- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible
- 0:13department.com to download a reading
- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 309 here at the
- 0:27Bible department. Today we are looking
- 0:29at Proverbs chapter 22, 23, and 24. And
- 0:33you'll notice if you've done the
- 0:35reading, you will notice that things
- 0:37have shifted. All right? So, I actually
- 0:40have a lot of context to share with you
- 0:43today. I know the last couple days we
- 0:45haven't really needed to go heavy into
- 0:46context. It's just like, hey, aphromisms
- 0:49by Solomon, right? These sentence
- 0:51sayings that we've been getting from
- 0:53Solomon for the last couple of days.
- 0:55Well, today we actually have some
- 0:58context. So, before I dive into context
- 1:00clues, let me say what I say every day.
- 1:03If you haven't done the reading, you can
- 1:04stop this video, pause the audio, go get
- 1:07the reading done. You're really, really,
- 1:09really want to go. You're really,
- 1:11really, really going to want to dig into
- 1:14these Proverbs today. It's a good change
- 1:17of pace. You're going to notice as soon
- 1:20as we get into Proverbs 22, just a
- 1:23difference in tone. And there's a good
- 1:25reason for that difference in tone. And
- 1:28so with no further ado, for everyone who
- 1:30has done the reading, let's dive into
- 1:32our context clues. Okay, this is perhaps
- 1:35the most intriguing part of the book of
- 1:38Proverbs and maybe actually one of the
- 1:40most interesting parts of scripture
- 1:41itself as this smaller collection of
- 1:45apherisms after Solomon's main section
- 1:48is very similar to collections that have
- 1:51been found in Egypt. in particular. They
- 1:54are very close to a collection known as
- 1:56the wisdom of, and I always struggle
- 1:58with this name, okay? So, you're gonna
- 1:59have to have grace for me. Amen.
- 2:02Amen.
- 2:05Amen. There we go. The wisdom of Amenop.
- 2:10Amen. I think I'm saying that correctly.
- 2:13Who knows? I don't know how to read
- 2:15hieroglyphics and I don't know how
- 2:17Egyptian words are pronounced. So, uh,
- 2:19the wisdom of Amenop. Okay. The dates
- 2:22for that are circa 1186 BC to 1170 BC.
- 2:28And this is a book of Egyptian proverbs.
- 2:31That's what makes this so fascinating.
- 2:33The bulk of our reading today is
- 2:35straight up proverbs taken from an
- 2:37Egyptian book of proverbs written around
- 2:40200 years before Solomon wrote his
- 2:43proverbs. It is thought by many scholars
- 2:46that what we have here are actually
- 2:50Egyptian proverbs that have been taken
- 2:52by an unknown Hebrew wise man and
- 2:55incorporated into the Hebrew wisdom
- 2:56tradition. They are not identical as the
- 3:01Egyptian original would of course have
- 3:04many references to pagan Egyptian gods.
- 3:07The Israelites would therefore have, I'm
- 3:10putting in air quotes, cleaned them up
- 3:12before adding them, which means they
- 3:15would adapt them for use in the Hebrew
- 3:18tradition. That means, let's take
- 3:20Proverbs 22. I just want to give you an
- 3:23example. Proverbs 22 23. Well, we can
- 3:27start at verse 22. Do not exploit the
- 3:29poor because they are poor. And do not
- 3:32crush the needy in court. for the Lord.
- 3:35Okay, for Yahweh uh will take up their
- 3:38case and will exact life for life. All
- 3:42right, that proverb 22 22-23
- 3:47says Yahweh. So when when we say like
- 3:50clean them up in the original Egyptian
- 3:54manuscript, it would have said Rah,
- 3:56okay, or maybe some other pagan god. And
- 3:59so what has happened with all of these
- 4:01proverbs? And you can see it starts at
- 4:03verse 17. Chapter 22:17. There's a
- 4:06little heading in my Bible that says 30
- 4:09sayings of the wise. Okay. So Solomon's
- 4:12content is done by verse 16. And then we
- 4:15have a break in the middle of the
- 4:17chapter. In chapter 22:1 17, we're now
- 4:21going to get 30 sayings of the wise.
