- 0:03year
- 0:041985 in the distant Andes two young
- 0:07British climbers Joe Simpson and Simon
- 0:09Yates decided to do something
- 0:12extraordinary they were determined to
- 0:13conquer the western side of Cula Granda
- 0:16a huge and dangerous peak in the Andes
- 0:19their story is not just a tale of
- 0:21Adventure and human endurance but of
- 0:24survival courage and a decision that
- 0:26changed their lives forever
- 0:32Joe Simpson and Simon Yates were already
- 0:35experienced climbers in their early 20s
- 0:38and eager to leave their Mark in the
- 0:40world of mountaineering they belong to a
- 0:42new generation of climbers striving to
- 0:44conquer the most difficult peaks in the
- 0:47world the Peruvian Andes with their
- 0:50remote and harsh Beauty attracted them
- 0:53more than anything else Sula Grande at
- 0:576,344 M was particular ularly appealing
- 1:01only a few climbers dared to attempt to
- 1:03climb its western side a steep wall of
- 1:06ice and rock that was considered
- 1:08virtually impossible to
- 1:12ascend in May 1985 Joe and Simon arrived
- 1:16in the small mountain town of huas ready
- 1:19to begin their Ascent they carefully
- 1:21planned their route gathered equipment
- 1:23and prepared physically and mentally for
- 1:25the climb their goal was simple to climb
- 1:28the western side of suar grand and
- 1:30return alive on the morning of June 13th
- 1:331985 Joe and Simon set off they went in
- 1:36Alpine style carrying only the most
- 1:39necessary supplies and equipment on
- 1:41their backs moving very quickly unlike
- 1:44traditional mountaineering which uses
- 1:46fixed ropes and established camps Alpine
- 1:49style requires speed but comes with risk
- 1:52it leaves no room for errors initially
- 1:55the weather was favorable and on the
- 1:57first day the guys made quite good
- 1:59progress
- 2:00they steadily climbed upwards using ice
- 2:02axes and crampons to cling to the Frozen
- 2:05surface the snow was deep the air thin
- 2:08but they kept moving after several days
- 2:11of intense climbing they reached a point
- 2:14just below the summit the mood was
- 2:16upbeat they were close to achieving
- 2:18their
- 2:21goal on the morning of June 18th Joe and
- 2:24Simon reached the summit of suula Grande
- 2:28the view from the top was breatht making
- 2:30endless expanses of sharp Peaks and deep
- 2:33valleys stretching beneath them for a
- 2:35moment they felt Triumph they had done
- 2:37it they had conquered one of the most
- 2:40difficult peaks in the
- 2:44Andes but reaching the Summit is only
- 2:46half the journey The Descent as every
- 2:49climber knows can be just as dangerous
- 2:51if not more so the weather began to
- 2:53change clouds were gathering the guys
- 2:56understood that they had to move quickly
- 2:58to descend safely as they began The
- 3:01Descent Joe and Simon encountered
- 3:03difficult conditions the snow was too
- 3:05soft complicating The Descent visibility
- 3:09was greatly reduced now they had to move
- 3:11slowly and carefully but they didn't
- 3:14doubt they could descend
- 3:18safely and then disaster struck on a
- 3:21steep slope Joe lost his balance one of
- 3:23the crampons those metal spikes attached
- 3:26to boots slipped and he fell Joe rolled
- 3:29down the slope gaining speed until he
- 3:31stopped abruptly his right leg hit a
- 3:33rock hard and he felt a sharp burning
- 3:36pain his leg was broken and at such a
- 3:39height this was a death sentence Joe
- 3:42panicked he knew that with a broken leg
- 3:45his chances of leaving the mountain were
- 3:48extremely slim but Simon didn't want to
- 3:51give up and abandon His companion he
- 3:53made an improvised splint for Joe's leg
- 3:56so they could continue The Descent but
- 3:57it wasn't that simple
- 4:02the climbers developed a plan using a 45
- 4:05M rope Simon lowered Joe down steep
- 4:08slopes 45 M at a time then he would
- 4:11descend himself and they would repeat
- 4:13the process it was slow exhausting work
- 4:16and the weather was getting worse at the
- 4:17same time the wind howled terribly and
- 4:21the snow fell more actively hindering
- 4:23visibility they were exhausted freezing
