- 0:24family. Welcome to day 283 here on the
- 0:28Bible department podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:29Dr. Manny Orango, and I'm super excited
- 0:32to dive into what's honestly about to be
- 0:35a collection of Psalms. Okay, from Psalm
- 0:3793 all the way to Psalm 100 is a solid
- 0:42block of Psalms. And we'll probably be
- 0:44in this block of Psalms for the next
- 0:46couple of days. I think probably the
- 0:47next three, if not four days. I can't
- 0:50remember how the Bible reading plan
- 0:51actually breaks down, but buckle up
- 0:54because we are going to be in this
- 0:56collection of Psalms for the next couple
- 0:58of days. Now, if you have not done the
- 1:00reading for today, which is Psalms 93,
- 1:0294, and 95, then I want you to go ahead
- 1:05and stop this video, pause the audio,
- 1:09and go do the reading. Read Psalm 93,
- 1:11Psalm 94, and Psalm 95, and then come on
- 1:15back when the reading is done. For those
- 1:18of us who have done the reading, let me
- 1:21give you some good news and some bad
- 1:23news. All right, I give you the bad news
- 1:25first. The bad news is that there's no
- 1:28context for any of these psalms. Not
- 1:30just today's psalms. You're probably
- 1:32will notice this, right? If you look at
- 1:34Psalm 93, there's no heading. If you
- 1:37look at Psalm 94, there is no heading.
- 1:39And if you look at Psalm 95, there is no
- 1:42heading. Well, if you cheat a little bit
- 1:44and skip ahead, Psalm 96, no heading.
- 1:46Psalm 97, no heading. Psalm 98, the only
- 1:50heading that's there is a Psalm. Thanks.
- 1:53Very, very helpful. Psalm 99, no
- 1:55heading. Psalm 100, a psalm for
- 1:59forgiving grateful praise. And that's
- 2:01going to end this whole block. And then
- 2:04we're going to start at Psalm 101, uh,
- 2:06which is of David, a psalm. Okay, so
- 2:09from Psalm 93 to Psalm 100, this is a
- 2:12solid unit. Okay, this is a collection
- 2:16within book four. All right, so here's
- 2:19the first thing that I want to say. It's
- 2:21the bad news. There is there's no
- 2:23context there. There are no headings
- 2:25here. No context. That's the bad news.
- 2:28The good news is that because this
- 2:31entire block has no context and the
- 2:35contents of the psalms are very similar.
- 2:39Actually, we can begin to deduce that
- 2:42the context of all these psalms is the
- 2:45same. All right. So we don't have
- 2:48context, no headings for the individual
- 2:50psalms themselves. But because the
- 2:52contents of the psalms are very very
- 2:54similar, most scholars, I mean all
- 2:56scholars would agree that these psalms
- 2:5993, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100 that
- 3:04these eight psalms make up a literary
- 3:07unit and are to be understood together.
- 3:10uh they actually have the same context
- 3:13which is the celebration or the
- 3:16enthronement of the reign of Yahweh. All
- 3:20right, the celebration or the
- 3:22enthronement or even the ascension of
- 3:25Yahweh to his throne. Okay, the theme
- 3:28here is the reign of Yahweh. Now, we
- 3:31don't know exactly which cultural moment
- 3:34that is being celebrated in. We have we
- 3:36don't we really don't know. We have no
- 3:38idea. Okay, so we don't have a ton of
- 3:41context, but we have a shared theme.
- 3:43Okay, now now that you know we know that
- 3:47there is no context for all of these
- 3:48psalms, okay, Psalm 93, 94, 95 are the
- 3:51psalms that we have today, we're going
- 3:52to dive into some nerdy nuggets as it
- 3:55relates to these psalms. Okay, first
- 3:59Psalm 93 is going to start, let me go
- 4:02ahead flip back. Psalm 93 is going to
- 4:04start out with these words. The Lord
- 4:07reigns. The Lord Wayne reigns. Yahweh
- 4:11reigns. By the way, just extra nerdy
- 4:13nugget. Anytime you see L O R D all
- 4:15caps, that is your English translation
- 4:18telling you that the Hebrew word Yahweh
- 4:21is there. Okay. Uh Y HWH. Okay.
