- 0:00The moment I stepped onto my front porch
- 0:02and saw nothing but a bare concrete slab
- 0:05where my truck should have been,
- 0:07my stomach dropped straight through the
- 0:09floor.
- 0:11I stood there for a solid 10 seconds,
- 0:13keys in hand, laptop bag digging into my
- 0:16shoulder, just staring at the empty
- 0:18space.
- 0:19My brain kept running a loop. Did I park
- 0:21on the street this morning? Did I take
- 0:23an Uber and forget? I retraced every
- 0:26minute of the day. Alarm at 6:15,
- 0:29coffee, back the truck out at 7:40,
- 0:32parked it in the hospital garage, took
- 0:34it home. I always take it home. I am not
- 0:37the kind of person who loses a vehicle.
- 0:40That truck was a midnight blue full-size
- 0:42pickup, and I had made the last payment
- 0:44on it 11 days ago.
- 0:4711 days.
- 0:48I had physically printed the payoff
- 0:50confirmation letter and put it in my
- 0:52filing cabinet because I wanted
- 0:54something I could hold.
- 0:56Something that proved what I had done.
- 0:58Five years of squeezing every dollar, of
- 1:01packing lunches, and skipping weekend
- 1:03trips, and wearing the same boots two
- 1:05winters in a row.
- 1:07I was a physical therapist working
- 1:0960-hour weeks, and that truck was the
- 1:11one material thing I had allowed myself
- 1:13to want.
- 1:15And now it was gone.
- 1:17The panic hit hard and fast. I dialed
- 1:20911 before I even got inside, then hung
- 1:23up when a thought crept in that I didn't
- 1:25want to believe. The spare key.
- 1:28Six weeks ago, during an ice storm that
- 1:30had turned the roads into a skating
- 1:32rink, I had asked my father to check on
- 1:34the house. I had given him the spare
- 1:36fob, just in case, I had said.
- 1:39Just in case.
- 1:41I sat down on the porch steps and called
- 1:43my father's cell.
- 1:45He picked up on the third ring, which
- 1:47told me everything before he even spoke.
- 1:51"Naomi," he said, easy and unbothered,
- 1:54the way you answer when you have no idea
- 1:56anything is wrong or when you know
- 1:58exactly what's wrong and have already
- 2:00decided it isn't.
- 2:02Dad. I pressed my fingers to the bridge
- 2:04of my nose. My truck is gone.
- 2:07A pause. Not a sharp alarmed pause, a
- 2:09loaded one. Yeah, well, Brendan needed
- 2:12it.
- 2:13The world tilted.
- 2:15Brendan is my brother. He's 33 years
- 2:18old. He has a girlfriend named Cassie
- 2:20and a new baby and a rental duplex 2
- 2:23miles from my parents' house. And the
- 2:25last time I checked, he did not have a
- 2:27valid driver's license because he lost
- 2:29it 18 months ago after a DUI on Route
- 2:3217.
- 2:34I'm sorry, I said slowly. What?
- 2:36He's got a baby now, Naomi. You can't
- 2:39expect a man to haul a car seat on the
- 2:41city bus. I used your spare key. He
- 2:43needed reliable transportation.
- 2:46You gave my truck to Brendan.
- 2:48I lent it to him for a while. He'll take
- 2:51care of it.
- 2:52I actually laughed, one short broken
- 2:55sound that surprised even me. Dad.
- 2:58That truck is in my name. I made every
- 3:00single payment. You can't just give away
- 3:02someone else's property.
- 3:04Don't be dramatic. You're a single
- 3:06woman. You work three blocks from the
- 3:08hospital. You can catch a ride or use
- 3:10the app.
- 3:12Brendan's building a life. Family
- 3:14support each other. That's what we do.
- 3:17I noticed he did not once use the word
- 3:19borrow. He had said lend, but only after
- 3:22I said gave. The slip was telling.
- 3:25When is he bringing it back? I asked,
- 3:27though my voice had gone very quiet.
- 3:30Naomi, stop. He's keeping it for now.
