- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking
- 0:08through the entire Bible in a year. You
- 0:10can go to the description or the bible
- 0:13department.com to download a reading
- 0:15plan and join the journey
- 0:24family. Welcome to day 299 here at the
- 0:28Bible department. Today we get to wave
- 0:30bye-bye to our beloved King David, which
- 0:33is honestly pretty sad. I've kind of
- 0:35fallen in love with David as we have
- 0:38studied the Psalms together. But we get
- 0:40to wave by because these four Psalms,
- 0:43Psalm 142, 143, 144, and 145 are the
- 0:49final four Psalms of David that we've
- 0:52got, bringing our total number of Psalms
- 0:54that David contributed to the book of
- 0:56Psalms to 73. 73 Psalms. And I don't
- 1:00know about you, but sometimes when I
- 1:02read through 1 and 2 Samuel and I hear
- 1:06about all of the, might I say,
- 1:10questionable things that David did, you
- 1:13kind of can when you just look at a
- 1:15historical account of David's life,
- 1:17maybe come away from the scriptures
- 1:20going, I don't know about that guy. But
- 1:22then you read the Psalms and you're
- 1:24like, I quite love that guy. That guy's
- 1:28passionate. He's amazing. He loves the
- 1:31Lord. And I think that honestly probably
- 1:34is what the scriptures are designed to
- 1:35do. They're they're designed to help us
- 1:37to fill in the gray, right? My son is
- 1:39four years old, and for my son, there
- 1:41are only good guys and bad guys. But
- 1:44what the Bible is actually doing is
- 1:46helping us to understand that there's a
- 1:48lot of bad in good people and there's a
- 1:52good amount of good in bad people. that
- 1:55people don't neatly or nicely fit into
- 1:58categories of good people and bad
- 2:00people. But there's way more than 50
- 2:03shades of gray in the middle. And I know
- 2:05that may make you feel uncomfortable.
- 2:07That makes me feel uncomfortable. But my
- 2:09honest just I don't know my honest
- 2:13conclusion after reading Psalms about
- 2:15David at least is love that guy. What a
- 2:19good guy. Anyway, today unfortunately we
- 2:22get to say goodbye to David. If you have
- 2:24not done the reading, this is a good
- 2:26time for you to stop this video, pause
- 2:28the audio, and go get the reading done.
- 2:31We got four psalms that we are diving
- 2:33into today. Honestly, I think these
- 2:35psalms are incredible. Let me give you
- 2:38some context clues for the four psalms
- 2:40that were assigned to us on our Bible
- 2:42reading plans today. For Psalm 142, 143,
- 2:46144, and 145, these are all written by
- 2:49David. Okay? Both Psalm 142 and Psalm
- 2:54143 are going to be individual laments.
- 2:58Okay? So, you already you've you've been
- 3:00rocking. We've been rocking together for
- 3:02a long time. You know exactly how an
- 3:03individual lament works. It's one person
- 3:07who has a plea, a complaint, an issue
- 3:12that's happening in their life. Okay.
- 3:13The context around Psalm 142 is actually
- 3:16debated. Okay. You're going to get we're
- 3:18gonna we're both we're all going to get
- 3:20this little heading at the top of 142
- 3:23that says a mascul of David when he was
- 3:26in the cave of prayer. Now there are two
- 3:29moments that could serve as context for
- 3:31Psalm 142. Two moments where David was
- 3:34in a cave. Okay, I'll give you both
- 3:36options. It's either 1st Samuel chapter
- 3:3822 or 1st Samuel chapter 24. Okay, 1st
- 3:42Samuel chapter 22 or 1st Samuel chapter
- 3:4524. It is either just after David
- 3:48escaped from the Philistines by
- 3:50pretending to be insane or pretending to
- 3:52be mad and he hid in the cave of
- 3:54Adullum. That's 1st Samuel chapter 22.
