- 0:24family. Welcome to day 278 here on the
- 0:27Bible department podcast. Today we are
- 0:30looking at Psalms 79, 80, and 81. We got
- 0:34three more Psalms of ASAF. ASAP Rocky.
- 0:39Come on. We need to have a whole segment
- 0:41that's called ASAP Rocky. I I started
- 0:43saying it a couple days ago, now I can't
- 0:44stop saying it. Anyway, we're going to
- 0:46be looking at three psalms today. If you
- 0:48haven't done the reading, this is a good
- 0:50spot to stop the video, pause the audio,
- 0:54go get the reading done. All right. Our
- 0:56goal, our desire here at the Bible
- 0:59department is not to replace your daily
- 1:02Bible reading. It's actually to enhance
- 1:04your daily Bible reading. We want people
- 1:06connecting with the word. So, get the
- 1:08reading done. We got three psalms that
- 1:10we're going to be looking at today. If
- 1:12you have read these three psalms, then
- 1:16hopefully I can provide context, some
- 1:18nerdy nuggets, and a timeless truth that
- 1:20will help bring what you read to life.
- 1:23With no further ado, let's dive in.
- 1:26Psalm 79. As soon as you start reading
- 1:29Psalm 79, I'll I'll start reading it uh
- 1:31for you. Says, "Oh God, the nations have
- 1:34invaded your inheritance. They have
- 1:36defiled your holy temple. They have
- 1:38reduced Jerusalem to rubble. Immediately
- 1:42it is clear what this is about. There's
- 1:44a psalm of corporate lament concerning
- 1:46what? The fall of Jerusalem. The
- 1:49destruction of Jerusalem. We just had a
- 1:52psalm like this in Psalm 74. Okay, if
- 1:55you remember whether that was yesterday
- 1:57or the day before that, I think it was
- 1:58two days ago. Okay, we had uh Psalm 74
- 2:02was a psalm of corporate lament over the
- 2:05fall of Jerusalem. Okay. So, Psalm 79,
- 2:10very, very, very similar in content and
- 2:13in context to Psalm 74. And this is a
- 2:17twin psalm to Psalm 137. Okay? So, what
- 2:22happens is Jerusalem falls and Psalm 137
- 2:26is going to be the exiles who are now in
- 2:30Babylon. Okay? They are going to write a
- 2:33corporate psalm of lament lamenting the
- 2:36fall of Jerusalem from their vantage
- 2:38point while they are off in exile. Now
- 2:40this is a twin psalm to that psalm
- 2:43because in Psalm 79 this is not written
- 2:46by exiles who got out. This is written
- 2:49by survivors who were locked in or
- 2:53trapped in. So these are people who are
- 2:56going to remain in Jerusalem. They
- 2:58survived the fall of Jerusalem, but they
- 3:02have not gotten carded off in exile. And
- 3:04so these are twin psalms written about
- 3:06the same event from two different groups
- 3:09of people. All right, Psalm 80. Okay,
- 3:12Psalm 80 is very similar in tone and
- 3:16tamber to Psalm 79. And Psalm 80 is all
- 3:21about the fall of Samaria. Remember
- 3:25Jerusalem is the capital of the southern
- 3:28kingdom of Judah and Samaria is the
- 3:32capital of the northern kingdom of
- 3:35Israel. So Psalm 80 is about the fall of
- 3:39Samaria in the north. Remember Jerusalem
- 3:43is going to fall uh60
- 3:48years after Samaria falls. Samaria is
- 3:51going to fall in 7:22 BC. And then uh
- 3:54Jerusalem is going to fall later in 586
- 3:57BC. Now Psalm 80 is written by the
- 4:01southern Judahites really or Jews. Okay,
- 4:05those people who live in Judah who are
- 4:08mourning the destruction of their
- 4:11northern neighbors and really they're
- 4:14the same ethnic people group. Uh the
- 4:17monarchy or the kingdoms have been split
- 4:19into two. They were united under David
- 4:21and Solomon. But then by the time we got
- 4:24to that third generation, the kingdom is
- 4:27split with Judah in the south south and
- 4:30uh Israel, the lost northern tribes
- 4:33essentially in the north. And so Psalm
- 4:3680 is not written from the perspective
- 4:39of northern Israelites. It's written
- 4:42from the perspective of of the southern
- 4:45tribe of Judah mourning the loss of
- 4:48their northern brother. Okay. Uh they
- 4:51they are sad that Samaria has fallen up
- 4:53in the north. All right. And then last
- 4:55we're going to get Psalm 81. Okay. And
- 4:58this Psalm is a psalm of celebration. Uh
- 5:01so we get two psalms of mourning, two
- 5:03psalms of lament. Okay. Psalm 79 and
- 5:07Psalm 80 are both going to be psalms of
- 5:09lament. But then it's almost like in the
- 5:12middle of a cloudy day, the sun breaks
- 5:14through and begins to shine and we're
- 5:16going to get a psalm of celebration. Not
- 5:18just any psalm of celebration, a psalm
- 5:21that is to be sang during the feast of
- 5:25tabernacles. Okay? And it starts out as
- 5:29such. Starts out with these words. Okay?
