- 0:24family. Welcome to day 274 here on the
- 0:27Bible department podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:29Dr. Manny Orango, and I hope that you've
- 0:33already done the reading for today.
- 0:35Today, we are looking at Psalm 66, Psalm
- 0:3867, and Psalm 68. We got a medium-sized
- 0:41Psalm, a really short Psalm, and then a
- 0:44pretty hefty psalm. The Psalms that
- 0:46we've got today are not necessarily
- 0:48evenly sized, but good reading, simple
- 0:52reading, and hopefully uh this podcast
- 0:54episode can illuminate what you've
- 0:56already read. Now, if you haven't done
- 0:58the reading for the day, then I'm going
- 1:00to strongly encourage you to stop this
- 1:02video, pause the audio, go do the
- 1:05reading. This podcast is not designed to
- 1:08substitute for your daily Bible reading.
- 1:10Actually, it's designed to supplement
- 1:13your daily Bible reading. So, let's dive
- 1:15in. Like every day, I'm going to give
- 1:17you as much context as I can in the form
- 1:20of a context clue. And I'll try to give
- 1:22you a context clue for each psalm. And
- 1:24then I'm going to dive into some nerdy
- 1:25nuggets. And then we are going to always
- 1:28leave the episode off with a timeless
- 1:30truth. And today is no different. I've
- 1:32got I'm really excited about the
- 1:33timeless truth for today. I'm going to
- 1:35try to not steal my own thunder, but the
- 1:37timeless truth for today is really,
- 1:39really, really good. All right, let's
- 1:41dive into Psalm 66,67, and 68. Let's
- 1:45look at context. Number one, Psalm 66 is
- 1:48a psalm of individual thanksgiving. I I
- 1:51guess also let me say right here up at
- 1:53the top of our section on context clues
- 1:56that we've kind of gotten into a rhythm,
- 1:59especially the last couple of days,
- 2:00maybe even the last week, of having a
- 2:03heading that gives us a real solid kind
- 2:07of understanding of the context of
- 2:09what's going on in David's life. So,
- 2:11we've been flipping back to 1 Samuel a
- 2:13lot uh in the last couple of days.
- 2:15Today, we don't get any of that. Okay.
- 2:20So, today's heading for Psalm 66 is kind
- 2:23of like back to the simple stuff that
- 2:26we've dealt with for a long time. So,
- 2:28for the director of music, a song, a
- 2:30psalm. That's it. That's all we got.
- 2:32Now, what I can tell you is that this is
- 2:34a psalm of individual thanksgiving. And
- 2:38where we don't have a ton of context
- 2:39clues, we're definitely going to have a
- 2:41lot of nerdy nuggets. All right. So this
- 2:43is a psalm of individual thanksgiving. A
- 2:45psalm of praise, psalm of individual
- 2:49praise. Next, Psalm 67. Really short
- 2:52psalm. This is actually a priestly
- 2:56psalm. And we're going to dive into what
- 2:58that means a little later in the episode
- 3:00when we get to our nerdy nuggets. But
- 3:02for right now, you can know that this is
- 3:04a priestly psalm. This would be a psalm
- 3:09that really celebrates Israel's role as
- 3:12a nation of priests for the other
- 3:16nations of the earth. This psalm is an
- 3:19Abrahamic blessing psalm. And lastly,
- 3:24this would be a harvest psalm. So we can
- 3:27see right here in Psalm 67:6,
- 3:30the land yields its harvest. God, our
- 3:34God blesses us. So, this is most likely
- 3:37a harvest psalm. But more importantly,
- 3:40it's a priestly psalm. And when we get
- 3:42into our nerdy nuggets, I'll explain
- 3:45exactly why it's a priestly psalm. But
- 3:47we're going to get one big clue that
- 3:49it's a priestly psalm. And that is the
- 3:51fact that we're going to get the ironic
- 3:53blessing right here at the top of the
- 3:55psalm in verse one. It says, "May God be
- 3:58gracious to us and bless us and make his
- 4:00face shine upon us." Now, if you
- 4:03remember Numbers 6 25, we get Aaron's
- 4:08blessing. And so, Aaron's blessing is
- 4:10going to get quoted here at the top of
- 4:12Psalm 67. And who is Aaron? Well, he's
- 4:16the great high priest. So, it's a
- 4:18priestly psalm. We're going to dive into
- 4:20more of what that means. Okay. Psalm 68.
