Full transcript
- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible
- 0:13department.com to download a reading
- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 303 here at the
- 0:27Bible department. I'm super super
- 0:28excited to jump into Proverbs chapters
- 0:3145 and 6 today. If you have not done the
- 0:36reading, come on, get your life
- 0:38together, do the reading. If you haven't
- 0:40done the reading today, I want you to
- 0:41stop the video, pause the audio, go get
- 0:43the reading done, and then come back.
- 0:46There may be books where you could say
- 0:48like, "No, I really want to hear what
- 0:49pastor may have to say first, then I
- 0:51want to do the reading." But Proverbs is
- 0:54like the most I would say probably one
- 0:57of the easiest books of the Bible to
- 0:58understand it. It means what it says. It
- 1:00says what it means. And so, uh, I want
- 1:03you to get the reading done first, then
- 1:05come listen to the episode. For everyone
- 1:08who has done the reading, if you have
- 1:10read Proverbs 4:5 and 6, let's dive in.
- 1:14All right. First, just context clue. I
- 1:18may give two context clues today and
- 1:20then we'll dive into a bunch of nerdy
- 1:22nuggets. I have six written down. We'll
- 1:23see how many I get through. Okay. Um for
- 1:25our first context clue, I just want
- 1:28everyone to know wisdom literature is
- 1:30not exclusive to the Bible. Okay.
- 1:33There's actually a plethora. Uh this is
- 1:37common. This literature was common
- 1:38throughout the ancient world. um similar
- 1:41material to Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes
- 1:45have been found in Egypt, Mesopotamia,
- 1:47some well over a thousand years older
- 1:49than what we find here in the book of
- 1:52Proverbs. Okay. So, this style of
- 1:54writing
- 1:55uh putting wise sayings in, you know,
- 1:59oneliners like that's not uh something
- 2:02that Solomon invents. That's not
- 2:04something that's like exclusive to the
- 2:06Bible. I actually want to uh read you uh
- 2:09a pro an Egyptian proverb. Uh but before
- 2:12I do, I'll I'll just say this. In fact,
- 2:14we'll we'll actually see this later. Uh
- 2:16some of the material here in Proverbs
- 2:18finds its origin from outside Israel.
- 2:21Okay. Uh so this type of literature was
- 2:25primarily teaching people about how to
- 2:28live righteous or successful lives or
- 2:31how to live in harmony with the pagan
- 2:33gods. Okay. So, this literature is not
- 2:38exclusive to the biblical text. This
- 2:39actually widespread throughout the
- 2:41ancient near east. And uh here's a uh
- 2:44Egyptian proverb says this, "Do not
- 2:46stretch out your hand against an old man
- 2:49and do not speak first to a great man.
- 2:52Do not begin any dispute with the
- 2:55hot-mouthed, and do not attack him with
- 2:58words." These are both taken from uh an
- 3:01Egyptian hieroglyph uh from the 12th
- 3:04dynasty. Okay. Um so uh this is 1991
- 3:09to 1785
- 3:11BC. Okay. 1991 to 1785 BC. Okay. Uh so
- 3:19again you could see how that kind of
- 3:21sounds like a proverb, right? Do not
- 3:23stretch out your hand against an old
- 3:26man. And do not speak first to a great
- 3:29man. Do not begin any dispute with a hot
- 3:32mouththed. I love hot mouth. That's a
- 3:34great way to just call someone, you
- 3:37know, temper, you know, hotheaded, uh,
- 3:39someone with a temper. Do not begin any
- 3:41dispute with the hot mouth and do not
- 3:43attack him with words. So, uh, what
- 3:47you'll begin to realize is that, uh,
- 3:50what happens to a lot of these secular
- 3:52proverbs, they actually do find their
- 3:54way into the book of Proverbs. And they
- 3:57kind of get what I call like, uh,
- 4:00baptized. Uh, they, you know, they'll
- 4:03take the word ra out of an Egyptian
- 4:05proverb and, uh, Solomon will put the
- 4:08word Yahweh in. Uh, because here's
- 4:11what's like interesting. Truth is truth.
