- 0:24family. Welcome to day 285.
- 0:27We are looking at Psalms 99
- 0:31101
- 0:33today. For the past couple of days,
- 0:35we've been in this mini collection of
- 0:38Yahweh reigns psalms. Psalms that are
- 0:41really focused on the kingship of
- 0:44Yahweh, on the throne of Yahweh, on the
- 0:47reigning and ruling of Yahweh. The
- 0:50connection or the context really has
- 0:53been David's reentering of the presence
- 0:56of God in Jerusalem, the rebuilding or
- 1:00the reestablishing of the tabernacle and
- 1:03bringing the ark of the covenant back
- 1:06where it belongs. So today we are
- 1:09actually going to end this kind of
- 1:11miniseries about the psalms that are all
- 1:15focused on Yahweh's reign. All right,
- 1:17we're going to finish that section and
- 1:20we're going to look at these final three
- 1:22Psalms. Now, I'll give you a precursor,
- 1:24just kind of like a heads up. Psalm 101
- 1:27is not technically a part of this little
- 1:29mini collection, right? Psalm 99 and
- 1:32Psalm 100 are. I think I told you a
- 1:34couple days ago, everything from Psalm
- 1:3593 to Psalm 100 are a part of this
- 1:38little mini collection. However, Psalm
- 1:41101 fits perfectly
- 1:45after this collection, and there's a
- 1:48small part of me that would love I I
- 1:50kind of want it to get grafted in. But
- 1:52anyway, I get why it's not, but I'll
- 1:55make a case for that in a little bit.
- 1:56All right. If you have not done the
- 1:58reading for the day, then stop the
- 2:00video, pause the audio, go get the
- 2:02reading done, and then come back. All
- 2:04right. Uh if you have done the reading,
- 2:07then let's dive in. Like every day, I'm
- 2:10going to give you context clues to help
- 2:11you understand and orient yourself to
- 2:14what's being written or what's being
- 2:16read rather. And then I'm going to give
- 2:19you some nerdy nuggets, some things that
- 2:20you wouldn't have been able to know just
- 2:22by reading it on your own. And then I'm
- 2:25going to leave the episode, end the
- 2:26episode with a timeless truth. I'm
- 2:28really excited about our timeless truth
- 2:30today. Let's dive into context. All
- 2:32right. The context is Yahweh's triumphal
- 2:36entry into Jerusalem to reign from his
- 2:39tent, from his tabernacle. These psalms,
- 2:42Psalm 99, and 100, they make sense
- 2:45without context, right? You could read
- 2:48Psalm, you can read Psalm 93, 94, 95,
- 2:5196, 97, 98, 99, and 100 and they'll make
- 2:55sense. Like they're reasonable, they're
- 2:57logical. But the moment that you know
- 2:59that okay these psalms are most likely
- 3:02being sung uh as the ark of the covenant
- 3:06has been at Oed Edom's house the ark of
- 3:09the covenant has not been in its proper
- 3:12place and David is putting the ark of
- 3:16the covenant back in the tabernacle so
- 3:18that worship like could actually begin
- 3:22to to function again in all three areas
- 3:25of worship not just the singing but the
- 3:27service and the sacrifice. Okay? So that
- 3:30temp that tabernacle worship can
- 3:32actually do what it needs to do. Okay?
- 3:35So that's the context. With no context,
- 3:37these psalms are clear. Once you have
- 3:39context, they become even clearer. I
- 3:41want you to think about these psalms as
- 3:44Yahweh's triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
- 3:46Remember in the Gospels, Jesus is going
- 3:48to have a triumphal entry into
- 3:50Jerusalem. And once you realize, oh wow,
- 3:53there was a triumphal entry into
- 3:55Jerusalem in the Old Testament as well,
- 3:57you can begin to make some connections
- 3:59between the Old and New Testaments or
- 4:02covenants. All right, let's dive into
- 4:03some nerdy nerdy nuggets. Okay, family,
- 4:06the wait is over. My brand new book,
- 4:09Crushing Chaos, is out now and available
- 4:12everywhere books are sold. Literally
- 4:16today, I walked into a Barnes & Noble
- 4:18and I signed a bunch of copies at a
- 4:21physical location. So, you can grab this
- 4:23book at a physical Barnes & Noble or you
- 4:26can go to a Books a Million or Amazon or
- 4:29anywhere books are sold and grab a copy.
