Full transcript
- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible
- 0:13department.com to download a reading
- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 306 here at the
- 0:27Bible department. Today we are looking
- 0:29at Proverbs chapters 13,14 and 15. And
- 0:34if you can't tell, I love the book of
- 0:36Proverbs. I love wisdom. I think that
- 0:39there is such great benefit to just
- 0:42leading a life of wisdom. So, I've been
- 0:46really, really, really enjoying our
- 0:48journey through the book of Proverbs.
- 0:50I'm going to try to actually give you my
- 0:52top 10 today. All right. So, no intense
- 0:55context clues. Uh obviously the book of
- 0:58proverbs doesn't work that way. There
- 1:00are not really like a historical moment
- 1:04where we can attach these sayings of the
- 1:07wise. I may try to give you some just
- 1:10some context for maybe wisdom literature
- 1:12in general or the book of proverbs in
- 1:14general tomorrow or the next day. But
- 1:17for today, I really do want to get
- 1:19through my nerdy nuggets aka Dr. Manny's
- 1:22top 10 verses of the day. Okay? like TRL
- 1:26style. I'm so old. I just said TRL.
- 1:29Anybody, if you remember what TRL is,
- 1:32like let me know in the comments if
- 1:34you're watching this on YouTube. Okay,
- 1:35if you know what TRL means, tell me like
- 1:38what it stands for. What does the T
- 1:40mean? What does the R mean? What does
- 1:41the L mean? And uh put that in the
- 1:43comments and uh prove that you're a
- 1:46millennial. Okay, let's see. Let's see.
- 1:48Cam is Gen Z. He's in the studio with
- 1:50me. Do you know what TRL is? HE DOESN'T
- 1:52KNOW. CAM DOESN'T know what TRL is
- 1:55because he's too young. So, TRL. Okay.
- 1:57So, you know, TRL was the top 10 music
- 2:00videos of the day. Okay. And if you know
- 2:02what it stands for, put it in the
- 2:04comments. BUT 106 AND PARK, BABY. We're
- 2:07going to do top 10 Dr. Manny's top 10
- 2:09Bible verses from Proverbs chapters 13
- 2:12to 15 today. And we're going to get
- 2:13through all 10. Okay. We tried to do
- 2:15this yesterday. I think we only got
- 2:16through like six or seven, but today
- 2:18we're going to actually get through 10.
- 2:19ALL RIGHT. STARTING AT NUMBER ONE, AND
- 2:21THESE are no in no particular order. The
- 2:24order is I'm going to start at, you
- 2:26know, the earliest verse in chapter 13
- 2:28and go to the last verse of chapter 15.
- 2:30So, it's not an actual top 10 in terms
- 2:33of like popularity or how much I like
- 2:36them, just in order of how they appear
- 2:38in scripture. Okay. So, Proverbs chapter
- 2:4113:3
- 2:43and uh it says this, all these are these
- 2:45are just my favorites as I did the
- 2:47reading today. Proverbs 13:3, "Those who
- 2:50guard their lips,
- 2:53preserve their lives, but those who
- 2:55speak rashly will come to ruin." Um,
- 2:59it's funny because I think that the
- 3:00enemy loves to attack you at the point
- 3:03of your greatest strength. And so, I
- 3:05would say probably my greatest weakness
- 3:07for years was my tongue. You know, just
- 3:11having a sharp tongue, that's also my
- 3:13greatest gift. So, if there's anybody
- 3:15out there who your greatest gift and
- 3:17your greatest weakness kind of go hand
- 3:18in hand, you're not alone. That doesn't
- 3:21make you weird. That actually is quite
- 3:22normal for the enemy to want to
- 3:25neutralize your strength with a
- 3:28corresponding weakness. Okay. So, Pastor
- 3:31Robert Moo, okay, my pastor in Dallas,
- 3:34really, really helped me with this one.
