- 0:24Family, welcome to day 270.
- 0:27We are going to look at three of David's
- 0:30Psalms today here at the Bible
- 0:33department. I'm super super excited.
- 0:35Hey, if you haven't done the reading
- 0:36today, how about you stop the video,
- 0:38pause the audio, go do the reading.
- 0:40Today we are reading Psalm 54,55
- 0:44and 56.
- 0:46Three short Psalms. These would also be
- 0:49like psalms of lament. And so they're
- 0:52probably not going to get you fired up,
- 0:54but uh they're important. They they
- 0:56emphasize and they express the full
- 0:59spectrum of human emotion. We're going
- 1:02to dive into some of those human
- 1:03feelings today. All right. So, if you
- 1:06have done the reading, let's dive in.
- 1:09Let's get into context clues. Like every
- 1:12day, I'm going to give you context for
- 1:13what we're reading and then we're going
- 1:15to dive into some nerdy nuggets, maybe
- 1:16some things that you wouldn't have
- 1:18picked up if you were reading on your
- 1:19own. And then we'll end the episode with
- 1:21a timeless truth. So, context clues,
- 1:25like you probably are aware of at this
- 1:27point, we've looked at 53 Psalms. Uh,
- 1:30there are these headings at the top of
- 1:32the Psalms. Okay? So, Psalm 54 is going
- 1:35to have one of these headings. I'll read
- 1:37it straight out of my Bible. It says,
- 1:39uh, for the director of music with
- 1:41stringed instruments, a mascul of David.
- 1:44So, we know that this is something
- 1:45written by David. And then it gives this
- 1:48little phrase. When the Zapites had gone
- 1:51to Saul and said, "Is not David hiding
- 1:55among us?" Right? I'll say that one more
- 1:57time. When the Zephites had gone to Saul
- 2:00and said, "Is not David hiding among
- 2:03us?" So that is the context for this
- 2:06psalm. Okay, David writes this psalm
- 2:09based on that life scenario. So where is
- 2:13that life scenario found? I'm so glad
- 2:15that you asked. It is found in 1st
- 2:17Samuel chap 23
- 2:2014-2.
- 2:221st Samuel chapter 23 14-2. And of
- 2:26course I've got Psalm 54 pulled up in
- 2:29this Bible. But I've got 1st Samuel 23
- 2:33pulled up in this Bible. And so if we go
- 2:36go we can go ahead and read. I'll read
- 2:37it straight from my Bible. 1st Samuel
- 2:39chapter 23. We can start reading at
- 2:41verse 14. Uh, David stayed in the
- 2:45wilderness strongholds and in the hills
- 2:48of the desert of Ze. Here we go. Key
- 2:51word, ze. Okay. And if you go uh day
- 2:54after day, Saul searched for him. But
- 2:56God did not give David into Saul's
- 3:00hands. While David was at Hores in the
- 3:02desert of Ze, he learned that Saul had
- 3:06come out to take his life. Okay, so Saul
- 3:08is adamant about trying to murder David.
- 3:13This is not a game. Okay, David is on
- 3:15the run for his life. He is he is
- 3:18desperately trying to to not die at the
- 3:22hands of Saul. And then if you drop all
- 3:23the way down to 19, the Zephites, okay,
- 3:27went up to Saul at Gibia and said, "Is
- 3:30not David hiding among us?" So obviously
- 3:33that is the exact heading that we have
- 3:36at the top of Psalm 54. Okay. Is not
- 3:39David hiding among us in the strongholds
- 3:42at Horesh on the hill of Heca south of
- 3:48Jeson. Now your majesty come down
- 3:51whenever it pleases you to do so and we
- 3:54will be responsible for giving him into
- 3:57your hands. Talk about like not knowing
- 4:00how to mind your business. Okay, the
- 4:02Zifites have nothing to do with this,
- 4:04but they are scared to be on the wrong
- 4:07side of history. Well, unfortunately or
- 4:09ironically, they they do get on the
- 4:12wrong side of history. Okay, they they
- 4:13did pick the wrong side. Okay, but what
- 4:16they don't want is Saul and his raiding
- 4:19army to come into their territory and
- 4:22for them to be disloyal to Saul. The
- 4:25only problem is that God has already
- 4:28selected David. And so in this scenario,
- 4:32loyalty does not look like loyalty to
- 4:35the old king, but it looks like loyalty
- 4:38to the new king that God has anointed
- 4:40and that God has appointed. And so we
- 4:42get a whole psalm now about these
- 4:45zephites who betray David. And so uh
- 4:48this how the story ends. This is 1st
- 4:51Samuel chapter 23 27. Okay. Saul comes
- 4:55down. He's literally pursuing David.
