- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible
- 0:13department.com to download a reading
- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 302 here at the
- 0:27Bible department. We are diving into a
- 0:30brand new book of the Bible. And oh, I
- 0:34am excited because we are actually
- 0:35diving into one of my favorite books of
- 0:38the Bible. We're diving into the book of
- 0:41Proverbs. And I love Proverbs. Okay? And
- 0:46uh I I really do believe that the
- 0:49foundation of your life should be that
- 0:51of King David and Solomon. King David,
- 0:54as we just, you know, learned through
- 0:57studying the book of Psalms, was the
- 0:59figurehead for worship. And I think
- 1:02worship helps us to touch heaven. And I
- 1:04think King Solomon is the figurehead for
- 1:06wisdom, which helps us to touch the
- 1:09earth and be effective here on the
- 1:11earth. And I think that every single
- 1:12believer should be touching heaven,
- 1:15touching earth. You should have worship
- 1:17and wisdom as the foundations of your
- 1:20life. And so I'm really really really
- 1:22really really really
- 1:24excited to dive into the book of
- 1:26Proverbs. Not only am I pumped just to
- 1:28get into Proverbs chapters 1, 2, and
- 1:31three, which is our assigned reading for
- 1:32today, but I'm I'm excited to camp out
- 1:35in the book of Proverbs over the next
- 1:37couple of days or weeks or however long
- 1:39it's going to take us to trek through
- 1:41the book of Proverbs. If you have not
- 1:44done the reading for today, then like I
- 1:47say every day, how about you stop the
- 1:49video, pause the audio, go get the
- 1:51reading done. I don't know if you found
- 1:54Psalms to be like super enjoyable
- 1:56reading, but man, I love Proverbs. I I
- 2:01find the book of Proverbs to be
- 2:02entertaining. Very, very enjoyable
- 2:05reading. So, uh, how about you go to
- 2:08Proverbs chapter 1, read chapters 1, 2,
- 2:11and 3, and then come on back if you
- 2:13haven't done the reading yet for today.
- 2:15I'm going to try to give us context
- 2:17clues. Now, context is going to work
- 2:19very, very differently for the book of
- 2:22Proverbs. It's not like there are
- 2:24historical moments attached to these
- 2:26proverbs. Okay? Every day I I may give
- 2:29like the context clues will just look
- 2:31different. Okay? I'll probably give some
- 2:35overarching idea that will help us uh to
- 2:39navigate our way through wisdom
- 2:40literature in general. We'll we'll see.
- 2:43But every day I'll give you a lot of
- 2:45nerdy nuggets and we going to have a lot
- 2:47of timeless truths uh because wisdom is
- 2:51very relevant for our life today. Man,
- 2:57there's something that the world needs.
- 2:58It is wisdom. And uh let me just give
- 3:01this precursor. Okay, it's funny. I've
- 3:04always gone to churches that I would say
- 3:07are marked by wisdom. And uh one time I
- 3:10invited somebody to church, not the
- 3:12garden, not the church that we're
- 3:13planting, but I invited them to a church
- 3:15that I was on staff at. And I asked them
- 3:17like, "Hey, like what do you think?" And
- 3:18they were like, "I wasn't deep enough
- 3:20for me." And I was like, "Deep? Like
- 3:22what do you mean?" And they, you know,
- 3:24they kind of just started like it was
- 3:26just too practical. And I was like, "So,
- 3:29you must not like the book of Proverbs."
- 3:32Because like God's wisdom isn't so lofty
- 3:36and deep that it just makes you feel
- 3:38smart. And this is a big theme when it
- 3:41comes to wisdom in the Bible. That
- 3:43wisdom for the biblical authors is not
- 3:46intelligence. It's not like how
- 3:48confusing something is or how
- 3:50complicated it is. For the authors of
- 3:52the Bible, wisdom is found in very
- 3:55practical things. And so we're going to
- 3:57discover that all kinds of people get
- 4:00called wise in the Bible. Actually, I'll
- 4:02give you a couple of examples, okay? In
- 4:05Exodus 31:2, there's a man by the name
- 4:08of Bezel. He's an artist who crafted the
- 4:10Ark of the Covenant. He said in in the
- 4:13word Hebrew to be wise in craftsmanship.
- 4:16And the same word is used a few chapters
- 4:18later in Exodus 35:2 to describe a woman
- 4:22who's skilled in weaving. She's wise.
