4. 0:17disturbing call police find six-year-old
5. 0:24Devon routier and his five year old
6. 0:26brother Damon stabbed to death on the
7. 0:28living-room floor
8. 0:29their 26 year old mother dolly routier
9. 0:32is alive with bleeding profusely from
10. 0:34multiple stab wounds and a gash across
11. 0:36her throat her husband Darren is
12. 0:39unharmed shocked the couple's third
13. 0:43child rake only seven months old is
14. 0:45found safe upstairs in his crib
15. 0:48Jolly's rushed to the hospital despite
16. 0:51massive bleeding doctors are able to
17. 0:54save her life with a grisly double
18. 0:57murder on their hands and the community
19. 1:00in panic detectives frantically searched
20. 1:02for the killer eleven days later the
21. 1:06police announced that Darlie routier has
22. 1:08been arrested for the ruthless
23. 1:09cold-blooded killing of her own two
24. 1:12children after only a single day of
25. 1:15deliberations she's found guilty and
26. 1:17sentenced to death by lethal injection
27. 1:19for over ten years
28. 1:22routier has maintained her innocence
29. 1:23claiming that she and her children had
30. 1:26been attacked during a botched robbery
31. 1:28and that the real killer is still out
32. 1:30there
33. 1:35my name is Gerry Palace I'm a private
34. 1:38investigator and former detective with
35. 1:41the New York City Police Department
36. 1:42since the transcript the part that they
37. 1:45blacked out Court TV has asked me and my
38. 1:47partner former NYPD homicide detective
39. 1:51Reggie Britt to investigate this is
40. 1:53really one way this testimony the case
41. 1:55became big news and erupted into a media
42. 1:58circus the question on everyone's mind
43. 2:01could a mother really have done
44. 2:03something like this to her own children
45. 2:05establish the time of death between 30
46. 2:08and to testify the trial before heading
47. 2:16down to Dallas we read through the
48. 2:17transcripts police records and other
49. 2:20court documents in our New York City
50. 2:21office but successful investigations
51. 2:25aren't about documents and records the
52. 2:27truth isn't in the folders it's in the
53. 2:30eyes of the people who know what really
54. 2:31happened
55. 2:45they take their death road down yet very
56. 2:47seriously impacts it this is not the
57. 2:50place to commit a murder because you're
58. 2:53gonna go meet your maker for sure
59. 3:01at the time of the murders darlie's
60. 3:04husband Darrin was upstairs asleep their
61. 3:07third son in the nearby crib
62. 3:10Darrin told investigators that when he
63. 3:13heard his wife scream he jumped out of
64. 3:15bed and ran downstairs assuming that an
65. 3:18attacker was in the house
66. 3:20he's been the controversial figure ever
67. 3:22since
68. 3:23some say he was involved in the crime

71. 3:31downstairs and galia pop some popcorn
72. 3:34and everything the boys went upstairs
73. 3:36and got their blankets and their pillows
74. 3:38and it all laid down on the floor and me

76. 3:42different things so I went up back
77. 3:46upstairs and it was probably you know 11
78. 3:48o'clock or so after the news probably
79. 3:51and climbed into bed and went sleep and
80. 3:55the next thing I hear was this glass
81. 3:58break but you know but far away and then
82. 4:04I heard Darla just screaming you know
83. 4:06Darren dear dear dear I mean just
84. 4:08freaking out I mean you know yeah I
85. 4:10jarred me and you know I jumped up I
86. 4:13would run down the stairs as fast as I
87. 4:15can
88. 4:16I looked up I'm yelling at her what the
89. 4:18hell happened
90. 4:19you know she grabs a phone she's running
91. 4:21back and forth I'm trying to give Devon
92. 4:23CPR and I as soon as I blowing into his
93. 4:25mouth I mean air just comes out of his
94. 4:27chest I didn't know what to do you know
95. 4:31I mean you know you're just you're just
96. 4:34freaking I mean just trying to do
97. 4:36everything that you can
98. 4:38trying to logically think about what
99. 4:40just happened and then you're you know
100. 4:43and all you can do it just set there on
101. 4:45the curb and watch your whole life just
102. 4:48be gone around is this little tent right
103. 4:53the small little town yeah nothing like
104. 4:56this ever have the stranger came in at
105. 4:57my house stranger came in and killed my
106. 5:00kids took my kids and almost took my
107. 5:02wife ain't if dolly had died I'd be on
108. 5:03death row you would be with this police
109. 5:06department that's exactly true because
110. 5:08the truth has nothing to do with it
111. 5:10somebody had to be responsible for it
112. 5:13did the police question you as a suspect
113. 5:15did you think that they thought you were
114. 5:17a suspect I think I was so stupid I
115. 5:20didn't even think that they thought it
116. 5:21was possible
117. 5:23well how did you feel when they arrested
118. 5:24your wife devastated and in shock and
119. 5:31wanting to prove that they were wrong
120. 5:35you say you didn't realize she was hurt
121. 5:37until you came back in the house right
122. 5:39is that true yeah what did you say - HUD
123. 5:41him you made her a promise when I helped
124. 5:46her get on the gurney I made her a
125. 5:47promise that I would find out who did
126. 5:49this does she ask you for that right
127. 5:52yeah she said because she didn't think
128. 5:54she's gonna make it really and then what