- 4:32If you enjoy reading the Bible from an
- 4:35ancient perspective, if you understand
- 4:38that the beauty of scripture is actually
- 4:40knowing it in context, then you'll love
- 4:42this book. And if there's any chaos in
- 4:45your personal life, I think that reading
- 4:48the Bible from an ancient perspective
- 4:50can actually help to crush the chaos in
- 4:52your life. I think this book is going to
- 4:54be a New York Times bestseller. I really
- 4:56do. I think we wrote a good one. I think
- 4:58you should get a copy today. All right,
- 5:02back to the episode. Psalm 99.
- 5:04Immediately, you know, we kind of get
- 5:06that same theme that we've been getting
- 5:09in verse one. The Lord reigns. Let the
- 5:12nations tremble. Okay. Why do the
- 5:14nations need to tremble if the Lord
- 5:15reigns? Well, it's because he doesn't
- 5:17just reign as king over Israel. He
- 5:21reigns as supreme king over all the
- 5:24earth. Okay? And if the nations have
- 5:27been in rebellion against God and have
- 5:30not been submitted to the lordship of
- 5:32God, then yes, they should be trembling
- 5:35with fear now that Yahweh reigns. Okay.
- 5:38Um, so the people definitely saw that
- 5:43putting Yahweh in his tabernacle didn't
- 5:46just have implications for how the
- 5:48people of Israel were to be affected by
- 5:50Yahweh, but how the nations are to be
- 5:52affected by Yahweh. Okay, so the Lord
- 5:55reigns. Okay, we've seen that those
- 5:57words, those three words repeated over
- 5:59and over and over again in this
- 6:01collection of Psalms, this mini
- 6:02collection says this, he sits enthroned
- 6:05between the cherubim. All right. So, you
- 6:08may be wondering, all right, what what
- 6:10what does that mean? What does enthroned
- 6:13between the cherubim mean? Well, the ark
- 6:16of the covenant is going to have a mercy
- 6:19seat on it. And there are cherubim that
- 6:21are facing each other on top of the ark
- 6:23of the covenant. So, this is ark
- 6:26language. Okay? When when it says he
- 6:29sits enthroned between the cherubim,
- 6:31this is the presence of God that rests
- 6:34between the two cherubim on the lid of
- 6:38the ark of the covenant. The essentially
- 6:41this gold box that we know is the ark of
- 6:43the covenant. Okay? And so Yahweh sits
- 6:46enthroned between the cherubim. This is
- 6:49the biggest clue that we are definitely
- 6:52talking about the ark being brought back
- 6:55into Jerusalem to rest in the
- 6:56tabernacle. Okay. Uh so this is called
- 7:00the mercy seat. Okay. The mercy seat.
- 7:03The place where once a year the high
- 7:06priest goes with the blood of the lamb
- 7:09and sprinkles what? Sprinkles the mercy
- 7:12seat. Okay. In the holy of holies and
- 7:15makes atonement for Israel. the mercy
- 7:18seat. Okay? Yahweh sits enthroned on the
- 7:22mercy seat is is another way to say
- 7:24between the cherubim because what's
- 7:26between the cherubim? The manifest
- 7:28presence of Yahweh on his mercy seat in
- 7:31order for Yahweh to sit amongst us. It
- 7:35requires mercy. Okay? He his holiness
- 7:40wants to kill anything that is not holy.
- 7:44But God in his mercy, instead of his
- 7:48wrath being poured out on us, his mercy
- 7:51begins to abate that wrath so that we
- 7:54can experience the manifest presence of
- 7:56Yahweh. It's actually an incredible
- 7:57thing. Let the earth shake. Great is the
- 8:00Lord in Zion. Remember Zion is
- 8:02essentially Jerusalem. Okay, Jerusalem.
- 8:05He is exalted over all the nations. Let
- 8:07them praise your great and awesome name.
