- 0:01[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 0:02It's Regionals.
- 0:03"Where Have All the Children Gone"
- 0:04is a very dark piece of music.
- 0:06The highest group routine--
- 0:07"Where Have All the Children Gone."
- 0:09ABBY: 280 acts, and they were first.
- 0:12CATHY: Brooke is now wearing Vivi's top.
- 0:15I'm not happy.
- 0:15I don't want Brooke wearing the costume.
- 0:17My daughter is dancing-- CATHY: I don't approve.
- 0:18- --in three minutes. - Well, I'm sorry.
- 0:20KELLY: And you're taking the costume off of her back.
- 0:21CATHY: I know. - Go back to your studio.
- 0:23You know what? I'm not.
- 0:24I'm here to stay, so like it.
- 0:26ABBY (VOICEOVER): Coming up on "Dance Moms"--
- 0:28Two-- arms, Nia!
- 0:29Three-- where are those arms?
- 0:30I want her in an Afro.
- 0:32HOLLY: The same type of thing.
- 0:33She should just pick some cotton or something.
- 0:35That's the next thing she'll pull out.
- 0:36I just wanted to warn you that Dawn Check is here
- 0:38to talk to you.
- 0:39She should be here to pay her bill.
- 0:41You never paid for the rest of your solo.
- 0:44DAWN: You broke the contract.
- 0:45I don't owe you anything.
- 0:47I'll see you in court.
- 0:48I feel like the eyelashes are drooping.
- 0:50Do I need to staple your eyebrows up?
- 0:51I pay, what, almost $100,000 a year in private school tuition,
- 0:56and you're telling me I can't afford you?
- 0:57I did not say that.
- 0:58Right now--
- 0:59That's what you just told me.
- 1:00[THEME MUSIC]
- 1:02THEME SONG: Get up.
- 1:03Get on the floor.
- 1:05My world is with my girls, living on the dance floor.
- 1:12[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 1:17ABBY: This weekend we were in Providence, Rhode Island,
- 1:20an hour outside of Boston.
- 1:22Some of the most prestigious dance studios in the country
- 1:24are there--
- 1:25tough schools, tough competitors.
- 1:27And you really held your own.
- 1:29You won that victory cup.
- 1:31You killed it.
- 1:32I'm very proud.
- 1:33[APPLAUSE]
- 1:35Excellent.
- 1:36I'm very proud of every one of you,
- 1:37and you know I don't say that too often.
- 1:39I'm also am very proud that all the moms kept their mouths shut
- 1:42and didn't say anything to me.
- 1:44See how much nicer it is when everything goes so smoothly?
- 1:47It was wonderful.
- 1:48Now if only the moms could learn to be
- 1:50team players like their daughters,
- 1:51then we'd be in business.
- 1:53I never saw such disorganization in all my life.
- 1:55Go back to your studio!
- 1:56You know what?
- 1:57I'm not.
- 1:58I'm here to stay, so like it.
- 2:01KELLY: I don't.
- 2:02Neither does anybody else.
- 2:05Now let's talk about this week's competition.
- 2:09We are going to what?
- 2:11Starpower!
- 2:14It's at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, and it's a resort.
- 2:18It's all self-contained.
- 2:20We can't forget anything.
- 2:21So we will have a wardrobe for each day
- 2:23that they are going to be there, just like the old school days.
- 2:27Yes?
- 2:28And you will park here, in front of me,
- 2:29so that I know that you have everything.
- 2:32Let's talk about the board.
- 2:33First of all, everybody worked together as a team.
- 2:37That teamwork is going to help you at Nationals.
- 2:40That's what's going to put you over the top--
- 2:42teamwork and technique.
- 2:43Those are the two things that we're going to concentrate
- 2:46on this week.
- 2:47Moms, we're doing another new number!
- 2:51[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 2:53One more costume!
- 2:55This week's group number is entitled "Make You Mine."
- 2:58It's a theatrical jazz routine.
- 3:00It's upbeat, it's fun, classic jazz.
- 3:03This week, I'm going to ask you to work harder than you've ever
- 3:06worked before.
- 3:07We need to show up and walk in there like we own the place.
- 3:10And I will give you a pack list for clothes for the trip,
- 3:13and I want them dressed a certain way every single day
- 3:16that we are there.
- 3:17Does everyone understand that Yes?
- 3:19Moms, thank you very much.
- 3:21Ladies, let's get up.
- 3:23Let's go.
- 3:25Push through.
- 3:25Tighten your abs.
- 3:27Stronger arm.
- 3:27Stronger arm.
- 3:28Stronger arm.
- 3:30Passé.
- 3:31MELISSA: Vivi and Mackenzie were still
- 3:32on the bottom of the board.
- 3:33Yeah, I-- I didn't like that, at all.
- 3:35Because they were in the team that won.
- 3:36MELISSA: I-- I--
- 3:38CATHY: Regardless of what they did, they contributed.
- 3:39CHRISTI: Oh, I didn't even think about.
- 3:40CATHY: And I thought that that was really stinky.
- 3:43MELISSA: They should have put the babies on the top.
- 3:44That's right.
- 3:45MELISSA: I mean, not the babies, but--
- 3:45It should have been--
- 3:47I mean, it's like, god, don't ever give anybody just
- 3:47a little inch.
- 3:48That's why Mackenzie doesn't want to dance anymore.
- 3:50She's like, it's always all about all the other girls
- 3:52and, you know--
- 3:53Your ribs are open. Derriere is out.
- 3:55Tighten it.
- 3:56Tighten it, no squishy.
- 3:57CATHY: And I just hope that you guys are prepared
- 4:00with a costume, and that you guys stop sharing costumes.
- 4:04Because, yeah, there is so much of teamwork,
- 4:06but it's ridiculous when you're looking at a six-year-old
- 4:09and you're 13, to cram into her costume.
- 4:12No offense to you because you were only
- 4:14doing what she told you to do.