- 4:14Like here, like this right here, right?
- 4:16Do not stretch out your hand against an
- 4:18old man. And do not speak first to a
- 4:21great man. Like that's true. Whether
- 4:24it's found in an Egyptian proverb or a
- 4:27biblical proverb, it's wise. Like that
- 4:29is a wise way to live life. Actually,
- 4:32Paul says something very sim similar to
- 4:34Timothy. He's like, "Hey, hey, hey,
- 4:36there's guys in the church who are older
- 4:38than you, and I want to give you wisdom
- 4:40on how to lead people who are older than
- 4:42you, how to honor those who are older
- 4:44than you." James says the same thing in
- 4:47terms of do not speak first to a great
- 4:48man. James is going to say, "Hey, when
- 4:51you show up to a banquet, don't take the
- 4:52seat of honor." Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 4:54That's presumptuous. You're better off
- 4:56taking a bad seat and getting moved up
- 4:59to a seat of honor versus taking a seat
- 5:01of honor and then having to get moved to
- 5:03the cheap seats. Okay. So, even though
- 5:06these words don't find their way in the
- 5:09Bible, these ideas do. And that's the
- 5:12thing about wisdom. Wisdom is like it's
- 5:15universal. Okay? And so, uh, I want to
- 5:18remind everybody there's this passage
- 5:20that I love. Pretty sure it's first
- 5:22Timothy chapter 3. Um, I could actually
- 5:25Google it really, really quick just to
- 5:27make sure that I've got the right
- 5:28passage. I'm actually really glad that I
- 5:30looked this up in Logos. I said 1
- 5:33Timothy, it's 2 Timothy. 2 Timothy
- 5:35chapter 3. Uh and we are going to start
- 5:38reading in verse 15. Uh it says, "And
- 5:41how from infancy you have known the holy
- 5:43scriptures." This is Paul talking to
- 5:45Timothy. And in speaking of the
- 5:47scriptures, this is what Paul says,
- 5:49"Which are able to make you wise for
- 5:52salvation." Wise for salvation through
- 5:55faith in Christ Jesus. And then he says,
- 5:57"All scriptures are God breathed and
- 5:59useful for teaching." But before we even
- 6:01get to that part, which is really
- 6:03popular, verse 16 is very, very popular.
- 6:05Verse 15 says that the scriptures hold
- 6:09in them the power of wisdom that
- 6:12prepares you for salvation. And I think
- 6:15a lot of times we're trying to offer the
- 6:18world, the secular world around us,
- 6:20like, you know, truth. And not to say
- 6:22that the church doesn't have a lot of
- 6:24truth to offer, but I think that we have
- 6:26so much wisdom to offer. And wisdom
- 6:29prepares people for salvation. Because
- 6:32guess what the wisest thing is that you
- 6:34could ever do? Surrender your life to
- 6:36the lordship of Jesus. But it's hard to
- 6:38get someone to surrender their life to
- 6:39the lordship of Jesus if they have a
- 6:41habit of doing a bunch of unwise things.
- 6:44And so Dave Ramsey, a great example,
- 6:47Dave Ramsey just takes practical
- 6:50wisdoms. 50% of what that man talks
- 6:52about is straight from the book of
- 6:53Proverbs. Don't get into debt, you know,
- 6:56flee from from debt in ways like a like
- 7:00a gazelle is trying to flee from a trap.
- 7:02Like this is wisdom. And by offering
- 7:06wisdom around finances, what begins to
- 7:08happen is people begin to want to govern
- 7:10their whole life according to wisdom
- 7:12because wisdom is there to prepare you
- 7:15for salvation. And uh I think that
- 7:18there's wisdom. My pet peeve are
- 7:21Christians who are deep but not wise.
