- 0:04ABBY LEE: We are going to--
- 0:06Starpower!
- 0:07Maddie, you have one number to dance and that's it.
- 0:09You're going to deal with it.
- 0:11Be a grownup.
- 0:13ABBY LEE (VOICEOVER) Nia missed a big glissade.
- 0:15I corrected her over and over, and she still did it wrong.
- 0:17I want her in Afro.
- 0:19Do you have one?
- 0:20Oh, just like she's the token Black kid.
- 0:22I did not say that.
- 0:23But for $250 bucks a month, go somewhere else.
- 0:25Think closely about your words.
- 0:27ABBY LEE (VOICEOVER): Coming up on "Dance Moms"--
- 0:29Well, here we are at Starpower in Orlando.
- 0:32Where's Cathy?
- 0:34Where's Vivi-Anne?
- 0:35We're-- we're getting off the party train.
- 0:37Well, you're a quitter.
- 0:40Hi!
- 0:42We heard so much about you.
- 0:44Good luck.
- 0:46[theme music]
- 0:49THEME SONG: Get up.
- 0:51Get on the floor.
- 0:52My world is with my girls, living on the dance floor.
- 0:58[music playing]
- 1:03ABBY LEE: This week we're starting on the road.
- 1:05We have a long road before we get to nationals.
- 1:10Here we are, at Starpower in Orlando.
- 1:12It's, like, their toughest competition.
- 1:14These people do not mess around.
- 1:16I'm so glad to be at a dance studio.
- 1:19You have no idea.
- 1:20Girls, let's go!
- 1:22Come on!
- 1:23All right.
- 1:24Where's Cathy?
- 1:26Where's Vivi-Anne?
- 1:28MELISSA: Don't know.
- 1:29ABBY LEE: The first thing I noticed--
- 1:30no Cathy, No Vivi-Anne, no show.
- 1:32Right now I am at the end of my rope with Cathy.
- 1:35KELLY: It doesn't surprise me at all that Cathy's not here
- 1:37for assignments.
- 1:38You know, she picks and chooses what she wants to come to.
- 1:41Mackenzie, now, you and Vivi-Anne are supposed to have
- 1:45a duet, but no Vivi.
- 1:48So you might be doing "Summer" by yourself.
- 1:52Chloe, you're going to take a week off.
- 1:55I'm not going to do a new solo for you.
- 1:57I think you need to work on your technique.
- 1:59CHLOE: I would have been OK if Miss Abby would have picked
- 2:01another week for me to work on technical stuff.
- 2:04But I don't think it was really that fair,
- 2:06because I was the only one.
- 2:07And this was, like, kind of a big week.
- 2:10I was happy with fourth place.
- 2:12Your mother was not.
- 2:14And I don't think you were, either.
- 2:16CHRISTI: I'm shocked that Chloe's on the bottom.
- 2:17I thought Chloe was fabulous.
- 2:19Abby needs to remember that she has a problem with me,
- 2:21she needs to take it up with me and not
- 2:23punish my nine-year-old.
- 2:24ABBY LEE: Nia--
- 2:27After Nia performed "Laquifa" in Connecticut,
- 2:29I am not surprised at all that she's in the bottom row.
- 2:32Actually, I think it's a good thing that the judges did not
- 2:35find "Laquifa" to be exceptional.
- 2:37I think kudos to them.
- 2:39I was happy with you.
- 2:40Your mother is not happy with the choreography,
- 2:43so we're going to work on that.
- 2:44Mom, I don't want any more altercations like Connecticut.
- 2:49It was a conversation.
- 2:50I don't want any more conversations like Connecticut.
- 2:53HOLLY: An altercation-- I think of it as being something that's
- 2:56really threatening.
- 2:57And my conversation, just calling her
- 3:00on issues of accountability, is not anything of an altercation.
- 3:04It's a conversation.
- 3:06ABBY LEE: Maddie, you won.
- 3:08It was great.
- 3:09Costume was gorgeous.
- 3:10Everything clicked.
- 3:12I just don't want to see tears.
- 3:14You're at the top of the age scale.
- 3:15You did a beautiful job.
- 3:17You did the title.
- 3:18This is your year.
- 3:19Maddie has been on this winning streak,
- 3:20and she just wins everywhere we go.
- 3:23So, hopefully, she can repeat her performance
- 3:26from Connecticut and win another title here.
- 3:28Let's talk about the group number for this week's
- 3:30competition.
- 3:31The number is called "Snapshot."
- 3:33You're all models.
- 3:35So who's modeled before?
- 3:36You've all modeled.
- 3:37Perfect.
- 3:38So, now, you know what the runway is.
- 3:40What else is at a fashion show?
- 3:43A photographer.
- 3:44I've got a lot to think about over the last 24 hours,
- 3:47and I think we need to bring a boy in to be the photographer.
- 3:50What do you think?
- 3:51Brooke?
- 3:52Yes.
- 3:53[laughs]
- 3:55I have a surprise for all of you, a big surprise.
- 4:01Here's our photographer.
- 4:02[suspenseful music]
- 4:08It's Brandon!
- 4:10He looks so weird!
- 4:12[laughter]
- 4:13Brandon and I used to like each other a couple of years
- 4:16ago, but it never really went anywhere.
- 4:18Is he here?
- 4:19[music playing]
- 4:20Brandon!
- 4:21No!
- 4:22ABBY LEE: Diane?
- 4:23[cheering]
- 4:28I brought Brandon in because he's a good looking guy.
- 4:31He's very masculine on stage, which all of my boys are.
- 4:34I pride myself on that.
- 4:36And he's getting to the point where
- 4:37he's old enough and strong enough to do overhead lifts.
- 4:40Hi, Diane.
- 4:41Come stand in the line.
- 4:43My name is Diane.
