- 0:00Hey Bible nerds, this is Dr. Manny
- 0:02Orango. Welcome to the Bible department
- 0:04podcast powered by Arma. We are walking

- 0:24family. Welcome to day 277.
- 0:27We are diving in to three more Psalms of
- 0:31Asaf. We are now in book three of the
- 0:35Psalms. And we got three Psalms of our
- 0:38man Asaf Rocky. Okay, ASAP with the
- 0:41Psalms. Today we got Psalms 76,77
- 0:45and 78. If you haven't done the reading,
- 0:48uh this is a good time to stop the
- 0:50video, pause the audio, go get the
- 0:52reading done so that you can actually
- 0:54have context for what we are talking
- 0:57about here on today's episode. If you
- 0:59have done the reading, then I hope that
- 1:02just doing the reading by itself with no
- 1:05video, no explanation, no context clues,
- 1:08no nerdy nuggets, no timeless truth, I
- 1:10hope that the reading alone edified your
- 1:13spirit. It's building your faith. and
- 1:16helping you fall in love with the word
- 1:18of God in a deeper way. All right, like
- 1:22every episode, I'm going to give context
- 1:24and then I'll give nerdy nuggets. I'll
- 1:26try to give a couple for each Psalm and
- 1:28then I'll give a timeless truth. I'm
- 1:30really excited about the timeless truth
- 1:31for today's episode. So, context clues,
- 1:35let's dive in. Psalm 76, we've got a
- 1:39generic,
- 1:40I would say a general psalm of praise.
- 1:42All right, this is a psalm of praise or
- 1:45worship and again by our good guy Asaf.
- 1:48If you need more context on who Asaf is,
- 1:51then you can watch I believe it was
- 1:54yesterday's episode where we really
- 1:55talked about Asaf as a character and the
- 1:58context of when he got brought up in 1st
- 2:01Chronicles 16:5 and 2 Chronicles 5:12.
- 2:05Okay. Uh Psalm 77. This is a psalm of
- 2:09individual lament. a psalm of individual
- 2:12lament and we are going to look at uh
- 2:15what that means in a little bit. Now
- 2:17with Psalm 77 we get a a a interesting
- 2:22little nugget. Okay, it's not a nerdy
- 2:25nugget but more like a context nugget if
- 2:27that if we if we can allow that. Um it's
- 2:30going to be according to Jedathan. Okay,
- 2:32so we're going to get a name here and
- 2:34Jonathan appears in two chapters of 1
- 2:36Chronicles. Okay. 1st Chronicles 16:es
- 2:4041-42.
- 2:42He along with Hemon were instructed to
- 2:44lead worship as Zadok and the rest of
- 2:47the priests were sacrificing. He and
- 2:49Hemon played trumpets and symbols and
- 2:51led the people in songs of worship
- 2:53alongside the sacrifices. In 1
- 2:55Chronicles 25:es 1:3 again, okay,
- 3:00Jonathan uh is mentioned alongside Hemon
- 3:03and by one of the other great psalm
- 3:05writers, Asaf. Okay, so we get this
- 3:07pairing Asaf and Jedithan. They and
- 3:10their sons are again instructed to lead
- 3:12worship alongside the priests. This
- 3:14worship is said to prophesy, which I
- 3:17could get into a whole lesson on how
- 3:18worship is prophecy. I think that there
- 3:20are a lot of worship leaders who
- 3:22actually are operating in a prophetic
- 3:23gift. I don't want to get too far on a
- 3:25tangent, but uh the Bible teaches us in
- 3:27the New Testament, Paul writes that to
- 3:30the church, Christ, Jesus Christ gave
- 3:33five gifts. And those gifts are apostle,
- 3:36prophet, evangelist, uh, teacher, and
- 3:39pastor. The worship leader is not one of
- 3:41those. So, I always love to teach
- 3:43worship leaders that you're probably
- 3:45operating in a teaching gift, a pastoral
- 3:47gift, an evangelistic gift, a prophetic
- 3:50gift, or an apostolic gift. And I