- 7:23So, they're spiritual, but they're just
- 7:25not wise. And the world needs wisdom,
- 7:28man. People need wisdom on how to
- 7:29navigate their marriage, how to do
- 7:31parenting, how to do their finances, how
- 7:33to navigate business. People need
- 7:35wisdom. And I actually think that the
- 7:37best form of evangelism that we have for
- 7:40a dying world around us, people who are
- 7:42going to hell is being wise. being wise
- 7:46people who live wise lives and and who
- 7:49can make Christ attractive through the
- 7:53wisdom of our life. Okay, so I know
- 7:56those are big 30,000 foot ideas uh and
- 7:59that's kind of, you know, I want us to
- 8:01wrap our minds around that context clue.
- 8:03And now let's get into some nerdy
- 8:05nuggets. Okay, when we look at Proverbs
- 8:07chapters 4 through 6, there's a couple
- 8:09things I just want to observe. Okay.
- 8:11Proverbs 4:1, Proverbs 4:10, Proverbs
- 8:154:20, Proverbs 5:1, Proverbs 5:20,
- 8:20Proverbs 6:1, Proverbs 6:3, Proverbs
- 8:246:20. Just in these three chapters of
- 8:27the Bible, we get eight illusions or
- 8:30references to uh my son. Okay? that the
- 8:35tone of the book of Proverbs is a father
- 8:39sitting down with his son like pleading
- 8:42with his son to learn wisdom. Okay? To
- 8:44learn wisdom. Please be wise. Please
- 8:48remember my words. Please remember my
- 8:50teaching. Please remember the lessons
- 8:52that I want to share with you. I got to
- 8:54download wisdom into your heart into
- 8:57your mind. Okay? That's the first nerdy
- 8:59nugget. It's just these eight times
- 9:01where it's over and over and over and
- 9:03over. And you always want to remember in
- 9:06the Bible, repetition means that things
- 9:08are important. Okay? When God wants to
- 9:11emphasize something, he repeats it over
- 9:13and over and over and over and over. So,
- 9:16Proverbs 4:1, 4:10, 4:20, 51, 520, 61,
- 9:2163, and 620 all emphasize the fact that
- 9:25God is speaking through the author to
- 9:28give wisdom to a son. Okay. Number two,
- 9:31Proverbs 4:7 is going to make it clear
- 9:34that you should pay any cost in order to
- 9:37attain wisdom. Okay. I'll go to chapter
- 9:394 verse 7. It says this, "The beginning
- 9:43of wisdom is this. Get wisdom." I love
- 9:45that the beginning of wisdom is this.
- 9:47Get it. Okay. Get wisdom. Um, and I love
- 9:51this. The second half of the verse.
- 9:53Though it cost you all you have, get
- 9:56understanding. Though it cost you all
- 10:00you have. Get it. It's worth It's worth
- 10:03all the money you could pay. Go get
- 10:05wisdom. Go get understanding. Um, it's
- 10:08funny because wisdom is never going to
- 10:11go on sale. It's not cheap. Wisdom will
- 10:13always cost you something. Uh I'll kind
- 10:15of give you a couple stories of how I
- 10:17spent a lot in order to gain wisdom. Uh
- 10:21first first thing just just I just want
- 10:23to let you know this that people that
- 10:25graduate with a four-year degree from
- 10:27college cuz college is expensive. Okay?
- 10:30Uh the school that I went to I think was
- 10:32like uh 120 grand for four years. Okay?
- 10:36So college is expensive and I need you
- 10:38to know this. People who end up going to
- 10:40school stay married longer. People who
- 10:42end up going to college uh end up making
- 10:45at minimum half a million dollars more
- 10:47throughout their career. Why? Because
- 10:50the number one thing that school
- 10:51provides is not information. It's
- 10:53wisdom. Wisdom on how to talk to adults.
- 10:56Wisdom. when you're 17 years old, when
- 10:58you're 18, you've got to negotiate with
- 11:00a 45 year old professor on whether or
- 11:03not, you know, can I take this exam next
- 11:05week or hey, can I It's the point of
- 11:09college is not the grades. People are
- 11:12like, I just don't understand what I'm
- 11:13going to get out of it. You're going to
- 11:14get wisdom. That's the point. You're
- 11:16going to get wisdom and yes, it's going
- 11:18to cost you, but you should pay the
- 11:20price. Why? Because wisdom is worth
- 11:23attaining. Uh there was a season where I
- 11:25was a youth pastor. We did a youth and
- 11:27young adult conference three years in a
- 11:29row. First year 500 youth and young
- 11:30adults showed up. Second year a
- 11:32thousand. Third year almost 2,000 youth
- 11:34and young adults. Well by that third
- 11:36year that conference was profitable.