- 4:44Brandon has been one of Abby's best answers for years.
- 4:47Abby told me she needed a boy to spice up one of her numbers,
- 4:49and that's why we're here.
- 4:50[chatter]
- 4:52KELLY: Brandon and Brooke got paired up as duet partners.
- 4:55They used to do great together, and then they started
- 4:57liking each other and dating.
- 5:00Once they started dating, they lost that connection
- 5:03in their dancing.
- 5:04Because I think they were, like, embarrassed of each other.
- 5:06Brooke, Brandon, you used to have a duet.
- 5:08[laughter]
- 5:12Well, guess what?
- 5:13You're going to be doing some partner work.
- 5:15Brandon, you're not used to this pace that we've been on.
- 5:18You have four days to pull this number together.
- 5:21It's not about laying in the sun.
- 5:22It's not about riding a ride.
- 5:24It's about the dancing.
- 5:25Everybody, five minutes to warm up and then choreography.
- 5:29Let's go.
- 5:30[camera shutter clicking]
- 5:31[music playing]
- 5:34ABBY LEE: Chin up high when you face upstage.
- 5:38CHRISTI: Welcome to our world.
- 5:40And home away from home.
- 5:42Oh, god.
- 5:43I cannot believe we're in Orlando and I'm sitting in a--
- 5:46I know.
- 5:47--damn dance studio.
- 5:48[music playing]
- 5:49ABBY LEE: I'd rather her do a tumble flat grand jeté instead
- 5:51of the trick.
- 5:53"Snapshot" is our number.
- 5:55It's about models and a photographer,
- 5:57and the relationship grows from there.
- 6:01I felt that the chemistry between Brooke and Brandon
- 6:03would be good.
- 6:05I think they used to have a little fling at the studio.
- 6:08All right, Holly, it wasn't an altercation.
- 6:11It was a conversation.
- 6:12Oh, you're too funny.
- 6:13It wasn't.
- 6:14I'm just sick and tired of her always making something
- 6:17more dramatic than what it is.
- 6:18It was a conversation.
- 6:19I'm not a person that has altercations with people.
- 6:21CHRISTI: Wait.
- 6:22I got to tell you--
- 6:24Pointing foot's turned in, Nia.
- 6:29Stay on that outside, Brooke.
- 6:31Chloe, when you arch back, square your shoulders off even.
- 6:34And then she's making Chloe feel bad like, oh, no solo
- 6:36for you this week.
- 6:37We have to work on your technique.
- 6:38I was happy with fourth place, but your mother wasn't.
- 6:40HOLLY: I know.
- 6:41I never said that.
- 6:44I can't stand it.
- 6:45I can't stand it.
- 6:46I'm sitting around with these moms
- 6:47and I'm thinking, what the hell did I get myself into.
- 6:49The surest way that you will be at the bottom of the pyramid
- 6:51is if you speak up for anything about your child.
- 6:53CHRISTI: Yeah.
- 6:54HOLLY: You will go to the bottom.
- 6:55Like, Chloe didn't deserve to be
- 6:56at the bottom of the pyramid.
- 6:56MELISSA: No, not at all.
- 6:57GIANNA: In a line. In a line.
- 6:58It's ahead, straight ahead. GIANNA: In a line.
- 7:00ABBY LEE: That was nothing.
- 7:00That was silly.
- 7:01Passé, get that leg up.
- 7:03Sloppy arms.
- 7:04You two aren't even looking at each other.
- 7:06Come on!
- 7:07I wonder if she's nice.
- 7:08They better connect.
- 7:09Brooke and Brandon are acting really weird during the group
- 7:11number, doing their partnering.
- 7:13I think, personally, that they both still like each other.
- 7:16That's why they're acting that way.
- 7:17Brandon, when I say the word I want chemistry between you,
- 7:20what does that mean?
- 7:21I mean, you have to have, like,
- 7:22emotion between each other and just the passion
- 7:25that you would feel something.
- 7:26Right.
- 7:27Like, this girl makes your heart stop.
- 7:30Yes.
- 7:31What does it mean to you?
- 7:33ABBY LEE: [laughs]
- 7:35She's talking about Brandon and Brooke
- 7:36having the chemistry.
- 7:37I don't know if you have that much chemistry.
- 7:39No.
- 7:41And how are we going to get that in four days?
- 7:42You're getting older.
- 7:44You need to step up to the plate and bring the performance.
- 7:46She's said you're getting older, step up to the plate.
- 7:48Well, 13 isn't old enough to have that kind of chemistry.
- 7:52Now do the arch back.
- 7:55And look back at him, and slide slowly down.
- 8:00Ooh, lovely.
- 8:01[laughs] I think some of the moves in "Snapshot"
- 8:04were a little risque.
- 8:05I mean, I felt like I was watching "Dirty Dancing."
- 8:07Both of you need to use your stomachs and engage.
- 8:09Go.
- 8:10Watching Brooke and Brandon in rehearsal
- 8:12is like waiting for paste to get sticky.
- 8:14Chaine out.
- 8:15There's nothing happening, nothing.
- 8:18Kelly, Diane, come down here for a minute.
- 8:20I need to talk to you.
- 8:21Ha, ha!
- 8:23You guys take five.
- 8:25Brooke, Brandon, come on over here.
- 8:27Kelly, Diane!
- 8:28We're coming! ABBY LEE: I need to see you.
- 8:29Come on down!
- 8:30We have to walk there.
- 8:32Brooke, you and Brandon are carrying this number.
- 8:37So I need chemistry.
- 8:38I need something.
- 8:40And, if you two wouldn't mind, I'm gonna send 'em on a date.
- 8:44Oh.
- 8:45[laughs]
- 8:47But you two need to butt out of it.
- 8:49Don't get a table for four.
- 8:50Get a table for two and another table for two you.
- 8:53You let them do their own thing.