- 3:35He said, "Manny," he said, "Man, a
- 3:38serial killer and a surgeon are both
- 3:40using a knife to cut people." But he
- 3:43said, "A serial killer is obviously, you
- 3:45know, ruining that person's life and is
- 3:47going to kill them and going to go to
- 3:49jail, you know, if they're caught
- 3:50forever. It's going to go to prison
- 3:51forever." But a surgeon is actually
- 3:55going to get asked to do it again and
- 3:57again and again because it's not the cut
- 4:00that brings that brings death. It's the
- 4:03ability to to use the tool. And he said,
- 4:06"Words cut, man. Words cut." And every
- 4:09time you use your words, you're either
- 4:11going to be a serial killer or you're
- 4:13going to be a surgeon. And he's like, "I
- 4:15want you to just get surgical with your
- 4:16words." And uh he really helped me. And
- 4:19uh another person in my life, Pastor
- 4:21Jimmy Rollins, remember him saying to
- 4:23me, "You've been trying to be filtered
- 4:25your whole life. You don't need to be
- 4:26filtered. You need to be tactful." And I
- 4:29just began in the last probably two to
- 4:30three years really, you know, realizing
- 4:34the power of words and the power of
- 4:37using precise words and the power of not
- 4:40just saying it out of passion, but
- 4:43really doing the hard work to define
- 4:46words and to use the right words and uh
- 4:49to be tactful, to be surgical and not
- 4:53just be loose or flippant or careless
- 4:56with words. And I would say that if you
- 4:58if I just examine my own leadership
- 5:00style, you know, in my early 20s, my
- 5:04late 20s, my early 30s, I would have
- 5:06said I was a I was a passionate leader.
- 5:09I was an energetic leader. I I was I was
- 5:12a lot of the things that I am now, but I
- 5:14was also a leader who lacked hair,
- 5:18precision, precision, and tact with when
- 5:21it came to words. And uh and so Proverbs
- 5:2413:3, woo, speaking my language, those
- 5:27who guard their lips preserve their
- 5:30lives. That there's something about
- 5:32speech and talking that's that's
- 5:35completely connected with the quality of
- 5:37your life. Okay? And but those who speak
- 5:40rashly will come to ruin. Sometimes you
- 5:43just got to be quiet. Sometimes you just
- 5:45got to say nothing until you are in a
- 5:48position where you can be tactful.
- 5:51Sometimes we're trying to be tactful,
- 5:53but you're angry or you're offended or
- 5:55you're too emotional. And so, honestly,
- 5:59if there's something that's just added
- 6:00great value to my life and has kept me
- 6:03from ruining relationships over the last
- 6:06couple years, it's been Proverbs 13:3.
- 6:09And the two leaders in my life that have
- 6:11really made the this verse come to life,
- 6:14it's Pastor Robert Moo, Pastor Jimmy
- 6:15Roll. So, shout out to them. They're
- 6:17amazing. All right. Number two, Proverbs
- 6:20chapter 13 verse 10. Man, this one's
- 6:23good. Says this, where there is strife,
- 6:26THERE IS PRIDE. OH, THAT IS GOOD. WHERE
- 6:30THERE IS STRIFE, there's pride. If you
- 6:34have strife with another person,
- 6:36somebody's lacking humility in this
- 6:39equation. And actually, one of the
- 6:41things that I've learned as a leader is
- 6:43the more humbly I can be or the more
- 6:48humble I can be or the more humbly I can
- 6:52speak or present myself in any
- 6:54conversation, the more that I decrease
- 6:58the likelihood of there being strife on
- 7:00the team. Anytime there's strife,
- 7:02there's pride. And here's how I see
- 7:05pride manifesting itself. A lot of times
- 7:08people thinking their way is the right
- 7:10way or their way is the only way to do
- 7:12things and so their ideas they start to
- 7:15hold their ideas uh not open-handed but
- 7:18close-handed. That's pride. You are
- 7:21valuing your perspective and your
- 7:24opinion so highly that nobody can tell
- 7:28you that that's not the right way to do
- 7:30it. That's just your way to do it.
- 7:33Humility says there's tons of ways to do
- 7:35it. I'm not married to the way that we
- 7:37do it. I'm just married to the
- 7:39destination, man. I'm married to to us
- 7:41getting it done. And uh people who want
- 7:43to go fast, go alone. People who want to
- 7:45go far, take a team. And it's going to
- 7:47take a lot of humility to die to the way
- 7:50that you may want to do things or to
- 7:52stop believing that you have the best
- 7:54ideas all the time because where there
- 7:57is strife, there is pride. So, anytime
- 8:00there's, you know, just h this, you
- 8:03know, this relationship's kind of taking
- 8:05a lot of effort, somebody's operating in
- 8:07pride. Somebody, somebody, you want to
- 8:10know what humility says? I could be
- 8:11wrong. Hey, man. I My way's not the only
- 8:14way to do it. My way is not the only way
- 8:15to see it. When there is strife, there
- 8:18is pride. And here's what's also pride.
