  1. 0:00What have they done outside of the
  2. 0:02things that are scheduled for them and
  3. 0:05told, "Oh, you have to be at this class
  4. 0:06at this time and here's what you do."
  5. 0:08What have you done on your own?
  6. 0:10Uh, try to express what we call EQ. So,
  7. 0:14it's about being empathetic is something
  8. 0:16I think companies are just starting to
  9. 0:18scratch the surface on how important
  10. 0:21that is. But, uh, here at Amazon, I
  11. 0:24actually get a daily reminder about EQ.
  12. 0:27And these are actionable things that we
  13. 0:28can do every single day. Thinking about
  14. 0:31how to interface with other human
  15. 0:33beings. We talked a little bit about Gen
  16. 0:35AI or AI in general and how machines can
  17. 0:37do certain things and they're getting
  18. 0:39better at certain things, but the
  19. 0:41empathy of a machine is purely a
  20. 0:44construct. Like there's still something
  21. 0:46about human empathy. I really look for
  22. 0:49that in a candidate because it's going
  23. 0:52to make it much smoother in their
  24. 0:54relationships with me or whoever their
  25. 0:56future manager is going to be with their
  26. 0:58their peers and their co-workers and
  27. 1:01with the customers.
  28. 1:02What makes your candidate at least stand
  29. 1:03out to me? going back to what we talked
  30. 1:05about before. If they obviously
  31. 1:08technical skill set is one thing,
  32. 1:10personability and EQ um that goes into
  33. 1:13that is
  34. 1:15if they show me like they're passionate,
  35. 1:16they really want this thing and I can
  36. 1:18tell that they're very passionate and
  37. 1:19driven to do this thing, that definitely
  38. 1:21stands out to me.
  39. 1:23If you're in a team for your coursework,
  40. 1:25let's say they have four of you guys and
  41. 1:27you're working on a project, then make
  42. 1:29sure you notate leadership things you
  43. 1:31did within that project and and things
  44. 1:33you learned within the project. So use
  45. 1:35the coursework and the professors around
  46. 1:39you um as as doing extra that then you
  47. 1:43can emphasize that later on. So um I
  48. 1:46understand if you don't have a job, but
  49. 1:48then work work extra within your field.
  50. 1:51Cor, I'm going to piggyback on what you
  51. 1:53were saying about you could be a
  52. 1:54McDonald's worker. Well, while I was at
  53. 1:57ASU, I was an assistant manager at Taco
  54. 1:59Bell for the entire time I was at ASU.
  55. 2:02That's actually how I was able to pay
  56. 2:04for much of my education. And when it
  57. 2:09comes time to put that on your resume,
  58. 2:12don't just say assistant manager Taco
  59. 2:14Bell. Break down what does that mean?
  60. 2:16What are the skills that you take away
  61. 2:18from that? And part of it is being
  62. 2:20intentional while you're in that
  63. 2:22position. And part of it is being
  64. 2:24thoughtful when you're putting it in
  65. 2:26writing. For example, I had to order for
  66. 2:28the food to make sure we had enough
  67. 2:30ingredients to actually make the tacos
  68. 2:32or else there was no food to be made. Uh
  69. 2:35I actually had to program the point of
  70. 2:37sales system. Almost every job will have
  71. 2:39something that applies much more
  72. 2:41broadly.
  73. 2:42If you want to ask a professional, ask
  74. 2:45them about themselves. Everybody likes
  75. 2:47talking about themselves. Use your phone
  76. 2:49and make a quick note, you know, make a
  77. 2:52quick note. You might not need it ever,
  78. 2:54but make a quick note about that that
  79. 2:56interaction you had. And um just just so
  80. 2:59you can have it to refer to later. And
  81. 3:01as you mentioned, mistakes. I didn't do
  82. 3:04that. Maybe you needed that person
  83. 3:06again, but I didn't keep track of where
  84. 3:08it was. Or you found out that they
  85. 3:10worked for the company you wanted to
  86. 3:11work for and you're like, "Dang, I
  87. 3:13didn't. Oh, shoot." and and and or I
  88. 3:16didn't approach him. I had that
  89. 3:17opportunity and I didn't take it. Um so,
  90. 3:20but but sometimes it's just just a quick
  91. 3:22question and then make a quick note and
  92. 3:24you can refer to it later. And you don't
  93. 3:26have to always be on because that that's
  94. 3:29going to drive you crazy anyway. And and
  95. 3:31like you mentioned, we typically are
  96. 3:34more introverted anyway. So being that
  97. 3:36extroverted on person is is is very
  98. 3:39uncomfortable. So you don't want to be
  99. 3:41that way either. It's going to cause you
  100. 3:42too much stress. So, don't don't go
  101. 3:46crazy and worry worry worry about
  102. 3:48networking because we all just mentioned
  103. 3:49it a million times, you know, and if if
  104. 3:52if it's an opportunity, great. If it
  105. 3:54passes you by, don't sweat about it at
  106. 3:56all. Just, you know, you're going to
  107. 3:58have another opportunity. Just keep your
  108. 4:00eyes open um and talk to people. But
  109. 4:03yeah, don't make yourself crazy. Uh
  110. 4:06that's absolutely the kind of little tip
  111. 4:08that if you start doing it, you can
  112. 4:10quickly realize just how many people
  113. 4:12you're you're bumping into and you won't
  114. 4:15know that until you go back and take a
  115. 4:17look. So I'd also encourage folks to
  116. 4:19kind of go back and take a look from
  117. 4:21time to time and and do something. If
  118. 4:23you have that list, be thoughtful about
  119. 4:25what could I potentially do? What
  120. 4:28opportunities might be there right there
  121. 4:30in my digital device if uh only you take
  122. 4:32the time to to go and think about that?
  123. 4:35And it doesn't have to be disingenuous.
  124. 4:36Just kind of be yourself. Get to know
  125. 4:38people. It does take being intentional,
  126. 4:41but uh it doesn't have to be this kind
  127. 4:43of fake thing where you're putting on an
  128. 4:45act. In fact, that won't last for long.
  129. 4:47So, be yourself. Be inquisitive. I love
  130. 4:50Corey what you're saying about people
  131. 4:51love to talk about themselves. It's
  132. 4:53absolutely true.
  133. 4:54Don't forget low low tech situations in
  134. 4:57areas and this is more global, but you
  135. 5:01have a fantastic project at ASU called
  136. 5:04Solar Spell and it's been going on for a
  137. 5:07number of years and it's and definitely
  138. 5:09look that up. But that's using a very
  139. 5:11low tech solution to pro provide
  140. 5:14education all around the world. And they
  141. 5:17have build days where you can help build
  142. 5:19the solar spell um the solar spells um
  143. 5:23for them. But it's it's just one prime
  144. 5:26opportunity of uh looking at areas where
  145. 5:29low tech is being used to solve problems
  146. 5:31worldwide because not everybody has the
  147. 5:34internet and not everybody has the fancy
  148. 5:36stuff we have. So, um, look look all
  149. 5:39around you. There's opportunities
  150. 5:42everywhere.