- 4:25Why? because she's excellent. Okay.
- 4:27Next, the word for wise is also used for
- 4:30Solomon composing songs and proverbs.
- 4:33Okay. Uh we'll get into authorship in
- 4:35just a second. Those who are
- 4:36strategically minded, generals. Isaiah
- 4:3910:13 is going to say like those people
- 4:42who know how to like win battles, win
- 4:44wars. Generals who are strategic, those
- 4:47people are wise. Uh Jeremiah 9:17 is
- 4:51going to say there are certain people
- 4:53who are skilled in mourning. Remember in
- 4:55the biblical world you could actually
- 4:57pay people to come to like a funeral to
- 5:00professionally mourn. Okay? So there are
- 5:02people who are skilled in that. They're
- 5:04excellent at that. Those who are wise in
- 5:07ship building and navigation. Ship
- 5:09building and navigation. If you're good
- 5:10at that, then you're called wise in the
- 5:13Bible. This is Ezekiel 27:8. And
- 5:16Jeremiah chapter 10 verse9 actually says
- 5:19that even those who have the skill
- 5:22required to craft pagan idols that they
- 5:26have a wisdom. Why? Because they have a
- 5:28skill, they have a craft, they have
- 5:30excellence. Okay? They have expertise.
- 5:33And so wisdom for the authors of the
- 5:37Bible is not phil philosophy. It's not
- 5:40like how much information can I load
- 5:43into my brain. It's how well do I live
- 5:46my life? Okay, wisdom is very, very
- 5:50practical. And so to the person who's
- 5:52like, it wasn't deep enough for me. I
- 5:54was like, I'm sorry that we weren't
- 5:56spinning around and twirling and waving
- 5:59flags, I don't know. Like, what did you
- 6:01want? Like, you don't want to go to a
- 6:03church on Sunday that's going to make
- 6:04you a better wife, a better husband, a
- 6:06better mom, a better father, a better
- 6:08employer, a better entrepreneur, a
- 6:10better business owner. Like, Don't
- 6:13you want to GO TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY? AND
- 6:15LIKE THE pastor give practical
- 6:18wisdom like wisdom. There's a whole
- 6:21bunch of people who know how to pray for
- 6:2214 hours but don't know how to like
- 6:24treat their kids. They don't know how to
- 6:26like be good parents. They don't know
- 6:28how to like be a good spouse. They don't
- 6:30know how to build a home. Not just
- 6:33actually physically build a house, but
- 6:35like build a home. Build culture. Build
- 6:38teams that work. Build businesses that
- 6:40thrive. fix real problems like you know
- 6:44I so I don't know I I like wisdom I love
- 6:48wisdom all right I I don't like anything
- 6:51that feels like a waste of time and uh
- 6:54wisdom is is helping you to get straight
- 6:56to the point to actually fix problems I
- 6:59love wisdom and uh I'm glad that we get
- 7:01to talk about wisdom for the next couple
- 7:03of days or weeks or however long we're
- 7:05going to be in the book of proverbs
- 7:06family the wait is over my brand new
- 7:09book crushing chaos is out now and
- 7:13available everywhere books are sold
- 7:16literally today. I walked into a Barnes
- 7:19& Noble and I signed a bunch of copies
- 7:21at a physical location. So, you can grab
- 7:24this book at a physical Barnes & Noble
- 7:27or you can go to a Books a Million or
- 7:29Amazon or anywhere books are sold and
- 7:32grab a copy. If you enjoy reading the
- 7:35Bible from an ancient perspective, if
- 7:38you understand that the beauty of
- 7:40scripture is actually knowing it in
- 7:42context, then you'll love this book. And
- 7:45if there's any chaos in your personal
- 7:47life, I think that reading the Bible
- 7:49from an ancient perspective can actually
- 7:52help to crush the chaos in your life. I
- 7:54think this book is going to be a New
- 7:56York Times bestseller. I really do. I
- 7:58think we wrote a good one. I think you
- 8:00should get a copy today. All right, back
- 8:03to the episode. Let's talk authorship.
- 8:05Okay, no one debates whether or not
- 8:07Solomon is the author of these proverbs.