- 4:26Typically in a Hebrew Bible, just four
- 4:28dots. The Jewish people would not dare
- 4:31write the name Yahweh. Okay. It was too
- 4:34holy according to their understanding
- 4:36and their theology. All right. Sometimes
- 4:38I'll end up teaching, you know, what was
- 4:41standard or what was normal in in in the
- 4:43Jewish world. And people will walk up to
- 4:45me like, "Hey, why don't we still do
- 4:47that?" And I'm like, "Cuz we're not
- 4:48Jewish." I'm like, "Cuz we're
- 4:51Christians." Anyway, uh that's a whole
- 4:55other episode for a whole another day.
- 4:58Now, Psalm 93 starts with these words,
- 5:00"The Lord reigns." Now, you're going to
- 5:02begin to realize as you read the next
- 5:04couple of days that that repeated phrase
- 5:06is going to be found all the way through
- 5:08this section from Psalm 93 all the way
- 5:10to Psalm 100. Actually, I want you to go
- 5:12to 90 Psalm 96:10. Okay? Psalm 96:10
- 5:17says this, "Say among the nation, the
- 5:20Lord reigns." Okay? I want you to go to
- 5:22Psalm 97:1, "The Lord reigns. Let the
- 5:26earth be glad. Let the distant shores
- 5:28rejoice." Okay? I want you to go to
- 5:29Psalm 99 verse1. Psalm 99 verse1. What
- 5:34do you think it's going to say? I think
- 5:36it's going to say something about God
- 5:37reigning. That's right. Psalm 99 verse1.
- 5:40The Lord reigns. Okay. So, this whole
- 5:42section from Psalm 93 all the way to
- 5:45Psalm 100. We don't have context, but we
- 5:48do have a consistent message, a
- 5:51consistent theme. That is this. The Lord
- 5:56reigns. Yahweh reigns. These eight
- 6:00psalms are all about the rule and reign
- 6:04of Yahweh. That is what we are talking
- 6:06about in this little mini collection of
- 6:10psalms inside of book four which is a
- 6:14collection of psalms within the wider
- 6:17book of the psalms which is a collection
- 6:20of psalms. This is like psalm seption.
- 6:23It's like a dream within a dream within
- 6:25a dream. Yeah. Psalms, collections of
- 6:27psalms within collections of psalms
- 6:28within collections of psalms. Psalm
- 6:30seion. All right. Psalm 93 to 100 focus
- 6:33on one singular theme. The reign and
- 6:35rule of Yahweh, the king of the earth.
- 6:37These psalms are all about that one
- 6:40singular theme. And this is David's
- 6:44legacy. All right? This is David's
- 6:47legacy. I I need you to realize that
- 6:50although Yahweh has always been king,
- 6:54Israel has consistently failed in her
- 6:59history as the bride of Yahweh and as
- 7:02the nation of Israel. They have
- 7:05consistently failed. The Hebrew
- 7:07scriptures are actually the testimony of
- 7:10the failure of Israel to acknowledge
- 7:14Yahweh as the reigning and ruling king
- 7:17of the universe. That is the story of
- 7:19scripture is Israel's failure to worship
- 7:23Yahweh and him alone to live according
- 7:26to that truth. Okay. And this is the
- 7:30legacy of David. Okay. The reality is
- 7:34that Yahweh was already king of Israel.
- 7:36Deuteronomy established that. Okay.
- 7:38Deuteronomy establishes that Yahweh is
- 7:40susarin. Israel is vassel. But in the
- 7:43time of the judges and in the reign of
- 7:46Saul and so many other moments that
- 7:50kingship was not acknowledged, was not
- 7:54recognized by Israel. So now in the
- 7:58Psalms, the Psalms as a whole, but
- 8:01definitely in this collection of of
- 8:03eight psalms, we see in here Israel
- 8:07recognizing the kingship of Yahweh over
- 8:10them, proclaiming that he reigns and so
- 8:15therefore submitting to his authority.
- 8:18As we will continue to see, this is the
- 8:20true significance. This is the true
- 8:23legacy of David's reign. David makes
- 8:26Israel recognize the reign of Yahweh.