- 8:21Okay? When there's disagreement and
- 8:23somebody just goes, "ALL RIGHT, LET'S DO
- 8:24IT YOUR WAY. Let's Yeah, let's do it
- 8:26your way." And they just like, so those
- 8:28are two extremes. One, fighting to do it
- 8:30your way is pride. Completely giving up
- 8:32and just and just, you know, letting the
- 8:35other person do it their way is pride.
- 8:38You want to know what takes humility?
- 8:40Compromise.
- 8:41Negotiating. You know what takes? You
- 8:44know what it takes? Humility? You know,
- 8:46meeting in the middle. Hey, how how can
- 8:48we in what way can we collaborate with
- 8:51each other? All right. Oh gosh, it's not
- 8:53looking like I'm going to be able to get
- 8:54through 10. Okay. But wisdom is found in
- 8:56those who take advice. Okay? So, where
- 8:58there's strife, there's pride, but
- 9:00wisdom is found in those who take
- 9:01advice. All right. Number three, family.
- 9:04The wait is over. My brand new book,
- 9:07Crushing Chaos, is out now and available
- 9:10everywhere books are sold. Literally
- 9:14today, I walked into a Barnes & Noble
- 9:16and I signed a bunch of copies at a
- 9:19physical location. So, you can grab this
- 9:21book at a physical Barnes & Noble or you
- 9:24can go to a Books a Million or Amazon or
- 9:27anywhere books are sold and grab a copy.
- 9:30If you enjoy reading the Bible from an
- 9:33ancient perspective, if you understand
- 9:36that the beauty of scripture is actually
- 9:38knowing it in context, then you'll love
- 9:41this book. And if there's any chaos in
- 9:43your personal life, I [music] think that
- 9:45reading the Bible from an ancient
- 9:47perspective can actually help to crush
- 9:49the chaos in your life. I think this
- 9:52book is going to BE A NEW YORK TIMES
- 9:53BESTSELLER. I really do. I think we
- 9:55wrote a good one. I think you should get
- 9:57a copy today. All right, back to the
- 10:00episode. Proverbs 13:1. Proverbs 13:11.
- 10:04Dishonest money dwindles away. But
- 10:07whoever gathers money little by little
- 10:10makes it GROW LITTLE BY LITTLE. LITTLE
- 10:13BY LITTLE. HOW DO YOU BECOME WEALTHY?
- 10:14Little by little. Dishonest money
- 10:16dwindles away. You know, it's funny. I I
- 10:19had a friend back in Boston who was a
- 10:22drug dealer for years. And I was like,
- 10:24"Did you like get wealthy?" HE WAS LIKE,
- 10:26"DUDE, NO, I NEVER made a lot of money."
- 10:30He's just like like dishonest money just
- 10:33dwindles away. He's like it it's it's we
- 10:37act like that's it's good money, but
- 10:39it's not. And let me tell you, get rich
- 10:42quick schemes will take all your money.
- 10:46You're essentially just playing the
- 10:47lottery. It's poverty mentality. Little
- 10:49by little, little by little, little by
- 10:51little, okay? But whoever gathers money
- 10:54little by little makes it grow. Okay?
- 10:57Slow and steady wins the race. Okay?
- 10:59Proverbs 13 verse 20. Number four.
- 11:03Proverbs 13 verse20 says this. Walk with
- 11:06the WISE AND BECOME WISE. WALK WITH THE
- 11:09wise and become wise. You want to know
- 11:11how you're going to become wise? Find a
- 11:14wise person and get around them. That's
- 11:16how you get wise. Find wise people. Walk
- 11:21with the wise and become wise. Okay.
