- 0:17it is a city that pays a lot of
- 0:20attention to the environment and wants
- 0:22to look at the environment as a strategy
- 0:24for living we have an urban planning
- 0:26that has a tradition of over 50 years
- 0:28moving in the same direction life in
- 0:31Curitiba today is largely credited to
- 0:34the pioneering work of urban planner and
- 0:36politician Jaime Lerner who served three
- 0:39terms as mayor the first in 1971 and
- 0:43also governed the state of Parana for
- 0:45two terms cgtn interviewed him in 2014
- 0:48in the run-up to the World Cup held in
- 0:51Brazil with matches held in kurichiba
- 0:53Lerner passed away last year there are
- 0:57some issues that makes the difference
- 1:01which is good quality of life good
- 1:04Solutions on public transport and

- 1:10the Jaime learned Institute which
- 1:12manages the architect's Legacy and
- 1:14facilitates the sharing of experiences
- 1:16with other cities across the globe
- 1:22talks about sustainability began in
- 1:25criti by the time when the word
- 1:27sustainability didn't even exist the
- 1:30actions my father took were a response
- 1:33to actual issues faced by the city so
- 1:36since that time sustainability is seen
- 1:38as a response to actual problems not
- 1:41just as a theory sound and consistent
- 1:44public policies have been essential to
- 1:46make Curitiba an international reference
- 1:48in sustainability and urban planning but
- 1:51there are also historic reasons in the
- 1:54city's development that helped to reach
- 1:56this position this historian says that
- 1:59the way kurichiba developed in the 19th
- 2:01century with the focus on settlers and
- 2:04away from the slave run plantations
- 2:06common in other parts of the country may
- 2:09have played an important part in
- 2:10creating a stronger sense of belonging
- 2:13here
- 2:19the south of Brazil is part of Brazil
- 2:22and faces the same problems as the rest
- 2:24of the country but maybe to a lesser
- 2:27degree this may have to do with the fact
- 2:29that the settlement here is more based
- 2:32on the arrival of migrants to whom land
- 2:34was sold to Foster the establishment of
- 2:37small Family Farms
- 2:39still has many issues to deal with when
- 2:42it comes to sustainability and the
- 2:44environment but the city's achievements
- 2:46prove that good planning can go a long
- 2:48way to make in a good City Paolo Cabral