- 3:57Or in 1st Samuel chapter 24 when after
- 4:00Saul had broken off his pursuit of David
- 4:03to deal with the Philistines that he
- 4:05returned to chasing David and then just
- 4:08so happened to go to relieve himself in
- 4:10the very cave David was hiding in. So
- 4:14either way, the context of this psalm is
- 4:17once again David for no fault of his own
- 4:20being haunted like an animal by his
- 4:23envious king and that would be none
- 4:25other than King Saul. Okay, so uh that's
- 4:28Psalm 142. Psalm 143 is another
- 4:31individual met. Okay, and then Psalm 144
- 4:35is essentially going to be a new song.
- 4:37We're going to see that verbiage, a new
- 4:38song with lots of old material. Okay.
- 4:41So, Psalm 144 is actually going to
- 4:45contain tons of material from older
- 4:48Psalms. Okay. So, we're going to kind of
- 4:51get a remixed Psalm. Okay. David is
- 4:54going to take elements from other areas
- 4:56or other psalms that he had written.
- 4:58They're going to get reworked into Psalm
- 5:00144. Okay. And then last, Psalm 145 is
- 5:04our final Psalm of David. Okay. In the
- 5:09entire book of Psalms. This is the 73rd
- 5:12Psalm attributed to King David and the
- 5:15very very very very last one that we
- 5:18will study together. All right, so
- 5:21that's as much context as I have for
- 5:22you. The Psalms are always a little
- 5:25light on the context and heavy on the
- 5:28nerdy nuggets and the timeless truths.
- 5:30So with no further ado, let's get into
- 5:32some nerdy nuggets. I hope you got your
- 5:34Bibles. We're going to go to Psalm 142.
- 5:38Family, the wait is over. My brand new
- 5:41book, Crushing Chaos, is out now and
- 5:44available everywhere books are sold
- 5:47literally today. I walked into a Barnes
- 5:50& Noble and I signed a bunch of copies
- 5:53at a physical location. So, you can grab
- 5:55this book at a physical Barnes & Noble
- 5:58or you can go to a Books a Million or
- 6:00Amazon or anywhere books are sold and
- 6:03grab a copy. If you enjoy reading the
- 6:06Bible from an ancient perspective, if
- 6:09you understand that the beauty of
- 6:11scripture is actually knowing it in
- 6:13context, then you'll love this book. And
- 6:16if there's any chaos in your personal
- 6:18life, I think that reading the Bible
- 6:21from an ancient perspective can actually
- 6:23help to crush the chaos in your life. I
- 6:26think this book is going to be a New
- 6:27York Times bestseller. I really do. I
- 6:29think we wrote a good one. I think you
- 6:31should get a copy today. All right, back
- 6:34to the episode. Psalm 142 says this.
- 6:37This is an individual lament, so these
- 6:38words are not going to shock you. I cry
- 6:40aloud to the Lord. That's right. Of
- 6:43course, you're crying. It's a lament.
- 6:44Okay? I cry aloud to the Lord. I lifted
- 6:47up my voice to the Lord for mercy. I
- 6:50pour out before my complaint. Before him
- 6:54I tell my trouble. Okay, just verses one
- 6:58and two should tell you this is a
- 6:59lament, right? We've got crying. We've
- 7:02got pouring out. We've got complaints.
- 7:04We've got trouble. Okay, this is a
- 7:07classic individual lament. Then I want
- 7:10you to drop to the end of verse four. It
- 7:12says this, "I have no refuge. No one
- 7:15cares for my life." I want you to study
- 7:18those words. I have no refuge. I have no
- 7:22refuge. No one cares for my life. And
- 7:25then verse five, I cry to you, Lord. I
- 7:28say you are my refuge, my portion in the
- 7:33land of the living. I wonder if you can
- 7:35see that justosition from the end of
- 7:37verse four to verse 5. Verse four, here
- 7:41are the words, I have no refuge. Then we
- 7:44get into THE VERY NEXT VERSE and the
- 7:47words are Lord Yahweh you are my refuge.
- 7:52Man, just that juxosition. I wonder
- 7:55what's going on in David's mind, right?
- 7:57He realizes he's complaining. He's
- 7:59lamenting. You know, he's got trouble.