- 5:31Psalm 81 verse1. Sing for joy to God our
- 5:36strength. Okay? shout aloud to the God
- 5:39of Jacob. Okay, so we go from mourning,
- 5:42lamenting, grieving, sadness for two
- 5:46psalms right into sing for joy. Okay, so
- 5:50this psalm is not just a random psalm,
- 5:53but it's connected to the feast of
- 5:56tabernacles. All right, let's context
- 5:59for the three psalms that we're looking
- 6:00at today. Let's dive into some nerdy
- 6:03nuggets. All right, let's tackle Psalm
- 6:0679. Here's a psalm of corporate lament.
- 6:08Okay, we are going to get very very very
- 6:11similar language. Okay, in Psalm 79 as
- 6:15we are going to get in the book of
- 6:17lamentations, which if you think about
- 6:19it, I mean that makes sense. Uh Psalm 79
- 6:23is a psalm of corporate lament.
- 6:25Lamentations is a psalm of maybe
- 6:28individual lament, but it's still
- 6:30lament. I mean, most people think it's
- 6:32written by Jeremiah, okay? And Jeremiah
- 6:34is lamenting the fall of Jerusalem.
- 6:36Psalm 79 sounds very very similar to
- 6:39lamentations. Let's actually compare a
- 6:41verse. Okay. Psalm 79 verse5 says these
- 6:45words. How long Lord will you be angry?
- 6:48Forever. Okay. Psalm 79:5
- 6:52is questioning like well Lord like how
- 6:54long like how long you going to be angry
- 6:56with us. It says it like this in my
- 6:57Bible. How long Lord will you be angry?
- 7:00Forever. How long will your jealousy
- 7:02burn like fire? And then we're going to
- 7:05read Lamentations 5:22 says this. Unless
- 7:09you have utterly rejected us and you
- 7:11remain exceedingly angry with us. You
- 7:14can see uh just questions around how
- 7:17long are you going to be angry with us?
- 7:18Okay, don't be angry with us forever.
- 7:20Okay, this literally echoes of
- 7:23lamentations are all over Psalm 79. Now
- 7:28there's also echoes of Jeremiah,
- 7:31Habachok, and Obadiah. Now, one of the
- 7:34things that begins to happen, Asaf in
- 7:36Psalm 79 is asking Yahweh questions.
- 7:40Okay? The writing of this time all share
- 7:43this theme. The acknowledgment of the
- 7:45sin of Israel and Judah, the acceptance
- 7:48of God's wrath on them as punishment,
- 7:51but then the cry out of how long, like
- 7:53how long is this going to last? How long
- 7:55are you going to be angry with us?
- 7:56What's interesting, of course, is that
- 7:59Jeremiah has already answered this
- 8:02question. Obviously, they're fulfilled.