- 4:58They're literally on a mountain. Saul is
- 5:00chasing David around this mountain. And
- 5:02then verse 27, a messenger came to Saul
- 5:04while he's chasing David, saying, "Come
- 5:06quickly. The Philistines are raiding the
- 5:09land." Then Saul broke off his pursuit
- 5:12of David and went to meet the
- 5:13Philistines. That is why they call this
- 5:15place Saha Hamalikoth. Hamelikoth. Okay.
- 5:20And David went up from there and lived
- 5:23in the strongholds of Engeti. All right.
- 5:26So that is 1st Samuel chapter 23.
- 5:29Obviously this psalm, okay, 1st Samuel
- 5:3223 is what inspires the psalm that we
- 5:35have here today. Psalm 54. Okay, so
- 5:38that's context. David is in distress.
- 5:41David's on the run. This is probably the
- 5:43most stressful, probably top three most
- 5:47stressful experiences of David's life. I
- 5:49just want you to imagine being a
- 5:51commander in the army, being the king's
- 5:54son-in-law, being the best friend of the
- 5:56crown prince, being a military hero,
- 6:00being the person that has killed the the
- 6:03famous enemy, Goliath, and then all of a
- 6:06sudden your leader is so jealous of you
- 6:11and so full of evil and hatred that he's
- 6:14throwing spears at you at the palace.
- 6:16You eventually have to leave. leave your
- 6:19wife and your friends and your family
- 6:22and everyone that you know to just be
- 6:25chased around the wilderness like a wild
- 6:27animal. I mean, this is just a hard
- 6:30season of David's life. In this very
- 6:32hard season, produces some gut-wrenching
- 6:34psalms. Okay, Psalm 54 starts out, "Save
- 6:37me, oh God, by your name. Vindicate me
- 6:40by your might. Hear my prayer, oh God.
- 6:42Listen to the words of my mouth.
- 6:44Arrogant foes are attacking me. Ruthless
- 6:47people are trying to kill me. People
- 6:49without regard for God. Surely God is my
- 6:53help. The Lord is the one who sustains
- 6:56me. That verse right there, surely the
- 6:59surely God is my help. That word help.
- 7:02Here's a nerdy nugget for the day is
- 7:04aair. That's the same word that that the
- 7:07Bible is going to use to describe Eve as
- 7:09a helper to Adam. And so that word is in
- 7:13no way, shape or form denigrating or
- 7:15like dishonoring. God actually describes
- 7:18himself in that way. David is not saying
- 7:20that God is beneath him. David is saying
- 7:22that God is strong enough to actually
- 7:24help him. And so when the Bible says
- 7:27that women are called to be a helpmate
- 7:30to men, that's not like a disrespectful
- 7:33or denigrating term. It's saying you're
- 7:35strong enough to actually be a help. And
- 7:38so that's actually a word that is so
- 7:41esteemed that God uses it for himself.
- 7:43Let evil recoil on those who slander me
- 7:46in your faithfulness destroy them. Let
- 7:48it let let there be backlash. Let let it
- 7:51recoil back on them. The evil that they
- 7:53mean for me, God, let it go ahead and
- 7:56backfire on them. I will sacrifice a
- 7:59free will offering to you. I will praise
- 8:00your name, Lord, for you are good. Here
- 8:02we go. I love this. This is verse seven.
- 8:04It's my favorite. You see how it starts
- 8:07in chapter 54:1 as save me, oh God, by
- 8:11your name. Vindicate me by your might.
