- 0:24Family, welcome to day 272
- 0:27here on the Bible department podcast.
- 0:29I'm your host, Dr. Manny Orango, and
- 0:32today we're walking through three
- 0:34Psalms. Psalm 60, Psalm 61, and Psalm
- 0:3762. If you have not done the reading
- 0:40yet, make sure that you stop the video,
- 0:43pause the audio, and go get the reading
- 0:45done. Quick Psalms. I would say these
- 0:48aren't the most popular Psalms, but we
- 0:51get headings for a lot of them, so the
- 0:52context is going to be pretty easy to
- 0:55figure out. And then, like always, I'll
- 0:57give you some nerdy nuggets. And then
- 0:58I'll leave the episode with a I'll leave
- 1:01off uh I'll close the episode off with a
- 1:04timeless truth because the goal is not
- 1:07just to learn historical facts. It's
- 1:09actually to put the word of God into
- 1:11practice in our everyday life. So if you
- 1:14have read Psalm 60, Psalm 61, and Psalm
- 1:1662. Let's dive in to some context. All
- 1:20right. Like always, well, with the last
- 1:23couple of days on the Psalms, we've been
- 1:24looking at headings, and we get a pretty
- 1:27detailed heading for Psalm 60. Uh, it
- 1:31says this for the director of music to
- 1:33the tune of the lily of the covenant.
- 1:36Don't know what that tune sounds like,
- 1:38but that's what we're going to sing this
- 1:40to. a mtam of David for teaching when he
- 1:44fought Aram Naharim and Aram Neabbah or
- 1:49Noah. Okay. And when Joab returned and
- 1:53struck down 12,000 in the
- 1:57valley of salt. Very, very, very, very
- 2:01detailed heading that we get right
- 2:04before Psalm 60. Now, you may be
- 2:06thinking, okay, when did that happen?
- 2:09Well, this entire episode happened in 2
- 2:13Samuel 8 3-6
- 2:1713-4 and then 2 Samuel 10 15- 19. So,
- 2:22like always when we get something that's
- 2:25referenced in 2 Samuel or 1 Samuel for
- 2:28that matter, when first 2 Samuel is the
- 2:30context for the Psalms, we go to 1 or 2
- 2:33Samuel. And so, David's no longer on the
- 2:37run. Like that's not the portion of
- 2:38Psalms that we're like in. Okay. The
- 2:42last couple days, all of those Psalms
- 2:44were kind of really emphasizing, you
- 2:47know, the distress, the fact that he was
- 2:49on the run being hunted by Saul. But now
- 2:53we are going to look at some of David's
- 2:55military campaigns. Okay? And this is
- 2:58one of those military campaigns. All
- 2:59right? So 2 Samuel chapter 8, we're
- 3:02going to start reading in verse three.
- 3:03says this, "Moreover, David defeated
- 3:06Hadad Ezar." By the way, that word Ezer
- 3:09Edzer is help or helper. We talked about
- 3:12that a couple days ago that God is our
- 3:14help. I don't actually know what had
- 3:17means, but I know that this name here
- 3:20ends with the word helper. I know that.
- 3:23Uh so Hadad Ezar uh son of Rebbo, king
- 3:27of Zoba when he met me went to restore
- 3:31his monument at the Euphrates River. All
- 3:33right, big clue as the context of what's
- 3:36going on is Euphrates River. Now this is
- 3:40where this doesn't always happen, but a
- 3:43lot of times I'm giving historical
- 3:44context or linguistic context or
- 3:47cultural context. I'm actually going to
- 3:49give geographical
- 3:51context. Okay, geographical context.
- 3:54Now, if you don't understand the
- 3:56geography of Israel, this is not going
- 3:58to make a lot of sense. However, let me
- 4:01break it down for you. The Euphrates
- 4:02River is all the way up north. Okay? So,
- 4:07David is going to have to go all the way
- 4:10up north to fight the Arameans. What
- 4:14then happens is that while David has his
- 4:18army up north, the are going to
- 4:21attack in the valley of salt. So if you
- 4:24go to 2 Samuel 8:13,
- 4:28says this, "And David became famous
- 4:31after he returned from striking down
- 4:3318,000 in the Valley of Salt."