- 11:38There were enough people showing up to
- 11:40that event that it was profitable.
- 11:42Right? That conference didn't lose
- 11:44money. That conference actually uh
- 11:47gained money. And so what happened
- 11:49though in the first year is that we lost
- 11:52$30,000. Okay. In order to get to the
- 11:54point where it was profitable, I had to
- 11:57spend $30,000
- 12:00essentially wasting money. And I
- 12:02remember I was sitting down with our
- 12:03executive pastor at the time and he
- 12:05went, "Did you just lose $30,000 of like
- 12:08church resources?" And I looked at him
- 12:10and said, "I didn't lose $30,000. I
- 12:13spent $30 to learn how to do a
- 12:15conference." He was like, "Man, your
- 12:18ability to talk your way out." He's
- 12:20like, "I should be firing you." Like, I
- 12:23cannot believe you used $30,000 of
- 12:24church finances to do some conference.
- 12:26That wasn't really a win. But guess
- 12:27what? They let me do it the next year.
- 12:29You know why? Cuz I quoted Proverbs 4:7.
- 12:32Though wisdom cost everything you have.
- 12:35Spend the money. Spend it. Why? Because
- 12:38in spending it, you are gaining an
- 12:41understanding of how to do something. I
- 12:43could go to learn a conference, learn
- 12:45how to doconference.com
- 12:47or I could spend $30,000 actually doing
- 12:50a conference and by the third year we
- 12:53were profitable because I invested the
- 12:56resources to learn how to do something.
- 12:59Get wisdom. Get wisdom. The first
- 13:02ministry job I ever had, I think I was
- 13:05getting paid like $22,000 a year. I had
- 13:08to live with my parents in order to get
- 13:10the job. Okay? I couldn't even move out
- 13:12of my parents house. But I learned how
- 13:14to do hospital visits. I learned how to
- 13:16do weddings. I learned how to do
- 13:17funerals. I learned how to run a prayer
- 13:19meeting. I learned how to preach. I
- 13:22Well, I gained wisdom. And my pet peeve
- 13:25are like 20 year olds who like want to
- 13:28get paid a lot of money to do their job.
- 13:30It's like first of all, you know, I was
- 13:32I was at this church called Home Church
- 13:34and uh I was in Red Deer, Alberta, which
- 13:37is Canada, and uh the senior pastor's
- 13:40dad was in the room. And the senior
- 13:42pastor's father was kind of talking
- 13:44about how these two dudes that were in
- 13:46the church, his son now leading the
- 13:49church in his 40s, maybe 50s, and their
- 13:52executive pastor, who's also in their
- 13:5440s or 50s, he said, "Yeah, I hired
- 13:56these guys when they were 21. you know,
- 13:58I hired these guys like 30 years ago
- 14:01because that senior pastor's dad at one
- 14:03point was leading the church, then
- 14:05transitioned the church to his son. And
- 14:07he said, "Yeah, I hired them when they
- 14:09were 21." And he said, "And I DIDN'T PAY
- 14:11HIM A DIME." SAID, "I DIDN'T PAY HIM
- 14:13NOTHING CUZ THEY WEREN'T WORTH NOTHING."