- 8:13It's it's asking God to save. It's
- 8:15asking God to vindicate. But by the time
- 8:17we get to verse 7, you have delivered
- 8:20me. Now, you will deliver me. You have
- 8:24delivered me. It's already in past
- 8:26tense. By the time we get to the end of
- 8:28the psalm, David has already moved from,
- 8:31"Please Lord, deliver me to you have
- 8:34delivered me. I'm already delivered from
- 8:37all my troubles and my eyes have looked
- 8:40in triumph on my foes." It's funny when
- 8:44me and my wife are battling through
- 8:46infertility, I just began to say, "On
- 8:48the cross, Jesus said, "It is done."
- 8:52Not, "It will be done." No, it is done.
- 8:54It is paid for. So the healing that we
- 8:57need in our physical body so that we
- 8:59could produce children, it was purchased
- 9:02on Calvary. Like I'm not waiting for God
- 9:04to actually do anything. I have to walk
- 9:08in the full measure of what has already
- 9:11been done. You can see David doing the
- 9:13same process right here in Psalm 54. He
- 9:15starts out with save me, oh God, by your
- 9:17name. But then by the end of the psalm,
- 9:19he realized, I'm already saved. I have
- 9:23been delivered. You have delivered me
- 9:26from all my troubles. All right, let's
- 9:28dive into Psalm 55. Let's give context
- 9:32for Psalm 56. Actually, this will be
- 9:34helpful. Okay, so we're going to skip
- 9:35Psalm 55 really quick. We're going to go
- 9:37to Psalm 56. And uh the context for
- 9:40Psalm 56 is 1st Samuel chapter 21. So
- 9:44this is a nerdy nugget that I want to
- 9:45throw at you. Okay, the Psalms are not
- 9:48recounting what happened in David's life
- 9:50in chronological order. Okay, so things
- 9:53are not in chronological order because
- 9:55remember the context for Psalm 54 is 1st
- 9:58Samuel chapter 23, but the context for
- 10:01Psalm 56 is 1st Samuel chapter 21. Okay.
- 10:05So, we're going back two chapters in
- 10:08Samuel and we're going to read like well
- 10:11what what actually happened and we can
- 10:13read it right here in the heading of
- 10:15Psalm 56 says this for the director of
- 10:17music to the tune of a dove on distant
- 10:21oaks of David a mtam. Okay, so we we've
- 10:25got a mcam. Here's a nerdy nugget. We're
- 10:27actually about to get a bunch of MCTs.
- 10:30Okay, there are five MCTAs in book two.
- 10:33Remember, we're in book two of the
- 10:35Psalms right now. And so Psalm 56 all
- 10:39the way to Psalm 60. So 56, 57, 58, 59,
- 10:42and 60 are all going to be MCAMs. Now,
- 10:45before I even get into the context, I'm
- 10:47going to give you a nerdy nugget. Okay,
- 10:48the word MCTM, uh, I may have said this
- 10:51on a previous episode, could mean two
- 10:54things. I'm going to kind of read this
- 10:55from my iPad. There's two Hebrew words
- 10:58that MCTM can be based on. Okay. The
- 11:01first is ketm which means gold. Okay.
- 11:04That's the Hebrew word for gold. So a
- 11:06lot of people kind of refer to these
- 11:08mamms as golden psalms. Okay. Due to the
- 11:12similarity of the name to the Hebrew
- 11:14word for gold which is km. But this is
- 11:17not thought to be a good translation.
- 11:19Very popular but I don't think it's a
- 11:20good translation. There's a more likely
- 11:23okay to come from the Hebrew word kmu.
- 11:25Kmu which means to cover. Okay. to
- 11:30cover. Um this same idea can be found um
- 11:35in the cover covering in the sense of
- 11:38like atonement like your sins have been
- 11:40covered. Now this image is more likely
- 11:42to be about covering the lips. Okay? So
- 11:46that this is a secret psalm or a silent
- 11:48prayer uttered to Yahweh in times of
- 11:50distress. So this is not a golden psalm
- 11:53as some scholars and theologians would
- 11:55maybe you know talk about but this is
- 11:58more of a secret psalm or a silent
- 12:00prayer and you can see that like these
- 12:03are psalms of distress. Okay the things
- 12:05that all three of these psalms today
- 12:07have in common Psalm 54 55 and 56 is
- 12:10that these are psalms that come from a
- 12:12season of David's life where he is
- 12:14literally on the run for his life. He is
- 12:17scared that he is going to die. He is a
- 12:20political refugee. He is being hunted by
- 12:23a very powerful, very, very emotionally
- 12:27unstable and mentally unstable
- 12:29tormented, demonically tormented,
- 12:31probably actually schizophrenic king
- 12:33named Saul. And Saul has all the power
- 12:36of the nation to throw at hunting David.