- 3:52actually have found that a lot of
- 3:53worship leaders are actually operating
- 3:55in a prophetic gift. That's why they can
- 3:59lead uh spontaneously so well, jumping
- 4:02from song to song. They really do have a
- 4:04prophetic gifting. And and even when we
- 4:08see characters in the Bible like Elijah
- 4:10and Elisha needing to prophesy, they
- 4:13will actually say like, "Well, go get
- 4:15someone who can play." I think that
- 4:17music has a prophetic nature to it. And
- 4:22um yeah, I don't think that's just an
- 4:23emotional thing. Now, I know there are
- 4:25super cynical people on the internet who
- 4:29are like, "Yeah, they're emotionally
- 4:30manipulating you by how they play music
- 4:32at church." And it's like, that's not
- 4:34emotional manipulation. That's that's
- 4:37invoking the power of the Holy Spirit
- 4:39actually to help move on the hearts of
- 4:41people to make godly decisions. So yeah,
- 4:44I mean you could see that as cynically
- 4:46or you could see it through the lens of
- 4:48cynicism like yeah they play the keys at
- 4:51the end of the sermon so that you could
- 4:53you know be emotionally manipulated into
- 4:55making a decision or it's that the
- 4:58spirit of prophecy really moves through
- 5:01instrumentation and music and um God has
- 5:05actually given us a massive green light
- 5:07to use that to help steer people towards
- 5:11godly decisions. There is a nonsynical
- 5:14way to think about this exact same
- 5:16content. Okay, back to our guy Jedathan.
- 5:18Jonathan then was a leader of the
- 5:21Levites that David appointed in his
- 5:23reformation and transformation of
- 5:24Israel's worship to Yahweh. the
- 5:26inclusion of this probably older psalm,
- 5:30okay, in this collection book three made
- 5:33in the context of the return to
- 5:35Jerusalem and building of the temple is
- 5:38probably due to its content reassuring
- 5:42the people that once again God is
- 5:45enthroned in Zion and he rules all the
- 5:48world. So that's Psalm 77. So Psalm 77
- 5:52is a psalm of individual event. It's
- 5:55according to Jedithan and 1st Chronicles
- 5:59uh 16 and 1st Chronicles 25 give us
- 6:02context for who Jedithan is. And again I
- 6:05want you to remember that the context of
- 6:08book three for the most part are psalms
- 6:12that have been curated collected from
- 6:16prior generations. But the purpose of
- 6:19the curation is to help the returned
- 6:23exiles to actually be faithful to Yahweh
- 6:27to rebuild their lives. And so we're not
- 6:30just looking at the context of the
- 6:32original psalms and when they were
- 6:34written like what was Asaf thinking or
- 6:37what was Jonathan thinking? No. But what
- 6:40was the editor who assembled these
- 6:42psalms thinking? And why did they
- 6:45assemble these psalms for their
- 6:47audience? Okay, so the audience here
- 6:50isn't Asaf's audience or Jonathan's
- 6:52audience. It's actually Asaf's
- 6:55ancestors audience and the return
- 6:59exiles. I hope that that's clear. I
- 7:01tried to say it as clear as I could.
- 7:03Okay. All right. Psalm 78. This is a
- 7:05wisdom psalm. You probably realize that
- 7:08just by reading it. Okay, this Psalm 78
- 7:11starts like this. My people hear my
- 7:13teaching. That sounds like it's straight
- 7:15out of the book of Proverbs, right? My
- 7:17people hear my teaching. Listen to the
- 7:19words of my mouth. I will open my mouth
- 7:22with a parable. I will utter hidden
- 7:25things, things from of old. Okay, this
- 7:27is wisdom. It's a wisdom song. And just
- 7:30one little tidbit I'm going to add.