- 4:36Wait a second. I thought he was just up
- 4:38at the Euphrates defeating the Arameans.
- 4:41Well, what happens is that while he's up
- 4:44north defeating the Aramians, the
- 4:46figure, hey, no way David and
- 4:50his army are going to get all the way
- 4:52down here in time. We may as well attack
- 4:56the southern border at the Valley of
- 4:58Salt. Okay, so that's the context.
- 5:01Valley of Salt is all the way in the
- 5:03south, and you'd have to know that to
- 5:06actually know like what's going on. like
- 5:09why is this even stressful? Okay, why
- 5:11are these details given? Well, these
- 5:13details are actually really really
- 5:14important because David, we're going to
- 5:17get a sneak peek into David's theology.
- 5:20Okay? Because the and this is one verse
- 5:24in in 2 Samuel, but what we're going to
- 5:27begin to get a glimpse of in Psalm 60 is
- 5:31that at first the in the south
- 5:35are actually successful. And David's
- 5:38understanding of cosmology and theology
- 5:42is that God controls everything. So if
- 5:45God is allowing the Enoites to attack
- 5:47them and be successful, then God must
- 5:51have ordained this, why and why does God
- 5:54ordain your enemies to defeat you? If
- 5:57you've been rebellious and you need
- 6:00correction okay so that is the context
- 6:04for Psalm 60. And what does how does
- 6:07Psalm 60 start? Here we go. Verse one.
- 6:10You have rejected us. See, you see how
- 6:13those words you have rejected us don't
- 6:16make sense if you don't know that
- 6:18there's a battle up north. They get
- 6:20attacked in the south and they are
- 6:23they're losing and David's got to bring
- 6:26his whole army down south. This is a
- 6:28stressful situation. Okay. Psalm 60. You
- 6:32have rejected us, God, and burst upon
- 6:35us. You have been angry. Now restore us.
- 6:38You have shaken the land and tore it
- 6:40open. Mend its fractures, for it is
- 6:43quaking. You have shown your people
- 6:45desperate times. You have given us wine
- 6:48that makes us stagger. But for those who
- 6:52fear you, you have raised a banner to be
- 6:55unfurled against the bow. Save us and
- 6:58help us with your right hand that those
- 7:01you love may be delivered. God has
- 7:05spoken from his sanctuary and triumph. I
- 7:07will partial parcel out Sheckchum and
- 7:10measure off the valley of Sukkot. If we
- 7:14skip all the way down to the end of the
- 7:16psalm. Okay. Uh verse 11. Give us aid
- 7:19against the enemy for human help is
- 7:22worthless. With God we will gain the
- 7:25victory and he will trample down our
- 7:28enemies. Now that right there is one of
- 7:31the reasons why David is going to go
- 7:33down in history as being a man after
- 7:35God's own heart. It's not just his heart
- 7:37of repentance when he sins against God.
- 7:39It's this right here. Give us aid
- 7:41against the enemy for human help is
- 7:44worthless. If you spend time going
- 7:47through kings, the number one thing that
- 7:50kings, the kings of Israel are going to
- 7:53be chastised for is trusting foreign
- 7:56nations. Don't trust Egypt. Don't trust
- 7:58Assyria. Don't trust any alliances. And
- 8:02so what does David say? for human help
- 8:05is worthless. I don't need an alliance.
- 8:07I don't need other kings of foreign
- 8:10nations to come help me. I don't need
- 8:12deliverance from any other suzarin. I
- 8:17don't need to make myself a vassel to
- 8:19any of these stronger nations. No, no,
- 8:21no, no. Human help is worthless.
- 8:24With God, we will gain the victory and
- 8:28he will trample down our enemies. So,
- 8:32here we go. context clue. I mean,
- 8:35literally helps you to interpret
- 8:36everything that's happening. And the
- 8:39psalm even sheds light on what's going
- 8:42on in 2 Samuel chapter 8. Okay. All
- 8:46right. Let's look at Psalm uh we may not
- 8:50have time to ah we got to look at the
- 8:52next psalm. Okay. Psalm 61. Okay. Let's
- 8:54let's look at the context for Psalm 61.