- 4:17But I paid for the costumes and I didn't like it.
- 4:20So I think that, for now, it's over and done with
- 4:23and we need to move forward
- 4:24KELLY: Cathy was acting like a bitch.
- 4:26And she was way out of line whenever she came up to me
- 4:28three numbers before Brooke went on stage
- 4:30and took her costume off of her body.
- 4:31But my advice, as a dance teacher,
- 4:33you moms need to step up and make sure that she's on top
- 4:36of things with your costumes.
- 4:38CHRISTI: Vivi's very young and you're new,
- 4:43so you're kind of still in the honeymoon period.
- 4:44So she may not take it out-- but give her-- give her some time.
- 4:47Then she'll start taking out her frustrations
- 4:49on you on your daughter.
- 4:50Well, all I'm going to do is flash her
- 4:52a couple of dead presidents.
- 4:53Hopefully, that'll work.
- 4:55That'll settle her.
- 4:57That'll settle her down right now, some dead presidents.
- 5:00MELISSA: That'll help her.
- 5:01HOLLY: That might work.
- 5:03[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 5:04ABBY: All right.
- 5:05Now, remember, you're an angel.
- 5:06So you need to be pretty and beautiful with beautiful feet,
- 5:09not Fred Flintstone flat feet.
- 5:11Got it?
- 5:13Maddie is doing a breathtakingly gorgeous lyrical routine.
- 5:17It's entitled "Angel," and she wears a stunning white costume.
- 5:21[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 5:27(SINGING) You are the sky, the moon at night.
- 5:32You are my life, a shining light.
- 5:36These things, I've learned, are never ending.
- 5:42MADDIE: I'm doing this dance called "Angel"
- 5:44for my grandmother, Babcia, and I hope that she is proud.
- 5:47And I know that she is watching me from heaven.
- 5:53You know that song "Angel" is for my mom?
- 5:55CHRISTI: I know.
- 5:55Maddie was telling me.
- 5:57She's so excited about it.
- 5:59My mom was diagnosed with cancer when I was really young.
- 6:02And my mom meant the world to me.
- 6:04Her and I were close, just like Maddie and I are.
- 6:09The other day, I was a little freaked out because,
- 6:11like, I smelled her.
- 6:12And it was like--
- 6:13it was so weird.
- 6:14You know, I look at a picture every day when I get my coffee,
- 6:17and you now, I have her little handwriting on my cabinet,
- 6:20you know?
- 6:21And I-- I don't know.
- 6:22I just miss her so much, I can't stand it.
- 6:24CHRISTI: Like, you think, like, I want to pick up the phone
- 6:26and call them. And you're like--
- 6:27I still do it.
- 6:28I sometimes say, oh, I have to tell my mom about this.
- 6:29You know?
- 6:30And then I'm like, she's not there.
- 6:33KELLY: I can't imagine not having a parent.
- 6:35Oh, I mean, I have nobody.
- 6:41When I look at Maddie I see my mom.
- 6:42Because my mom had the blue eyes that Maddie has.
- 6:45And I always say to her, my mom gave me you.
- 6:49When she left me, she gave me you.
- 6:59[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 7:00Chug, chug, chug, chug, and you're moving forward
- 7:03a little bit.
- 7:03But more hips-- big.
- 7:05Nia is doing a character piece entitled "LaQuifa."
- 7:10It's sassy, it's snap and hip head pop.
- 7:14Go.
- 7:17See how you're, like, going to fall when you finish?
- 7:19I don't want to see that.
- 7:20Do it again.
- 7:21Push!
- 7:23Staggering again.
- 7:24Come on.
- 7:25Nia is African-American, and I'm trying to teach
- 7:28her different ethnic dances.
- 7:31And I'm trying to train her so that when she is in New York
- 7:34or LA and the casting call says ethnic,
- 7:37she can do all of the dances correctly.
- 7:39Your abdominal muscles, engage them.
- 7:43Now march in your own circle, nose up in the air.
- 7:45Go.
- 7:46One, two, three, four.
- 7:49You're going to swing this down, five, and fan kick big,
- 7:53forced arch flex, seven and eight.
- 7:56Good.
- 7:57Before I start another solo and before I start yelling
- 8:01about your feet and your legs being sloppy,
- 8:04this is the difference between winning and overall.
- 8:06This is the difference between winning a title right here--
- 8:09the technique.
- 8:11Explain that word to me.
- 8:13Um--
- 8:15We use it all the time.
- 8:17What does technique mean?
- 8:25You really don't know?
- 8:26And how many times have you heard it in dance?
- 8:29A thousand times.
- 8:31If you were reading a book and they used the word a thousand
- 8:34times and you didn't understand it,
- 8:35wouldn't you go look up the word?
- 8:36Yeah.
- 8:38Abby pushes me really hard, but I don't mind because it makes
- 8:41me a better dancer.
- 8:43Go ahead out on the floor.
- 8:45Let me see your best jump.
- 8:48MELISSA: I know you're teaching until 7:30,
- 8:50but I just wanted to warn you that Dawn Check is here
- 8:52to talk to you.
- 8:54She should be here to pay her bill.
- 8:56She's going to speak to you, so--
- 8:58ABBY: OK.
- 8:58I'll be out in a few minutes.
- 9:00MELISSA: OK.
- 9:02Minister Dawn-- she has a lot of nerve showing up at my dance
- 9:05studio after which she pulled the last time she was there.
- 9:08I mean, I can't believe that she has the gall
- 9:09to show her face after the police hauled her out of here.
- 9:13Every week, we put the trash out.
- 9:15Go!
- 9:16Then take yourself out!
- 9:17Because you're the biggest piece of trash there is!
- 9:20May I have your phone?
- 9:21Call the police!
- 9:23Go for it!
- 9:25I'm sorry, girls.
- 9:26DAWN: Go for it!
- 9:27There's a psycho in every batch.