- 3:33Maybe you get yourself a little sedan,
- 3:35something practical for one person.
- 3:38Dad, does Brendan still have a suspended
- 3:40license?
- 3:41Dead silence.
- 3:44He's being careful, my father said
- 3:46finally.
- 3:47So, yes.
- 3:48I stood up off the porch steps. My hands
- 3:51had stopped shaking. Something colder
- 3:53and steadier had taken over. He is
- 3:55driving my $52,000 truck on a suspended
- 3:58license.
- 3:59He's your brother.
- 4:02I'm calling the police, I said.
- 4:04Naomi.
- 4:06I hung up.
- 4:08I want to explain something about
- 4:09Brendan and me before I go any further
- 4:12because the story sounds straightforward
- 4:14from the outside.
- 4:16Brother steals car. Sister calls cops.
- 4:20But it is never that simple when you've
- 4:21spent your whole life watching someone
- 4:23else get handed everything while you
- 4:25clawed for every inch.
- 4:28Brendan was the baby of the family, the
- 4:30only son, and from the time he was old
- 4:33enough to understand what that meant, he
- 4:35used it like a currency.
- 4:37My parents were not unkind people. They
- 4:39were not cruel. But they had a blind
- 4:41spot the size of a continent when it
- 4:43came to him.
- 4:44When Brendan failed his driving test
- 4:46twice, my father drove him to every
- 4:49shift at his warehouse job for 6 months
- 4:51without being asked. When Brendan's
- 4:54first business, a pressure washing
- 4:56company, fell apart because he never
- 4:59actually showed up to jobs, my parents
- 5:01paid back the three clients who had
- 5:03demanded refunds.
- 5:05When the DUI happened, my mother cried
- 5:08for 2 days about how hard Brendan's life
- 5:10had been.
- 5:11Nobody cried for the stranger on Route
- 5:1417 whose bumper he crumpled.
- 5:17I grew up adjacent to all of this. I was
- 5:19the daughter, which in our family
- 5:21translated to capable, therefore
- 5:23responsible for herself. I put myself
- 5:26through college. I paid for my own PT
- 5:28school. I worked weekend shifts at a
- 5:31rehab clinic while doing my clinicals.
- 5:34I never asked for much because asking
- 5:36never worked the way it worked for
- 5:37Brendan. What I asked for, I had to
- 5:40justify.
- 5:41What Brendan asked for, he received.
- 5:44The truck was mine.
- 5:46Every bolt and wire inch of it.
- 5:49And the fact that my father could reach
- 5:51into my life and take something I had
- 5:53worked 5 years for, hand it to a man who
- 5:55couldn't legally operate it, and tell me
- 5:58to go find something more appropriate
- 6:00for a single woman.
- 6:01That was not a misunderstanding. That
- 6:04was a declaration of how little he
- 6:05thought I belonged to myself.
- 6:09I went inside, found Officer Tanya
- 6:11Cole's number on the non-emergency card
- 6:13I kept on my fridge from a neighborhood
- 6:15watch meeting last fall.
- 6:17I called the main line, asked for the
- 6:19non-emergency dispatch, and reported a
- 6:22stolen vehicle.
- 6:24The woman on the phone was efficient and
- 6:26kind. She took the plate number, the
- 6:28VIN, the make and model. She asked if I
- 6:31had any idea who might have taken it.
- 6:35"My father used a spare key I gave him
- 6:36for emergencies," I said.
- 6:39"He gave the truck to my brother without
- 6:41my permission. My brother's license is
- 6:43currently suspended for a prior DUI."
- 6:46A brief pause. "So, your brother is
- 6:49operating the vehicle?"
- 6:51"Yes."
- 6:52"Do you know his current location?"
- 6:55I pulled up the manufacturer app on my
- 6:57phone. The truck was registered to me.
- 7:00The GPS tracking was active, and the
- 7:02little blue dot was pulsing at an
- 7:04address on Garfield Street that I didn't
- 7:06recognize. I gave her the address.
- 7:10"We'll send someone out," she said.