- 4:23Now, this is not explicit. Okay? We
- 4:26don't have a heading that gives us this
- 4:28information. Actually, all we get is
- 4:30this. for the director of music of
- 4:33David. Okay, this is the first Psalm of
- 4:36David that we're going to have today.
- 4:38Okay, Psalm 66 and Psalm 67 are not
- 4:41Psalms of David, but Psalm 68 is a psalm
- 4:44of David. Okay, for the director of
- 4:46music of David, a psalm, a song. So a
- 4:51lot of people uh a lot of people smarter
- 4:53than me okay believe that Psalm 68
- 4:56actually also has context and that the
- 5:01context would have been 2 Samuel 6:12
- 5:06aka the procession of the ark of the
- 5:09covenant from Oed Edom's house to the
- 5:12tabernacle in Jerusalem. very possible
- 5:16that that moment is actually the context
- 5:19for this psalm, Psalm 68. This isn't the
- 5:23only Psalm that's connected to that
- 5:26historical moment. And so there's a lot
- 5:29of evidence that Psalm 68, although we
- 5:32don't get a detailed heading at the top
- 5:35of the psalm, there's a ton of context
- 5:37here that what's being described in the
- 5:41psalm is the transportation of the ark
- 5:45of the covenant. And remember this is a
- 5:48moment the whole reason that the ark of
- 5:50the covenant is at Oed Edom's house is
- 5:53because they had tried to move it with a
- 5:56cart which was in the incorrect way to
- 5:59move it and Oed Edom's house is blessed
- 6:02because the freaking ark of the
- 6:04covenant's there. I mean, the whole
- 6:06manifest glory and power and presence of
- 6:10Yahweh is chilling at Obedom's house.
- 6:13And finally, David learns the right way
- 6:17to to transport the ark of the covenant,
- 6:19which is on poles because you have to
- 6:21bear the weight of it. And um that's a
- 6:24whole sermon on worship right there.
- 6:26That worship is something you have to
- 6:28bear the weight of. Okay. So anyway,
- 6:31they do it the right way and David is
- 6:34going to dance out of his outer garments
- 6:37and his wife at the at this point in
- 6:40time is going to be really unhappy.
- 6:43Okay, that David has become even more
- 6:46undignified or has undignified himself
- 6:49in front of the servant girls in David's
- 6:51responses, I will become even more
- 6:53undignified than this. Like you ain't
- 6:55seen nothing yet, girl. So, all right,
- 6:58there's lots of evidence that that's the
- 7:00context. All right, that's a lot of
- 7:01context. Psalm 66, Psalm of individual
- 7:04thanksgiving. Psalm 67, this is a
- 7:07priestly psalm or a harvest psalm. We'll
- 7:10get into what that means later. And then
- 7:12Psalm 68, there's tons of evidence, and
- 7:14we'll dive into that evidence that this
- 7:16psalm is based on the procession of the
- 7:19ark of the covenant from Oed Edom's
- 7:22house to the tabernacle where it belongs
- 7:25in Jerusalem. All right, let's dive into
- 7:28some nerdy nuggets. Uh, let's look at
- 7:30Psalm 66. I'm going to try to at least
- 7:32give you one nerdy nugget per psalm.