- 8:56Now, for Psalm 61, there are three
- 8:59context options. Okay. because we don't
- 9:02have a detailed heading. All we've got
- 9:05is this for the director of music with
- 9:08stringed instruments of David. That's
- 9:10all we got. All right. So, there are
- 9:13three options for possible context for
- 9:16Psalm 61. Okay. Let me give you all
- 9:18three options. The first is on the run
- 9:22from Saul. Okay. The second is another
- 9:26one of David's military campaigns just
- 9:28like Psalm 60. Okay. Okay, so Psalm 61
- 9:31could be from the same context as Psalm
- 9:3460. And then last is when David is
- 9:37fleeing from his son Abselum who has
- 9:41usurped the throne. Okay, so he's either
- 9:43on the run from Saul, on the run from
- 9:45Abselum, okay, when he's young, when
- 9:47he's old. Okay, he's on the run from
- 9:49Saul when he's young, he's on the run
- 9:51from his son Abselum when he's older, or
- 9:53a military campaign while he's king. All
- 9:56right. There are some clues that reveal
- 9:59that the context is either two or three
- 10:02and not one. All right. And let's look
- 10:06at Psalm 61 verse 6. Okay. Psalm 61
- 10:10verse 6. It says this. Increase the days
- 10:13of the king's life. Increase the days of
- 10:16the king's life, his years for many
- 10:17generations. May he be enthroned in
- 10:20God's presence forever. appoint your
- 10:23love and faithfulness to protect him.
- 10:26Now, what king is David talking about?
- 10:29If this psalm is written while David is
- 10:33young and he's on the run from Saul,
- 10:37then the king that David is praying for
- 10:39here is Saul. Okay? He's praying that
- 10:43God would increase the day of Saul's
- 10:46years for many generations. May Saul be
- 10:48enthroned in God's presence forever.
- 10:51appoint your love and faithfulness to
- 10:53protect Saul. Possible. We know from
- 10:57David's character that that's possible,
- 10:59but unlikely. Okay, possible, but
- 11:03unlikely. What makes more sense is that
- 11:06he's actually praying this prayer for
- 11:08himself. He's saying, "Increase the days
- 11:11of my life cuz I'm the king." Okay? be
- 11:16may may I be enthroned in God's presence
- 11:21forever. Appoint your love and
- 11:23faithfulness to protect me. And and this
- 11:26probably lends itself towards an
- 11:28interpretation that Psalm 61 is birthed
- 11:32out of a moment in time where David is
- 11:35running from his son Abselum. Okay. So
- 11:39it these two verses verses 6 and 7 have
- 11:43caused a lot of commentators and a lot
- 11:46of scholars to really believe that this
- 11:51is coming from a later moment in David's
- 11:54life that although David is a man of
- 11:58insane character and could pray this
- 12:02prayer for Saul that this is probably
- 12:04not a prayer for Saul but this is
- 12:06probably a prayer for himself. All
- 12:08right, that is a nerdy nugget and
- 12:12context for Psalm 61. And then uh we've
- 12:16got Psalm 62. All right, one of the
- 12:19things that I wanted to highlight in
- 12:20Psalm 62, we're going to read the
- 12:22heading. Psalm 62 has this heading for
- 12:24the director of music for Jedathan, a
- 12:28psalm of David. Jedan. All right, just
- 12:31to just for your notes, okay, this is
- 12:32kind of a nerdy nugget more than a
- 12:34context clue really. Jonathan is is
- 12:37mentioned in 1st Chronicles 16 41-42.