- 7:12They sent Deputy Marcus Webb, a
- 7:14solid-looking man in his mid-40s, who
- 7:17arrived at my house within 20 minutes.
- 7:20I had spent those 20 minutes at my
- 7:22kitchen table with a folder of
- 7:24documents, the title, the loan payoff
- 7:26notice, a screenshot of the GPS
- 7:28location, and Brendan's DMV record I
- 7:31pulled from a public court access
- 7:33database. He had two speeding violations
- 7:36in the last year, both flagged on what
- 7:39the record noted as a vehicle registered
- 7:41to our mother.
- 7:43That detail stopped me cold for a
- 7:44second, then I filed it.
- 7:47Deputy Webb sat across from me and
- 7:49listened. He did not try to talk me into
- 7:52calling it a civil matter. He read
- 7:54through the title, looked at the GPS
- 7:56screenshot, and set his notepad on the
- 7:59table.
- 8:00"For the record," he said, "the vehicle
- 8:03was taken from your property without
- 8:04your consent, correct?"
- 8:07"Correct. I was at work. My father used
- 8:09a key I gave him for emergencies."
- 8:12"And you communicated to your father
- 8:15that you wanted the vehicle returned."
- 8:17"He told me my brother was keeping it.
- 8:20He told me to get a sedan."
- 8:22Webb wrote something down, "And the
- 8:24operator of the vehicle is your brother,
- 8:27who holds a suspended license due to a
- 8:29prior DUI."
- 8:31"Yes."
- 8:33"All right, Ms. Naomi."
- 8:35He closed the folder and slid it back to
- 8:36me.
- 8:38"I want you to understand that once I
- 8:39put this out, it's in the system.
- 8:42If we locate your brother operating the
- 8:43vehicle, he will be stopped. Depending
- 8:46on how that goes, there could be
- 8:47charges.
- 8:49Driving on a suspended license is a
- 8:50misdemeanor that escalates fast with a
- 8:53prior.
- 8:54And the vehicle itself, depending on the
- 8:56D.A.'s read, could be treated as grand
- 8:58theft auto."
- 9:00I met his eyes. "I know."
- 9:03"Your family's going to have opinions
- 9:05about that."
- 9:06"They already do," I said.
- 9:09He nodded once and reached for his
- 9:11radio.
- 9:12The next 2 hours were strange and
- 9:14suspended, like the space between
- 9:16lightning and thunder.
- 9:18I made coffee I didn't drink.
- 9:20I sat on the couch and answered three
- 9:22calls from my mother, which I let go to
- 9:24voicemail.
- 9:26On the fourth call, I picked up, not
- 9:28because I was ready, but because I knew
- 9:30she wouldn't stop.
- 9:32"Naomi, your father is beside himself."
- 9:34She sounded like she'd been crying.
- 9:36"He only did this because we didn't know
- 9:38what else to do. Brendan has a baby. He
- 9:41needs a car.
- 9:43He needs a license first, I said.
- 9:46Oh, don't start with that. He's working
- 9:48on it.
- 9:49Mom, he's driving my truck on a
- 9:51suspended license. Do you understand
- 9:53what happens if he hits someone? My
- 9:55insurance, my registration, my name on
- 9:58every document.
- 10:00A silence. Then, you always have to make
- 10:03everything about yourself.
- 10:05I held the phone away from my face for a
- 10:08moment and looked at it the way you look
- 10:10at something you have just realized
- 10:12you've been holding wrong your entire
- 10:14life.
- 10:16I made the last payment 11 days ago, I
- 10:18said when I brought it back to my ear.
- 10:2011 days. And Dad used my spare key, the
- 10:24key I gave him in case there was a fire
- 10:26or I was in the hospital, to take my
- 10:28property and give it to someone who
- 10:30can't legally drive, and I'm making it
- 10:32about myself.
- 10:34He's your brother, she said. And I
- 10:37understood then that this was the whole
- 10:38argument, the complete and total
- 10:41architecture of their position.
- 10:43He is your brother, as if the blood
- 10:45relation was a lien on my assets.