- 14:15AND I JUST LAUGHED. I WAS LIKE, "MAN,
- 14:17THIS IS WHY WE NEED OLD PEOPLE. THIS IS
- 14:19WHY WE NEED OLDER PEOPLE BECAUSE HE JUST
- 14:21LOOKED AT HE WAS LIKE, "WHY WOULD I PAY
- 14:23YOU? YOU MAKE MISTAKES. YOU DON'T DO
- 14:26WHAT I TELL YOU TO DO. YOU DON'T KNOW
- 14:28WHAT YOU'RE DOING. I'm not going to pay
- 14:30you anything cuz you're not worth
- 14:32paying. And you know, my friend who's
- 14:35the senior pastor's name is Pastor Jacen
- 14:37Mullen, he said, "Yeah, that's exactly
- 14:39what my dad said." He said, "But guess
- 14:41what I did? I made sure that I attained
- 14:45wisdom so that in five years I did ask
- 14:49for a salary because at that point I
- 14:52actually had the experience and
- 14:54expertise to ask for a salary. You know
- 14:57how many 22 year olds I've met that want
- 14:59to negotiate salaries and it's like why
- 15:02would I pay you? You're you should be
- 15:05paying me to be around me cuz I'm
- 15:09successful. And I think that that
- 15:12offends a lot of young people, but the
- 15:14reality is that Proverbs says, "Get
- 15:17wisdom." Although it cost you everything
- 15:19you have, get wisdom. There's a young
- 15:22man in the studio with us right now who
- 15:24like we were paying him to like edit
- 15:26content. And then, you know, a couple
- 15:28years ago, we said, "Hey man, like we've
- 15:30been paying you to like travel with
- 15:31Pastor Manny and edit content, but you
- 15:33know, as we go into 2024, we're going to
- 15:36offer you an unpaid internship in
- 15:38Dallas." This kid lived in North
- 15:40Carolina at the time. We're going to
- 15:41offer you an unpaid internship in
- 15:43Dallas. We're not going to pay you a
- 15:44dime. And you know, if you want to
- 15:47learn, hey man, we're going to take you
- 15:49off of salary. We're going to ask that
- 15:52you move your life across the country
- 15:55and that you would trust us and be a
- 15:57part of an unpaid internship. And that
- 15:59kid's name is Chemwell. And he did that.
- 16:01And you want to know why he did that?
- 16:03Because the beginning of wisdom is this.
- 16:06Get wisdom. though it cost you
- 16:09everything you have, get wisdom. And I
- 16:11think a lot of us, we think that a check
- 16:14is more valuable than wisdom. And the
- 16:16moment you think that money is more
- 16:19valuable than wisdom, you'll never have
- 16:22wisdom. And which also means you'll
- 16:24never have money either because THE
- 16:26NUMBER ONE WAY TO GET MONEY is to first
- 16:28get wisdom. There's a lot of young
- 16:30people 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29.
- 16:35You've prioritized securing the bag
- 16:39instead of prioritizing securing wisdom,
- 16:42which means you jeopardize both, which
- 16:44means you don't get wisdom or the bag.
- 16:47And the reality is that if you actually
- 16:49just prioritize getting wisdom, the bag
- 16:51would come find you because money finds
- 16:55wise people and it runs away from
- 16:57foolish people. You could actually get a
- 17:00lot of money and if you're a fool, you
- 17:02don't know how to steward it. And so you
- 17:04could win the lottery and 95% of the
- 17:06people who win the lottery for millions
- 17:08of dollars go broke within three years.
- 17:11Why? Because money is not the thing that
- 17:15you need. It's wisdom. Without wisdom,
- 17:19you will be Allen Iverson in his 50s
- 17:23made tons of money while he was playing
- 17:25in the NBA and is broke today. Why is he
- 17:28broke? Because he got money before he
- 17:31got wisdom. And now he's in his older
- 17:34years and he has wisdom and he's hoping
- 17:37to God that he can now secure more
- 17:40money. But Proverbs 4:7, get wisdom. Get
- 17:45wisdom. Get wisdom. It's the chief
- 17:48thing. I want to ask you a question.
