- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 320 here the
- 0:27Battle Department podcast. I'm super
- 0:29super excited. Today we've got Job
- 0:31chapters 25, 26, 27, and 28. Four
- 0:34chapters of the Bible. And in my humble
- 0:38opinion, I know I'm letting the cat out
- 0:39of the bag early, okay? But in my humble
- 0:41opinion, Job chapter 28 may be some of
- 0:45the best reading on wisdom that I've
- 0:49read in all of the wisdom literature of
- 0:52the Bible. It may be my favorite chapter
- 0:54of the book of Job so far. I'll say so
- 0:57far. It may be my favorite chapter of
- 1:01Job so far. And it may be one of my
- 1:04favorite chapters of the Bible. Job
- 1:06chapter 28 is gold. So, hey, if you
- 1:09haven't done the reading today, stop
- 1:11this video, pause the audio, go get the
- 1:13reading done because I I promise you,
- 1:15okay, Job chapter 25, very very short.
- 1:1826- 27, not long, but honestly, Job
- 1:22chapter 28 is incredible. Uh, and I
- 1:24don't want to short change chapters 25,
- 1:2626, and 27 that it's al it's all great
- 1:29reading, but man, Job chapter 28, gold.
- 1:32All right, if you have done the reading,
- 1:35let's dive into today's episode. Like
- 1:37always, I'm going to give you a context
- 1:39clue or two or three or whatever. Going
- 1:42to give you context, uh, historical,
- 1:44cultural, linguistic context, and then
- 1:46we're going to dive into a couple nerdy
- 1:48nuggets. I got five written down today.
- 1:50It's kind of been a rhythm I've been in
- 1:52as we have treked through the book of
- 1:54Job together. And then like always, I'll
- 1:56leave leave us off, send us off, kind
- 1:59of, you know, commission us with a
- 2:01timeless truth for the day. Let's dive
- 2:04in. All right. I've already started
- 2:06talking about Job chapter 28. So, I may
- 2:08as well kind of talk through what's
- 2:10going on with Job chapter 28 because it
- 2:14is kind of odd. Okay? It's an odd uh
- 2:17chapter. Okay? So most people are going
- 2:21to assume that Job chapter 28 is spoken
- 2:26by Job. All right. And why? Well, you
- 2:30know, we've been in this rhythm where
- 2:32Elephaz is going to talk. You know,
- 2:34Elephaz is going to talk, Bill Dad's
- 2:36going to talk, Zofar is going to talk,
- 2:38right? Like Elephaz talks, then Job
- 2:41responds, then Billad, then Job
- 2:42responds, then Zofar, then Job responds.
- 2:45All right? So, because we're in that
- 2:47rhythm, you can just kind of assume what
- 2:50what's going to happen in chapter 25 is
- 2:53Bill Dad's going to talk. Now, this is
- 2:55the shortest speech that Bill Dad's
- 2:57going to give. It's only six verses. So,
- 3:00you can look at chapter 25 right now and
- 3:02you know, you can look at it in in your
- 3:04Bible. It's short, man. It's like really
- 3:07really short. And then Job's going to
- 3:08start responding and he's going to
- 3:10respond in chapter 26. A lot of chaos
- 3:12language. We'll come back to that. And
- 3:14then chapter 27, I want to actually read
- 3:17these verse for you. So Job chapter 26
- 3:20verse one, just three words in the whole
- 3:22verse. Then Job replied, that's it. And
- 3:24then chapter 27:1 says this, "And Job
- 3:28continued his discourse." Okay,
- 3:30fantastic. Let's skip chapter 28. Let's
- 3:33go to chapter 29. Okay, says this. Job
- 3:36continued his discourse. So we get, you
- 3:40know, Job is talking in chapter 26:1.
- 3:43Job's talking in chapter 27:1. Job's
- 3:46talking in chapter 29:1. Fascinating.