- 8:30David makes Israel recognize the reign
- 8:35of Yahweh. Unlike any other king, unlike
- 8:38any other leader, unlike any other
- 8:40ruler, David is adamant that the people
- 8:45recognize Yahweh as their king and
- 8:48recognize the reign of Yahweh. This is
- 8:52why David is a man after God's own
- 8:54heart. Not because he's moral, not
- 8:56because he's holier than anybody else,
- 8:59but because he is adamant that the
- 9:02people recognize the reign of Yahweh.
- 9:07Okay? And worship him as such. Yahweh
- 9:10has always been king, but Israel has
- 9:13rarely behaved based on that reality
- 9:16except here in the Psalms. Okay, Psalm
- 9:1994. Okay, that that's all we'll say
- 9:21about Psalm 93. Ah, I'll say this about
- 9:24Psalm 93. One last thing about Psalm 93,
- 9:26you can begin to see mythological
- 9:28language again. Starting in verse uh
- 9:31what verse is this? Starting in verse
- 9:32three, the seas have lifted up, Lord.
- 9:36The seas have lifted up their voice. The
- 9:39seas have lifted up their pounding
- 9:41waves. Mightier than the thunder of the
- 9:44great waters. Mightier than the breakers
- 9:47of the sea. The Lord on high is mighty.
- 9:52Okay, so we're going to get that sea,
- 9:54sea, sea, waves, water, thunder, all
- 9:59that language is mythological language
- 10:02that is communicating that the God that
- 10:06tamed the chaotic ocean that tamed the
- 10:10waters of Genesis 1 verse two and
- 10:14established order over the chaos. that
- 10:17is the God that we are talking about.
- 10:19Okay. So that mythological language that
- 10:24probably a lot of us may be
- 10:25uncomfortable with because we're used to
- 10:27thinking about God not in mythological
- 10:29terms but in factual terms because we
- 10:32define truth a little bit differently
- 10:34than our ancient counterparts define
- 10:36truth. Maybe thinking about God in
- 10:39mythological terms is just a little like
- 10:40weird for you because that feels like
- 10:43fantasy or a fairy tale or like not real
- 10:46or not true. But here it is. Uh and
- 10:48you're going to see it all throughout
- 10:50the Psalms. You're going to continue to
- 10:51see mythological language. All right.
- 10:52Psalm 94. If Yahweh is king, okay, if
- 10:56he's susarin, one of the twists that the
- 11:01Hebrew Bible is going to put on that
- 11:04idea of suzarin is that Yahweh is also
- 11:08husband. Okay, this is not true for any
- 11:10other other kings, you know what I mean,
- 11:12or gods, but this is uniquely true for
- 11:15Yahweh that he is susarin, he's king, he
- 11:19reigns, but he's also husband. So he is
- 11:24going to enact vengeance and he's going
- 11:27to be jealous when his people are
- 11:31unfaithful to him. It's not just that
- 11:33they are being unfaithful vassels,
- 11:36they're being unfaithful wives, they're
- 11:39being an unfaithful wife to him. So
- 11:41there's an added layer and level to the
- 11:44metaphor. Okay. So what do we get in
- 11:46Psalm 94? Psalm 94 starts and the Lord
- 11:51is a God who avenges.
- 11:54Okay, I actually want to see how the
- 11:55NRSV says it. Psalm 94 in the NIV says
- 12:00you're a God who avenges. Not as strong
- 12:04as we're going to read it in the NRSV.
- 12:07Psalm 94:1 NRSV. Oh Lord, you got a
- 12:11vengeance.
- 12:13Some some for some reason avenge does
- 12:16doesn't carry or pack the punch that
- 12:20vengeance carries. Okay, you got a
- 12:23vengeance shine forth. Rise up, oh judge
- 12:26of the earth, give to the proud what
- 12:28they deserve, oh Lord, how long shall
- 12:30the wicked How long shall the wicked
- 12:33exalt? Okay, so vengeance. God is a god
- 12:36of vengeance. Why is he a god of
- 12:37vengeance? He's a god of vengeance
- 12:40because he's not only a king, he's also
- 12:42a husband. Now, in order to kind of
- 12:44understand this, you know, I got into an
- 12:46Uber yesterday and for whatever reason,
- 12:48my Uber driver, her name is Tama, she
- 12:50was kind of saying like, you know,
- 12:51sometimes women's cheat, women cheat,
- 12:53men cheat, women cheat, everybody cheat.