- 10:48I've already called the police, I said.
- 10:51The sound she made was something between
- 10:53a gasp and a wail.
- 10:55Naomi, you take that back right now. You
- 10:58call them and tell them it was a
- 10:59mistake.
- 11:01It wasn't a mistake.
- 11:03Your father will have a heart attack. I
- 11:05mean it. His blood pressure.
- 11:08I'm going to go now, Mom.
- 11:11I hung up.
- 11:12My phone buzzed again almost
- 11:14immediately. Unknown number. I let it
- 11:17ring, then checked the voicemail. It was
- 11:20my cousin Adrian, who I hadn't spoken to
- 11:22in 2 years, informing me that my parents
- 11:25were devastated and that whatever I was
- 11:27doing, I needed to stop it.
- 11:30Adrian didn't know I was doing anything.
- 11:32She was operating entirely on the
- 11:34version of the story my mother had fed
- 11:37her in the last 20 minutes, which I
- 11:38could imagine vividly.
- 11:41Naomi is having some kind of episode and
- 11:43called the police on her own brother
- 11:45over a misunderstanding.
- 11:48I was not having an episode. I was
- 11:50sitting in my kitchen watching the blue
- 11:52dot on my GPS app.
- 11:54The blue dot was not on Garfield Street
- 11:56anymore.
- 11:58I opened the app fully. The dot had
- 12:01moved. It was currently at an
- 12:03intersection I recognized immediately.
- 12:05The corner of Lakeshore and 5th, which
- 12:08was home to two bars, a pizza place, and
- 12:11the kind of liquor store that stays open
- 12:13until 2:00 in the morning.
- 12:14It stopped in the liquor store parking
- 12:17lot.
- 12:18I called Deputy Webb's cell, which he
- 12:20had written on the back of his card.
- 12:23"He's at the Quick Mart on Lakeshore and
- 12:255th." I said when Webb picked up.
- 12:28"I know." Webb said. "I've got a unit
- 12:31two blocks out. Stay home, Miss Naomi.
- 12:33We'll call you."
- 12:34I did not stay home.
- 12:37I know that was probably the wrong call.
- 12:40Webb had told me clearly to let them
- 12:41handle it, but that truck was 11 days
- 12:44paid off and my brother was in a liquor
- 12:46store parking lot in it, and something
- 12:49animal in me needed to see it with my
- 12:51own eyes. I called a neighbor, borrowed
- 12:54their car with a rushed explanation, and
- 12:56drove to Lakeshore and 5th.
- 12:59I got there as the cruiser was pulling
- 13:01in.
- 13:02I parked on the street and got out. The
- 13:05lot was lit up bright orange under the
- 13:07sodium lights, and there was my parked
- 13:10perfectly fine, taking up a single space
- 13:12near the entrance. And there was Brendan
- 13:15leaning against the passenger door with
- 13:17a six-pack dangling from one hand
- 13:19talking to a friend I didn't recognize.
- 13:23He looked completely relaxed. He looked
- 13:25like a man without a single problem in
- 13:27the world.
- 13:28He spotted the cruiser before he spotted
- 13:30me.
- 13:32I watched his posture change. The easy
- 13:34slouch stiffened. He put the beer down
- 13:37on the trunk, my trunk, and raised both
- 13:40hands in the preemptive gesture of
- 13:41someone who has practiced it.
- 13:44He still hadn't seen me.
- 13:46The officer, young, calm, clearly
- 13:48experienced, stepped out and asked for
- 13:51license and registration.
- 13:53"It's my sister's truck," Brendan said.
- 13:55"She lent it to me. You can call her."
- 13:58"License and registration, please."
- 14:01"I look, I don't have my license on me
- 14:03right now, but I can."
- 14:05"Sir, are you in possession of a valid
- 14:07driver's license?"
- 14:09That's when Brendan saw me standing at
- 14:11the edge of the lot near the sidewalk.
- 14:15The look on his face moved through three
- 14:17stages fast, surprise, then a dawning
- 14:20fury, then something that tried to be an
- 14:22appeal and fell short.