- 8:10He is holy. All right. The king is
- 8:14mighty. He loves justice. You have
- 8:16established equity. And Jacob, you have
- 8:18done what is just and right. Exalt the
- 8:21Lord our God and worship at his
- 8:24foottool. So now things flip. A moment
- 8:26ago, the the ark was the throne or the
- 8:31seat of Yahweh. And now it's the
- 8:34foottool of Yahweh because Yahweh
- 8:38essentially declares the the heaven is
- 8:41my throne and the earth is my foottool.
- 8:44So what we have is that in the
- 8:46tabernacle we have two realms
- 8:49overlapping. I love to use Narnia as an
- 8:52example of an overlap between Earth and
- 8:56Narnia. Well, the wardrobe is both. It's
- 9:00both Narnia and earth. And then the same
- 9:03way the tabernacle and then later the
- 9:06temple is supposed to be like a ven
- 9:08diagram where there's heaven on one side
- 9:10and earth on the other side. Everything
- 9:12that overlaps is heaven and earth. And
- 9:14the temple is supposed to connect heaven
- 9:17and earth. It's supposed to occupy or
- 9:20both spaces. Both heaven and earth
- 9:22occupy the temple. I was going to say
- 9:24the temple occupy both spaces, but I
- 9:26guess that's also true. But that overlap
- 9:29is the temple. Okay, that space where
- 9:32I'm in heaven, I'm also on earth is the
- 9:34temple. And so it is both the throne,
- 9:38but it's also the foottool. And then we
- 9:40get this cool little part. Moses and
- 9:43Aaron were among his priests. Samuel was
- 9:47among those who called on his name. They
- 9:49called on the Lord and he answered them.
- 9:52Okay, so what what's going on? Why do we
- 9:54get Moses and Aaron and Samuel mentioned
- 9:58in this psalm? Well, I'll I'll just kind
- 10:00of read it to you as I've got it in my
- 10:02notes. Uh, well, the big idea before I
- 10:05read it. The big idea is that Moses and
- 10:07Aaron, the big idea is that Moses and
- 10:10Aaron were a part of establishing the
- 10:12original tabernacle, right? When God
- 10:15first gave instructions that he wanted
- 10:16to dwell amongst his people and they
- 10:18should build him a tabernacle, aka a
- 10:20tent. Okay? And so David is saying that
- 10:23same authority that was on Moses and
- 10:26Aaron is the same authority that I'm
- 10:29walking in by reestablishing that
- 10:31tabernacle, by rebuilding that
- 10:33tabernacle, by reinstituting a
- 10:36tabernacle worship system. Okay? He's
- 10:39kind of saying, "Hey, like uh I'm
- 10:42tipping my hat to Moses and Aaron and
- 10:44Samuel because remember Samuel is this
- 10:47hinge leader. Samuel, like Moses,
- 10:51occupies three distinct spaces. He's a
- 10:54prophet, he's a priest, and he's a king
- 10:56figure. Okay? And so Samuel uh when the
- 11:01tabernacle is destroyed, he as a person
- 11:05acts as a mobile tabernacle. They can
- 11:08perform sacrifices any place Samuel
- 11:10goes, as long as Samuel's presiding over
- 11:13the the sacrifice. All right, let me
- 11:15kind of read it to you the way I've got
- 11:16it here. David restoring the tabernacle
- 11:19and bringing the ark to Jerusalem
- 11:21connects him to a lineage of people that
- 11:24have prioritized these same elements,
- 11:27the tabernacle and the ark. Moses and
- 11:30Aaron, especially Moses, were crucial in
- 11:32setting up in the setting up of the
- 11:35original tabernacle and placing the ark
- 11:37within it. So, establishing Yahweh as
- 11:39king in the center of Israel. Samuel is
- 11:42mentioned alongside them as a Moses
- 11:44figure. He like Moses was a prophet,
- 11:47priest and king figure. He therefore had
- 11:50the same authority and permission to
- 11:53establish a tabernacle and place the ark
- 11:56inside. He did it at a place called
- 11:57Shiloh. He had anointed David to rule
- 12:00like Saul before him. But Saul failed in
- 12:03this task. So David rebuilding the
- 12:05tabernacle and placing the ark inside of
- 12:08it is sanctioned by Yahweh in the same
- 12:10way as the original. Okay. So, uh, the
