whole
- 5:24him as a character is just odd. Now what
- 5:27he has to say is fascinating. And we're
- 5:30going to dive into that now as we
- 5:31transition into our nerdy nuggets for
- 5:34the day. All right. Essentially,
- 5:36Elihoo's main argument to Job is like,
- 5:39you're claiming that God's not talking,
- 5:42but God's definitely talking. You're
- 5:44claiming that like you want God to
- 5:46answer you or to respond, but he's
- 5:48responded. Okay, it says this in verse
- 5:5014, Job chapter 33. And again, if you
- 5:54take these verses out of context, there
- 5:57are so
- 6:00he's just freaking wrong. But like this
- 6:02is such an odd place where like most of
- 6:05the time verses taken out of context are
- 6:08like terrible, right? That makes no
- 6:10sense out of context. It only makes
- 6:12sense in context. These passages from
- 6:16Elhoo, but also Elephaz, Bildad, and
- 6:18Zofar are all like out of context. These
- 6:22sound amazing. Like this makes so much
- 6:24sense. if if I didn't know that context
- 6:28proves that you guys are freaking idiots
- 6:30and you're wrong. Okay, so uh let's
- 6:33let's look at chapter 33:14
- 6:36together. It says this. Job 33:14. Let's
- 6:39look at it together. For God does speak
- 6:42now one way, now another. Okay. Hey Job,
- 6:46I know you're saying God's not talking
- 6:47to you, but God does speak. Okay, now
- 6:51one way, now another, though no one
- 6:53perceives it. says, "Hey, you've got a
- 6:56perception problem. We got a hearing
- 6:58problem, not a talking problem. God's
- 7:01talking. God's speaking. You don't
- 7:03perceive it." And that's the actual
- 7:05issue. Uh, and then it says, "He may
- 7:07speak in the ears and terrify them with
- 7:09warnings to turn them from wrongdoing,
- 7:11to keep them from pride, to prevent them
- 7:14from the pit, their lives from perishing
- 7:18by the sword. Or someone may be chasened
- 7:21on a bed of pain with constant distress
- 7:24in their bones so that their body finds
- 7:28food repulsive in their soul loathes the
- 7:31choices meal. Their flesh waste away to
- 7:34nothing and their bones once hidden now
- 7:36stick out. They draw near to the pit and
- 7:40their life to the messengers of death.
- 7:44Yet if there is an angel at their side,
- 7:47a messenger, one out of a thousand, send
- 7:50to them. Send to them how to be upright.
- 7:54Okay. So what is Elihoo saying? He's
- 7:57saying God does speak. He just doesn't
- 7:59speak the way that you want him to
- 8:00speak. God speaks through dreams in
- 8:03visions of the night. When deep sleep
- 8:05falls on people as they slumber on their
- 8:07beds, he may speak in their ears and
- 8:10terrify them with warnings. So God
- 8:13speaks in ways that are not comfortable.
- 8:15And not only does God speaks in, you
- 8:18know, bad dreams and nightmares. Not
- 8:21only does God speak in a way that
- 8:22terrifies people while they're in the
- 8:24middle of the night, while they're
- 8:25sleeping, but he also chasen people. He
- 8:30also disciplines people. He also sends
- 8:33suffering. And in the middle of
- 8:35suffering, guess what happens? We begin
- 8:37to hear God's voice. And when you think
- 8:40about it, ELAHOO AIN'T WRONG. MY brother
- 8:43is not wrong. Okay, this is the tension
- 8:46with the book of Job period, but it's
- 8:48also the tension of uh of just the
- 8:52friends or characters. I don't know if
- 8:54Ellieoo would be considered a friend,
- 8:57but he's a character that is responding
- 9:00to Job. Okay. Ellie who then seems to be
- 9:03arguing that God is speaking, but Job
- 9:05isn't listening. Job has had nightmares.
- 9:07We know this in Job chapter 7:14. Job
- 9:11has been sick. These were both God
- 9:14speaking, but Job wasn't listening. The
- 9:16nightmares and the boils, the sickness.
- 9:18This was God speaking according to Eloo.
- 9:21Sometimes God speaks through an angel or
- 9:23messenger. So God speaks, Sometimes God
- 9:26speaks through other people. Elhoo is
- 9:28saying that God is speaking to Job
- 9:30through what is happening to him. But
- 9:32Job isn't listening. Job must observe
- 9:35his life and learn what God is saying so
- 9:39that God can redeem him. Man, that's
- 9:43fascinating. Now, here's the tension.
