  18. 0:50water under the bridge let's looking
  19. 0:52forward the week this week's material is
  20. 0:54OS virtual memory and IO so this is our
  21. 0:58agenda for today we're going to welcome
  22. 1:00we have two guests we're delighted to
  23. 1:01have two guests join us uh Sharon
  24. 1:03Mueller from Berkeley College
  25. 1:04engineering advising group and K
  26. 1:07asanovich from Berkeley and also the
  27. 1:09SciFi the SciFi uh CEO so exactly
  28. 1:12founder so co-founder happy to have him
  29. 1:14join us a little bit later uh we'll do
  30. 1:16Computing the news as we always do and
  31. 1:18we'll talk about the week's plan and
  32. 1:19always have't ask us anything uh Q&A
  33. 1:21time at the end so um let me do check
  34. 1:25the Q&A good that stuff all right we're
  35. 1:27using M by the way for the anonymous
  36. 1:29attendee that's how we're doing this is

  40. 1:38Sharon so you can get added here there
  41. 1:41we go let me introduce Sharon Mueller
  42. 1:43who is the director of advising and
  43. 1:44policy from the engineering service and
  44. 1:45services thank you Bor for reaching out
  45. 1:47and thank you for Sharon for be able to
  46. 1:49make the time for our live session we've
  47. 1:51got 43 students here I predicted around
  48. 1:5350 but many many many hundreds of so
  49. 1:55watch this and we are recording this
  50. 1:57watch this a little bit later when they
  51. 1:59have have the chance
  52. 2:00um want to give you the floor certainly
  53. 2:03this is a a remarkable semester it's a
  54. 2:05semester that has caused um a remarkable
  55. 2:08amount of um stress and and just
  56. 2:12disruption among many many students this
  57. 2:14week isn't going to help us in terms of
  58. 2:16the chaos that's bringing but if you
  59. 2:17imagine if you lay just layer upon layer
  60. 2:19of just it's not just covid it's co and
  61. 2:21I can't leave my house and it's co it's
  62. 2:23it's also online learning like you could
  63. 2:25have no Co but online learning you can
  64. 2:27have an online course you just do in the
  65. 2:28middle of nowhere right but you have
  66. 2:29online learning on top of that you got
  67. 2:31the stresses not courses giving
  68. 2:32flexibility you've got fires and smoke
  69. 2:36and I mean right could you please how
  70. 2:39about what's the Billy Crystal line from
  71. 2:40Princess Bride how about I give you a
  72. 2:42paper cut and let you pour lemon juice
  73. 2:44on it I mean could you really make it as
  74. 2:45bad right so thank you again for being
  75. 2:48here thank you for supporting for all
  76. 2:49the hard work you do to have you you and
  77. 2:51your team support our students um feel
  78. 2:53free to share some of the things that
  79. 2:55you can help them think about how to how
  80. 2:56to be resilient how to support
  81. 2:58themselves where to reach out all all
  82. 2:59the resources that we have at the
  83. 3:01College engineering and campus level
  84. 3:02what you know it's people at different
  85. 3:04levels of of Crisis from from oh I'm
  86. 3:06feeling stressed to I'm feeling a lot of
  87. 3:08stress to oh my gosh you to all whatever
  88. 3:09the the fin line is what what do we do
  89. 3:12you know how do people know what to do
  90. 3:13what the next levels are what what
  91. 3:15bucket they fall into well this is a
  92. 3:16little stress I talk to you know who etc
  93. 3:19etc plus planning for the spring that's
  94. 3:21all that stuff you know that there was
  95. 3:23word about reducing class sizes and now
  96. 3:26I can't graduate like it's just layer
  97. 3:27upon layer upon all these things and
  98. 3:29yuss Berkeley's in a hole of $450
  99. 3:31million or something so thank you so
  100. 3:33much everybody with the lemon juice all
  101. 3:35over my body so anyway Sharon please
  102. 3:39welcome again and feel free to share and
  103. 3:40I'll I'll I'll I'll on the spotlight
  104. 3:42myself and you can just take the floor
  105. 3:43and share your thoughts with the
  106. 3:44students thank you so much thank you so
  107. 3:46much for that introduction you kind of
  108. 3:48stole my thunder there because I was
  109. 3:49going to mention all those things please
  110. 3:52uh yeah so certainly I think what you
  111. 3:54touched upon is our emotions are
  112. 3:56heightened right now and I know this to
  113. 3:59be true for myself and everyone in my
  114. 4:01circle and certainly for our students as
  115. 4:04well um so I think it's important to
  116. 4:08recognize that that's normal that is a
  117. 4:10normal response to everything that you
  118. 4:13mentioned um but the benefits of being
  119. 4:16part of a big campus uh are that we do
  120. 4:19have a lot of resources to help students
  121. 4:22and um I want to highlight kind of the
  122. 4:25big ones to help students out it's okay
  123. 4:28if I share my screen
  124. 4:30yes please yes pleas oh no no share
  125. 4:33screen here we go all panelists all you
  126. 4:36ready to go it's all you yep sorry oh
  127. 4:38there you go okay fixed it just fixed it
  128. 4:41so um here we
  129. 4:45go so I just wanted to highlight are you
  130. 4:47seeing my screen that says resources
  131. 4:49okay perfect all right so um I just
  132. 4:52wanted to highlight the resources that
  133. 4:55are available to all students now some
  134. 4:58of these even though they're in the
  135. 4:59College of Engineering I also want to
  136. 5:01mention that they are available to
  137. 5:02students in this class um because eeks
  138. 5:05is within the College of Engineering so
  139. 5:08General well-being there's I found an
  140. 5:11article at UCSF a while ago that I
  141. 5:13thought was super helpful in just
  142. 5:16normalizing the experience that we're
  143. 5:19all having and also beyond that really
  144. 5:22gave some tools and tips on how to
  145. 5:25manage those feelings and what can you
  146. 5:27do for yourself to kind of get get you
  147. 5:29through this time um so if you want to
  148. 5:33read that article I found it to be very
  149. 5:35helpful so I wanted to share it in ESS
  150. 5:38we actually have three psychologists who
  151. 5:41work within engineering student services
  152. 5:44however they are available to all of you
  153. 5:46as well and I've put our website on
  154. 5:48there they have drop in hours three days
  155. 5:50a week and um you are welcome to contact
  156. 5:54them at any time for
  157. 5:56support um also the Caps which is
  158. 6:00counseling and Psychological Services
  159. 6:02which is part of university health
  160. 6:04services has even more counselors and um
  161. 6:07social workers available for you I think
  162. 6:11you know I kind of look at it as
  163. 6:13coaching you know even Olympic athletes
  164. 6:16need coaching and we're kind of in the
  165. 6:18Olympics of life right now we're kind of
  166. 6:21in the Olympics of trying to get through
  167. 6:24this race that feels like it's
  168. 6:26endless um so if you can if you feel
  169. 6:30like you could really use some coaching
  170. 6:32and and maybe some tools to help you get
  171. 6:36through your day and kind of think about
  172. 6:38what we're all managing and how to
  173. 6:40manage that yourself I highly recommend
  174. 6:43reaching out to the
  175. 6:45counselors there's also a part of their
  176. 6:47website which just touches upon Stress
  177. 6:49and Anxiety management just identifying
  178. 6:52what am I feeling and then recognizing
  179. 6:55that there are things that I could do to
  180. 6:57help myself and what are those
  181. 7:00and then there's uh 211.org which is if
  182. 7:03you don't want to use the university
  183. 7:05resources you can go to 211.org and you
  184. 7:08put in your zip code and you'll be
  185. 7:09connected to a whole bunch of resources
  186. 7:11in your local
  187. 7:13community um now we know that many
  188. 7:17families are also experiencing financial
  189. 7:20hardship right now the campus does have
  190. 7:23a basic need
  191. 7:24Center and if you are having housing
  192. 7:28issues or for food insecurity they can
  193. 7:32assign to you a case manager who will
  194. 7:35basically get you connected to all of
  195. 7:37those resources the campus also has a a
  196. 7:40student technology uh Equity program
  197. 7:44that can help you if you're having
  198. 7:46issues if your laptop is old and you
  199. 7:47need a new laptop or if you need Wi-Fi
  200. 7:50or hotspots you can apply for those
  201. 7:53funds and also financial aid is doing
  202. 7:57cost of attendance adjustments
  203. 8:00pretty regularly for students
  204. 8:02recognizing that um your cost of
  205. 8:04attendance may have changed and your
  206. 8:07financial situation may have changed so
  207. 8:09that's something that's available to you
  208. 8:11always and also there are emergency
  209. 8:14loans that you can get through financial
  210. 8:17aid now we know that all of all of this
  211. 8:21can lead to academic struggles and
  212. 8:23that's understandable that we we all