- 12:14authority of his chosen priests set up
- 12:17the original. Okay. The authority of
- 12:19Yahweh's chosen priest set up the
- 12:21original tabernacle. And now the
- 12:23authority of his new chosen priest, aka
- 12:26David, will set up the new tabernacle
- 12:30through his chosen priest, David. All
- 12:32right. So, th this psalm highlights
- 12:35Moses, Aaron, and Samuel and Yahweh's
- 12:37relationship, and that David is
- 12:40continuing in that legacy. Okay, that's
- 12:43really, really, really, really
- 12:44important. This is a nerdy little
- 12:46detail, but it gives us a clue about the
- 12:49context of what's going on. All right,
- 12:52Psalm 100. I spent so much time giving
- 12:54you nerdy nuggets for Psalm 99. All
- 12:56right, Psalm 100. Since Yahweh is now
- 12:58back in his tabernacle, seated on his
- 13:01throne, exalted as king over his people,
- 13:06they are encouraged and invited to enter
- 13:09his gates with thanksgiving and enter
- 13:11his courts with praise. That's Psalm 100
- 13:13vers4. Enter his court, sorry, enter his
- 13:16gates with thanksgiving and his courts
- 13:19with praise. Give thanks to him and
- 13:21praise his name. Yeah, actually one of
- 13:23my earliest memories as a kid, maybe
- 13:25five, six years old, is uh I went to a
- 13:28church that said that every single
- 13:30Sunday, uh let us enter into his gates
- 13:33with thanksgiving and enter into his
- 13:36courts with praise. And so, one of these
- 13:39days, maybe when we're done with our
- 13:41year-long trek through the Bible, I'll
- 13:43kind of do a lesson here on the podcast
- 13:45of how I pray. Because part of the way
- 13:49that I I learned to pray a couple years
- 13:51ago was walking through the tabernacle.
- 13:53And so when we think about enter into
- 13:56his gates with thanksgiving when Jesus
- 13:58taught us the Lord's prayer, it starts
- 14:00out with hallowed be thy name. It starts
- 14:02out with thanksgiving and praise. And
- 14:04man, I could get into a timeless truth
- 14:06here, but I won't. Uh but I'll give you
- 14:08like a many timeless truth that a lot of
- 14:10times gratitude, thanksgiving and
- 14:14praise, if you if you start your prayers
- 14:18with thanksgiving and praise, you'll
- 14:20find out that uh the things you are
- 14:23going to ask God for, by the time you're
- 14:25done thanking him and praising him, you
- 14:27begin to realize, I don't even need the
- 14:29thing that I thought I needed.
- 14:30Thanksgiving and praise should always
- 14:32frontload your prayer. We don't want to
- 14:35thank God after we've asked him for
- 14:37stuff. I guess the formula that I've
- 14:39always given people is praise should
- 14:42preede petition. Praise should precede
- 14:45petition. Of course, I could petition
- 14:47God for all kinds of things. Of course,
- 14:50I want to I there's things that I need.
- 14:52There are things that I want. But man, I
- 14:55want to enter into his gates with
- 14:58thanksgiving. I want to enter into his
- 15:00courts with praise. Actually the formula
- 15:03that I always use is praise and then
- 15:05petition and then prophecy. I want to
- 15:08pro prophesy that these things are going
- 15:10to happen and then I always end with
- 15:12praise. So praise, petition, prophecy,
- 15:15praise and then that the last the final
- 15:17praise is a praise in advance. And I
- 15:19believe that everything I've asked you
- 15:21for is already done. All right. Psalm
- 15:23100, I want you to put this verse that
- 15:26you're probably very familiar with.
- 15:28Enter his gates of thanksgiving. into
- 15:30his court with praise in the context of
- 15:33now that the tabernacle is set up, now
- 15:35that the ark has been placed inside of
- 15:37it. Now let us shout for joy to the Lord
- 15:41all the earth. Worship the Lord with
- 15:43gladness. Come before him with joyful
- 15:45songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is
- 15:48he who made us and we are his. We are
- 15:51his people, the sheep of his pasture.