- 8:54Brandon and I never even really dated.
- 8:57We just liked each other and hung out all the time.
- 9:01I've never even really been on a real date before.
- 9:05[music playing]
- 9:09ABBY LEE: Holly, come on down!
- 9:10I told you I wanted you to come in on the private.
- 9:12Here I am.
- 9:14Come on in.
- 9:14Have a seat right here.
- 9:16HOLLY: After I requested that dance be put into the routine,
- 9:19Abby made it very clear that I had
- 9:21to be a part of that rehearsal.
- 9:23ABBY LEE: Do it again.
- 9:25Soutenu.
- 9:26Don't-- don't rush.
- 9:27Plié.
- 9:28Use your stomach.
- 9:29Do you see how she bobbles all over the place?
- 9:31She doesn't engage her abdominals.
- 9:32I made Holly come in and watch the rehearsal,
- 9:35because she does not have a clue that that kid cannot correct
- 9:42herself.
- 9:43Got it?
- 9:43You're on, kid.
- 9:45[music playing]
- 9:49[non-english singing]
- 9:54Face.
- 9:57Elbows lifted.
- 9:58HOLLY: I love it when Nia has an opportunity to demonstrate
- 10:00her talents individually.
- 10:02I'm not sure, however, that I would have picked
- 10:05another ethnic dance for Nia.
- 10:06This leg has to be over your head.
- 10:09Stretch this foot.
- 10:11Ooh, stretch it.
- 10:13HOLLY: I think Abby is definitely making a statement.
- 10:15I think she's setting Nia up for failure, to be quite honest,
- 10:17because I asked for it.
- 10:18I demanded it.
- 10:19Go!
- 10:20HOLLY: And Abby's going to give it back to me
- 10:22tenfold, by putting Nia in a situation where she is almost
- 10:26at the impossible level of being able to pull off
- 10:30a dance of that magnitude.
- 10:32ABBY LEE: No?
- 10:32Is that hard?
- 10:33Yeah.
- 10:34ABBY LEE: Hmm.
- 10:35I just don't understand with parents
- 10:38why these bombs don't get that I want everyone to win.
- 10:44[music playing]
- 10:47ABBY LEE (VOICEOVER): It's been two days since anyone's
- 10:49heard from Cathy.
- 10:51In all my years of teaching dance,
- 10:53I have never had a dancer not show up.
- 10:56CATHY (ON PHONE): Hello? - Hello, Cathy.
- 10:57This is Abby.
- 10:58Do you think you could come to my room?
- 11:00CATHY (ON PHONE): Sure.
- 11:03[knock on door]
- 11:06Come on.
- 11:08Is this my last rites before execution?
- 11:10Yes.
- 11:11I've had it.
- 11:13If you don't want to be part of the team,
- 11:15don't be part of the team.
- 11:16That's ridiculous, Abby, because--
- 11:17- No, it's not. - --stuff happens.
- 11:19You flew all the way here and I'm pulling that duet.
- 11:22End of story.
- 11:29If you don't want to be part of the team,
- 11:32don't be part of the team.
- 11:33You flew all the way here and I'm pulling that duet.
- 11:34End of story.
- 11:35That's ridiculous, Abby, because--
- 11:36No, it's not.
- 11:37--stuff happens.
- 11:38CATHY: I have a lot going on back home.
- 11:40I was preparing my students for a competition
- 11:42that they're going to, and at that particular moment
- 11:45they were my top priority.
- 11:47So you're going to hurt Mackenzie then.
- 11:49You're hurting Mackenzie.
- 11:51I didn't hurt Mackenzie.
- 11:52I was there.
- 11:53I had music, I had costumes, I was prepared.
- 11:55But you're making--
- 11:56You didn't show up.
- 11:57But you are making the ultimate decision.
- 11:59I have to set an example for the rest of the team.
- 12:01If it's OK for you not to show up to the meeting,
- 12:04then it's OK for everybody not show for the meeting.
- 12:07CATHY: Abby is not happy with me and she
- 12:10wants to set an example of me.
- 12:13She wants to make sure that the other moms are seeing what
- 12:17happens if you defy the great Abby.
- 12:21ABBY LEE: Well--
- 12:22It's a big mistake.
- 12:23You're not a team player.
- 12:24Well, then I'm not a team player.
- 12:26[music playing]
- 12:31KELLY: Abby told Brooke and Brandon
- 12:32that they had to go and make a connection.
- 12:34So Diane and I took Brandon and Brooke to the Fun Spot.
- 12:37[music playing]
- 12:40BROOKE: I haven't seen Brandon in a while,
- 12:41and now we're on a date.
- 12:43And it's really weird.
- 12:44That looks fun.
- 12:46DIANE: Would you ride that?
- 12:47Will I ride that?
- 12:48Yeah.
- 12:49I'll ride that.
- 12:51How about we meet you in an hour?
- 12:52I think Brandon wanted to spend some time alone,
- 12:56so he told our parents to go.
- 12:57Oh, my god!
- 12:59[screams]
- 13:04Was that fun?
- 13:06Yeah.
- 13:07Well, that means I can drive you around when
- 13:08I get my license, right?
- 13:10I won't try to crash like I did in that.
- 13:11I'll die.
- 13:12[laughs]
- 13:13So I can't believe you're here.
- 13:15- I know. - I'm so excited!
- 13:16I know.
- 13:17I missed you.
- 13:18It's been weird.
- 13:19It's just dance.
- 13:19That's all that matters, dance.
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:22But if you're at the dance studio, you're with Christi.
- 13:24If you're going somewhere, you're with Christi.
- 13:28Kelly has been my best friend for a long time,
- 13:30and it's been difficult because she's hanging out with Abby
- 13:34and these crazy dance moms all the time.
- 13:36So I don't see her very often anymore.