- 12:55You know what I'm saying? Sometimes
- 12:56people cheat cuz they got to get their
- 12:57needs met. She was kind of talking about
- 12:59cheating. And I said, well, I've never
- 13:01cheated on anybody. You know what I
- 13:02mean? I I don't cheat, you know? And cuz
- 13:05cheating is kind of cowardly. And I was
- 13:07like, "Yeah, I I just I'm, you know, I'd
- 13:10rather break up with somebody than cheat
- 13:12on them." Like, that's just that's
- 13:14moving like a coward. You know, don't be
- 13:16scared. Just tell a person, "Hey, like
- 13:18this relationship's not working out."
- 13:20And then break up with them. Stop being
- 13:22with them. You know what I mean? And
- 13:24then she was like, "Well, what have you
- 13:25married?" I'm like, "Then go get
- 13:27marriage counseling. Figure out, you
- 13:28know, what the issue is." And she was
- 13:30like, "Your wife may be cheating on
- 13:31you." And I was like, "Ma'am, if my wife
- 13:34is cheating on me, somebody would die."
- 13:35I literally looked at this woman in her
- 13:36face. She was like, "No, somebody would
- 13:37die." And she was like, "What? That's
- 13:40crazy. That ain't Christian B. Ain't you
- 13:42a pastor?" Blah blah blah. And I was
- 13:44like, "Ma'am, do you have a Bible?" And
- 13:46I was like, "I'm going to read so I'm in
- 13:48the car. I'm in the Uber reading the
- 13:50Bible to this woman." Okay. I'm like,
- 13:51"Hey, this is s This is Proverbs chapter
- 13:556." Okay. Proverbs chapter 6, verse 30.
- 13:59Uh, actually, no, no, no. I wrote down I
- 14:01want to start reading in verse 23. Okay.
- 14:03Psalm. Why do I keep saying Psalm?
- 14:05Proverbs. Sorry. It's cuz we're in the
- 14:08book of Psalms right now. Okay, this is
- 14:10Proverbs 6:23. For the commandment for
- 14:14For the commandment is a lamp and the
- 14:16teaching a light and the reproof of
- 14:19discipline are the way of life to
- 14:21preserve you from the wife of another.
- 14:24Okay. So the so the the the father
- 14:26figure in the proverb is saying, "Hey,
- 14:29you can never have sex with the wife of
- 14:32somebody else, the wife of another man.
- 14:34Never, never, never, never." Okay? To
- 14:37preserve you from the wife of another,
- 14:39from the smooth tongue of the
- 14:41adulteress. Okay? Verse 25. Do not
- 14:45desire her beauty in your heart. Do not
- 14:47lust after another man's wife. Okay. And
- 14:49do not let her capture you with her
- 14:52eyelashes. Lashes ain't new. Lashes
- 14:55ain't new. You know what I'm saying? No
- 14:56letter capture with the lashes. Okay,
- 14:59here we go. Verse 26. I know this is
- 15:02controversial. You're not going to like
- 15:03this, but this is a proverb. Says this,
- 15:06"For a prostitute's fee is only a loaf
- 15:09of bread." Hey, hey, if if if you got a
- 15:12lust issue, go sleep with a prostitute.
- 15:14A prostitute's only going to cost you a
- 15:15loaf of bread. They're cheap. They're
- 15:17not even It's not even expensive.
- 15:19There's prostitutes out here. Go, go,
- 15:22go, go with a prostitute. Don't mess
- 15:24around with another man's wife. Don't
- 15:25mess around with a married woman. Why?
- 15:28But the wife of another stalks a man's
- 15:31very life. Hey, the sin of sex, you
- 15:34still got to deal with the consequences
- 15:36of the sin of having sex outside the
- 15:39confines of marriage. But the
- 15:41consequences of sleep with a prostitute
- 15:44is is is guilt, some shame, I don't
- 15:46know, maybe chlamyia. But you have sex
- 15:49with another man's wife, you'll you're
- 15:50going to die. You're going to die. That
- 15:54man's going to kill you. Okay, here we
- 15:58go. And and typically moms don't like
- 16:00their their husbands talking to their
- 16:01sons this way. This is why I love
- 16:03Proverbs. It's from a man to a man.