- 9:28A psycho? Yes!
- 9:29Her name's Abigail Miller!
- 9:31ABBY: Hi.
- 9:32I need police.
- 9:33[SIREN BLARING]
- 9:34POLICE OFFICER: They just want you to leave the property, so--
- 9:44This time, I'm prepared.
- 9:45I have 911 on speed dial.
- 9:54[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 9:56ABBY: --seven and eight.
- 9:57MELISSA: I know your teaching until 7:30,
- 9:59but I just wanted to warn you that Dawn Check is here
- 10:02to talk to you.
- 10:03She should be here to pay her bill.
- 10:05Go somewhere else!
- 10:06Take your money, take your kid, take your socks,
- 10:09another school! I am--
- 10:10Why are you right?
- 10:11It's my building!
- 10:12My name's on the front of it!
- 10:13So what!
- 10:14[SCREAMS] Quit chasing me!
- 10:16- Go for it! - Hi.
- 10:17I need police.
- 10:18I have an-- a parent that's out of control.
- 10:21Have a seat.
- 10:23I just thought it would be better if we spoke in person.
- 10:25ABBY: I am busy, busy, busy, busy.
- 10:27OK.
- 10:28You never paid for the rest of your solo.
- 10:30I didn't think you would come in.
- 10:31Yeah, I'm not going to do that.
- 10:33OK.
- 10:34Well, it needs to be paid.
- 10:35This is your contract.
- 10:37DAWN: I understand.
- 10:37This is-- this is--
- 10:38But the contract was-- was broken.
- 10:40No.
- 10:42When you throw me out and tell me to get out
- 10:44and not come back-- - No.
- 10:45--that makes it broken.
- 10:46No, it doesn't.
- 10:47You broke the contract.
- 10:48I don't owe you anything.
- 10:50I'll see you in court.
- 10:51Believe me, Dawn, I've done it before.
- 10:53And you're going to have the court costs,
- 10:55you're going to have my time in there--
- 10:57Unless I win.
- 10:58And then-- then what happens?
- 11:00How would you win?
- 11:01Your daughter wore a costume, took a picture in it,
- 11:04and you're claiming that you don't need to pay for it?
- 11:07That's called fact by deception.
- 11:09You can use all the words you want to use.
- 11:11I will.
- 11:12- But it's a breach of contract. - OK.
- 11:14It's time for you to go.
- 11:15Well, all right.
- 11:16Have a nice day.
- 11:19That Minister Dawn needs a Bible refresher course.
- 11:22Thou shall not lie, thou shall not steal,
- 11:25and thou shall not disrespect Abby.
- 11:27[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 11:29OK, ladies.
- 11:31This is your pack list for the competition.
- 11:33Now, I didn't get into too much detail,
- 11:35since you guys go away all the time.
- 11:37When we go to a competition, everyone involved
- 11:39is representing me, Abby Lee Miller.
- 11:42So I want my girls to look professional,
- 11:45and I want the moms to look professional, too.
- 11:47Cathy, the reason we do this is so it's easy for me
- 11:51to find the kids.
- 11:52When I'm traveling with children and I
- 11:54need to get them quickly--
- 11:55I want to take a photo, somebody shows up
- 11:57and then they all look good for my program book.
- 11:59CATHY: I'm all about themes, but these little themed outfits are
- 12:02just for the children and not--
- 12:04ABBY: Oh, no, no, no, no.
- 12:05They're for everyone attending.
- 12:09Hold the phone for just a moment.
- 12:10Because we've already went shopping
- 12:13and we've bought some fabulous clothes.
- 12:15And I'm seeing here black and white night time,
- 12:18and I'm going to assume that you're talking about banquets.
- 12:20And I have a fabulous fuchsia formal that I'm going to be
- 12:24wearing, and she has green.
- 12:28I'm sorry I can't follow Abby's rules.
- 12:30When Candy Apples steps out, we do it in style.
- 12:33We don't dress like the help.
- 12:35You do remember that I am not a team player.
- 12:38And we will be packing at home.
- 12:42And what we pack is what we're bringing.
- 12:45This may not be totally conducive--
- 12:47Do not make your child an outcast.
- 12:49Oh, we would love for Vivi to blend.
- 12:51ABBY: Yes.
- 12:52But the reason why we're here is to stand out.
- 12:54I'd like to say that I'm smarter than the average bear.
- 12:56And I like to pull the rug out from underneath them
- 12:58and take their focus away from what's going on, so that I get
- 13:00in my way.
- 13:01All right.
- 13:02Everybody understands, yes?
- 13:04Mothers, I have your word? Cathy?
- 13:06Oh, well, I'll have to think about it.
- 13:15[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 13:18CATHY: Vivi.
- 13:19VIVI-ANNE: Hm?
- 13:20You know what I found out?
- 13:21At Starpower they have a costume award.
- 13:25VIVI-ANNE: Cool.
- 13:26And you have to put your photo in.
- 13:28So I think that we're going to enter your pink costume.
- 13:32At Starpower they have a photogenic award.
- 13:35I would love for Vivi to be able to have the opportunity
- 13:38to model in a costume book because that's
- 13:40what I did when I was little.
- 13:41And it was a great experience, very exciting.
- 13:44And I think it would be wonderful to know
- 13:46that her picture was going all over the country.
- 13:48You know what else, too, Vivi?
- 13:50Hm?
- 13:51CATHY: There will probably be a lot of photographers there.
- 13:53OK.
- 13:54CATHY: It'll be like you're the glamour girl.
- 13:55Uh-huh. CATHY: OK?
- 13:56That'd be fun.
- 13:58Maybe Mommy can get in a couple of shots.
- 13:59VIVI-ANNE: Yeah.
- 14:00My mom wants me to be famous.
- 14:03I don't want to be a model.
- 14:09[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 14:13ABBY: All right, girls, the new number
- 14:15that we're going to do for this competition is called
- 14:18"Make You Mine."