- 8:10Okay, now there's a big debate on
- 8:12whether or not Solomon is actually the
- 8:14author of Song of Songs or whether he's
- 8:16the author of Ecclesiastes. Those
- 8:19scholars debate that heavily. No one
- 8:21really debates whether or not Solomon is
- 8:23the author of Proverbs. And part of the
- 8:26reason is what we have right here in
- 8:28First Kings 4. I'll start reading in
- 8:31verse 29. says this, "God gave Solomon
- 8:34wisdom." Man, let me stop right there. I
- 8:37think if God gave Solomon wisdom, God
- 8:39can give you wisdom. Okay? If you're an
- 8:41idiot, like God wants to give you
- 8:43wisdom. Like, if you're foolish, God
- 8:45wants to give you wisdom. If you're
- 8:46broke, God wants to give you wisdom. If
- 8:48you've been dating idiots, God wants to
- 8:49give you wisdom. If you just been
- 8:51bouncing around from one relationship to
- 8:52the next relationship and you don't know
- 8:53what you're doing, God wants to give you
- 8:55wisdom. If your baby daddy stupid, God
- 8:57wants to give you wisdom. God wants to
- 8:59give you wisdom. Like man, if if you if
- 9:03you lack wisdom, God desperately wants
- 9:07to give you wisdom. He wants you to be a
- 9:09thriving, successful, flourishing,
- 9:11excellent, skilled person. He wants to
- 9:14give you wisdom. Okay? If you got anger
- 9:16problems, God wants to give you wisdom.
- 9:18Anything that's going to take away from
- 9:20your ability to thrive at life, he wants
- 9:23to give you wisdom. Okay? God gave
- 9:25Solomon wisdom and very great insight
- 9:28and a breadth of understanding as
- 9:31measurless as the sand on the seashore.
- 9:33Solomon's wisdom was greater than the
- 9:36wisdom of all the people of the east. He
- 9:38was wiser than anyone else including
- 9:40Ethan the Ezra height, wiser than Hemon,
- 9:43Callhole, and Darda, the sons of Mahol.
- 9:46And his fame spread to all the
- 9:48surrounding nations. By the way, that's
- 9:50the goal of wisdom, to actually win the
- 9:52world. the deep stuff, the stuff that
- 9:54makes you feel like you're smart but
- 9:56really is a waste of time. Like the
- 9:59world isn't impressed by that. Here's
- 10:01what the world is impressed by. Here's
- 10:02what people who don't know God is
- 10:03impressed by. You having a good
- 10:05marriage. You having fantastic kids.
- 10:08Kids that are disciplined. You running a
- 10:09thriving business, profitable. You being
- 10:12excellent. All right? You being
- 10:14fantastic at what you do. Okay? So, the
- 10:17surrounding nations are all coming to
- 10:18Solomon because he's wise. And here we
- 10:21go. He spoke 3,000 proverbs and his
- 10:24songs numbered a thousand5. He spoke
- 10:27about plant life. So right there that
- 10:29verse verse 32 lets us know yeah like
- 10:32these proverbs like we have a recorded
- 10:35historical you know data that Solomon
- 10:38actually did like speak 3,000 proverbs.
- 10:42So the collection of proverbs that we
- 10:44have 100% Solomon. Okay through and
- 10:47through. No one debates whether or not
- 10:48this is Solomon. It says this in verse
- 10:5033. He spoke about plant life. Now this
- 10:53is fascinating. Okay, this is wisdom. He
- 10:56spoke about plant life from the cedar of
- 10:58Lebanon to the hissup that grows out of
- 11:01walls. He also spoke about animals and
- 11:04birds, reptiles and fish. I I want you
- 11:06to think about this, okay? When you
- 11:08think about plant life, cedar trees,
- 11:10hissup, when you think about animals,
- 11:13birds, reptiles, fish, what does that
- 11:15make you think of? I give you a second.