  213. 8:26have a lot going on and it's hard to F
  214. 8:28harder to focus
  215. 8:30you might be under additional stress
  216. 8:32because perhaps you're feeling that this
  217. 8:34grade in your course is essential
  218. 8:37because you're trying to declare
  219. 8:39computer science or maybe you're in the
  220. 8:41College of Engineering and you're trying
  221. 8:42to switch to eeks so um that can add
  222. 8:46another layer of stress so some of you
  223. 8:50may find that you're
  224. 8:53overloaded and you may be in 13 units or
  225. 8:5612 units and you may feel overloaded and
  226. 8:58that's fine
  227. 8:59I know that letters and science is
  228. 9:03totally flexible with late drops this
  229. 9:05semester in fact there's a form
  230. 9:07available to letters and science
  231. 9:08students on your my academics class
  232. 9:11enrollment card in Cal Central you just
  233. 9:14have to fill out the form and you can
  234. 9:16drop one or more classes in engineering
  235. 9:19we're also being flexible with late
  236. 9:22drops ours is a Google form the link is
  237. 9:24is on this slide and you just have to
  238. 9:28write a sent or two about what you're
  239. 9:30challenged with as far as covid-19 or
  240. 9:32remote learning and we're allowing late
  241. 9:35drops we're allowing students to go
  242. 9:37below 12 units um which leads me to
  243. 9:40reduced course loads and uh all colleges
  244. 9:44now are being flexible because we
  245. 9:47understand what students are going
  246. 9:49through and we know that sometimes you
  247. 9:52just can't carry the load that you would
  248. 9:53normally
  249. 9:55carry and then there's also the option
  250. 9:57of an incomplete grade and that's
  251. 9:59something that you if you've been making
  252. 10:01good progress in the course up until now
  253. 10:04but you're just feeling like uh you're
  254. 10:07not going to be able to finish all of
  255. 10:08your courses that might be something
  256. 10:09that you want to talk to your professors
  257. 10:13about we we've already actually
  258. 10:15pre-approved everybody if if anybody
  259. 10:17asks for it they get it yes without any
  260. 10:19any questions asked how about that for a
  261. 10:21policy is that
  262. 10:24perfect yeah that's great that's great
  263. 10:27so that's all so they have that in their
  264. 10:28back pocket exactly that's said and
  265. 10:30actually about 10 people 10 10 people
  266. 10:32asked for that already and have already
  267. 10:34pre-approved pre-approved theyve get it
  268. 10:36and no questions asked could they you
  269. 10:40they don't email thats a form there's a
  270. 10:41form online they just fill in the form
  271. 10:42and it's all done that's great that's
  272. 10:45great that's great because I know
  273. 10:47students don't want to drop courses I
  274. 10:48mean we're we're late in the semester
  275. 10:50and they put in a lot of work and so
  276. 10:52that's a really great option for them we
  277. 10:55just remind students of course they do
  278. 10:57have to finish it at some point and they
  279. 10:59have to be mindful that that's going to
  280. 11:01then add to their workload in the spring
  281. 11:04semester or during the summer and so
  282. 11:06they should plan accordingly we can work
  283. 11:08with those students on their course for
  284. 11:10those semesters as well that's huge I've
  285. 11:12also by the way promised to extend it as
  286. 11:13long as they need it so so many people
  287. 11:15say we won't extend it past the next
  288. 11:17semester but I've already said if you
  289. 11:18need the summer you need next fall
  290. 11:20whatever however long it takes I'll be
  291. 11:21here for you and allow to extend them
  292. 11:23however long it takes for them to finish
  293. 11:24it that's great and they just need to
  294. 11:26know that there is a form that they need
  295. 11:28to fill out with their call in order for
  296. 11:30us to do that on the back end that's
  297. 11:31right that's right yep all right well
  298. 11:34thank you very much to extend it to
  299. 11:37extend it they don't need form to extend
  300. 11:38it only for the ex extend it Sharon do
  301. 11:41you have time for a couple of questions
  302. 11:43yes exactly sure perfect yeah so the the
  303. 11:46first one that you know the one that we
  304. 11:47are encountering and we we have people
  305. 11:50students who are abroad at the moment
  306. 11:52and they are often confused what does
  307. 11:55apply to them and what they
  308. 11:58can uh
  309. 11:59what kind of help they can get when
  310. 12:01they're abroad that's true right do you
  311. 12:03mean as far as like an international
  312. 12:06student who's worried about course load
  313. 12:08because of a Visa or yeah course load
  314. 12:11related to Visa related to incompletes
  315. 12:15related to um a mental health support
  316. 12:18services too yeah right yeah yeah I
  317. 12:20guess all everything's remote right so
  318. 12:22you're calling up different different
  319. 12:23different support levels so it's yeah so
  320. 12:25all the support is available to them the
  321. 12:28same it might work so well for them
  322. 12:30because maybe it's in the middle of the
  323. 12:31night for them oh that's a good point a
  324. 12:33good point yeah a lot of the advisers
  325. 12:36are trying to hold evening hours or
  326. 12:38early morning hours to accommodate
  327. 12:40students who are all over the world um
  328. 12:42and I think there are some counselors
  329. 12:44doing that as well as far as resources
  330. 12:46they're all available to all students um
  331. 12:50with course loads it depends on the
  332. 12:52students visa and whether or not they're
  333. 12:54in an active V Visa status a lot of
  334. 12:56students aren't right now because
  335. 12:58they're not in the us and so they don't
  336. 13:00have to be on an on their visa at the
  337. 13:03current moment we are advising students
  338. 13:06however that if they're applying for a
  339. 13:07visa to return which likely they will be
  340. 13:11they should check in with the Berkeley
  341. 13:12International office to make sure that
  342. 13:14taking reduced course load now wouldn't
  343. 13:17have any effect on their application for
  344. 13:19a Visa for when we do come back to
  345. 13:21campus but there are also accommodations
  346. 13:24even for students who are on a student
  347. 13:25visa where they're allowed to drop below
  348. 13:2812 units they just have to go through a
  349. 13:30process with the uh Berkeley
  350. 13:32International office in order to do that
  351. 13:34and we have to sign off on it but we're
  352. 13:36signing off on those all the time and so
  353. 13:39I know that a lot of students are doing
  354. 13:40that this semester um I don't think this
  355. 13:43is relevant for students who are getting
  356. 13:44incompletes though because the
  357. 13:46incomplete doesn't get triggered in the
  358. 13:47system until the end of the year right
  359. 13:48nobody would know if they took an
  360. 13:50incomplete for this course they stop
  361. 13:51doing the work in this course they could
  362. 13:52breathe they could finish the rest of
  363. 13:53the semester with all the other courses
  364. 13:55the incomplete wouldn't take nobody
  365. 13:57would know about it until Boom the Great
  366. 13:59are in in December so so that wouldn't
  367. 14:02so that's that's not an issue for
  368. 14:03anybody anybody want to complete don't
  369. 14:04worry about a course don't worry about
  370. 14:05all those to drop me below because no
  371. 14:07one would know about it until the end of
  372. 14:08the the year that's right they're still
  373. 14:10in a full course load yeah that's right
  374. 14:12even though they're not really but but
  375. 14:13they are so it's that's right from the
  376. 14:15point of view yeah yeah yeah but but the
  377. 14:16flip side of that is that next semester
  378. 14:18they still to have their minimal course
  379. 14:20load on top of this course they're doing
  380. 14:22for no credit so that's it's a little
  381. 14:24bit of borrow from one Rob from Peter to
  382. 14:26pay paal where next spring it's it's a
  383. 14:29heavier course Lo you're taking 12 but
  384. 14:30you're really taking 16 because there's
  385. 14:33a little bit of that so you need to make
  386. 14:34factor that into the to the decision
  387. 14:36process as well right right that is part
  388. 14:39of the process but Summer's out there I
  389. 14:41mean The Summer's out there I would say
  390. 14:42doing the summer then because you know
  391. 14:43you have to have middle of a course load
  392. 14:44for all spring but summer who cares you
  393. 14:46could have a summer job and you could be
  394. 14:47taking 61c in the evenings I mean you do
  395. 14:50whatever you want to in the summer so I
  396. 14:51would say so just wait till the summer
  397. 14:52don't worry about the spring is I think
  398. 14:54spring is really hard just take in the
