- 0:00for over two decades david milgard and
- 0:02his mother worked to prove his innocence
- 0:05while he was behind bars arrested for
- 0:07murder at just 16 he was finally freed
- 0:10at age 39.
- 0:13lawyer david asper helped them working
- 0:15to get milgard released from prison in
- 0:171992 then fully exonerated in 1997. it
- 0:22filled my heart with joy
- 0:24to see him as a free person
- 0:27and needless to say
- 0:31it's a really tough day today milgard
- 0:33was passing through saskatoon with
- 0:35friends in 1969 when he was arrested for
- 0:38the rape and murder of gail miller
- 0:40police said evidence pointed to the home
- 0:42where he was staying for one night only
- 0:45he was convicted the next year i don't
- 0:47know how you can lead a normal life
- 0:48after spending so many years in jail at
- 0:51such a young age
- 0:52cecil rosner co-wrote a book on mill
- 0:55garden and his research helped clear his
- 0:57name when we looked at the totality of
- 0:59all the evidence we were both convinced
- 1:01that he was innocent not only that he
- 1:03was innocent but we knew who the real
- 1:05killer was the real killer was larry
- 1:07fisher he'd been living in the basement
- 1:09of the same house where milgard stayed
- 1:12in saskatoon in 1980 fischer's ex-wife
- 1:15even told police she believed he was the
- 1:17likely killer but police were
- 1:19unconvinced for years lawyers and
- 1:21journalists accused police of tunnel
- 1:23vision dna evidence later conclusively
- 1:26proved milgard's innocence there's no
- 1:28dollars in sense value on the kind of
- 1:30things that
- 1:31you know are lost seven years after his
- 1:34release the government awarded david
- 1:35milgard and his family 10 million
- 1:37dollars milgard then spent years
- 1:40campaigning for an independent review
- 1:42board and advocating for people
- 1:44wrongfully convicted david milgard died