- 8:03They're familiar with Jeremiah's
- 8:05writings because Psalm 79 sounds so much
- 8:07like limitations. Okay, Jeremiah
- 8:10answered that question in a quote we
- 8:11often use for encouragement. We love
- 8:14this on the Christian coffee mugs. You
- 8:15know what I'm saying? Put put a verse of
- 8:17scripture on the coffee mugs out of
- 8:19context, of course. Okay? And it's
- 8:21Jeremiah chapter 29:11. And I'll say
- 8:24Jeremiah chapter 29:11 to you out of
- 8:25context. And then we're going to add
- 8:27verse 10 says, "For I know the plans I
- 8:29have for you, declares Yahweh, plans for
- 8:32welfare and not for evil to give you
- 8:34hope in a future." All right, that's
- 8:35verse 11. It's the famous verse. But
- 8:37actually, here's what God says in verse
- 8:4010. For thus Yahweh, for thus says
- 8:43Yahweh, when 70 years are completed for
- 8:46Babylon, I will visit you and I will
- 8:49fulfill to you my promise and bring you
- 8:53back to this place. For I know the plans
- 8:56I have for you, declares Yahweh. Plans
- 8:59to prosper you, not to harm you, plans
- 9:00to give you a hope in a future. So the
- 9:02plans that God has is that he's going to
- 9:04bring the people out of Babylonian exile
- 9:08after 70 years and bring them back to
- 9:10Jerusalem. So they're asking a question
- 9:12that God has already provided the answer
- 9:14to. This theme is not going to stop.
- 9:18Okay. The cry to repay their enemies for
- 9:21destroying Jerusalem and their neighbors
- 9:23for betraying them have also already
- 9:26been answered. Okay. This is Psalm 79
- 9:29verse 6. Pour out your wrath on the
- 9:31nations that do not acknowledge you.
- 9:34It's like, God, you used like heathens
- 9:37to like punish us. Pour out your wrath
- 9:39on them. They don't know you. They don't
- 9:41call on your name, for they have
- 9:43devoured Jacob and devastated the
- 9:45homeland. Do not hold against us the
- 9:47sins of past generations. So, not only
- 9:50are they going to say, "Please like deal
- 9:52with the nations. They bring bring your
- 9:55judgment on the nations. But then it's
- 9:58going to move to pay back verse 12, pay
- 10:01back into the laps of our neighbors
- 10:04seven times the contempt they have
- 10:06hurled at you, Lord. Now, here's what's
- 10:09fascinating is that God has already
- 10:12answered both of those questions. How am
- 10:14I going to judge the nations? And how am
- 10:16I going to judge your neighbors in in
- 10:18the prophets? Okay, so I'll read this to
- 10:20you. The cry to repay their enemies for
- 10:23destroying Jerusalem and their neighbors
- 10:25for betraying them have already been
- 10:27answered. Just like the question of how
- 10:29long are you going to be angry with us?
- 10:31That's already been answered. Habacook
- 10:33decades before this psalm told of how
- 10:37Yahweh's wrath would fall on Babylon
- 10:40too. And Obadiah was also writing at
- 10:43this time and was clear that Edom,
- 10:46Judah's neighbor and brother, would pay
- 10:49for betraying them. The people were
- 10:52crying out to Yahweh for answers he had
- 10:54already given them. Man, I wish that was
- 10:57a Thomas truth for the day. I mean, I
- 10:59guess it could be a bonus Thomas truth
- 11:01because there are people who ask God for
- 11:03questions that he's already answered.
- 11:05This happens all the time, actually.
- 11:07people who ask God for answers when
- 11:10God's already given us answers to said
- 11:13questions in the Bible. And I pray that
- 11:16that's why you're spending a year with
- 11:18the word of God and and with us so that
- 11:21you could know what the Bible says so
- 11:23that you're not asking God redundant
- 11:25questions. Now, is God gracious and kind
- 11:28and awesome? And does he provide answers
- 11:31even when he's already given those
- 11:33answers? Yeah, he does. He does. But I
- 11:36don't want to be someone who is in a
- 11:39relationship with the Lord where I'm
- 11:40asking him a bunch of stuff he's already
- 11:42answered. Okay? I want to know the word
- 11:45well enough to begin to have to provide
- 11:48context when I talk to God. Okay,
- 11:51family. The wait is over. My brand new
- 11:54book, Crushing Chaos, is out now and
- 11:58available everywhere books are sold.
