- 0:24family. Welcome to day 304 here on the
- 0:27Bible department podcast. I'm your host
- 0:28Dr. Manny Rango and we are continuing
- 0:31our trek through the book of Proverbs.
- 0:33Today we've got Proverbs chapters 78 and
- 0:369. If you have not done the reading, how
- 0:40about you stop the video, pause the
- 0:42audio, GO DO THE READING. INCREDIBLE
- 0:45PROVERBS TODAY. Now you you could
- 0:47probably assume from the length of the
- 0:49episodes the past two days, you could
- 0:51tell I love a proverb. PROVERBS HATE TO
- 0:53SEE ME COMING. OKAY, I love proverbs cuz
- 0:56I love wisdom. Uh, and so my goal today
- 0:59is to make sure that THE EPISODE IS NOT
- 1:00as long as they have been in the past.
- 1:02We've got 10 days in Proverbs. Today is
- 1:06the third day of 10 days of us camping
- 1:09out and getting wisdom. All right. So,
- 1:12I'm going to give you some big picture
- 1:14context clues. Then I'll give you as
- 1:16many nerdy nuggets as I can. And then
- 1:18I'll obviously leave you off with the
- 1:19time of the streets. Okay. So, the big
- 1:21context clue is that we're coming to the
- 1:24end of an entire movement or section.
- 1:26So, Proverbs chapters 1-9
- 1:29really focus on like uh word pictures.
- 1:33And the big word pictures or imagery
- 1:36that chapters 1-9 are supposed to leave
- 1:38us with is lady wisdom and lady folly.
- 1:41Okay? Lady wisdom, lady folly. They both
- 1:43are trying to seduce you. They're both
- 1:46trying to win your heart. They're both
- 1:48trying to get you to fall in love with
- 1:49them. Okay? and Proverbs chapters 1-9
- 1:52are trying to get you to bind your heart
- 1:56to wisdom to fall in love with lady
- 1:59wisdom. Okay, so wisdom and folly are
- 2:02both going to be personified as women
- 2:05because this is a dad trying to give
- 2:07advice to his son and he's essentially
- 2:09saying you're going to fall in love with
- 2:10with somebody and uh you're going to
- 2:13love a woman somewhere. I want you to
- 2:16reject folly. I want you to love wisdom,
- 2:19which is going to mean that all of your
- 2:22romantic relationships from that point
- 2:24on are all going to be wise because
- 2:26you've fallen in love with wisdom before
- 2:28you fall in love with anybody. Um, so
- 2:31once we get to chapter 10, the tone of
- 2:34Proverbs is going to completely shift.
- 2:36Okay, the first nine chapters are
- 2:38different from the rest of the book.
- 2:40They are designed as educational poems,
- 2:42parents instructing their children on
- 2:44how to live wisely. These are the wisdom
- 2:46traditions that are passed down from
- 2:48generation to generation. They are of
- 2:50course longer than the short apherisms
- 2:54that Proverbs is most famous for. Okay?
- 2:57So once you get to chapter 10, it's just
- 2:59going to be oneliner after oneliner
- 3:00after oneliner. These kind of fit
- 3:03together as poems like as a whole. Okay?
- 3:06The the chapters kind of flow together.
- 3:08You can see themes. Okay. Uh so uh the
- 3:13the book of Proverbs is going to shift.
- 3:15Just want you to know. Um I'll actually
- 3:17kind of give you an outline of the book
- 3:19that will probably be really really
- 3:20helpful. Uh Proverbs chapter 1-9 are
- 3:23nine wisdom poems attributed to Solomon.
- 3:26These are thought to be written by him
- 3:28during his reign. They take the form of
- 3:30a parent instructing a child and focus
- 3:32on the choice between wisdom and folly.
- 3:35Okay. Proverbs chapters 10 to chapter
- 3:3822:1 16 are sentence sentence sayings
- 3:43attributed to Solomon. They are
- 3:45aferisms. Okay, apherisms associated
- 3:48with Solomon thought to be written by
- 3:50him. [snorts] These are the more
- 3:51traditional wisdom material. Okay, made
- 3:54up of short memorable sentence sayings.
