  1. 0:08for us as believers the dignity of work
  2. 0:13comes out of a whole theology of
  3. 0:15creation in Genesis we see that God has
  4. 0:20made creation and entrusted to us the
  5. 0:25continuation of his work work is God's
  6. 0:29gift to us we're able to use the
  7. 0:33different gifts that God has given us
  8. 0:35physical gifts spiritual mental gifts to
  9. 0:38make the world a better place because
  10. 0:40the church recognizes that every person
  11. 0:42is created in God's image and likeness
  12. 0:44and therefore has inherent dignity we
  13. 0:46also recognize that work exists for
  14. 0:48people people don't exist for work so
  15. 0:52recognizing the rights of workers is one
  16. 0:53of the ways that we honor the dignity of
  17. 0:55every person among the things that we
  18. 0:58need to uphold the the just wage of safe
  19. 1:02working conditions and the possibility
  20. 1:06of the worker to participate in the
  21. 1:08fruits of his life Catholic teaching
  22. 1:11holds that workers have the right to
  23. 1:12dignified work as well as to time for
  24. 1:15leisure and rest and they have the right
  25. 1:17to benefits such as sick leave and
  26. 1:19maternity leave and paternity leave and
  27. 1:22health care workers have a right to
  28. 1:24adequate support in their retirement and
  29. 1:26also to choose to form unions if that's
  30. 1:29what they like to do Catholic teaching
  31. 1:31also holds that workers have
  32. 1:33responsibilities they have the
  33. 1:35responsibility to provide a fair day's
  34. 1:38work for a fair day's wage managers and
  35. 1:41supervisors and employers can make
  36. 1:43decisions in their workplaces that
  37. 1:45uphold the rights of workers that
  38. 1:47provide decent wages and a safe working
  39. 1:49environment we have situations here
  40. 1:52right in here in our neighborhood where
  41. 1:54we've seen people that were not
  42. 1:56employable and the best thing is when
  43. 1:59they can get back on their feet with the
  44. 2:03help of church and our diocese and
  45. 2:06program
  46. 2:06that will help them find a job with
  47. 2:09meaning all of a sudden the neighborhood
  48. 2:11gets better they feel great about
  49. 2:13themselves and there's a harmony that's
  50. 2:16created that it really shows the dignity
  51. 2:19of work sometimes it can be easy to
  52. 2:22forget the workers who are involved in
  53. 2:24producing the goods that we consume so
  54. 2:25it can be helpful to think back if you
  55. 2:28take a cup of coffee thinking all the
  56. 2:30way back through the Roasters and to the
  57. 2:32farmers who actually grew the beans
  58. 2:34there are many workers in that process
  59. 2:36and our decisions impact them it's
  60. 2:39important that our people be informed
  61. 2:41about the different issues around work
  62. 2:44in our society and try to promote just
  63. 2:47laws and talk to people about the
  64. 2:51importance of respecting their crews
  65. 2:53rights as consumers we need to be aware
  66. 2:56that really every purchasing decision is
  67. 2:59a moral decision we can purchase
  68. 3:00ethically produced products or Fairtrade
  69. 3:03products we can purchase locally and
  70. 3:05support local farmers for example all
  71. 3:08Catholics need to be aware that the
  72. 3:11support of the way that we live our life
  73. 3:12of discipleship by promoting human
  74. 3:16dignity defending the workers rights
  75. 3:18looking for ways to make our society
  76. 3:21more attentive to the needs of those who
  77. 3:24are most vulnerable