- 12:01Literally today, I walked into a Barnes
- 12:04& Noble and I signed a bunch of copies
- 12:06at a physical location. So, you can grab
- 12:09this book at a physical Barnes & Noble
- 12:11or you can go to a Books a Million or
- 12:14Amazon or anywhere books are sold and
- 12:17grab a copy. If you enjoy reading the
- 12:20Bible from an ancient perspective, if
- 12:23you understand that the beauty of
- 12:25scripture is actually knowing it in
- 12:27context, then you'll love this book. And
- 12:30if there's any chaos in your personal
- 12:32life, I think that reading the Bible
- 12:34from an ancient perspective can actually
- 12:36help to crush the chaos in your life. I
- 12:39think this book is going to be a New
- 12:40York Times bestseller. I really do. I
- 12:43think we wrote a good one. I think you
- 12:45should get a copy today. All right, back
- 12:48to the episode. Psalm 80. Okay, some
- 12:51nerdy nuggets from Psalm 80. This is a
- 12:53corporate lament that gave voice to the
- 12:55shock where in Judah, southern kingdom
- 12:59of Judah when Israel, the northern
- 13:02kingdom of Israel fell to the Assyrians.
- 13:04Okay, this is 7:22 BC. It shows that
- 13:08even then the prayer was going out for
- 13:11Yahweh to restore Israel to unite north
- 13:14and south again and bring the lost
- 13:17tribes home. It shows that even though
- 13:20the two nations had split long before
- 13:22and had been at war many times, by the
- 13:25way, the last time only a few years
- 13:27before Samaria fell, by the way, there
- 13:30still was this sense in Judah that
- 13:33Israel was still all 12 tribes together.
- 13:37This hope that uh that we would all be
- 13:40together. So the refrain throughout the
- 13:43psalm is a corporate one that speaks for
- 13:46all Israel and calls all of Israel back,
- 13:49not just the southern kingdom of Judah,
- 13:51but all of Israel back to the ironic
- 13:54blessing given to all 12 tribes at the
- 13:56beginning of the nation story. So what
- 13:58we're going to see is in Psalm 80:3,
- 14:01Psalm 80:7, and Psalm 80:1 19, we're
- 14:04going to get the ironic blessing
- 14:06repeated over and over and over. Restore
- 14:09us, oh God of hosts. Let your face shine
- 14:12that we might be saved. This connection
- 14:15is seen also in the reign of Hezekiah
- 14:18that followed the fall of Samaria. You
- 14:20can read about this or what Hezekiah
- 14:22does in the wake of the fall Samaria. 2
- 14:25Chronicles 30:1 all the way to verse
- 14:28maybe 10. Okay, it shows that Hezekiah
- 14:31offered the remnant left in Israel the
- 14:34opportunity to join the south, that's
- 14:36Judah, in celebrating Passover, but was
- 14:40rebuffed.
- 14:42But also during his reign, the walls of
- 14:45Jerusalem were rebuilt and extended,
- 14:48probably to now surround the growing
- 14:50city, a city that grew mostly to house
- 14:54the refugees that had fled from the fall
- 14:57of Israel, the remnant of Israel that
- 15:01listened to the prophets and psalms and
- 15:04returned to David, which means moving to
- 15:07Jerusalem. Return to David and Zion. Uh,
- 15:10the choices of Yahweh were spared. Okay.
- 15:15Now, Psalm 81. Love Psalm 81. This psalm
- 15:19is a nice break in all of the lamenting.