- 3:57Proverbs chapters 22:1 17 to 24:22
- 4:02are the words of the wise. Another
- 4:04collection of apherisms, but these are
- 4:07on the face of it anonymous. Though, as
- 4:10will be discussed when we get there,
- 4:12they seem incredibly similar to an
- 4:14Egyptian work of the 12th century BC
- 4:17named the wisdom of Ammon, Aman mope.
- 4:22Chapters 24 23-34,
- 4:25another anonymous collection of
- 4:27apherisms. And then Proverbs chapters
- 4:2925-29, more sentence sayings of Solomon.
- 4:33Uh these are another collection of
- 4:35apherisms associated with Solomon but
- 4:38not included in his earlier collection
- 4:40rather they were collected during the
- 4:42reign of Hezekiah in the 8th century uh
- 4:46or early 7th century BC. And then you
- 4:49got Proverbs chapter 30 which are going
- 4:52to contain the sayings of a man by the
- 4:54name of Agur Agur.
- 4:57These are the collected apherisms of an
- 4:59unknown wise man named Agger the son of
- 5:03Jac. And then Proverbs 31 which we know
- 5:06as the proverbs the the a wife of noble
- 5:11character. Okay. These are the sayings
- 5:13of the mom of King Lemuuel. the
- 5:17affirmisms
- 5:18in acrossic poem written by a gentile
- 5:21king named Lemuuel based on the sayings
- 5:24of his mother. Who these were like who
- 5:27they are and where and when they were
- 5:29written is completely unknown. We have
- 5:31no information about Lemuuel or his
- 5:34mama. So that's a breakdown of just the
- 5:36book. Okay. And that's enough context
- 5:39for us to get into today's content. All
- 5:42right. Six dirty nuggets that I got for
- 5:44you for today. Okay. The first is
- 5:46actually something I was supposed to say
- 5:47yesterday. I didn't get to cuz I was
- 5:49rambling about, you know, prostitutes
- 5:52costs a loaf of bread and don't mess
- 5:54with a married man's wife and blah blah
- 5:56blah blah blah. Okay, I want to go back
- 5:58to chapter 6. I know today we're focused
- 6:00on chapter 7-9, but I want to go back to
- 6:02chapter 6. Okay. Uh chapter 6 vers 1-
- 6:0711. Okay. These are good. This is good
- 6:09stuff right here. This is chapter 6 1.
- 6:13My son. Okay, my son. If you have put up
- 6:16security for your neighbor, if you have
- 6:19shaken hands and pledge for a stranger.
- 6:21Okay. Hey, that's unwise. That sounds
- 6:23unwise. You have been trapped by what
- 6:25you said, ins snared by the words of
- 6:28your mouth. So essentially, this dad is
- 6:30saying you got to be careful who you go
- 6:31into business with. You got to be
- 6:33careful about how you manage your
- 6:36financial dealings, how you do business.
- 6:39Okay? because now you're ins snared by
- 6:41the words of your mouth, by the
- 6:42contract, by the pledge. So do this, my
- 6:45son, to free yourself since you have
- 6:47fallen into your neighbor's hands. Go to
- 6:49the point of exhaustion.