- 17:50Like, is wisdom the number one thing
- 17:52you're going after in your life? Because
- 17:54if it's not, I want to challenge you to
- 17:56make some adjustments because you need
- 18:00wisdom. And the world that we live in
- 18:02will tell you everything else is
- 18:04important. You know, and and the reality
- 18:06is that I'm not saying money is not
- 18:08important, but what I am saying is that
- 18:10you can have all the money in the world,
- 18:12but if you don't know how to steward
- 18:14that money, and if you don't know how to
- 18:16invest it and maintain it, then you have
- 18:19a wisdom problem. All right, family. The
- 18:22wait is over. My brand new book,
- 18:24Crushing Chaos, is out now and available
- 18:28everywhere books are sold literally
- 18:31today. I walked into a Barnes & Noble
- 18:34and I signed a bunch of copies at a
- 18:36physical location. So, you can grab this
- 18:39[music] book at a physical Barnes &
- 18:41Noble or you can go to a Books a Million
- 18:43or Amazon or anywhere books are sold and
- 18:47grab a copy. If you enjoy reading the
- 18:50Bible from an ancient perspective, if
- 18:52you understand that the beauty of
- 18:55scripture is actually knowing it in
- 18:56context, then you'll love this book. And
- 19:00if there's any chaos in your personal
- 19:01life, [music] I think that reading the
- 19:04Bible from an ancient perspective can
- 19:06actually help to crush the [music] chaos
- 19:08in your life. I think this book is going
- 19:10to be a New York Times bestseller. I
- 19:12really do. I think we wrote a good one.
- 19:14I think you should get a copy today. All
- 19:17right, back to the episode. Proverbs
- 19:19chapter 5 is going to talk about sexual
- 19:22temptation and discipline. I actually uh
- 19:25want to just give you one little nerdy
- 19:27nugget that verses 15 through 19 are
- 19:30actually pretty erotic. And by erotic, I
- 19:32mean like sexually explicit. Okay, it
- 19:34says this in verse 15, drink water from
- 19:37your own sister. That means have sex
- 19:39with your own wife. This is talking
- 19:41about bodily fluids. Like this is drink
- 19:45water from your own sister. Okay. And
- 19:47that's running water from your own well
- 19:49should your springs overflow in the
- 19:51streets. Okay. Like whoa whoa whoa whoa
- 19:54whoa. You can't be out here. You you you
- 19:58can't you can't be you can't let you
- 20:00can't let the banks overflow. Okay. So
- 20:02this language is purposely erotic on
- 20:04purpose. And this is what's happening.
- 20:06You'll see this with the next psalm. Why
- 20:08do I keep saying psalm? You'll see this
- 20:10in the next proverb as well. In Proverbs
- 20:12chapter 6, it'll kind of it's going to
- 20:14give compelling imagery. Uh I actually
- 20:17want us to go to Proverbs chapter 6. Uh
- 20:19it says this in verse 26. A father's
- 20:22giving his dad advice. Um and I know,
- 20:24okay, here's here's what you're going to
- 20:26need to remember. This is a father's
- 20:29perspective to their son. Okay? And I
- 20:32know every guy kind of has a
- 20:34relationship with his son, which is
- 20:36like, "Hey man, don't tell your mom I
- 20:37said this, man. But I just got to talk
- 20:39to you manto man. All right. And
- 20:40Proverbs kind of has that vibe. Like
- 20:44mom's wives may not like what Proverbs
- 20:46has to say, but this is like a dad
- 20:48talking to his son. Okay. So this is
- 20:50this is he says avoid adulterous women
- 20:53at all cost. Okay. Proverbs chapter 6
- 20:56verse verse 26. He said uh do not lust
- 20:59actually verse 25. Do not lust in your
- 21:01heart after her beauty or captivate or
- 21:04her or let her captivate you with her
- 21:06her eyes. Okay. Run, flee from the
- 21:08adulterous woman. Okay. And then it says
- 21:11this, and I know women may not like
- 21:13this. You may not like this, but this is
- 21:14a man's perspective to his son. For a
- 21:17prostitute can be had for a loaf of
- 21:19bread. A prostitute be have for a loaf
- 21:21of bread. But another man's wife prays
- 21:24on your very life. A dad is essentially
- 21:27saying, "Bro, IF YOU ARE THIS HOT AND
- 21:31BOTHERED, go get a prostitute for a loaf
- 21:33of bread. the price of a loaf of bread.
- 21:35You could go sleep with a hooker, dude.