- 15:22Okay. This psalm is a festal festive
- 15:26psalm. And you can see it in the first
- 15:28few verses. Okay. Sing aloud to God our
- 15:30strength. Shout for joy to the God of
- 15:33Jacob. Raise a song. Sound the
- 15:34tambourine. The sweet liar with the
- 15:37harp. Blow the trumpet at the new moon.
- 15:39at the full moon on our feast day. So
- 15:42this is a feast day psalm. Okay. Now
- 15:45what does the feast of tabernacles kind
- 15:48of celebrate? Well, the feast of
- 15:50tabernacles, remember the word
- 15:51tabernacle means to dwell. Okay. It
- 15:54means to tent. It's kind of like God's
- 15:57tent where where he dwells is called the
- 16:00tabernacle. And it's like tent kind of
- 16:02becomes a word like not only are we in a
- 16:05tent, but God has set up his tent
- 16:07amongst us. like he's tenting with us.
- 16:10That like he's camping with us. He's
- 16:11dwelling with us. Okay. So, to
- 16:13tabernacle is like a verb, but the
- 16:16tabernacle is the tent that God is
- 16:19tabernacling in. I hope you get it. All
- 16:21right? And so, the feast of tabernacles
- 16:24celebrates God's journey with his people
- 16:27through the Exodus or through the
- 16:30desert. Everything from the Red Sea to
- 16:32Mount Si. Okay. This psalm of
- 16:35celebration was sung at the feast of
- 16:36tabernacles sung to a tune all about
- 16:39making wine. Wine that is usually
- 16:42associated with weddings and making the
- 16:44heart glad. And this is a psalm with
- 16:47psalm for celebration but a serious
- 16:51challenge. It recalls just like the
- 16:53festival the time they spent in the
- 16:55wilderness being fed and led by Yahweh.
- 16:59It is a celebration of that past but
- 17:03also a warning and a challenge. Even
- 17:07then there were those who did not follow
- 17:10who were not satisfied with the food God
- 17:13fed them. And now the psalmist gives
- 17:16voice to God that again the people do
- 17:20not listen. And oh that they would
- 17:24listen again. This is a psalm then that
- 17:28looks back to a time when God led and
- 17:31fed the people and protected them from
- 17:34their enemies and then challenges those
- 17:37who sang it to come back home. It's a
- 17:41call to be led and fed by Yahweh once
- 17:44again or once more. All right, let's get
- 17:47into our Thomas truth for the day.
- 17:49That's all the nerdy nuggets I have for
- 17:50you. Here's our Thomas truth. Two big
- 17:52themes that I want us to talk about.
- 17:54Unity is one of them. And then the
- 17:57desire to see prodigals return home is
- 18:00the second one. Okay. I am struck by the
- 18:03solidarity that the remnant in Judah
- 18:05show to their brothers and their sisters
- 18:08in the north. So often when the story is
- 18:10told, the focus is on Israel and how the
- 18:13northern kingdom of Israel had just gone
- 18:15astray. They've rejected Yahweh and
- 18:17chosen polluted and corrupted worship
- 18:20that has led to the worship of foreign
- 18:22gods and nations. But here in Psalm 80,
- 18:26we hear the cry of those loyal to Yahweh
- 18:29in the south that were crying out for
- 18:33their weward brothers and sisters who
- 18:36even at this point of the destruction,
- 18:38the judgment on the north were crying
- 18:41out for salvation and that God would
- 18:45restore the whole country. This is a
- 18:48huge lesson for us for how we look to
- 18:52our brothers and sisters that may have
- 18:54gone astray. I know I personally know
- 18:58tons of people who were strong
- 19:00Christians 5, 7, 10 years ago and have
- 19:05walked away from the faith. So, not only
- 19:07is this, you know, is Psalm 80 a
- 19:12remarkable psalm, but it's the it's the
- 19:15cry. It's the song of the tribe of Judah
- 19:20who's just broken about how the northern
- 19:23kingdom of Israel has gone astray. And
- 19:26man, I want to have that same heart when
- 19:28people that I went to Bible college
- 19:30with, people that I went to seminary
- 19:31with, are no longer walking with God,
- 19:33but they sign up not only to love Jesus,
- 19:36but to be in full-time ministry. And um
- 19:38sometimes I think we can have this
- 19:40attitude, at least I have. I don't want
- 19:42to project this onto you, that I'm like,
- 19:44if anybody rejects Jesus, then forget
- 19:47them. Like I can kind of have like a
- 19:50you're Judas to me. You're dead to me.