- 3:49So, who's talking in chapter 28? Now,
- 3:51most people assume since Job is talking
- 3:54before chapter 28 and he's talking after
- 3:56chapter 28, Job's talking in chapter 28.
- 3:59And you would be incorrect if you came
- 4:01to that conclusion. It is not Job. Okay?
- 4:04And multiple versions of the Bible are
- 4:06going to actually like low-key get this
- 4:07wrong. Okay? So in the same way that you
- 4:10know chapter 26:1, 27:1, and 29:1
- 4:15all tell you like who's talking, a lot
- 4:19of versions of the Bible will insert a
- 4:23label here. Okay? So the ESV does it.
- 4:27The ESV is going to put a little heading
- 4:29in the NIV. The heading just says
- 4:32interlude. Okay? Where wisdom is found.
- 4:35That's what the NIV does. just says
- 4:37interlude where wisdom is found. But not
- 4:39every version of the Bible is going to
- 4:41do that. The in the ESV labels this job
- 4:44continues where is wisdom. So the ESV is
- 4:48making a claim that chapter 28 is
- 4:51written or is spoken by Job. However,
- 4:55the NIV is making it pretty clear this
- 4:58is not Job. So this is a debate. This
- 5:01may not even be a debate that you care
- 5:02about, but it is a debate. Now, here's
- 5:05the next little clue is the entirety of
- 5:09the book of Job is a kayazm. And good
- 5:12kayazms have something in the center.
- 5:15And the thing that's in the center is
- 5:16actually the whole point. It's the whole
- 5:18purpose. And guess what? The center of
- 5:20the entire book of Job is chapter 28.
- 5:23Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. You're
- 5:24right. Chapter 28 is the center of the
- 5:26kayazm. So, chapter 28:1 has no
- 5:30beginning. It doesn't tell us who's
- 5:32talking. You could assume it's Joe, but
- 5:34that would be an assumption. It's very,
- 5:35very different than everything else that
- 5:37we have in the entire book. And I, you
- 5:39know, is going to throw my hat in the
- 5:41ring here. I'm going to say I think that
- 5:44this is the narrator, the same narrator
- 5:47who tells us in chapter chapter one in
- 5:50the prologue in in the epilogue like,
- 5:54you know, narrates what's happening, the
- 5:56portions of Job that are narrative. I
- 5:58think the narrator is interjecting that
- 6:01human wisdom has gotten everybody to
- 6:04where as far as they can go and then
- 6:06chapter 28. I actually think that the
- 6:09entirety of the book of Job is built on
- 6:11chapter 28. All right. So that's our big
- 6:14context for the day. Okay. Bill Dad part
- 6:17three is Job chapter 25. Job's response
- 6:21to Billad and all of his friends is Job
- 6:24chapter 26 and 27. And then Job chapter
- 6:2728 is the center of our kayazm and the
- 6:31entire point of the book of Job. And
- 6:33those are the four chapters that we have
- 6:34assigned for us today. Okay. So if you
- 6:37kind of want to wrap your head around
- 6:39what are these four chapters doing here
- 6:42and what purpose do they serve at this
- 6:45point in juncture of the book? Chapters
- 6:4625, 26, 27, 28 are Bill Dad's, you know,
- 6:52last, you know, he's a thorn in the
- 6:54flesh. It's his last twisting of the
- 6:55thorn in Job's side. Job responds in
- 6:58chapter 26 and then in chapter 27, he's
- 7:01responding to all of his friends. But
- 7:03then chapter 28, wisdom starts to talk.
- 7:05So with that context, let's dive into
- 7:07our nerdy nuggets. Okay, Job chapter 25.