- 11:23Somebody asked me one time, "Why did you
- 11:25move all the way to Dallas, Texas from
- 11:27North Carolina?" I said to walk with
- 11:29Pastor Robert Moo to be w like I saw him
- 11:33as someone who was wise and the Bible
- 11:35says that wisdom is worth selling
- 11:38everything you've got. So I sold my
- 11:39house in North Carolina. I moved halfway
- 11:41across the country. I I invested
- 11:44resources to be around someone that I
- 11:47thought was a wealth of wisdom, a well
- 11:52of knowledge. Okay. And I got no
- 11:55regrets. The garden feels a lot like
- 11:58social Dallas and my ministry style is
- 12:02reflected in the church that I came
- 12:04from. And so the three years that I
- 12:06spent with Pastor Robert and Pastor
- 12:08Taylor at social invaluable. But I
- 12:11decided not just to fly in a couple
- 12:14times a year to preach, not just to show
- 12:17up at the conference. No, no, no. To
- 12:18walk with the wise. To walk with the
- 12:20wise. To get to his house at 5:00 in the
- 12:23morning and go to Barry's boot camp. Oh
- 12:25god, I hate Barry's boot camp. But
- 12:28that's what it means to walk with the
- 12:29wise. It means that you put yourself in
- 12:32proximity to leaders. Now, we have this
- 12:35twisted. We think that wise people are
- 12:38going to come find us and come disciple
- 12:39us. So ridiculous. No. If you want
- 12:43wisdom, you go find a wise person and go
- 12:46walk with them. No one who's wise is
- 12:49thinking about you. Nobody. They got
- 12:52stuff to do. They're busy. They're busy
- 12:54leading and they're busy flourishing and
- 12:57they're busy parenting and they're busy.
- 12:59Okay. So, Pastor Robert wasn't going to
- 13:01come find me, discover me, mentor me.
- 13:06No, I needed to go be around him. It
- 13:09doesn't say the wise will come walk with
- 13:11you so that you can become wise. No, it
- 13:13says walk with the wise and become wise.
- 13:16And we got a whole generation that just
- 13:18complains. Nobody's discipling me.
- 13:21Nobody. Nobody. Nobody. Okay, cool. You
- 13:25know, even on our launch team right now,
- 13:26I had a couple of the guys, they're
- 13:28like, "Hey, you know, I just would love
- 13:30to spend some time with you." And I'm
- 13:31like, "Hey, you do know that there's a 5
- 13:34a.m. prayer that happens every Tuesday
- 13:37and every Thursday, right? 5:00 in the
- 13:39morning. Every Tuesday. Every Thursday
- 13:42on Zoom, I'm there." So, SO HOW YOU
- 13:45MISSING THE 5:00 A.M. PRAYER than asking
- 13:46me to do coffee? No. No. No. No. No. No.
- 13:49No. No. No. I'm not here to to
- 13:52accommodate you. You want You want
- 13:54wisdom, come be in my world. You want
- 13:57wisdom, come get around me. I'm not the
- 13:59one with something to lose here. You're
- 14:01the one with something to lose here. So,
- 14:03I'm not going to chase you to give you
- 14:06wisdom. If you want wisdom, you better
- 14:09wake your happy hips up at 4:45 in the
- 14:11morning and jump on that Zoom call at
- 14:135:00 a.m. because you can't complain
- 14:15about the wisdom you don't got when wise
- 14:18people are giving you an opportunity to
- 14:20be around, but it's at an inconvenient
- 14:23time. Also, in my entire ministry
- 14:26career, I always make things at 5:00 in
- 14:29the morning to make it inconvenient on
- 14:31purpose because it's a test. Cuz
- 14:33everything's a test. When I first met
- 14:35Jesse Summers, he asked if I could
- 14:37mentor him, and I said, "Yep, sure.
- 14:39Starbucks 6 a.m." And I told the people,
- 14:44"Starbucks 6 a.m." That was back when I
- 14:46was still drinking Starbucks. I know.
- 14:47I've repented from my sins. I I I saw
- 14:49the light. No more Starbucks. We don't
- 14:50do Starbucks no more. But back 10 years
- 14:53ago, I was doing Starbucks. Starbucks 6
- 14:54a.m. And you wouldn't believe the amount
- 14:57of guys I told that to who never showed
- 14:58up to Starbucks at 6:00 a.m. But I said
- 15:00it to Jesse, and guess what he did? He
- 15:02showed up to Starbucks at 6:00 a.m.
- 15:04because he understood that if I walk
- 15:06with the wise, I'll become wise. And
- 15:08I've watched that man become wise. Why?