- 19:52Like if you're a Christian and then you
- 19:54stop following God, like screw you, man.
- 19:57Like you're dead to me. But that's not
- 19:59the heart that that the psalmist have in
- 20:02Psalm 80. And today I was challenged
- 20:04like as I began to read and I I began to
- 20:07go man not only do I need to fight for
- 20:09unity in church because that was God's
- 20:12goal that the northern kingdom of Israel
- 20:14and the southern kingdom of Judah would
- 20:15be united as one. God's goal was never
- 20:18for them to be divided. Okay. So number
- 20:20one I think we can take a timeless truth
- 20:22out of this and say God's heart's unity.
- 20:25God God literally has created the body
- 20:29of Christ, the church for unity. And we
- 20:31have to fight to maintain it. Unity
- 20:33doesn't just happen. Doesn't happen by
- 20:35default. It has to happen by design. But
- 20:37then second, man, am I actively praying
- 20:40for those who have fallen away from the
- 20:41faith? Am I actively trying to re-engage
- 20:45or rewitness those who have fallen away
- 20:47from the faith? And sometimes I can just
- 20:50have such a bad attitude when it comes
- 20:52to exchristians. I can be very gangster
- 20:56like like you never loved God. You know
- 20:58what I'm saying? Like I like I don't
- 21:00care. And that's just not the heart that
- 21:04we see on display in Psalm 80. And I
- 21:07want to be more like Psalm 80. I want my
- 21:11heart to break. And I want to really cry
- 21:13out to God that he would intervene and
- 21:16that he would show himself strong in the
- 21:18lives of people who were Christians at
- 21:20one point and then for whatever reason
- 21:22walked away from the faith. That's not
- 21:24only true for the psalmist in Psalm 80.
- 21:27That's true for you and I. And today,
- 21:29honestly, it's it's something that's
- 21:31convicting me. Like, I I in the middle
- 21:35of watching my brothers and sisters in
- 21:38Christ who are walked away from Christ,
- 21:40in the middle of seeing their lives fall
- 21:42apart, I shouldn't be rejoicing. I
- 21:45shouldn't be saying, "Well, that's what
- 21:46they get for for for announcing Jesus.
- 21:49my heart should be broken and I should
- 21:51have the heart partial that says, "I
- 21:53know that that that that judgment is
- 21:56what they deserve. I know that wrath is
- 21:58what they deserve, but God, would you
- 22:00please please please win them back to
- 22:02you? God, would you please allow me to
- 22:04be a good witness?" Um, and I'm just
- 22:07impressed that the that the remnant in
- 22:11the southern kingdom of Judah would
- 22:12write a whole psalm about the fall of
- 22:15Samaria up in the north that uh that it
- 22:17impacted them, that it affected them,
- 22:19that it shook them up. That's just so
- 22:22reputable and I love it. And so, our
- 22:24timeless truth for the day is that God
- 22:27loves unity, that we should be praying
- 22:29for unity and doing everything in our
- 22:31power to make unity possible. And then
- 22:34number two is that we should be uh
- 22:37praying for those who have fallen away
- 22:39from the faith and actively engaging
- 22:41them because um nobody is beyond hope.
- 22:46Okay? And if God if God allowed Psalm 80
- 22:49to be in the Bible, then maybe God would
- 22:52allow some of my prayers for people who
- 22:55don't know him anymore, but that used to
- 22:57know him to go not unanswered, but to to
- 23:00be answered. Okay? And I've got people
- 23:02in mind, and I bet you do, too. All
- 23:04right, that's our timeless truth for the
- 23:06day, which means we're at the end of the
- 23:08episode, family. I'll see you tomorrow