- 16:06Okay, Proverbs is like, look, look, hey,
- 16:08hey, let us reason together. Okay, let
- 16:11your dad tell you like it is. All right,
- 16:12prostitute only going to cost you a loaf
- 16:14of bread. But another man's wife
- 16:17Woo! Going to get your butt beat. You
- 16:19You going You going You going to get
- 16:20jacked up. Okay, here we go. Next. Can
- 16:24fire be carried in the bosom without
- 16:26burning one's clothes? Or one walk on
- 16:28hot clothes without scorching the feet?
- 16:31So is he who sleeps with his neighbor's
- 16:34wife? Wife. If you sleep with a married
- 16:38man's wife, no one who touches her will
- 16:41go unpunished. You don't have the same
- 16:43consequence for sleeping with a
- 16:44prostitute as you have with taking that
- 16:47which belongs to another man. Here we
- 16:50go. Thieves are not despised who steal
- 16:53only to satisfy their appetite when
- 16:54they're hungry. Yet if they are caught,
- 16:57they will pay sevenfold that they will
- 17:00forfeit all the goods of their house.
- 17:02But he who commits adultery, he who has
- 17:05sex with another man's wife has no
- 17:09sense. He who does it destroys himself.
- 17:13He will get wounds and dishonor in his
- 17:17disgrace will not be wiped away. For
- 17:21jealousy arouses a husband's fury. I
- 17:26said to Tama, I said, "Do you understand
- 17:28what the word fury means?" Tama said,
- 17:31"Fury?
- 17:32If my wife were to cheat on me, then
- 17:36whoever
- 17:38she messed around with would experience
- 17:42my fury. Fury. She's like, "What would
- 17:46you do to your wife?" I was like,
- 17:47"Divorce? I wouldn't lay a hand on my
- 17:49wife. I would never I would never touch
- 17:52my wife. I would never hit my wife.
- 17:54Never. You all know who these fists
- 17:56would be reserved for? the idiot who
- 17:59thought that he could take that which
- 18:01belongs to me. I said, "Sweetheart Tama,
- 18:05let me help you understand something. If
- 18:07somebody stole my car, I wouldn't be mad
- 18:08at the car. I'd go find the person who
- 18:10stole my car and they'd experience my
- 18:12fury." She's like, "Yeah, but it takes
- 18:14two to tango." She was not have she
- 18:16didn't have a biblical worldview. She
- 18:18didn't know. She didn't understand the
- 18:19Bible. I was like, "Sweetheart, for
- 18:21jealousy arouses a husband's
- 18:24fury." Yeah. I was like, "Don't call me
- 18:27man. Call me fury. I'm going to be call
- 18:30me fury." And if that's how I feel as as
- 18:34a husband, imagine how Yahweh feels. And
- 18:38so this Psalm 94 is actually here to say
- 18:42he's king, but he's also husband. And he
- 18:46will rise up in vengeance over the
- 18:49nations who the people of Israel have
- 18:53sacrificed to their idols. He will rise
- 18:57up in vengeance against the nations who
- 19:00have taken Israel into captivity. He
- 19:03will rise up. They will experience his
- 19:06fury. And I think a lot of times we are
- 19:09uncomfortable with God's fury or anger
- 19:14because really we don't understand God's
- 19:17love. There is no way to have love
- 19:20without anger. Not possible. The only
- 19:24people who can really get me riled up
- 19:27and angry are people who I love. This is
- 19:30why like if you cussing people out on
- 19:33the road that cut you off, something's
- 19:35wrong with you. If strangers can get you
- 19:38mad, something's wrong. You You actually
- 19:40have an anger problem. Strangers
- 19:42shouldn't be able to get you upset. Only
- 19:44the people who you love should be able
- 19:48to get you mad because you love them.
- 19:50Like, so let's think about this. If I
- 19:53went to my house and god forbid I found
- 19:57my wife's body dead and my son, you
- 20:00know, they've been gunned down and my
- 20:02response was, "Yeah, it's okay. you
- 20:04know, I'll get another son. I'll get
- 20:06another wife. You You would want to get
- 20:08me psychologically evaluated. You'd
- 20:10question whether or not I actually loved
- 20:12my wife or loved my son. Why? Because in
- 20:15the presence of great evil, there should
- 20:18be great vengeance. In the presence of
- 20:21great evil, there should be great fury.