- 4:23Well, these 30 sayings of the wise are
- 4:26straight up Egyptian proverbs and
- 4:29they've been yalified. So the the words
- 4:33like Rah or Horus or Apep or whatever
- 4:37Egyptian god, you know, the the wise men
- 4:42of Egypt would have attributed these
- 4:45aphromisms to the the Hebrew writers
- 4:47have taken those pagan names out and put
- 4:50the word or the name Yahweh in. Okay,
- 4:54this is fascinating and gives valuable
- 4:57insight into both the ancient world of
- 4:59wisdom and the way Yahweh often uses
- 5:01surprising sources for his messages to
- 5:04Israel. It shows how connected this
- 5:06ancient wisdom world was that Hebrew
- 5:09wisdom writers were aware of Egyptian
- 5:12wisdom and respected it. That's so
- 5:15important, right? We can see another
- 5:17glimpse of this in first kings 4:30 when
- 5:20Solomon's wisdom was compared to the
- 5:22best examples of wisdom traditions at
- 5:25the time. Here's what it says. So that
- 5:27Solomon's wisdom surpassed the wisdom of
- 5:29all the people of the east and all the
- 5:31wisdom of Egypt, which means Egypt was
- 5:34known for producing wisdom collections
- 5:37and wisdom content. Egypt was known to
- 5:39have great wisdom. Okay, the
- 5:41civilization was built on wisdom. And
- 5:44this uh verse here in First Kings 4:30
- 5:48is used to show just how wise Solomon
- 5:50was. If he's wiser than the wisdom of
- 5:53Egypt, then that must mean he's really,
- 5:55really, really wise. And so what we see
- 5:57here in Proverbs is almost like we get
- 6:00First Kings 4:30 played out in real
- 6:02time. Let's put the wisdom of Egypt
- 6:05right next to the wisdom of Solomon and
- 6:08anybody can judge whether or not it's as
- 6:10wise or less wise or more wise or
- 6:13whatever. Okay, here's another
- 6:15fascinating angle on this. It gives a
- 6:17flip side to the way the nations are
- 6:19often portrayed in scripture. Up until
- 6:21this point, it's really just the
- 6:23negative influence of idolatry, false
- 6:26susarins, oppression that we've seen in
- 6:28terms of like the nation's contribution
- 6:30to what we have in the scriptures. And
- 6:32so, it's almost like all gentile
- 6:35influences lumped together under the
- 6:37banner of paganism, okay? And pagan
- 6:40influence that must be avoided. In fact,
- 6:42you get the message loud and clear
- 6:44through the prophets that Israel was
- 6:46meant to draw the nations closer to
- 6:48Yahweh. But instead, the nations had
- 6:50drawn Israel further from Yahweh. But
- 6:54here, here in Proverbs, we have gentile
- 6:58wisdom from none other than the original
- 7:01great enemy of Israel, Egypt, that is
- 7:04seen as valuable. Okay. Obviously, you
- 7:08know, idolatrous idolatrous references
- 7:11and names and pagan gods are removed and
- 7:14it's cleaned up. But still, there's a
- 7:16redeeming quality to this secular
- 7:19wisdom. And this wisdom has enough value
- 7:22to be added to a work that would be
- 7:25added to scripture itself. Okay? So,
- 7:28that is incredible. By the way, this
- 7:31isn't like the first time scripture has
- 7:33done this. All right? What might
- 7:34surprise the casual readers of the Bible
- 7:37is how much of it finds its roots
- 7:39outside of Israel. Much is, shall we
- 7:42say, borrowed from the nations around
- 7:44it. Israel's creation stories share much
- 7:47in common with the Egyptian ones. Its
- 7:49flood in other ancient stories share a
- 7:52lot in common with Mesopotamian stories.
- 7:55Israel was not the first culture to have
- 7:58a mobile temple containing their God in
- 8:00a box. In fact, the design of the
- 8:03tabernacle in later temples shares the
- 8:06same layout of other temples and shrines
- 8:09that belong to pagans. Okay? Even in the
- 8:11New Testament, Paul uses hymns to Zeus
- 8:14and other Greek philosophy quotes and
- 8:17poems to speak about Jesus. And beyond
- 8:20this, the church has a long history of
- 8:22using Roman and other cultures images to
- 8:24tell the gospel story. This is what we
- 8:27do. Like the legacy of the
- 8:30Judeo-Christian faith is a legacy of
- 8:33appropriating culture. Like essentially
- 8:35Judeo-Christian
- 8:37worldview essentially says, "Oh, that's
- 8:40true." And if it's true, it reflects
- 8:42God. So let's go ahead and take it.