- 15:11Because he decided to sacrifice
- 15:14to put skin in the game to wake himself
- 15:17up and to walk with the wise. No leader
- 15:21is going to put stuff on the bottom
- 15:22shelf for you. Nobody. Great leaders
- 15:26that have something to offer is going to
- 15:27put it up on the top shelf. All the way
- 15:30up on the top shelf. If I wanted time
- 15:32with Pastor Robert, I knew, hey, if I
- 15:35get to his house by 4:30, I could jump
- 15:38in his car while he drives TO BARRY'S
- 15:40BOOT CAMP. And I hated Barry's. And I
- 15:42hated waking up that early. But guess
- 15:44what? If I'm going to walk with the
- 15:46wise, and that means I'm going to cold
- 15:47plunge. That means I'm going to get in
- 15:49the sun, and that means I'm GOING TO DO
- 15:50A BUNCH OF STUFF I DON'T REALLY WANT TO
- 15:51DO. But no great leader makes their
- 15:55pearls accessible. You don't put pearls
- 15:57on the bottom shelf. And wisdom is never
- 15:59going to go on sale. So, you got to ask
- 16:01the question, am I doing what's actually
- 16:04required to gain wisdom from somebody?
- 16:07All right. Golly,
- 16:10we're only AT FOUR. NUMBER FIVE,
- 16:12PROVERBS 13:4. Whoever spares the rod
- 16:15hates their children, but the one who
- 16:18loves their children is careful to
- 16:20discipline them. All right? Uh, this
- 16:22verse gets taken out of context a lot.
- 16:24Okay? Sparing the rod doesn't mean that
- 16:26I don't physically spank my children.
- 16:30Okay? I I actually think that a lot of
- 16:32pastors get into trouble by advising
- 16:35people or not advising people to
- 16:38discipline their children with with
- 16:40physical, you know, with with a pop or
- 16:42or wooden spoon or whatever. I actually
- 16:45think the heart of the verse has nothing
- 16:46to do with whether or not physical
- 16:48discipline is is godly or not godly. I
- 16:52think that's a personal call. You make
- 16:53that judgment for yourself. I don't
- 16:55think it's any pastor's business to tell
- 16:56you how to, you know, discipline your
- 16:58child. But I will say this, there's a
- 17:00difference between punishment and
- 17:01discipline. Punishment and discipline.
- 17:04And when there is sufficient discipline,
- 17:07you don't need punishment. What is
- 17:09punishment? Punishment is what happens
- 17:12after someone lacks discipline.
- 17:14Discipline is what happens to prevent
- 17:16punishment from ever needing to take
- 17:18place. So, basketball practice,
- 17:22soccer practice is where discipline
- 17:25happened. Did that happen after the game
- 17:27or before the game? Before the game. We
- 17:30always had practice before the game to
- 17:33get in shape for the game. Okay. The
- 17:36discipline happens before the game to
- 17:38get in shape for the game. Now, there
- 17:40are a couple of games where we lost so
- 17:42bad. We were so undisiplined that our
- 17:45coach took us right back to our gym at
- 17:499:00 at night, 10:00 at night and made
- 17:51us run laps, made us run lines. That's
- 17:54punishment. Okay? Or somebody was
- 17:57disrespectful or somebody wasn't dressed
- 17:59appropriately and we had to do laps.
- 18:01That was punishment. that happens after
- 18:04the game when you drop the ball because
- 18:06you failed to be disciplined before the
- 18:09game in preparation for the game. And a
- 18:11lot of times we think that God is in the
- 18:13punishment business, but God's not in
- 18:15the punishment business. He's really in
- 18:17the discipline business. He wants to
- 18:19discipline you with fasting, discipline
- 18:22you with prayer, discipline you with
- 18:24reading the word. He wants to discipline
- 18:26you so that you don't actually fail in
- 18:29moments of trial, testing, or
- 18:31temptation. Okay. So that there doesn't
- 18:34need to be punishment. So I actually
- 18:37think that the heart of God, the heart
- 18:39of this verse, the heart of a parent
- 18:42should be I want to discipline my child
- 18:45so that there aren't scenarios where I
- 18:47need to punish them. And discipline is
- 18:50not just about physically spanking them.