- 13:39I'm home every day.
- 13:41You know what, Kelly?
- 13:42I call.
- 13:43You don't answer.
- 13:44You know, it's just easier for me to stay away from there.
- 13:46I just stay away.
- 13:48You know, Chloe is in Paige's age category, so like,
- 13:51our classes are always at the same time.
- 13:53And--
- 14:01What do you think about Abby sending us here?
- 14:03She's weird.
- 14:05I mean, but you can understand where she's coming from,
- 14:07though. Right?
- 14:08No.
- 14:09BROOKE: If Brandon thinks anything's
- 14:10going to happen between us on this date, he's crazy.
- 14:14All she wants us to do is just have, like she was saying,
- 14:17chemistry or whatever.
- 14:23Yeah.
- 14:24I do.
- 14:25Hopefully, they can connect doing their duet.
- 14:28Oh, my god.
- 14:29I still think they like each other.
- 14:36Miss Abby told me and Brooke that we have to go and build
- 14:39chemistry.
- 14:40But, hey, we're doing the best we can.
- 14:43What do you think happened?
- 14:44I don't know.
- 14:45Can't we talk about something else?
- 14:47Like, look how high that roller coaster is.
- 14:48See? Look.
- 14:49Look. Look.
- 14:50Look.
- 14:52I think Brandon likes me, but I've moved on.
- 14:55I'm not really the same person I was when I was nine years old.
- 14:58Let's go ride a ride or find our moms.
- 15:01Whatever.
- 15:02Go find our mamas.
- 15:03[music playing]
- 15:10This week my is "Universe."
- 15:12Each week I compete, it gives me another chance
- 15:15to win another title.
- 15:16[music playing]
- 15:24Sometimes I feel a little pressure,
- 15:26but I'm a perfectionist.
- 15:28My mom always tells me that, and she
- 15:31said I keep trying until I win.
- 15:34And that's what I've been doing for a long time.
- 15:40My dream is to continue dancing forever.
- 15:43I want to be a professional dancer on Broadway.
- 15:46There's nothing else I ever do except for dance.
- 15:50[music playing]
- 15:55HOLLY: When we're on the road, away from Abby's studio,
- 15:58we have to rehearse any time and any place.
- 16:02Holly, are you working again?
- 16:04Well, actually, I'm not doing work-work.
- 16:06I'm trying to help Nia.
- 16:08I'm writing things down on this notebook--
- 16:10[laughs]
- 16:11HOLLY: --my official notebook of Abby's corrections.
- 16:12Your dance notebook.
- 16:13My dance notebook.
- 16:14When I signed up for dance, I expected a dance teacher
- 16:16to do this.
- 16:18But, since a dance teacher is not doing it, I have to step in
- 16:21and I have to give her whatever I can give as an educator
- 16:26to help her.
- 16:27I'm so out of my element.
- 16:28This is not what I'm used to doing.
- 16:30So my soutenu plié is written down here somewhere.
- 16:33[laughs] It's like you're speaking Chinese over there.
- 16:37Legs should be together.
- 16:42This week I'm not Dr. Holly, I'm not Principal Holly,
- 16:45I'm Dance Mom Holly.
- 16:47You're in Holly's Boot Camp.
- 16:48You're funny, Holly.
- 16:52[music playing]
- 16:55ABBY LEE: We're here at Starpower
- 16:57in sunny, muggy, hot Orlando, and they have a pageant.
- 17:01Every one of you have been registered.
- 17:03We don't know who's going to qualify.
- 17:05So right now we're all going to rehearse as if you made it.
- 17:08And then whoever makes it will be ready.
- 17:10Brooke, stand up.
- 17:11Go ahead upstage.
- 17:13Look at her walk.
- 17:14Look at her walk.
- 17:15Eh!
- 17:16I'm going to show her.
- 17:19Turn, catch that end judge.
- 17:22[giggles]
- 17:24Abby doesn't look like a model to me.
- 17:27Mackenzie, tell me your favorite acrobatic trick.
- 17:30[blows whistle] Look down.
- 17:32Nia, tell us the heritage of your name.
- 17:37May I please ask you what that word means?
- 17:43ABBY LEE: I don't think any of my students
- 17:44are great at the whole pageant thing.
- 17:46We spent so much time on technique,
- 17:49that I never really get a lot of time
- 17:52to do the interview skills.
- 17:54If you get up on stage and you freeze or you stutter,
- 17:58you're going to look like an idiot in front
- 18:00of all those people.
- 18:01The most important thing is that you do not panic.
- 18:06Pull your thoughts together, take a deep breath,
- 18:09and answer the question.
- 18:10Does everyone understand?
- 18:11[blows whistle] We are adjourned.
- 18:14Go find your mothers and start working on this interview.
- 18:17[music playing]
- 18:27MELISSA: I've been trying to get a hold of Cathy for two days
- 18:30now.
- 18:31I really want to know where she and Vivi are.
- 18:34[music playing]
- 18:38Hello.
- 18:39[music playing]
- 18:48So what's been going on?
- 18:59[music playing]
- 19:00Hello.
- 19:01So what's been going on?
- 19:03So Abby pulled the duet because you
- 19:05didn't come to chalkboard and you weren't at rehearsals.
- 19:08And Mackenzie was so upset.
- 19:11Well, I'm sorry for Mackenzie, but I missed my flight.
- 19:15And we're doing the same choreography,
- 19:17so I don't think it's a big deal.
- 19:18But wasn't that two days ago--
- 19:20Yeah.
- 19:20--that you missed your flight?
- 19:21CATHY: So when was chalkboard?
- 19:22Two days ago? - Two days ago.
- 19:24So where have you been the last two days?
- 19:25I don't think it's a big deal.
- 19:26I missed my flight.
- 19:28Two days ago!