- 7:35Let's start with Psalm 66. The first
- 7:37thing that I want us to see is that this
- 7:40is going to be a theme throughout the
- 7:42Psalms, but this is definitely a theme
- 7:44here, and this could almost be even a
- 7:46timeless truth for the day, is that the
- 7:49presence of God demands and deserves a
- 7:53physical expression of praise. Okay? I
- 7:56remember when I was first a youth
- 7:57pastor, young people used to tell me
- 8:00like, "I worship God in my own way." And
- 8:02you quickly begin to realize that just
- 8:04means they don't feel comfortable
- 8:06lifting their hands or they don't feel
- 8:07comfortable singing out songs. And I
- 8:11learned pretty quickly actually that if
- 8:14I allowed them to worship God in ways
- 8:18that made them feel comfortable, then I
- 8:21actually just effectively made worship
- 8:23about them. And worship is literally
- 8:25about God. And so part of worship is
- 8:31like seeking discomfort. Like worship is
- 8:35inherently not comfortable. It is
- 8:38inherently about God. And I cannot get
- 8:42past or shake or ignore rather just the
- 8:46physicality of worship. So the first
- 8:49words of Psalm 66 is shout. Shout. I
- 8:54don't think we get to just decide. Yeah,
- 8:57based on my personality type, worship is
- 8:59quiet. No, like it says shout. So
- 9:02worship is not a personality type. It's
- 9:04a command. It's like no, let's shout for
- 9:08joy to God. Okay, all the earth sing the
- 9:13glory of his name. Make his praise
- 9:16glorious. So lots of words there. Okay.
- 9:19Shout, sing praise. Say to God. Okay. So
- 9:25also speak to the Lord. Talk to the
- 9:28Lord. And what are we saying to God? How
- 9:30awesome are your deeds. So great is your
- 9:34power that your enemies cringe before
- 9:36you. So we got some words of affirmation
- 9:38here for the Lord, man. Okay. Aka
- 9:41praise. All the earth bows down to you.
- 9:44They sing praise to you. They sing the
- 9:46praises of your name. I think that when
- 9:49the psalmist talks about all the earth,
- 9:51I think we are talking about creation
- 9:53and humans. Okay? I think we're talking
- 9:56about the mountains and the grass and
- 9:57animals plus human beings. All right?
- 10:01And how does creation worship the Lord?
- 10:05By acting according to the nature that
- 10:10God set within it. Okay. So, how does a
- 10:13deer worship? By acting like a deer.
- 10:16Okay. And so how do humans worship? By
- 10:20reflecting the image of the ones of the
- 10:23one whose image we bear. Okay. So the
- 10:27way that God has designed us actually
- 10:30shows us what worship looks like for
- 10:34each species. Right? So a tree and a
- 10:37human don't worship the same way. But a
- 10:39tree worships by doing what God designed
- 10:45it or created it to do. And I worship by
- 10:49doing what God created me or designed me
- 10:51to do. All right, family. The wait is
- 10:54over. My brand new book, Crushing Chaos,
- 10:57is out now and available everywhere
- 11:01books are sold. Literally today, I
- 11:04walked into a Barnes & Noble and I
- 11:06signed a bunch of copies at a physical
- 11:08location. So, you can grab this book at
- 11:12a physical Barnes & Noble or you can go
- 11:14to a Books a Million or Amazon or
- 11:16anywhere books are sold and grab a copy.
- 11:19If you enjoy reading the Bible from an
- 11:22ancient perspective, if you understand
- 11:25that the beauty of scripture is actually
- 11:27knowing it in context, then you'll love
- 11:30this book. And if there's any chaos in
- 11:33your personal life, I think that reading
- 11:35the Bible from an ancient perspective
- 11:37can actually help to crush the chaos in
- 11:40your life. I think this book is going to
- 11:42be a New York Times bestseller. I really
- 11:44do. I think we wrote a good one. I think
- 11:46you should get a copy today. All right,
- 11:49back to the episode. Now, the moment I
- 11:52rebel against how God designed me, that
- 11:56would literally be the opposite of
- 11:58worship. So, if I'm using sex in a way
- 12:02that's not the way that God invented sex
- 12:04or designed sex to be used, I'm actually
- 12:07using sex not for worship to God, but
- 12:10worship for self. I'm perverting that
- 12:13which God has made by using it in a way
- 12:17that's not how the creator designed it
- 12:20to be used or intended for it to be
- 12:22used. It's like let's take for instance
- 12:24if I use this iPad as a Frisbee, right?
