- 0:24Family, WELCOME TO DAY 30. WE'RE AT THE
- 0:27END OF THE BOOK OF PSALMS. COME ON. UM,
- 0:30THAT MAY BE BITTERSWEET. It's
- 0:31bittersweet for me. We've been in Psalms
- 0:33for like 50 something days. I have
- 0:36fallen in love with the book of Psalms.
- 0:38Honestly, I I will say I THINK THAT
- 0:41BEFORE RECORDING ALL THESE EPISODES WITH
- 0:43THE BIBLE DEPARTMENT. I liked individual
- 0:46Psalms, but I don't know that I liked
- 0:48the entire book as a whole. I can
- 0:50honestly say on the other end now, you
- 0:53know, recording day 301, having studied
- 0:56for every single day that I've have a
- 0:58newfound, personally, I have a newfound
- 1:01appreciation for the whole book of
- 1:03Psalms. And hopefully by the end of
- 1:05today's episode and today's reading, you
- 1:08will as well. So, I hope I hope and pray
- 1:12that you've enjoyed our trek through the
- 1:14book of Psalms. This is the biggest like
- 1:17longest book of the Bible that we will
- 1:19study on this uh podcast journey. So,
- 1:22I'm glad that you stuck it out. Good job
- 1:26making it through Psalms. If you can
- 1:27make it through Psalms, you can make it
- 1:28through anything. So, I'm super super
- 1:30excited. Hey, like I say every day, if
- 1:33you have not done the reading for the
- 1:35day, stop the video, pause the audio, go
- 1:38get the reading done. All right. Today,
- 1:39we've got Psalms 149 and 150. just two
- 1:44Psalms to end the entire book of Psalms
- 1:47and then TOMORROW WE'LL CRACK OPEN
- 1:49PROVERBS. OKAY, we'll go from David to
- 1:52Solomon. So, uh I'm super pumped about
- 1:55Proverbs, but let's not get ahead of
- 1:56ourselves. Let's go out with a bang.
- 1:59Okay, let's let's uh let's run the race.
- 2:02Let's finish. Okay, let's get Psalms
- 2:05done. All right, context clues. Okay,
- 2:08just two bits of context. Okay, Psalm
- 2:10149 naturally flows out of Psalm 148.
- 2:15Okay, the big idea for Psalm 148 is that
- 2:19everything is going to praise the Lord.
- 2:21Okay, if you remember Psalm 148, right,
- 2:25there was this tiered journey of
- 2:27everything that was going to praise the
- 2:28Lord. Verses 1-4, okay, the heavens
- 2:31praised the Lord and then verses 7-10,
- 2:34the earth praised the Lord. And then
- 2:36verses 11 through 12, humanity praise
- 2:39the Lord. And this is supposed to set us
- 2:42up to to want us to go, wait, wait,
- 2:45wait, wait, what about Israel? Is Israel
- 2:48ever going to praise the Lord? And
- 2:49that's where Psalm 149 comes into play.
- 2:52We can read it right here in verse one.
- 2:54Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise
- 2:57in the assembly of his faithful people.
- 3:01And we're going to look at the words
- 3:03faithful people for one of our nerdy
- 3:04nuggets when we dive into our nerdy
- 3:06nuggets. So the the context for Israel
- 3:11having a psalm where the nation, God's
- 3:15faithful people can offer up praise to
- 3:18him comes out of Psalm 148. Because in
- 3:21Psalm 148, everything is praising the
- 3:24Lord. And it should kind of get you on
- 3:26the edge of your seat like, wait a
- 3:28second, if everything's praising God,
- 3:30why isn't Israel praising God? Well,
- 3:32that leads us directly into Psalm 149
- 3:34where Israel does praise the Lord. And
- 3:36then Psalm 150 closes out all of it. And
- 3:39we'll really dive into Psalm 150 when we
- 3:41get to our nerdy nuggets. And honestly,
- 3:43no need to wait. No need to WAIT FOR THE
- 3:45NUGGETS. LET'S GO. LET'S DIVE into our
- 3:47nerdy nuggets. Okay, I got a lot for
- 3:48you. First, Psalm 149:1 says this, "Sing
- 3:52to the Lord a new song." That's a good
- 3:55verse right there. A new song. Sing to
- 3:57the Lord a new song. You want to know
- 3:59what I've had to say to a worship leader
- 4:01a time or two? Hey guys, let's sing a
- 4:04new song. I don't know if you realize
- 4:06this, but songs are attached to seasons,
- 4:08right? I don't know. I don't know if
- 4:09you've ever realized this that like
- 4:11there's a season where like a song, it's
- 4:14almost like God releases songs from
- 4:16heaven that he wants us to declare on
- 4:18the earth. And so songs aren't timeless.
