- 0:00frostbite that night alone
- 0:03it was the worst night of the season to
- 0:05be out
- 0:07in the elements and that's when david
- 0:09sharp was dying
- 0:10the media reacted swiftly to the news
- 0:12that david sharp was left to die
- 0:14david sharp he ran into trouble on the
- 0:16mountain and
- 0:17he is passed by a number of climbers 40
- 0:20other climbers passed by
- 0:21mountaineer david sharp as he lay dying
- 0:25the reason david sharp could not be
- 0:26rescued was because it was physically
- 0:29impossible to do so
- 0:31[Music]
- 0:37lincoln and his sherpas are making good
- 0:39progress
- 0:40they reach the notorious second step
- 0:43shown
- 0:44here it's a 150 foot vertical rock wall
- 0:47the biggest obstacle of the climb
- 0:58[Music]
- 1:15after nine hours climbing lincoln and
- 1:17his three sherpas
- 1:18approached the summit i could see
- 1:22the summit ahead there were some prayer
- 1:24flags
- 1:25dangling over the very steep lip of the
- 1:28east face and that was an indicator that
- 1:31that was the summit
- 1:36it was obvious that we were going to
- 1:37make it
- 1:40[Music]
- 1:47there's a last little steep section to
- 1:50the summit which is just how it should
- 1:51be i guess
- 1:54and the one last step and i was on the
- 1:57top
- 1:59[Music]
- 2:06there was no one else there it was just
- 2:09an incredible
- 2:10privilege i guess to have it just to
- 2:11myself the highest person on the planet
- 2:18[Laughter]
- 2:21it was quite an unworldly feeling it's
- 2:24not
- 2:24it's not one of those you know punch the
- 2:27air type
- 2:28jubilation events tops of mountains
- 2:31aren't like that you've got the whole
- 2:33rest of the mountain it's only half time
- 2:34you've got
- 2:35you've got no locker room to go into you
- 2:39[Music]
- 2:48know
- 2:53[Music]
- 2:55back at base camp lincoln's old friend
- 2:58and 1984
- 2:59expedition member mike dillon is the
- 3:02first to hear the news in the
- 3:03communications tent
- 3:05that day that lincoln got to the summit
- 3:07really started well for us because i
- 3:09just happened to be near the radio room
- 3:11and i heard his voice this is lincoln
- 3:14we're on the summit
- 3:16we are on the summit monitoring progress
- 3:19eight thousand feet below is expedition
- 3:22leader
- 3:22alex abramoff these are the actual radio
- 3:26transmissions
- 3:29go down go down don't forget that you
- 3:32need
- 3:33to go down descent is also important
- 3:36over
- 3:37we know that we know that and thank you
- 3:40for making it possible for us
- 3:42for me thanks alex
- 3:46and he was totally lucid he was calm
- 3:49and it was nine o'clock in the morning
- 3:50and everything was
- 3:52it was fantastic
- 3:58his wife barbara receives the good news
- 4:01the phone call came to say that
- 4:04lincoln had summited and you know wasn't
- 4:06it fantastic
- 4:08but i did have this inner reservation
- 4:11because
- 4:12um i hadn't wanted to hear about the
- 4:15summit
- 4:15i just wanted to hear when i knew he was
- 4:17down and safe
- 4:19lincoln now has the most dangerous part
- 4:22of the climb
- 4:22ahead of him the descent
- 4:25[Music]
- 4:2722 years after his first attempt lincoln
- 4:30hall has reached the summit of everest
- 4:32we had a good rest on the summit we're
- 4:34there for 20 minutes um
- 4:36and that was really long enough because
- 4:38i feel very uncomfortable on a you know
- 4:41it might be a magnificent
- 4:42place but on a high summit i feel
- 4:44uncomfortable i know that it's a very
- 4:45dangerous place to be i know how quickly
- 4:47time can pass how you can be
- 4:49mesmerized by the view so we headed down
- 4:51the three sherpas and i
- 5:00[Music]
- 5:02150 feet below another member of
- 5:05lincoln's expedition
- 5:06thomas weber is forced to turn around
- 5:10very close to the summit thomas had to
- 5:11turn back because he was
- 5:14starting to lose his balance and sort of
- 5:17veer off
- 5:19some of his mental functions were
- 5:21beginning to not work properly
- 5:23and at that point the guide decided that
- 5:25they should head on down
- 5:27after the adrenaline surge of summiting
- 5:30climbers on descent
- 5:31face a bigger battle total exhaustion
- 5:35and the threat of running out of oxygen
- 5:38the descent of any big mountain is
- 5:39always
- 5:40the most exhausting part of the climb
- 5:45and so i wasn't surprised when i started
- 5:47to feel
- 5:48incredibly exhausted
- 5:52lincoln doesn't know it but he begins to
- 5:55suffer from high
- 5:56altitude cerebral edema
- 5:59low pressure is forcing fluid to leak
- 6:02inside his brain
- 6:03causing it to swell
- 6:06symptoms are lethargy hallucinations
- 6:09and irrational behavior lincoln must
- 6:12descend
- 6:13immediately or he will die
- 6:36[Music]
- 6:46can you hear me
- 6:50and i just developed this uh incredible
- 6:52lethargy
- 6:53um and i didn't
- 6:57see it as anything other than lethargy i
- 6:59wasn't unconscious but i just lost it
- 7:02but news of lincoln's condition is yet
- 7:04to reach base camp
- 7:06as the expedition leader is preoccupied
- 7:08with another
- 7:09unfolding tragedy this urgent radio call
- 7:13is received from the climber's 150
- 7:16feet below lincoln it is thomas webber's
- 7:26[Music]
- 7:28guide
- 7:42foreign
- 7:45[Music]
- 7:52okay uh if you are sure he did
- 7:56go down
- 7:58[Music]
- 8:03what apparently had happened was that
- 8:04thomas had um
- 8:07simply said to the guide i'm dying
- 8:11and he died just like that
- 8:16strange it's it's um he's had some
- 8:19premonition
- 8:20it's just one of these strange things
- 8:22that happen on everest
- 8:31geez what a tragedy
- 8:41but the worst news was out of the blue
- 8:43the expedition leader who was monitoring
- 8:44the um
- 8:45activities high on the mountain suddenly
- 8:48told thomas sherpa
- 8:50to go up again to help lincoln and he
- 8:52was in trouble that lincoln was in
- 8:54trouble
- 8:54first time we knew about it sorry i
- 8:57don't know how you feel
- 8:58you or how you feel yourself
- 9:02but now linker is very bad
- 9:05and if it's possible send one serpa
- 9:08up to hope lincoln
- 9:12is near the dead also and
- 9:16take one sharper oxygen and go down
- 9:26thomas's sherpa pemba begins to climb
- 9:29back
- 9:29up the mountain to where lincoln is
- 9:31fighting for his life
- 9:40i was struggling but
- 9:43the sherpas were struggling more because
- 9:45they knew that if they didn't get me
- 9:46down i would die that's what happens
- 9:48with cerebral edema and i was being so
- 9:51uncooperative
- 9:52it would have been the worst day of
- 9:54their lives
- 9:59back at advanced base camp lincoln's
- 10:02friend and fellow climber kevin ogilo
- 10:05is manning the radio kevin came to
- 10:07everest as part of a film crew
- 10:09but was unable to acclimate he remained
- 10:12at advanced base camp
- 10:13to support the team his video diary
- 10:16records what happens