- 19:30I think it is a big deal because we always
- 19:31have to be there. - You know what?
- 19:32It's the same choreography over and over and over,
- 19:34so I am over it.
- 19:37And it doesn't affect you guys.
- 19:39KELLY: But it does affect us. - It does affect us.
- 19:40KELLY: 'Cause we're a group.
- 19:41'Cause we have to show up, regardless.
- 19:42But you're not in the duet. Right?
- 19:44You're not in the duet.
- 19:45Here we go again as a group.
- 19:46OK, you guys are not in the duet.
- 19:49It's between Melissa and I. And if Melissa and I
- 19:51have to discuss it with Abby, then we will.
- 19:53But you know what? CATHY: I understand this whole--
- 19:54We're in this room and it's a team.
- 19:55Yeah. But you're not in--
- 19:56HOLLY: You don't get to dictate what--
- 19:57We were here the last two days,
- 19:59Mackenzie being upset because she didn't get to do a duet.
- 20:01OK.
- 20:02Then maybe you guys should have donned your tights
- 20:03and got on stage with her.
- 20:04Because I get so sick and tired of hearing you guys--
- 20:07it's a team. It's a group.
- 20:08It's a team.
- 20:09It's a group.
- 20:10Yet, Vivi is not really in any of your numbers.
- 20:13And I don't classify sitting on a swing being
- 20:16in part of your numbers.
- 20:17So I'm not on your team.
- 20:20I'm not your friend.
- 20:20Why are you even yakking?
- 20:22That dance won twice over all, both times we did it.
- 20:24CATHY: You know what? MELISSA: At nationals.
- 20:26And the only reason your daughter was on the swing
- 20:27was because she couldn't do with the other kids were doing.
- 20:29Well, she's also six years old, Kelly.
- 20:31Well, you said she isn't in our dances.
- 20:32We put her in.
- 20:33Why am I even arguing with you?
- 20:35I don't care what you have to say.
- 20:36OK. HOLLY: I have a comment.
- 20:37Then if you don't care what I have to say--
- 20:38HOLLY: I don't care what you have to say.
- 20:39Then you need to be quiet.
- 20:40Because this has nothing to do with you.
- 20:41No one tells me what to do, Cathy.
- 20:43You may as well stick your hand up her butt
- 20:45and beat her ventriloquist.
- 20:47Well, then do something about it.
- 20:51I'm frustrated for Melissa, because she is not sticking up
- 20:53for herself.
- 20:54I don't believe in being a doormat.
- 20:55It's frustrating to see other people be doormats.
- 20:58But if Melissa wants to be a doormat
- 21:00and have people walk all over her, so be it.
- 21:02I am done.
- 21:03Even though Abby pulled a duet and the duet didn't dance,
- 21:08I'm here right now to support your teams.
- 21:12That's all that matters.
- 21:13Come on, Vivi, let's go.
- 21:14Thank you very much, Cathy.
- 21:15MELISSA: Right? - I'm here for the awards.
- 21:17HOLLY: Thank you.
- 21:18KELLY: Oh, yay.
- 21:18Don't bother next time.
- 21:19HOLLY: Your presence is noted.
- 21:20Thank you.
- 21:23[music playing]
- 21:27ABBY LEE: I love Florida, so I bought a house in Orlando.
- 21:30Come on in!
- 21:32Hello!
- 21:33I had the kids and the moms come on out
- 21:35to my house to enjoy a day at the pool and have lunch.
- 21:38My mom, the one and only Maryen Lorrain, is home.
- 21:42Hey.
- 21:44ABBY LEE: My mom is a gracious lady to everybody
- 21:49in the world but me.
- 21:51Grab a plate on that end.
- 21:53Go through the line.
- 21:54Take your food.
- 21:55[music playing]
- 21:59I understand that Cathy's busy, but like, you invite someone
- 22:04to your house, she could at least call me and tell me
- 22:06she wasn't coming.
- 22:07Who's going in?
- 22:08[screaming]
- 22:11I have no idea how to make a martini.
- 22:13Oh, just pour some in there.
- 22:14[music playing]
- 22:21Ah!
- 22:22I love the big watermelon game.
- 22:23KELLY: You got the biggest watermelon you could find.
- 22:25CHRISTI: Oh, my! - OK.
- 22:26Just go.
- 22:27ABBY LEE: You put grease all over the watermelon
- 22:29and you throw them in the pool.
- 22:31[screams]
- 22:33ABBY LEE: The goal of the game is to grab the watermelon
- 22:35and get out of the pool with the watermelon in your hands.
- 22:38They fight like cats and dogs trying to hold on,
- 22:40and it keeps slipping out.
- 22:42Come on!
- 22:43[excited chatter]
- 22:45Come on, girls!
- 22:46Pull it!
- 22:47CHRISTI: It's amazing.
- 22:48We go to Abby's house, and the kids aren't allowed to be kids.
- 22:50It has to be turned into a competition.
- 22:52ABBY LEE: Get it! Get it!
- 22:53Get it! Get it!
- 22:54HOLLY: Now the watermelon just hit her there.
- 22:56MELISSA: Maddie got it.
- 22:56ABBY LEE: Run!
- 22:57Run! CHRISTI: Ew.
- 22:58[laughs]
- 22:59HOLLY: That looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
- 23:01Where do I go?
- 23:02ABBY LEE: You got to get up the steps without holding it.
- 23:04HOLLY: Why don't you just all walk up together?
- 23:05MELISSA: She's fine.
- 23:06Just leave her alone.
- 23:07HOLLY: All of a sudden, Maddie starts to cry.
- 23:11And she says that she was somehow injured.
- 23:14But, from my vantage point, I'm looking at the game.
- 23:17Maddie was not kicked.
- 23:18What happened?
- 23:19Tell me.
- 23:22OK, then stay away from it because it's ridiculous.