- 12:29I could it could work, but whoever
- 12:33designed this iPad would probably say,
- 12:35"Yeah, that's that's not what I designed
- 12:37it to do, right?" So just because it can
- 12:41be a Frisbee doesn't mean that it was
- 12:43designed to be a Frisbee. And the person
- 12:46who created it and made it actually has
- 12:48the authority to say what they made it
- 12:50for. And so God is creator. And so one
- 12:55of the things that we get right here,
- 12:58not just in Psalm 66, but through the
- 13:00Psalms period, is a biblical worldview
- 13:03acknowledges I'm not the creator. God's
- 13:06a creator. I'm a created thing. God's a
- 13:09creator. I don't get to define myself. I
- 13:12don't get to pick my pronouns. I don't
- 13:14get to create my own identity. I don't
- 13:17get to define marriage the way that I
- 13:19want to. I don't get to define sexuality
- 13:22the way that I want to because I didn't
- 13:24create any of that stuff. I didn't
- 13:25create marriage. I didn't create sex. I
- 13:27didn't create sexuality. I didn't create
- 13:29gender. I didn't create any of that
- 13:31stuff. So, I don't actually get to
- 13:34tamper with it or pervert it or use it
- 13:39in ways that are not how the creator
- 13:41intended it to be used. And when I do
- 13:45use these things the way that the
- 13:48creator intended for it to be used,
- 13:50that's worship. And anytime that I use
- 13:53what God has made in ways that aren't
- 13:55the way that God intended for it to be
- 13:58used, that's perversion. Okay, so
- 14:01worship versus perversion. Okay, this is
- 14:03this is good. Okay, he turned. Okay,
- 14:06come and see. Okay, I love this. Come
- 14:08and see what God has done. His awesome
- 14:11deeds for mankind. He turned the sea
- 14:14into dry land. They passed through the
- 14:17waters on foot. Come let us rejoice in
- 14:20him. So this is the story of the Red
- 14:22Sea. Okay. So come and see. Okay. And
- 14:25now we get come let us rejoice. And then
- 14:27there's a lot of praise. Okay. And then
- 14:29in verse 13, everything shifts and it
- 14:32goes from we we we us to I will come to
- 14:39your temple with burnt offerings and
- 14:41fulfill my vows to you. I love this one.
- 14:44Verse 14. Vows my lips promised and my
- 14:47mouth spoke when I was in trouble. Come
- 14:49on. Please, let's not act like we have
- 14:52not all vowed something to the Lord when
- 14:55we were scared or in trouble and then
- 14:57once the coast is clear and God rescued
- 14:59us, you kind of reigged on the vow,
- 15:02right? That's happened to me on a roller
- 15:04coaster actually. I was I said, "Lord,
- 15:06if I was so scared on this roller
- 15:07coaster, I was like, God, if you get me
- 15:08off this thing, I promise not only will
- 15:10I break up with this heathen girlfriend
- 15:12that you don't want me to be dating, and
- 15:13not only will I confess, you know, that
- 15:16that I was watching pornography and oh,
- 15:18God, I'll do anything. I'll do anything.
- 15:20Just please, you know, I'm scared. You
- 15:22know, come on. Don't act like I'm the
- 15:23only one. Okay. Who's who's ever been
- 15:25scared? And then you're you start vowing
- 15:27things to the Lord. And and so David is
- 15:31well, not David, sorry. The psalmist in
- 15:33Psalm 66 is like, "Hey, I am actually
- 15:36going to fulfill the vows I made to the
- 15:38Lord when I was in trouble. I will
- 15:40sacrifice fat animals to you and an
- 15:42offering of rams. I will offer bulls,
- 15:44bulls, and goats. Come in here." Now,
- 15:46we're at Come here. So we've done come
- 15:48and see, come let us rejoice. I will
- 15:51come to your temple and now come and
- 15:52hear. And what do they come to hear? The
- 15:55individual tell of all the things that
- 15:57God has done. So the fascinating thing
- 15:59is that this psalm of individual
- 16:02thanksgiving actually starts with
- 16:04corporate praise. And man, ain't that a
- 16:07good model for church? I hope that
- 16:10corporate worship and corporate praise
- 16:13really does inspire you towards
- 16:15individual thanksgiving. And there are
- 16:18always moments during worship where I
- 16:21begin to sing my own song to the Lord.
