- 0:05four houses down Alle about four houses
- 0:07down here's where the sock is
- 0:10found it's got Deon and Damon's blood on
- 0:12it and this is Darren
- 0:17sock beautiful homes man look at
- 0:21that this has got to be it on your side
- 0:24right here yeah there it is right on
- 0:25left it's all lit up that's it right
- 0:27there yeah so was in this Alleyway this
- 0:31is high-end District here there's some
- 0:32alarms lights motion detectors and
- 0:35things you know I think lights would be
- 0:36popping on and off
- 0:39here you know regie this the thing that
- 0:41gets me is why do a socket attached to
- 0:43this murderer and dropped here in this
- 0:45Alleyway and where do you go from here
- 0:46if you're not from this neighborhood
- 0:48this house where it's at the way it's
- 0:50secluded It Don't Fit the other side of
- 0:53the ran through the back out the
- 0:56alleyway the sock it just doesn't fit
- 0:58any bad guy will tell you they're always
- 1:00looking for a way out you know they
- 1:02don't want to be cornered and you back
- 1:04here you would get
- 1:06[Music]
- 1:11cornered right near the karate
- 1:13artery Dolly Routier had no criminal
- 1:16record in fact up to this point she
- 1:18never had much involvement with the
- 1:20police aside from watching Law and
- 1:23Order could she really be the kind of
- 1:25person who would kill her own children
- 1:27and then slash her own throat
- 1:32the 911 call seemed like it should have
- 1:34been a critical part of dar's
- 1:37Defense what's going on
- 1:40man I mean you listen to the call sounds
- 1:42it sounds like a legit call I mean you
- 1:44could hear a real frantic woman her
- 1:47emotions are really running
- 1:49[Music]
- 1:51High Toby shook who prosecuted darly
- 1:55never brought into the 911
- 1:57call to him it was all an act A
- 2:00desperate woman who resorted to
- 2:02Desperate Measures to get what she
- 2:03wanted I think what got the
- 2:05investigator's attention first were very
- 2:07low crime neighborhood not no no violent
- 2:09crimes occurs in their neighborhood and
- 2:11it's obvious in this crime that the
- 2:13object of the attack were the boys these
- 2:15were devastating wounds penetrating
- 2:17knife wounds that went through their
- 2:18entire bodies Charlie rer had a
- 2:21superficial wound to her neck and one to
- 2:23her arm 2 days after she was released
- 2:26from the hospital she came to the police
- 2:28station this would be about four or five
- 2:30days after the murder and showed up with
- 2:32these massive bruises on the inside of
- 2:34her arms how many days later she showed
- 2:37up two days after being released
- 2:38hospital I believe she she realized the
- 2:40police weren't believing her story we
- 2:41showed all those bruises to the nurses
- 2:44who attended her and the uh the
- 2:46Physicians that attended her they said
- 2:49that these bruises weren't there my
- 2:52argument uh and maintained also is if
- 2:54this supposed to be some guy who's in
- 2:56there who wants to to kill darly rouer
- 3:00uh and he's hitting her so hard that
- 3:01he's calling these massive bruises on
- 3:03the inside of arms how come he didn't
- 3:04smash her in the face you know how come
- 3:05he didn't bust her in the nose in the
- 3:07mouth she can identify why do you leave
- 3:09her alive so she can identify but of
- 3:12course darling got amnesia he the
- 3:14luckiest killer in the world the witness
- 3:16who can put you on death row she gets
- 3:18amnesia and can't remember anything
- 3:19about you I agree with you I mean
- 3:21somebody breaking and killing two kids
- 3:23and she's left with a cut why isn't she
- 3:26finished off right just didn't make
- 3:28sense and her story just wouldn't add
- 3:30enough No Stranger would come in the
- 3:32house that way it's very illogical uh
- 3:34you know he said first of all we look at
- 3:37uh it's very low crime area these kinds
- 3:39of killings don't happen secondly this
- 3:41neighborhood is hard to get in and get
- 3:43out of uh if you're going to commit a
- 3:44crime like this especially or even a
- 3:46burglar you want some easy access you
- 3:48had to kind of wander around through the
- 3:50neighborhood yeah the Andrea yat is that
- 3:52that was in Texas correct she drowned
- 3:55her children I mean and they attribute
- 3:57that something to postpartum depression
- 3:59did you think of that in these terms at
- 4:01all no psychotic there was no evidence
- 4:02she was suffering from anything like
- 4:04Andrea Yates had a long psychological
- 4:06history and was hearing voices this was
- 4:09a this is a killing that you have then
- 4:11you want to cover the crime up I know
- 4:13you're not a doctor but how would you
- 4:15sum up her behavior and describing her
- 4:18how would you describe her as a
- 4:20person she's a
- 4:23[Music]
- 4:26psychopath I got I got to tell you you
- 4:28this is some hell of a bruise is
- 4:30how does you hold somebody down I don't
- 4:32know and create a bruise like that it
- 4:34look like a truck ran over this guy was
- 4:36holding it down she had to be struggling
- 4:38to create bruises like this because they
- 4:40run from here down to the wrist we only
- 4:44got circumstantial aage got no witness
- 4:46statements but his circumstantial