- 8:02This is wrong. This is wrong. This is
- 8:04wrong. And he gets all the way down to
- 8:05the end of verse four and he says, "I
- 8:07have no refuge." It's like, "I have no
- 8:09defense. I have no safe place to go. I
- 8:12have no refuge." And then it's almost
- 8:14like a light bulb goes off. In verse 5,
- 8:17he goes, "Lord, you are my refuge." And
- 8:22I think that could be a model for you
- 8:23and I. I don't want to get into a
- 8:25timeless truth necessarily, but whatever
- 8:27you feel like you have none of at the
- 8:29moment. I have no patience. I have no
- 8:31money. I have no friends. I have no
- 8:34words. Whatever that is, I I want to
- 8:37challenge you to then transition into
- 8:39verse five. Okay? So, maybe you're
- 8:42saying right now, I have no peace. I
- 8:44want you to transition and go, the Lord
- 8:46is my peace. Lord, you are my peace. I
- 8:50have no words. Lord, you are my words. I
- 8:53have no money. Lord, you are my
- 8:56provision. Whatever you have none of, at
- 8:58some point you have to realize the Lord
- 9:01is that thing. The Lord a lot of times
- 9:05becomes the thing that you have none of
- 9:07in your own power and in your own
- 9:09strength. That's exactly what we see as
- 9:12we transition from verse 4 to verse 5
- 9:14here in Psalm 142. But there's a nerdy
- 9:17nugget that I could pull out of this.
- 9:19Guess it's pretty devotional in nature.
- 9:22It's whatever you feel like you have
- 9:23none of. I have no resources, you know.
- 9:26I have no self-control. I have no blank.
- 9:30Whatever that fill in the blank is, I
- 9:31want you to actually begin to confess.
- 9:34Not the opposite that you do have it,
- 9:37but confess, well, no, the Lord is going
- 9:40to supply that. And he already is that.
- 9:43He's the I am that I am. And the same
- 9:45God that can be peace for one person and
- 9:47provision for another can be
- 9:49self-control for me. Lord, I may not
- 9:52have blank. I may not have refuge, but I
- 9:55have you. And if I have you, then I do
- 9:58have refuge. And training your mind to
- 10:01think that way. We live in a society
- 10:03that will always agree that you have no
- 10:07power or you have no influence or you
- 10:10have no resources or you have no joy,
- 10:14whatever, you know, whatever that fill
- 10:16in the blank is for you. I have no
- 10:19blank. But actually a biblical worldview
- 10:21then challenges you and says, "Do you
- 10:23have the Lord? Do you have Yahweh? Do
- 10:25you have God? Because if you have the
- 10:27Lord, then the Lord is your joy and the
- 10:31Lord is your power and the Lord is your
- 10:34whatever that thing is that you think
- 10:36you don't have." It's my nerdy nugget
- 10:38for Psalm 142. Okay. Uh let's keep
- 10:40going. Let's read Psalm 143 in verse 4
- 10:45says this. This is another individual
- 10:47lament. Okay. So, you know, bad news,
- 10:49sad news, you know, it's it's it's
- 10:51venting, it's complaining, you know,
- 10:53it's teeters on the negative side, but
- 10:57even in the negativity, like David
- 10:59always shows us how to navigate our
- 11:02negative emotions to get to a place of
- 11:04faith. So, here's what it says. Psalm
- 11:06143, we're going to read verse four. So,
- 11:09my spirit grows faint within me. I
- 11:12circled that word faint when I was
- 11:14reading. Grows faint within me. My heart
- 11:18within me is dismayed. So my emotional
- 11:21state is faint and dismayed, broken,
- 11:25downhearted, you know, whatever. It's
- 11:26all under the banner of faint. Like I'm
- 11:29fainting. Like, can you imagine being so
- 11:31overwhelmed that you're at the point of
- 11:33fainting? Like I'm fainting with
- 11:35exhaustion. I'm fainting with just
- 11:37feelings of overwhelmedness.
- 11:41And then we actually get a sense clue as
- 11:44to why there's fainting. And I I want to
- 11:47ask the same question to you cuz I think
- 11:49this is where we get to. This is what
- 11:50David wants us to get to. It says this.
- 11:53Uh so my spirit grows faint within me.
- 11:55My heart within me is dismayed. Verse 5,
- 11:58I remember the days of long ago. I
- 12:01meditate on all your works and consider
- 12:04what your hands have done. I remember. I
- 12:06meditate. I consider. By the way, this
- 12:08is how Hebrew poetry works. It's not
- 12:11that the words rhyme. It's that the
- 12:12concepts rhyme. The ideas rhyme. Okay?