- 4:26but kept going many hours passed under
- 4:29unnoticed and night fell now it was
- 4:32completely dark and Simon could barely
- 4:34see the end of the Rope he lowered His
- 4:37companion Joe into the darkness hoping
- 4:39they were still on the right
- 4:44path and then the unthinkable happened
- 4:48Simon lowered his friend over the edge
- 4:49of a cliff now Joe was hanging in the
- 4:53air right above a huge crass a deep
- 4:55crack in the glacier he tried to shout
- 4:57to Simon but the wind round out his
- 5:00voice they were stuck in a very awkward
- 5:02position Joe's weight was pulling the
- 5:04Rope down Simon not understanding what
- 5:08had happened fell into despair he felt
- 5:11the weight of his partner's body pulling
- 5:13them both down his hands were freezing
- 5:15and strength was leaving
- 5:20him the climber faced an unimaginably
- 5:23difficult choice if he continued to hold
- 5:25the Rope sooner or later they would both
- 5:27fall and die but if he it then he had a
- 5:31chance but Joe would most likely
- 5:34die at that moment Simon made a decision
- 5:37that haunted him for the rest of his
- 5:39life he took out a knife and cut the
- 5:43rope Joe fell into the darkness he fell
- 5:46into a crevasse dropping about 30 m
- 5:49before landing on a narrow ice ledge
- 5:51miraculously he survived the
- 5:56fall the guy found himself in a huge ice
- 5:59cave in cold Solitude and excruciating
- 6:02pain he knew Simon would consider him
- 6:05dead Joe realized that he had only two
- 6:08options wait for death or try to find a
- 6:11way out he decided to fight for his
- 6:17life using an ice ax Joe began to crawl
- 6:20deeper into the crass looking for a way
- 6:22out the cold was unbearable and the
- 6:25broken leg made every movement torturous
- 6:28after several hours of crawling he
- 6:30noticed a beam of light in the distance
- 6:33it was an exit but it was far up above
- 6:36with Incredible determination Joe raised
- 6:39the ice ax above his head and plunged it
- 6:41into the ice wall using his only healthy
- 6:44leg and the ice ax he slowly pulled
- 6:46himself up each movement caused waves of
- 6:49pain but there was no other way out he
- 6:51had to
- 6:55endure incomprehensibly the climber
- 6:58managed to get out of the ice cave which
- 7:01however did not yet mean salvation now
- 7:03Joe was on the glacier several miles
- 7:06from their base camp his leg was useless
- 7:08and he had no food or
- 7:11water the day spent in the crass was
- 7:13already coming to an end the sun was
- 7:16setting and the temperature was dropping
- 7:19he needed to keep moving otherwise death
- 7:21from hypothermia was
- 7:23certain Joe continued to crawl for the
- 7:27next 3 days Joe crawled across the sea
- 7:29seemingly endless Glacier he dragged
- 7:31himself inch by inch in unbearable
- 7:34pain dehydrated and exhausted the
- 7:37climber began to experience
- 7:39hallucinations at times he heard voices
- 7:41in his head or thought he saw people who
- 7:43weren't
- 7:47there meanwhile Simon had already
- 7:49reached the base camp he was devastated
- 7:52believing Joe was dead because of him
- 7:54but it was the only choice he could make
- 7:56even though it was hard to accept
- 8:00Simon waited in the camp for several
- 8:01days hoping for a miracle but eventually
- 8:05accepted the fact that Joe wouldn't
- 8:06return but his injured companion wasn't
- 8:09dead and was still crawling on the third
- 8:12day Joe saw the base camp he shouted as
- 8:15loudly as he could exhausting all his
- 8:18remaining energy and Simon heard him
- 8:21Simon couldn't believe his ears he ran
- 8:23out of the tent and saw Joe exhausted
- 8:25beaten and barely alive crawling towards
- 8:28the camp together with another climber
- 8:30Richard Hawking they rushed to the
- 8:32Survivor and dragged him to the tent
- 8:35over the next few days Simon and Richard
- 8:37nursed Joe as best they could they fed
- 8:40him gave him water and kept him warm as
- 8:43soon as Joe stabilized they set off on a
- 8:45new difficult Journey to the nearest
- 8:47Village where they could get
- 8:49[Music]
- 8:51help Joe was eventually taken to a
- 8:54hospital where he had surgery on his