- 20:25So, a lot of times we're uncomfortable
- 20:26with God's anger. We're uncomfortable
- 20:28with his fury because actually we don't
- 20:30understand the depth of his love. It is
- 20:32his love that causes him to be jealous.
- 20:36And why is it that God can be jealous
- 20:38and nobody else can? Is because God owns
- 20:42you. The same way that I couldn't be
- 20:45jealous when I was a boyfriend, but the
- 20:47moment I became a husband, now me and my
- 20:50wife belong to each other. I'm hers.
- 20:53She's mine. I can only be jealous if I'm
- 20:57jealous over someone who is actually
- 21:01mine. and I am actually theirs. If if if
- 21:06my wife if for whatever reason we got
- 21:08divorced and she got remarried and her
- 21:12new husband was trying to get my son to
- 21:15call him dad, I'd be like, "You better
- 21:17get up out of here. That's my son." And
- 21:20there's a certain jealousy that I'm
- 21:23going to have that is normal and natural
- 21:27cuz that boy's mine. He's mine.
- 21:31Family, the wait is over. My brand new
- 21:34book, Crushing Chaos, is out now and
- 21:38available everywhere books are sold
- 21:41literally today. I walked into a Barnes
- 21:44& Noble and I signed a bunch of copies
- 21:46at a physical location. So, you can grab
- 21:49this book at a physical Barnes & Noble
- 21:52or you can go to a Books a Million or
- 21:54Amazon or anywhere books are sold and
- 21:57grab a copy. If you enjoy reading the
- 22:00Bible from an ancient perspective, if
- 22:03you understand that the beauty of
- 22:05scripture is actually knowing it in
- 22:07context, then you'll love this book. And
- 22:10if there's any chaos in your personal
- 22:12life, I think that reading the Bible
- 22:15from an ancient perspective can actually
- 22:17help to crush the chaos in your life. I
- 22:19think this book is going to be a New
- 22:21York Times bestseller. I really do. I
- 22:23think we wrote a good one. I think you
- 22:25should get a copy today. All right, back
- 22:28to the episode. It's one time I I kind
- 22:32of adopted one of the kids at the youth
- 22:34group as a spiritual son. And uh his
- 22:36name is Jayon. And one time I took Jay
- 22:38on to the barber shop and he was like, I
- 22:40don't want a haircut. And I was like, I
- 22:42don't care what you want. You're done
- 22:44walking around here like you don't like
- 22:46nobody like you don't belong to nobody.
- 22:48I'm taking you to get your haircut cuz
- 22:50if I'm going to be a spiritual father in
- 22:52your life, you need to look like
- 22:53somebody takes care of you. You can't
- 22:56look homeless. If you want to look
- 22:57homeless, then you don't you're not
- 22:59going to have a spiritual father. Part
- 23:02of having a dad is a dad makes sure that
- 23:06you look like you belong to somebody
- 23:08when you're out in public. Okay? And so
- 23:11Psalm 94 fits under the greater
- 23:15umbrella, the fact that Yahweh is a king
- 23:19according to the template of
- 23:21Deuteronomy, which means that he's in a
- 23:23covenant relationship with Israel,
- 23:25whereby he's not only king and susarin,
- 23:28but also husband. All right, Psalm 95.
- 23:33We don't even have enough time for Psalm
- 23:3495. Psalm 95 is divided in half. Verses
- 23:381-7 again continues the theme of of the
- 23:41fact that the Lord reigns. Yahweh
- 23:43reigns. So verses 1-7 talk about the
- 23:46enthronement of Yahweh. Come and bow
- 23:49before him. He's enthroned. And then
- 23:52verses 8 through 11 are essentially
- 23:54giving a warning saying cuz remember
- 23:57your ancestors sucked at this. Okay?
- 24:00Failed. They failed to enter God's rest.
- 24:03God said, "Go up to the land of Canaan
- 24:05and take it, for I've given it to you."
- 24:08And they decided to not act like Yahweh
- 24:10was king. And how do you act like Yahweh
- 24:12is not king? By disobeying orders. They
- 24:16did not obey God's orders. They decided
- 24:19to go rogue. And so, they failed to
- 24:22enter God's rest. And so, verses 8
- 24:24through 11 are essentially saying, "Hey,
- 24:27every generation is at the crossroads.