- 12:15So remember, meditate, and consider are
- 12:18all the same idea. And I just want you
- 12:21to get this one idea into your head,
- 12:23this one concept into your head. Maybe
- 12:25you're fainting because you're
- 12:27forgetting. Maybe you're fainting
- 12:29because you're forgetting. Cuz
- 12:30immediately David realizes, ah, my
- 12:33spirit grows faint within me. And then
- 12:35he then verse five, realize the issue.
- 12:38Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let me remember. I
- 12:41need to remember the days of long ago. I
- 12:43need to meditate on Yahweh's works. I
- 12:46need to consider what his hands have
- 12:48done. I could consider and meditate my
- 12:52problem. Or I could consider and
- 12:55meditate all the things that God's done.
- 12:58But that's going to require me going
- 12:59back into my memory bank and remembering
- 13:03how faithful God's been. And if I do a
- 13:06good job of remembering, guess what? I
- 13:08won't fall into fainting because of
- 13:12forgetting. I'm fainting. I'm weak. I'm
- 13:15weary. I'm overwhelmed. Because really,
- 13:17I keep on forgetting. And all of us have
- 13:21spiritual amnesia from time to time. WE
- 13:24JUST FORGET. WE FORGET HOW FAITHFUL
- 13:25GOD'S BEEN. WE FORGET HOW AWESOME he's
- 13:28been. We forget that this isn't the your
- 13:31first rodeo. Like, this isn't your first
- 13:33time facing a giant. It's not your first
- 13:35time marching around a wall. This is not
- 13:36your first time, you know, believing God
- 13:39for big things. It's not your first
- 13:40time. I'm a preacher myself and I'm in
- 13:42the middle of planting a church right
- 13:43now and I got to remember, wait, wait.
- 13:45If if the same God who got me and my
- 13:48wife miraculously pregnant with our son
- 13:50is the same God that called us to plant
- 13:52a church, man, what am I stressed out
- 13:55about? Why am I stressed? I'm preaching
- 13:57to the choir. All right, I'm on it. The
- 13:59same God who called me to start Arma
- 14:02Studios with multiple employees now in
- 14:05my garage in the middle of a pandemic.
- 14:08has called me to plant A CHURCH, MAN.
- 14:11THE SAME GOD who led me through that is
- 14:14going to lead me through this. And there
- 14:16are times in the church planting process
- 14:19where I have felt overwhelmed. I have
- 14:21felt myself fainting. When I look at A
- 14:24NUMBER JUST A COUPLE DAYS AGO, you know,
- 14:27I realized, oh, we need HALF A MILLION.
- 14:31WOO! ALL RIGHT. I've never needed half a
- 14:33million dollars before, man. Well, guess
- 14:35what? The same God that provided $50,000
- 14:38when we needed cameras for the studio is
- 14:40going to provide $500,000.
- 14:43And when I remember what God has done,
- 14:46it gives me strength to not fate faint
- 14:50now that I'm at a different obstacle or
- 14:52a different wall. That is my nerdy
- 14:54nugget for Psalm 143. Let's look at
- 14:58Psalm 144. Okay, a lot of the material
- 15:01from Psalm 144 is taken from elsewhere.
- 15:04This is taken from earlier material.