- 14:19Everybody say that.
- 14:20Make you mine.
- 14:22I want you to go out, and I want you to get the older
- 14:24girls' black chairs.
- 14:25This week's group number is entitled "Make You Mine."
- 14:29And we use the chairs because the kids have done a Fosse
- 14:32number and they were familiar with working on the chairs.
- 14:34It's high energy, and the kids love the number.
- 14:37They get to dance like teenagers, so they love it.
- 14:39(SINGING) Slip my lace on, put on my make-up.
- 14:43One, two, three, four--
- 14:47jeté.
- 14:47Roll.
- 14:52Turn that foot out, Nia!
- 14:54Arms, up straight!
- 14:58One, two, arms, Nia!
- 15:00Three-- where are those arms?
- 15:03Last night at dinner with your dad--
- 15:04that's where the arms are.
- 15:06(SINGING) I'm your fantasy girl.
- 15:10It's so frustrating to watch Nia dance.
- 15:12She makes the same mistakes over and over again.
- 15:17Pop up!
- 15:18I want it strong!
- 15:19This is the third time in 20 minutes I'm telling you
- 15:22the same thing.
- 15:24I don't know what I'm going to do about Nia.
- 15:25If she doesn't step it up, she's going
- 15:27to blow it for the rest of the girls in the group.
- 15:29You're the last one.
- 15:31And it was 100%, 100%, 100%, 100%, 50%.
- 15:37One more time, do it.
- 15:39One, two, three, four, five.
- 15:42It's still not sharp enough.
- 15:43It has to come up.
- 15:45Watch it when the next group does it.
- 15:46Ready? Let's go.
- 15:47(SINGING) So we can get it on, I'm going to make you mine.
- 15:55I try to do everything right, but sometimes it's too hard.
- 15:59Five, six, seven, eight and a one, two, three--
- 16:06[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 16:09I have costumes!
- 16:11[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 16:12Oh, girls, look at that!
- 16:14Woo-hoo!
- 16:15All right, Nia, you're going to put this on first, sweetie.
- 16:18The costume is darling.
- 16:20It's really, like, a satire on the drag queen image.
- 16:24And it's over the top, and it's fun, fun, fun.
- 16:26And it's right up Nia's alley.
- 16:28Then, put the pants and the crop top and everything
- 16:31else on, after that.
- 16:33I loved my costume for LaQuifa.
- 16:35I thought it was amazing.
- 16:36[LAUGHS]
- 16:37Chloe, this is you.
- 16:38Again, it's not what I drew.
- 16:40I should have sent the fabric.
- 16:42Hello. Sorry.
- 16:43Hi.
- 16:44HOLLY: Hi.
- 16:45I arrived just in time for costumes,
- 16:46and it's always interesting to see what Abby will pull out
- 16:49of her bag of tricks.
- 16:50Girls!
- 16:51Brooke!
- 16:52Oh, we're not too bad. KELLY: Oh, my gosh.
- 16:54You're a lot bigger than we think!
- 16:55CHRISTI: OK. I know it's-- oh, my god, Nia!
- 16:57HOLLY: You know what?
- 16:58Let me--
- 16:59[LAUGHTER]
- 17:00MELISSA: Was it hard to get in?
- 17:01HOLLY: Why is my daughter the only one
- 17:03dressed in animal print?
- 17:05Is this a joke?
- 17:07ABBY: Can you walk down there, sweetie, and let me see you?
- 17:10HOLLY: All the other girls get feminine, beautiful,
- 17:12whimsical costumes that aren't typecasting them.
- 17:16And, you know what?
- 17:17I want her in an Afro.
- 17:19Do you have one from when we did "My Hair Looks Fierce?"
- 17:22Let me just pull it out of my purse.
- 17:24No, I don't have a Afro!
- 17:25[LAUGHS]
- 17:26If not, Penn Hill Shopping Center.
- 17:33Are you kidding me?
- 17:34No, I don't have an Afro.
- 17:36That's not the black experience that we know.
- 17:39And there's nothing wrong with LaQuifa--
- 17:41the LaQuifas of the world.
- 17:43But that's not Nia's experience.
- 17:45It is not my experience.
- 17:46My name is Holly.
- 17:48I'm as far away from LaQuifa as you can get.
- 17:51That is not who I am and that is not who Nia is.
- 17:56ABBY: Turn around.
- 17:58Holly wants her daughter to be like every other little girl.
- 18:00Nia has an advantage over everybody else.
- 18:03She can play many different ethnicities.
- 18:06And it's my job to make her capitalize those opportunities.
- 18:10Different is good.
- 18:11She has what it takes, and yet her mom wants
- 18:15her to be like Paige and Maddie and Chloe.
- 18:17This is show business.
- 18:19When they're looking for somebody different,
- 18:21they're going to love Nia.
- 18:23I think these could go a little higher.
- 18:30[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 18:33I can't take all the late night.
- 18:39I never drink.
- 18:40But after having to buy an Afro and seeing that Leopard
- 18:43costume, I about had it.
- 18:45What I took objection to was just about the whole LaQuifa
- 18:48number.
- 18:49I never have denied my Black heritage.
- 18:51I'm very proud of it.
- 18:52But it has to--
- 18:53I don't want to be a stereotypical from the '70s--
- 18:54- And I agree with that. - --wearing an Afro.
- 18:56We're in the 21st century.
- 18:58KELLY: I think Holly's being a little overdramatic.
- 19:00Her daughter's wearing an Afro wig.
- 19:02What's the big deal?
- 19:03She's going to have her picking cotton.
- 19:05Might as well, or a scarf on her head and being Aunt Jemima.
- 19:08I don't want that.
- 19:09Did you just say picking cotton?
- 19:10HOLLY: Well, that's what it's like.
- 19:12[LAUGHTER] It's the same type of thing.
- 19:12Swing low sweet chariot, and just
- 19:14let's pick some cotton or something.