- 12:42Jonathan is also mentioned in 1st
- 12:43Chronicles 25:es
- 12:461 to3. Okay, so that little nerdy
- 12:50detail. Okay, Jonathan is a character
- 12:53that we've heard of before and you can
- 12:56find out who he is contextually by going
- 12:59to 1st Chronicles chapter 16 41-42 and
- 13:031st Chronicles chapter 25 1-3. That's a
- 13:08contextual nerdy nugget. I've been I've
- 13:10been creating a lot of hybrid context
- 13:13clues and nerdy nuggets kind of together
- 13:15uh over the last couple of days. I'll
- 13:17take it though. I think it's okay. All
- 13:19right, time is truth, family. The wait
- 13:22is over. My brand new book, Crushing
- 13:25Chaos, is out now and available
- 13:28everywhere books are sold literally
- 13:31today. I walked into a Barnes & Noble
- 13:34and I signed a bunch of copies at a
- 13:36physical location. So, you can grab this
- 13:39book at a physical Barnes & Noble or you
- 13:42can go to a Books a Million or Amazon or
- 13:45anywhere books are sold and grab a copy.
- 13:48If you enjoy reading the Bible from an
- 13:51ancient perspective, if you understand
- 13:53that the beauty of scripture is actually
- 13:55knowing it in context, then you'll love
- 13:58this book. And if there's any chaos in
- 14:01your personal life, I think that reading
- 14:04the Bible from an ancient perspective
- 14:06can actually help to crush the chaos in
- 14:08your life. I think this book is going to
- 14:10be a New York Times bestseller. I really
- 14:12do. I think we wrote a good one. I think
- 14:14you should get a copy today. All right,
- 14:18back to the episode. Psalm 62. Uh, let's
- 14:21actually look at Psalm 62. Says this,
- 14:23"Truly, my soul finds rest in God. My
- 14:28salvation comes from him. Truly, he is
- 14:31my rock and my salvation. He is my
- 14:33fortress. I will never be shaken. And
- 14:37then we're going to go all the way down
- 14:38to verse 5. Yes, my soul finds rest in
- 14:43God. My hope comes from him. Truly, he
- 14:46is my rock and my salvation. He is my
- 14:49fortress. I will not be shaken. Uh we're
- 14:53actually going to look at those verses
- 14:56in a different translation. Okay, I'm
- 14:58going to pull up Logos Bible Study
- 14:59Software. We just read a couple of
- 15:01verses from Psalm 62 in the NIV, but now
- 15:04I actually want to read it in the NRSV.
- 15:07Okay, Psalm 62:es 1 and 2, where the NIV
- 15:12is going to use the word rest. The NRSV
- 15:14is actually going to use the word
- 15:15silence. And I actually think it's a
- 15:17beautiful translation. Says this, for
- 15:20God alone, my soul waits in silence.
- 15:24From him comes my salvation. And he
- 15:26alone is my rock and my salvation, my
- 15:29fortress. I shall not be shaken. And
- 15:32then verse 5 says this, for God alone my
- 15:36soul waits in silence. For my hope is
- 15:39from him. He alone is my rock and my
- 15:42salvation, my fortress. I shall not be
- 15:46shaken. Okay. Rest versus silence. This
- 15:50is a bit of a nerdy nugget, but it's
- 15:52also a timeless truth. And uh it's this
- 15:56that for David true faith is not found
- 16:00in multiplying words. It's actually
- 16:02found in silence.
- 16:05This this is a kind of an odd thing
- 16:08maybe even for 21st century modern
- 16:11readers. Uh because we don't think of
- 16:14silence as an act of faith. But when God
- 16:17speaks, silence is actually the response
- 16:20of the mature. But to multiply words
- 16:23could actually be the response of the
- 16:25immature. I'll give you an example to
- 16:27kind of connect the dots. A lot of
- 16:29times, you know, my son will ask me for
- 16:31stuff. Dad, can we go to the Lego store?
- 16:34Dad, can you get me some juice? You
- 16:36know, dad, can we go to In-N-Out? And
- 16:38what's funny is that I'll say yes. Be
- 16:41like, yeah, we can do that, buddy. And
- 16:43then as soon as I say yes, he'll ask
- 16:45again. and he'll ask again. And he'll
- 16:47ask again until I actually do what he's
- 16:51asked me to do. And for my son, silence
- 16:55as he waits for me to actually act out
- 16:59what I promised. He's just not at the
- 17:01maturity level yet where he can ask and
- 17:05then wait in silence until he finds the
- 17:08fulfillment of what he's asked for. And
- 17:10actually if we want to think about how
- 17:13to gauge our own maturity, our own
- 17:15maturity can be gauged by how silent we
- 17:18are able to be like our soul being
- 17:21quiet. That's why the NIV translates
- 17:24this as rest. Like can you calm down?