- 4:22Like songs have seasons and there are
- 4:25times where a song has the power to
- 4:28create an anointed atmosphere like in a
- 4:31room or in a sanctuary or across a
- 4:34nation, right? And then you ever get to
- 4:36a point where a song that used to just
- 4:38like HIT DOESN'T HIT ANYMORE. THAT'S NOT
- 4:41JUST BECAUSE YOU GOT tired of singing
- 4:43it. That's because I do think songs have
- 4:45a shelf life. And right here we get this
- 4:48phrase, a new song. Sing to the Lord a
- 4:51new song. Number one, I just want to
- 4:54tell you, your pastor is not just being
- 4:56annoying by asking you to sing new
- 4:58songs. Actually, God wants a new song.
- 5:02Okay? God's a God of creativity. He
- 5:04wants a new song. I don't know if you've
- 5:06ever been a worship leader who like
- 5:07you're introducing a new song to the
- 5:09congregation on that first Sunday and
- 5:11everybody's just kind OF LIKE, "AH, SING
- 5:13OLD STUFF." It's kind of like you can't
- 5:15please everybody, right? Sometimes it's
- 5:16like we're tired of old songs and then
- 5:19we want the old songs. I get it. But
- 5:21this is a tension that we're all gonna
- 5:23have to deal with all the time of
- 5:26realizing that part of leading God's
- 5:29people into worship is prophetic. And
- 5:31what you have to prophetically discern
- 5:33is like, "All right, when is it time for
- 5:36the old faithful songs? And when is it
- 5:38time for a new song? When is it time to
- 5:40introduce a new song?" But God wants a
- 5:43new song. Also, I'll say this that each
- 5:47person's testimony is a new song. That
- 5:49the life book, the himynel. I I want my
- 5:52life to be a himnil. I want to say,
- 5:55Lord, I I may not be able to offer you a
- 5:57new literal song, but I can offer you a
- 6:00new metaphorical song because there's
- 6:02always new things that you're doing in
- 6:03my life. So, a new song, a new song. I
- 6:07always want to have a new song on my
- 6:09heart. I always want to have a new song
- 6:12on my lips. I I think that that's a good
- 6:14thing. I I think it keeps a church fresh
- 6:18and relevant, but I also think it
- 6:20ministers to the Lord, okay, to offer
- 6:23him a new song, okay? So, that language
- 6:26that's not just the worship leader
- 6:28wanting to be creative or the pastor
- 6:30being picky. No, that's like biblical
- 6:32language. I think it's good. Sing to the
- 6:34Lord a new song, his praise in the
- 6:37assembly of his faithful people. One of
- 6:40the repeated verses or repeated words
- 6:42that we're going to get in Psalm 149 is
- 6:44that phrase right there, faithful
- 6:46people. Faithful people. You'll see it
- 6:48right there in verse one. But then
- 6:49you're going to see it again in verse 9.
- 6:53It's going to say to carry out the
- 6:54sentence written against them. This is
- 6:56the glory of all his faithful people.