- 14:24"Naomi." He stepped toward me, but the
- 14:27officer put a hand up. "Naomi, tell him
- 14:29it's fine. Tell him I have permission."
- 14:32"You don't have permission," I said. My
- 14:34voice was completely level. I had no
- 14:36idea how. "I called it in. That truck is
- 14:39mine."
- 14:40"Are you serious right now?" His voice
- 14:42climbed. "I have a baby. Cassie needed
- 14:45diapers. I was just making a run."
- 14:48"At the liquor store."
- 14:50"And you're going to have me arrested
- 14:52over a truck? Your own brother?"
- 14:55"You made that choice when you got
- 14:56behind the wheel," I said, "not me."
- 15:00The second officer had already run the
- 15:02plates.
- 15:03I heard the radio crackle.
- 15:05By then, Webb had arrived, too, pulling
- 15:07up behind the first cruiser, and I
- 15:10watched him walk over to the first
- 15:11officer and exchange a few words.
- 15:14Webb looked at me, gave a single nod,
- 15:16and went back to Brendan.
- 15:18They arrested him on the operating on
- 15:20suspended license charge.
- 15:23The truck would be impounded until the
- 15:24investigation ran its course.
- 15:27I stood in that parking lot and watched
- 15:29the cuffs go on my brother, and I felt
- 15:31nothing heroic about it.
- 15:33I felt tired. I felt sad in a way that
- 15:36was too old and too wide to cry about.
- 15:39I had not wanted this for him. I had
- 15:41wanted him to make one single choice
- 15:43that didn't require someone else to pay
- 15:45the price.
- 15:47My phone rang. Dad.
- 15:49I answered.
- 15:51"Web, what's happening?" he said, his
- 15:53voice loud and off-balance. He didn't
- 15:55even start with my name.
- 15:57"Where is Brendan?"
- 15:59"He's being detained," I said.
- 16:01"For driving on a suspended license in a
- 16:03vehicle that was reported stolen."
- 16:06"You tell them to let him go. You tell
- 16:08them right now. You call it off."
- 16:11"I can't call it off, Dad. It's not a
- 16:13pizza order."
- 16:15"I will," he sputtered. "If you do not
- 16:17fix this, Naomi, I swear to you, you are
- 16:19no longer welcome in this family. You
- 16:21are done. I will cut you out. You will
- 16:24not exist to us."
- 16:26It is a strange thing to hear a threat
- 16:28like that and feel lighter.
- 16:30"Okay," I said.
- 16:32"Okay?" He was incredulous. "That's all
- 16:35you have to say?"
- 16:37"I think that covers it," I said. "I
- 16:39also need you to mail my spare key back.
- 16:41Don't come to the house."
- 16:43I ended the call, walked to the officer
- 16:45holding the impound paperwork, and gave
- 16:48them every document I had in my folder.
- 16:50The title,
- 16:52the payoff letter,
- 16:53the GPS log with the timestamp showing
- 16:56the truck's movement from my driveway
- 16:58while I was at work. I had screenshotted
- 17:01and printed everything before Web
- 17:02arrived.
- 17:04I didn't get the truck back that night.
- 17:06It went to impound as part of the
- 17:08documented theft investigation, and I
- 17:10took my neighbor's borrowed car home at
- 17:1211:00 p.m.
- 17:14The driveway was empty again.
- 17:16But it felt different this time.
- 17:19The next several days were a sustained
- 17:21assault from every angle of my extended
- 17:23family.
- 17:25An aunt called to tell me that family
- 17:26doesn't call the police on family.
- 17:29A cousin texted that Brendan's
- 17:30girlfriend Cassie was overwhelmed with
- 17:33the baby and that I had put her in an
- 17:35impossible position. My mother left four
- 17:38voicemails, each one escalating from
- 17:40wounded to cold. The final one informing
- 17:43me that she hoped I was satisfied with
- 17:45what I had done.
- 17:47On day three, I found something I had
- 17:49not been looking for.