- 23:24You're a girl.
- 23:25You're not a boy.
- 23:26MELISSA: Nia's pretty rough, but Maddie does not
- 23:29like getting rough at all.
- 23:31[excited chatter]
- 23:32ABBY LEE: Winner!
- 23:33MELISSA: Come on.
- 23:35It's all swollen.
- 23:38Maddie cried because she didn't win.
- 23:40She didn't win the stupid watermelon game.
- 23:42Somebody else got three seconds of glory in front of four moms.
- 23:47MELISSA: We're freaking girls, not boys.
- 23:49HOLLY: The child was not injured.
- 23:51Melissa needs to get a better balance on how
- 23:54to deal with these situations.
- 23:58[music playing]
- 24:02GIANNA: Shoulders down.
- 24:03Too tense.
- 24:05MELISSA: We're really excited that there's
- 24:06more competition in Orlando, especially for Maddie.
- 24:09Because it's going to challenge her a little bit.
- 24:11And, you know, she's very competitive,
- 24:13but she likes when there's a challenge.
- 24:16GIANNA: Up and over.
- 24:17Hold.
- 24:18MELISSA: While Maddie was rehearsing,
- 24:20there was a little girl practicing as well,
- 24:22about 10 feet away from her.
- 24:23Her name is Juliana and we've seen her at other competitions
- 24:27a lot of people think that Juliana
- 24:29is Maddie's big competition.
- 24:30Don't get me wrong.
- 24:32She's a sweet girl and a great little dancer,
- 24:33but Maddie has no competition.
- 24:35GIANNA: Do you want to grab a drink
- 24:36and go get your costume and everything?
- 24:38Sure.
- 24:39GIANNA: OK.
- 24:40Let's go get a drink.
- 24:42Juliana is probably the toughest competitor here.
- 24:46And I think she's a really good dancer.
- 24:48But I think I have a good chance of beating her.
- 24:51[music playing]
- 24:55MELISSA: Hold on Do you want to meet her?
- 24:56Just go up to her.
- 24:58Hi.
- 25:00We've heard so much about you.
- 25:01Hi.
- 25:02I'm Melissa.
- 25:03So you're tiny like my Maddie.
- 25:05Are you a good tumbler?
- 25:06Yes.
- 25:07MELISSA: Well, Mackenzie is a good tumbler too.
- 25:12And does it really matter who wins or does it really
- 25:14matter who has fun?
- 25:15That's right.
- 25:17What's the answer?
- 25:20I don't care if I don't win.
- 25:21MELISSA: Good luck.
- 25:22It was so nice meeting you.
- 25:24Nice to meet you, too. Good luck.
- 25:25Oh, thank you.
- 25:26Good luck to you, honey. - Thank you.
- 25:27Maddie, good luck,
- 25:28Maddie.
- 25:35[music playing]
- 25:38[applause]
- 25:39ABBY LEE: Maddie was the only one
- 25:40who qualified for the pageant.
- 25:42I would expect nothing less from her.
- 25:44[applause]
- 25:48MADDIE: Today I'm doing my solo for the pageant.
- 25:51And I'm kind of nervous because my rival, Juliana, is also
- 25:55competing against me.
- 25:57[music playing]
- 26:02(SINGING) There's a secret hiding in my hear.
- 26:06Don't know where it ends or where it starts.
- 26:10Though I haven't any clue, and there's nothing I can do,
- 26:18'cause I'm so in love with you.
- 26:25[cheering and applause]
- 26:29MELISSA: Normally we don't have a titled pageant
- 26:32at any competition that we've ever gone to.
- 26:34This is something new that we've seen here,
- 26:36and it was kind of exciting.
- 26:38[applause]
- 26:39ANNOUNCER: And now please welcome back,
- 26:42performing to "Listener."
- 26:43[music playing]
- 27:07[applause]
- 27:13I know that when I dance I'm a winner.
- 27:15And I don't let the competition get to me.
- 27:17But now it's the interview part in the pageant
- 27:21and I'm super nervous.
- 27:22You've been in the pageant for a long time.
- 27:25You know how to do this.
- 27:26Some of them have probably never spoken in front of judges
- 27:28before. Right?
- 27:29Mm-hmm.
- 27:30Just stop it.
- 27:32Hi.
- 27:33My name is Juliana.
- 27:34I'm from Saddle River, New Jersey.
- 27:36I'm so honored to be here tonight.
- 27:38I'd like to thank my mom for supporting me in all I do.
- 27:42Starpower, thank you so much for this opportunity.
- 27:44[cheering and applause]
- 27:54Good evening, ladies, gentlemen, and judges.
- 27:57My name is Maddie.
- 27:59I am eight years old, and I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- 28:02I hope you enjoyed my--
- 28:04eve-- my performance this evening.
- 28:08[suspenseful music]
- 28:12Thank you.
- 28:14[applause]
- 28:17She did good, didn't she?
- 28:19She walked gorgeous.
- 28:20Did she speak well?
- 28:21She did speak perfect.
- 28:23Aw!
- 28:25Juliana is a good speaker and she didn't mess up once.
- 28:28And I kind of mumbled once or twice.
- 28:31So I'm not sure if I'm going to win or not.
- 28:34Ladies and gentlemen, our first runner
- 28:36up with an outstanding score, Juliana.
- 28:40[cheering and applause]
- 28:41Ladies and gentleman, your winner tonight--
- 28:44Maddie!
- 28:45[cheering and applause]
- 28:47Maddie, congratulations to you.
- 28:48Good job.
- 28:50Who's your teacher?
- 28:51Abby Lee Miller.
- 28:52Congratulations.
- 28:53[cheering and applause]
- 29:01[music playing]
- 29:09ABBY LEE: Let's go.
- 29:10Come on.
- 29:11You ready, Nia?