- 21:37Like, what's wrong with you? But another
- 21:39man's wife, HERE WE GO. THIS IS WHAT
- 21:41HAPPENS IF YOU HAVE SEX WITH ANOTHER
- 21:43man's wife. Verse 34, for jealousy
- 21:45arouses a husband's fury. Like, brother,
- 21:49you you could go have sex with a
- 21:51prostitute and just pay pay the the
- 21:53price. IT'S IT'S A LOAF OF BREAD. IT'S
- 21:56CHEAP. PROSTITUTES ARE CHEAP. BUT SEX
- 21:58WITH ANOTHER MAN'S WIFE, YOU'RE GOING TO
- 22:00AROUSE a husband's fury.
- 22:03and he will show you no mercy when he
- 22:07takes revenge. He will not accept any
- 22:10compensation. He will refuse a bribe,
- 22:13however great it is. Fury. Okay, it's
- 22:17smarter. If you have to choose between
- 22:20sin and you have to choose between
- 22:23prostitute and HAVE SEX WITH SOMEBODY
- 22:26ELSE'S WIFE, AVOID ANOTHER MAN'S WIFE AT
- 22:29ALL COSTS. AGAIN, we may not like this,
- 22:32but Proverbs is going to say, why? Okay,
- 22:37why? Why should we avoid having sex with
- 22:40people's wives? Well, cuz it leads to
- 22:43being broke. [screaming] Broke. Okay,
- 22:46Proverbs
- 22:485, uh, it says this, like if you don't
- 22:51have self-control over your sexual
- 22:53desires, here's what's going to happen.
- 22:55Uh it says, I'll actually start in verse
- 22:58eight. Keep to a path far from her.
- 23:01Who's her? The adulterous woman. Okay.
- 23:04Do not go near the door of her house.
- 23:06Aka avoid sin. Don't fight it. Avoid
- 23:10temptation. Don't fight it. Put no
- 23:12confidence in your flesh. Like don't
- 23:14even go near the house, dude. Verse 9.
- 23:17Lest you you lose your honor to others
- 23:20and your dignity to one who is cruel,
- 23:24lest strangers feast on your wealth and
- 23:28your toil enrich the house of another.
- 23:32Why should you avoid adultery? CUZ
- 23:35YOU'LL GO BROKE. LIKE LIKE PROVERBS IS
- 23:38LIKE, "HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY.
- 23:41Before we overspiritualize this, before
- 23:45we're just kind of like, hey, you know,
- 23:46because you love the Lord, Proverbs is
- 23:48going to make it real simple. Hey, don't
- 23:51do this lest you lose your honor to
- 23:54others and your dignity to one who is
- 23:56cruel, lest strangers feast on your
- 23:59wealth. On your wealth. I was talking to
- 24:03uh uh a person who's a a mentor, a
- 24:06spiritual leader in my life, a spiritual
- 24:08father in my life, a pastor. It was just
- 24:10kind of a man-to-man moment and we were
- 24:12talking about another pastor who had a
- 24:13moral failure and uh this leader just
- 24:16kind of looked at me and just went,
- 24:17"They lost a half a million dollar book
- 24:19deal like over an an affair." I'm sorry.
- 24:23And I've never had a sexual experience
- 24:25worth half a million dollars. Never.