- 15:53Enter his gates with thanksgiving and
- 15:55his courts of praise. Give thanks to him
- 15:57and praise his name. For the Lord is
- 15:59good and his love endures forever. His
- 16:01faithfulness continues through all
- 16:03generations. Okay. Now that this whole
- 16:06process from Psalm 93 all the way to
- 16:09Psalm 99, the all of this work has been
- 16:13established to bring the ark back to the
- 16:15tabernacle to put it within the tent of
- 16:19meeting in Jerusalem. Now that that's
- 16:21all done, Psalm 100 is the culmination
- 16:25or the response. And then we get to
- 16:27Psalm 101. And all these Psalms from
- 16:30Psalm 93 to Psalm 100 is all about how
- 16:32Yahweh reigns. It's all about the reign
- 16:34and the rule of Yahweh. Well, guess what
- 16:36Psalm 101 is? Psalm 101 is almost like
- 16:40it's a royal psalm. So, you need to know
- 16:42that. Uh, but it's not royal in like
- 16:45it's messianic that it prophesies about
- 16:48Jesus the Messiah. It's it's royal in
- 16:51that this is a psalm of David that
- 16:54functions like a royal oath of office.
- 16:57This is what the king of Israel would
- 16:59swear to do in his role as king. This a
- 17:03promise that King David is making. That
- 17:05is this these verses is what he promises
- 17:09he will do. Some scholars even think
- 17:12that this was an oath put to song by
- 17:15David but aimed at his descendants. So
- 17:19they would swear this as they ascended
- 17:21to the throne to to be coordinated as
- 17:24king. This this psalm then is what it
- 17:28means to be a king of Israel under the
- 17:31authority of the true king Yahweh. So
- 17:33Psalm 101 then is also like a response
- 17:37to everything we've read from Psalm 93
- 17:39to 100 or or really from Psalm 93 to
- 17:41999. If Yahweh truly is enthroned on the
- 17:46mercy seat, if he truly is enthroned
- 17:48between the cherubim in the Holy of
- 17:50Holies in his tabernacle in Jerusalem,
- 17:54and since his rule and reign is the
- 17:58center of life for the people of God,
- 18:01then I should be leading in light of his
- 18:05leadership. I should be ruling in light
- 18:08of his rule. I should be reigning in
- 18:10light of his reign. I should be
- 18:12governing in light of his governance.
- 18:15Okay, so this is the oath. We'll read
- 18:17Psalm 101 together. I will sing of your
- 18:20love and justice to you, Lord. I will
- 18:22sing praise. I will be careful to lead a
- 18:26blameless life. When will you come to
- 18:28me? I will conduct the affairs of my
- 18:31house with a blameless heart. I will not
- 18:35look with approval on anything that is
- 18:37vile. I hate what faithless people do. I
- 18:41will have no part in it. And that's not
- 18:44just faithless like I don't believe.
- 18:46That's faithless like unfaithful would
- 18:48be a probably a better word there. The
- 18:51perverse of heart shall be far from me.
- 18:53I will have nothing to do with what is
- 18:55evil. Whoever slanders their neighbor in
- 18:58secret, I will put to silence. Whoever
- 19:00hasaughty eyes and a proud heart, I will
- 19:03not tolerate. My eyes will be on the
- 19:06faithful of the land, they may dwell
- 19:08with me. The one whose walk is blameless
- 19:11will minister to me. No one who
- 19:13practices deceit will dwell in my house.