  399. 14:55summer you'll be fine I think it's
  400. 14:56easier to do yeah I would say most
  401. 14:58students who get in completes in the
  402. 15:00fall if they have the opportunity to
  403. 15:01finish it over the summer that's usually
  404. 15:03when they try to do it right right it
  405. 15:04might not be that much it turns out some
  406. 15:06I mean some people you know get sick and
  407. 15:08you know they're they can't hold their
  408. 15:10dinner down the day before the final
  409. 15:11they've done everything but the final
  410. 15:13then what they basically do is just take
  411. 15:14the final again so that's that's not a
  412. 15:15lot of workload but depends on how much
  413. 15:16work you have to actually still do for
  414. 15:18the next semester right yeah right makes
  415. 15:21sense wonderful there um there's a
  416. 15:23question that the student
  417. 15:25asked here is the question so the UHS
  418. 15:29service only allows for three sessions
  419. 15:31free which isn't enough for a lot of
  420. 15:33people in a very short term is there any
  421. 15:36other uh I guess are there any other
  422. 15:39resources for counseling if we can't
  423. 15:41afford um otherwise so well I thought it
  424. 15:46was five sessions free unless they've
  425. 15:47changed it but um and those are
  426. 15:50available to all students whether or not
  427. 15:51they have uh the student health
  428. 15:53insurance plan and so it would depend on
  429. 15:56whether or not the student has that
  430. 15:57health insurance plan or not students
  431. 16:00who have the health insurance then it's
  432. 16:01a co-pay and I think it's $15 per
  433. 16:04appointment at that point um and there
  434. 16:07are many many um practitioners in the
  435. 16:12community who serve Berkeley students
  436. 16:14for that same copay as well so I know
  437. 16:17sometimes the UHS counselors It's can be
  438. 16:20hard to get into their schedules but
  439. 16:22there are many in the community as well
  440. 16:25if the student does not have the um
  441. 16:28student health insurance I think they
  442. 16:30have to have some kind of insurance so
  443. 16:32they might want to look into their own
  444. 16:33insurance and see but there are also
  445. 16:36clinics that do um sliding scales so and
  446. 16:40actually the Caps website has a list of
  447. 16:43those on there as well that um some you
  448. 16:46can go for for no money if if you're in
  449. 16:49low income brackets oh that's great
  450. 16:51that's actually really nice so that's
  451. 16:52available to our students and those
  452. 16:53those resources are on the um UHS
  453. 16:56counseling and Psychological Services
  454. 16:58website
  455. 17:00MH um so your slide was great can we
  456. 17:04have it to post it in the some I will
  457. 17:07send it to you yeah that's great
  458. 17:08resources wonderful I think it would be
  459. 17:10a useful one to to be actually put on on
  460. 17:13E's
  461. 17:15U sumary to for accessible to all the
  462. 17:18classes that's a good point that's a
  463. 17:20good point sure y definitely thank you
  464. 17:23that's a very very good one one slide
  465. 17:25summary uh everything you need to know
  466. 17:27about advising and the layers and the
  467. 17:30layers is important too um folks anybody
  468. 17:32else have any questions Sharon is such a
  469. 17:34resource anybody have anything else
  470. 17:36jumping into the Q&A or the chat very
  471. 17:38fast before we before we have to
  472. 17:40transition and I put my email in the
  473. 17:43slide I'm happy if um students do not
  474. 17:45have to be in the College of Engineering
  475. 17:46to contact me so if they're in LNS they
  476. 17:49can certainly contact me and I can get
  477. 17:51them connected this you know I actually
  478. 17:53learned something I didn't know that if
  479. 17:54you were taking an eek course which this
  480. 17:56course certainly is you get access to
  481. 17:58the resources that are connected to that
  482. 18:00so that's a great I I thought well no
  483. 18:02wherever your college is you know sorry
  484. 18:05you're not in the you know have that
  485. 18:06special handshake for eeks I didn't know
  486. 18:08that that that's great including the
  487. 18:10center for access to engineering
  488. 18:11Excellence which offers free tutoring
  489. 18:13for anybody in our courses and even in
  490. 18:16math courses or physics courses you do
  491. 18:18not have to be in the College of
  492. 18:19Engineering to get that outstanding
  493. 18:20outstanding I don't know how the
  494. 18:21tutoring is working I'm usually you drop
  495. 18:23in the tutoring center I don't know how
  496. 18:24the tutoring Works online maybe that's a
  497. 18:25little harder to do it is it's still
  498. 18:28drop in but yeah it is more challenging
  499. 18:30for sure it's still Dro in on campus you
  500. 18:32mean so they only no it's it's Dro in
  501. 18:34online oh Dro in Virtual I see oh yeah
  502. 18:36so they actually meet with a someone
  503. 18:38first the zoom room wow wow wow look at
  504. 18:40that yeah yeah yeah and you meet with
  505. 18:42somebody first and connected and
  506. 18:43understand the system and how it works
  507. 18:45and then you actually engage it then
  508. 18:46they put you in the room yeah oh
  509. 18:48beautiful that's good like the triag
  510. 18:50kind of thing that's good yes nice nice
  511. 18:51nice well I don't see any questions
  512. 18:53popping up thank you so much 50 so much
  513. 18:56thank you for giving us time oh my
  514. 18:59goodness no this is a great great well
  515. 19:01worth the time thank you again for thank
  516. 19:02you goodbye bye everyone thanks for all
  517. 19:04you do folks wonderful all right thank
  518. 19:06you all right we're back all right let
  519. 19:09me spot all right we have uh we have uh
  520. 19:13our we have our guest we have our guest
  521. 19:15wonderful have a lot of guests this is a
  522. 19:17good day this is a good day ksta good to
  523. 19:19see you let me switch slides here so you
  524. 19:21can see
  525. 19:22it do you want to do the
  526. 19:25introduction well I I can say a few
  527. 19:27words you know three fulltime jobs at
  528. 19:30the moment each one of them is listed at
  529. 19:32you know less than 50% of a time I guess
  530. 19:36so he's a Prof professor at UC Berkeley
  531. 19:39um he uh very um we we mentioned him a
  532. 19:44few times we mentioned the class 152 so
  533. 19:47it's a good time to ask him about 152 uh
  534. 19:50now uh I know a lot of students are
  535. 19:52interested and there is an interesting
  536. 19:53situation that we are facing that you
  537. 19:55know I think both the class and the
  538. 19:57weight list are full um so I think
  539. 19:59something will need to happen over there
  540. 20:01wow that's great good to see the
  541. 20:03interest in 152 wonderful yeah yeah
  542. 20:06exactly yeah so um I think kir will have
  543. 20:08stuff to deal with um over the next few
  544. 20:12weeks or months uh but I think we need
  545. 20:15to unglue that one or get it unstuck so
  546. 20:19people can get at least on the waight
  547. 20:21list that he um uh is also uh he is one
  548. 20:26of the co-founders of s five but I think
  549. 20:29he spends a lot of time um in the risk
  550. 20:33five Foundation where he's the chairman
  551. 20:35of the board and perhaps he can he can
  552. 20:37tell us a few first tell us a few words
  553. 20:39how he got here maybe you know you we
  554. 20:42usually ask our guests how did you get
  555. 20:45here how did you become a professor were
  556. 20:47you just born and and said okay I'm
  557. 20:49gonna be a professor in
  558. 20:50[Laughter]
  559. 20:52barley uh no it's a short answer so uh
  560. 20:56uh it all started a very very long time
  561. 20:58ago ago um I think uh when I was a kid
  562. 21:02growing up um I grew up in England for
  563. 21:05one thing so I'm I was born even though
  564. 21:07I'm Serbian ancestry I was actually born
  565. 21:10in England and grew up in England um and
  566. 21:13uh grown up in a very small town in
  567. 21:15middle of England and the school there I
  568. 21:17was interested in technology and things
  569. 21:20and um but this was very early days so
  570. 21:23um like for example I think my school
  571. 21:25got one computer for the whole school
  572. 21:27was an 8 bit micro for the entire school
  573. 21:29was a Commodore pet and I was about the
  574. 21:31only person who had any idea what it was
  575. 21:33supposed to do and at the same time I
  576. 21:35actually bugged my parents into buying
  577. 21:36me one of the very early 8bit computers
  578. 21:39I thing called an acorn atom which was
  579. 21:41from the acorn company in England um and
  580. 21:45um I was just fascinated by computers
  581. 21:47and this was a great machine for me
  582. 21:48because they gave you the schematics the
  583. 21:50whole electronic wiring diagram with the
  584. 21:53whole computer and they also gave you an