- 29:12Brandon, Brooke, what's going on over there?
- 29:14You both look miserable.
- 29:16You should draw the judge's eyes over to you.
- 29:18That's the choreography.
- 29:19If they look over and see vanilla paste drying,
- 29:23they're not going to keep looking over.
- 29:24It's obvious that Brooke and Brandon are not
- 29:26having the connection.
- 29:27Abby's not happy about it, but she should have expected this.
- 29:31This is why we didn't do a duet last year.
- 29:35BRANDON: With the dance, I've been trying to connect
- 29:37with Brooke the whole week.
- 29:38But she's been pretty cold towards me.
- 29:41[music playing]
- 29:43GIANNA: We do the turns one time.
- 29:45Turn.
- 29:46Strong arms, Brooke.
- 29:47Your hands are so lazy.
- 29:50It's the only thing I'm worried about, when she's
- 29:51sliding down.
- 29:53You cut me.
- 29:54Shut up.
- 29:55You're fine.
- 29:56It's a belt.
- 29:58One, two, three--
- 29:59model it!
- 30:01[music playing]
- 30:02(SINGING) Shiny lipgloss photo shoot.
- 30:04Dress me up in peek-a-boo.
- 30:06I don't think so.
- 30:10Make pretend, twist and bend the camera lens.
- 30:13Come on, let's go.
- 30:16We'll Photoshop with air brush strokes.
- 30:19We'll join the dots with dirty jokes.
- 30:21We'll show what we've got.
- 30:25A shameless mannequin.
- 30:27Pink petals hide her sins.
- 30:30ABBY LEE: I'm watching "Snapshot."
- 30:31It was a mess.
- 30:33Brooke's legs were bent.
- 30:34Her feet weren't pointed.
- 30:35It was just the technique, you know?
- 30:37Hit or miss.
- 30:41Brooke and Brandon were supposed to be falling in love,
- 30:43and I thought they couldn't be any more disconnected.
- 30:47[cheering and applause]
- 30:55MELISSA: Good job!
- 30:56HOLLY: Oh, girls!
- 30:58You were so good.
- 30:59HOLLY: You were so good.
- 31:00Girls, come on.
- 31:01I want to get you in the dressing room
- 31:02and talk about this down there.
- 31:04Let's go.
- 31:05Brandon can't be with you till we get downstairs.
- 31:08No. We have to leave.
- 31:10We have to leave.
- 31:17The group number was a disaster.
- 31:19Brandon and I don't have time to stick around for this.
- 31:22I know Abby is going to be looking for a fall guy,
- 31:23and Brandon is going to be it.
- 31:28[cheering]
- 31:33Four place champion is number 679, from Stepping out.
- 31:38Second place champion is "Fly to Your Heart," Next Generation,
- 31:43number 645.
- 31:45Champion of today in our small division
- 31:48will be "About That Walk."
- 31:52[cheering and applause]
- 31:56[ominous music]
- 32:03ABBY LEE: "Snapshot" did not even place in the top 10,
- 32:06and that's unheard of for this group.
- 32:08This is like, the dream team.
- 32:11We are rehearsing Nia's solo.
- 32:14I want Nia to put her Bollywood costume on.
- 32:16Holly's always upset because Nia doesn't have enough time
- 32:19to learn things.
- 32:20Come on.
- 32:21I-- you know what?
- 32:22Let me just have her rehearse.
- 32:23Get over it, you know, man up.
- 32:24Get over it.
- 32:25Learn the number, go out there, sell it.
- 32:27And, you know, quit giving in to that.
- 32:29I just think that she's weaker instead of stronger.
- 32:33Are the feet flexed or pointed?
- 32:35See, you can't decide once you get there.
- 32:38Arms straighter!
- 32:40Bigger!
- 32:41Bigger!
- 32:41Bigger!
- 32:44Give me something!
- 32:45You're, like, at a funeral.
- 32:46Nia's name is screamed out constantly.
- 32:48ABBY LEE: Nia!
- 32:49Boom!
- 32:50Hip!
- 32:51It's in a nasty, barking way.
- 32:54It's really mean.
- 32:56ABBY LEE: Do it.
- 32:58Kick.
- 32:59See, this is-- this step--
- 33:00Yeah, but she's getting frustrated now.
- 33:02That kick-- kick, catch has been in every one
- 33:05of your dances.
- 33:06So that should be perfect.
- 33:08HOLLY: If you hear it one way, I think she's feeling it another
- 33:11way. 'Cause it's--
- 33:12Yeah.
- 33:13But, Holly, we're right back to the same thing.
- 33:14I don't need to be here doing this with her.
- 33:17Holly has to stop questioning my every move.
- 33:21It's always this little underlying dig,
- 33:24like Nia's not good enough.
- 33:26Nia's not tall enough.
- 33:28Nia's not skinny enough.
- 33:29Nia's not this enough.
- 33:30Get over it.
- 33:31Trust me.
- 33:33As a teacher, we give them the tools, we do our job.
- 33:36It's up to them to go out in the world and use them.
- 33:38I disagree with that.
- 33:39If I need to wipe her butt all the way there,
- 33:41that's ridiculous.
- 33:42It's vicious at times.
- 33:44And sometimes I don't think Abby realizes the way that she says
- 33:48things, and how hurtful her words are.
- 33:51And I'm not asking you to wipe her butt.
- 33:52I'm asking you to do your job.
- 33:53When you talk to Maddie and you're giving her corrections,
- 33:56you're not barking at her and yelling at her.
- 33:58Wrong!
- 33:59How many times did I tell you this?
- 33:59Time and time again.
- 34:00You never talk to her that way.
- 34:01Because I have to tell her once.
- 34:03I don't know what Holly's problem is this week.
- 34:05But she said to me, you're just barking orders at her.