- 19:15KELLY: It doesn't-- like--
- 19:16We have worked so hard to get beyond that.
- 19:17KELLY: I agree with you.
- 19:18HOLLY: For me, it's very political.
- 19:20Politics is all about who has to power and who has the control.
- 19:23I don't have the power to choose Nia's music.
- 19:25Abby gets to choose that.
- 19:27And Abby has the control and the power in depicting
- 19:29how she wants Nia portrayed.
- 19:31I'm definitely frustrated.
- 19:32I'm at the end of my rope.
- 19:33I don't know if I'm going to be able to hang in there much
- 19:36longer.
- 19:40[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 19:46ABBY: Bus driver, how come you came this way?
- 19:49You're throwing everybody around back here.
- 19:51We're heading to the Starpower competition in Connecticut.
- 19:55And this is going to be tough.
- 19:57The judges are going to be looking for technique,
- 19:59of course, showmanship, costuming, and passion.
- 20:04So when the dancers step out there,
- 20:06they're truly passionate about their craft
- 20:08and what they're doing.
- 20:09Mackenzie!
- 20:11Here!
- 20:12Maddie!
- 20:13Here!
- 20:14ABBY: Cathy is too good for us.
- 20:16She gets to ride in the Mercedes while we're on the bus?
- 20:19Who does she think she is?
- 20:21We all know it's a C Class.
- 20:25[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 20:27The woman at the wig shop thought I was crazy,
- 20:29getting an Afro for 10-year-old girl.
- 20:32Oh, you ended up getting one?
- 20:33I found one.
- 20:34CHRISTI: Is it blonde?
- 20:35[LAUGHTER]
- 20:37HOLLY: That would have been-- that would have been good.
- 20:38There are lots of wigs I would like to choose from for Nia.
- 20:41I would never select an Afro wig.
- 20:43I would like for Nia to be beautiful
- 20:46and not stereotyped as someone with an Afro from the '70s.
- 20:51[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 21:06I thought you liked Gummy Worms!
- 21:08[LAUGHTER]
- 21:11Getting sleep on a bus with a bunch of kids
- 21:14just doesn't work.
- 21:17[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 21:20[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 21:23CHRISTI: So here we are at Starpower,
- 21:24and this is the big competition for us.
- 21:26Our girls need to do really well.
- 21:28[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 21:32ABBY: Moms, they're running 30 minutes ahead.
- 21:35So get the makeup on as quickly as possible
- 21:38so that we have time to run this number.
- 21:39That's more important. MELISSA: Maddie, how's that--
- 21:41how's it feel?
- 21:42Does it feel good?
- 21:43MELISSA: Do you have to go to the bathroom?
- 21:45Maddie has to go to-- - No, I don't.
- 21:46MELISSA: You have-- no.
- 21:47Maddie, listen to me.
- 21:48You have to cooperate with me.
- 21:51We had 30 minutes to get our kids ready.
- 21:54They had to be stretched.
- 21:55We had to put French twists in their hair, fake eyelashes, all
- 21:58their makeup.
- 21:58It was crazy.
- 22:01Maddie, you have one number to dance and that's it.
- 22:04You're going to deal with it.
- 22:05Be a grownup.
- 22:08I'm sick of this attitude.
- 22:10I can't deal with Maddie's attitude.
- 22:12She's eight years old and sometimes she thinks she's 16.
- 22:15Maddie, you need earrings first.
- 22:18No.
- 22:19Maddie, calm down, please.
- 22:21I'm a perfectionist.
- 22:22I don't like to be rushed when I'm doing my makeup and hair.
- 22:26MELISSA: Guess what?
- 22:26Do you want to go home?
- 22:28You're never like this.
- 22:29Stop it.
- 22:30KELLY: Melissa's always freaking out on Maddie
- 22:32before the competitions.
- 22:33I feel bad for Maddie.
- 22:35ABBY: Maddie, go do some turns and see if that hair moves,
- 22:37please.
- 22:40What was that about?
- 22:41What was that?
- 22:42Melissa is always on time, always prepared, always where
- 22:45she needs to be.
- 22:46And when that doesn't happen exactly as she planned,
- 22:50then she gets worked up.
- 22:51And that, in turn, works up her daughters.
- 22:53Girls-- sh, stop.
- 22:55There are 1,500 numbers.
- 22:59OK?
- 23:00You're the first thing you're going to see from Abby Lee
- 23:02Miller.
- 23:02Do you understand how important it is?
- 23:03Be respectful backstage.
- 23:05When you come off the stage, I don't care if it
- 23:07was good, bad or otherwise.
- 23:09You act like it was the best time you ever danced.
- 23:11Do you understand me?
- 23:12This is what we have been working for all season.
- 23:14Today is what matters, right now in 10 minutes.
- 23:16Do you understand?
- 23:19[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 23:30MELISSA: Every single competition
- 23:31is really important to us because each competition is
- 23:35one step closer to Nationals.
- 23:36[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 23:38ANNOUNCER: Please help me welcome "Make You Mine,"
- 23:41number 128.
- 23:42[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 23:45(SINGING) Slip my lace on, put on my make-up,
- 23:50slide stiletto shoes on to get my groove on.
- 23:54Put the Chanel on with a little lip
- 23:58gloss to knock your socks off so we can get it on.
- 24:02I'm going to make you mine.
- 24:06I'm going to make you mine.
- 24:08Make you feel good.
- 24:10I'll be your fantasy.
- 24:17ABBY: Nia missed a big glissade.
- 24:19I corrected her over and over, and she still did it wrong.
- 24:23No excuses.
- 24:24(SINGING) Make you feel good.
- 24:27I'll be your fantasy.
- 24:37I'm your fantasy girl.
- 24:42[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 24:44HOLLY: During the "Make You Mine" performance,
- 24:46Nia was a little off.
- 24:48I just hope Abby's not too hard on her.