- 6:52If you ask me right now, do I think most
- 6:54people do anything to the point of
- 6:55exhaustion? I would say no. They they
- 6:58don't. Um there's actually been moments
- 7:00where I have fallen asleep in this
- 7:02chair. Cam, who's filming with me, can
- 7:04attest. There are moments where I will,
- 7:07in order to produce 365 episodes of a
- 7:10podcast, you have to push yourself to
- 7:12exhaustion. There are moments where I
- 7:14I've recorded sick. I've recorded coming
- 7:17straight off the road. We'll land at the
- 7:19airport, come straight to the studio to
- 7:21record content to the point of
- 7:23exhaustion. And there was one time where
- 7:26I was sitting in this chair at this
- 7:28table with all my books and I just kind
- 7:30of like like literally leaned back and
- 7:34was just like like snoring and Cam came
- 7:36and like woke me up and was like, "Yo,
- 7:38PM, I'mma take you home, man. Like I I
- 7:41got I come on, man. Like this is elderly
- 7:43abuse, bro. I just feel like I I'mma be
- 7:46judged by God like if I keep you in the
- 7:48studio." You know what I'm saying? To
- 7:49the point of exhaustion. And And here we
- 7:52go. Let's keep reading. Okay. to the
- 7:53point of exhaustion. Most people haven't
- 7:56even seen exhaustion. They they never
- 7:58even met exhaustion. Them and exhaustion
- 8:00are are not friends. Okay? And give your
- 8:04neighbor no rest. Okay? Allow no sleep
- 8:07to your eyes, no slumber to your
- 8:10eyelids. Free yourself like a gazelle
- 8:13from the hand of the hunter, like a bird
- 8:16from the snare of the fowler. Go to the
- 8:18ant, you slugard. Okay? consider its
- 8:21ways and be wise. Be wise. It has no
- 8:26commander, no overseer, no ruler. My
- 8:30biggest pet peeve like with I don't know
- 8:33people right now is like if your boss
- 8:35doesn't tell you to do it, you don't do
- 8:36it. What do you ants don't even need a
- 8:39boss? You tell me you need a boss. You
- 8:41need somebody to like like whip you into
- 8:44shape. Like that's crazy. Like there's
- 8:46got to be a motivation that's in you
- 8:49that makes you want to succeed, that
- 8:51makes you want to win. You got to be
- 8:53self motivated. Okay? It has no
- 8:55commander. It has no overseer. It has no
- 8:56ruler. Yet, it stores its provisions in
- 8:59summer and gathers its food at harvest.
- 9:01How long will you lie there, you
- 9:03slugard? When will you get up from your
- 9:06sleep? Here we go. I've committed this
- 9:08to memory. A little sleep, a little
- 9:10slumber, a little folding of the hands
- 9:12to rest, and poverty will come on you
- 9:15like a thief and scarcity like an armed
- 9:18man. Proverbs is going to I know this is
- 9:20offensive to our current secular
- 9:24worldview, but proverbs is going to say,
- 9:26"Yeah,
- 9:28poverty,
- 9:29one one of the factors, not the sole
- 9:33factor, one of the factors for poverty
- 9:36is laziness." that if if people are
- 9:40lazy, they will be poor. Now, I'm not
- 9:43saying all poor people are lazy. I don't
- 9:46don't twist my words. Don't don't don't
- 9:48get in the comments and fight, okay? I'm
- 9:49not saying all poor people are lazy. All
- 9:51I'm saying is that we cannot
- 9:54overcorrect. We can't say because all
- 9:56poor people are not lazy, then that
- 9:58means that no poor people are lazy.
- 10:00Well, that's just ridiculous. Proverbs
- 10:02saying, "Hey, there are some people who
- 10:05are poor because of sleep. They like
- 10:08sleep. They like they folding of the
- 10:10hands and and poverty will come on you
- 10:13like an armed man." And it is the job of
- 10:16a good dad to make his children scared
- 10:18of poverty 100%. So if Proverbs is a
- 10:23father's heart, a father's perspectives
- 10:25to his children, it is the job of a good
- 10:27dad to to make his children very very
- 10:30very aware. That's why it's very very
- 10:32dangerous to spoil children, okay?