  585. 21:55the computer had an assembler so you
  586. 21:56learn a program an assembler so
  587. 21:58basically age you know I was right age
  588. 22:0014 15 I was teaching myself assembly
  589. 22:02code and basic programming and the
  590. 22:03reason I was into this was I like video
  591. 22:06games so back then um it was one of
  592. 22:09these things where there was a a
  593. 22:11traveling fair that would come to town
  594. 22:13once a year in the summer this Fair
  595. 22:15would come to town and this one summer
  596. 22:17in I think it was 1979 they came and
  597. 22:20they had an arcade of the very first
  598. 22:21video games right this are like Space
  599. 22:23Invaders galaxians and I thought wow
  600. 22:26what is this you got to imagine like now
  601. 22:28you you will play video games I'm sure
  602. 22:30our friends that do um but this was like
  603. 22:32you're like you know 14 15 years old and
  604. 22:34the first time you've ever seen a video
  605. 22:35game I'm like wow what is this thing you
  606. 22:38know and uh and you you emptied your
  607. 22:39whole school budget your whole College
  608. 22:41Budget on that probably right like all
  609. 22:43of us
  610. 22:44did yeah so I'm still paying back you
  611. 22:46know 10 P pieces you know my poor mother
  612. 22:50I you know she probably lost all these
  613. 22:5110 P pieces when I went to play these
  614. 22:53games right um and you know I was just
  615. 22:56fascinated this is just amazing how do
  616. 22:57they do this
  617. 22:59um and there was a the other unfortunate
  618. 23:01thing was you know this this F came and
  619. 23:03went but then an arcade opened up
  620. 23:05literally about three minutes walk from
  621. 23:07my house and this arcade all these video
  622. 23:09games in and I could just walk in there
  623. 23:10and out and I would spend many too many
  624. 23:13like late afternoons evenings after
  625. 23:14school in this place and too many 10
  626. 23:16pence pieces but I got to know the
  627. 23:17owners of the arcade I was there so much
  628. 23:19and then I started like getting them to
  629. 23:21open the machines I was looking in the
  630. 23:22back of these machines like how wow wow
  631. 23:25open them up and I'd see all these
  632. 23:27circuit boards and everything wow I'd be
  633. 23:29like this is pretty interesting I
  634. 23:31started reading up about it and that
  635. 23:32that's kind of what got me into
  636. 23:34computers was figuring out how these
  637. 23:36video games work so I wanted to learn
  638. 23:37how to write video games so I got the
  639. 23:39little computer so I started programming
  640. 23:41and the thing was after I got into
  641. 23:42writing games um I really didn't play
  642. 23:45the games that much it was more fun
  643. 23:46riding them than playing them but I was
  644. 23:48also interested in the processes how you
  645. 23:50build the why did they pick this design
  646. 23:53for the why did the 6502 have the ax and
  647. 23:55Y registers why were there only these
  648. 23:57instructions not the these other
  649. 23:58instructions you know I was still
  650. 24:00getting my head around this you know as
  651. 24:02a um you know this is in the equivalent
  652. 24:05of high school I guess I I had this
  653. 24:06computer and I had one got to remember I
  654. 24:08had one computer and my school had one
  655. 24:10computer and that was it um and then uh
  656. 24:12during high school we had uh dial in
  657. 24:15access to a pdp1 in the next town so
  658. 24:17this town was eight miles away and there
  659. 24:20was a I think it was like a um 96k 9 k6
  660. 24:24board modem that connected our school to
  661. 24:27this computer eight miles away and all
  662. 24:29these terminals were hanging off this
  663. 24:31pdp11 I learned to program on the mini
  664. 24:33computer there um so this was also fun
  665. 24:36and I got me so I was very interested in
  666. 24:37computers at that age but then I went to
  667. 24:39college I went to Cambridge as an
  668. 24:42undergrad and um I did electrical
  669. 24:45engineering because computer science
  670. 24:47wasn't the serious subject here so the
  671. 24:50attitude then was oh computer science is
  672. 24:51just the thing you do off to the side
  673. 24:53but the serious stuff is engineering so
  674. 24:54I did an engineering degree uh
  675. 24:56specializing in electrical engineering
  676. 24:59um and at Cambridge at that time the the
  677. 25:01people who did computer science were
  678. 25:03considered the failures like if you
  679. 25:04couldn't do physics or chemistry or
  680. 25:06biology after the first year you would
  681. 25:08go off and do this the final two years
  682. 25:10would be a computer science degree
  683. 25:11that's funny so funny yeah and and also
  684. 25:15if you really failed you spend two years
  685. 25:17doing something else then really badly
  686. 25:18there was a one-year constellation
  687. 25:20degree in computer science you could get
  688. 25:22so it really was considered so I didn't
  689. 25:24do computer science at the time as a
  690. 25:25degree because it wasn't considered a
  691. 25:28serious subject yet you couldn't do an
  692. 25:30entire three year I didn't got degrees
  693. 25:31of three years you couldn't do a
  694. 25:33complete three-year degree just in
  695. 25:35computer science so I did electrical
  696. 25:37engineering um I think that was actually
  697. 25:38a good choice for me because I learned a
  698. 25:40lot about you know voltages currents the
  699. 25:42physical side of things which you know
  700. 25:44I'm interested in computer architecture
  701. 25:45it's very important to understand how to
  702. 25:47build real machines and also my thinking
  703. 25:49at the time was you know this Computing
  704. 25:51software side of things is kind of easy
  705. 25:53you know like it I've been doing it for
  706. 25:54a long time whereas electrical stuff
  707. 25:57that was hard I I didn't know that so I
  708. 25:59wanted to learn it's is stuff I didn't
  709. 26:00know so I was excited to go learn about
  710. 26:03you know how to build circuits and you
  711. 26:05know do complex math and things that I
  712. 26:06needed for um that side of stuff so the
  713. 26:09other thing that happened to me was
  714. 26:10while I was going to University I was
  715. 26:12sponsored by a company called
  716. 26:14gec this was the British company gec not
  717. 26:17the US company GE and the British
  718. 26:20company gec um they had a sponsorship
  719. 26:23program and they had a research center
  720. 26:24in in London in Wembley um uh near the
  721. 26:28big football stadium is um so I used to
  722. 26:31have to go there in the Summers for
  723. 26:32internships and also part of the deal
  724. 26:35was I had to go work there after I
  725. 26:36graduated so I finished my
  726. 26:38undergrad then went to work with them
  727. 26:40and what I went to work on was a big
  728. 26:41fifth generation computer architecture
  729. 26:43project so they put me on a um big the
  730. 26:47spre European research project in
  731. 26:48computer architecture and that's really
  732. 26:50got me more interested in computer
  733. 26:51architecture so I started reading these
  734. 26:53papers from these guys in Berkeley and
  735. 26:55Stanford about risk and you know it was
  736. 26:57all like oh this is really cool stuff so
  737. 26:59during that you know after um undergrad
  738. 27:02basically working on a computer Arch
  739. 27:04research project working on a chip
  740. 27:06design that's when I got really into
  741. 27:08doing all this and at the time I thought
  742. 27:11well this is really cool I want to do
  743. 27:12more of this and when I left undergrad I
  744. 27:15was 100% certain I did not want to do a
  745. 27:17PhD I just want to go build stuff do
  746. 27:19real things and not because in England
  747. 27:21you have to realize the phds were
  748. 27:22considered more Ivory Tower and academic
  749. 27:25and I wanted to go build stuff I like
  750. 27:27making things right and and but after a
  751. 27:29couple years working at this um in this
  752. 27:31research project reading these papers
  753. 27:32from Berkeley and Stanford and other
  754. 27:34places I was like yeah this is exciting
  755. 27:36but I want to do a PhD in the states
  756. 27:38like it I didn't want to do it in the UK
  757. 27:39that didn't sound like fun so I applied
  758. 27:43to all these schools well a few schools
  759. 27:45I picked you know Stanford Berkeley MIT
  760. 27:47and Caltech with the four that I applied
  761. 27:49to um and you know Berkeley and staff
  762. 27:52with my top two choices because I'd read
  763. 27:54the the papers from Hennessee and
  764. 27:56patteron um so that's why I was excited
  765. 27:59to go there and I got into Berkeley it
  766. 28:00was it was I was very lucky that was my
  767. 28:02first choice and I got in with a uh I
  768. 28:04remember I got an offer that included
  769. 28:06being a GSI in my first semester of