- 6:59But then we're going to get it in the
- 7:00middle of the psalm in verse 5. Let his
- 7:03faithful people rejoice in this honor
- 7:06and sing for joy in their on their beds.
- 7:09So, three times in this psalm, we're
- 7:11going to get faithful people. Faithful
- 7:12people, faithful people. And what IS THE
- 7:14NUMBER ONE THING THAT ISRAEL STRUGGLES
- 7:17WITH? YOU GUESSED IT, BEING UNFAITHFUL
- 7:19TO YAHWEH. THAT'S WHAT GETS THEM EXILED
- 7:21OUT of the land is being unfaithful to
- 7:23Yahweh. AND HOW WOULD WE DESCRIBE GOD?
- 7:26FAITHFUL. That's right. So, the people
- 7:29are kind of marked as unfaithful. And
- 7:31Yahweh is faithful. And so, what does
- 7:33this song do? It calls the people based
- 7:36on their identity, not their behavior.
- 7:39If you call someone faithful, even when
- 7:42they're not being faithful, guess what
- 7:43it'll do? It'll force them to be
- 7:45faithful. You know, as a senior pastor,
- 7:48guess what I do? Every time I stand up
- 7:50before our people, I thank them for
- 7:52their generosity. Well, guess what? I
- 7:54know the numbers. I know that they're
- 7:55not all generous, but I don't call
- 7:58stingy people stingy because then
- 8:00they'll just continue to be stingy. me
- 8:02as a leader, I've got to prophesy that
- 8:04they're generous. Got to speak it into
- 8:07existence. And so Psalm 149 is calling
- 8:10very unfaithful people faithful people,
- 8:13which is just good old Bible. And here's
- 8:15what worship is designed to do. Worship
- 8:18uh is designed so that what you behold
- 8:21becomes what you become. Whatever you
- 8:23behold is what you become. And in
- 8:25worship, you're beholding the Lord and
- 8:28he's faithful. And so the reason that
- 8:30this the music or the song or the psalm
- 8:33here saying the people are faithful, the
- 8:35people are faithful. The people are
- 8:37faithful is because if they continue to
- 8:39behold the one that is faithful, they'll
- 8:42become faithful. But if they continue to
- 8:44behold their own lack of faithfulness,
- 8:46then they'll never be faithful. It's
- 8:48funny. I almost literally last night
- 8:51almost teared up. One of my like I mean
- 8:54closest close someone that I've
- 8:56discipled for a long time text me. His
- 8:58name is Jesse Summers. He text me. He
- 9:01said, "Um, I just want you to know like
- 9:04I try my best to lead like you." He
- 9:06said, "When you first met me, I wasn't a
- 9:08leader, but you called me one anyway."
- 9:11Said, "You were actually the first
- 9:12person to really call me a leader."
- 9:13Like, you just you just spoke it into
- 9:16existence. And uh you know what? I think
- 9:19that's what we're called to do. I think
- 9:20that we're called to look at people who
- 9:22go astray and say, "You're faithful."
- 9:25We're called to look at people who are
- 9:26STINGY AND SAY, "YOU'RE GENEROUS. We're
- 9:29called to look at people who are weak
- 9:32and tell them that they're strong." And
- 9:34I think our music should definitely be
- 9:36doing that. Our music should reflect the
- 9:38identity that we want people to have
- 9:40because again, whatever you behold,
- 9:42you'll become. And that's just a law of
- 9:45life, but that's also a law of worship.
- 9:48All right, let's keep moving, family.
- 9:50The wait is over. for my brand new book,
- 9:52Crushing Chaos, is out now and available
- 9:56everywhere books are sold literally
- 10:00today. I walked into a Barnes & Noble
- 10:02and I signed a bunch of copies at a
- 10:04physical location. So, you can grab this
- 10:07book at a physical Barnes & Noble or you
- 10:10can go to a Books a Million or Amazon or
- 10:13anywhere books are sold and grab a copy.