- 10:35Because they have to be they have to
- 10:37love hard work. They have to enjoy hard
- 10:39work, okay? I enjoy what I do. This is
- 10:42my dream job. The reason I would fall
- 10:44asleep in this chair is cuz I love what
- 10:47I do. And so there are some people, it's
- 10:49not that you're lazy, it's that you're
- 10:51not living in purpose. And at some point
- 10:53maybe just maybe you're going to have to
- 10:55like make some sacrifices and unsecure
- 10:58the bag so that you can actually operate
- 11:01according to your purpose so that you
- 11:03can wake up with a sense of I love my
- 11:06job. You your your work does say
- 11:09something about your identity and God
- 11:12has a purpose for your life. And if
- 11:14you're just if you feel like your your
- 11:16job is a waste of your gifts and talents
- 11:20then it's going to be really hard to get
- 11:21you motivated. You are going to need a
- 11:22commander. You are going to need an
- 11:25overseer. You are going to need a ruler.
- 11:27But I've tried my best to hire people
- 11:30who I don't really need to oversee or
- 11:33rule or be a commander for them cuz
- 11:35they're self motivated. But I can only
- 11:38hire people for their purpose. The
- 11:40moment I try to hire somebody and get
- 11:42them to do something that they're not
- 11:44really designed and put on this planet
- 11:46to do, I'm going to have to constantly
- 11:49get them to like focus on the job. Okay.
- 11:52All right. Chapter 7:2. I want you to
- 11:54see this cuz it's going to be all
- 11:56through the book of Proverbs. Wisdom
- 11:57guards. Wisdom protects. Okay. When you
- 12:00adopt wisdom into your life, it protects
- 12:02you. It's like it it it secures you.
- 12:05Okay. Number three, third nerdy nugget.
- 12:07Okay. Chapter 7:7. It says this, I saw
- 12:11among the simple. I noticed among young
- 12:14men a youth who had no sense. Okay, so
- 12:16who is the book of Proverbs for? It's
- 12:18for young people. It's for youth. It's
- 12:20for children. Now, everything that we
- 12:22know about the knowledge of good and
- 12:24evil actually makes it so that the
- 12:27knowledge of good and evil is a good
- 12:29thing. Okay? There's only two groups of
- 12:30people who don't have the knowledge of
- 12:32good and evil. And you'll see why this
- 12:34connected to children in just a second.
- 12:36There's only two groups of people that
- 12:37don't have the knowledge of good and
- 12:38evil. Well, the first is pretty clear.
- 12:40It's sociopaths. Okay? If you if you
- 12:42don't know the difference between mowing
- 12:43the lawn and hacking somebody's limbs
- 12:45off and putting them in a deep freezer,
- 12:47you're crazy. Okay? Which means you
- 12:49don't have the knowledge of good and
- 12:51evil. You don't have the ability to
- 12:52discern the difference between what's
- 12:54good and what's evil. You're that's a
- 12:56sociopath. That's a psychopath. Okay?
- 12:58That's a serial killer. That person's
- 12:59nuts. The second group that doesn't know
- 13:01the difference between good and evil are
- 13:03children. So when the Bible says, "I saw
- 13:06among the simple," that doesn't mean
- 13:08like like people who aren't intelligent.
- 13:10That means people who are innocent. I
- 13:12saw among the innocent. Okay? My son
- 13:14right now, you know, literally last week
- 13:18pulled his penis out of the ice cream
- 13:19shop. I'm not joking. Just pulled his
- 13:21pants down, whipped it out. I WAS LIKE,
- 13:22"WHOA, HEY, BROTHER. WHOA, WHOA, WHOA,
- 13:25WHOA, WHOA, WHOA." I was like, "Hey,
- 13:26hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. You got to
- 13:28keep your underwear on, bro. Like, you
- 13:30got to keep your shorts on. Like you
- 13:32can't you can't we can't do this not at
- 13:35not at Somi Somi, bro. Not at the ice
- 13:37cream shop. Not where we get Earl Grey
- 13:39ice cream. You can't do that in here.