- 18:53Discipline is about training them,
- 18:55teaching them, correcting them, offering
- 18:58wisdom to them, guiding them, and
- 19:02depositing in them. And not just about,
- 19:06you know, you know, my dentist always
- 19:07tells me, the more preventative care we
- 19:09do, the more we don't have to, you know,
- 19:13do stuff to rescue your teeth once
- 19:16they're jacked, but we can actually
- 19:17prevent your teeth from even getting
- 19:19cavities in the first place. Oh gosh, we
- 19:21only made it to five. All right, rapid
- 19:24fire. I'll do the last five.
- 19:25Proverbsapter 14:23 uh says this, "All
- 19:29hard work brings a profit, but mere talk
- 19:33leads only to poverty." What's that
- 19:35mean? TALK IS CHEAP, BRO. STOP TALKING.
- 19:37Get to work. Okay. Proverbs 14:23. All
- 19:41hard work brings profit, but mere talk
- 19:44leads only to poverty. STOP TALKING
- 19:46ABOUT that idea. Start doing something.
- 19:48This is a waste of time talking about
- 19:50stuff. You ain't got no plans on doing
- 19:52nothing. Stop talking. Just stop it.
- 19:54Stop it. Actually, scientists have found
- 19:57out that the more you talk about your
- 19:58goals, it actually when you talk about
- 20:01your goals with other people, it
- 20:02releases a chemical in your brain where
- 20:04you start to feel a reward from just
- 20:06talking about it. And the reality is
- 20:08that the less you talk about it and just
- 20:10be about it. Let people see the fruit of
- 20:13your labor. Don't talk about your goals.
- 20:15I'm going to get in shape. Yo, watch,
- 20:16man. I'm going to get in shape. Be
- 20:18quiet. Go get to the gym. STOP ALL THAT
- 20:20TALKING. ALL THAT YAPPING. YOU COULD BE
- 20:23AT THE GYM. YOU could be you you could
- 20:25be bench pressing. Instead of yapping,
- 20:27go throw some weights. Go go go be about
- 20:31it. Don't talk about it. Be about it.
- 20:34All right. Proverbs 14:31. Rapid fire.
- 20:37Rapid fire. Rapid fire. Whoever
- 20:38oppresses the poor shows contempt for
- 20:40their maker, but whoever is kind to the
- 20:44needy honors God. Self-explanatory. God
- 20:46cares for the poor. God cares about how
- 20:49we treat the poor. God says that if we
- 20:51oppress the poor, we show contempt for
- 20:53their maker. So God identifies with the
- 20:56poor. Says, "No, no, I'm their maker.
- 20:58I'm their God." Okay? And whoever is
- 21:00kind of the poor honors me. So we want
- 21:03to make sure that we we honor the poor,
- 21:06that we care for the poor, that we don't
- 21:07oppress them. That's a good verse, man.
- 21:09Because obviously Proverbs is going to
- 21:11be, you know, Proverbs is all about you
- 21:13being wealthy. But in your pursuit of
- 21:16wealth, please don't oppress the poor
- 21:19and dishonor the poor cuz that would be
- 21:21actually creating a curse for your own
- 21:23life. You'd be showing contempt for God
- 21:25and not honoring the Lord. Okay, rapid
- 21:28fire, rapid fire, rapid fire. Proverbs
- 21:30chapter 15:16, uh, says this, "Better a
- 21:33little with the fear of the Lord than
- 21:35great wealth with turmoil." Oh, there's
- 21:38a lot of you right now. It'd be better
- 21:40for you to have less money. First of
- 21:42all, you're in debt. You've
- 21:44overextended. You know what I'm saying?
- 21:45Your overhead's too too, you know, too
- 21:48big. It it'd be better. It'd be better.
- 21:51Okay? Cuz real blessing comes with uh
- 21:55not not there's a difference between
- 21:56hard work and turmoil. If it's causing
- 21:59turmoil, then it's not from God. Okay?
- 22:02The rapid fire rapid fire 1522
- 22:06says this plans fail for lack of counsel
- 22:08but with many adviserss they succeed. I
- 22:12am a collaborative leader which means
- 22:14I'm a collaborative decision maker. I
- 22:16like to get a a multitude of counsel. I
- 22:19ask about a dozen people about
- 22:21everything before I really make
- 22:22decisions. And there are some people who
- 22:24just like trust their gut and they just,
- 22:26you know, and I I'm just not that kind
- 22:28of a leader. I I don't think that I
- 22:31don't think that's a good way to lead. I
- 22:33think that there is with many advisers,
- 22:36you know, plans actually succeed. So,
- 22:38before we signed a contract for the
- 22:39House of Blues, I called Pastor Robert.