- 19:16No one who speaks falsely will stand in
- 19:19my presence every morning. I will put to
- 19:22silence all the wicked in the land. I
- 19:24will cut off every evildoer from the
- 19:26city of the Lord. All right. That right
- 19:28there is David's oath of office. That's
- 19:31his promise. Yahweh, since you reign,
- 19:35since we have enthroned you on your in
- 19:41your tabernacle, aka your palace, where
- 19:45you govern, I now must govern in light
- 19:47of that. And these are the things I'm
- 19:50oathing. I don't even know if that's a
- 19:52word, promising, oathing to you,
- 19:55declaring what I'm going to do. And this
- 19:58moves effortlessly into our Thomas Truth
- 20:02because this is actually just a good
- 20:04blueprint for leaders everywhere. No one
- 20:07should be leading as if God is not the
- 20:09leader. I can only shepherd the people
- 20:13that God's asked me to pastor in light
- 20:16of how he shepherds. Like I can't be a
- 20:20shepherd with different character or
- 20:22different values than the chief
- 20:24shepherd. I'm shephering in light of the
- 20:28shepherd. And I've experienced this even
- 20:31when I was a youth pastor. I wouldn't
- 20:34give people advice that I didn't think
- 20:35my senior pastor would give them. Okay?
- 20:37My job is to lead in light of how my
- 20:42leader leads. And for David, he's
- 20:44saying, "Well, there's no one above me
- 20:47in the org chart but Yahweh himself."
- 20:50And so, since Yahweh leads a certain
- 20:52way, I'm going to lead that way. And I
- 20:54think it's good for all of us to
- 20:55practice that same principle. I want to
- 20:58lead like God leads. I want to lead like
- 21:01Jesus. And let's even look at this,
- 21:04okay? I will sing of your love and
- 21:07justice to you, Lord. I will sing
- 21:08praise. Guess what? I know as a senior
- 21:10pastor. Doesn't matter who I eventually
- 21:13recruit or hire to be a worship leader.
- 21:16I'm the worship leader cuz I'm the
- 21:18pastor of the church. And I don't have
- 21:20to sing to be a worship leader. I just
- 21:22have to be a leader who worships. Okay.
- 21:24Next. I'll be careful to lead a
- 21:26blameless life. When will you come to
- 21:28me? Like, hey, I I'm going to I'm going
- 21:30to live a pure life. Clean hands, pure
- 21:32heart. I will conduct the affairs of my
- 21:34house with a blameless heart. What good
- 21:36am I to lead God's people if I can't
- 21:38lead my own home well? I will not look
- 21:41with approval on anything that is vile.
- 21:43Oh, that's good, man. That's
- 21:45self-explanatory.
- 21:46I hate what unfaithful people do. I will
- 21:49have no part in it. If you read through
- 21:51Psalm 101, you begin to realize this
- 21:53isn't just a good oath of office for
- 21:55David. This is a good oath of office for
- 21:58every leader. It's a good oath of office
- 22:00for anyone who's in leadership. And the
- 22:04bigger timeless truth here is that in
- 22:08the same way that David needs to lead in
- 22:10light of how God leads, you need to lead
- 22:14in light of how God leads. I need to
- 22:16lead in light of how God leads. And I
- 22:19don't want to lead in such a way that
- 22:21I'm actually leading people away from
- 22:24the one who I'm supposed to be leading
- 22:26them towards, which is the king of kings
- 22:29and the lord of lords. He's king and
- 22:31he's king of this king. I'm not a
- 22:34literal king, but I'm a leader and he's
- 22:37the leader of leaders and we lead in
- 22:40light of his leadership style. And
- 22:42that's not just true for David. That's
- 22:44true for you. That's true for me. That's
- 22:46timelessly true. I don't get to lead in
- 22:48his name, but not lead the way that he's
- 22:50asked me to lead. I follow his example
- 22:53as I lead his people. We got a lot of
- 22:56leaders who somewhere along the way
- 22:58forgot to follow. And I'm not I'm not
- 23:02able to lead until I am able to follow.
- 23:06It's my ability to follow God's lead
- 23:08well that actually enables me to lead
- 23:12others well. And that is the blueprint
- 23:14that David has outlined here in Psalm
- 23:16101. And I think it's a good blueprint
- 23:18for you and I. Tomorrow we've got day
- 23:22286. We're going to be looking at Psalms
- 23:25102 and 103. I can't wait. I'll be right
- 23:28here. Same time, same place. We're going

- 23:37285 days down and I don't know what's
- 23:41that 80 days to go or something like
- 23:43that. Something something. My math isn't
- 23:45good. I didn't get a doctorate in math.
- 23:47I got it in Bible. Ah, I love you guys.