- 8:45Whatever is true, anything that's true,
- 8:47if it's wise, if it's true, if it's
- 8:49good, yeah, every human's been made in
- 8:52the image of God. So that means that
- 8:54every culture has innate elements that
- 8:58reflect the glory of God and every
- 9:00culture has innate elements that are
- 9:02opposed to the kingdom of God. And so
- 9:05this is just theology and action, okay?
- 9:08Us having a bunch of Egyptian proverbs
- 9:11right here smack dab in the middle of
- 9:13your Bible, like I don't know. You got
- 9:16to wrestle with that. And I'm trying to
- 9:17help us kind of process that together.
- 9:20Family, the wait is over. My brand new
- 9:23book, Crushing Chaos, is [music] out now
- 9:26and available everywhere books are sold
- 9:29literally today. I walked into a Barnes
- 9:32& Noble and I signed a bunch of copies
- 9:35at a physical location. So, you can grab
- 9:38this book at a physical Barnes & Noble
- 9:40or you can go to a Books a Million or
- 9:43Amazon or anywhere books are sold and
- 9:46grab a copy. If you enjoy reading the
- 9:49Bible from an ancient perspective, if
- 9:51you understand that the beauty of
- 9:54scripture is actually knowing it in
- 9:55context, then you'll love this book.
- 9:58[music]
- 9:58And if there's any chaos in your
- 10:00personal life, I think that reading the
- 10:03Bible from an ancient perspective can
- 10:05actually help to crush the [music] chaos
- 10:07in your life. I think this book is going
- 10:09TO BE A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER. I
- 10:11really do. I think we wrote a good one.
- 10:13I think you [music] should get a copy
- 10:15today. All right, back to the episode.
- 10:18All right, let's wrap this section up so
- 10:20that we can get to nerdy nuggets. Okay,
- 10:21what are we to make of all this? Well,
- 10:23simply put, God speaks to us in our own
- 10:26language. God wants to communicate in
- 10:28ways that people will actually
- 10:30understand. Okay, God is not really
- 10:34interested in talking to us in ways that
- 10:35we're not familiar with. This is what we
- 10:37find in scripture, that same everyday
- 10:40experience of God speaking in a time,
- 10:42language, and culture. But because it is
- 10:45the Bible, those cultures and linguistic
- 10:47references are now frozen in place as
- 10:49they were written down and added to
- 10:51God's word. Okay. So, we're going to
- 10:53look at the 30 sayings of the wise that
- 10:57start in verse 17 of chapter 22. And
- 11:00they're actually going to go all the way
- 11:02up until chapter
- 11:0525.
- 11:07Okay? Once we get to chapter 25, we get
- 11:09back to Solomon. Okay? So, the majority
- 11:12of our reading today, straight Egyptian
- 11:15pagan wisdom, and I love it. Let me give
- 11:18you uh let's move into our nerdy
- 11:20nuggets. I don't have a lot of time.
- 11:21Just going to rapid fire some of these
- 11:23that I just think are really good. Okay.
- 11:25Proverbs 22:1 says this, "A good name is
- 11:28more desirable than great riches. To be
- 11:30esteemed is better than silver or gold."
- 11:33Amen. A good name. What do I want to
- 11:35pass along to my son? A good name. That
- 11:37the Orango name is a good name.
- 11:39>> [snorts]
- 11:39>> And if you have a bad credit score, you
- 11:41don't have a good name. Let's just start
- 11:43with that, okay? A good name. You want a
- 11:45good name. A good name is what would
- 11:47make a bank loan you money that you have
- 11:49a good name. That means you pay your
- 11:51debts. Okay? A good name. So, [snorts]
- 11:54you can't say, "Well, everybody that I
- 11:56know trusts me, but the bank doesn't
- 11:58trust me." No, no, no, no. A good name.
- 12:01Okay? A good name. And uh I get it. Life
- 12:04happens. But you need to you need you
- 12:06should have a good name. Okay? Proverbs
- 12:0822 24-2 says this, "Do not make friends
- 12:11with a hot-tempered person. Do not
- 12:13associate with one easily angered, for
- 12:16you may learn their ways and get
- 12:18yourself ins snared." Two things that I
- 12:21want to say about that. Number one,
- 12:23there's a dangers to being around
- 12:24hot-tempered people, easily angered
- 12:26people. Also, what this proverb is
- 12:29really getting at is that the
- 12:31characteristics of your friendship group
- 12:34are going to eventually rub off on you.