- 22:41Man, I called I I I called Pastor Matt
- 22:44back in Boston, my home church. I I
- 22:47asked my wife. I asked our team. I I
- 22:50asked the Lord. I you know, I safety and
- 22:53a multitude of counsel. Okay. I'm
- 22:55shocked as to how many people just make
- 22:57decisions by themselves and then they
- 23:00only come to their pastor once things go
- 23:01left and and it's a dumpster fire. But
- 23:04it's like your pastor could have saved
- 23:06you from that being a dumpster fire. I'm
- 23:08shocked as to how many people just show
- 23:09up like hey this is who I'm dating. It's
- 23:12like you didn't want to get advice
- 23:13before you like locked it in with that
- 23:15person or they show UP LIKE I PROPOSED
- 23:17and I'm like oh fantastic. Maybe if you
- 23:20had asked some wise people what they
- 23:21thought, we could have saved you from
- 23:23proposing cuz this person isn't a good
- 23:25person to marry. But hey, man, do you.
- 23:27Sounds good. Last one. Okay. 15 27. It
- 23:31says this, "The greedy bring ruin to
- 23:33their households, but the one who hates
- 23:35bribes will live." Again, the issue is
- 23:37not wealth, but it is greed. In Proverbs
- 23:40is going to go after greed. All right.
- 23:41What's our topless truth for the day?
- 23:43Our timeless truth comes out of Proverbs
- 23:44chapter 15:8. says this, "The Lord
- 23:47detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but
- 23:49the prayer of the upright pleases him."
- 23:51I wrote in my notes, "Legalism where?"
- 23:53Everybody says, "The Old Testament is
- 23:55legalistic." Where? Legalism where?
- 23:58Proverbs 15:8
- 24:00says, "The Lord detest the sacrifice of
- 24:02the wicked." Legalism would mean, "Well,
- 24:04I could do wrong and as long as I offer
- 24:07a lamb or a goat or a bull on the altar
- 24:10sacrifice, it'll atone for my sins." And
- 24:13even God in the Old Testament is smarter
- 24:15than that. He's like, "Nah, I detest the
- 24:18sacrifice of the wicked because I'm
- 24:20after your heart." So legalism where
- 24:23this idea that the Old Testament is
- 24:25legalistic is wild. That's crazy. That's
- 24:27not a biblically accurate statement.
- 24:30Says the Lord detests the sacrifice of
- 24:33the wicked, but the prayer of the
- 24:36upright pleases him. Okay? that you
- 24:39could actually do less than the person
- 24:41who's offering a sacrifice because a
- 24:43sacrifice costs money. A prayer costs
- 24:44nothing. But as long as your heart
- 24:46postures in the right place, then you've
- 24:49done more in terms of your relationship
- 24:50with the Lord than by offering a
- 24:52sacrifice. So God's not very legalistic.
- 24:55God knows how to judge the thoughts and
- 24:57the attitudes of the heart. And that's
- 24:59not just true for the proverbs or the
- 25:01author of that proverb. That is true for
- 25:03me. That is true for you. That's a
- 25:05timeless truth. And all of the proverbs
- 25:07that I shared are actually timeless
- 25:09truths. And I love the book of Proverbs.
- 25:12I I'm Woo. I wish the whole Bible was
- 25:15this simple. Anyway, all right. Tomorrow
- 25:17we got day 307. We actually got through
- 25:20all 10 of those. I can't believe we did
- 25:21it. We did the last five kind of rapid
- 25:23fire, but I like it. Okay, day 307.
- 25:26Tomorrow we got Proverbs chapter 16 to
- 25:2918. Cannot wait to dive into three more
- 25:33chapters of Proverbs with you. Same
- 25:36time, same place. I'll be here. The only
- 25:39question is, will you? If you're on a
- 25:41streak, I'm proud of you. I love you
- 25:43regardless of if you're on a streak or
- 25:44not. Love you. Love you. Love you. I'll
- 25:46see you tomorrow. Peace.