- 12:40The fact that David survives is a
- 12:43testament to God's grace and covering on
- 12:48David's life. And so we're going to get
- 12:50these psalms where David is covering his
- 12:52lips to offer up to God these silent
- 12:55prayers while he's in the middle of
- 12:56distress. So Psalm 56. Okay, I dipped
- 12:59into some nerdy nuggets and now we're
- 13:00back into context clues. On most of the
- 13:02episode I moved from context clues to
- 13:04nerdy nuggets to timeless truth, but
- 13:06today we're kind of going back and forth
- 13:08between context and nerdy nuggets and
- 13:10context clues and nerdy nuggets. But
- 13:12you're a pro. You've been rocking with
- 13:13me for 270 days now, so you're good. Uh
- 13:16it says this for the director of music
- 13:18to the tune of a dove on distant oaks of
- 13:22David a miktam when the Philistines had
- 13:25seized him in Gath. All right. So let's
- 13:28go to 1st Samuel chapter 24. Okay,
- 13:31sorry. 1st Samuel chapter 21. 1st Samuel
- 13:34chapter 21. I don't know why I said
- 13:36chapter 24, but it's 1st Samuel chapter
- 13:3821. And we are going to start reading.
- 13:41Verse 10 says this. That day David fled
- 13:44from Saul and went to Akish, king of
- 13:46Gath. Now, if you remember, Goliath is
- 13:50from Gath. And so, literally, you kind
- 13:53of have to be crazy to go to the very
- 13:57hometown of the hero that you killed.
- 14:01Okay. But the servants of Akish said to
- 14:04him, "Isn't this David, the king of the
- 14:06land? Isn't he the one they sing about
- 14:08in their dances? Saul has slain his
- 14:10thousands. David, his tens of thousands.
- 14:13David took these words to heart and was
- 14:16very much afraid of Akish, king of Gath.
- 14:18So he pretended to be insane in their
- 14:21presence. And while he was in their
- 14:23hands, he acted like a madman, making
- 14:26marks on the doors of the gates and
- 14:28letting saliva run down his beard. Akish
- 14:30said to his servants, "Look at the man.
- 14:33He is insane. Why bring him to me? Am I
- 14:36so short of madman that you have to
- 14:38bring this fellow here to carry on like
- 14:41this in front of me? Must this man come
- 14:43into my house? Now, why is David even in
- 14:46Gath? Well, he's in Gath because there's
- 14:48no safe place in Israel for him to be.
- 14:50The thing that proceeds or precedes the
- 14:53story is that David is at a place called
- 14:56Knob and he says to a Himch, the priest,
- 14:59is there a sword? And he actually gets
- 15:01Goliath's sword. Okay? and he gets
- 15:04Goliath's sword and what's going to
- 15:05happen? There's an Edomite, okay, named
- 15:09Doe who is going to go snitch. This
- 15:13whole Psalm 54 to 56 should be just like
- 15:16the psalm for the snitches, okay? Cuz
- 15:19literally, it's just a bunch of people
- 15:20snitching on David. Like, he's here,
- 15:22he's here, he's here. And because Doe
- 15:26the Edomite snitches on David, what ends
- 15:29up happening is that David has to flee.
- 15:31Okay? And so that's the reason that he's
- 15:33even in Gath in the first place. Okay.