- 7:33There's a very pro- David, pro-Judah,
- 7:37pro-Jerusalem,
- 7:38pro-S South agenda here in this in this
- 7:42psalm. And we'll kind of unpack that as
- 7:44we go. But Psalm 78 uh is a wisdom
- 7:48psalm, but the wisdom really is around
- 7:50accepting God's choice for who he's
- 7:54anointed. And that anointed leader is
- 7:56David. And so we're we're going to
- 7:58really dive into how politically charged
- 8:01this psalm is. That's all the context
- 8:03for the content. Uh let's dive into
- 8:07NerdyNuggets. I guess before we do, I'll
- 8:09just say this. Okay. All three of these
- 8:11psalms are designed to encourage the
- 8:13people in their rebuilding efforts and
- 8:17energy. Okay. The context of the group
- 8:21assembling these psalms, not not the
- 8:25people writing the psalms. Okay. The
- 8:26Psalms themselves are very old, but
- 8:29they're being assembled for a new
- 8:31generation. And that generation needs to
- 8:34be spurred on to have the effort and the
- 8:37energy to rebuild their lives, but to
- 8:40also rebuild God's dwelling place, his
- 8:42temple, his city. Okay? Uh so that's the
- 8:45context. All right. Let's get into some
- 8:47nerdy nuggets for Psalm 76. One of the
- 8:50biggest nerdy nuggets I could give you
- 8:52is that Psalm 76 is split into two
- 8:55halves. From verse one to verse six,
- 8:58Zion is the dwelling place of Yahweh.
- 9:01You can actually see the pro-Judah,
- 9:03pro-S South, pro-David agenda right at
- 9:06the top of chapter 76 or Psalm 76 says
- 9:10this. God is enthroned in Judah. Aka,
- 9:14he's not enthroned in any of these
- 9:16northern kingdoms of Israel. He's
- 9:18enthroned in the southern kingdom of
- 9:21Judah. And the fact that the northern
- 9:24kingdom has split the United monarchy
- 9:28and taken people up north is is not
- 9:31God's will. Okay. Where does God dwell?
- 9:34God is renowned where? In Judah. In
- 9:38Israel, his name is great. His tent is
- 9:41in Salem. Okay? Which is the root of the
- 9:46city Jeru Salem. Okay? His tent is in
- 9:51Salem. His dwelling place in Zion. Okay,
- 9:55Zion is the city of Jerusalem. Okay,
- 9:58Zion. So, this is a pro-Zion,
- 10:03pro-Jerusalem, pro-Judah psalm here.
- 10:06Now, this is just a quick just want to
- 10:10help everybody with these three words,
- 10:12okay? Hebrew, Israelite, Jewish. Hebrew,
- 10:17Israelite, Jewish. Here's a nerdy nugget
- 10:19for you. Not in my notes. Just felt like
- 10:22this is probably going to be helpful.
- 10:23The term Hebrew is the oldest of these
- 10:27three words. Hebrew, Israelite, and
- 10:29Jewish. It's the oldest. It refers to
- 10:32descendants of Abraham. Israelites are
- 10:36descendants of Israel. Okay? So, Jacob,
- 10:40whose name got changed to Israel, had 12
- 10:43sons. Those become the 12 tribes of
- 10:46Israel. Why? because they are the 12
- 10:48sons of Israel. Okay? So obviously
- 10:51Abraham lives two generations before the
- 10:55lineage is Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. Okay?
- 10:58And so we don't get Israelites until we
- 11:00get Jacob's sons. So Hebrew is an older
- 11:05term that refers to all of Abraham's
- 11:08descendants. Israelites refer to anyone
- 11:12who identifies as coming from the any of
- 11:14the 12 tribes of Israel. Jews. Okay.
- 11:18Someone who is a Jew is someone who is a
- 11:21descendant of the line of Judah. Okay.
- 11:24So, Hebrews are descendants of Abraham.
- 11:27Israelites are descendants of Israel.
- 11:30And Jews are descendants of Judah. So,
- 11:33when the Bible talks about Hebrews, you
- 11:36can always know that book is probably
- 11:38dated pretty far back. Israel is really
- 11:41talking about the 12 tribes of Israel.
- 11:45And Jews are going to be referring to
- 11:48the descendants of Judah, aka David's
- 11:52descendants. Okay? David is the king of
- 11:54Judah before he becomes the king of
- 11:57Israel. David's like ethnic background
- 12:01is that he's from the tribe of Judah.
- 12:04Judah being one of the 12 sons of
- 12:08Israel. Okay, that's a nerdy nugget that
- 12:10I think will help you out. All right,
- 12:12Psalm 76 is split in half. verses 1-6.
- 12:16Zion is the dwelling place of Yahweh.
- 12:18Okay? His tent, his tabernacle, his
- 12:22temple in Jerusalem, the Holy of Holies
- 12:25is his throne. However, from verse 7 to
- 12:28verse 12, what's clear is that heaven is
- 12:31the throne of Yahweh. So, I want you to
- 12:33begin to see how the psalm is working.