- 7:10This is Bill Dad part three. Family, the
- 7:13wait is over. My brand new book,
- 7:16Crushing Chaos, is out now and available
- 7:20everywhere books are [music] sold
- 7:22literally today. I walked into a Barnes
- 7:25& Noble and I signed a bunch of copies
- 7:27at a physical location. So, you can grab
- 7:30this book at a physical Barnes & Noble
- 7:33or you can go to a Books a Million or
- 7:35Amazon or anywhere books are [music]
- 7:37sold and grab a copy. If you enjoy
- 7:41reading the Bible from an ancient
- 7:43perspective, if you understand that the
- 7:46beauty of scripture is actually knowing
- 7:47it in context, then you'll love this
- 7:50book. And if there's any chaos in your
- 7:52personal life, I think that reading the
- 7:55Bible from an ancient [music]
- 7:57perspective can actually help to crush
- 7:58the chaos in your life. I think this
- 8:01book is going to be a New York Times
- 8:02bestseller. I really do. I think we
- 8:04wrote a good one. I think you should get
- 8:06a copy today. All right, back to the
- 8:10episode. And all I got to say here is,
- 8:13dude, Bill Dad only gets six verses. And
- 8:16here's the irony. The irony is that Bill
- 8:19Dad isn't wrong when it comes to the
- 8:21nature of God. It's just that he's wrong
- 8:24about Job. So, Job chapter 25, what does
- 8:27it say? It says this, "Dminion and all
- 8:30belong to God." Amen, Billad. He
- 8:32establishes order in the heights of
- 8:34heaven. Amen, Billad. Can his forces be
- 8:36numbered? On whom does his light not
- 8:39rise? How then can a mortal be righteous
- 8:42before God? Most most of us would say,
- 8:44"Yeah, Paul." This is what Paul argues
- 8:46in Romans. No, no one's righteous. No,
- 8:49not one. For all have sinned and fall
- 8:51short of the glory of God. Okay, so on
- 8:54in a real way, Bill Dad's right. Job,
- 8:56what's this right? No one's righteous
- 8:58before God. How can one born of woman be
- 9:02pure? Even if even the moon is not
- 9:05bright, and the stars are not pure in
- 9:08his eyes, how much less a mortal who is
- 9:11but a maggot? God dang, that's fighting
- 9:13words. Bill Dad calls Job a maggot. You
- 9:16maggot. That's so that's so mean. A
- 9:19human being who is only a worm. Dang.
- 9:22Job gets called a maggot and a worm.
- 9:24Now, if here's the irony is that in a
- 9:28little bit when Yahweh actually comes
- 9:31down to speak to Job, it's no different.
- 9:34The conclusion really is who's this
- 9:36mortal that dares talk to me? Who is
- 9:39this mortal that thinks he even has the
- 9:42right to like approach me? So again, and
- 9:45this is just what's so trippy with all
- 9:48the content from the book of Job is that
- 9:50these guys are right. It just happen to
- 9:52be wrong in terms of the application.
- 9:55He's wrong about Job. Job is blameless.
- 9:58Okay. So right but so wrong. Which that
- 10:02should be the theme. That should be the
- 10:03subtitle of the book of Job. Job so
- 10:05right but so wrong. Okay. It says this.
- 10:07Job 26:1. Then Job replied verse two.
- 10:11How you have helped the powerless. How
- 10:15you have saved the arm that is feeble.
- 10:19What advice you have offered to one
- 10:21without wisdom and what great insight
- 10:23you have displayed. This is sarcasm if
- 10:26you can't tell. Who has helped you utter
- 10:28these words? And whose spirit spoke from
- 10:32your mouth? Okay, this is just straight
- 10:34sarcasm. The dead are in deep anguish,
- 10:37those beneath the waters and all that
- 10:39live in them. Okay, and so then Job is
- 10:42going to break into a creation poem. We
- 10:45got a lot of these in the book of
- 10:46Psalms, right? these what I would call
- 10:48mythological
- 10:50kind of retellings or versions of the
- 10:53creation account. In this creation
- 10:55account, I would say that Job chapter 20
- 11:00uh 6 7-14, I would consider that a
- 11:03creation poem. He spreads out the
- 11:06northern skies over empty space. He
- 11:08suspends the earth over nothing. Okay,
- 11:11this stuff is beautiful. And like
- 11:13always, if we're going to have creation
- 11:15language or creation poems, we're going
- 11:18to get this mythological language. So
- 11:19what does Job say in Job 26 12 and 13?