  770. 28:08Berkeley so I came to grad school in
  771. 28:10Berkeley um arriving in Berkeley was my
  772. 28:13first time arriving in America so I came
  773. 28:15to Berkeley you know to go to school and
  774. 28:18I'm like where's the beach right
  775. 28:21so we do have a beach this is really far
  776. 28:24west like this is California I thought
  777. 28:27where's the beach like and I come to
  778. 28:28Berkeley and it's uh very pleasant but
  779. 28:30it's you know the other experience I had
  780. 28:33my first day on campus at Berkeley I
  781. 28:35walked up I was staying with a host
  782. 28:37family in Orinda so I took the the B to
  783. 28:39rockage and walked up uh Telegraph
  784. 28:43walked up Telegraph to come into Camp no
  785. 28:45I was U I worked up um College college
  786. 28:48to come into campus and I was walking up
  787. 28:50there all these guys with long hair or
  788. 28:5260s clothed and the whole street was
  789. 28:55light I'm thinking wow Berkeley really
  790. 28:56is in the 60s to grow my hair long now I
  791. 29:02have what's going on this is you know
  792. 29:05this is really in the 60s what I didn't
  793. 29:06realize was the grateful Dad were
  794. 29:08playing at the
  795. 29:10Greek my first day on campus this is
  796. 29:13what I I saw what's that
  797. 29:16smell that was my introduction to
  798. 29:18Berkeley my first a Greatful concert so
  799. 29:22I uh got to campus obvious had a great
  800. 29:24time uh learned a lot um I must say
  801. 29:27coming to America from the UK my first
  802. 29:30impression was Americans are crazy you
  803. 29:33know they just they work way too hard um
  804. 29:36and I was a TA for 60c which was the
  805. 29:39predecessor of
  806. 29:4061c appointment so I actually was a TA
  807. 29:43for this class with Paul hilfinger was
  808. 29:45the Wow
  809. 29:47Wow first semester um and I just
  810. 29:50remember how hard everybody worked in
  811. 29:52the I'm sure it's exactly the same now I
  812. 29:54know it's exactly the same now but I was
  813. 29:56thinking these undergrads are doing in
  814. 29:57one one semester what in Cambridge you
  815. 29:59would do over you know a year wow and
  816. 30:02you were taking three other classes too
  817. 30:04how crazy these Americans are and all my
  818. 30:06other foreign students I was hanging out
  819. 30:07with they're like the same these
  820. 30:08Americans are
  821. 30:10nuts but after after a few months we
  822. 30:14were all nuts too and working just as
  823. 30:15hard right so sure we got into it um
  824. 30:19that was exciting or what other thing
  825. 30:20happened that first semester I was see
  826. 30:22was when the big earthquake hit Creator
  827. 30:24hit during a 6C class oh my goodness
  828. 30:28there was a I had to transcribe the
  829. 30:29notes and the video included the the
  830. 30:31earthquake right in the middle of the
  831. 30:33look at that 1990 yeah 1989 89 89 right
  832. 30:38that's right 9 so you know I did my PhD
  833. 30:41and uh you know I worked on actually
  834. 30:43building accelerators for neuron Network
  835. 30:46training which is kind of funny because
  836. 30:47it's what people are into right now back
  837. 30:49then this was a new thing with Nelson
  838. 30:51Morgan at ixie yes indeed I know Nelson
  839. 30:53well yeah yeah so we did speech
  840. 30:55recognition I built machines to help
  841. 30:58people run speech recognition faster um
  842. 31:00so that was the last W of neuronet um I
  843. 31:03built a vector process and this is part
  844. 31:05of the experience that led to RIS five
  845. 31:07um so we did we built a few chips we had
  846. 31:10a team there and we went we did several
  847. 31:12different chip designs um and they they
  848. 31:14kind of work we slowly built up our
  849. 31:16expertise in building chips and we buil
  850. 31:18some processes and then um I decided
  851. 31:21that the way we' been pull the process
  852. 31:22is kind of kind of chunky we should use
  853. 31:24a standard instruction set and get all
  854. 31:25the software to make everything work and
  855. 31:27so okay we build a myips processor and
  856. 31:29extend it with a vector unit which is
  857. 31:31what we did but we went to talk to myips
  858. 31:33the company and said we'd like to build
  859. 31:36a myip core and they said sure go ahead
  860. 31:38we'll give you a license okay great they
  861. 31:40said $2
  862. 31:42million back in
  863. 31:44992 and that was real dollar so we're
  864. 31:47like oh no we don't we can't do that
  865. 31:49yeah not so much not so much so um we uh
  866. 31:52uh I just came back to bery and said
  867. 31:54I'll just build my own m scol i don't
  868. 31:55need I know all we' have gotten for that
  869. 31:57too million dollars would be their
  870. 31:58blessing in some test vectors right
  871. 32:00there was no softcore industry or
  872. 32:02anything at that time verog was still a
  873. 32:03new thing um people just learning how to
  874. 32:07synthesize from fog remember working
  875. 32:09with the the the Berkeley CAD
  876. 32:11researchers um Ellen covich and she's
  877. 32:13working on CY synthesis tool and I was
  878. 32:15using early versions of that to do the
  879. 32:17synthesis for this chip um so it's very
  880. 32:19early days so anyway we just ignored
  881. 32:21nips and I just built my own myips core
  882. 32:22from scratch but that was one of the
  883. 32:24formative things for risk 5 is like why
  884. 32:26do we pay these guys so much money
  885. 32:28basically a list of op codes um didn't
  886. 32:30make any sense at all right um so we
  887. 32:33built this yeah we built this Vector
  888. 32:35thing it was big success I actually
  889. 32:37shipped it to nine sites around the
  890. 32:38world and people used it for training
  891. 32:41training wow um you know so then uh that
  892. 32:45was my PhD then uh it was like what to
  893. 32:47do next um I decided you know one of
  894. 32:51those things going all way through grad
  895. 32:52school I didn't know whe I want to be a
  896. 32:54professor or go work in industry or be a
  897. 32:56professor go work in industry and I must
  898. 32:57have gone back and forth about 10 times
  899. 33:00um there was one point we're going to do
  900. 33:02a startup with creative Labs um sound
  901. 33:04plaster guys because this Vector chip it
  902. 33:06turned out Dave wesle or Sandman had
  903. 33:08ported all this music synthesis software
  904. 33:10to it and so there was a thought but
  905. 33:12then I thought no I need to get my PhD I
  906. 33:13need to get well one thing I needed a
  907. 33:14green card I also wanted to actually get
  908. 33:17a PD so I finished then and then uh then
  909. 33:21went off to MIT uh so what happened was
  910. 33:22I didn't even apply to MIT they called
  911. 33:24me up because they come and interview I
  912. 33:26didn't really want to go MIT I didn't
  913. 33:28think so till I got there I thought oh
  914. 33:29this is a cool
  915. 33:31place went to my te faculty then uh uh
  916. 33:35then we got you back got me back yeah so
  917. 33:37the weather got me back basically I I
  918. 33:39loved MIT but Boston I couldn't stand
  919. 33:42the weather and yeah the west coast and
  920. 33:44also the industry here you have whole
  921. 33:45industry here right that pull me back
  922. 33:48so for for those who don't know by the
  923. 33:50way there are levels of impressiveness
  924. 33:53and there's like well I applied to MIT I
  925. 33:55had to fight my way and I got in you
  926. 33:57know there's a level above that which is
  927. 33:59they call you that's what happened
  928. 34:02to it's a whole another level here
  929. 34:05that's we got a few questions from
  930. 34:07students in here let's say here is one
  931. 34:10is this the same person who altered the
  932. 34:12risk five specification I don't know if
  933. 34:15I would have done my project without
  934. 34:16that laughing out loud so are you the
  935. 34:18same person yes with with help from by
  936. 34:21especially Andrew Waterman who he was my
  937. 34:23grad student he's not graduate he he
  938. 34:24also wrote a lot of the original spec as
  939. 34:26well
  940. 34:28that's we had him also he he he was in
  941. 34:31here so we have then aan says did you
  942. 34:34have to write programs in Assembly
  943. 34:36Language or were there any languages you
  944. 34:38could program in that was related to
  945. 34:40your Acorn computer oh no so you know
  946. 34:42back then basic was the thing every B
  947. 34:45yeah that's right computers at basic in
  948. 34:47ROM and the whole programming language
  949. 34:49fit in two kilobytes of ROM
  950. 34:52right you imagine you got to write a
  951. 34:54whole interpret that fits in 2 kilobytes
  952. 34:57um yeah yes we use basic in a yeah I
  953. 34:59mean I mean I I had Singler spectrum and
  954. 35:02I got very quickly frustrated with
  955. 35:04Basics i r a ton of assembly at that
  956. 35:07time and for good video game not much