- 24:50[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 25:13MELISSA: Maddie is really upset right now.
- 25:15The group just performed and she doesn't
- 25:17feel that they performed to the best of their ability.
- 25:21ABBY: Girls, I'm talking to you right now because I'm
- 25:24disappointed.
- 25:26Now, why were you crying?
- 25:29ABBY: You got hurt a little?
- 25:31What happened?
- 25:34ABBY: OK.
- 25:35MELISSA: Maddie was upset because Nia did not do well.
- 25:39But she told Abby she was upset because she twisted her ankle.
- 25:42ABBY: Nobody knows the dance.
- 25:44MELISSA: She has to go to the bathroom.
- 25:50Did that say registration?
- 25:51Yeah.
- 25:53I'm inquiring about the photogenic award.
- 25:56I entered Vivi in a photogenic contest.
- 25:59We haven't had the opportunity to do the costume catalog thing
- 26:02yet.
- 26:03Now I got a mess going on, here.
- 26:05I thought that this would be a good start to maybe start
- 26:07to pursue something like that.
- 26:09Incline your head.
- 26:10OK. - You're going to have--
- 26:11All right.
- 26:12I won't touch you, then.
- 26:13I feel like the eyelashes are drooping.
- 26:15Do I need to staple your eyebrows up?
- 26:19Don't look scared.
- 26:20Don't-- don't look like somebody is goosing you.
- 26:22I'm feeling like you're a-- a bum model.
- 26:25Come on, look alive.
- 26:27Look at me and smile.
- 26:28Big smile-- big, big, big!
- 26:30Get it.
- 26:31Click!
- 26:32Smile!
- 26:35Ugh!
- 26:36You're just going to look over your shoulder?
- 26:37She should have her hands down.
- 26:38PHOTOGRAPHER: Look at me and smile.
- 26:40OK? CATHY: OK that's cute.
- 26:41Don't change your face.
- 26:42Freeze your face.
- 26:44You look like a pug.
- 26:48Oh, now she's running the show.
- 26:50[LAUGHS]
- 26:51CATHY: I went in with the attitude
- 26:53that I was going to do all of the posing for Vivi-Anne,
- 26:55and Vivi just took off.
- 26:56She just went off on her own.
- 26:57Big smile.
- 27:01I was amazed because she really started to perform
- 27:04and she was doing cute little poses
- 27:06and she was coming up with ideas all on her own.
- 27:08Whatever you want to do, honey.
- 27:09Just do whatever you feel like.
- 27:11I've just been fired.
- 27:12PHOTOGRAPHER: [LAUGHS]
- 27:14[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 27:16Now let's give a [INAUDIBLE].
- 27:20ABBY: It's very important that the girls win for the group
- 27:23numbers.
- 27:24They win all the time for their solos.
- 27:26That's easy.
- 27:27It's much more difficult to do a group routine.
- 27:29Everybody has to be in sync, timing issues,
- 27:32spatial awareness, everybody on the same count
- 27:34at the same time.
- 27:36When your group wins, you've won.
- 27:41ANNOUNCER: Only 4/10 of a point separate first from third.
- 27:48Third place is "Gratitude," number 124.
- 27:52[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 27:53Your second place world champion today is "Make You Mine,"
- 28:01number 128.
- 28:02[APPLAUSE]
- 28:05Name your studio, and who's the choreographer.
- 28:08Abby Lee Dance Company.
- 28:10MELISSA: Our girls definitely deserved first place.
- 28:12We were totally shocked.
- 28:17[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 28:19Why? these don't hurt.
- 28:20No, I meant on the left.
- 28:22Let me see.
- 28:24I just want to tell you that Babcia would have been so proud
- 28:27of you.
- 28:28You know, her and I were close like you and I,
- 28:30except we didn't fight like you and I fight.
- 28:32[LAUGHS]
- 28:33Because you're too much of a perfectionist.
- 28:35But she meant so much to me.
- 28:37She was my best friend, like you and I are.
- 28:39That's why you remind me so much of her.
- 28:42She loved angels, you know?
- 28:43And when she died, I took her hat--
- 28:46you know the angels that we always put on?
- 28:48But this is the special-- most special angel.
- 28:50This was her favorite little angel, so let's pin it on you.
- 28:53OK?
- 28:55My mom wore this pin on her hat every day when she had cancer.
- 28:58And she would have loved to see my kids dance the way they
- 29:00dance.
- 29:02And giving this pin to my daughter means the world to me.
- 29:04Do you know, whenever you go on stage
- 29:06I always pray for her to be on stage with you.
- 29:09I totally believe that my mom is always with my daughter
- 29:13when she's on stage, always.
- 29:15Do really good today, OK?
- 29:16And think of her when you're on stage.
- 29:18She'll be there with you.
- 29:20I love me so much.
- 29:21I'm doing this dance, "Angel," for my grandmother, Babcia.
- 29:25And I hope she's proud, and I know that she's watching me
- 29:28from Heaven.
- 29:29[APPLAUSE]
- 29:32[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 29:35(SINGING) You are the sky, the moon at night.
- 29:40You are my life, a shining light.
- 29:45These things, I've learned, are never
- 29:48ending stories we will tell.
- 29:53You don't know by the song you sing--
- 29:57you don't know how much joy you bring.
- 30:02You are my angel, angel, asleep inside your halo, halo.
- 30:11I'm right beside you, and you know,
- 30:15you know how much you're loved.
- 30:18I know you forever will be mine.
- 30:21MELISSA: I never get tired of watching Maddie dance.
- 30:23She always brings tears to my eyes.
- 30:26(SINGING) I'm right beside you.
- 30:30And you know, you know how much you're loved.
- 30:34I know you forever will be my angel.
- 30:40Forever will be my angel.
- 30:51[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 30:58MELISSA: Maddie did her solo so wonderful today.
- 31:00I'm so proud of her, and Babcia would be proud of her, too.