- 17:29Like can your soul get quiet and rest?
- 17:34Like when you've asked God for
- 17:35something, are you also trying to figure
- 17:38out how you can make it happen for
- 17:39yourself? Or when you ask God for
- 17:41something, are you just going to rest
- 17:43and wait? And I think for a lot of us,
- 17:46we think about silence and we think
- 17:48maybe that that's apathy or like we've
- 17:51given up given up silence, like a
- 17:53surrender in a bad way, like you've just
- 17:55surrendered to fate, you know? But
- 17:57actually, this is not a apathetic or a
- 18:00given up silence. This is a faithfilled
- 18:05silence. It's a faithfilled silence that
- 18:07comes from the soul and your soul begins
- 18:10to get quiet and the quietness of your
- 18:13soul begins to remind you that God said
- 18:17yes, that he is faithful and that
- 18:21silence produces hope and that hope
- 18:24becomes a fortress and that fortress is
- 18:27also a rock. So if we look at this verse
- 18:30again, for God alone my soul waits in
- 18:33silence. Okay, God is able to bring rest
- 18:37and silence to my soul. Whereas I'm busy
- 18:40trying to accomplish things that God's
- 18:42already promised me I can actually like
- 18:45quiet my soul and then for my hope is
- 18:50from him like that that's rooted in
- 18:52hope. And then this makes God my rock.
- 18:56It makes him my fortress. It actually
- 18:59creates a faith in me that's unshakable
- 19:01that I'm like, "Yeah, just because God
- 19:03didn't do what I asked him to do does
- 19:06not mean that I'm going to be anxious in
- 19:09my soul or that I'm going to be worried
- 19:12in my soul. I'm going to be quiet and
- 19:15I'm going to be still. I'm going to find
- 19:17inner peace even as I wait for God to do
- 19:21what he's promised that he would do."
- 19:24And believing God in faith does not ever
- 19:28look like being in a rush or being
- 19:31hurried or being worried. Believing God
- 19:33by faith actually means that you can
- 19:35slow down, that you can calm down, and
- 19:37you can rest in the fact that he's
- 19:41already said yes. And like my son at
- 19:44some point, maybe this year, maybe next
- 19:46year, who knows? When he asks me to go
- 19:49to the Lego store or asks me to go to
- 19:51In-N-Out or ask me for juice and I say
- 19:54yes, he'll finally get to the place of
- 19:56maturity where my answer is enough. And
- 20:01he doesn't need my immediate action
- 20:03because my answer has already created a
- 20:06quietness and a stillness and a silence
- 20:09in his soul that allows him to actually
- 20:13wait. And my prayer for you is that you
- 20:16would begin to do the same thing. That
- 20:18God's answer would actually hold just as
- 20:22much weight as his action. and that even
- 20:24when there's a gap between his answer
- 20:27and his action, that your soul wouldn't
- 20:30be worried or anxious, but that your
- 20:33word that your soul would actually find
- 20:36hope in the answer that God's given. And
- 20:39you wouldn't need immediate
- 20:41corresponding action because you
- 20:43actually have your hope in the God of
- 20:45the answer. And that's not just true for
- 20:47David, man. That's true for me. It's
- 20:49true for you. It's true for my son who's
- 20:51four. And I think that that will bring
- 20:54peace to your life. And I would actually
- 20:57say that a lot of anxiety happens in the
- 20:59gap between God's answer and God's
- 21:01action. And then instead of having
- 21:04anxiety in that moment, you can actually
- 21:06have hope in that moment, which is an
- 21:08anchor for your soul. All right, I'll
- 21:10see you tomorrow for day 273. We're
- 21:14going to be digging into Psalms 63 and
- 21:1665. If you're on a streak, I'm so proud
- 21:18of you. If you're on a streak, you're
- 21:20probably realizing that the words that