- 24:29Don't act like your ancestors. Be
- 24:32faithful. Be like David. Recognize that
- 24:36Yahweh is king. What's our Thomas truth
- 24:39for the day? Thomas truth is pretty
- 24:42simple. It's me to ask you this
- 24:44question. What is the gospel? Because
- 24:46the theme of these psalms is that Yahweh
- 24:51is king. That Yahweh reigns. That Yahweh
- 24:55reigns. He sits enthroned as king over
- 24:58the earth and over Israel. Which really
- 25:01caused me to ask the question, well,
- 25:02what does that have to do with you and I
- 25:04today as New Testament believers? Well,
- 25:06I need to then ask you this question.
- 25:08What is the gospel? Cuz a lot of people
- 25:10really don't know what the gospel is.
- 25:12They think that the gospel is that Jesus
- 25:14Christ died for the remission of your
- 25:16sins. So, they preach Jesus as savior.
- 25:19But really, that's not the gospel. The
- 25:21gospel is this simple message. It can be
- 25:23found in three words. Jesus is king.
- 25:26He's king. He's lord. He reigns. So the
- 25:29fact that Yahweh reigns isn't as
- 25:31relevant for the audience of Psalm 93,
- 25:3594, 95. Actually, every Christian needs
- 25:38to live under the understanding that
- 25:40Yahweh not only was king, but that he is
- 25:44king and that Jesus has a throne next to
- 25:50the father and that he is enthroned as
- 25:52king. And the only reason he can be
- 25:55savior is because he is first king.
- 25:58Right? I I couldn't die for your sins.
- 26:00Why? Because I'm not the king of the
- 26:02universe.
- 26:03Only the son of God could be savior
- 26:07because only the son of God is king. And
- 26:10the nature of the gospel message is this
- 26:13Jesus is king. Sometimes when all we do
- 26:16is advertise Jesus as savior, what that
- 26:19does is it gets converts and we think
- 26:22that the gospel is just a form of
- 26:23evangelism for new converts. But really
- 26:26the gospel message is for Christians and
- 26:28non-Christians because the gospel
- 26:29message is Jesus is king. And in the
- 26:32same way that a non-Christian needs to
- 26:34surrender their life to the lordship of
- 26:35Jesus, there are always areas where
- 26:38Christians need to surrender their
- 26:40lives, our lives, to the lordship of
- 26:43King Jesus. Maybe there's unforgiveness
- 26:46in your life, which means that area of
- 26:48your emotions has not been surrendered
- 26:51to the lordship of Jesus. Maybe you
- 26:53don't tithe. Well, that means that area
- 26:55of your life has yet to be surrendered
- 26:57to the kingship, the lordship of King
- 26:59Jesus. Maybe there's areas where you
- 27:02don't trust him as king. And I just hate
- 27:06to be the bearer of bad news, but you
- 27:08don't get to access him as savior if you
- 27:11don't surrender to him as king. And so
- 27:14this idea that Yahweh reigns and that
- 27:17right now he's reigning through his son
- 27:20Jesus who is king. At the mention of
- 27:24that name, every knee will bow and every
- 27:25tongue will confess. and me and you get
- 27:28the option of bowing our knee and
- 27:31kissing the ring and confessing his
- 27:33name. But many won't get the option of
- 27:35doing that. They'll have to do it by
- 27:37force. And so my question to you today
- 27:39is this. Is he really king of every area
- 27:42of your life? Is he king over your
- 27:44words? Is he king over your time
- 27:46management? Is he king over your
- 27:48emotions? Is he king when you're at at
- 27:50your at your job? Or have you relegated
- 27:53to him to Sunday mornings? Is he king?
- 27:58Because the job of the believer is to
- 28:00continue to live as though he is king.
- 28:03He's king regardless. But just like in
- 28:06the time of the judges, in the time of
- 28:07Saul, Yahweh was king, but they weren't
- 28:10living like he was. And then David made
- 28:12sure that they that they saw Yahweh as
- 28:16king. Hopefully, I can be a David of
- 28:18sorts. That will remind you he is king,
- 28:22but whether or not you're living
- 28:23surrendered is a whole another question.
- 28:25And that's not just true in the context
- 28:28of Psalm 9394,95.
- 28:30That is a timeless truth and I hope it
- 28:32challenges you today. All right,
- 28:34tomorrow we got day 284.