  957. 35:10after that what's funny is there's a
  958. 35:13whole generation of us we're all about a
  959. 35:15couple years away from each other
  960. 35:16actually and I I started in basic in a
  961. 35:17TRS 80 so all of us had the same
  962. 35:20experience and also fell up with video
  963. 35:21games as well a third question um is 152
  964. 35:26more like the course an E6 series or
  965. 35:3061c person says I personally greatly
  966. 35:32prefer how topics such as circuits are
  967. 35:34approached in 61c over 16b are are are
  968. 35:38any of the more advanced mathematical
  969. 35:39topics from 16b needed as well this is
  970. 35:41for 152 so 152 is more like 61c and it
  971. 35:45actually more about architecture and
  972. 35:47software so there's very little on the
  973. 35:49sort of circuit or even logic design
  974. 35:51level if you want the logic design
  975. 35:52experience you should take 151 um but
  976. 35:55152 is more architecture and
  977. 35:56interactions with soft
  978. 35:58MH and there questions if I'm enjoying
  979. 36:00161c but didn't really enjoy 16b should
  980. 36:02I still take 152 and it sounds like
  981. 36:05yes like it
  982. 36:08more secret I don't enjoy 16b
  983. 36:12either side oh boy boy I should I should
  984. 36:17have paused the recording what are you
  985. 36:18doing here come
  986. 36:20on I can edit that out in
  987. 36:23post I'll edit in post it's okay I've
  988. 36:26been vocal about
  989. 36:29this it's still it's a course in
  990. 36:31development we're still working on it
  991. 36:32we're still working on it this is great
  992. 36:34this recommend 152 for students who
  993. 36:36planing for curan software oh you can
  994. 36:38the question you're working on lowlevel
  995. 36:39software like compilers or operating
  996. 36:41systems like deep heavy or performance
  997. 36:44high performance software definitely 1
  998. 36:4615 will help you understand how to make
  999. 36:48a machine run fast and do well
1000. 36:50understand all the features what
1001. 36:52industries do you see as a future for
  1002. 36:53RIS 5 everything eventually um it's all
1003. 36:57a matter of time scale so right now
  1004. 36:59embed in iot uh very good for R 5 I
1005. 37:03think you'll be surprised at how soon
1006. 37:05phones are going to switch to RIS 5 oh
1007. 37:08that's going a lot sooner than anybody
  1008. 37:10thinks interesting a lot of interest
1009. 37:12there servers will probably the last
1010. 37:14thing that switches over wow wow there's
1011. 37:16a lot lot of interest in Mobile right
1012. 37:18now so the recent one one thing that's
1013. 37:21happened is this recent acquisition of
1014. 37:22arm by Nvidia has really really
1015. 37:25accelerated interest in Risk 5 um so
1016. 37:28many of the companies who had been
  1017. 37:30developing project risk 5 a lot of the
1018. 37:32big ones had been now they're really
  1019. 37:33really they're planning to move
  1020. 37:35completely to RIS
1021. 37:37five where are some places oh didn't did
  1022. 37:40three help teach 16 I never T 16b yeah I
  1023. 37:43never T 6B neither neither me but we
  1024. 37:45probably need
  1025. 37:47to I'll let you go first B enjoy
1026. 37:51it there are some places where people
1027. 37:53are switching to risk life and so um a
1028. 37:57lot of the what we call minion cor a lot
1029. 37:59of these big chips when you build a big
1030. 38:01chip like U like your smartphone or um
  1031. 38:04even a laptop processor there's the big
1032. 38:07core that everybody knows about like the
1033. 38:08x86 or the arm but there's also like
1034. 38:10dozens of other little processors on
1035. 38:12those soc's and those those are places
1036. 38:14where people are switching those from
1037. 38:16what they are currently are over to r
1038. 38:17five another area where we seeing a lot
1039. 38:19of activities in storage controlers like
1040. 38:21SSD drives um so you know B like Western
  1041. 38:25Digital announc they're switching
1042. 38:26everything over to 5 you know they ship
1043. 38:29billions of devices um they need they're
1044. 38:31paying a lot of En royalties on those
1045. 38:32CES they're really Keen to move to risk
1046. 38:345 also they can customize it so this
1047. 38:36ssds have custom ECC error control and
1048. 38:39uh compression algorithms and they build
  1049. 38:41extensions that optimize those so that's
1050. 38:44another area um AI accelerator lot of
1051. 38:46startups building AI stuff using RIS 5
1052. 38:49um Network processes so a lot of things
1053. 38:51around servers people are moving to R5
1054. 38:53it's sort of all the all the little
1055. 38:54cores are currently moving but like I
1056. 38:56said mobile is over the next big area
  1057. 38:58you get a CS five show
  1058. 39:00up good stuff so I I I have a I have a
1059. 39:03question and then we'll let you go uh we
1060. 39:05have some other logistical things so the
1061. 39:07CI announced this um um PC like uh
1062. 39:12platform um that is risk Fire based I
  1063. 39:15think it would be
1064. 39:16spectacular um to move all of our 61c
1065. 39:21Lives to that then we we go from you
1066. 39:23know from the beginning till the end
1067. 39:26right staying this don't have to to
  1068. 39:29switch over to x86 x86 who how
1069. 39:34painful how painful is that going to be
1070. 39:37or how how ready is this
  1071. 39:38platform um I think it's it's very this
1072. 39:42year or next year um so one thing you're
1073. 39:45going to see many many many more death
  1074. 39:48boards come out next year there's a lot
1075. 39:50of silicon in Flight right now um so I
1076. 39:51think I'll be picking the right the
1077. 39:53right Dev board um but definitely yeah I
1078. 39:57think the the good thing is it's a very
1079. 39:59open environment so you don't have to
1080. 40:00worry about binary blobs and everything
1081. 40:02so students can see all the source code
1082. 40:03all the way down like from boot all the
  1083. 40:05way through I think that'll be a good
1084. 40:07part of the experience um and uh you
1085. 40:10know the your matchboard could be fine
1086. 40:12it has it runs um AMD gpus because they
1087. 40:15released open drivers you can see the
1088. 40:17source code so I think it would be good
1089. 40:19for the students because all the code is
1090. 40:20open all the interfaces are open so they
1091. 40:22can get in and actually see you know
1092. 40:23from the very you know from hitting
1093. 40:25reset everything that happens to bring
1094. 40:27the the machine up so I think that'll be
1095. 40:29very good for people to understand
1096. 40:30that's you know you that's one of the
1097. 40:32standard interview questions when you
1098. 40:33hit reset on a computer what happens so
1099. 40:36your goals as students that be to
1100. 40:37understand everything that happens from
1101. 40:38reset onwards and bring up a bring up a
1102. 40:41system yeah that's great there are two
1103. 40:43quick questions can we get quick on
1104. 40:45liners are there any parts of the RIS by
  1105. 40:47Isa
1106. 40:49um uh let me see that you want to do
1107. 40:52differently or disagree that you would
1108. 40:53want to do differently or disagree
1109. 40:55with yeah five years or 10 years of
  1110. 41:00already there's already annoying things
1111. 41:01that we put in there like we wish we did
  1112. 41:03differently but they're not they're not
1113. 41:05that bigger problem it's like them um we
1114. 41:08know the problems but they're not really
1115. 41:10a big they're not worth starting again
1116. 41:12the other thing you realize as soon as
1117. 41:13you build an Isa you kind of get stuck
1118. 41:15with Legacy and you have to just work
1119. 41:16with what you decided to do before and
1120. 41:18part of the craft of an architect is
  1121. 41:20actually working with Legacy that's what
1122. 41:22you have to do instruction sets live for
1123. 41:24like 50 years and so you have to you
  1124. 41:26know think as
1125. 41:27no matter how far ahead you think you
1126. 41:29always get something wrong once you
1127. 41:30consider some new constraint or some new
1128. 41:32thing that comes along so yeah there's
1129. 41:34lots of things I would change well a few
  1130. 41:35things I would change nothing major
1131. 41:37nothing that um you know makes me think
1132. 41:39we should start again no way um but yeah
  1133. 41:42um disagree with no i' I've agreed with
1134. 41:44everything so far um having been
1135. 41:46involved in designing most of it but um
  1136. 41:48uh there's definitely things we'd like
1137. 41:49to do differently if we could if we
  1138. 41:51could go again but we can't so we're
1139. 41:52just going to keep building if you
1140. 41:54switch the Linux PS and last question
1141. 41:57question if you switch the link PCS will
1142. 41:59we not need to simulate risk 5 in Venus
1143. 42:01and instead run it locally yeah if if
  1144. 42:03it's running on a real risk 5 natively
1145. 42:05you don't need to simulate though the
1146. 42:06simulator gives you more observability
1147. 42:08you may want to simulate it so you can