- 11:24He says this, "By his power, he turned
- 11:27up the sea. By his wisdom, he cut Rahab
- 11:31to pieces. By his breath, the skies
- 11:33became fair. His hand pierced the
- 11:36gliding serpent." This is deeply
- 11:38mythological language. This is th this
- 11:40chapter chapter 26 with the creation
- 11:43myth and a focus on the deep and a
- 11:47particular sea monster named Rahab. Job
- 11:51is kind of foreshadowing chapters that
- 11:53we're going to get later on where God is
- 11:56going to respond. It's almost like God's
- 12:00responding to what Job says here in Job
- 12:02chapter 26. He's like, "I'm so glad you
- 12:05know how about the creation and about
- 12:08these sea dragons and sea monsters. Let
- 12:11me tell you some stuff that you don't
- 12:14know. Okay? Let me use this foundation
- 12:16of understanding that you've displayed
- 12:18here in chapter 26 and let's expand it.
- 12:21Let's build upon it." It's crazy to me
- 12:24that in the middle of Job's chaos, he is
- 12:28commending a god who contained chaos. I
- 12:31love this and I don't want to steal my
- 12:33thunder, but this is our timeless truth
- 12:35for the day. John the Baptist wasn't
- 12:36able to do this in the New Testament.
- 12:38Based on his own personal experiences,
- 12:41he made an assumption about Jesus based
- 12:44on personal experience. So since Jesus
- 12:47wasn't delivering him out of his
- 12:50suffering and his prison, he sent people
- 12:54to Jesus to ask, "Are you really the one
- 12:56or should we be looking for somebody
- 12:57else?" Bruh, am I the one? You are the
- 13:00one that said, "I'm the lamb of God that
- 13:02takes away the sins of the world." What
- 13:03are you talking about? You're the one
- 13:04that baptized me. You're what? What are
- 13:06you talking about? So, your personal
- 13:09offense with me is causing you to doubt
- 13:12who I am. There should be a massive
- 13:15firewall between your personal
- 13:17experiences with God and what you just
- 13:19know to be true about God. Right? I say
- 13:22this all the time. Whether or not God
- 13:24provides for you has nothing to do with
- 13:26whether or not he's a provider. Period.
- 13:29Whether or not he heals you has nothing
- 13:31to do with whether or not he's a healer.
- 13:33And people's personal testimonies are
- 13:36amazing. And we don't want to discredit
- 13:38anybody's personal testimony. But
- 13:40personal testimony can't be the only
- 13:43reason that you believe all these
- 13:45amazing things about God. We don't
- 13:47believe in these amazing things about
- 13:48God just because another person can
- 13:50prove that they happen. No, we believe
- 13:52amazing things about God because the
- 13:53Bible tells us amazing things about God.
- 13:57because this is the first cultural value
- 13:59at the garden. The Bible is how we know
- 14:01God. My personal experience is not how I
- 14:03know God. The Bible is how I know God.
- 14:06Okay, so that's kind of my timeless
- 14:07truth of the day. Um I'm just so
- 14:10impressed that Job is dealing with chaos
- 14:13and he can still say by his power he
- 14:16turned up the sea. By his wisdom, he cut
- 14:18Rahab into pieces. He can still
- 14:21acknowledge this is a God that crushes
- 14:22chaos. Low key. Shameless plug for this
- 14:26book, Crushing Chaos. Job admits Yahweh
- 14:28alone tames chaos. And and how do I know
- 14:31that Yahweh tames chaos? Because Job is
- 14:34using chaos language, the sea, the deep,
- 14:37rahab, to talk about God's dominance
- 14:41over the creation. Okay. Next little
- 14:44nerdy nugget is is Job chapter 27. Okay.