- 12:35And if you think they're not, then
- 12:37you've placed confidence in the flesh.
- 12:38And at some point, you need to be humble
- 12:40and realize I'm influenced. I'm not the
- 12:43only one with influence. There are
- 12:46people with influence who are
- 12:47influencing me. Okay. Proverbs 22:29. Do
- 12:50you see someone skilled in their work?
- 12:52They will serve before kings. They will
- 12:54not serve before officials of low rank.
- 12:56I love this verse. And I remember
- 12:59learning this verse when I was a young
- 13:00adult. And I began to realize that
- 13:03although I was raised in poverty, you
- 13:04know, my dad was incarcerated for 18
- 13:06years, took me to a crack house when I
- 13:08was five, my mom was pregnant at the age
- 13:09of 12, was on welfare and government
- 13:12assistance and section 8 and, you know,
- 13:15everything else just raised in poverty.
- 13:17I began to realize that excellence was
- 13:19my way out of poverty. But you see what
- 13:22it says? Do you see someone skilled in
- 13:24their work? They'll serve before kings.
- 13:26So I decided I'm going to be the most
- 13:28skilled communicator I can be. If if if
- 13:31preaching is what I'm going to do, you
- 13:32better believe I'm going to be the most
- 13:33skilled person at it. Okay? So, a
- 13:36culture of excellence, being excellent,
- 13:38being detail- oriented, being skilled,
- 13:40incredible. Incredible. Proverbs chapter
- 13:4323:4,
- 13:45do not wear yourself out to get rich. Do
- 13:48not trust your own cleverness. That's a
- 13:50good one, man. We got a lot of people
- 13:52wearing themselves out to get rich. What
- 13:54should you wear yourself out to do?
- 13:55Proverbs chapter 6:es 1 through to 5
- 13:59says that there are some things you
- 14:00should wear yourself out for and it's
- 14:02not to get rich. Okay. Proverbs chapter
- 14:056 verses 1-5. So do this my son. And
- 14:08then verse three. So do this my son to
- 14:10free yourself since you have fallen into
- 14:12your neighbor's hands. Go to the point
- 14:13of exhaustion and give your neighbor no
- 14:16rest. Allow no sleep to your eyes, no
- 14:18slumber to your eyelids. Free yourself
- 14:20like a gazelle from the hand of the
- 14:22hunter, like a bird from the snare of
- 14:24the fowler. Okay. So, it's saying no,
- 14:26no, no, no. Don't. If you're in debt,
- 14:29you go to the point of exhaustion. So, I
- 14:32want to create some tension here.
- 14:33Chapter 23:4. We do not wear ourselves
- 14:36out to get rich. But Proverbs chapter 6
- 14:39says, "It is okay to wear yourself out
- 14:41to get out of debt." And those are
- 14:42different. Okay. Next one. Rapid fire.
- 14:45Okay. Proverbs 23
- 14:4810. Proverbs 23 10 and 11 says,"Do not
- 14:53move an ancient boundary stone or
- 14:54encroach on the fields of the fatherless
- 14:57for their defender is strong. He will
- 15:00take up their case against you." Okay,
- 15:03so God again, God loves the poor. Okay?
- 15:06Do not move an ancient boundary stone or
- 15:09encroach on the fields of the
- 15:10fatherless. Okay? God loves the orphan.
- 15:13Okay? And those who don't have a father,
- 15:16God becomes their father. he becomes
- 15:18their defender. That's a good good good
- 15:20good verse. Okay? Don't take advantage
- 15:22of people who are in a precarious place
- 15:26in society. Like don't don't take
- 15:30advantage of the vulnerable. Don't do
- 15:32that. Chapter 23
- 15:3419. Listen my son and be wise and let
- 15:36your heart and set your heart on the
- 15:38right path. Do not join those who drink
- 15:41too much wine. Don't do it. Do you got
- 15:44friends who drink a lot? Mm-
- 15:45[clears throat] steer clear. And this
- 15:46before vehicles. So the issue isn't just
- 15:49getting hit by a, you know, being in the
- 15:51car with a drunk driver. It's just this
- 15:53is not wise. It's not good to associate
- 15:55with people who drink a lot or gorge
- 15:57themselves on meat. For drunkards and
- 15:59glutton become poor and drowsiness
- 16:02clothes them in rags. Okay. These kind
- 16:06of people become poor. Drunkards and
- 16:07gluttons. That's just like saying people
- 16:10who love pleasure are going to become
- 16:11poor. Don't do it. Okay. That should be
- 16:14six rapid fire verses. Okay. Number
- 16:17seven, Proverbs 23 verse 29. Who has
- 16:21woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who
- 16:23has complaints? Who has needless
- 16:25bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Lot of
- 16:28rhetorical questions back to back to
- 16:29back to back to back. Those who linger
- 16:31over wine. Uh-oh. Uhoh. Now remember,
- 16:36these are written by Egyptian heathens.