- 16:23You know, we're singing as a
- 16:24congregation and we're all singing the
- 16:26same lyrics, but then corporate praise
- 16:29turns into individual thanksgiving. I
- 16:32think that's good. We have a model for
- 16:34it here in Psalm 66. Vows my li Okay,
- 16:37sorry. Come and hear all you who fear
- 16:40God. Let me tell you what he has done
- 16:44for me. Which means testifying of the
- 16:46goodness of God is also praise. So we
- 16:49see this in verse three. Say to God how
- 16:52awesome are your deeds. So telling God
- 16:53about how awesome he is is praise. But
- 16:56then telling others about how awesome
- 16:57God is is also praise. Okay. I cried out
- 17:00to him with my mouth. His praise was on
- 17:03my tongue. If I had cherished sin in my
- 17:06heart, the Lord would not have listened.
- 17:09And I highlighted that because there's a
- 17:11big difference between committing sinful
- 17:14acts and cherishing sin in my heart.
- 17:18Man, there's a difference between, man,
- 17:20I slipped up. Man, I acted in a way I I
- 17:24didn't want to act. And I'm I'm hiding
- 17:27sin. I'm cherishing sin in my heart.
- 17:31like, yeah, I I will not give this up. I
- 17:35I will keep sinning in this way as long
- 17:38as possible. I'm cherishing it in my
- 17:41heart. Okay. Uh that's a lot of nerdy
- 17:43nuggets from Psalm 66. All right. Psalm
- 17:4667. Now, Psalm 67, uh verse 4. May the
- 17:51nations be glad and sing for joy, for
- 17:54you rule the peoples with equity and
- 17:56guide the nations of the earth. Okay, so
- 17:58what was the Abrahamic covenant? It was
- 18:01that God would bless Abraham so that
- 18:05Abraham through his descendants could be
- 18:08a blessing to the nations. Okay? That
- 18:09was always the goal. God's goal was
- 18:12always to get it to them so that he
- 18:15could get it through them. That was
- 18:17God's plan to bless Israel so that
- 18:20Israel could be this beacon of light and
- 18:23hope so that the nations could be
- 18:25blessed. Okay? And so that's actually
- 18:27what happens in the person of Jesus.
- 18:29God's plan was never monoethnic or eth
- 18:33ethnosentric.
- 18:35Okay? God's plan was never, yeah, the
- 18:37people of Israel are just so special.
- 18:39I'm going to bless them and only them.
- 18:41No, it was always I'm going to get it to
- 18:44the people of Israel so I can get it
- 18:45through them. And so in the same way
- 18:48that Aaron the priest is supposed to
- 18:51reflect the blessing of Yahweh to the
- 18:54people, the people are supposed to be a
- 18:57nation of priests for the world. Okay.
- 19:00So the reason that this psalm starts
- 19:02with Aaron's blessing from Numbers
- 19:07uh 6:2
- 19:09is because this psalm is actually
- 19:12supposed to demonstrate
- 19:15reveal the blessing that Yahweh has for
- 19:19the nations through the descendants of
- 19:22Abraham. Okay. So they are, this is a
- 19:25psalm whereby the people are supposed to
- 19:28remember the call on their collective
- 19:31lives to be priests. And what happens
- 19:34when when they don't worship idols, God
- 19:36blesses their land. When they don't
- 19:38worship idols, God blesses their
- 19:40harvest. And when God blesses their
- 19:42harvest, they are now a good witness to
- 19:45all the other nations. All the other
- 19:46nations are like, "Your God blesses your
- 19:49harvest." There's a manifested way.
- 19:52There's a there's a tangible way that
- 19:56God blesses them so that the other
- 19:59nations can see that Israel's blessed.