- 13:41Well, why would he do that? He would do
- 13:43that because he doesn't have the
- 13:44knowledge of good and evil. Okay, so
- 13:46when the Bible says that Adam and Eve
- 13:47are naked and unashamed, actually what
- 13:50the Bible is saying is that they've not
- 13:52yet taken of the knowledge of good and
- 13:55evil. And what happens when they do? The
- 13:57moment they take of the tree of the
- 13:58knowledge of good and evil, they go from
- 13:59a childlike state, from an innocent
- 14:01state, from a simple state to
- 14:04understanding shame and understanding
- 14:07that they are naked and that it's a
- 14:09problem. Okay? So, the Bible's actually
- 14:12telling us they go instantly from
- 14:15childlike innocence to adult
- 14:18understanding by taking the knowledge of
- 14:21good and evil. which means that the
- 14:24knowledge of good and evil in and of
- 14:25itself is not bad. However, when taken,
- 14:29it is bad. But when God thinks you're
- 14:33ready for it, he would want to give it
- 14:35to you. So, there's a difference between
- 14:37taking knowledge and receiving
- 14:40knowledge. And actually, I would say
- 14:42that the whole what we have in the
- 14:44Garden of Eden is a test to see whether
- 14:46or not Adam and Eve will trust God for
- 14:50his timing on when he thinks it's
- 14:53appropriate to give them the knowledge
- 14:55of good and evil. So, the knowledge of
- 14:57good and evil is not an inherently bad
- 14:59thing. How they went about getting that
- 15:01knowledge is the problem. So when
- 15:05Proverbs opens up and says, "Hey, our
- 15:08job is to give you the knowledge of good
- 15:10and evil, is to help the simple, to help
- 15:13youth, to help the young." It's us
- 15:15saying, it's it's Proverbs saying, "I
- 15:18want to bring you back into the Garden
- 15:20of Eden so that you can go from being
- 15:23innocent to being wise without sinning
- 15:28against the Lord." There are two ways to
- 15:30get wisdom. The first is experience. You
- 15:33know, there are guys, there are a
- 15:34plethora of guys on the team who are
- 15:36divorced and guess what? They have a
- 15:39bunch of knowledge around marriage, but
- 15:41it was through a very painful
- 15:43experience. The other way to get
- 15:45knowledge is through wisdom, which is
- 15:48not experience. It's saying, you know
- 15:51what, the fear of the Lord is the
- 15:52beginning of wisdom. Okay, how does the
- 15:53fear of the Lord work? It's not just me
- 15:55being in awe of God and me getting
- 15:57humility. It's also me being able to
- 16:00know what's going to happen if I sin. So
- 16:04think about the fear of the Lord. When
- 16:06Adam and Eve eat of the tree of the
- 16:07knowledge of good and evil, they feel
- 16:09fear and they hide from God. What
- 16:11happens when you have the fear of the
- 16:13Lord is you essentially say, "Mm, I can
- 16:16see around the corner. If I eat of that
- 16:19fruit, I am going to be afraid of God
- 16:21and I'm going to hide from him.
- 16:23Therefore, I'm going to take the fear
- 16:26that I will experience in the future and
- 16:28apply it to my life right now so that I
- 16:30have some restraint. And so, anyone who
- 16:33doesn't have fear is crazy. My dad has
- 16:37struggled with a drug addiction cuz he's
- 16:39not scared of anything. And if you ask
- 16:41me, I would say I'm very, very scared.
- 16:43I'm scared of losing my ministry. I'm
- 16:45scared of losing my marriage. I'm scared
- 16:47of drugs. I'm scared. I have the fear of
- 16:50the Lord, which isn't just being scared
- 16:52of God, but it's being afraid in the way
- 16:55that the Lord is afraid, which means the
- 16:57Lord knows the future. And wisdom says,
- 17:00I don't need to experience divorce to
- 17:03get the knowledge of what that does. I
- 17:05could talk, I could get wisdom, and it
- 17:08will make me afraid of divorce so that I
- 17:11never have to go through divorce. Okay?
- 17:13I'm gonna operate today with the kind of
- 17:16wisdom that helps me to navigate
- 17:18tomorrow. Okay. I want the future Manny
- 17:21Orango to be happy with what present
- 17:23Manny Orango is deciding to do today.