- 11:17I know what it makes me think of. What
- 11:18does that make you think of? Eden. Yeah,
- 11:21the Garden of Eden. Okay. So, one of the
- 11:23themes throughout the book of Proverbs
- 11:26is that wisdom offers a door back into
- 11:31the Edenic ideal. Okay? That wisdom is
- 11:36actually trying to get us back to the
- 11:38Garden of Eden. Okay? back to the kind
- 11:42of wisdom that God was trying to
- 11:45download into Adam and Eve's mind,
- 11:48heart, soul, spirit. Okay. So, so the
- 11:52the wisdom literature of the Bible is is
- 11:55providing a path back into what is the
- 11:59original design of the earth? What's the
- 12:02original design of humanity? How can we
- 12:05understand that original design? And how
- 12:07can we create lifestyles and communities
- 12:11that actually flourish? Okay, this is
- 12:14not a coincidence, okay, that Solomon is
- 12:18is, you know, has things to say about
- 12:20plants and animals and trees. Well, this
- 12:24is very very very intentional. The
- 12:27language that's going to get used all
- 12:29throughout the psalm all all throughout
- 12:30the proverbs sorry not psalms all
- 12:33throughout the proverbs is going to be
- 12:35edenic language and we'll get into that
- 12:38in a second from all nations people came
- 12:40to listen to Solomon's wisdom because
- 12:42wisdom is evangelistic sent by all the
- 12:45kings of the world who had heard of his
- 12:48wisdom okay so Solomon is the author
- 12:51wisdom literature is an entire genre and
- 12:54proverbs psalms ecclesiastes the Song of
- 12:57Songs and Job is the wisdom literature
- 12:59of the Bible. As we continue our trek
- 13:02through Proverbs, I'll drop context
- 13:05clues on just wisdom literature, how to
- 13:07interpret it. And audience, okay, I want
- 13:09we'll say this and then I'll give you
- 13:11seven nerdy nuggets. Okay, seven nerdy
- 13:13nuggets. The audience are always going
- 13:15to be children and those who are already
- 13:19wise. Okay, children. If you look at
- 13:22Proverbs 1:8, it says, "Listen, my son."
- 13:26And then if you get to verse 10, "My
- 13:28son," and then verse 15, "my son." And
- 13:32then chapter 2 verse one, "My son."
- 13:35Okay? Over and over and over and over
- 13:37and over. It's the same in 31 and 3:21.
- 13:41Okay? Uh it's the same in 3 verse 11.
- 13:44Okay? My son, my son, my son, my son.
- 13:47And so I'll just say this personally,
- 13:50part of the reason I love Proverbs so
- 13:52much is because I didn't have a
- 13:54biological father or an earthly father
- 13:57who could really give me wisdom, which
- 13:59is the number one thing you need. You
- 14:01need wisdom. And I can always tell
- 14:04whether or not people had, you know,
- 14:06strong or weak relationships with their
- 14:08parents based on how wise they are
- 14:10because that's the number one thing a
- 14:12parent should be leaving to you is
- 14:14wisdom. Not money, not an inheritance,
- 14:16not cars, not property. If your parents
- 14:19leave more to you than they leave in
- 14:22you, then you'll squander everything
- 14:24they leave to you. Okay? So wisdom is a
- 14:28thing that I believe parents should be
- 14:30leaving in you so that they don't
- 14:32squander what they leave to you. So my
- 14:35dad was incarcerated. My dad was on
- 14:37drugs. I didn't have a father to really
- 14:40share wisdom. the things that my dad
- 14:43taught me I had to unlearn because they
- 14:45were toxic and crazy. And so I honestly
- 14:49when I started to read the book of
- 14:52Proverbs, I felt like the Lord was
- 14:55grabbing me by the ears and and and the
- 14:58Lord began to teach me wisdom and the
- 15:01Lord began to put spiritual fathers in
- 15:03my life to teach me wisdom. And uh I I
- 15:07kid you not, if you have a pastor or
- 15:11like a mentor or a coach um who wants to
- 15:15give you wisdom, you need to listen with
- 15:17everything you have. And we currently
- 15:20live in a society that's so mummified,
- 15:23not mummified, mummified. We just have a
- 15:26lack of fathers. And Proverbs is going
- 15:28to give a dad's perspective to their
- 15:32sons. So, so Proverbs is gonna have
- 15:34masculine energy, okay? So, Giloinso,
- 15:38okay? Because this is not a mom giving
- 15:40advice to her daughter. This is a father
- 15:43giving advice and wisdom to his son. And
- 15:46I think that one of the things that's
- 15:48lost in society right now is the
- 15:50understanding that part of the ways that
- 15:53men love, especially their children, is
- 15:56by teaching. Instruction and teaching is
- 16:00a love language. Okay, it's not a love
- 16:03language that we talk about, but man,
- 16:05you know you got a good dad if they
- 16:07taught you how to tie a tie. You know
- 16:09you got a good dad. They taught you how
- 16:10to change a tire. You know you got a
- 16:12good dad. They taught you how to invest
- 16:13money. You know you got a good dad when
- 16:16they gave you wisdom. Me and my wife
- 16:20love our son equally, but we don't love
- 16:22our son the same. Part of the way that I
- 16:25love our son is by preparing him and
- 16:29training him for a cruel, harsh world.