- 20:02Okay? So, the fact that this is a
- 20:04priestly psalm and a harvest psalm
- 20:06really go together because it wasn't
- 20:09like Israel is just supposed to go out
- 20:10and evangelize. It's just they're
- 20:12supposed to be blessed and they're
- 20:14supposed to be so blessed that it would
- 20:16cause the nations to ask, "How are you
- 20:18so blessed?" And their answer's supposed
- 20:20to be, "Oh, because we worship Yahweh.
- 20:22We're blessed because we worship
- 20:23Yahweh." And that was like Yahweh's
- 20:25whole plan. But what happens? Instead of
- 20:28the people doing that, they want to be
- 20:30like the nations that they're supposed
- 20:31to lead. And by being like the nations
- 20:34and worshiping the idols of the nations,
- 20:36they experience drought. And so the
- 20:39reason that the nations, those secular
- 20:42nations blood is on Israel's hands is
- 20:44because Israel was called to to have an
- 20:48allegiance to Yahweh so they could be
- 20:50blessed so they could be a good witness.
- 20:52But because they didn't have allegiance
- 20:53to Yahweh, Yahweh had to curse them and
- 20:55they had experienced drought because
- 20:57they practiced idolatry and therefore
- 20:59they're not reflecting the goodness of
- 21:02God. So they can't be a good witness.
- 21:04And so now the people that they're
- 21:05supposed to be witnessing to, those
- 21:08people's blood is now in their hands. So
- 21:10this psalm has all of those themes
- 21:12encapsulated in it. And to be totally
- 21:15honest, I feel like without that kind of
- 21:17an explanation, you you probably
- 21:19wouldn't have understood that that's
- 21:21what this psalm is reflecting on is
- 21:24talking about. Last but not least, Psalm
- 21:2768. Now this psalm, Psalm 68 is going to
- 21:32actually quote Numbers 10:35. Okay,
- 21:35Numbers 10:35
- 21:38is going to say this. Okay, God shall
- 21:41arise, his enemies shall be scattered.
- 21:43Okay. Now, when Numbers says these
- 21:46words, God shall arise, his enemies
- 21:48shall be scattered, it is 100% talking
- 21:51about the ark of the covenant being
- 21:54brought out to battle so that the
- 21:56presence of God can actually go before
- 21:58the people. Okay? So, this entire psalm
- 22:01is a reflection of Yahweh the king um
- 22:05riding his mobile throne aka the ark of
- 22:08the covenant. And the psalm begins with
- 22:11the call that is mentioned in numbers
- 22:1410:35.
- 22:16God shall arise. His enemy shall be
- 22:18scattered. Numbers, the book of numbers
- 22:21presents Yahweh as the general king. Not
- 22:24general like lowercase G, general like a
- 22:28general of the army. Okay. Uh the
- 22:30general the king that is also the
- 22:33general of the army of the of of Israel
- 22:36leading his army into battle. And this
- 22:38psalm reflects some of that ancient
- 22:40journey. All right. The triumph of the
- 22:43warrior king continues as his thousands
- 22:46upon thousands of chariots are
- 22:48described. All right. Now, I'm going to
- 22:50give you a three-fold kind of and that
- 22:53emphasis on the ark and how the ark is
- 22:56moving is what causes a ton of scholars
- 23:00to actually say that Psalm 68 is 100% a
- 23:05reflection or inspired by the ascent
- 23:09from Oed Edom's house to the tabernacle
- 23:12in Jerusalem. So, there's three things
- 23:15that are outlined in Psalm 68. First of
- 23:18all, arise. Arise. Okay. God shall
- 23:22arise. His enemies shall be scattered.
- 23:24Okay. This is God mounting the ark of
- 23:27the covenant. Okay. Second, ascend.
- 23:30Okay. Here's the language that we have
- 23:32in chapter 68.