129. 5:58did she say to you that you promised her
130. 5:59that what'd she say to you what my words
131. 6:01she said I want you to promise me that
132. 6:03she found out who did this and take care
133. 6:05of it
134. 6:12I was looking at him and looking into
135. 6:14his eyes realizing just how much he's
136. 6:17still in love with his wife and when he
137. 6:20talked about those boys he suffered at
138. 6:29her trial Dolly's defense attorney
139. 6:31relied on evidence found at the house
140. 6:33which he argued pointed towards an
141. 6:35attempted break-in but the jury didn't
142. 6:38buy it
143. 6:42got one more one more DNA yeah name
144. 6:54today
145. 6:56now Dolly's lawyers claimed that the
146. 6:59cops missed critical forensic evidence
147. 7:01including a bloody fingerprint that
148. 7:03contained unknown male DNA Steve Cooper
149. 7:08heads up darlie's new defense team the
150. 7:10stage theory was that Darlie Linn
151. 7:13murdered her sons then staged the crime
152. 7:17scene and then inflicted the wounds on
153. 7:21herself but we have a couple of things
154. 7:23that match to an intruder that only for
155. 7:26instance this bloody fingerprint then we
156. 7:29can paint a picture that would
157. 7:30demonstrate that in fact there was a non
158. 7:32family member in the house that night
159. 7:35this is all new evidence this basically
160. 7:38right there wasn't in the record at all
161. 7:40no improvements in DNA testing in ten
162. 7:42years is just incredible
163. 7:44well if Dolly Lin didn't do it then who
164. 7:48did or why I think it's quite likely
165. 7:50that it was a burglary attempt and
166. 7:55somebody wasn't expecting to find an
167. 7:57adult and two children on the
168. 7:58living-room floor at 3 o'clock in the
169. 8:00morning but this is a crime that we
170. 8:02thoroughly watery I believe so I think
171. 8:05it's the most likely probability the
172. 8:08state's case was entirely circumstantial
173. 8:11and mostly involving around character
174. 8:15assassination wanting to claim that
175. 8:18these children were in her way and she
176. 8:20was just this large breasted blonde
177. 8:23haired you know floozy in a Dallas
178. 8:26suburb who was you know trying to get
179. 8:28rid of these bothersome kids how
180. 8:31confident do you feel that the courts
181. 8:33may give you this I mean we're in the
182. 8:37state of Texas where we like to kill
183. 8:40people and our courts uphold the vast
184. 8:44majority of death sentences
185. 8:50looking at the evidence there's some
186. 8:53fingerprint evidence there that that
187. 8:55doesn't match right anybody right then
188. 8:58the supposedly the intruders could have
189. 9:01been a setup for a burglary or something
190. 9:03like that that burglary that went real
191. 9:04bad this is all circumstantial she
192. 9:06really didn't have a motive
193. 9:08what's the motive it's the possibility
194. 9:09that she might be the wrong person so
195. 9:13far the picture being painted for us
196. 9:15wasn't pretty no motive outdated DNA
197. 9:19testing and new evidence that if true
198. 9:21pointed to an unknown male intruder but
199. 9:25three weeks into our investigation we'd
200. 9:28already spent more time looking into
201. 9:30this case than the original detectives
202. 9:32had and at this point we had serious
203. 9:35doubts if Darlie routier was the right
204. 9:37person
205. 9:46by this jury Palace request he'd be good
206. 9:50please give me a call we were trying to
207. 9:51get in touch with the detectives who
208. 9:53have been involved with the case we
209. 9:56wanted to know what they had to say
210. 9:57about the new DNA evidence that pointed
211. 10:00to a male perpetrator maybe but so far
212. 10:04we weren't having much luck finding them
213. 10:07must be small department when
214. 10:09investigators first arrived on the scene
215. 10:11they found dolly bleeding from wounds to
216. 10:14her arms and neck screaming hysterically
217. 10:16that someone had broken into her home
218. 10:18and killed her two sons a search of the
219. 10:22residence found nothing missing but the
220. 10:24police did find the murder weapon a
221. 10:26knife from Oh tears own kitchen then
222. 10:29something puzzling in an alley almost a
223. 10:32football fields distance from the house
224. 10:34lay one of her husband's socks splatter
225. 10:37wood spots of blood later identified as
226. 10:39belonging to their two murdered sons
227. 10:42from all our years on the force Reggie
228. 10:45and I had come across some strange
229. 10:46pieces of evidence but this one stumped
230. 10:49us it just didn't make any sense the
231. 10:54only thing I don't like about it as far
232. 10:55as the intruder theory goes is the fact
233. 10:58that somebody broke in goes in to commit
234. 11:02some sort of burglary kills two kids
235. 11:04nearly kills the mother and leaves and
236. 11:0775 yards away down an alley is a [ __ ] is
237. 11:10a sock belonging to the husband that has
238. 11:13some blood on it at trial the
239. 11:15prosecution set out to prove that dolly
240. 11:17had murdered her two boys ransacked the
241. 11:20living room so it would look like a
242. 11:21break-in - one of our husbands sucks in
243. 11:25blood from both of her dead sons ran
244. 11:27down an alley to plant the sock then
245. 11:29came back stamped her on with a knife
246. 11:31used the same knife to slash our own
247. 11:34throat then called 9-1-1