- 16:39These ain't even this is not even like
- 16:41Hebrew content. This is written by the
- 16:44strongest content to oppose alcohol
- 16:48written by pagans. Actually, one of the
- 16:51biggest uh reasons that I have
- 16:54completely gone like an kind of
- 16:56anti-alcohol is because there's this big
- 16:59movement right now that's just based on
- 17:01health that has proven scientifically
- 17:04that all alcohol is poison. Like that
- 17:06it's not even good for you. like from a
- 17:08just from a health benefits perspective.
- 17:12People who are not Christian are going
- 17:15totally absent when it comes to alcohol.
- 17:18Meanwhile, you got Christians fighting
- 17:20for their Christian liberties, you know,
- 17:22fighting for their Christian right to
- 17:24drink. So backwards. You got a a secular
- 17:28world of people who are making health
- 17:30decisions to coal plunge and join run
- 17:32clubs and not drink. And then you got
- 17:34Christians over here who are fat and
- 17:37drinking. Oh man, this is just it's
- 17:41basswards. That's what it is. It's bass
- 17:44awards. Anytime you got, you know,
- 17:48people that don't know God leading the
- 17:50way, we got we got a problem. So So I
- 17:53decided, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,
- 17:54wait, wait. No way I'm letting unsaved,
- 17:58lost people make healthier decisions
- 18:01than me. And here we have Egyptian pagan
- 18:04heathens who are warning against the
- 18:07power of wine. Those who linger over
- 18:09wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed
- 18:11wine. Do not gaze at wine when it is
- 18:14red, when it sparkles in the cup, when
- 18:16it goes down smoothly. In the end, it
- 18:18bites like a snake and poisons like a
- 18:21viper. Don't get fooled, man. Don't get
- 18:23fooled. Okay, that's 23
- 18:2629-32.
- 18:28Uh then Proverbs chapter 24 13 is
- 18:32another one in my top 10 for the day.
- 18:35Proverbs 24:13.
- 18:38Eat honey, my son, for it is good. Honey
- 18:40from the comb is sweet to your taste.
- 18:43Know also that wisdom is like honey for
- 18:46you. It tastes good. Wisdom tastes good.
- 18:48I love the visual. Your like I could
- 18:50taste honey right now. And essentially
- 18:52the the author, whoever this, you know,
- 18:54Egyptian author is, the original
- 18:56Egyptian author and whoever the Hebrew
- 18:58redactor is or editor is saying, "Yep,
- 19:01yep. Wisdom is like honey for you. If
- 19:03you find it, there is a future hope for
- 19:05you, and your hope will not be cut off.
- 19:08Eat, eat, eat wisdom. Consume wisdom
- 19:11like it's honey." That's good, man.
- 19:13Proverbs 24:16. For though the righteous
- 19:16fall seven times, they rise again, but
- 19:18the wicked stumble when calamity
- 19:20strikes. Why do the wicked keep getting
- 19:22up? Because they have no ego. They're
- 19:25not dependent on their own selves.
- 19:27They're dependent on the Lord. When the
- 19:28wicked person falls in public, they're
- 19:31so full of shame because everything is
- 19:34based on them. It's really it's a pride
- 19:36issue. But for the righteous person,
- 19:39it's all God. You know, I like I'm not
- 19:41embarrassed, right, to fall, which gives
- 19:44me the determination to get back up. I
- 19:46love it. Proverbs 24:30 is the last one.
- 19:49I went past the field of a slugard. That
- 19:53means a lazy person, slothful person,
- 19:55past the vineyard of someone who has no
- 19:58sense. Thorns had come up everywhere.