- 23:35You ascended on high, leading a host of
- 23:38captives in your train and receiving
- 23:41gifts among men. Now, Paul is going to
- 23:45quote this exact psalm in Ephesians
- 23:47chapter 4:8, and that's going to be our
- 23:49Thomas Truth for the day. But before we
- 23:52get to that, I just want to close out
- 23:55the sequence that we have. God is going
- 23:57to arise and then he's going to ascend
- 24:00and then he's going to enter. Okay, this
- 24:03psalm is going to close. Okay. In
- 24:06chapter 68 24, the procession ends when
- 24:10the ark enters the sanctuary, the king's
- 24:14home. Yahweh's home. Okay. Yahweh's
- 24:18throne is back in his palace, which is
- 24:22his home. The king is home. Okay. 68:4,
- 24:27it says this, "Your procession, God, has
- 24:30come into view. The procession of my God
- 24:33and king into the sanctuary." I said,
- 24:35"Okay, so this entire psalm is about a
- 24:39procession, a the procession of a
- 24:42warrior king where the ark is moving
- 24:45around, it's victorious, and then it
- 24:48finally comes to rest in its place or in
- 24:53its home, but in the king's palace. Not
- 24:56the David the king, Yahweh the king."
- 24:58All right, timeless truth. We're going
- 25:00to actually use the fact that Paul is
- 25:04going to quote this psalm. He's going to
- 25:06quote 68:18
- 25:08in Ephesians 4:8. So, I'm going to read
- 25:11Ephesians 4:8 to you. It says this. I'll
- 25:15start at verse 7. But to each one of us,
- 25:18grace has been given as Christ aortioned
- 25:20it. This is why it says, "When he
- 25:23ascended on high, he took many captives
- 25:25and gave gifts to his people." What does
- 25:28he ascended mean except that he also
- 25:31descended to the lower earthly regions?
- 25:34He who descended is the very one who
- 25:37ascended higher than all the heavens in
- 25:40order to fill the whole universe. So
- 25:41Christ himself gave okay what gifts does
- 25:44he give? Gives apostles, prophets,
- 25:47evangelists, pastors and teachers to
- 25:49equip his people for the works of
- 25:51service so the body of Christ may be
- 25:54built up. So if Jesus is a groom and the
- 25:58church is his bride, Jesus has a wedding
- 26:01gift for his bride and it is in the form
- 26:04of these fivefold ministry giftings. So
- 26:08what's my timeless truth for the day? If
- 26:10David danced before the type and shadow.
- 26:13Okay. If David danced before that which
- 26:16was prefiguring what we have today. If
- 26:20David danced before the type and shadow,
- 26:22how much more so should we not express
- 26:25physical praise to God. Now that the
- 26:28fulfillment of the type and shadow is
- 26:30here. Ephesians 4:8 is huge. Ephesians
- 26:354:8 means that the fulfillment of Psalm
- 26:3968 has come. And if David could dance in
- 26:43front of the type in the shadow, how
- 26:46much more should we acknowledge the Holy
- 26:50Spirit of God? I'll read it this way. In
- 26:55Psalm 68, the Spirit of Yahweh enters
- 26:58old Jerusalem and ascends to rest and
- 27:00rule in the tabernacle. In Ephesians,
- 27:03the spirit of Yahweh enters the new
- 27:05Jerusalem and ascends to rest and rule
- 27:08in the new temple. And the new covenant
- 27:10in the new Jerusalem and the new temple
- 27:13are one and the same. What is it? The
- 27:16church, the body and the bride of
- 27:19Christ. David danced and rejoiced to see
- 27:21the presence of God in a tent. Yet every
- 27:24day of our walk with Christ, we know
- 27:26something far greater than David. the
- 27:29presence of God in these temples of the
- 27:32Holy Spirit and the presence of God in
- 27:35the churches that we are a part of week
- 27:39in and week out. If David danced before
- 27:42the ark of the covenant, how much more
- 27:45should we bring physical praise, shouts
- 27:49of praise, songs of praise, dances of
- 27:52praise, exuberant praise before God who
- 27:56has fulfilled everything that Psalm 68
- 27:59was pointing to. That's not just true
- 28:02for David. That's not just true for
- 28:04Paul. That should be true for you and me
- 28:07as well. And that's my timeless truth
- 28:09for the day. All right, tomorrow we've
- 28:11got Psalm 69-72.