- 17:52I was going through my own documents,
- 17:54making sure I had everything organized
- 17:56for the DA's office, when I found a
- 17:58charge on an old shared account my
- 18:00mother and I had set up years ago to
- 18:03split a streaming subscription. The
- 18:05account was mostly dormant, but I still
- 18:08had access and out of some instinct I
- 18:11can't fully explain, I pulled the
- 18:12statement.
- 18:14There was a charge from an auto repair
- 18:16shop two months ago.
- 18:18An itemized receipt attached as a PDF
- 18:21that my mother had uploaded to the
- 18:22account by mistake when she was trying
- 18:25to send it to herself.
- 18:26Over $3,000.
- 18:28The repair description listed body work
- 18:31and a replaced front quarter panel on a
- 18:34vehicle matching my mother's sedan.
- 18:37Brendan had already wrecked one car.
- 18:39They hadn't told me.
- 18:41They had paid quietly out of what must
- 18:44have been savings they didn't have to
- 18:45spare, covered it up, and then when they
- 18:48couldn't do it a second time,
- 18:50when Brendan needed wheels again and
- 18:52they had nothing left, my father looked
- 18:55at his list of assets and he looked at
- 18:57me.
- 18:58I printed the receipt.
- 19:00I called the DA's office the following
- 19:02morning and asked if I could bring in
- 19:05supplemental documentation.
- 19:07The assistant said yes and gave me an
- 19:09appointment. I went in with my folder,
- 19:12which now included the repair receipt
- 19:14alongside a note about the timeline, the
- 19:17car damage, the repair, the month of
- 19:20silence, and then the morning my truck
- 19:22disappeared.
- 19:24The assistant district attorney was a
- 19:25woman about 10 years older than me named
- 19:28Vivica Moss.
- 19:30She read through the documents quietly,
- 19:32asked two or three questions, and set
- 19:34the folder down.
- 19:36"This is a pattern." She said.
- 19:39"Yes." I said.
- 19:41"The repair receipt doesn't
- 19:42automatically implicate your father in
- 19:45the theft, but paired with his own
- 19:47admission on your recorded phone call."
- 19:50She tapped the transcript I had provided
- 19:52from the voicemail he left after I hung
- 19:54up on him, the one where he told me to
- 19:56fix it or I was dead to him, and the GPS
- 19:59data, the timeline here is clear.
- 20:03My father was charged with unauthorized
- 20:05use of a motor vehicle. Brendan faced
- 20:07the suspended license charge plus the
- 20:10GTA count. My mother was not charged,
- 20:13though the repair situation put her in a
- 20:15difficult position with their insurance
- 20:17company, which was apparently a whole
- 20:20separate problem that I only heard about
- 20:23through my cousin Adrian, who despite
- 20:26everything kept me informed in terse
- 20:28two-line texts.
- 20:30The criminal cases moved slowly. Brendan
- 20:33pled out 18 months of probation,
- 20:36mandatory license reinstatement classes,
- 20:38and community service.
- 20:40My father's charge was eventually
- 20:41reduced in a plea deal to a fine and a
- 20:44formal civil judgment in my favor, which
- 20:47given his finances meant almost nothing
- 20:49financially, but was documented and
- 20:52real.
- 20:53I got my truck back on a Thursday, 14
- 20:55days after it disappeared.
- 20:58I drove to the impound lot in a rental,
- 21:00signed the paperwork, and sat in the
- 21:02driver's seat for a full minute before
- 21:04starting it.
- 21:06The cab smelled like Brendan's cheap
- 21:08body spray.
- 21:10There was a fast food bag on the floor
- 21:11of the backseat and a phone charger that
- 21:14wasn't mine plugged into the center
- 21:15console.
- 21:17I pulled it out. I put the bag in the
- 21:19trash can by the impound office.
- 21:22Then I drove to the car wash on
- 21:23Henderson Boulevard, the one with the
- 21:25full detail service, and I sat in the
- 21:28waiting room for 2 hours while they
- 21:30cleaned every surface.