- 9:46Generally speaking, what Elohoo is
- 9:48saying is pretty spot-on. I would add a
- 9:51caveat, though. There's a caveat. I
- 9:53think that God can redeem suffering, but
- 9:56I don't think God causes suffering to
- 9:58happen just so that he can get people's
- 10:00attention. So, I've heard this in church
- 10:03a lot. Like, man, God sent me a wakeup
- 10:06call. Man, my mama got cancer. That was
- 10:08God sending me a wakeup call. I don't
- 10:10know if that was God sending you a
- 10:12wakeup call. I think life sucks. The
- 10:14enemy attacks people with cancer. I
- 10:16think your your mom your mom got cancer.
- 10:18Okay? God used that to serve as a wakeup
- 10:24call. Okay? And as long as we've got
- 10:26that nuance, I'm cool. But the moment we
- 10:29start getting down the road of like God
- 10:32did this on purpose, he actively did
- 10:37this so that I could get a wakeup call.
- 10:41That is that's hard. That's going to be
- 10:44a tough pill for for me to swallow. I
- 10:46know there's other people maybe that's
- 10:48fine with you, but man, that says a lot
- 10:51about God. Like at least it does to me.
- 10:54And I know everybody's not going to
- 10:56agree. And my goal on this podcast is
- 10:58not to just get a bunch of people to
- 11:00agree with me. I actually would love
- 11:02nothing more than for people to disagree
- 11:04with me because that means we're
- 11:05wrestling with ideas, which is the
- 11:06point. Um, so man, God sent me a wakeup
- 11:10call. My mom got got cancer. I I think
- 11:13that God can speak through hard things,
- 11:16but I don't think it's like God is
- 11:18sending the hard thing on purpose to get
- 11:21people's attention. But that's Eloo's
- 11:23stance. He's saying, "Look, he may speak
- 11:26in their ears and terrify them with
- 11:28warnings to turn them from wrongdoing,
- 11:30to keep them from pride, to preserve
- 11:33them from the pit, their lives from
- 11:35perishing by the sword." So Ellie who is
- 11:38claiming that even if night terrors or
- 11:43you know physical suffering and pain
- 11:45results in that person not going down to
- 11:49the pit to sh like dying and and losing
- 11:54out on the the pleasure and the
- 11:57privileges of afterlife. God essentially
- 11:59goes yes it's worth it. it's worth it to
- 12:01send some pain now so that this person
- 12:04doesn't have to experience eternal
- 12:06separation from me. And I think
- 12:09theologically that is that's going to be
- 12:12a hard position for me to like to take.
- 12:16But I do I do get that it's a position
- 12:19and I'm not even saying that people who
- 12:21hold that position are wrong. But I am
- 12:23saying it's not the position that I
- 12:25would hold. Okay. So that's that. All
- 12:27right. Now, let's kind of ease into our
- 12:30timeless truth for the day, family. The
- 12:32wait is over. My brand new book,
- 12:34Crushing [music] Chaos, is out now and
- 12:38available everywhere books are sold
- 12:40literally today. I walked into a Barnes
- 12:43& Noble and I signed a bunch of copies
- 12:46at a physical location. So, you can grab
- 12:49this book [music]
- 12:50at a physical Barnes & Noble or you can
- 12:52go to a Books a Million or Amazon or
- 12:55anywhere books are sold and grab a copy.