- 15:06Psalm 144 really highlights the thing
- 15:09that makes David David. All right. Says
- 15:12this, "Praise be to the Lord, my rock,
- 15:14who trains my hands for war, my fingers
- 15:17for battle." David makes it clear. Hey,
- 15:20it's not my own training that makes me a
- 15:22good warrior. No, no, no. The Lord
- 15:25trains my hands for war. He trains my
- 15:28fingers for battle. All right. Then I
- 15:30want us to skip all the way down to
- 15:32verse 9. It says this. I will sing a new
- 15:35song to you, my God. On the 10 stringed
- 15:38glider, I will make music to you. To the
- 15:41one who gives victory to kings, who
- 15:44delivers his servant David from the
- 15:47deadly sword. Deliver me. Rescue me from
- 15:50the hands of foreigners, whose mouths
- 15:53are full of lies, whose right hands are
- 15:57deceitful. What does Saul just have an
- 16:00issue doing? Saul actually robs Yahweh
- 16:04of glory and praise. Whereas David,
- 16:06David wants to shower Yahweh with glory
- 16:11and praise. And you actually can begin
- 16:13to see the juxosition of a king who
- 16:16takes glory for himself versus David who
- 16:19gives glory to Yahweh. So Psalm 144 is a
- 16:25royal psalm, a messianic psalm. So, this
- 16:28royal psalm is designed to celebrate the
- 16:31victories of the king. And what does
- 16:33David the king say? As we're supposed to
- 16:36be celebrating his victories, he makes
- 16:39it less about himself and more about
- 16:42Yahweh, more about God. Okay? He sings,
- 16:45"NO, NO, WHOA. HEY, I'LL SING A NEW song
- 16:48to you. To Yahweh on the 10 string liar.
- 16:52I will make music to you cuz this
- 16:56victory is not simply mine because I was
- 16:59a brilliant military commander. No, no,
- 17:01no, no. You are the one that's brought
- 17:04us victory. Okay? You are the one who
- 17:07has protected your people. Psalm 145 is
- 17:13our last psalm of David. Can you believe
- 17:14it? This is the 73rd Psalm that David
- 17:18attributes is is attributed to him that
- 17:20we have in the collection of the Psalms.
- 17:23By the time we pick up tomorrow, we will
- 17:26be looking at Psalm 146, which is uh
- 17:31actually written by our good friend
- 17:33Ezra. All right, so today's it. Okay, we
- 17:36get to wave. We not get to. I mean, we
- 17:39have to. It's kind of like we I I at
- 17:41least am begrudgingly waving goodbye to
- 17:45David. And so we get to Psalm 145. This
- 17:48is the final hymn. Uh this is a full
- 17:50acrostic. Okay. Uh that means that every
- 17:53stanza is taken from a letter of the
- 17:56Hebrew alphabet. We have a full acrostic
- 17:59here, but we're missing one letter. So
- 18:02that's the nerdy nugget. And I would say
- 18:04that Psalm 145 is a summary. It's a
- 18:10wonderful summary of David's life of
- 18:11worship. Okay? For all his faults, David
- 18:14had one strength that was greater than
- 18:16any other character in the Old
- 18:18Testament. He was perhaps the greatest
- 18:21worshipper that ever existed. All right.
- 18:24So Psalm 145, I would say, is just a
- 18:28good legacy psalm for David. It says
- 18:31this starting in verse one, I will exalt
- 18:34you, my God the King. Oh, don't you love
- 18:37that? My God the King. King David is
- 18:41calling Yahweh the King. My God the
- 18:43King. I will praise your name forever
- 18:45and ever. Every day I will praise you
- 18:48and extol your name forever and ever.
- 18:52Every day. This is not something I just
- 18:54do when I'm in a good mood. This isn't
- 18:56every seven days like on Sunday at
- 18:59church. No, no, no. every single day.
- 19:01Okay. Great is the Lord most worthy of
- 19:03praise. His greatness no one can fathom.
- 19:06One generation commends your works to
- 19:08another. They tell of your mighty acts.
- 19:13So I just want to end our time together
- 19:17with a timeless truth that for David he
- 19:21wants one generation to commend the work
- 19:26or the name or the glory of the Lord to
- 19:29the next generation. It says this uh one
- 19:32generation commends your works to
- 19:34another. They tell of your mighty acts.
- 19:37Number one, that communicates to us that
- 19:40it's praise isn't just talking to God or
- 19:43singing about God, but it's telling
- 19:45other people about how great God is.