- 10:16If you enjoy reading the Bible from an
- 10:19ancient perspective, [music] if you
- 10:21understand that the beauty of scripture
- 10:23is actually knowing it in context, then
- 10:26you'll love this book. And if there's
- 10:28any chaos in your personal life, I
- 10:30[music] think that reading the Bible
- 10:32from an ancient perspective can actually
- 10:34help to crush the chaos in your life. I
- 10:37think this book is going to be a New
- 10:38York Times bestseller. I really do. I
- 10:41think we wrote a good one. I think you
- 10:43should get a copy today. All right, back
- 10:46to the episode. One other nerdy nugget
- 10:48that I want to dig out is that Ezra is
- 10:52the one who's writing Psalm 149 and 150.
- 10:55And Ezra is definitely using David as a
- 10:59hero from Israel's history that the
- 11:02people can and should emulate. So we got
- 11:05to know in order to interpret you know
- 11:09any Bible verse or verses we have to
- 11:12know the agenda of the author. What is
- 11:15the agenda? Well the agenda is that Ezra
- 11:18is dealing with some unfaithful people.
- 11:20And Ezra is trying to get the people to
- 11:23be faithful. And so he's using David as
- 11:27a figurehead from Israel's history. And
- 11:29so a lot of this like prioritization
- 11:33on David as a character is definitely
- 11:36something that Ezra is doing. Okay. Now,
- 11:39one of the things that I want to show
- 11:40you with Psalm 150 are what I call the
- 11:43seams that prove the Bible has been
- 11:47woven together. Okay. Tim Mackey says
- 11:49this a lot, that the Bible is a quilt.
- 11:52And you know how quilts work. There's
- 11:54these, let's say you make a quilt out of
- 11:56like individual shirts or something,
- 11:59okay? You've got all these individual
- 12:01squares and you take all the squares and
- 12:03you have to actually weave them together
- 12:06into one big quilt. Okay, a quilt is
- 12:10many pieces that get turned into one
- 12:12thing. And the Bible is that way. But
- 12:15you don't realize the Bible is like that
- 12:18until you look at the seams. The seams
- 12:20actually begin to show you, oh, no, no,
- 12:22no. this and this have been woven
- 12:25together. So, I'll kind of show you,
- 12:27we'll pull the veil back and I'll show
- 12:30you some seams throughout the book of
- 12:32Psalms. Okay? So, if you kind of wanted
- 12:35to know how do we know that Ezra edited
- 12:38all this together, you know? Well, I'll
- 12:40I'll show you the scene that closes book
- 12:43one, the scene that closes book two, the
- 12:46scene that closes book three, the scene
- 12:48that closes book four, and then Psalm
- 12:51150, which is the final scene that
- 12:53closes book five. Okay, let's look at
- 12:55this. Okay, remember book one of the of
- 12:58the Psalms is uh from Psalm 1 all the
- 13:01way to Psalm 41. So, let's look at Psalm
- 13:0441:3
- 13:06uh 13, sorry. Psalm 41:13. It says this,
- 13:11"Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,
- 13:13from everlasting to everlasting. Amen."
- 13:16And amen. How do we know that that's a
- 13:17scene? Well, we realize that that's not
- 13:21original to that psalm. That was added
- 13:25to that psalm by Ezra, the editor. Once
- 13:29you look at the seam that close out book
- 13:31two, here it is. Psalm 72:1 19 says
- 13:35this, "Blessed be his glorious name
- 13:38forever. May the whole earth be filled
- 13:40with his glory. Amen and amen." Did you
- 13:43see it? Let's look at Psalm 41:13 again.
- 13:46Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,
- 13:48from everlasting to everlasting. Amen
- 13:50and amen. Then Psalm 72:1 19. Blessed be
- 13:54his glorious name forever. May the whole
- 13:57earth be filled with his glory. Amen.