- 15:36And then after Gath, he escapes to the
- 15:38cave of Adullum. And he's just on the
- 15:41run, on the move. No home, no rest, no
- 15:45predictability to his life. Just
- 15:47literally on the run, just living day by
- 15:50day, trying to survive. Okay? And so out
- 15:54of this, we get just song psalms of
- 15:57anguish. Okay? Remember I told you in in
- 16:00chapter 54:7. So Psalm 54:7 kind of
- 16:04ended with you have delivered. Well,
- 16:07guess what? We're going to get that
- 16:08again. Look at Psalm 56:13. Okay, Psalm
- 16:1256:13
- 16:14says this, "For you have delivered me
- 16:16from death and my feet from stumbling
- 16:19that I may walk before God in the light
- 16:23of life." So uh chapter 56 or Psalm 56
- 16:26starts with be merciful to me my God for
- 16:29my enemies are in heart pursuit all day
- 16:31long they press their attack my
- 16:33adversaries pursue me all day long in
- 16:35their pride many are attacking me okay
- 16:38so it's like please pursue me be
- 16:39merciful or or please have mercy on me
- 16:43please pity me please uh rescue me and
- 16:46then we go from be merciful to me to you
- 16:51have delivered me from death we move
- 16:53from present tense to past tense. This
- 16:56is already done. By the time he gets to
- 16:58the end of the psalm, he's acknowledging
- 17:01you've already delivered me. You've
- 17:03already done the thing that I started
- 17:05this prayer asking you for. It's already
- 17:08done. And uh I just want to encourage
- 17:11anyone who prays on a regular basis.
- 17:14Your prayer should follow the same
- 17:15pattern. Lord God, would you please give
- 17:17us kids? You've already given us kids.
- 17:20God, would you please heal us from
- 17:22cancer? the cancer is already healed.
- 17:25You have healed me. I got a good friend
- 17:29whose dad did have cancer and he felt
- 17:32like they the their family had a promise
- 17:34from God that his dad would be healed of
- 17:36cancer and then his dad died, you know,
- 17:38of cancer. And his way of interpreting
- 17:41that was that, well, now he's healed
- 17:45because he's in heaven. And so whether
- 17:47or not someone gets healed while they're
- 17:50alive doesn't mean that they didn't they
- 17:52didn't get healed. God, you have healed
- 17:55me. You have whether or not I receive
- 17:58the physical manifestation of that
- 18:00healing here on earth or whether I
- 18:02receive the physical manifestation of
- 18:03that healing in the afterlife when I'm
- 18:05with you forever in heaven. I have been
- 18:09healed. And and David comes to this
- 18:11conclusion. I have been delivered. you
- 18:15have delivered me. I'm not going to keep
- 18:17asking you to do something that you've
- 18:19already done. I think our timeless truth
- 18:23uh needs to be that whatever we're
- 18:25asking God for, you have to move into a
- 18:27position of he's already done it and I
- 18:30may as well praise him in advance for
- 18:33the thing that he's already done.
- 18:35Whether I see it here on earth or
- 18:37whether I see it in heaven, it's already
- 18:40done. It's funny. I I was talking to a
- 18:43woman at a church recently and uh I was
- 18:45just praying for people in the lobby and
- 18:47I said, "What can I pray for you for?"
- 18:49And she said, "Well, I'm already healed,
- 18:51but my body hasn't gotten a memo yet."
- 18:53Don't you love that? I'm already healed,
- 18:55but my body hasn't caught up with what
- 18:58God has said yet. And can you pray that
- 19:01my body would come into alignment with
- 19:03what the Holy Spirit has said, "But I
- 19:05believe I'm healed." And I began to say,
- 19:08"Yeah, we're going to pray for the
- 19:10symptoms to actually match up to the
- 19:12source of healing you already have." And
- 19:14you have a the King of Kings, the Lord
- 19:17of Lords, who's pronounced healing over
- 19:18your life, and your body hasn't gotten
- 19:21the memo yet. Family, the wait is over.
- 19:25My brand new book, Crushing Chaos, is
- 19:28out now and available everywhere books
- 19:31are sold. Literally today, I walked into
- 19:35a Barnes & Noble and I signed a bunch of
- 19:37copies at a physical location. So, you
- 19:40can grab this book at a physical Barnes
- 19:43& Noble or you can go to a Books a
- 19:45Million or Amazon or anywhere books are
- 19:48sold and grab a copy. If you enjoy
- 19:51reading the Bible from an ancient
- 19:53perspective, if you understand that the
- 19:56beauty of scripture is actually knowing
- 19:58it in context, then you'll love this
- 20:01book. And if there's any chaos in your
- 20:03personal life, I think that reading the
- 20:06Bible from an ancient perspective can
- 20:08actually help to crush the chaos in your
- 20:10life. I think this book is going to be a
- 20:12New York Times bestseller. I really do.