- 31:04[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 31:14All right.
- 31:15My-- my thing's all--
- 31:16[LAUGHS] Look at my sewing!
- 31:21Look!
- 31:22It's, like, all--
- 31:24[LAUGHTER]
- 31:24Ah, it's because I'm rushed.
- 31:26HOLLY: Look.
- 31:26This actually for the style--
- 31:28'70s Party Afro.
- 31:30You should have seen the woman at the store,
- 31:32"Is that for you?"
- 31:33It's offensive that Abby asked me to go out and buy an Afro
- 31:37wig.
- 31:37Why is she asking me?
- 31:38I think it's very stereotypical.
- 31:40CATHY: Why she's always depicting this Afro-American
- 31:45looking thing that--
- 31:45I know. CATHY: Yeah.
- 31:46And Nia's more than just that.
- 31:48CATHY: And why-- why the wig?
- 31:49Nia's solos have appeared to be going
- 31:52in a particular direction.
- 31:54The solo that she's now doing, she's got an Afro wig on
- 31:57and she's portraying Latifah, LaQuifa, somebody.
- 32:02And I just-- I feel bad.
- 32:04There's so many cute things that she could do, you know?
- 32:07HOLLY: I know.
- 32:08CATHY: It's almost starting to be not politically correct.
- 32:11Holly is a little hysterical over this, I think.
- 32:13I think that this is starting to really play and wear on Holly.
- 32:17Don't you let that affect you.
- 32:18Because you know what?
- 32:20You are going to go ahead and just smash it.
- 32:22Right. See?
- 32:23See?
- 32:23You're going to kill it.
- 32:25You could be one of my dancers.
- 32:27KELLY: I think Nia does get typed with her numbers,
- 32:29but everybody does.
- 32:31Brooke has done an acrobatic routine
- 32:33since she was six years old.
- 32:34She's never been given anything else.
- 32:36And there's many other things Brooke could do.
- 32:38Like, Brooke could do a lyrical number,
- 32:40but Abby just doesn't give it to her
- 32:41because she's typed as an acro.
- 32:43[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 32:45HOLLY: I felt I was put an awful situation.
- 32:47I don't want to pull her from a dance.
- 32:49She's worked hard.
- 32:50She deserves to be in that dance.
- 32:52At the same time, I don't feel comfortable with her being
- 32:54on stage dressed that way.
- 33:03[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 33:03[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 33:05ABBY: All of the girls are either doing a solo or a duet
- 33:07here at Starpower this week.
- 33:08So they need to make sure the technique is in check,
- 33:11the legs are straight, the feet are pointed,
- 33:13and they bring their own personality to the routine.
- 33:16ANNOUNCER: If you will please put your hands together
- 33:18[INAUDIBLE].
- 33:20(SINGING) Summer seems to go so fast.
- 33:23I guess the good times never last.
- 33:26(SINGING) Beautiful, dangerous, on a parallel universe.
- 33:33Earth shattering, it's a curse--
- 33:37(SINGING) Listen, baby, I'm going
- 33:39to put you on my hot list-- my gotta get,
- 33:42gotta, gotta, gotta get this.
- 33:44(SINGING) Ooh, I love you the same as before.
- 33:51[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 33:55[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 33:59JUDGE: Let's go onto number three, Vivi-Anne.
- 34:02CATHY: I entered Vivi in the Miss Photogenic contest,
- 34:04and we took some fabulous pictures.
- 34:07I just hope that those judges know what they're doing,
- 34:09and that they pick the right girl and it's Vivi, of course.
- 34:12It's too much like she's on stage instead of just taking
- 34:15a photo of her beauty. - Right.
- 34:16It's cute. No, it's cute.
- 34:17It is cute, but she's about to go into musical theater.
- 34:19I absolutely think she's got on some, like, stage makeup.
- 34:21- Yes, she does. - Yeah.
- 34:22It's totally about to go on.
- 34:23And I think that's, like, reinforced eyebrows
- 34:25and eyelashes, as a matter of fact.
- 34:28And it's kind of blurry.
- 34:29Yeah.
- 34:30It's actually not the most--
- 34:31best quality picture, either.
- 34:33She's got a costume on.
- 34:34Unless, of course.
- 34:35She wears sequins on a daily basis, which I do--
- 34:37- And it's no centered. - --but that's OK.
- 34:39I know you do.
- 34:39Yes.
- 34:40- It's not centered. - And not good lighting.
- 34:42- Not a good photo. - No.
- 34:43OK, this is a no?
- 34:44Yeah, not today.
- 34:44OK, great.
- 34:45Moving on--
- 34:46[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 34:57ANNOUNCER: For the title of Petite Miss, here
- 35:00at the Mohegan Sun, Maddie.
- 35:08[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 35:11Congratulations to you, Maddie.
- 35:15MELISSA: Maddie has six crowns now,
- 35:16and her goal is to make it to the double digits.
- 35:19Oh, my god, Maddie!
- 35:20ABBY: Woo!
- 35:21MELISSA: [LAUGHS] Congratulations!
- 35:29[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 35:31We're going to sit and look at these.
- 35:33OK?
- 35:33Oh, man.
- 35:34Ugh.
- 35:35Where's what the cute poses that you were doing?
- 35:38The photogenic award was nestled in between all
- 35:42of the other awards.
- 35:44I have no idea how many kids were in the contest.
- 35:47They did give three places out, and Vivi was not awarded
- 35:51any of those three places.
- 35:52I'm going to tell you what.
- 35:54That photographer-- no wonder he's working at competitions.
- 35:56Because he's no professional.
- 35:59You-- you don't even look like you're smiling.
- 36:01I should have had red lipstick on you.
- 36:02The photographer was a goof.
- 36:04Despite how bad he was, the judges
- 36:06should have seen the potential in Vivi.
- 36:09These are horrendous.
- 36:11I mean, no, you're beautiful.