- 19:48Okay, that's also praise. It's bragging
- 19:50about God. It's telling other people the
- 19:53good things that God has done. But if
- 19:56there's a legacy that David leaves
- 19:58behind, it's that he wants the baton of
- 20:02worship to get passed from his
- 20:03generation to the next. It's funny. I
- 20:06was at a church recently that was really
- 20:07multigenerational, which by the way,
- 20:09multigenerational ministry is like the
- 20:11bomb. And uh I was asking the pastor,
- 20:14"How'd you get, you know, all the
- 20:16grandpas and grandmas to like stay in
- 20:17church?" You know, sometimes people can
- 20:19be so attached to like the color of the
- 20:22carpet or to singing hymns or to pews or
- 20:27to stained glass or whatever. And he
- 20:29said, "Well, I just challenged all the
- 20:31grandparents in our church." And I asked
- 20:33them, "Do you want your grandpa do you
- 20:35want your grandchildren to come to this
- 20:36church?" If you want your grandchildren
- 20:38to come to this church, then we're going
- 20:40to have to make some changes. And they'd
- 20:42rather their grandchildren have a legacy
- 20:46of worship versus a legacy of a style.
- 20:51And that's timelessly true. David says
- 20:53that the real goal of worship is that
- 20:56verse 4 of Psalm 145 is that one
- 20:59generation would commend the works of
- 21:01Yahweh to another. One generation would
- 21:04commend the works of Yahweh to another.
- 21:06So multi-generational ministry is
- 21:09actually like the point. Like that's the
- 21:11goal. What good is it if we win an
- 21:14entire generation for Christ and then
- 21:16that generation doesn't
- 21:18carry or pass the baton of worship or
- 21:22faith to the next generation. And so I
- 21:25love this because David's legacy isn't
- 21:27style. David's legacy isn't and that's
- 21:31why I love the fact that we don't know
- 21:33how any of these psalms were actually
- 21:34sung. We don't know the melodies. I'm
- 21:37glad that we don't because if we did, we
- 21:38would try to resurrect a style instead
- 21:41of resurrecting what we should
- 21:43resurrect, which is I think what David's
- 21:45trying to pass along, which is his
- 21:48passion in his heart and his emphasis on
- 21:51the importance of the presence of God,
- 21:53the manifest presence of God. If there's
- 21:55something that I want my son to say
- 21:57about me, it's not that I loved a
- 22:00certain style of worship. It's that I
- 22:03loved God. It's not that I liked a
- 22:05certain kind of music or I like choirs
- 22:07or I liked gospel or I liked hill song.
- 22:10No, no. It's that I knew what the
- 22:12presence of God felt like and I talked
- 22:16to him about how awesome God was and I
- 22:19got him connected not with a style of
- 22:22worship but with the object of our
- 22:25worship which is none other than the
- 22:28Lord. And I think that's a timeless
- 22:30truth. I I don't think that's just true
- 22:31for David. I think that's true for all
- 22:34of us as we try to lead
- 22:35multigenerational churches, as we try to
- 22:39lead intergenerational churches, as we
- 22:41realize that the likelihood of somebody
- 22:43being a believer is in direct proportion
- 22:46to the amount of people that they
- 22:48worship with who come from other
- 22:50generations. I think it's easy to create
- 22:53churches with one generation present.
- 22:56But what we need is we need 70 and 80
- 22:59year olds to be commending the works of
- 23:00Yahweh to the next generation. And we
- 23:03need boomers to be commending the works
- 23:05of Yahweh to millennials and gen Gen X.
- 23:08And we need Gen X and millennials to
- 23:10commend the works of Yahweh to Gen Z.
- 23:13That's healthy. It's good. And that's
- 23:15not just true for David in Psalm 145.
- 23:17And the reason that we're sitting here
- 23:19today still talking about David is
- 23:22because guess what? His goal happened.
- 23:25We're going to go to Psalm 146 tomorrow
- 23:28and Ezra is going to eventually write
- 23:32the last five psalms. Why? Because the
- 23:36legacy of what David instituted got
- 23:39passed from one generation to the next
- 23:41to the next and the next to the next and
- 23:43the next to the next to the next finally
- 23:45to Ezra. And songs haven't gotten passed
- 23:50down, but a heart for worship has gotten
- 23:52passed down. And my question to you is,
- 23:55are you going to keep the baton going?
- 23:58Are you going to commend Yahweh's works
- 24:00to the next generation? I know I am. At
- 24:02least I'm going to try my best. All
- 24:04right, that is Psalms 142 to 145. I hope
- 24:09that you ENJOY DAY 299. TOMORROW WE'VE