1148. 42:10you know trace and debug and do things
1149. 42:12uh and see what's going on better than
  1150. 42:14running on the actual
1151. 42:16hardware and actually you know relative
  1152. 42:18to to what's happening tomorrow there's
1153. 42:20a call for open Hardware open software
1154. 42:22for voting machines so you can imagine
1155. 42:24some future where BAS on this you know
1156. 42:28open Aran architecture you can see all
  1157. 42:30the way down you here's a voting machine
1158. 42:31and if you want to tear it apart there's
1159. 42:33nothing that would be proprietary so you
1160. 42:34can imagine a future that might involve
  1161. 42:36that yeah there's actually government
1162. 42:38grants for that for is five there's
1163. 42:39people building voting machines around
1164. 42:41is five yeah that's wonderful thank you
1165. 42:43for doing that great stuff yeah thank
  1166. 42:46you so much let's give k a hand thank
  1167. 42:47you
1168. 42:49much great to see you thank you again
1169. 42:51for here it's funny how how close our
1170. 42:54connection was we both were you know
1171. 42:55Brad students here at Berkeley together
1172. 42:56it's that you were on the I it's on the
1173. 42:58fifth floor doing Graphics you were on
1174. 43:00the fourth floor probably with Randy and
1175. 43:01Dave and all that it's funny how we all
1176. 43:04together last week we had Tom bird in
1177. 43:06here and I think he took that class in
  1178. 43:1189 AMD senior fellow
1179. 43:14now all right good okay thanks again
1180. 43:17Chris thank you good to see you my
1181. 43:19friend all right very good all right so
1182. 43:22we're back here let's talk about some
1183. 43:23Computing in the news uh let's see
1184. 43:27remove gerer from the list there okay
1185. 43:30all right so go ahead SciFi go ahead do
1186. 43:33anything yeah do do we have energy to
1187. 43:36you know they unve unveil the Linux PC
1188. 43:38based on risk fire processors do we you
1189. 43:40know are we ready to shift the labs can
1190. 43:42we get can we get going oh and swich
1191. 43:46over to the ls I mean it turns out that
  1192. 43:47it took a grant I believe is either a
1193. 43:49grant or somebody had money to buy the
1194. 43:51to buy The Hive so we're going to need
1195. 43:53some equivalent thing and and he he he
1196. 43:55kept talking about a board so it may be
1197. 43:58that you know we have to have a a full
1198. 44:00fully debugged uh you know machine that
  1199. 44:04can
1200. 44:05drop this thing you plug in I mean by
1201. 44:07looking at what is in there you plug in
1202. 44:08the supply uh Network and and um and a
1203. 44:12keyboard then uh right and monitor goes
1204. 44:16right you can imagine a model where
1205. 44:19where we do um we could see how how you
1206. 44:21know what the horsepower of this thing
1207. 44:22is whether it can support all the users
1208. 44:24who are going to be using it but no no
1209. 44:26we need that we need we need probably a
1210. 44:28couple of hundred of these yeah I know
1211. 44:29that's this feels very Raspberry Pi like
1212. 44:31it feels like we could have a lot of
  1213. 44:32them it doesn't look that expensive a
1214. 44:34lot of them and then you know hook them
1215. 44:36up to a big Network and then just log
1216. 44:37into you know uh maybe put maybe
1217. 44:39actually put them in the machine room to
1218. 44:40be honest if not I hadist said that you
1219. 44:43could check remotely I love that idea
1220. 44:46but it might take a grant to make it
  1221. 44:47happen yeah yeah I mean that they're not
  1222. 44:50that terribly expensive I think I I saw
1223. 44:53I mean it's going to be quite a bit of
  1224. 44:54development 600 something bucks right 6
1225. 44:58yeah that's but you know you need
1226. 45:00supplies and monitors and stuff like
1227. 45:02that for hobbyist and Engineers yeah it
  1228. 45:03it's basically a much faster much more a
1229. 45:06much better produced Raspberry Pi
  1230. 45:07essentially right it's a it's a Bo it
1231. 45:09looks like this you get exactly that and
1232. 45:10You' have to then wire it together and
1233. 45:12put kind of for casing around it that
1234. 45:13kind of thing yeah all right I'm looking
1235. 45:15at four minutes left we got some things
  1236. 45:17to cover it's exciting that's some good
  1237. 45:18stuff that's some good stuff let's do a
1238. 45:20quickie schedule check in uh we're week
  1239. 45:2311 we're at lecture 29 Monday we're
1240. 45:26basically a new you want Bor introduce
1241. 45:28it mentioning this is a whole new reset
1242. 45:29F lectures again yeah so yeah we we
1243. 45:32every few weeks in this semester we kind
1244. 45:35of uh in this class we get a fresh start
1245. 45:37so we are now on Friday we start with a
1246. 45:41module that deals with the operating
1247. 45:43system support virtual memory and IO um
1248. 45:47so it's um you know it builds up on on a
1249. 45:51lot of stuff that we have talked about
1250. 45:53it covers some of these questions that
  1251. 45:56uh um
1252. 45:58K mentioned what happens to a computer
1253. 46:01when you press the power switch and it
1254. 46:04starts booting and you realize you don't
  1255. 46:06have a keyboard uh
1256. 46:10connected and so on right so we we you
1257. 46:14know we we cover uh some of that uh this
1258. 46:18part of material is you you
1259. 46:21actually don't need too much of it for
1260. 46:25the project for um it does help
1261. 46:28understanding generally how things work
1262. 46:31but it is um you know we have a um a
  1263. 46:35homework that is
1264. 46:38um that does cover that material and
1265. 46:42there are Labs that are helpful as again
1266. 46:44as we said from last week the labs are
1267. 46:49optional um and we cover it um
1268. 46:54um yeah so so that is essentially what
1269. 46:58we have with us and then we are going
1270. 46:59into parallelism next week so things are
1271. 47:01moving fairly fast parallelism is
  1272. 47:03covered by project 4 right perfect
1273. 47:06perfect um there was a question are two
1274. 47:09homeworks do next Monday I thought we
1275. 47:10collapsed two homework into one um to
1276. 47:13say they both do at the same time we
1277. 47:15move we moved two of them right but it
1278. 47:17looks the schle we postponed it from
1279. 47:19yeah the schedule may not have revealed
  1280. 47:21it because it says 8 is due 119 and 9 is
  1281. 47:23due 1116 I think we actually ended up
  1282. 47:26moving 8 to 9 due date isn't that right
  1283. 47:29we didn't update the website I thought
1284. 47:30that's what he had done so make sure to
1285. 47:32fix the website on that one yeah I think
1286. 47:33that there are two that I would do next
1287. 47:35week because we moved one that was due
1288. 47:38uh we want we didn't want to have
1289. 47:40anything also due this week either so
  1290. 47:42that's another concern we've been
  1291. 47:43bringing that this who knows what's
1292. 47:45going to happen tomorrow we we've talked
1293. 47:46about this in other classes trying to
1294. 47:48you know if there might be protests
1295. 47:49there might be chaos we hope that
1296. 47:51everything's peaceful um whatever ends
1297. 47:52up happening but uh we don't know so
1298. 47:55we're all trying to most people are not
1299. 47:56having classes anything due on Tuesday
1300. 47:59and giving you some time to vote if you
1301. 48:00need the time uh and trying to remove
  1302. 48:02the assignments this week so we're
1303. 48:03trying to push these out a little bit to
1304. 48:04give some some free free of that all
1305. 48:07right let's do some more this is the
1306. 48:08last slide one in a minute or two here
1307. 48:10left and I can also stay a little bit
1308. 48:11later B when people want to ask
1309. 48:12questions and answer them no problem
1310. 48:14okay so uh there was a we tried to get
1311. 48:17the midterm autog graders done but we're
  1312. 48:19actually backed up we're still working
1313. 48:20on the quest retake autog graders that's
1314. 48:23happened we basically have a small inner
1315. 48:24core team Who does these things and they
1316. 48:26work on that one because that's the
1317. 48:27quest retake so we're good in that one
1318. 48:30so the midterm Auto graders which are
  1319. 48:31the one that affects everybody they're
1320. 48:33still being worked on um we were
1321. 48:35planning on having a midterm retake this
1322. 48:37sun this weekend but we may delay this
1323. 48:39and part of that is normally what we do
1324. 48:40is we look at the grades of before and
1325. 48:43then we make some decisions about who
1326. 48:44needs to take it based on that it's not
  1327. 48:45just a blind thing it's about the
1328. 48:46factors of grades in as well um there
1329. 48:49there always were questions about do I
1330. 48:51need to take it for the whole exam and
1331. 48:52no you never need to take it for the
1332. 48:53whole exam only for the question for the
1333. 48:54sections you had technical problems on
1334. 48:56oh you know I had some trouble in
1335. 48:58section three the one I started with and