- 12:36The psalm is actually communicating that
- 12:38the temple in Jerusalem is simply a
- 12:41model. It's a type. It's a shadow. It's
- 12:44a symbol. That the reason that the type
- 12:49and shadow even has power is because the
- 12:53real temple which is in heaven has
- 12:55power. And the reason that we have a
- 12:59symbol on the earth is because God wants
- 13:02us to know that the same way that he
- 13:04rules the earth from his holy of holies
- 13:07is the same way that he rules the
- 13:09universe from his throne in heaven. All
- 13:11right? So the the temple in Jerusalem is
- 13:16a archetype of the reality of what's
- 13:20happening in the entire cosmos. All
- 13:22right. Psalm 77. Let me give you a nerdy
- 13:24nugget from Psalm 77. One of the coolest
- 13:28things about Psalm 77 is from verse 16
- 13:31to verse 20, we are going to get a
- 13:34poetic retelling of the Israelites
- 13:36crossing the Red Sea. we are going to
- 13:39receive in those couple of verses
- 13:41ancient mythological.
- 13:44Okay, the reason it's mythological is
- 13:46because we're going to get those themes
- 13:49from Genesis chapter 1 again that God
- 13:53conquers chaos. So, we're going to get
- 13:55words like the very depths were
- 13:58convulsed. Okay, we're going to get
- 13:59words like mighty waters. Okay, we're
- 14:02going to get words like the sea. Okay,
- 14:04we're going to get words like whirlwind.
- 14:07We're going to get words that really
- 14:09communicate not that God made something
- 14:12out of nothing, but that God made order
- 14:15out of chaos. So those chaos words are
- 14:18all uh what we would call mythological.
- 14:22And I'm going to help you to see how
- 14:23this is linked to Leviathan. Okay? But
- 14:26we'll see that in a second. This is
- 14:28ancient mythological spiritual warfare
- 14:30language. Okay? Is a dramatic
- 14:33demonstration of Yahweh's power over
- 14:36chaos. So let's read it together. This
- 14:38is the retelling of God delivering his
- 14:41people through the Red Sea or the Sea of
- 14:44Reeds. The water saw you God. So that's
- 14:47first of all, the water saw you. Okay,
- 14:49this personification of the water.
- 14:51Remember in an ancient world, the sea or
- 14:55the waters or the depths are the abode
- 14:58of chaos. They are personified
- 15:01characters in a drama whereby order
- 15:05continues to overtake chaos. So uh it
- 15:08says the water saw you God. The water
- 15:11saw you and writhed. Okay. The very
- 15:14depths were convulsed. The clouds poured
- 15:17down water. The heavens resounded with
- 15:20thunder. Your arrows flashed back and
- 15:23forth. Your thunder was heard in the
- 15:27whirlwind. Your lightning lit up the
- 15:29world. The earth trembled and quake.
- 15:32Your path led through the sea. The sea,
- 15:36the place of chaos. You made a you made
- 15:38a a path through it. Your way through
- 15:40the mighty waters. Though your
- 15:43footprints were not seen, you led your
- 15:45people like a flock by the hand of Moses
- 15:49and Aaron. Okay, this is a dramatic
- 15:52retelling. Why do we get this
- 15:54mythological ancient dramatic retelling
- 15:59of Yahweh's power over chaos? Well, it
- 16:03is because the people of Judah at this
- 16:07point in juncture, but the people of
- 16:09Israel are experiencing insane amounts
- 16:12of chaos. And so, these psalms are going
- 16:16to have this flavor to them. Okay, I
- 16:18want to actually draw your attention to
- 16:20Ezekiel 29:es 1-4.
- 16:24Ezekiel 29:es 1-4 is also going to give
- 16:27us a dramatic retelling of this exact
- 16:30same moment. Ezekiel 29:es 1-4. And it's
- 16:33good that we would read the actual
- 16:37events happening in in Exodus, I think
- 16:40it's Exodus 15, it's the crossing of the
- 16:42Red Sea. I will fact check myself really
- 16:45quickly. Exodus 14 is the crossing and
- 16:49then Exodus 15 is we get the crossing
- 16:52talked about in song form through Moses.
