- 0:04hockney was born in 1937 in a city
- 0:07called bradford
- 0:09he lived with his parents and grew up
- 0:11with three brothers and one sister
- 0:14after he finished school he attended
- 0:16bradford art college in 1953 where he
- 0:19achieved a first class in his degree
- 0:21it was here he learnt about the
- 0:23fundamentals of art and mainly used oil
- 0:25paints after he graduated he wanted to
- 0:28go on to do better things so he left
- 0:30bradford and headed to london to study
- 0:32at the royal college of art
- 0:34it was here that he became one of the
- 0:36main influences of pop art pop art is
- 0:39based on popular culture such as
- 0:40celebrities music advertisements and
- 0:42more after a few years in london he
- 0:45moved to los angeles in 1964.
- 0:48he was mesmerised by la swimming pools
- 0:50and other glistening surfaces
- 0:52[Music]
- 0:53he was inspired by how water interacted
- 0:56with light
- 0:58[Music]
- 1:01in the early 80s hockney took to
- 1:03photography
- 1:05he took inspiration from picasso through
- 1:07cubism
- 1:08he shot hundreds of photographs and
- 1:10piece them all together to create a
- 1:12masterpiece
- 1:13you can see how his style develops
- 1:16it took him a week to take all the
- 1:18pictures for this one and even longer to
- 1:20collage it all together
- 1:22when hockley turned 50 in 1987 he
- 1:25adopted two dashens named stanley and
- 1:27rupert
- 1:28they soon became his best friends and
- 1:30also the subject of his artwork
- 1:33his friend back in yorkshire jonathan
- 1:35silva transformed the salts mill
- 1:37building in solenter which is on the
- 1:39outskirts of bradford and he wanted to
- 1:40showcase hockney's artwork
- 1:43he transformed this dilapidated building
- 1:45into an incredible art space which also
- 1:47helped bring some economy into the
- 1:49suffering village at the time
- 1:52jonathan took ill so hockney flew back
- 1:54to the uk and stayed in bridlington he
- 1:56drove across the yorkshire walls to
- 1:58visit jonathan and wetherby before he
- 2:00sadly passed away

- 2:02hockney painted this route from memory
- 2:04when he got back to california
- 2:08in the early 2000s hockney decided to
- 2:11travel a bit of europe he used
- 2:12watercolors while still maintaining the
- 2:14bright bold colors he loved to use
- 2:18after travelling he returned to the
- 2:19seaside town of bridlington in east
- 2:21yorkshire
- 2:23it was here he developed the love of the
- 2:24yorkshire walls
- 2:26the rolling hills woodlands and
- 2:28farmlands inspired his artwork
- 2:31and he often returned to the same places
- 2:33to catch the landscapes in different
- 2:35seasons
- 2:38in 2008 he permanently moved to
- 2:40bridlington he started to explore
- 2:42digital art by using apps on his iphone
- 2:45still using bold colors he captures the
- 2:47subjects with great detail
- 2:50hockney also used his computer to create
- 2:52and manipulate his artwork
- 2:54in 2010 david pockney bought one of the
- 2:57first releases of the ipads at the time
- 3:00he was excited to have a bigger screen
- 3:02he returned to california for a trip and
- 3:04produced these ipad drawings of the
- 3:06yosemite
- 3:10in 2011 hockney was voted the most
- 3:13influential british painter
- 3:16hockney still continues to create art in
- 3:19his 80s