- 24:28Never. And if you really like ask me
- 24:32like why am I faithful to my wife? I
- 24:34would say A cuz I love the Lord 100%. B,
- 24:38because I cannot fathom my son looking
- 24:42me in the face and not having respect
- 24:44for me. Okay. And then number three, cuz
- 24:47I'm too successful to do dumb stuff. I'm
- 24:51sorry, but I'm not losing my home. I'm
- 24:55not losing my career over what? Over
- 24:58over 30 minutes. Over an hour. Over
- 25:02what? A night? Yeah, right. This is
- 25:05ridiculous. I remember there was a
- 25:07season of my life there was this
- 25:08two-year window where I was just dating
- 25:10someone who I shouldn't have been dating
- 25:12and uh every time I would go to this
- 25:13girl's house, you know, there was street
- 25:15cleaning that that was on the street
- 25:18that I parked on where I would go visit
- 25:20this girl and I would be spending the
- 25:22night. I was having sex outside of
- 25:24marriage. I was just an idiot. Just
- 25:26being an idiot, you know. And um I
- 25:28remember there was two times where my
- 25:32car got towed. like I'm leaving her
- 25:34house at like 5 6:00 in the morning and
- 25:36I'm coming out to the street and my car
- 25:38is gone. And uh I remember like having
- 25:40to go to the city impound like get my
- 25:43car out and uh you know what after the
- 25:46second time, you know, I broke up with
- 25:48this girl. I stopped having sex with her
- 25:50and I took the receipt of the like $300
- 25:54that I had to pay to get my car out of
- 25:57the impound and and I framed it and I
- 26:00was like the next time I'm I I'm so you
- 26:05know full of lust that I that I not
- 26:08thinking straight. I'm just gonna think
- 26:10about the money I had to spend getting
- 26:14my car out of the impound. And I think
- 26:16that there are some of us like you
- 26:19actually need to come face to face with
- 26:22the failure that is on the other side of
- 26:26you making foolish sexual decisions. And
- 26:31the thing that Proverbs does that no
- 26:33other book of the Bible does is that
- 26:35Proverbs paints this imagery for us that
- 26:39you can't really shake. It's not a law.
- 26:42Like the there are other books of the
- 26:44Bible that will explain this in like law
- 26:46form or like covenant form or
- 26:48commandment form, but Proverbs doesn't
- 26:51do that. Proverbs explains things with
- 26:54the poetry and the imagery that just
- 26:57makes you go, "Yo, man, I I can't
- 27:00remember all the super deep reasons, but
- 27:03I can remember, hey, if I lack
- 27:06discipline, I will be broke." Okay,
- 27:08cool. I got you. I got you. And so,
- 27:11Proverbs is going to say over and over
- 27:15and over and over, "Hey, son, you got to
- 27:19practice sexual purity for all kinds of
- 27:22awesome reasons. But if you don't have
- 27:23those awesome reasons, let me give you
- 27:25reasons that I know will motivate you.
- 27:28Because you don't want strangers to
- 27:31feast on your wealth or your toil to
- 27:34enrich the house of another. What good
- 27:37is it if I spend all these years
- 27:39building up the Orango name and the
- 27:41Orango brand and the Bible department
- 27:43brand and the armor brand and then I go
- 27:46and I cheat on my wife and now my son
- 27:48has nothing to inherit and and that is
- 27:51that would be a shame. That would be a
- 27:53literal shame. The biggest thing I could
- 27:56give my son is a good name. And the only
- 27:59way to give him a good name is to live a
- 28:01pure life. And I more than money, I
- 28:05don't want to just leave something to
- 28:06him. I want to leave something in him.
- 28:09And the main thing I want to leave to
- 28:10him is a good name that he can go
- 28:13anywhere in America and say the name
- 28:15Orango. And that name opened doors for
- 28:19him. and I would forfeit my ability to
- 28:22give him a good name if I would make a
- 28:24short-sighted decision and go to the
- 28:27house of adultery or le let the woman of
- 28:30adultery lead me and man that's a
- 28:33timeless truth. Can I ask you a hard
- 28:36question? Are you intimately aware of
- 28:39the consequences that would befall you
- 28:43if you were actually to follow your
- 28:45foolish desires? Because a lot of us are
- 28:47living in a fantasy and you are living
- 28:50in best case scenario. You think that
- 28:52you can sin and get away with it. But
- 28:54Proverbs causes us to come back to the
- 28:57reality that no, no, no, no. Your
- 29:00failures, your faults, your mistakes
- 29:02will catch up to you. And when they
- 29:03catch up to you, they will 100% make
- 29:07sure that your life is nowhere close to
- 29:11the level of success that you could have
- 29:13had you led a life that was pleasing to
- 29:16the Lord. That's not just true for
- 29:18Solomon and his son. That's not just
- 29:20true for David and his son. That's true
- 29:22for me. That's true for you. All right.