- 17:26Okay. So that I want to give language
- 17:28around simple youth young children. Son,
- 17:32why is this language so prevalent in the
- 17:34book of Proverbs? is prevalent because
- 17:37Adam and Eve had a test of whether or
- 17:39not they were going to take the
- 17:40knowledge of good and evil or wait to
- 17:42receive the knowledge of good and evil.
- 17:44And wisdom literature, not just
- 17:46Proverbs, but wisdom literature
- 17:48throughout the Bible is trying to offer
- 17:50the knowledge of good and evil to people
- 17:53who are not trying to just take it, but
- 17:55who are ready to receive it. All right,
- 17:57family. The wait is over. My brand new
- 18:00book, Crushing Chaos, is out now and
- 18:04available everywhere books are sold
- 18:07literally today. I walked into a Barnes
- 18:10& Noble and I signed a bunch of copies
- 18:12at a physical location. So, you can grab
- 18:15this book at a physical Barnes & Noble
- 18:18or you can go to a Books a Million or
- 18:20Amazon or anywhere books are sold and
- 18:23grab a copy. If you enjoy reading the
- 18:26Bible from an ancient perspective, if
- 18:29you understand that the beauty of
- 18:31scripture is actually [clears throat]
- 18:32knowing it in context, then you'll love
- 18:35this book. And if there's any chaos in
- 18:37your personal life, [music] I think that
- 18:39reading the Bible from an ancient
- 18:42perspective can actually help to crush
- 18:43the chaos in your life. I think this
- 18:46book is going to be a New York Times
- 18:47bestseller. I really do. I think we
- 18:49wrote a good one. I think you should get
- 18:51a copy today. All right, back to the
- 18:54episode. Chapter 9 7-9. Okay, chapter 9
- 18:597-9 has one of my favorite little
- 19:01lessons. It says this, "Whoever corrects
- 19:03a mocker invites insults. Whoever
- 19:05rebukes the wicked incurs abuse." So,
- 19:07this is saying, "Do not give dumb people
- 19:10advice." That's what this is saying. And
- 19:13then verse eight, do not rebuke markers
- 19:15or they will hate you. Rebuke the wise
- 19:18and they will love you. Okay? If you
- 19:20rebuke a wise person, they will love
- 19:23you. So, anyone who's easily offended,
- 19:25you're operating in foolishness. Anytime
- 19:28someone gives me correction, I'm really
- 19:30not easily offended. Why? Why am I
- 19:32easily offended? Because the fear of the
- 19:33Lord creates humility. And humility
- 19:35creates confidence. And if I'm truly
- 19:36confident, I have no insecurities. You
- 19:38can criticize. You can you can give me
- 19:40all the feedback you want. No, I have no
- 19:43qualms with with rebuke because I'm
- 19:45wise. Verse 9, instruct the wise and
- 19:48they will be wiser still. teach the
- 19:50righteous and they will add to their
- 19:52learning. A secular way or just a
- 19:55natural way to say this is this. A word
- 19:57to the wise is sufficient. Part of the
- 19:59way that I judge whether or not people
- 20:00are wise is do they accept wisdom? If I
- 20:03say something wise to a wise person, a
- 20:05wise person hears it and goes, "That's
- 20:06wise." If I say something wise to a
- 20:08foolish person, they're confused by it
- 20:10and then I stop talking. So Jesus says,
- 20:13"Do not cast your pearls to swine." I
- 20:15think there's a lot of us who have a
- 20:18gift of wisdom and your frustration is
- 20:20that you keep trying to give wisdom to
- 20:22people who are not ready to receive it
- 20:24and not God doesn't even give wisdom to
- 20:26people who aren't ready to receive it.
- 20:28But why do you think that you can just
- 20:30force wisdom down people's throats?
- 20:32There are people who are not ready to
- 20:34receive wisdom and that's okay. I'll say
- 20:36this, no one accepts advice when they're
- 20:39winning. Let life beat that person up
- 20:42enough to get them to a place of
- 20:43humility. And guess what'll happen?