- 16:55Okay. So, it's good that we get kind of
- 16:58a historical record of how it happens
- 17:01back in Exodus, but then we get the veil
- 17:04is lifted and we get to see a
- 17:08mythological
- 17:10retelling of the same story. Here's how
- 17:12Ezekiel chapter 29 starting in verse one
- 17:15is going to talk about the Red Sea. You
- 17:18could tell way more mythological take. I
- 17:20start in verse two actually. Son of man,
- 17:22set your face against Pharaoh, king of
- 17:24Egypt, and prophesy against him in all
- 17:27Egypt. Speak to him and say, this is
- 17:29what the sovereign Lord says. I am
- 17:30against you, Pharaoh, king of Egypt. You
- 17:33great monster. Okay, that's that's new.
- 17:38lying among your streams. You say the
- 17:41Nile belongs to me. I made it for
- 17:44myself. But I will put hooks in your
- 17:46jaws and make the fish of your stream
- 17:50stick to your scales. Okay. So So
- 17:53Pharaoh is being talked about like a
- 17:55dragon here. He's got scales. Why is
- 17:58Pharaoh being talked about like he's
- 17:59Leviathan? I will put you out from among
- 18:02your streams with all the fish sticking
- 18:05to your scales. Okay. And then we're
- 18:08we're also we got this yesterday. Psalm
- 18:1174. Okay. Psalm 74 reading verse 13 is
- 18:16going to say this. It was you who split
- 18:18open the sea by your power. You broke
- 18:21the heads of the monster in the waters.
- 18:23So we're going to get that mythological
- 18:25language again. The word monster is a
- 18:26very mythological word. Okay. Monster in
- 18:29the waters. It was you who crushed the
- 18:32head of Leviathan
- 18:34and gave it as food to the creatures of
- 18:37the desert. So Ezekiel chapter 29 and
- 18:40Psalm 74 are all going to echo the same
- 18:44exact thing that Psalm that Psalm 77
- 18:49is echoing which is God has proven over
- 18:54and over and over again that he has
- 18:57ultimate authority, power, control over
- 19:02chaos. And I know that maybe for modern
- 19:06readers of the Bible, you you would just
- 19:09want the Bible to say that plainly, but
- 19:11the Bible speaks through images. And one
- 19:13of the images that the Bible speaks
- 19:15through is this chaos language that is
- 19:17found all over the scriptures. There's
- 19:21so much chaos language in the Bible that
- 19:22I wrote a book entitled Crushing Chaos
- 19:25because I think that this mythological
- 19:27way of reading the Bible could really
- 19:30really help us to understand what's
- 19:32happening in the Bible and how to
- 19:34understand what is happening in the
- 19:36Bible and how to understand God better.
- 19:38All right, last psalm. I'll give you the
- 19:40last nerdy nugget from Psalm 78. This
- 19:43psalm is deeply political. Very, very
- 19:45pro David. Okay? Very, very, very pro
- 19:48David. So is Psalm 76 by the way. But
- 19:51when we look at Psalm 78, what we are
- 19:54going to see is that there is this whole
- 19:57story. This is a psalm of wisdom. We get
- 20:00an entire story of how the people of
- 20:04Israel have failed over and over and
- 20:06over again. But it's not just the people
- 20:08of Israel. It's Ephraim. Ephraim is
- 20:11contrasted with Judah. Ephraim, the heir
- 20:14of Rachel. And Judah is the heir of
- 20:16Leah. Ephraim did not keep the covenant
- 20:19just like those who rebelled against
- 20:21Yahweh in the wilderness. Just like the
- 20:23family of Eli when Shiloh was destroyed
- 20:26and the ark was taken. Okay, the psalm
- 20:29ends very clearly. He rejected the tent
- 20:32of Joseph. He did not choose the tribe
- 20:35of Ephraim. But Yahweh chose the tribe
- 20:38of Judah, Mount Zion, where he loves.
- 20:42and he chose David his servant and took
- 20:46him from the sheepfold. That's chapter
- 20:4978. Psalm 78 verse 67-70.
- 20:53I skipped some things but generally
- 20:56chapter 78 67-7.