- 14:00And amen. Now, let's look at the scene
- 14:02that ends book three. This is Psalm
- 14:0389:52. Says this, "Blessed be Yahweh
- 14:08forever." Amen and amen. See, these
- 14:11aren't original to the actual Psalms.
- 14:14These were added to close the books.
- 14:17Okay? And then book five says this.
- 14:19Psalm 106:48
- 14:22says, "And let all the people say,
- 14:25"Amen. Praise Yahweh. You see, we get
- 14:28blessed be Yahweh. Amen and amen.
- 14:30Blessed be his glorious name forever.
- 14:32Amen and amen. Blessed be Yahweh
- 14:33forever. Amen and amen. And let all the
- 14:36people say amen. Praise Yahweh. And then
- 14:40how do all those seams culminate into
- 14:43the final scene? Well, it culminates in
- 14:45a Psalm 150. Praise God in his
- 14:48sanctuary. Praise him in his mighty
- 14:51heavens. Praise him for his acts of
- 14:53power. Praise him for his surpassing
- 14:56greatness. Praise him with the sounding
- 14:58of the trumpet. Praise him with the harp
- 15:00and liar. Praise him with timberland
- 15:03dancing. Praise him with the strings and
- 15:06pipe. Praise him with the clash of
- 15:08symbols. Praise him with resounding
- 15:10symbols. Let everything that has breath
- 15:13praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. That
- 15:17is how the final hal closes. And that is
- 15:21the last scene that we have for the
- 15:23Hebrew Bible. This right here, these
- 15:26seams are actually the number one proof
- 15:29that these psalms have been edited and
- 15:32intentionally woven together. And they
- 15:35all culminate with Psalm 150. So what's
- 15:38the point of the Psalms? To get
- 15:40everybody to praise the Lord, to praise
- 15:43him, to to sing about him, to dance
- 15:45about him, to celebrate him, to honor
- 15:47him. Praise. It's funny. I told our team
- 15:50today, we're, you know, we're planning
- 15:52uh launch Sunday at our brand new church
- 15:55plant, the garden. We are planning
- 15:58worship and planning services. And I
- 16:01said said, "You know what, guys? One of
- 16:02the things I learned just through
- 16:04studying the Psalms and then looking at
- 16:07chronicles and like just looking at the
- 16:10history of how David revolutionized
- 16:13worship for the nation of Israel is he
- 16:16had musicians and choirs at the temple
- 16:20at the tabernacle day and night. Like
- 16:22you don't think there was a cost
- 16:23associated to that? Like that's
- 16:25expensive, man. And I said to the team,
- 16:28I said,"I never going to apologize for
- 16:32how much I know it's going to cost for
- 16:35us to offer great praise to God." And
- 16:37I'm not saying praise has to be
- 16:40expensive. But what I am saying is that
- 16:42musicians and choirs and like that that
- 16:46that takes production like like it's a
- 16:49resource whether you like it or not. You
- 16:53know, there is no such thing as cheap
- 16:56sacrifices to the Lord. Like actually,
- 16:59all throughout the Bible, God says, "If
- 17:02an animal's blemished or broken or
- 17:04bruised, like don't offer that to me."
- 17:06Like, no, no, no. We offer God our best.
- 17:08We offer him a new song. We offer him
- 17:11our lives. Like, we offer him stuff
- 17:13that's worthy of his great name. And
- 17:16[snorts] let everything that has breath
- 17:18praise the Lord. It's almost like Psalm
- 17:21150 isn't just a commissioning. It is
- 17:25the activity that all
- 17:28149 previous psalms lead us to do. Like
- 17:31Psalm 150 is Psalms in action. That's
- 17:35what it is. What is the book of Psalms
- 17:37supposed to get you to do? Praise the
- 17:39Lord. What is Psalms from Psalm 150
- 17:42supposed to do? Get you to praise God in
- 17:45his sanctuary. It's supposed to get you
- 17:46to praise God in in his mighty heavens.