- 20:45They'll come back to you and they'll
- 20:47want wisdom. People have to come face to
- 20:50face with rock bottom. They have to get
- 20:53to failure. And you want to know what
- 20:54failure does? Failure will humble you
- 20:57real good. It'll get you nice and ready
- 20:59for wisdom. And so there's lots of you,
- 21:01especially if you have like a discerning
- 21:02or prophetic spirit about you. You'll
- 21:05begin to discern that somebody needs
- 21:06your wisdom. But you should also discern
- 21:09they're not in a place to receive
- 21:10wisdom. And you got to get them to a
- 21:13place. love them to the place where they
- 21:15are ready to receive wisdom. There are
- 21:16all kinds of things that I want to tell
- 21:18my son, but he's four and so that's not
- 21:21age appropriate. In the same way that I
- 21:23love my son not for just where he's
- 21:25going to be, but for where he is.
- 21:27There's a lot of us, especially pastor
- 21:28and leaders, you can't just love people
- 21:30for the potential that they have. You
- 21:31got to love them for who they are right
- 21:33now. Okay? And and you got to love them
- 21:36into the person that they're going to
- 21:37be. And they might not be able to handle
- 21:39the wisdom that you have for them at the
- 21:40moment. Okay? Last nerdy nugget, chapter
- 21:438 22-31 is a creation poem. Okay, so we
- 21:47saw a lot of creation poems in the
- 21:49Psalms. Okay, in chapter 8:es 22-31
- 21:53gives us another creation poem. Okay, it
- 21:55actually says wisdom was the first of
- 21:58God's works. Okay, it says the Lord
- 22:00brought me forth as the first of his
- 22:02works before the deeds of old. I was
- 22:04formed long ago at the very beginning
- 22:06when the world came to be when there
- 22:09were no watery depths. We see the the
- 22:11the proverb is shining light on Genesis
- 22:14chapters 1, okay? And giving a creation
- 22:17poem. So we saw this with the Psalms and
- 22:19now we're seeing it here in Proverbs.
- 22:21And then you know what? I'll give you
- 22:22one last one there. The knowledge of the
- 22:25Holy One is something that is going to
- 22:27be talked about and I'm trying to find
- 22:30the exact verse where it was. Proverbs
- 22:34chapter 9 10 it says, "The fear of the
- 22:36Lord is the beginning of wisdom." We
- 22:38already know that part. But then
- 22:40Proverbs 9 adds to it says and knowledge
- 22:42of the holy one is understanding.
- 22:45Knowledge of the holy one is
- 22:48understanding. I would say this by by
- 22:50knowing God you know everything else.
- 22:53Okay. So knowledge of the holy one means
- 22:55that I know his character. I know his
- 22:58attributes. I know the character and the
- 23:00nature of God. Knowledge of the holy one
- 23:02means that I I'll say it this way. I
- 23:04don't look at the sun to study the sun.
- 23:07But by the light of the sun, I can see
- 23:10everything else. And I don't study God
- 23:12just to see God, but he he he lives in
- 23:15unapproachable light. And so when it
- 23:17says the knowledge of the holy one, what
- 23:19we're really saying is I I get to know
- 23:21God so that I can understand everything
- 23:22else. And uh if you ask me what do I
- 23:25think the most you know the most
- 23:27important thing to study is I'd say
- 23:29theology because no awtoer says this no
- 23:33person can rise above their idea of God
- 23:35and so really you may think you have a
- 23:38wisdom issue but you may actually have a
- 23:40I don't really know who God is issue and
- 23:43the moment you begin to really know who
- 23:45God is the moment you can apply that to
- 23:47your life and actually find wisdom.