- 4:48evidence and the way he explained it
- 4:50makes it look very bad for
- 4:52Dolly a close friend of Dolly's
- 4:55testified that she had become depressed
- 4:57after the birth of her third son and had
- 5:00even threatened to commit
- 5:02suicide and several other people told us
- 5:05that darly and Darren had been having
- 5:07problems including arguments about money
- 5:10keeping up with the Joneses was tearing
- 5:12them
- 5:13apart there's a lot of evidence here I
- 5:15mean you know I I just don't buy the
- 5:17bloody sock 75 yards away found in the
- 5:20alley I don't buy the Intruder you know
- 5:24guys come in what do they do you know
- 5:26one or two whoever it was comes in and
- 5:28kills two kids like that and she gets
- 5:31slashed how come they don't kill
- 5:34her 5 weeks into our
- 5:36investigation Reggie and I had
- 5:38completely changed our opinion of darly
- 5:41we began thinking more and more that she
- 5:44was where she belonged behind
- 5:48bars but we'd soon come across evidence
- 5:51that would take everything we learned
- 5:52about this case so far and turn it on
- 5:55its head somebody came into my home and
- 5:58murdered my children children and me dad
- 6:01somebody you left your children for
- 6:03de Double Exposure premier's next Friday
- 6:06at 10 on court
- 6:10[Music]
- 6:13TV look at that blank stand man at this
- 6:16point in our investigation we had
- 6:18learned a lot about Dolly roer we knew
- 6:21that at the time of the murder she and
- 6:23her husband Darren had been fighting
- 6:25about
- 6:26money was it the mom Dary
- 6:30even though she sustained some uh some
- 6:33wounds right near the kateed artery so
- 6:36he missed it by a few
- 6:40[Music]
- 6:44millim a few days after they were
- 6:47murdered 5-year-old Damon and 6-year-old
- 6:50Devon were laid to
- 6:54rest Deon and Damon yep
- 6:58[Music]
- 7:03Devon Damon little
- 7:09kids cemetery West Haven Memorial Park
- 7:13the final resting place in those small
- 7:16little boys Deon and Damon
- 7:19man one of the most vicious murders in
- 7:22Texas in our town in the country 8 days
- 7:25before his birthday
- 7:27[Music]
- 7:31just days after the burials a local news
- 7:33station broadcast footage of Dolly at
- 7:35the grave site the prosecution used the
- 7:38tape as proof that dolly was a Sinister
- 7:41monster out of control and out of touch
- 7:43with
- 7:45reality but dar's mother and sister say
- 7:48the tape was taken completely out of
- 7:52context we met them at their home in
- 7:55Plano Texas Two Towns over from where
- 7:57the murders took place
- 8:01the big story about this is the Silly
- 8:04String that was your idea for the Silly
- 8:06String you're the one that bought that
- 8:08and brought that there and you can tell
- 8:10us about it it was the most ridiculous
- 8:12thing you know Devon was fixing to be
- 8:15seven we were having a birthday party
- 8:17for him he was so excited and then all
- 8:20this happened you know his friends had
- 8:22gone out and bought gifts and then we
- 8:24had to explain to his friends and the
- 8:26neighborhood children that someone had
- 8:29come in and killed them and I mean how
- 8:31do you explain that to Little Children
- 8:33You know little children don't
- 8:35understand the grieving process like
- 8:37adults they don't understand it death
- 8:39and you know these horrible things that
- 8:42happen so what children there that day
- 8:44in addition to yourselves we had a
- 8:46prayer service a prayer service and then
- 8:48we planned to be there at the grave site
- 8:51that evening so all the kids could come
- 8:54and since obviously we weren't going to
- 8:56have the party it was just a way for us
- 8:59to all get gather and to be together and
- 9:00to feel close and comfort and it wasn't
- 9:04a celebration of their death oh yay
- 9:07they're dead woohoo it
- 9:09was it's their birthday you know you see
- 9:12that that's the thing that was looked at
- 9:15examined by so many people people said
- 9:17was wrong it was inappropriate it was so
- 9:20ridiculous they sat there and they
- 9:21watched that tape over and over and over
- 9:23again who watched the jurs the jurs they
- 9:25didn't watch anything but the Silly
- 9:27String part so you I was never allowed
- 9:30to testify nobody ever asked me a single
- 9:33question about that that's too bad so
- 9:35darly sets in in death throw because of
- 9:38silly string and overzealous prosecutors
- 9:40and bad police
- 9:42work she was wonderful she really was
- 9:45and it's very lonely without
- 9:52her she's walking around with a lot of
- 9:54guilt she really feels that she put her
- 9:58sister
- 10:00on death row with that silly stream
- 10:02incident meant so much to the jurors
- 10:04that they watched it so many times
- 10:05during a conviction of Dolly and if it
- 10:08would have been explained the way she
- 10:10did I think they would have seen it in a
- 10:12lot different way later that evening we
- 10:15met with Tom Holland's head a retired
- 10:17DEA agent troubled by what took place at
- 10:20dar's trial he spent the past few years
- 10:23taking a look at the case for himself he
- 10:25agreed that a 22nd tape of a woman
- 10:28shooting Silly String
- 10:29was the final blow that convicted dolly