- 20:00The ground was covered with weeds, and
- 20:03the stone wall was in ruins. I want you
- 20:06to be thinking about the Garden of Eden
- 20:08here. There's strong Eden imagery. Verse
- 20:1032. I applied my heart to what I
- 20:12observed and learned a lesson from what
- 20:14I saw. A little sleep, a little slumber,
- 20:17a little folding of the hands to rest,
- 20:19and poverty will come on you like a
- 20:21thief, and scarcity like an armed man. I
- 20:24have that memorized. A little sleep, a
- 20:27little slumber, a little folding of the
- 20:30hands to rest, and poverty will come on
- 20:32you like a thief, and scarcity like an
- 20:34armed man. It's a good one to memorize.
- 20:36Not originally a Hebrew proverb, but
- 20:41Egyptian proverb that got adopted,
- 20:43Yahwified, and put into our Bible. All
- 20:46right, let me leave off with a timeless
- 20:48truth for the day. It's Proverbs 22 28.
- 20:51Proverbs chapter 22 28. And it says
- 20:56this, "Do not move an ancient boundary
- 20:58stone set up by your ancestors." Do not
- 21:00move an ancient boundary stone set up by
- 21:02your ancestors. So, let me give it to
- 21:04you as a nerdy nugget and as a timeless
- 21:06truth. What is this verse saying? It's
- 21:08saying don't um steal property from your
- 21:11neighbor. Okay? Boundary stones are
- 21:14there to make sure that everyone who got
- 21:16the land they inherited from their great
- 21:18great great great great grandparents
- 21:21that all the land is still theirs. Okay?
- 21:23I don't know if you have ever been on
- 21:25TikTok and you watch people argue over
- 21:28where a fence should be to separate
- 21:30their land. It's just like, man, people
- 21:32just fighting tooth and nail over like a
- 21:34couple of inches or a couple of feet.
- 21:36So, some things just haven't changed.
- 21:37And so, the proverb is saying, don't be
- 21:39dishonest. Don't lie, don't move a
- 21:41boundary stone. Boundary stones are put
- 21:44in place to know the boundary of their
- 21:46land versus yours. Okay? But then I
- 21:48think it has a timeless truth to it as
- 21:50well. Number one, boundaries are
- 21:53important. It's important to know where
- 21:55my land ends and yours begins. It's
- 21:59really important to know how to suffer
- 22:02not for someone but with someone. How to
- 22:05create proper boundaries in my life. My
- 22:08therapist diagnosed me with inshment
- 22:11years ago and it meant that me and my
- 22:13mother had no boundaries. Okay, we had
- 22:15an inshed relationship and uh I carried
- 22:19her burdens for her. Instead of helping
- 22:21her carry her burdens, I carried her
- 22:23burdens for her. This is a codependent
- 22:25relationship. So I think the Thomas
- 22:27truth here is whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa.
- 22:29You got to know where the boundary
- 22:30stones are. You got to have good
- 22:31boundaries. And then next set up by your
- 22:34ancestors. Okay. Do not move an ancient
- 22:37boundary stone set up by your ancestors.
- 22:40I think the emphasis in this verse is on
- 22:43the words ancient and ancestors. Which
- 22:46means there are some things that we've
- 22:48inherited as Christians that are based
- 22:50on 2,000 years of history and we
- 22:53shouldn't go meddling with it. Okay. Um,
- 22:55so if every single Christian from the
- 22:59time of Jesus up until a hundred years
- 23:02ago all said homosexuality is a sin,
- 23:05then I'm not about to trust some new
- 23:07theologian who now all of a sudden 2,000
- 23:11years later, you know, wants to break
- 23:13off from the boundary stone, the ancient
- 23:16boundary stone that God set up. So I'm
- 23:19leerary of like new ideas. That doesn't
- 23:22mean I'm not down to innovate. It just
- 23:24means the moment we start going, you
- 23:27know, veering away from what
- 23:29Christianity actually is and has been
- 23:32historically, I get like I get I start
- 23:36to glitch. I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 23:38whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. We
- 23:39need to stay tethered to what historical
- 23:41Orthodox Christianity is. I think that's
- 23:44very, very, very, very, very important.
- 23:46We're not making up our own rules out
- 23:47here. There's an ancient way to do this.
- 23:51There's a way that our ancestors have
- 23:52taught us how to do this. And I think we
- 23:54should be faithful to run our leg of
- 23:58this relay race because uh we're not the
- 24:01first generation to make this stuff up
- 24:03and we're not the last. So, all right. I
- 24:06hope that's a helpful Thomas Truth.
- 24:08Tomorrow we are in Proverbs 25 to 27 for
