- 0:00hello my name is Trevor Ram and today I
- 0:03will be presenting on Cynthia Cooper the
- 0:06former vice president of internal audit
- 0:11at Worldcom who blew the whistle on a
- 0:14large accounting fraud there in the
- 0:16early 2000s as I go through my
- 0:19presentation I'll discuss how she blew
- 0:21the whistle and the ways in which she
- 0:26followed both the IMAS
- 0:28ethical conflict resolution statement
- 0:31and some of the advice given by dr.
- 0:33Betty Rocco in his article entitled we
- 0:39don't need another hero the ways in
- 0:42which miss Cooper followed the ima
- 0:45ethical conflict resolution statement
- 0:47are twofold firstly she went ahead and
- 0:52discussed the large issues that she
- 0:54found with her direct supervisor who was
- 0:57the CEO of worldcom at the time Scott
- 0:59Sullivan now finding that mr. Sullivan
- 1:03was somewhat not somewhat but actually
- 1:06totally complicit in committing the
- 1:09fraud that she was uncovering miss
- 1:11Cooper then went ahead to the audit
- 1:14committee and discussed with them the
- 1:17discrepancies in accounting that she
- 1:19found mr. Sullivan to be perpetrating
- 1:22within WorldCom so the other thing that
- 1:27miss Cooper did was she followed very
- 1:30well some of dr. Vetter acos advice in
- 1:33two ways the first way was that she bent
- 1:36the rules but did not break them during
- 1:37the course of her investigation miss
- 1:40Cooper's team often was working late on
- 1:43hours in order to keep their
- 1:45investigation concealed from mrs.
- 1:47Sullivan and others in WorldCom another
- 1:50thing that they did was somewhat
- 1:51circumvent the IT controls in order to
- 1:54access world Commons accounting systems
- 1:59in order to further their investigation
- 2:01second way in which miss Cooper followed
- 2:05dr. veteranos advice was in picking her
- 2:07battles she chose to engage with mr.
- 2:09Sullivan only when
- 2:11the Audit Committee of worldcom could
- 2:15Thorat eight we rule on the
- 2:17discrepancies that she was bringing up
- 2:19in the frauds that she was exposing and
- 2:21in fact she did this so effectively that
- 2:23it led to mr. Sullivan's
- 2:25forced resignation by the audit
- 2:28committee and so because she followed
- 2:32the I am a conflict resolution doctrine
- 2:34as well as the the advice of dr. Vetter
- 2:38a co I feel that miss gogo is a very
- 2:41effective and ethical whistleblower from
- 2:43whom we can all learn a lot thank you