- 23:48That's the last thing I'll leave us with
- 23:50and that gets us into our timeless
- 23:51truth. So, let's talk about lady wisdom,
- 23:53lady folly. Okay. The thing that the
- 23:57book of Proverbs is trying to get you to
- 23:58see is that lady folly only tells you
- 24:03how things are pleasurable in the short
- 24:05term. Lady wisdom is making you fight
- 24:08for delayed gratification. And so, the
- 24:11ultimate test of wisdom is going to be
- 24:14whether or not you make decisions for
- 24:16the short term or decisions for the long
- 24:18term. Making decisions for the future is
- 24:22going to be the ultimate test of wisdom.
- 24:24So I want to ask you a hard question. Do
- 24:26you have impulse control? Do you live
- 24:30with delayed gratification? Okay. If you
- 24:34struggle with impulse control and
- 24:36delayed gratification, it doesn't matter
- 24:38how many of these proverbs you read,
- 24:39it's not actually going to get down into
- 24:42the fruit of your life. Because the key
- 24:45that unlocks all of this is do I live
- 24:49for the for the moment or am I living
- 24:51for my future? Okay. Everything that
- 24:55folly brings to you is quick gain, quick
- 24:58riches. Okay. And people who want to get
- 25:01rich quick never get rich. Okay. You
- 25:04know when whenever when I first started
- 25:06investing, wise people in my life were
- 25:08like just plan on owning that house for
- 25:1030 years. If you own it for 30 years,
- 25:13you will make money. But if you want to
- 25:15flip it, if you want to like buy a house
- 25:17and like flip it in two years, you're
- 25:18gonna struggle. If you want to own
- 25:21stocks and keep them for 30 years,
- 25:24you're going to make money. But if you
- 25:25just want to like, you know, flip, you
- 25:28know, day trade, you're going to lose
- 25:29money. Okay? So, you got to be someone.
- 25:33If if you're just thinking about, you
- 25:35know, how oh god, how how how can I have
- 25:38sex right now? you're going to end up
- 25:40doing something. You're going to end up
- 25:41selling your birthright for a bowl of
- 25:43soup because you're allowing the the the
- 25:46need of the moment to drown out the
- 25:49long-term strategy. And so, the thing
- 25:53that unlocks your ability to really get
- 25:56the wisdom that God has for you is
- 25:59short-term versus long-term thinking,
- 26:01impulse control versus delayed
- 26:03gratification, and making decisions for
- 26:05the present versus making decisions for
- 26:06the future. And that is a timeless
- 26:09truth. You are going to have to control
- 26:12your impulses and rest in some delayed
- 26:16gratification. That is the thing that
- 26:18would make you go to college for 4
- 26:19years. That is what will make you do a
- 26:21master's program. That's what will make
- 26:22you get a doctorate. That's what would
- 26:24make you choose marriage. That is what
- 26:26would make you be okay with having a
- 26:29toddler because you're thinking about,
- 26:31hey, one day I'm going to marry this
- 26:33this boy off or marry this girl off. I'm
- 26:35living for them in my 20s and 30s. It's
- 26:38the thing that would make you want to
- 26:40save for retirement even when you're in
- 26:41your 20s and 30s. It's the thing
- 26:43long-term. The book of Proverbs is going
- 26:46to make you focus on what are you trying
- 26:49to accomplish with your whole life. And
- 26:51you've got to begin to control impulses
- 26:53and delay your gratification if we are
- 26:56going to see any of this wisdom actually
- 26:58take root in your life. That isn't just
- 27:01true for Solomon and his son, David and
- 27:03his son. That's true for you and I.
- 27:05THAT'S OUR TIMELESS TREAT. TOMORROW WE
- 27:07GOT DAY 305. WE'RE GOING TO be in
- 27:09Proverbs chapter 10 and 12. The tone of
- 27:12the Proverbs is going to change. Okay,
- 27:14we're at a hinge point. When we get out
- 27:15of chapter 9, once we get into chapter
- 27:1710, the sayings are going to be short
- 27:20sentence sayings are going to be more
- 27:21aferisms. It's going to be awesome. I
- 27:23can't wait to see you tomorrow. Same
- 27:25time, same place. So proud of you.
- 27:27Choose wisdom. See you tomorrow. Peace.