- 14:48Uh Job 27 verse 2 to4. We're going to
- 14:52have his oath of innocence. Job is going
- 14:54to give an oath of innocence. Listen
- 14:56here. Says this. As surely as God lives,
- 14:59who has denied me just as the Almighty
- 15:01who has made my life bitter. As long as
- 15:03I have life within me, the breath of God
- 15:05in my nostrils, my lips will not say
- 15:08anything wicked and my tongue will not
- 15:10utter lies. I'm not going to I'm not
- 15:12going to admit that I'm guilty when
- 15:14that's not the truth. Then it says this,
- 15:15verse 5, I will never admit you are in
- 15:18the right till I die. I will not deny my
- 15:21integrity. I will maintain my innocence
- 15:24and never let go of it. My conscience
- 15:27will not reproach me as long as I live.
- 15:32Job is like, I I have to I'm taking an
- 15:34oath of innocence. Now, this oath of
- 15:36innocence is going to get blown up into
- 15:39like expanded and he's going to have to
- 15:42give an oath of innocence in order to uh
- 15:46talk to the Lord. Okay. So, we're going
- 15:49to get more Oath of Innocence content
- 15:51from chapters 29 to 31, but this is a
- 15:54condensed version of that oath of
- 15:56innocence. All right. And then last,
- 15:58okay, chapter dang on 28. I love chapter
- 16:0228. It starts this way. There is a mine
- 16:05for silver and a place for gold where
- 16:08gold is refined. Iron is taken from the
- 16:10earth and copper is smelted from ore.
- 16:13Okay. So, these are all what? Precious
- 16:15metals. Okay. And jewelry. Okay. Silver,
- 16:19okay, gold, iron, okay, copper, all this
- 16:23stuff. Like there's a place where humans
- 16:26like take this stuff from the earth.
- 16:28Okay, mortals put an end to the
- 16:30darkness. They search out the farthest
- 16:32recesses for ore in the blackest
- 16:35darkness. Okay, so ore is another uh
- 16:38ingredient. Silver, gold, iron, copper,
- 16:40ore. Far from human dwellings, they cut
- 16:43a shaft in places untouched by human
- 16:45feet. Far from other people they dangle
- 16:48and sway the earth from which food
- 16:51comes. So now we're at food. Okay, food
- 16:53comes from the earth as well. Lapis
- 16:55lazeli, okay, comes from the rocks and
- 16:59dust contain nuggets of gold. Okay, no
- 17:02bird of prey knows that hidden path. No
- 17:05falcon's eye has seen it. Proud beasts
- 17:07do not set foot on it. No lion prowls
- 17:09there. Okay, people assault the flinty
- 17:12rocks with their hands. Blah blah blah
- 17:13blah. Okay. They tunnel. This is verse
- 17:1610. They tunnel through the rock. Their
- 17:18eyes see all its treasures. They search
- 17:22the sources of the rivers to bring
- 17:24hidden things to light. And then it's
- 17:27all going to shift. Here we go. But
- 17:29where can wisdom be found? Where does
- 17:32understanding dwell? Drop the mic. Like,
- 17:35that is such a freaking dope setup to
- 17:38say, but wisdom can't be found on the
- 17:40earth. You can find silver on the earth.
- 17:42You can find gold on the earth. You can
- 17:44find iron on the earth. You can find
- 17:45copper on the earth. You can find ore.
- 17:47You can find precious metals. You can
- 17:49find lapis lazeli. You can find
- 17:51treasures. You can find hidden things.
- 17:53You can do all that. Humans can get all
- 17:56that. They can search the sea. They can
- 17:58search the earth. They can find all this
- 18:01stuff, but they can't get wisdom. Verse
- 18:0413. No mortal comprehends its worth. It
- 18:07cannot be found in the land of the
- 18:09living. The deep says, "It's not in me."