1336. 48:59then the camera fell but then I figured
1337. 49:01out how to plug it in and not and not
1338. 49:02have to fall and so then everything else
1339. 49:04was fine well then it's only question
1340. 49:05section three you might need to do it
1341. 49:07it's not a guarantee we might actually
1342. 49:08wave it um so we well that's the the
1343. 49:10plan so we may end up having to delay
1344. 49:12the retake this weekend so that we have
1345. 49:14all the grades in to know who would need
1346. 49:16to take it so it's not like if you had a
1347. 49:18if you had a we just want to we don't
1348. 49:19want to make people have to do more work
1349. 49:21than they had to and S will just take
  1350. 49:22the gr if depends we'll we'll have to
1351. 49:23read all the the quotes you know well
1352. 49:25the video went off for 3 seconds well
1353. 49:27probably 3 seconds is okay well it went
  1354. 49:29out for 5 minutes went out for 20
  1355. 49:30minutes like how long so there's there's
1356. 49:32a kind of a soft Edge on this and we
1357. 49:34have to make some calls there and I I've
1358. 49:35made that calls and and I forgot to
  1359. 49:37submit the video well then y exactly I I
1360. 49:40forgot well about that um project 4 does
1361. 49:43launch this week so that's the exciting
1362. 49:44one that that we need some of the
1363. 49:46material for this week to to launch and
1364. 49:48here's the there was a question that
1365. 49:49came up by the way I should mention um
1366. 49:52there is a group of students who are
1367. 49:54organizing um representatives to come
1368. 49:56with us in our staff meeting on
1369. 49:57Wednesdays please do respond to that
  1370. 49:59Patza post I didn't link it here but
1371. 50:01there's a Patza post where people were
1372. 50:02saying fill in this form and we'll have
1373. 50:04a meeting we'll kind of choose some
  1374. 50:05folks we'll have a rotating group of
1375. 50:06students who come visit us that'd be
1376. 50:07great to get feedback from everybody if
1377. 50:09you want to be one of those students
1378. 50:10please fill in that form and talk to
1379. 50:11those students and then get yourself on
1380. 50:13the list to to come meet with us one of
1381. 50:15the things that one of the questions
1382. 50:16came up during that important meeting we
1383. 50:18had last week and I want to thank the
1384. 50:19students for doing that was you've made
1385. 50:22some homework optional is it really
1386. 50:23optional and we certainly want to say it
1387. 50:25100% is optional what that means by
1388. 50:27making it optional is it's good for you
1389. 50:29it's like eating your broccoli you can
1390. 50:30survive on eating your broccoli that
1391. 50:31meal if you just want to eat something
  1392. 50:33that doesn't have any green vegetables
1393. 50:34in it that's okay you probably survive
1394. 50:35but it's better for you to give your
1395. 50:36broccoli that's what this is this is
1396. 50:38good for you but you will survive it
1397. 50:40which means on the exam the material
  1398. 50:43from I believe it homework 911 Bor if
1399. 50:45you want to correct me on that 91 are
1400. 50:48the ones that are optional yeah and so
1401. 50:49that means that material from the
1402. 50:51homework will not be an exam in a way I
1403. 50:54say whatever material on the exam around
1404. 50:57that material will be from lecture okay
1405. 50:59so if you don't do the homework at all
1406. 51:01you can get a perfect score on the exam
1407. 51:03does that makes I'll say it again if you
1408. 51:04don't do the homework you could still be
1409. 51:06able to answer the questions based on
1410. 51:08attending the lecture understanding it
  1411. 51:09from there and moving forward there'll
1412. 51:11be nothing from directly from the
1413. 51:12homework that you had only seen from the
1414. 51:14homework will be assessing there might
1415. 51:16be overlapping if it's on the homework
1416. 51:17and on the on the lecture well they we
1417. 51:19can test it because on the lecture but
  1418. 51:21nothing only from the homework that's
1419. 51:22not in the lecture we will test that
1420. 51:24that makes sense and and and ju just to
1421. 51:26make sure I mean went carefully through
1422. 51:27the material of the classes that depend
1423. 51:29on us on 61c y um and you know homework
1424. 51:33eight you know if you don't do it if you
1425. 51:35don't retain any of that material on
1426. 51:37virtual memory you're not going to have
1427. 51:39any good time in 152 or 16 you to take
1428. 51:42one I mean yeah yeah that's not going to
  1429. 51:45work right but homeworks 9 and 11 I
1430. 51:49think that those are reasonably cover
1431. 51:51from scratch and any anywhere else where
1432. 51:54they depend on us um
1433. 51:58and there was also so there there two
1434. 51:59questions um so the the labs truly
  1435. 52:03optional like homework what we're going
1436. 52:04to say is the labs are a place for you
1437. 52:07to learn the material deeper so the labs
1438. 52:09are things where your the labs are not
  1439. 52:13being checked off you're not being
1440. 52:15graded for them but the material that's
  1441. 52:17this is important we're distinguishing
1442. 52:19what we did with the labs with the
  1443. 52:20homework homework again you don't have
1444. 52:21to do it you can Ace the exam I would
1445. 52:24say not true for the labs I would say
1446. 52:26you need to go through the labs to learn
1447. 52:28them to do that what's different is you
1448. 52:30don't have to do the labs that week that
1449. 52:32was the difference and you don't ever
1450. 52:33have to show us at all if you went
1451. 52:34through the labs and eventually learned
1452. 52:36the material that's going to show up on
1453. 52:38the exam the labs are not optional it's
1454. 52:40a good question to ask the labs are not
1455. 52:42optional in terms of the material still
  1456. 52:44covered that material is a great
1457. 52:46exercise it's great practice and that is
1458. 52:48going to be then tested so it's not
1459. 52:49going to say well what do we do on the
1460. 52:50lab page 14 we won't do that but to
1461. 52:52learn the material in a deeper richer
1462. 52:54way that then would be there so it's not
1463. 52:56something you have to oh my gosh there's
1464. 52:5819 things do this week no relax it it's
1465. 53:01not something you have you never need to
1466. 53:02show us we just know but we encourage
1467. 53:04you to do it we encourage you to ask
1468. 53:06questions to your Tas and to your staff
1469. 53:07about it but we're never going to force
1470. 53:09you to do it by a deadline but that
1471. 53:11material is still on exams again never
  1472. 53:14directly from what's on line 14 but that
1473. 53:16material is how you go deeper into the
1474. 53:18material you maybe example caches
1475. 53:20there'll be some problems on caches
1476. 53:21you'll do in labs and it might be an
1477. 53:23exam question that's very similar or not
1478. 53:25at all similar but you are learning
1479. 53:26about caches there and caches are
1480. 53:28certainly on the exam so that's the idea
1481. 53:30so labs are truly optional in the sense
1482. 53:31of not having to show us anything but
1483. 53:33the material is covered unlike homeworks
  1484. 53:35where that material isn't covered the
1485. 53:37lecture will be fine that's all you need
  1486. 53:39for this there
1487. 53:41um and the we're not sure if we need to
1488. 53:43do a midterm retake should we expect an
  1489. 53:44email soon there's only emails I'm going
1490. 53:46to wait for this is why I think we might
1491. 53:48need to be delaying the midterm retake
1492. 53:50is we need to be looking at students
1493. 53:53grades and how they did and whether they
1494. 53:55need to do it again and I need to be
1495. 53:57reading I need to take the time to read
1496. 53:58all the you know all the little
  1497. 54:00something went wrong and I I read about
  1498. 54:01it I make a I make a judgment call I did
1499. 54:03that for every single person who wrote
1500. 54:04something in the in the field and to do
1501. 54:06this again for again a thousand people
  1502. 54:07so that's a lot of reading a lot of
1503. 54:09stuff and it might need and what happen
1504. 54:11for the queston it took so long was we
1505. 54:12had to get all the grades in then I had
1506. 54:14to read everybody then cross correlate
1507. 54:15them to decide who's doing it and then
1508. 54:17once I give the list I give you one more
1509. 54:18chance to say well I'm not on the list
  1510. 54:20or I shouldn't be on I should either
1511. 54:21should be on the list or should not be
1512. 54:22on the list to find what the final list
1513. 54:24is all that took about four weeks so
  1514. 54:27we're hoping the midterm doesn't delay
1515. 54:29that much but it looks like that's where
1516. 54:30we're all leaning but we want to make a
1517. 54:31final call we'll let you know uh soon
  1518. 54:34about whether that's GNA happen that's
1519. 54:35the place okay sh thank you all what a
1520. 54:39good day I'm glad we had Sharon ker that
1521. 54:41was a great that was a great set of