- 20:14I think we wrote a good one. I think you
- 20:17should get a copy today. All right, back
- 20:20to the episode. One other timeless truth
- 20:22that I want to give you for today is
- 20:24that Psalm 54 and Psalm 55, we didn't
- 20:27talk a lot about Psalm 55, but really my
- 20:30big key verse is going to come from
- 20:32Psalm 55 today. Let me just grab it in
- 20:35my Bible. Psalm 54 and Psalm 55 give
- 20:37voice to the personal pain of betrayal
- 20:41by close friends and trusted loved ones.
- 20:45We can all relate to this form of human
- 20:48and emotional pain. So, I want you to go
- 20:49to Psalm 55
- 20:5212-4. Psalm 55:12-14.
- 20:55Here's what actually makes these psalms
- 20:56really, really sad. Says this, "If an
- 20:58enemy were insulting me, I could endure
- 21:01it. If a foe were rising against me, I
- 21:05could hide. But it is you, a man like
- 21:08myself, my companion,
- 21:11my close friend." You see what David is
- 21:13saying? Saying, "If it was an enemy, I
- 21:15could endure it. Like, it'd be okay. I
- 21:18could hide. But the betrayal of a close
- 21:20friend, of a brother, of a companion,
- 21:23this is unbearable. With whom I once
- 21:25enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of
- 21:28God, we enjoyed the presence of God
- 21:31together. As we walked about among the
- 21:34worshippers. Okay, so that's verses 12
- 21:35to 14. Now skip over to verse 20. My
- 21:38companion attacks his friends. He
- 21:41violates his covenant. His talk is
- 21:45smooth as butter, yet wars in his heart.
- 21:47His words are more soothing than oil,
- 21:49yet they are drawn swords. One of the
- 21:51things that I think is timelessly true
- 21:54is that we're not only going to
- 21:56experience betrayal or hurt uh by those
- 22:00who are sworn enemies, but we're also
- 22:02going to experience betrayal and hurt by
- 22:04those closest to us, by friends, by
- 22:07people that we would have never seen it
- 22:09coming. And David goes ahead and gives
- 22:12voice to like that kind of deep personal
- 22:15pain. The thing that David is lamenting
- 22:18in these psalms in particular is not
- 22:21just that random people are attacking
- 22:23him or that want to see him die or
- 22:25trying to kill him, but that people that
- 22:27he loves and cares for and at one point
- 22:30trusted. And man, that sucks. Like
- 22:33that's just hard. There are some friends
- 22:36that I've had for decades and there are
- 22:38some friends that I've had to mourn the
- 22:40loss of not being that person's friend
- 22:43anymore. And that stuff stings and that
- 22:47is uh there's a temptation to just put a
- 22:49wall of defense up. But what we see in
- 22:52the Psalms is David's vulnerable or
- 22:55David's choice to remain soft-hearted
- 22:57and vulnerable even when there's a
- 22:59temptation to become callous when
- 23:01there's personal betrayal in your life.
- 23:03And so I think that's not just relevant
- 23:06for David's life. I think that's
- 23:07relevant for your life. And obviously
- 23:09that was relevant for Jesus's life. I
- 23:11mean, it's not like some random person
- 23:13betrayed him. One of his disciples that
- 23:14he had spent 3 years with betrayed him.
- 23:17And I think all of us have people in our
- 23:19life who we would have never expected
- 23:21that they would be the person that would
- 23:23betray us. I've got a friend, I won't
- 23:24say his name, who found out that his
- 23:27wife was cheating on him with his best
- 23:30man at their wedding. Like talk about
- 23:32just personal betrayal, like close
- 23:36personal betrayal. And so for people who
- 23:39are work walking through those kinds of
- 23:41scenarios, Psalm 55, Psalm 54, 555, and
- 23:4556 are for you. You're not alone. You're
- 23:48not the only person that's walked
- 23:50through the pain of personal betrayal.
- 23:53And you're in good company because so is
- 23:55David and so is Jesus. And J David's
- 23:58words are not as relevant for him or for
- 24:01Jesus. They're relevant for you as well.
- 24:04All right, I'll see you tomorrow for day