- 20:59This psalm was originally a psalm that
- 21:01rebukes Ephraim and the northern tribes
- 21:04that followed for rejecting David and
- 21:08David's house in splitting the kingdom
- 21:10in two. The psalm is clear. David and
- 21:13Zion are the choice of God. To reject
- 21:16David as king, to reject his dynasty and
- 21:20Jerusalem as the sight of the temple is
- 21:23to reject Yahweh, the true king. The
- 21:26lesson that Israel must learn from the
- 21:29history that's recounted all throughout
- 21:32Psalm 78 is that rejecting Yahweh always
- 21:35ends in disaster. And the psalm was
- 21:38compiled so that that lesson could come
- 21:41in a sharp focus. The Jews, the people
- 21:44of Judah, the people of David led by
- 21:47Zerubbabible, a son of David have
- 21:49returned to the promised land. But
- 21:51Ephraim and the northern tribes have
- 21:54not. They were lost forever. Which is a
- 21:57vindication that like, hey, God had
- 22:00always chosen David and Jerusalem. He
- 22:02chose a person and a place where he was
- 22:06going to dwell. And it doesn't really
- 22:08matter if we don't like that choice.
- 22:10Okay, which leads us right into our
- 22:12timeless truth. Family, the wait is
- 22:14over. My brand new book, Crushing Chaos,
- 22:17is out now and available everywhere
- 22:21books are sold. Literally today, I
- 22:24walked into a Barnes & Noble and I
- 22:26signed a bunch of copies at a physical
- 22:29location. So, you can grab this book at
- 22:32a physical Barnes & Noble or you can go
- 22:34to a Books a Million or Amazon or
- 22:36anywhere books are sold and grab a copy.
- 22:39If you enjoy reading the Bible from an
- 22:43ancient perspective, if you understand
- 22:45that the beauty of scripture is actually
- 22:47knowing it in context, then you'll love
- 22:50this book. And if there's any chaos in
- 22:53your personal life, I think that reading
- 22:55the Bible from an ancient perspective
- 22:57can actually help to crush the chaos in
- 23:00your life. I think this book is going to
- 23:02be a New York Times bestseller. I really
- 23:04do. I think we wrote a good one. I think
- 23:06you should get a copy today. All right,
- 23:09back to the episode. I wrote it down
- 23:11this way. It says, "Freedom of choice
- 23:13doesn't free you from the consequences
- 23:16of making poor choices." Okay. A lot of
- 23:19times we try to pit the sovereignty of
- 23:22God against free will. And I think these
- 23:24psalms are pretty clear. God's sovereign
- 23:26choice is David. That's his sovereign
- 23:28choice. But just because God's chosen
- 23:31David doesn't mean that everybody else
- 23:33is forced to choose David. So they have
- 23:35the freedom to accept or reject what God
- 23:38has already chosen. So God's made some
- 23:40choices and now you can make
- 23:42corresponding choices based on what God
- 23:44has chosen. And you are free to choose
- 23:48what God has rejected. But that also
- 23:50comes with consequences. Okay? Freedom
- 23:52of choice doesn't free you from the
- 23:54consequences of said choices. Okay? You
- 23:57and I are free to reject God's plan. But
- 24:01exercising that freedom comes with a
- 24:04cost. There's a cost. And that's not
- 24:07just true for the return exiles. That's
- 24:11not just true for the original
- 24:12recipients of these psalms. That's not
- 24:15just true in David's life. That's true
- 24:19forever. That just because you have
- 24:22freedom of choice doesn't mean that you
- 24:24are freed from the consequences of said
- 24:27choices. And if you really trust that
- 24:31God has your best interest at heart,
- 24:33then you may want to choose the things
- 24:37that he's chosen because that's a life
- 24:39hack. I'm not even going to lie to you.
- 24:42That's my timeless truth for the day
- 24:44that you do have freedom of choice.
- 24:46God's sovereignty doesn't somehow take
- 24:48away your freedom of choice and you got
- 24:50the freedom to choose bad decisions.
- 24:53However, those bad decisions will have
- 24:55consequences. And in this context, the
- 24:58people of Israel who rejected David,
- 25:02that choice is going to come with some
- 25:04bad consequences. All right, I'll see
- 25:07you tomorrow on day 278. We've got Psalm
- 25:1179- 81 tomorrow. Uh so Psalm 79, 80, and
- 25:1681. I hope that the reading blesses you.