- 16:32Okay? And part of how I do that is by
- 16:34giving that boy wisdom. I'm constantly
- 16:39in teaching mode when it comes to my
- 16:41son. Okay? I'm constantly in instruction
- 16:45mode when it comes to my son. And I'm
- 16:47not saying moms don't do that. I'm not
- 16:49saying that wives don't do that. I am
- 16:52saying that what we kind of call
- 16:55mansplaining in in our world right now,
- 16:59it I don't know if it's mansplaining. I
- 17:01I just think men like to teach and
- 17:04instruct and make things as plain as
- 17:06possible. And the temptation is, you
- 17:09know, as a son, you could get into this
- 17:12mode where you're like, "Ah, I heard
- 17:13that story already. I heard my dad say
- 17:16that." Well, just because you heard your
- 17:18dad say it doesn't mean that your heart
- 17:20was ready to receive it. And so our
- 17:22heart posture when we approach Proverbs
- 17:25needs to be I'm in the seat of a son and
- 17:28my father is going to teach me some
- 17:30things. My heavenly father's going to
- 17:32teach me some things. Maybe some
- 17:34spiritual fathers are going to teach me
- 17:35some things. Or maybe my earthly dad is
- 17:37going to teach me some things because I
- 17:39have not learned everything that there
- 17:40is to learn. and I need to attain wisdom
- 17:44and I need to be in the seat to to to
- 17:47receive it. Okay. So, there are seven
- 17:49nuggets that we're going to look at
- 17:51today and we're going to fly through
- 17:53them. The number one nugget, I may not
- 17:55be able to get through all seven. Uh I
- 17:56I'll get through as many as I can and
- 17:58we'll maybe save some for another day.
- 18:00The number one thing that you're going
- 18:01to need to learn, okay, is the fear of
- 18:03Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. We're
- 18:05going to get this theme over and over
- 18:07and over and over and over and over. The
- 18:09fear of Yahweh is the beginning of
- 18:11wisdom. Now, is the fear of Yahweh the
- 18:14goal of wisdom? No. It's just the
- 18:16beginning. It's the first step. Why is
- 18:18it the first step? Well, it's the first
- 18:20step because when I fear him, that means
- 18:23I've placed him in his proper place.
- 18:25He's magnificent. He's grand. He's in
- 18:29transcendent. He's wise. So, the fear of
- 18:32the Lord should create humility in me.
- 18:35It should put me in the learner seat.
- 18:37There's a, you know, kind of a secular
- 18:39cliche proverb that says like hard to
- 18:42teach somebody a lesson when they're
- 18:43winning. It means that failure actually
- 18:46opens you up to wanting to learn some
- 18:48stuff because failure creates humility.
- 18:52Okay? Proud proud people can't learn
- 18:54anything. Okay? So, so the first thing
- 18:56that you got to learn is the fear of the
- 18:58Lord. There is no way you're arrogant
- 19:02when you realize how insignificant you
- 19:04are in the grand scheme of life. Like
- 19:07when you realize that God's infinite and
- 19:09you're finite, that he is omnipotent and
- 19:11you're not. When you realize he's
- 19:14omnisient and you're not, the fear of
- 19:16the Lord should put you in proper
- 19:18perspective. And so you can only attain
- 19:22wisdom if you have humility. Okay? So
- 19:25that's going to be a massive theme. And
- 19:27I want you to begin to just track that
- 19:29theme even in these first three
- 19:30chapters. Number two, the purpose of the
- 19:33whole book of Proverbs is found in
- 19:35verses 2 to6 of Proverbs chapter 1.
- 19:38Okay, that's our second nerdy nugget.
- 19:40Okay, it says this, for gaining wisdom
- 19:41and instruction, for understanding words
- 19:43of insight, for receiving instruction
- 19:45and prudent behavior, doing what is
- 19:47right and just and fair. For giving
- 19:49prudence to those who are simple,
- 19:51knowledge and discretion to the young.