- 18:12The sea says, "It is not with me." It
- 18:14cannot be bought with the finest gold,
- 18:17nor can its price be weighed out in
- 18:20silver. It cannot be bought with the
- 18:22gold of ophere. Oh fear, oh fear, with
- 18:28precious onyx or lapis lazeli. Neither
- 18:32gold nor crystal can compare with it,
- 18:34nor can it be had for jewels of gold.
- 18:38Okay, just on and on and on and on and
- 18:40on. And what is the point? Verse 20,
- 18:44chapter 28. Where then does wisdom come
- 18:47from? Since it doesn't come from the
- 18:48earth, you can't you can't dig for it.
- 18:51You can't mine it. Where does
- 18:53understanding dwell? It is hidden from
- 18:55the eyes of every living thing,
- 18:57concealed even from the birds in the
- 18:59sky. And then it all culminates in the
- 19:02last verse. And he said to the human
- 19:04race, "The fear of the Lord, that is
- 19:07wisdom. And to shun evil is
- 19:09understanding." What a good chapter of
- 19:11the Bible. Hey, there is no wisdom found
- 19:13on earth. God is the only one who can
- 19:16make you wise. God is the only one who
- 19:18can give wisdom. You can get gold out of
- 19:20the earth. You can get silver out of the
- 19:22earth. You can get copper out of the
- 19:23earth. You can get ore out of the earth.
- 19:24You can get a lot of things out of the
- 19:25earth. Can't get wisdom out of the
- 19:26earth. Can't dig for it. Can't tunnel
- 19:28for it. Can't mine for it. The only
- 19:30thing you can do is pray for it and fear
- 19:34the Lord and God will begin to make you
- 19:38wise. And if he makes you wise, oh man,
- 19:42then guess what? Everything becomes at
- 19:45your disposal. I don't know if you ever
- 19:47talked to somebody and you just think to
- 19:49yourself, "Yep, I would have never
- 19:50thought to ask that question or I would
- 19:52have never thought to ask myself that
- 19:53question or look at it that way." That
- 19:55person is wise. they're wise. And it is
- 19:58the pursuit of wisdom that actually
- 20:00begins to make you wise. And whether or
- 20:03not you even know where to go looking
- 20:05for wisdom is already a proof that
- 20:08you're either wise or not wise. Wisdom.
- 20:11You can hear proverbs being echoed. Hey,
- 20:14wisdom is more valuable than gold. It's
- 20:18more costly than crystals and jasper and
- 20:21all these other things. So the price of
- 20:24wisdom but also the person who
- 20:28ultimately holds the key for wisdom is
- 20:30the whole point of chapter 28. And now
- 20:33that we're at the kayazm. Okay, now
- 20:36we're at the halfway point and
- 20:38everything starts to shift from this
- 20:41point out and everything is going to
- 20:43start to mirror what's come before it.
- 20:46But that is chapter 28 and we already
- 20:49tackled our timeless truth for the day.
- 20:52We kind of did a little out of order. I
- 20:54gave you our context clue and I was
- 20:56giving you nerdy nuggets and then I kind
- 20:58of slipped our timeless truth in there
- 20:59and then I gave you my last nerdy nugget
- 21:01for the day. What a good day on the
- 21:05podcast. Tomorrow we've got day 321.
- 21:10Day 3:21 we're going to be looking at
- 21:12Job chapters 29 to31. I cannot wait.
- 21:17Same time, same place. I'll be here.
- 21:19Only question is, will you be here? If
- 21:22you're on a streak, I'm proud of you. If
- 21:23you're not on a streak, I love you.
- 21:25There is now no condemnation for those
- 21:27of you who are in Christ Jesus. Anyway,
- 21:29just playing. Love you. Love you. Love
- 21:31you. I'll see you tomorrow. Peace.