- 34:09You're just barking at her, which
- 34:11was like calling me a dog, which I do not appreciate.
- 34:13Go out there, flex, point, do what you're supposed to do.
- 34:18And we'll see if the judges like it.
- 34:19Thank you.
- 34:24[music playing]
- 34:33What's wrong?
- 34:34It's OK.
- 34:46[music playing]
- 34:48When you talk to Maddie, you're not barking at her.
- 34:50'Cause I have to tell her once.
- 34:52What's wrong?
- 34:53It's OK.
- 34:55MELISSA: Deep breath.
- 34:56Come on.
- 34:57You're our rock, honey.
- 35:01CHRISTI: I've spent a lot of time with Holly.
- 35:03I have never seen her get emotional.
- 35:04She's a stone mountain, and she was crying her heart out.
- 35:07Because when it's your daughter it hurts.
- 35:11HOLLY: I was OK until I saw her sitting there and she's upset.
- 35:14I know.
- 35:16I never thought I would let dance get to me.
- 35:18I know.
- 35:19CHRISTI: I think Holly finally stepped back
- 35:21from that educator's stance and she became a mother.
- 35:24And she saw what I go through every week.
- 35:29All of a sudden it just hit me.
- 35:30Like, I have allowed it to get to this point.
- 35:33And I felt bad.
- 35:35Like, I feel so responsible.
- 35:36I know.
- 35:37But how many times do you apologize?
- 35:38I subjected her to this.
- 35:39I know.
- 35:40I subjected her to Abby.
- 35:41And Abby doesn't get it.
- 35:42I'm like-- [sighs]
- 35:43Wipe your tears.
- 35:44We can't go out there looking like this because we have
- 35:45to go out there and look intimidating.
- 35:48So that's why we have to be dressed up.
- 35:50Goodbye.
- 35:51HOLLY: [laughs]
- 35:52Bye, Nia.
- 35:55Bye, girls.
- 35:56CHRISTI: By, Hol.
- 35:57Bye.
- 35:58[music playing]
- 36:01OK.
- 36:01How you doing, OK?
- 36:03You know the dance?
- 36:04Mm-hmm.
- 36:06I love you.
- 36:07HOLLY: I'm feeling better right now
- 36:09after having a conversation with Christi for a little bit
- 36:12and checking in with Nia, who unfortunately was giving me
- 36:15the support I'm supposed to be giving her.
- 36:17So I felt bad about that.
- 36:19I'm supposed to be the person who's supposed to be her rock,
- 36:22and I fell apart.
- 36:24Let's go.
- 36:25Let's go.
- 36:30[music playing]
- 36:38ANNOUNCER: Please welcome to the stage Nia.
- 36:41[cheering and applause]
- 36:53HOLLY: I'm in the audience when Nia comes out.
- 36:55I'm thinking of all the corrections
- 36:56that she needs to made.
- 36:57She's either going to do the corrections
- 36:59and forget the routine or she's going to do the routine
- 37:02and not do the corrections.
- 37:03Her little head, her brain, can hold but so much information.
- 37:08[music playing]
- 37:19[non-english singing]
- 37:59[cheering and applause]
- 38:03She did a great job.
- 38:05She should be really proud of herself.
- 38:06I was happy with her.
- 38:07I was thrilled, actually.
- 38:12[ominous music]
- 38:15I think she might be next.
- 38:17ANNOUNCER: We have some special awards to give away.
- 38:20Here we go.
- 38:22Nine to 11 Full Floor.

- 38:49I knew you could do it.
- 38:51You're so awesome.
- 38:53So "Laquifa" didn't win, but Nia did.

- 39:08The Dream Team has been doing so well.
- 39:10Maddie is undefeated with her solos.
- 39:13So I have a little more news.
- 39:17I think your mothers are going to fall off their chairs.
- 39:19Oh, god.
- 39:20What?
- 39:21We're going from here to Vegas, to Los Angeles,
- 39:27California, and to Lake Tahoe.
- 39:30I'm not gonna fall off my chair.
- 39:32I'm gonna shoot myself.
- 39:33And you better be the overall high scorer.
- 39:36Do you understand?
- 39:37I don't think the moms are so excited.
- 39:39We're doing a world tour.
- 39:41It's ridiculous.
- 39:42No moms! No moms!
- 39:43KELLY: We'll hang at the pool while you have the kids.
- 39:44No moms!
- 39:45No moms! Come on.
- 39:46Help me out here.
- 39:47CATHY: This is not possible for us.
- 39:50We did not bargain for this kind of travel.
- 39:54I've got committed things happening at home for my dance
- 39:58studio, so it's not possible.
- 39:59We're not doing it.
- 40:00ABBY LEE: You don't look very happy.
- 40:01OK, well, we're not going to go to Las Vegas.
- 40:05OK.
- 40:07We're getting off the party train.
- 40:08We just are not going to be able to--
- 40:11to accommodate this.
- 40:12And there's nobody-- like, your mom can't just bring her
- 40:13or-- - No.
- 40:14No.
- 40:15And you know that Vivi's not going to go with anybody
- 40:16but me anyhow. So--
- 40:17I thought maybe your mom.
- 40:18Yeah.
- 40:19No, she's not going to do that.
- 40:21Just not gonna work for us.
- 40:23Hey, everyone's replaceable.
- 40:25You know that.
- 40:26Yep, even dance teachers.
- 40:29If I'm going to go on tour, I'm going
- 40:31to go on tour with my students who are winning platinums.
- 40:34I respect you as a teacher.
- 40:36I think you're wonderful.
- 40:37I'm not going to Vegas.
- 40:39Well, you're a quitter.
- 40:40Whatever.
- 40:44It's the people that you just bend over backwards for,
- 40:47you give the opportunity to, you don't stick to your rules,
- 40:50and this is how it turns out.