- 19:54Okay, we'll talk about this probably
- 19:56tomorrow or the next day or the next day
- 19:58like why children and young people are
- 20:02such an emphasis in the in terms of who
- 20:05should be receiving wisdom. Let the wise
- 20:08listen and add to their learning. So the
- 20:10this book is not just for the young or
- 20:13for for sons but it's also for people
- 20:16who are already wise cuz people who are
- 20:18already wise guess what they want more
- 20:19wisdom because you can never have
- 20:21enough. they can add to their learning
- 20:22and let the discerning get guidance for
- 20:25understanding proverbs and parables and
- 20:27the sayings and riddles of the wise.
- 20:30Okay, that is the purpose of the book.
- 20:32So, if you're ever wondering what's
- 20:33Proverbs up to, well, you just read
- 20:35Proverbs 1:es 2 to6. Number three, we're
- 20:38going to see this today, tomorrow, most
- 20:41days when we look at the Proverbs that
- 20:42wisdom is personified as a woman. Okay?
- 20:45Now, I think that this is important
- 20:47because it culminates in Proverbs 31. In
- 20:50Proverbs 31, what's going to happen?
- 20:52This is going to be this the book of
- 20:54Proverbs going to end on a wife of noble
- 20:57character. And uh a lot of people will
- 21:00take that wife of noble character
- 21:01literally. But every other time, wisdom
- 21:04was personified as a woman throughout
- 21:05the book, we took it not literally. I
- 21:09think actually the goal of the entirety
- 21:11of the book of Proverbs, the reason that
- 21:13it ends with a wife of noble character
- 21:15is because I think Proverbs is trying to
- 21:17get you to fall in love with a woman
- 21:19named wisdom. So, Proverbs wants you to
- 21:22marry wisdom. And I would say before you
- 21:25marry anybody, you should marry wisdom.
- 21:28And the only way to even choose a spouse
- 21:30well is to first marry wisdom. And we
- 21:33got a lot of people who don't want to
- 21:35choose a spouse. They want God to choose
- 21:36a spouse for them. And I just want to be
- 21:38very clear. There's no time in the Bible
- 21:40where God tells another person who to
- 21:42marry. Now, you can argue with me. You
- 21:44can get mad in the comments. You can
- 21:45debate. That doesn't m I don't care what
- 21:47you do. I'm wise. So, foolish people
- 21:51argue. I'm not going to argue. You know,
- 21:53I you can argue with me all you want.
- 21:55But God wants you to marry wisdom so
- 21:58that whoever you do marry is a wise
- 22:00choice. And a lot of people want to
- 22:02advocate their responsibility in
- 22:04choosing a spouse because they are
- 22:07scared of the consequences of making a
- 22:09bad decision. But you won't make a bad
- 22:11decision if you actually marry wisdom
- 22:12before you marry anybody else. Okay? So
- 22:15wisdom is personified as a woman.
- 22:17Really, really, really important. Next,
- 22:19number four, you're going to see this
- 22:21all throughout the book of Proverbs that
- 22:23wisdom is valuable and profitable. Okay,
- 22:28so just here we go. You can be offended.
- 22:31Uh, you know, it is what it is. I don't
- 22:33take advice from broke people, okay? I I
- 22:36don't part of my a rule for my life is
- 22:39whatever like poor people are doing, I
- 22:41don't do it. I I don't do what poor
- 22:43people are doing, okay? I I don't I
- 22:45don't find poverty to be something that
- 22:48is inherently holy or or any like I I
- 22:52just I don't I don't do what poor people
- 22:54do. Okay? So, Proverbs chapter 2:1 says,
- 22:57"Store up wisdom like it's currency."
- 23:00Proverbs 2:4 says that, you know what?