- 36:14But these pictures--
- 36:16I don't understand what the guy was doing.
- 36:18[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 36:25ABBY: Nia is doing a character piece entitled "LaQuifa."
- 36:29I need Nia to know the ethnic dances.
- 36:33Those dances come from a heritage,
- 36:36and they have to be done correctly.
- 36:43"They Call Me LaQuifa."
- 36:49HOLLY: I'm really apprehensive about this dance.
- 36:51I don't like the song.
- 36:52I don't like the costume.
- 36:53I don't like the theme.
- 36:55Come on.
- 36:55It's called "LaQuifa."
- 36:59ANNOUNCER: "They Call Me LaQuifa."
- 37:03[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 37:07(SINGING) They call me LaQuifa, with a postmodern pim-- what?
- 37:10They call me LaQuifa with a postmodern pim-- what?
- 37:14LaQuifa!
- 37:15What? LaQuifa!
- 37:16What?
- 37:17What?
- 37:18LaQuifa!
- 37:18What? LaQuifa!
- 37:19What?
- 37:20What?
- 37:21I said, what?
- 37:22I said, what?
- 37:23I said-- I-- I--
- 37:24I said, what?
- 37:25I said, what?
- 37:26I said, what?
- 37:27Baby, they call-- baby they call--
- 37:29What? What?
- 37:30What? What?
- 37:31What? What?
- 37:32What? What?
- 37:33What?
- 37:34Work the Hallelu-- work the Hallelu-- work the Hallelu--
- 37:37work the-- work the-- work the Hallelu-- work the Hallelu--
- 37:40work the Hallelu-- work the--
- 37:42[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]
- 37:45HOLLY: It was very disappointing.
- 37:47I came to see a dance and I saw my daughter walking
- 37:49across the stage, beautifully.
- 37:51It was entertaining, but it was not dancing.
- 37:54[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 37:55ABBY: Oh, ugh.
- 37:57HOLLY: Can I talk to you for a moment?
- 37:59- Sure. - Maybe outside.
- 37:59Sure.
- 38:00HOLLY: I have held my tongue long enough,
- 38:03and I'm tired of this.
- 38:04It is time for me to be direct and have a heart-to-heart
- 38:07with Abby now.
- 38:09It's still really unnerving for me that she's wearing a wig.
- 38:13It's 2011 and she's wearing a '70s Afro wig.
- 38:16It's the whole idea it's an Afro,
- 38:18it just seems so stereotypical.
- 38:19It is stereotypical, absolutely.
- 38:23I just feel like she's the token black kid.
- 38:25I wouldn't use the word token.
- 38:27I would use the word affluent and special and--
- 38:31It doesn't come across that way.
- 38:33Asmeret is not going to school for four years for free
- 38:36on the Martin Luther King Scholarship
- 38:37because she's white.
- 38:38If I send her to an audition, it's
- 38:41going to be an ethnic call.
- 38:43Nobody else is going to get to go but her.
- 38:46When they want to hire an African-American kid,
- 38:48they hire an African-American kid.
- 38:50But when I'm thinking of--
- 38:51I'm looking at Nia.
- 38:52All of her routines, it seems, is like, a jungle theme.
- 38:55There's a Satan theme.
- 38:57It like, there's a little undertone, a nuance that
- 39:00is like, a little bit of a negativity,
- 39:01that I would just like something that's a little bit more
- 39:03celebratory.
- 39:05Well, then you pick the music and you hire the choreographer
- 39:08and she can do the number.
- 39:11Abby, we don't have to go there.
- 39:12All I'm trying to do-- - Well, we-- you're going there.
- 39:14HOLLY: No, I'm not. - We don't have a problem.
- 39:16HOLLY: Abby--
- 39:17What I'm giving her works for her movements,
- 39:17for what she does well.
- 39:19She doesn't have good feet.
- 39:20She doesn't have great turnout.
- 39:21She doesn't straighten her knees.
- 39:23She's sway back.
- 39:24I'm telling you very nicely, pick the music,
- 39:26pick the choreographer-- - Abby, come on.
- 39:28That's not fair.
- 39:29Nobody-- but not one kid pays me $30 grand a year.
- 39:32And if you do, I will be a lot nicer and I'll sit down
- 39:35and we can have a big conference about it.
- 39:37Well, you know what?
- 39:38But for $250 bucks a month, go somewhere else.
- 39:40That's the way it is.
- 39:41First of all, I don't pay $250 a month.
- 39:42That's the first thing. - To me, you do.
- 39:44No, I don't.
- 39:45Look how I dress. Look where I live.
- 39:46Look what I pay.
- 39:48I pay what-- almost $100,000 a year in private school tuition
- 39:51and you're telling me I can't afford you?
- 39:53I did not say that. I said--
- 39:54Pretty much, you did.
- 39:55No, I did not.
- 39:56And you have my kid dress up in an Afro?
- 39:59Let's not go there.
- 40:00ABBY: I did not say that.
- 40:01I am Ivy League educated and my husband is.
- 40:03I said that if every customer paid me--
- 40:04We have a lot of capitol.
- 40:05--$30,000 a year--
- 40:06OK.
- 40:07--that I would be glad to sit down and have a conversation
- 40:09with you.
- 40:11Think closely about your-- think closely about your words.
- 40:13ABBY: Holly comes from a world of books.
- 40:15She doesn't come from my world.
- 40:16I am trying to give her daughter more opportunities.
- 40:19Nia could go in for any ethnic role and nail it,
- 40:23but she needs to have the dance background.
- 40:25And Holly keeps fighting it on me.
- 40:27But I'm telling you this with all sincerity.
- 40:29There's a lot of teachers out there.
- 40:31If you're not happy, look through the Yellow Pages.
- 40:33HOLLY: I am fed up with Abby.
- 40:35Abby needs to learn that my daughter's a dancer first,
- 40:38she's not ethnicity first.