- 21:33When they brought it back to me, I ate
- 21:35back to me, it smelled like leather
- 21:37conditioner and nothing else.
- 21:39I drove home. I pulled into the
- 21:41driveway.
- 21:42I sat there for a moment with the engine
- 21:44running, looking at the house I had
- 21:46bought with my own money and the
- 21:48driveway I owned and the truck in it
- 21:51that was mine.
- 21:52My mother called while I was sitting
- 21:54there.
- 21:55I let it ring.
- 21:57She had not called to apologize.
- 22:00I knew that without answering. She
- 22:02called to tell me something about
- 22:03Brendan's probation schedule conflicting
- 22:05with Cassie's doctor appointments and to
- 22:08ask if I could lend them my truck on
- 22:10Tuesdays.
- 22:11I know because she left a voicemail.
- 22:14I saved it in a folder labeled for the
- 22:17restraining order application I was
- 22:19already drafting.
- 22:21The restraining order was granted 6
- 22:23weeks later, a civil harassment order
- 22:25that required my parents and Brendan to
- 22:27stay away from my property and stop
- 22:30contacting me directly.
- 22:32My father's attorney argued it was
- 22:34excessive. The judge disagreed, noting
- 22:37the documented pattern of financial
- 22:39exploitation and the threat my father
- 22:42had made on the recorded voicemail.
- 22:45I framed nothing. I did not celebrate. I
- 22:48sat with it the way you sit with a
- 22:50medical diagnosis that's serious but
- 22:52manageable. Something has been named and
- 22:55now you know what you're working with.
- 22:58The holidays came and went without me
- 23:00showing up anywhere.
- 23:02My mother had said in one of the last
- 23:04voicemails before the order that I would
- 23:06be sorry when I was old and alone and
- 23:09had nobody.
- 23:10I thought about that for a while, the
- 23:12way you turn a stone over in your hand.
- 23:14Then I thought about what I actually
- 23:16had, a quiet house, a job I was good at,
- 23:20patients who made progress, a truck that
- 23:22was fully mine.
- 23:24I thought about Cassie, Brendan's
- 23:25girlfriend, who I had never known well,
- 23:28but who had texted me once in the middle
- 23:30of all of this.
- 23:31Just, "I'm sorry about what they did.
- 23:34You deserved better." I had texted back,
- 23:36"So do you."
- 23:38She hadn't responded, but I hoped she
- 23:40was keeping the message somewhere.
- 23:42Three months after it was all settled, I
- 23:45was driving back from a trail hike 2
- 23:47hours south of the city, windows down,
- 23:50the kind of March afternoon where the
- 23:52air smells like it means it.
- 23:55I had taken a Saturday entirely for
- 23:57myself, which was something I had
- 23:59historically been very bad at. I had
- 24:01driven the truck up a gravel road to a
- 24:03trailhead and hiked 7 miles and eaten a
- 24:06sandwich on a boulder and not answered a
- 24:09single text.
- 24:10On the drive back, somewhere between the
- 24:12long curve of the highway and the exit
- 24:15for home, I realized I hadn't thought
- 24:17about my father in almost 2 weeks. Not
- 24:20in the active, anxious way I used to,
- 24:23running calculations about how to manage
- 24:25his moods or protect my choices from his
- 24:27opinions. He had just been absent, like
- 24:31something that had finally stopped
- 24:32making noise.
- 24:35I took the exit for home. I pulled into
- 24:37my driveway. I killed the engine and sat
- 24:40in the quiet for a moment, the way I had
- 24:43been doing more lately, not because I
- 24:45was processing anything heavy, but
- 24:47because the quiet was mine and I had
- 24:49earned the right to sit in it.
- 24:51The driveway was exactly as I had left
- 24:54it.
- 24:55I got out of the truck, locked it, went
- 24:57inside.
- 24:58I made dinner, opened a good bottle of
- 25:00red I had been saving for something, and
- 25:03poured a glass without a particular
- 25:05reason. That, it turned out, was reason
- 25:08enough.