- 23:03Wisdom is like silver. It's like hidden
- 23:05treasure. Chapter 2:7 says that wisdom
- 23:08brings success. Chapter 3:4 says that
- 23:11wisdom brings favor. Chapter 3:9 says
- 23:14that wisdom brings wealth. Chapter 3:14
- 23:18says wisdom is better than silver or
- 23:20gold. Chapter 3:1 15 says it's better
- 23:22than rubies. Okay? Chapter 3:16 says
- 23:26it's it brings riches. Okay. So, so
- 23:29Proverbs is going to make a link not
- 23:32just between wisdom and and femininity
- 23:35or or womanhood, but it's going to make
- 23:38correlation between wisdom and
- 23:40profitability. Okay? Profitability. One
- 23:44one of the things that I say all the
- 23:45time, if it if it don't make dollars, it
- 23:47don't make sense. like like you you're
- 23:51proof to me that something is wise is
- 23:54will it lead to wealth or will it lead
- 23:57to poverty? And if you're uncomfortable
- 23:59with that as a as a kind of a life
- 24:01model, you're going to be uncomfortable
- 24:02with Proverbs cuz Proverbs essentially
- 24:04going to say a big reason to not do a
- 24:06whole bunch of things because that leads
- 24:08to being poor. Last nerdy nugget that
- 24:10I'll give you is that and this will lead
- 24:12into our Thomas truth. What you're going
- 24:14to see is that wisdom is going to get
- 24:16exalted and esteemed as a agent of
- 24:21creativity and creation. Okay. So what
- 24:24the book of proverbs is going to say is
- 24:26that the Lord used wisdom before he laid
- 24:30the foundation of the earth. Okay. This
- 24:32is chapter 3. This is Proverbs chapter 3
- 24:3519 says this. By wisdom the Lord laid
- 24:38the earth's foundations. By
- 24:39understanding he set the heavens in
- 24:42place. By his knowledge the watery
- 24:44depths were divided and the clouds let
- 24:46drop the dew. Okay. So wisdom is is
- 24:50going to be seen as a powerful agent
- 24:53that was with Yahweh in the creation of
- 24:56the cosmos. Okay. So this is a creation
- 25:00and a creative agent which gets us back
- 25:02to Eden. Okay. This is our timeless
- 25:05truth for the day. This is Proverbs
- 25:073:18. Proverbs 3:18. Wisdom. The she
- 25:11hears wisdom. She is a tree of life to
- 25:14those who take hold of her. Those who
- 25:16hold her fast will be blessed. A tree of
- 25:19life. What is Proverbs actually
- 25:22advertising? It's actually saying, "Hey,
- 25:24in the Garden of Eden, there's a tree of
- 25:26knowledge of good and evil." And because
- 25:29Adam and Eve chose to take it instead of
- 25:32waiting on God's timing to receive it,
- 25:35they then forfeited their right to the
- 25:37tree of life. Okay? because they took
- 25:39something instead of waiting to receive
- 25:41it. Now they forfeited their ability to
- 25:44get, you know, access to the tree of
- 25:46life. And what Proverbs is saying is
- 25:49Proverbs and all of wisdom in the Bible
- 25:52is saying we actually want God wants you
- 25:55to have knowledge of good and evil. And
- 25:57I'll talk about why in in later days as
- 26:00we continue our trek through Proverbs.
- 26:02God wants you to have the knowledge of
- 26:04good and evil, but he also wants you to
- 26:06have a tree of life. And that's not just
- 26:08true for Solomon. That's true for you
- 26:11and I. We need both the knowledge of
- 26:14good and evil and we need the tree of
- 26:17life. And so what Proverbs is doing is
- 26:20it's offering a way back to the Garden
- 26:22of Eden. And it's going to do that in
- 26:24subtle ways by saying that Solomon
- 26:27talked about plant life and animals. But
- 26:29it's also going to do that in blatant
- 26:31ways like saying like wisdom is a tree
- 26:34of life. Okay. What? What? What tree of
- 26:37life? The one that was in the Garden of
- 26:39Eden. All right. Wisdom offers you a way
- 26:43to have knowledge of good and evil, but
- 26:46not take it in sin, but receive it,
- 26:50which means I'm not forfeiting my
- 26:52ability to access the tree of life,
- 26:54which God has for all of those who
- 26:56actually obey him, who have trusted in
- 26:59the shed blood of Jesus. And that is
- 27:01timelessly true. It's true when Solomon
- 27:04wrote these words and it's true today
- 27:06that God wants you to get back to your
- 27:08original design which is found in the
- 27:11Garden of Eden. The garden where people
- 27:14flourish. All right, tomorrow is day
- 27:17303.
- 27:18We're going to be looking at Proverbs
- 27:20chapters 4-6.
- 27:22I can't wait. Some of my favorite verses
- 27:24in the Bible are in Proverbs chapters