- 17:49is supposed to get you to praise God for
- 17:51his acts of power. It's supposed to get
- 17:53you to praise him for his surpassing
- 17:55greatness. All of the Psalms from 1 to
- 17:58150 are supposed to get you and me and
- 18:00all of us to praise him with the
- 18:03sounding of the trumpet, praise him with
- 18:05the harp and liar, praise him with the
- 18:07timberal and dancing. It's supposed to
- 18:09get us to praise him with the strings in
- 18:11the pipe, to praise him with the clash
- 18:13of symbols, to praise him with
- 18:15resounding symbols, to let everything
- 18:19that has his breath, praise the Lord.
- 18:22Praise the Lord. So my challenge to you
- 18:26is to live a life of praise. Praise
- 18:28isn't quiet. Praise isn't private. No,
- 18:32praise is pretty public. Praise involves
- 18:34other people. Praise is corporate.
- 18:37Praise is excellent. Praise is skillful.
- 18:41Praise is emotional. Praise is
- 18:45expressive.
- 18:46Praise to praise. If you ever want to
- 18:49see praise, just go watch a football
- 18:51game, man. People are praising. You see
- 18:53a a stadium of 30, 40,000 people and
- 18:56they're doing the wave, that's praise,
- 18:58man. You see how people rush a field
- 19:01after their team has won a victory,
- 19:03that's praise, man. It involves your
- 19:06whole body. It involves music. It
- 19:09involves all kinds of stuff. It may
- 19:10involve painting your whole face and
- 19:12belly blue. It's praise. It's what we're
- 19:16designed to do. And if church leaders
- 19:18don't direct people's energy towards
- 19:21praising Yahweh, they'll praise all
- 19:23kinds of things. They'll praise the
- 19:25Republican party or Democratic party.
- 19:27They'll praise their favorite football
- 19:28team. They'll praise everything but the
- 19:31one who gave them breath. What the end
- 19:33of this psalm is saying is, well, how
- 19:34about we return our breath to the one
- 19:38who gave it to us. Let everything that
- 19:40has breath praise the Lord. And that
- 19:43that's what the book of Psalms is all
- 19:44about. So what's our timeless truth
- 19:47today? To go and praise God. To praise
- 19:51him with everything that we got. To
- 19:53praise him with all of our might, with
- 19:55all of our power, with all of our
- 19:56strength. To worship the Lord. And that
- 19:59worship will eventually become the kind
- 20:01of warfare that begins to tear the
- 20:04strongholds of the enemy down. Because
- 20:05that's what Psalm 149 is actually all
- 20:08about. Says this in verse 6, "May the
- 20:10praise of God be in their mouths, a
- 20:13double-edged sword in their hands." That
- 20:15when we praise God out of our mouth, we
- 20:18have a double-edged sword in our hand.
- 20:20The goal of praise is to offer something
- 20:22to the Lord that activates his power to
- 20:26destroy every stronghold of the enemy
- 20:28because worship ultimately is warfare.
- 20:32That's not just true for Ezra or David.
- 20:35That's not just true for the historical
- 20:37moment of Psalm 149 and 150. That's true
- 20:41for you and that's true for me. I knew
- 20:43that when I got to Houston to plant a
- 20:45church that there were some spiritual
- 20:49forces of wickedness that had been set
- 20:51up in this city as a stronghold to the
- 20:54plan of God. And part of what I knew
- 20:56needed to happen is that we needed to
- 20:58offer up praise to God so that God will
- 21:01begin to destroy the proverbial walls of
- 21:05Jericho that were keeping Houstononians
- 21:08bound and trapped because worship is
- 21:12warfare. So the legacy or the lesson
- 21:16that Psalm wants us to learn is to
- 21:19praise God with everything we got
- 21:21because man, at the end of the day,
- 21:23guess what we're going to do for
- 21:24eternity? Praise God. So, you may as
- 21:26well fall in love with doing it down
- 21:28here. Family, THAT'S THE BOOK OF PSALMS.