- 12:58If you enjoy reading the Bible from an
- 13:01ancient perspective, if you understand
- 13:03that the beauty of scripture is actually
- 13:05knowing it in context, then you'll love
- 13:08this book. And if there's any chaos in
- 13:11your personal life, I [music] think that
- 13:13reading the Bible from an ancient
- 13:15perspective can actually help to crush
- 13:17the chaos in your life. I think this
- 13:19book is going to be a New York Times
- 13:21bestseller. I really do. I think we
- 13:23wrote a good one. I think you should get
- 13:25a copy today. All right, back to the
- 13:28episode. In a real way, in a very, very,
- 13:31very real way, Ellie is saying something
- 13:34that's very true. And uh I'm gonna quote
- 13:37CS Lewis because Ellie who's not that
- 13:40far off from saying the same thing that
- 13:42like CS Lewis like said, okay, uh in the
- 13:46Problem of Pain, incredible writing, by
- 13:49the way. Like if you haven't read The
- 13:51Problem of Pain, you should you should
- 13:52read it. It says this uh this is just a
- 13:54quote taken straight out of the Prom of
- 13:56Pain. It says, "God whispers in our
- 13:59pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but
- 14:02shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone
- 14:05to rouse a deaf world. Again, the
- 14:08problem of pain. And I agree with CS
- 14:10Lewis that a lot of times pain and
- 14:12suffering can become a wake-up call. But
- 14:16I would still just be at, hey, we're at
- 14:19God has allowed said pain and suffering
- 14:22to happen, not God has authored this
- 14:26pain and suffering to happen. And uh I'm
- 14:29cool with God allowing it to happen and
- 14:30then using it and not letting anything
- 14:33be a waste, but making sure that if
- 14:37there's going to be pain or suffering
- 14:38that he is helping to redeem it and and
- 14:44get the most good out of it as humanly
- 14:46possible. I'm completely comfortable
- 14:48with that. So now here's the the the big
- 14:53thing and this is what Ellie who speech
- 14:55is really setting us up for. Okay?
- 14:57Whether Yahweh has or hasn't spoken to
- 14:59Job through his, you know, nightmares or
- 15:02through his physical suffering, we don't
- 15:04know. We have no idea. But what we do
- 15:07know is that God is about to speak in a
- 15:11couple of chapters. And man, Job could
- 15:14have heard what Yahweh has to say with
- 15:18or without all of the physical and
- 15:21emotional and financial pain that Job
- 15:24has gone through. So whether Yahweh has
- 15:28or hasn't spoken to Job, we don't know.
- 15:30What we know though as a fact is that
- 15:34God is certainly about to talk to Job.
- 15:38So h is it true? Like has God been
- 15:42trying to speak to Job through all this
- 15:46drama? Maybe. We don't know. There's no
- 15:48way to know that for sure. But is God
- 15:51about to speak? Oh yes, he is. And I
- 15:54just want to use that as an
- 15:55encouragement for you today. Maybe
- 15:56you're going through something very,
- 15:57very difficult. And up until this point,
- 16:00you don't think God has spoken. But can
- 16:02I tell you something? He can and he
- 16:04wants to. And um Ellie who is right
- 16:08about the fact that God is always
- 16:10communicating. The real question is, are
- 16:13we in a position to hear him, to
- 16:15communicate back, not just to
- 16:17communicate with him, but have him
- 16:19communicate with us? And my challenge
- 16:22for anybody who's walking through a
- 16:24really, really, really hard season is to
- 16:26really hunker down on hearing the voice
- 16:29of the Lord because hearing the voice of
- 16:32the Lord can can honestly sustain you
- 16:36for years while you're going through a
- 16:39really, really, really difficult time or
- 16:42a difficult trial or difficult season.
- 16:44So, I would admonish anyone who's heard
- 16:48um who's heard like this episode today
- 16:52and it's and it's just like, man, I
- 16:54don't know if I agree. Like, I've gone
- 16:56through a lot of pain and I just don't
- 16:58know if God's speaking to me in it.
- 17:00Whether or not he has does not determine
- 17:03whether or not he can and will. And so
- 17:05I'm believing that you will hear God's
- 17:07voice in the middle of pain even if you
- 17:09haven't already because God does use
- 17:12pain to really really really communicate
- 17:14with us. But you got to be intentional
- 17:17about going through pain and finding not
- 17:21just a silver lining but finding what
- 17:23God wants to reveal to you in the middle
- 17:26of pain. And that's not just true for
- 17:28Job and his friends. That's true for you
- 17:31and I. Tomorrow we've got day 3:23.
- 17:35We're going to be looking at the rest of
- 17:37Elhoo's speech or speeches. Uh we got
- 17:41Job chapters 34-37
- 17:44tomorrow. I'm super super excited. I
- 17:47feel like I can see the light at the end
- 17:48of the tunnel. After tomorrow, we only
- 17:51got two days left. So, we're flying
- 17:53through these. Uh love you guys. If
- 17:55you're on a streak, I'm so so so so so
- 17:57proud of you. If you're not on a streak,
- 17:59I love you. There's no condemnation for
- 18:01those of us who are in Christ Jesus.
- 18:03I'll see you right here tomorrow, same
